ATLA and Marvel have the same misogyny

So... I've finally made it to episode 8 of Netflix's Live Action ATLA.

This may be shocking for some of you, because I wrote a post about how Netflix ATLA is misogynistic a month ago, but now I'm back again.

I specifically want to talk about the absolutely ridiculous and bullshit feminist virtue signaling that we are habitually forced to endure.

The scene I am specifcally referring to is the scene in which Katara demands that Master Pakku let's her fight. Then all of a sudden, the camera pans to all of the healers in the Northern Water Tribe (the female water benders) who stand ready to fight.

Yet, despite their immense power, they are begging this old as man for permission, instead of just doing what needs to be done.

This scene is giving... stupid. It's giving the 999th Marvel movie that NOBODY freaking wanted... okay! Does anybody remember that scene from Avenger's End Game (of course you do), in which all of the female avengers assemble, and it's one female cameo after another? I have no idea who liked this scene, but I didn't. I HATED this scene! I thought it was tacky and cringe, and I didn't understand why I felt that way.

Then in the Marvels, there's this scene in which Captain Danvers gets knocked down, and then there's this sequence starting from when she was a little girl playing softball in which she gets knocked down and gets back up.

The whole thing is soooo cringe.

It's cringe because it's heavy handed. It feels like one of those inspirational quotes you put on your wall that says something stupid like "She believed she could so she did..." or "Shero" or "Herstory".

It feels like a moment in which the male writers were like, we got to make women feel seen, so let's stop the flow of the entire movie and series and whatever is going on and have this really stupid overproduced moment in which the women look like bad asses, before we hide the women back in the background and let the real heroes (the men) take over.

All of this despite the fact that in hindsight, of all of the avengers assembled there to fight Thanos that day (both male and female, alike), Scarlett Witch and Captain Marvel were the only one's canonically strong enough to stop Thanos. Yet, we can't have that, because a man needs to be the hero.

Like stop stealing women's W's. It happens all the time in shows like Naruto, in which the most powerful kunoichi will get caught up by the most stupid insignificant thing, so that a man can end up saving her and she becomes the damsel in distress.

The narrative of women can be strong but never as strong as men because men need to be the hero is weak and tired, tell a new story!!!

Especially, because it really isn't all that true anymore. After the industrial revolution and the boom of tech, women and men's physically strengths have become increasingly more similar for decades. Why, because very few people need to carry giant logs and chop down trees to survive anymore! You don't need to be swol to complete a spreadsheet.

I digress.

My point is what these scenes from ATLA and Marvel have in common. It's the reason why they are both cringe.

Men don't see women as women who are unique human beings with our own unique desires. Therefore, male writers force powerful female characters to embody male characteristics that appeal to men.

You know all that flexing and all the abs and the sweat and the thirst trap scenes of half naked men like Thor and Captain America (even the scene with Sokka in it). Do you think those scenes are for women? Well, they are not. They are for men. Men get hard-ons for these kinds of scenes, and these scenes are specifically created for men and the male gaze.

Then they try to extend this to female characters, to show that they are feminists. However, this completely ignores the female gaze and female motivation.

The scenes really are women quietly asking for permission (not really) and then men loudly given women permissions to stand out and be powerful, but only in a way that satisfies the male gaze. Which considering the fact that men are socially conditioned to like feminine or overly sexual women, I have no idea who these scenes appeal to!!!

Like bro... read a freaking book. Learn about history!!! Real history!!! Women do not need the permission of men to be powerful, intelligent, strong, tactful or ambitious. Women have already been all of these things since the dawn of time.

Therefore, women don't need weird cameos that break up the pacing of the story or scenes of little girls playing sports, getting knocked down, and getting back up to feel seen. Women and girls do not need to be convinced that we are powerful. We already know it. We've been working in the background for centuries while men have taken credit for our labors, efforts, and endeavors.

All we need is for men to get the hell out of our way! We can see it right now with education and employment. Ever since women were allowed to attend school, women have outperformed men in education is almost every subject (and men and women are at par with each other in Math and Science). Women are also out enrolling men in college 2:1.

So instead of giving women 5 minutes of permission to be powerful in movies and shows and embuing them with masculine characterists, write a compelling female character from the beginning of the show. Develop her character as a person, who has to deal with the unique intersectionality of being a woman. Don't make her whole personality being a woman.

And if you cannot, write a compelling female character, then get a woman to do it!

I ended up keeping a couple designs from the flower sheep set and it should come to nobody's surprise that I'm making them ship kids.

Currently have no set names, so I'm just calling them Tulip and Sakura, the flowers they were based on, for now

Much like Dés and Cammy, Luanne and Vanus are twins, with Vanus being the older and Luanne the younger.

Venus is pretty close in similarity to Star--loud personality, a bit vain, hair trigger temper, the works. She can often come off as a bit of an entitled brat because Star finds her strength of will amusing, and lets her get away with a lot of stuff.

Also like her mother, she's stronger than she looks and adept at combat, preferring the axe. From an early age, she's out cutting down heretics, and it would not be too uncommon a sight for her to splash about in the puddles of blood she made.

Luanne, meanwhile, is much more subdued, and genuinely more of a fraidy-cat. She works herself up thinking of horrible creatures and scenarios that await the unprepared, and goes running to the safety of her parents if so much as a spider crosses her path.

However, she has powerful magic that allows her to manipulate blood, sssssort of like waterbending in that she can make it solidify to form spears, coat the surrounding terrain with it, etc. Her colors change the more blood she's channeling, and the more her power is concentrated.

However... She doesn't like using it so much. Ah well.

Oooooh thank you for asking!!! The ATLA xover is an idea I love, but also very intimidated by haha. And another one of my rare stories taking place outside of the ninja/canonverse. In fact, it happens in ATLA/LOK, but follows Legend of Korra in the timeline. Poor Avatar Korra- I kill her off young for the sake of vibes, since I wanted to make story's technological era sorta like Post-WW2 steampunk mood. Without revealing to much (be I remain an absolute sucker for mystery and plot twists), the story takes place in Republic City, where Kakashi is an Airbender detective with the police, with waterbender Sakura as his rookie partner, and his firebender ward Sasuke who he was unexpectedly saddled with following the murder of Sasuke's Fire Nation family by some stupid last will and testament shenanigans. I don't anything more than worldbuilding written down for this one, unfortunately, so I'll just say that fic begins when Kakashi and Sakura arrest a strange, feral earthbender teen and his nine tailed fox spirit BFF stirring up trouble in the areas of the city bordering the Spirit World Portal. Sakura is shocked to realize the culprit is Naruto, the kid she knew from her time at the Republic City Orphanage. But Naruto disappeared and was presumed dead ten years ago. Mystery/Case Fic shenanigans ensue, as Kakashi tries to figure out who tf this kid is, where he's been for the last decade, and what he could possible have to do with the missing Avatar (I'm sure the answer will not be that surprising). My Anti OTP answer is under the cut, since this was getting kinda long haha sorry!!

The Anti-OTP series is a much simpler idea imo haha. Basically, the challenge was for me to write one smut-shot each month of 2023 featuring a pairing that was not my OTP (SNS). Basically, Hokage Naruto gets divorced and begins to sow his repressed queer wild outs- affectionately referred to as my Slutkage-verse. Currently, I have stalled on this series as I focused on other projects- only my Kakashi/Naruto, Sai/Naruto, and Juugo/Naruto installments have been posted, but I have a lot of other wild and not-so-wild pairing and kinks/tropes lined up, including but not limited to Darui/Naruto marriage proposals, Kiba/Naruto + Sai cuckholding, Gaara/Naruto oiroke no jutsu fuckery, one surprise crossover pairing with another anime, and of course, a twist at the end bc I'm predictable.

I chose nations based on the techniques: Sakura can easily crush the ground, Naruto's rasengan is air, Sasuke masters fire and lightning, and Kakashi can do them all, so to keep the balance - he's a (very hot) waterbender.

Hello, can i ask for a secnario or a headcannon for naruko (female version of naruto) x male water bender reader who can bloodbend, who was isekai'd to the narutoverse? And the reader show's naruko their bloodbending in a mission. oh and female sasuke x firebender male reader headcannon or scenario who can lightning bend, and show sasuki the reader lightning bending after sasuki say the reader is lying oh and the reader show sasuki that they can redirect lightning too.

As much as I wanted to write this with the entire Naruto-verse being gender-bent, I had to cave to the original names for everyone (except Naruki and Sasuki) for my sanity. Just bullet point story plus head canons until I can work on the novelization on AO3 (and similar fanfic sites) later. Not sure how often I'll be able to update that part of the project, but it will be written with the Naruto-verse gender-bent.

Naurki x Issekai Waterbender M!Reader

The way you meet is by falling nearby shortly after Team Kakashi is formed and given the mission to rescue Gaara.

However, everyone is highly suspicious of you from the get-go.

Even after you try explaining that you're a waterbender and a healer, they don't fully believe you and Tsunade keeps you with her until further notice.

You are 100% put through your paces as a healer and deemed by Tsunade to be rather advanced for your age.

Sakura just thinks of you as a talented version of Naruki (and is lowkey jealous of your skills) but given your slightly more chill side most accept you as part of the Village until you can either find a way home or decide something else

No one really believes you, they think you come from the Land of Steel, maybe a small village of only Water Jutsu users nearby.

Everyone is weirded out by the fact that you don't need to perform hand signs.

Yes, Kakashi has tried (several times) to copy your 'justu' but to no avail... and no, you can't teach anyone how you're waterbending

Naruki is the first attempt to befriend you, given that the other option is Sai...

You are assigned to Team Kakashi despite this leading to a large team because Tsunade doesn't know whether you or Sai will remain on the final team due to your being a healer vs how Sai is with Sakura and Naruki.

But you manage to help smooth things over nicely... with one of the few aggressive things you'll ever say (don't judge someone you don't know personally)

When Yamato suggests leaving Sakura behind, you insist that you could stay and help heal her then catch up. But Yamato is equally stubborn (and demanding) about not leaving the only two healers behind making the argument that the moving party will need one healer.

The mission still goes according to plan, except for the retrieve Sasuki part...

When the team returns to the village, You go to comfort Naruki.

Instead of asking about Sasuki, you tell her about your life, your best friend, the weight of being somewhere so foreign to yourself, and the difficulty of the choices you'll have to make if there even is a way for you to get home.

This is when Naruki realizes her feelings toward you are stronger than friendship and this deepens fast with you helping Naruki with training.

However, it aggravates Kakashi to no end since he can't copy your waterbending (no, Kakashi never lets this go because he is certain you're using a jutsu... just figuring out how you're guarding it so well...)

Between the training and you constantly breaking up fights between Naruki and Sai, Naruki falls pretty fast

Naruki is the one who ends up asking you out (after a few months of training and a few failed attempts at spying on you)

Though, her idea of a date is going to get ramen... and she didn't expressly say it was a romantic date...

So you end up thinking of it as a friend thing, until you two go for a walk around the village and have a heart to heart and actually talk through what you're both feeling

It isn't an instant "we're dating" after that, but you and Naruki do talk much more often.

Sakura thinks she's meddling and playing matchmaker for Naruki... until Sakura says something directly to you

Sakura's jaw drops when you mention how you and Naruki are taking things slow instead of rushing head first into anything serious

The first time Kakashi pryed into extra abilities of yours, you mentioned being able to blood bend but never actually used it save for dire medical procedures

When time came to use it in combat, no one looked at you the same. To them, it was like watching a chill pet suddenly attack someone

Naruki was beyond worried about you using that on Sasuki and practically begged you not to

You managed to calm her down, promising to only use it as a method of capture and in a way that wouldn't hurt

It wasn't until you were extremely comfortable with your new life, happily dating Naruki, and trying to not let her get into the politics that you even met back up with your friend (the other insert below)

After making sure Sasuki was okay, you introduced yourself and tried to ask questions... Sasuki was cold and indifferent to the point that she didn't even bother answering or care that you're following them

It comes down to Karin and Suigetsu to explain anything... Karin wants you gone, Suigetsu doesn't care much but loves the drama your presence brings

Juugo is the most neutral to you, but also is the most comfortable around you since you act a lot like Sasuki

This gets under Sasuki's skin in a weird way (denial of feelings)

Takes slow burn romance to a whole new level as Sasuki is far more resistant to even talking to you for longer than it takes to bark an order or ask a simple question about abilities

She never believes you about the lightening bending, much less being able to redirect a natural lightening bolt

When you show her, she gets more pissed... treating you like a rival as you try to get closer

The first time you manage to make her smile is when Sasuki lets you talk 'at' her over things that aren't related to the missions and goals

While it takes a while to find Itachi, you manage to at least befriend Sasuki in this time... not that she will admit to it

After the fight, you swoop in to rescue Sasuki but you barely catch up to the strange masked person calling themselves Madara

Sasuki sorta listens to you when you voice your opinion about how off everything sounds

But eventually you just have to follow along to keep Sasuki safe (you fell first but Sasuki fell much harder)

You spend a lot of time late into the evening just talking with Sasuki about everything going on, trying to get her to confront her feelings over what she did

It takes you opening up about your life and your friend before she starts talking about her own past

During the trip to hunting Danzo, Sasuki started cozing up to you and won't deny it... very subtly just acting like a couple instead of solidifying the relationship

ok so this idea spawned because of seeing naruto atla aus with naruto as the avatar.  ok so: while personality wise naruto is closer to aang and sasuke is closer to zuko.  and while plot wise naruto/aang are the protags and sasuke/zuko are antags who later become redeemed.  and aang/naruto = wind and sasuke/zuko = fire. Narratively naruto and zuko are closer because their goal is to chase down/capture sasuke/aang.  Aang and sasuke are victims of genocide who want to bring down (defeat for aang murder for sasuke) the people/person who killed their loved ones.

atla au where the uchiha are the airbenders and konoha is the fire nation. the Senju are the royal family (tobirama is sozin). Sasuke is aang the avatar and is mastering all the elements to take down Konoha's royal family and war council to end their oppression.

Suigetsu is a waterbender he rescued from a Konoha prison.

Karin is a weak firebender; she knows the katas but mostly uses chi for other stuff. she helped run the prison.

Juugo is an earthbender with bad control who ran away so Konoha/fire nation wouldn't take him or hurt his family. Sasuke helps him by just not caring he's an earthbender, or helping him with control.

Sakura's also a waterbender but she's a healer from the north. they let her come on their revolution because they and the people they run into need a healer and suigetsu has negative talent for healing. also because of political reasons. (one southern waterbender, one northern.)

Naruto is the fire nation prince who grows up with dead parents and nobody talks to bcuz hello fire nation prince??? his grandfather, sarutobi (third Hokage) is so busy with war efforts he never has time for naruto. Naruto is determined to bring Sasuke, the avatar, to the Konoha and have Sasuke endorse/work for them.

Naruto is joined by Kakashi, who is uncle Iroh in that he gives cryptic, unhelpful advice. He is also joined by Iruka, who is uncle Iroh in that he cares deeply and acts paternally towards naruto. his crew is the rest of the rookie nine or whatevs they called the genin who graduated alongside naruto.

Danzo is obvs the head of the Dai Lee, and Root are the Joo Dee. I have no idea how it would end because naruto would never turn against Konoha. I guess they just shove all the terrible things that Konoha did in naruto's face until he agrees to do better? except that didn't work too well in canon...

In Avatar AU, what is Kakashi's original bending? Fire (since lightning in Avatar is fire technique)? Also Kakashi's companion looks like Gaang, with firebender Sasuke, airbender Naruto, earthbender Yamato, very strong and witty non-bender Gai, and Sai is water-bender (ink-bender)? I am sure to categorize Sakura as waterbender or earthbender, hmmm....

Kakashi as I've written him is an earth bender, because although his natural affinity in Naruto universe is Lightning, the first style he ever uses and the one he uses the most, is earth.

The hounds when summoned are often with earth techniques

his earth wall and later quartz wall jutsu's are both earth

he pops in and out of the ground which is an earth technique we see IWA shinobi do a lot of.

So i chose him as an earth bender but with an inate ability for lightning bending (he struggles more with fire bending, but lightning comes completely naturally to him)

as for his gang, i wanted it as characters of the same age with his students from naruto verse being part of the next line of the avatar. So Kakashi's gang is Gai (Earth bender cuz stubbornness and i wanted them to be childhood friends) Rin (water bender/healer), Obito (fire bender that one seemed obv) Asuma (wind bender since he's a wind style user) Kurenai (Non bender adept at tricks and illusions), Tenzo (I used water bending but his mokuton is both water and earth combined so both work) and Iruka (i put him as a fire bender because i belive although we don't really see him use jutsu's, his natural style is fire)

ATLA/LOK - I was into the fandom back when Aang had yet to master Waterbending, and I was still there when Asami and Korra walked into the Spirit World hand in hand. <3

M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

Hmm…Kankuro. I feel like he'd be a lot of fun, and he'd make sure you had a good time whether you were hanging out at home or out on the town.

N - Name three things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

Fandom: Naruto

(1) A little more kindness when it comes to things people don't like. I've seen some truly disgusting takes about ships, characters, the ways people draw/write fan content, etc. Just…come on guys, be kind, or else just keep scrolling/unfollow/block and move on. It's not that hard.

(2) On a more fun note: There are quite a few rarepairs I want to see more content of. Believe it or not, Rock Lee/Sakura is technically a rarepair - there's so little of it out there. Gaara/Fuu also comes to mind.

(Yes, I'm aware I can write it myself, and I have a few WIPs in my idea folder. But I don't want it to just be me, ya know?)

(3) Um…tries hard to think of a third More fics where the characters cook? Idk, I can't think of much else and cooking is fun as well as a way for characters to bond.

My headcanons for an A.T.L.A./’Naruto’ crossover:

Sakura is a waterbender from the Northern Water Tribe, living there with her nonbender fisherman father Hyakushō Kizashi; he met her nonbender rice merchant mother Haruno Mebuki during 1 of his trips to the northern parts of the Earth Kingdom. They became friends then some years later fell in love. But neither wanted to leave their homeland. When Mebuki fell pregnant, she sailed to the Northern Water Tribe to tell him since she decided to let Kizashi know about their child; they talked things over, then sailed together to her home village to live there for the duration of the pregnancy. After Mebuki gave birth to their daughter, Kizashi sailed back to the Northern Water Tribe as per his & Mebuki’s agreement; but he decided to give their daughter the surname Haruno after she was named Sakura by Mebuki.

Sakura grows up as an ordinary little girl of the Northern Water Tribe, but sometimes the other kids bully her due to the light pink hair & her slightly-larger-than-average forehead; she becomes a bit of a crybaby as a result and she also often suppresses her anger at the tiny bullies. She 1 day at 5 years old got saved from the other little kids’ verbal abuse by Princess Yue (Sakura didn’t at the time know that Yue was a princess, though). She became Sakura’s only friend, but they very rarely could see each other; nevertheless, Yue’s gentle yet firm encouragement gave Sakura some self-confidence (she still had self-esteem issues, though).

Sakura at 12 years old has already mastered all of the healer waterbending she learned ever since age 7 from Master Yugoda. Wanting to learn how to fight, she sails away on a canoe after secretly stocking up on supplies; she left a letter so that Kizashi & Yugoda would think Sakura is going to meet Mebuki for the first time (prior to that they had been exchanging letters every week for Sakura’s entire life)..

After finding and meeting Mebuki, Sakura spent a month living with her. She then walked away from the village with a bagful of supplies. Sakura left behind a letter for Mebuki and sent a letter to the Northern Water Tribe for Kizashi.

She wandered around, searching for a waterbending teacher; Soon Sakura met at the Northern Air Temple an orphaned airbender named Namikaze Naruto and his half-sibling Namikaze Sasuke. The duo joined her at travelling; Naruto felt that studying from scrolls wasn’t enough anymore so he hoped having some experience away from his people, who were innovative Earth Kingdom civilians that had settled at the empty Air Temple when Naruto was little. None of them knew of him being capable of actual airbending due to his Air Nomad descendant, badass nonbender fighter father Minato always reminding his sons of the importance of secrecy. Sasuke being a bender was kept secret too. He chose to leave with his brother due to hating having nothing to learn firebending from and coz he at 12 years old managed to make a spark of lightning, so he hoped to learn more about himself; his secondary goal was finding his mother who Minato had known very little about. Naruto’s mother had been a fisherwoman named Uzumaki Kushina from the Southern Water Tribe. Both ladies had been uninterested in motherhood, although Minato was unaware of the details why the 2 best friends felt that way.

After 14 days of the trio traveling together, they had an unpleasant run-in with Fire Nation soldiers; Naruto (after a reminder from his brother) used no bending during the ensuing battle and Sakura & Sasuke tried their best to fight but were too untrained to. Luckily, a silver-haired stranger who wore a black cloth-mask on the lower half of his face showed up; he defeated the soldiers without using any bending. The kids ran after him when he climbed up a tree and started hopping away.

Several hours of following their savior later, he dropped down and told them that following strangers was stupid. They acknowledged his point, then proceeded to ignore the advice by continuing to follow him.

A week later after some shenanigans, the trio met a calm earthbender named Yamato. He and his nonbender adopted son Sai (who was secretly the runaway son of an Earth Kingdom noble, but that was a long story) invited the trio to come eat dinner at their home. Coz Yamato took pity on the 3 kids who’d lost all their supplies to bandits. During dinner, the mysterious saviour walks in; he turns out to be Yamato’s husband Kakashi.

After a week of shenanigans, the group of 6 start travelling together. Kakashi teaches Sasuke the basics of swordsmanship, Yamato lets Sakura bounce waterbending theories off him (which helps her improve a bit) an’ Sai keeps abysmally trying to flirt with Naruto but his terrible social skills result in it backfiring all the time; this all goes on for a month as they trek towards Si Wong Desert in hopes of finding out whether there really is a secret Spirit Library. At some point Kakashi befriends a random pug, who keeps following him everywhere; he decides to name the dog Pakkun.

Sakura meets a scary earthbender lady called Master Tsunade half a year after leaving the Northern Water Tribe.
