We Are No Strangers to Human Suffering, but We’ve Seen Nothing Like the Siege of Gaza

We are no strangers to human suffering — to conflict, to natural disasters, to some of the world’s largest and gravest catastrophes. We were there when fighting erupted in Khartoum, Sudan. As bombs rained down on Ukraine. When earthquakes leveled southern Turkey and northern Syria. As the Horn of Africa faced its worst drought in years. The list goes on.

But as the leaders of some of the world’s largest global humanitarian organizations, we have seen nothing like the siege of Gaza. In the more than two months since the horrifying attack on Israel that killed more than 1,200 people and resulted in some 240 abductions, about 18,000 Gazans — including more than 7,500 children — have been killed, according to the Gazan health ministry. More children have been reported killed in this conflict than in all major global conflicts combined last year.

The atrocities committed by Hamas on Oct. 7 were unconscionable and depraved, and the taking and holding of hostages is abhorrent. The calls for their release are urgent and justified. But the right to self-defense does not and cannot require unleashing this humanitarian nightmare on millions of civilians. It is not a path to accountability, healing or peace. In no other war we can think of in this century have civilians been so trapped, without any avenue or option to escape to save themselves and their children.

Most of our organizations have been operating in Gaza for decades. But we can do nothing remotely adequate to address the level of suffering there without an immediate and complete cease-fire and an end to the siege. The aerial bombardments have rendered our jobs impossible. The withholding of water, fuel, food and other basic goods has created an enormous scale of need that aid alone cannot offset.

Global leaders — and especially the United States government — must understand that we cannot save lives under these conditions. A significant change in approach from the U.S. government is needed today to pull Gaza back from this abyss.

For a start, the Biden administration must stop its diplomatic interference at the United Nations, blocking calls for a cease-fire.

Since the pause in fighting ended, we are again witnessing an exceptionally high level of bombardment, and at increasing ferocity. The few areas left in Gaza that are untouched by bombardment are shrinking by the hour, forcing more and more civilians to seek safety that does not exist. Over 80 percent of 2.3 million Gazans are now displaced. The newest Israeli offensive is now forcing them to cluster on a tiny sliver of land.

The bombardment is not the only thing brutally cutting lives short. The siege of — and blockades surrounding — Gaza have led to a critical food scarcity, cutoffs of medical supplies and electricity, and a lack of clean water. There is barely any medical care to be found in the enclave and few medications. Surgeons are working by the light of their mobile phones, without anesthetics. They are using dishcloths as bandages. The risk of waves of waterborne and infectious disease will only grow in the increasingly overcrowded living conditions of the displaced.

One of our colleagues in Gaza recently described their struggle to feed an orphaned infant who had been rescued from the rubble of an airstrike. The baby had not eaten for days after her mother’s death. Colleagues could only scrounge up powdered milk — not formula, not breast milk, and not a nutritionally suitable infant food — to help stave off her starvation.

Before the war, hundreds of truckloads of aid were needed each day to support Gazans’ daily existence. Only a trickle of that required aid has made it into Gaza in the two months since the war began. But even if more were allowed in, our work in Gaza is dependent on ensuring our teams can move safely to set up warehouses, shelters, health clinics, schools, and water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure.

Today our staff members are not safe. They tell us they’re making the daily choice of staying with their families in one place so that they can die together or go out to seek water and food.

Among leaders in Washington, there is constant talk about preparing for the “day after.” But if this relentless bombardment and siege continue, there will be no “day after” for Gaza. It will be too late. Hundreds of thousands of lives hang in the balance today.

So far, American diplomacy in this war has not delivered on the goals President Biden has conveyed: protection of innocent civilians, adherence to humanitarian law, more aid delivery. To stop Gaza’s apocalyptic free fall, the Biden administration must take tangible measures, as it does in other conflicts, to up the ante with all parties to the conflict and bordering countries.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken once said of the war in Ukraine that the targeting of heat, water and electricity was a “brutalization of Ukraine’s people” and “barbaric.” The Biden administration should acknowledge that the same holds true in Gaza. While it has announced measures to deter violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, Mr. Blinken and his colleagues should apply similar pressure to stop violence against civilians in Gaza, too.

The harrowing events unfolding before us are shaping a global narrative that, if unchanged, will reveal a legacy of indifference in the face of unspeakable suffering, bias in the application of the laws of conflict and impunity for actors that violate international humanitarian law.

The U.S. government must act now — and fight for humanity.

The Second Flautist remains the stupidest but also funniest adaptation choice. Su Minshan, heretofore portrayed as a cringefail loser who needed Wangxian and Wen Ning to save his ass from the Waterborne Abyss, overrides Wei Wuxian’s demonic cultivation abilities TWICE. Not only does he seize control of Wen Ning, but he manipulates the resentment summoned by Wei Wuxian to attack people and turn them into puppets at Nightless City SO EFFECTIVELY that Wei Wuxian cannot regain control of them even on an individual basis with the Yin Tiger Tally helping him.

Su Minshan, true Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, is the most overpowered character in the entire series, and we must therefore conclude that he chooses to be Jin Guangyao’s devoted henchman rather than seizing any power for himself because he finds it personally fulfilling.

7. I need fic finder help 😭 I cannot for the life of me find this one fic or remember the name, but I remember it very clearly.

So the premise was that the Lan soloed the SSC after the Wen attacked Cloud Recesses, and LWJ was sect leader (and chief cultivator??) after. He demanded a person be given to him (as compensation?? To show the sects alliance to him?? I forgot the exact reason) and WWX saw it coming a mile away that it would be him chosen to be handed over. Everyone was terrified of LWJ and was certain WWX would be miserable, but LWJ knew it would be WWX they sent and because Wen Qing vouched for him LWJ treated WWX like he deserved instead of how the sects thought he'd be, and got the shock of their life when they ended up married.

The last chapter I read (and the last update I saw, it was a (nearly finished?) wip last I read) Wen Qing sent a notice that LXC, who'd been in a coma for the entire fic up to that point, was awake.

If anyone can find this fic, I'd be eternally greatful 😭

18. hi! I just remembered a fic I read a while ago but I can't find it now and I really wanted to read it again. So what I remember about it is that it's set in cql verse and wei wuxian was taken to the nightless city. He was planning on learning about wrh's demonic cultivation and so he kind of tries to make wen rouhan favor him while secretly learning demonic cultivation. Wrh fell for it and he kinda made wwx his consort and lwj thought wwx really betrayed them. please help me find it T~T

I can remember but I can't find... But I remember that I think WWX still had a golden core. He made Chenqing to let WRH think he was only playing music to help him concentrate on creating the Yin Tiger Seal but actually WWX was using it to use demonic cultivation to create weaknesses in the Seal that he could exploit later (and also to try to protect his golden core grin the resentment). Chenqing becomes semi-sentient and wants to help and protect him. In the end he shatters the Seal while shielding everyone else from the backlash and almost dies in the process, because he drops Chenqing and so she can't protect him.

[The Grandmaster of Accidental Time Travel]

Omg, thank you for the ask!!

Okay so. Basically, the AU starts from Jin Guangyao's stab being very fatal and Jiang Cheng dying and returning to when he was ten years old.

Most of his concentration is focused on a) stopping Wei Wuxian b) stopping Wei Wuxian c) stopping Wei Wuxian— you get the idea. Except we all have read the novel and know that Wei Wuxian is real bad at listening to Jiang Cheng. Or anyone really.

So shenanigans follow. Except due to certain things (Jiang Cheng's knowledge of future events, things getting shifted by a little bit, a shift in attitude and a certain case of fever etc etc), things keep getting shifted. Lan Qiren is called to Qinghe earlier, they discover the skeleton of Qingfeng-jun's teacher, fight the Waterborne Abyss muuuuch earlier and somehow also manage to prevent Wei Wuxian from getting sent back to Yunmeng. How? Well, Jiang Cheng kinda gets in the middle of the fight, because he is trying. A little. To avoid. Jin Zixuan fucking dying. And he may or may not have gotten a horrible reaction from the fight. The reaction also may or may not have been exaggerated due to certain reasons.

The engagement is still dissolved. by a letter. All hail the greatest father of all time, Jiang Fengmian.

Now, in the background what did happen is. Lan Wangji manages to develop an unfortunate one sided crush on Jiang Cheng. Lan Xichen thinks it's hilarious and pairs them up for a night hunt. It goes horribly, important things are revealed and Wei Wuxian finally gets to the gay station without reading the name of the station. Everyone suffers.

the real reason for the time travel is a fuzzy thing I have in mind which involves taking a certain element from 2ha (Three Forbidden Techniques) and fusing it with the ghost path invented by Wei Wuxian. I am thinking more specifically that the creature ZhanCheng do encounter on their unfortunate night hunt could give a nod to the two souls residing in Jiang Cheng's body (while he keeps having strange dreams that shouldn't belong to him. Now, I personally think that the idea of some of Wei Wuxian's tendencies to be transmitted onto Jiang Cheng via golden core exchange fucks heavily but like. What if they literally ate each other. What if I didn't know where I began and you ended. What if separating you from me would kill me. What if you doomed us both. What if—) which would fuck him over more. I mean, there's still Wen Qing left who is also trying to change the past to save her side of people, but that would involve another fiasco. Anyways

Jiang Cheng being an actually good sect leader trying to convince his father (who reportedly is like That™) that a war is coming is going to be horrendous. On top of which, Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Yanli are 100% convinced that the fever knocked Jiang Cheng silly in the head and made him worse with auditory problems, while Jiang Cheng is going, "I am acting like a normal 16 year old. Which is totally a normal and possible thing to want to achieve". Wei Wuxian himself isn't normal but even he thinks Jiang Cheng's habits are a little insane at times. Like. Diving into the lake for five hours at a time (tfw you used to cry in the lake while helping people dig out your family relics but can't tell your still alive family that lest they bring every single doctor in the jianghu to Lotus Pier AGAIN). Or other such things. I do think he might be able to convince Yu Ziyuan faster than Jiang Fengmian if he tried hard enough. But that's after the Qishan Wen Conference and after he finally says fuck it and invents evidence to get Yunmeng Jiang moving and contemplates the best way to alert the Gusu Lan Sect about the burning.

Since this is a slowburn, Chengxian do not kiss properly until like the end of the war preparations (before which Jiang Cheng strangles Meng Yao, panics, runs off, has a breakdown, swallows a whole vat of soup, cries and curses random things). Since this is also a slowburn the POV shifting is funny because it is:

JC: A war is coming. I need to make sure people do not die and Wei Wuxian does not give me a golden core and become a demonic cultivator. That's all I want, really, the fact that he's probably going to end up with some other guy is definitely not heartbreaking—

WWX: *trying hard to be normal* Shidi looks hot when talking about array formations. Did talking to Zewu-jun turn me into a cutsleeve.

anyways.

Since Jiang Cheng had managed to gain the trust of Gusu Lan Sect, the Cloud Recesses is mostly saved, which means Qingfeng-jun leads the war effort this time. Which means that the time travel plot which actually had been resting on the back burner kicks up since his backstory is very much connected to the whole schtick going on. Which also means that we get to see Yu Ziyuan yelling people's ears off as per usual, but this time it's not Wei Wuxian.

I do think about the reveal though. since in the original world, Wei Wuxian is dead for the second time and has given up his soul in trying to bring Jiang Cheng back. When Jiang Cheng figures out the whole situation, things are going to Not Go Well. Because that's exactly what he had been trying to prevent! Why can't they ever be happy without one of them being dead like that! What do you mean happiness can't be found without being writ in blood!

.......Wei Wuxian is going to have a stroke learning this.

Wen Ruohan, shortly after successfully driving the Waterborn Abyss into Caiyi Town, arranged for Wen Zhuliu to marry a man from the Gusu Lan Sect. On the one hand, to further humiliate the Gusu Lan Sect - after the Waterborn Abyss incident - and on the other hand, to control the bloodline of his Core-Melting Hand, so that the monopoly of power within the Qishan Wen Sect remains with him and his sons. Lan Qiren has now actually accepted this decree and, for the sake of fairness, compiled a list of names of eligible male cultivators of his sect, from which Wen Zhuliu was allowed to choose one. This coincidence befalls the chosen Lan Chenwu, who is informed of his fate at very short notice. Not even Wen Zhuliu's expensive gift is able to appease him now.

It was incredible to watch. Even with their eyes closed, they had such an awareness of each other they could move in unison. Their senses were so well-tuned they could sense attacks coming through the hallucinations, yet somehow, they evenly divided the attacks between them, never aiming for the same chain set. “There might be something to that soulmate business,” Someone muttered. Jiang Cheng glared in their general direction. He could fight like that with Wei Wuxian, but he’d been raised and trained with Wei Wuxian. Over a decade of being together gave them the knowledge to be in sync in a fight. Maybe not while blind. Maybe not now that he had Zidian and Wei Wuxian had Chenqing. But they were brothers. They had each others’ backs. Wei Wuxian and Hanguang-Jun, at that point, knew each other for months. Most of that time was spent in a classroom or the library. If they fought, it was against the other. Even against the Waterborne Abyss, there wasn’t that much actual fighting. They didn’t train for this, yet being together just seemed so natural. Destined. He was growing to hate that word

Wei Wuxian once again shared a look with Lan Wangji. Nie Huaisang threw a nut at him. Lan Wangji caught it easily, then looked at him oddly. The smaller man rolled his eyes, “I’m starting to hate when you and Wei-xiong do that.” Do what? Look at each other? “It is annoying,” Jiang Wanyin agreed. It wasn’t his fault they used to communicate so easily. All it took was a look, and Wei Ying seemed to understand more than he could ever convey with his words. That didn’t last forever. No, when he started cultivating with resentful energy, looking at each other no longer worked. There was dissonance where there was once harmony. And he didn’t have the words to make up for it

“So…” Nie Huaisang shifted in his seat, “Last time Wei-xiong and Hanguang-Jun were alone in a cave together they got married.” Lan Wangji narrowed his eyes at the devious young man. Nie Huaisang had always been on the periphery of his life. He’d never given him reason to focus on him before. Even now, having confirmed that he was more than he appeared to be...it didn’t bother him. Nie Huaisang still loved his brother, and Nie Mingjue would always be an honorable man. “Not married,” Uncle corrected, his voice tight. “Engaged then,” Nie Huaisang fluttered his fan, likely hiding a mischievous grin, “Are you telling me you spent a week in a cave together and nothing happened?” Lan Wangji recognized the provocation, but he couldn’t stop himself from blushing. He had debated with himself for hours how much of his time with Wei Ying he would show. He eventually decided he should stake a public claim on him. Let everyone in this room know just how dedicated he was to the love of his life. They might not understand it yet. They might still think he hardened his heart when Wei Ying turned to demonic cultivation, but they would see soon that Wei Ying really didn’t change much. They would never respect a demonic cultivator, but they did respect him. Their fear of the Yiling Patriarch would one day lead them to action. Their fear of Hanguang-Jun...perhaps that would be enough. He'd make it enough. Xichen choked on his tea, “Something happened?” “You were both injured,” Jiang Wanyin frowned. Jin Zixuan flushed, “I thought Lans were romantic.” “Oh, it doesn’t have to be romantic, Jin-xiong,” Nie Huaisang fanned himself, “Wei-xiong wouldn’t want to die a virgin.” “Huaisang,” Nie Mingjue warned. “Virgin?” Lan Wangji echoed, unsure if he wanted to know the answer or was jealous that Nie Huaisang would know this answer. “You really need to work on your jealousy,” Nie Huaisang laughed, “What? We can share porn but not our own experiences?” “Experiences,” Lan Wangji repeated again. He knew it was likely a joke, that Nie Huaisang was using this conversation to ease the tension in the room or some other reason he didn’t care for. They were on the same side so long as Wei Ying wasn’t disposable to him. “Relax, Wangji-xiong,” Nie Huaisang lowered his fan to show his grin, “Wei-xiong’s never even kissed anyone. He’s all talk.” Lan Wangji barely stopped his mouth from twitching into a pleased smile. His brother just kept coughing. Jin Guangyao patted his back, “You don’t have to look so pleased with that.” He wouldn’t love Wei Ying less if he wasn’t his first, but he couldn’t deny how satisfying it would be to be each other's one and only

“If not now, when?” Jiang Cheng retorted, “I’ve already had enough of you. Get lost!” Get lost. Jiang Cheng almost laughed at the cruel irony of his words. He kept telling Wei Wuxian to get lost, and then he was lost to them. For three months physically, for far longer in reality. They lost the old Wei Wuxian. He hung his head, ready to receive his sister’s disappointment. She wouldn’t get angry. She never got angry at him, and she especially wouldn’t hold his actions while he was grieving against him. So she would be disappointed, and it would hurt a thousand times worse than if she just struck him as he’d struck Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng told him to get lost, and he did. He should have been careful what he wished for. He hadn’t been prepared to get it.

Wei Wuxian didn’t fight back, though he did weakly grab at Jiang Cheng’s hands as the younger continued shouting, “You should’ve just let Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan die. Why should we care about their lives? Just let them die. Why did you stand up for them? Now, Yunmeng has been destroyed. My parents are gone. You are happy, aren’t you? Why?” “How dare you!” Lan Wangji would have risen if his brother hadn’t grabbed his shoulder. He would have attacked if his brother hadn’t taken his sword. He still could summon Bichen and send it across the room, but Jiang Yanli had tugged her brother closer. There were still tears in her eyes from the sight of one brother choking the other out, and in that moment, he couldn’t bear to cause her anymore pain. “How dare he what?” Nie Huaisang demanded, “Repeat the mistakes of his parents?” Xichen’s grip weakened in shock, and Lan Wangji turned his attention to the smaller man, “Aren’t all of us doing the same?” Nie Mingjue flinched, as did Lianfeng-Zun and Jin Zixuan. Lan Wangji barely kept himself from outwardly reacting. The words struck too close to his heart. He was too close to making the same mistake as his father. He was tempted to hide Wei Wuxian away in Gusu and then seclude himself from the world as punishment. As long as Wei Wuxian was safe, he would happily do so.

Lan Wangji had heard a number of Wei Ying’s cries. There was his shout of terror when facing the beast in the Wen Sect’s dungeon. There was his shout of surprise when Nie Huaisang snuck up on him. But the only cry of pain he’d heard was when he was a child. He hadn’t let out a noise when he was hurt by Wen Chao. He only whined to get pity when he was branded. Even facing the Xuanwu, where he was exhausted, he was largely silent. It was new to hear him cry out in agony. Which only proved how much pain he was in. “Jiang Wanyin doesn’t deserve this,” Lan Wangji said. “He does in Wei Wuxian’s eyes,” His brother replied. Wei Ying had terrible judgment then. But he would have to respect his sacrifice. It was too late to change it. “Wangji,” His brother pressed his sleeve to his cheek. When he drew back, Lan Wangji could see it was wet. He didn’t bother to hide his tears. Wei Ying deserved so much more than his tears.

Wei Ying loves me,” Wangji replied. “Oh,” Xichen sighed. “It was obvious,” Lianfeng-Zun commented under his breath. Lan Qiren didn’t agree, but there was such certainty in his nephews that he doubted his own instinct. It would be impossible to dissuade Wangji from this course of action now that he knew his feelings were returned. He mentally calculated how quickly they could pull together a wedding and hoped that time was enough to prevent them from eloping. Wei Wuxian was shameless and unrestrained, but he wasn’t evil. He made Wangji happy. “Then you have my blessing,” Lan Qiren said, unable to keep some bitterness out. It would be a difficult conversation with the elders. He wouldn’t let Wei Wuxian be treated like his brother’s wife, and while the disciples here perked up at his quiet words and spread them back cheerfully, there would be some resistance to integration. Even if he said it was rehabilitation. “You can present him with a ribbon after this,” Xichen permitted. “Two,” Wangji replied. “Two ribbons?” The elder of the two frowned. “Hm,” Wangji blushed slightly, “For Wei Ying and our son.” Lan Qiren closed his eyes and took a deep breath. If Wangji had met the child, and the Jiang siblings made no mention of a child, then it had to be a Wen child. A Wen child currently living in the Burial Mounds, who had been liberated from a Jin Sect labor camp. A child Lan Qiren wouldn’t have believed existed until yesterday. He released the breath slowly. His grandnephew and heir to GusuLan was living in the Burial Mounds. Being raised by Wei Wuxian no less!

Such foolishness! How could they have been so mistaken? They thought Hanguang-Jun disapproved of Wei Wuxian’s cultivation style out of his inherent righteousness! They never thought it would be anger born from worry, or that the worry came from love. This wasn’t a battle between a righteous hero and a wicked villain. This was as Nie Huaisang said earlier. A lover’s quarrel.

Lan Zhan cut the association,” Wei Wuxian corrected, “I didn’t.” If Wangji were holding anything in his hands, he would have crushed it. Lan Qiren almost wanted to crush something himself. It was frustrating to watch, and every misunderstanding was just another knot to detangle later. The only bright side was that Wangji had his work cut out for him convincing Wei Wuxian he didn’t hate him. That meant the danger of elopement was far lower. Wei Wuxian was stubborn like that.

What justice?” Jin Guangshan narrowed his eyes, “Will children decide my punishment?” “If they must,” Hanguang-Jun rose and swiftly pulled out his sword, “Shall I use Inquiry to ask the children killed at Qiongqi what they think?” “You dare!” Jin Guangshan yelled. “I do,” Hanguang-Jun stepped closer, “Submit yourself to justice.” It wasn’t a request this time. As always, there was a weight to Hanguang-Jun’s words that no one else could achieve. The Jin Sect framed Wei Wuxian and sent them into exile. The Jin Sect separated Hanguang-Jun from the love of his life. There may be an argument in there about bias in judgment, but Jin Guangshan wisely swallowed it back.

Jiang Cheng, the Golden Core, and why it's love. [PART 1]

First off, this has been a topic on my mind for a few weeks now and I've finally gotten around to putting my thoughts into a document. I was sharing my thoughts through tags and little notes in my drafts, but after some lovely encouragement from @travalerray I decided I'd go ahead and do it.

This didn't have as much focus on the fandom, but nevertheless gets my thoughts on this character and his relationship to Wei Wuxian across.

On my methods here, I went back through the manhua (mostly because it's much easier to skim through and get clips from) and I was making the draft as I went. That document turned out to be around 26 pages/11,200 words. I finalized by reordering what I wrote to make it more coherent (I hope) and added the novel clips needed so this is going to be super long.

Here we go.

The very first thing we learn about Wei Wuxian is gossip. Nothing in the first chapter is from his or Jiang Cheng's point of view. While not discussed overmuch in this, gossip is a HUGE factor in why their family relationship is so strained, including why the children are treated in much a way. This, of course, affects how Jiang Cheng navigates the world and his relationship with Wei Wuxian.

When we take a look at their youth, we can see quite a lot about their dynamic. The cloud Recesses Arc shows us:

Even when he says this, Jiang Cheng follows Wei Wuxian around pretty often when he gets into trouble. Wei Wuixian often throws his arm around Jiang Cheng and teases him. They do the whole elbowing and tussling thing.

“...You’ve already buried my corpse so many times. There’s nothing wrong with once more.” - Wei Wuxian

“Shoo, shoo! Don’t let me know the next time you’re doing such a thing! Don’t ask me to watch either!” - Jiang Cheng, in reply.

It’s very casual, reflecting certain loose boundaries due to being raised in the same household and being very close in age, while also being a contrast to what’s expected of them as people know Wei Wuixian is the son of a servant. This is a conflicting status that permeates their relationship.

Loud talking, playing, and loud arguments are common among the Yunmeng folks due to the nature of the sect’s rules and culture.

This gives us some context as to why Wei Wuixian is often speaking frequently and loudly and doing things with a looser regard for rules/politics other than just personality. It also tells us why Jiang Cheng responding to teasing and annoyance the way he does wouldn't be very noteworthy in Yunmeng.

Loudness and freeness are part of the philosophy and -- despite what his parents think - Jiang Cheng does reflect that, outside of having learned his attitude from his mother. Just differently than Wei Wuxian does. I'll come back to that.

Anyway. We get another hint at the complicated relationship and status dynamic when Lan Xichen, on the topic of the Water Ghoul hunt, says: "the head disciple and son of sect leader Jiang are quite well-known in Yunmeng.” Usually, the heir would be referred to first.

On top of this, the current social culture during this period is gradually getting tenser. Lan Xichen silently pointing to the sky to imply the waterborne abyss was a result of the Qishan Wen Sect and the others immediately getting it shows how people have gotten used to being unable to speak openly about the things happening. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian talk quickly about how there will be no repercussions or acknowledgement, but otherwise do not speak of it out loud, much less by name in public.

Still, they are children, and no one truly comprehends the scope of the Wen sect’s actions yet. Up until the Indoctrination, the biggest issue between them was Madam Yu and Jiang Fengmian’s treatment of them. They try their best to deal with it.

For example, I noticed that while Wei Wuxian is arguing, stepping forward while they talk about Yanli and the arranged marriage, he doesn’t actually punch Jin Zixuan until this:

He clearly doesn’t like that people think this and this defense is about both of the Jiang siblings.

I don’t really have to point out the camaraderie in Jiang Cheng checking on Wei Wuxian while he’s kneeling during his punishment. Despite the brashness, their whole conversation here is casual and holds no jealousy about the last comment Jin Zixuan made.

From here though, we can see how their relationship beings to become more fractured and malformed.

To start, I want to talk about Jiang Cheng’s view of Wei Wuxian and the internal philosophy that stems from his position as a sect heir. We all know Jiang Cheng complains that Wei Wuxian gets involved in other people’s business (ex. water ghoul/waterborne abyss) and this plays into the idea that Wei Wuxian is attempting to be a hero. In response to Wei Wuxian worrying about Lan Wangji’s leg injury during the indoctrination, says: “Stay out of it if you know what’s good for you.” Considering how tenuous their position is right now, this is understandable. Standing out is not a good idea, however they have no idea that their situation is much worse than they’re assuming. This is because they don’t know the Cloud Recesses were attacked, so having the Indoctrination right after is incredibly worrisome.

I’m pointing this out because it’s a fundamental difference in perspective that causes the most prominent issue between them. Jiang Cheng, like his parents, believes that if they stay out of Wen business and keep their heads down, nothing will happen, but they’re severely underestimating the Wen’s ambitions. We learn proof of this later, when Madam Yu is surprised to hear about the Supervisory Offices. Wei Wuxian, in contrast, responds to the immediate threat of the Indoctrination and is ultimately unable to strategize about the long-term political consequences.

On one hand, they’d work well as strategists, because Wei Wuxian can adapt on the fly very easily and Jiang Cheng can observe and move according to the politics overall, they do not have the luxury here. (And, as the result of canon, are unable to do so in the future.)

This is why YunmengJiang sect was so unprepared. The response to the Wen’s, from pretty much everyone, was to stay low and wait it out. The larger sects relied on their status but, unlike the LanlingJin sect, couldn’t buy patience or leniency from the Wen. Because the disciples don’t fully comprehend the scope of what’s going on, they can’t respond to anything outside of immediate circumstances and can't predict the consequences. This is an issue for every single one of them.

During the Indoctrination, the two of them argue over whether or not Wei Wuxian should carry Lan Wangji (after learning about the CR burning), and once again, Jiang Cheng approaches with a specific philosophy: “If we can’t take care of ourselves, how can we take care of other people’s difficulties?”

This, here, is why Wei Wuxian protecting the Wen’s leads to Jiang Cheng agreeing to a staged defection. He cannot protect his sect and Wei Wuxian if he continues to involve himself with the Wen remnants and their difficulties. That was not a lack of care, but quite literally a lack of strength. I'll come back to this with more detail later.

When Wei Wuxian wakes up in Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng is able to bicker with him a little about the Xuanwu, but becomes increasingly upset, even as he gives a congradulations.

His comment about how Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have helped Lan Wangji results in Madam Yu and Jiang Fengmian arguing over Wei Wuxian being favored while their son and heir is treated like he cannot understand their sect’s motto. By both Jiang Fengmian and Madam Yu's own words belittle their son, even as they argue about it.

Of course, Madam Yu is blaming Wei Wuxian for the issue, even though the thing that started the “rebellion” was MianMian being threatened with her life. She ran to hide behind Lan Wangji and Lan Zixuan. They guard her by their own choice and only block her. Jin Zixuan arguing with Wen Chao causes Wang Lingjiao to order the soldiers to attack. Only after that does Wei Wuxian unsettle Wen Chao by reciting one of their ancestors. It’s unsurprising that Madam Yu never bothers to learn the circumstances. Nor that she dismisses the threat that the Wen’s truly pose.

I'm not blaming her for the attack on Lotus Pier, only her willful misunderstanding of the situation.

I want to note something here.

“One day he’ll definitely land our clan in some serious trouble.”

“Sect leader Jiang, take a good look at your biological son. I’m sure you know about the rumors, that people think Wei Ying is your..”

Madam Yu is angry because of the rumors. She is angry at Wei Wuxian because people believe he is Jiang Fengmian’s bastard. That she's been disrespected and dishonored. Jiang Cheng is upset because his father hates his mother – and by extension, him – and favors Wei Wuxian as a result. That's not even getting into his father's feelings for Canse Sanren.

Jiang Cheng is hurt and jealous because Wei Wuxian is noted as being able to follow the sect motto while he is scolded for not being able to. Here, his actions after the indoctrination went unsupported and unacknowledged. This is a very reasonable thing to be upset about. Pitting people so close in age, especially those raised together, is super unhealthy -- not to mention unfair-- especially for the one overshadowed.

Like how Yu Ziyuan can't seem to break out of Canse Sanren's shadow in her husband's eyes, or even the eyes of the public due to the favoritism, Jiang Cheng cannot either. Are their reactions always proportional? No, but there is a reason behind them.

Wei Wuxian responds by reassuring Jiang Cheng that even if he doesn’t understand or follow the sect motto by tradition, he can still be a great sect leader. This calms Jiang Cheng down enough that Wei Wuxian can put an arm around his shoulders again.

Here, Wei Wuxian promises: “In the future, you’ll be the sect leader and I’ll be your subordinate, just like your father and mine.”

I want to talk about what Wei Wuxian is actually saying here.

Yes, they can be the Twin Prides of Yunmeng, but the position he offers is one of servitude. Literally.

In an attempt to reduce the tension between them, he leans into the perception that he is the son of a servant and offers to fulfill that role for Jiang Cheng* as his father had (“Wei Changze–Jiang Fengmian’s most loyal servant.”). Wei Wuxian is not doing this from a place of self-depreciation (as we know from how he talks about his parentage) but is probably an unconscious comparison to make Jiang Cheng feel less threatened. As head disciple, he shouldn’t really compare it to their father's relationship or positions, but he does. I don’t think Jiang Cheng caught it.

*This is an issue that will crop up again later.

Half a month after the disciples returned from the indoctrination, Wang Lingjiao comes to Lotus Pier. They use an archery target as “proof” that a younger disciple is plotting against the Wen sect. This already tells us they just want an excuse to start trouble.

Then, Wang Lingjiao says she came to punish someone (WWX). She actually uses the rumors about Wei Wuxian’s parentage to goad Madam Yu into listening to her, by implying that protecting Wei Wuxian would be lending credit to them. This is a great example of how gossip has a huge influence on how people are perceived and the power it can wield over certain politics.

Madam Yu does whip Wei Wuxian, saying: “...hadn’t I told you, long ago, you…unruly thing! Sooner or later, you’ll bring trouble to the Jiang clan!” Note the dehumanizing language.

Jiang Cheng is trying to stop his mother but is physically restrained by her two servants.

“While Madam Yu always pelted him with hostile words, she’d never really hit him hard before—two or three lashes at most, or being made to kneel or confined indoors, and it never took Jiang Fengmian long to release him from that. But this time, he took dozens of hits from that whip, each lash so hard his back burned with pain until it went numb.”

Remember, he ends up walking around and carrying Jiang Cheng with these injuries. He didn't truly complain about his injuries during the Indoctrination, and he doesn't -- even once -- complain here.

After finishing, she tells Wang Lingjiao that it would take at least a month to heal. When WLJ says she can chop off one of his arms and be left alone, Madam Yu genuinely looks to be considering it. Jiang Cheng breaks away from the servant’s and covers Wei Wuxian’s body, telling his mother: “...It’s not like what she said at all…” [Regardless of what Jiang Cheng says in the immediate aftermath of seeing Lotus Pier, this is what he thought.]

Besides that, the only reason she didn’t was because Wang Lingjiao mentioned the Supervisory Office. Jiang Cheng trying to hold her in place doesn’t seem to deter her at all.

We could talk all day about the parenting of Madam Yu (and Jiang Fengmian), but it's not the point here, so I'll go on.

It takes two hours for Lotus Pier to be annihilated. That’s it.

Right after, he starts to cry because he wants his parents.

While his actions here were hurtful, it is not entirely intentional or malicious. Logically, he understands there was little to stop them from coming, but emotions won’t be soothed by that, so all he has is his pain and rage.

And once Jiang Cheng is rescued from Lotus Pier. Well.

Wei Wuxian mentions his self-esteem for a reason.

“I want revenge but…I don’t have a golden core anymore. How can I get revenge now? Core-melting hand. Hahahahahaha. Core-melting hand. Wei Wuxian, why did you save me? To let me live in this and understand that I can’t change anything?!”

He’s literally having a breakdown due to trauma and stress.

He attacks Wen Ning and is worried that Wei Wuxian brought them into a trap (fair concern). He chokes Wei Wuxian again for a moment before Wen Qing steps in. Jiang Cheng was mostly laughing and shouting here, and I have no idea (am given no indication even later) if he remembers any of this.

They stay in Yiling for 3 days and Jiang Cheng looks…Well dead inside. He’s mostly distant now that his initial rage is dampened. Wei Wuxian brings his spirit up by mentioning the golden core. Note here that Wei Wuxian wants to get revenge as well. He wants Jiang Cheng to be able to get his revenge. He went out of his way to do research in the novels to help achieve this. I don’t think I have to elaborate on why this is a contributing factor in the Golden Core Transfer.

Wei Wuixian leads Jiang Cheng to the mountain and says he can receive a golden core with the help of Baoshan Sanren, and remains there for 7 days. We don’t see Wei Wuxian’s thought process in the manhua, and I'll go into more detail later.

Unfortunately, when he tries to go to the town and into a winehouse, he gets cornered by Wen Chao and his goonies. Then you know, the burial mounds happened.

There's so much happening after Wei Wuxian's return, but for the most part, their personal relationship remains quite good.

Look at how happy Jiang Cheng is to see Wei Wuxian again. His words are fond.

Wei Wuxian looks tired and less happy, but not upset either. Unsurprisingly, Jiang Cheng's response to worry and relief is to yell a bit and lightly punch him. It's not at all malicious and is typical of close male friends.

When Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian have *their* typical brand of misunderstanding here, Jiang Cheng is quick to step between them and support Wei Wuxian as his sect leader.

This is the first time he's given the opportunity to do so, and yet, during the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, we see Jiang Cheng overhearing gossip, having the strength of the Yunmeng Jiang sect attributed to Wei Wuxian, once again with no acknowledgement of his work to rebuild the sect. His insecurities over this are deeply rooted, but the more external pressure he faces over it, the deeper the wedge between them becomes.

[We hear Jin Guangyao point out the weakness of this wedge outright, years later, but it's still surprising to see how much manipulation was going into that, and how much is due to sect weakness.]

In the aftermath of Wei Wuxian liberating Qionqi path, Jiang Cheng attempts to soothe the distrust and anger shown by the other sects, but Jin Guangshan specifically plays at his insecurities and lack of support to guide him to abandoning Wei Wuxian.

Stating: “Wei Ying is your right-hand man. You value him a lot. However, whether or not he respects a sect leader like you is hard to tell. During the flower banquet, he dared to throw a fit right in front of you. Yesterday, he was even more presumptuous with his back on you.”

JGS continues: “He even dared to say something like ‘I never look up to Jiang Wanyin, this sect leader! --” and this is an outright lie. Lan Wangji tries to push against this; however, the Jin’s follow up with their own additions and ultimately speak louder.

MianMian struggles with this as well, when she tries to defend WWX’s actions at Qionqi path. Her words, of course, are dismissed due to misogyny, more so than sect power dynamics. Even so, her words here are extremely relevant: “Fine! Your voices are louder! Fine! You’re the rational ones!”

Her statement here is exactly why this happens:

He does not have the political backing nor experience to outweigh everyone else, and their voices are so loud that his words end up carrying no meaning and no weight. Look at the expression there. He's not even frustrated, he just seems sideswept by it.

Jiang Cheng did not want to. He supported Wei Wuxian and was trying to protect the Wen’s due to Wen Ning and Wen Qing’s support. He is ultimately outweighed and outnumbered, regardless of how true Wei Wuxian’s claims about the prisoners or Jiang Cheng’s promises of alliance actually are.

Initially, Jiang Cheng's visit to the burial mound is pretty non-judgmental. it's not until they being to discuss Wen Ning that the fractures forming show.

“Don’t you know how many eyes are watching you right now? We burn this corpse right now and return all of these remnants of the Wen sect, that way people will stop talking!”

We can talk all we want about Wei Wuxian’s goal here, but Jiang Cheng is in a completely different position. He’s a young, inexperienced sect leader and his sect is still diminished. Wei Wuxian is not trusted and the only people who spoke in support of either of them were shouted into silence. Right now, he does not have the room to think about how to protect the Wens, only how to reduce the backlash Wei Wuxian and his sect will face for it.

Not to mention, those in power fear Wei Wuxian’s strength while also seeking his Stygian Tiger Seal.

Everyone is familiar with this panel. But I think people often ignore its context (or its actual meaning entirely) when discussing Jiang Cheng as a character. He is taking Wei Wuxian’s side. He’s also saying that Wei Wuxian’s attempts at justice will not be regarded positively.

“Do you want me to say it clearer? If you insist on protecting them, then I won’t be able to protect you.”

Wei Wuxian is the one who decides that Jiang Cheng – and the Jiang sect – should not protect him. Jiang Cheng never even implied such. In fact, he says the opposite. This is relevant because it speaks to how their goals, restrictions, and philosophies are different.

Jiang Cheng wants to protect his sect and stay out of other people’s business as they do not have the political clout or manpower to support anyone else. Wei Wuxian has no limitations because he no longer plays an active role as head disciple, and his own moral compass tells him that it’s more important to protect the Wens – the people currently facing an injustice – over safety. Both of them are unwilling to give up on their goal of protecting someone, and the current situation doesn’t allow for much compromise between these two things. Protecting the Wens automatically makes Wei Wuxian’s goal a threat to the current powers and Jiang Cheng knows it.

That doesn't mean he wanted to denounce Wei Wuxian, though.

And yes, he snarks here about Wei Wuxian understanding the Jiang sect motto more than him but has no space to linger on it. Instead, he proposes for a duel.

I want to point out that Jiang Cheng has no idea what the state of the prison camps were like as he had no chance to actually investigate. All he has is Wei Wuxian’s claims and everyone else’s scorn and manipulations.

Also, him stabbing Wei Wuxian can look pretty bad, but remember, Jiang Cheng does not know about the Golden Core Transfer, so he has no way to gauge the risks properly. And considering Wen Ning was involved in the duel for at least some of it, not using his sword would immediately give them away. Zidian is likely avoided because it’s a bit too. hm. Real.

The emotions driving their actions are genuine, even if the duel itself was staged.

In the end, it came down to protection for justice and debt (to Wen Qing and Wen Ning) vs. protection for security and stability.

This is a conversation between LWJ and WWX, but at its core is the whole issue:

“To be honest, I’d like to ask as well. If not like this, what else can I do? Give up the demonic path? Then what about the people on this mountain? Give them up? I can’t do that. Neither can you.* Is there anyone who could give me a nice broad road to walk on? A road where, even without the ghost path, I could still protect the ones I wish to protect.”

*And neither could Jiang Cheng. He can't give up on his sect.

Wei Wuxian holds no grudge over this because there was not really any other option. Because of the communication issues between them in general, they could not have had such a frank question of their options. Lan Wangji does not have the external pressure of a sect on his shoulders restricting him and he’s clearly weighing the risks. Jiang Cheng can care as much as he wants and can want to protect Wei Wuxian with all his strength, but unless they could talk like this and could open another path, they wouldn’t have been able to fulfill both goals.

Even after their duel though, Jiang Cheng arranged for Wei Wuxian to locate him and see Yanli in her wedding robes. He’s the one who got the idea of Wei Wuxian giving Jin Ling his courtesy name. Despite all circumstances, he’s still trying to keep Wei Wuxian as part of their lives. They even talk about the duel they had in a casual way. You can take Jiang Cheng's brutish words at face value, but his actions are telling us how much he cares, and his circumstances are telling us how much of a struggle it actually is. He even warns Wei Wuxian of it.

He adds: “You never listen to any of my opinions. One day, you’ll come to understand that what I said was right.” Fandom often mentions Jiang Cheng’s arrogance but let’s be real, Wei Wuxian is severely underestimating the dangers around him, and Jiang Cheng is right. Because he’s involved with the current politics, he can see that people will not be willing to leave them alone.

They get one year of peace. No more.

The saddest thing is Jin Zixuan had genuinely invited Wei Wuxian to Jin Ling’s one month banquet. None of them could have even imagined that Jin Zixun would set up an ambush, nor did anyone know about Jin Guangyao playing behind the curtains for his father. Due to lack of information, they had no way to prepare. Wei Wuxian struggling to manage his emotional response to the situation is only one factor. Jin Zixuan wouldn't have been there without someone influencing him to.

By the way, Wei Wuxian being blamed for something he didn’t do, with no opportunity to defend himself proves Jiang Cheng’s point. He didn’t do anything for a year. And he was still the villain somehow. They did not care to figure out the truth. They already decided Wei Wuxian was guilty and that his death would be justified.

As a result, Wen Ning and Wen Qing sacrifice themselves in hope that the Lanling Jin sect will leave Wei Wuxian alone. The themes of love and sacrifice are repeated to us again.

I have no idea why Yanli would be at a siege conference, but she was. She went outside searching for Wei Wuxian specifically because she wanted to see him, and because she wanted to help him. When it comes to each other, the three of them are very impulsive and irrational. This is very much a mutual issue.

She saw a threat to her A-Xian, even as he began to stop the corpses, and jumped to defend him. She would’ve been safe had she stayed in JC’s arms (or WWX’s in the novels, I think), but it was instinctive.

[And again.]

I’m not surprised this, of all things, would severely damage Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian's relationship. And using the Stygian Tiger Seal makes sense in context, but now, there’s nothing that can convince the others to leave the Burial mounds alone. Jiang Cheng wouldn't be able to argue for rehabilitation even if he tried.

The fact that this siege ends in Wei Wuxian's death and still isn't the end of their relationship is just. yeah. I'll be going over that in part 2.

Wei Wuxian grew up around the Burial Mounds and started his own sect with the Dafan Wens and here they have their first outing assiting the Lan Sect with dealing with the Waterborne Abyss. Lan Wangji meets him after the fight and takes care of him and ah, they are just so cute and I love how they immediately click, like two puzzle pieces fitting into place. Excerpt: "There is no need for thanks." Lan Wangji started to make tea, his movements precise and elegant. "You are one of the demonic cultivators." "Yes. You -- your sect -- invited us here." The feeling was returning to Wei Wuxian's hands and feet in pinpricks of sensation, the warmth of the tent sinking in, and what he actually wanted to do was curl up next to the braiser and sleep. "We had word of your efforts in Yiling, on the river that was affected by the Burial Mounds runoff." Lan Wangji placed a cup of tea in front of Wei Wuxian. "And it seemed obvious that you would be expert with ghouls." Wei Wuxian couldn't fault that logic. And until this moment he had wondered if maybe the Lan sect had invited them accidentally somehow, and not as a deliberate, sensible quest for helpful knowledge. "Sorry we haven't been more, um, friendly. I bet everyone thinks we won't invite people to our tent because it's full of demonic evil, but really we're worried that if the sects see our dirty laundry it'll ruin the whole Burial Mounds mystique." He still sounded like a raspy crow, rambling. He sipped the tea, the warmth clearing his thoughts, and pulled himself back to the point. "We've had some issues with the other sects, at times. The Jin, the Su."

With the announcement of the clear delineation between Furina vs Focalors, most markets have gracefully incorporated the news. In the ship markets, little has changed, with most ships clearly indexed on Furina. The ships most strongly affected are the Neuvillette ones due to immortality and proximity.

Focalors/Neuvillette — HOLD OR BUY. Not only is it absorbing all the investors fleeing the Egeria/Neuvillette (SELL) write-off, but he receives 70% of Focalors's screen time and 100% of her sass. Would watch her monologue at him again.

Furina/Focalors — meme stock. Sorry. You do you, but our analysts say the "twincest but mommy issues" thing is funny for about five seconds but then that's it. SELL.

Furina/Neuvillette — BUY BUY BUY. Largely untouched by the stock split. With Furina having shed the "immature kid" accusations entirely, and with Neuvillette's exclusive front row seat to her entire 500 year performance, the market is having a renaissance right now.

Furina/Sandrone — HOLD OR BUY. A small handful of creators are doing amazing work in this space but it's hard to judge.

Ann/Caterpillar — No chemistry. Their potential dynamic is interesting but (unlike most of the populace of Fontaine) the ship doesn't hold water. SELL

Finch/Callirhoe — HOLD OR BUY depending on whether someone figures out a smut concept involving the teardrop gift thing.

Xingqiu/Chongyun — HOLD. Surprisingly, their interactions in the Waterborne Poetry had no upward or downward pressure on the ship whatsoever. I say surprisingly but um. Did they even get lines with each other. Yang! Chongyun finally appeared on screen though, which is a boon to anyone trying to show one of his more manic moments.

Nahida/Apep — SELL IMMEDIATELY. If anyone approaches you saying this is the next Neuvifuri, it's a scam. Don't fall for it.

Freminet/Neuvillette — oh come on I'm pretty sure the analysts are making things up at this point. Have they even interacted outside that conspiracy picnic at Navia's?

Diona/Callirhoe — yeah they're trolling me.

Hello! I just finished the novel and recently got into MDZS tumblr and saw some posts that confused me. Are the Lan Sect so bad that Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi would be happier out of the sects entirely? I thought they seemed pretty happy at the end of the book, but did I miss something? So many people insist they’re sexist and abusive and I don’t get it. Aren’t they descended from a Buddhist priest?

I’m hoping you can help because you seem like a pretty reasonable person, even if you do have a Jiang Cheng fan name.

For a lot of this certain flavor of fandom discord, I think it comes down partly to "what I would have preferred as an end for Wangxian" and what MXTX was playing with thematically for them as characters when she wrote what was their happy end. In regards to the Lans, there are multiple instances of Wei Wuxian being enamored by Lans way of life in general and finding it amusing. This amusement seems to grow into genuine interest in what they as a whole represent, regardless of the likes of some such as Lan Qiren's very rigid view on clan principles.

In part, yes the Lan Clan holds fault as much as the other clans. Many of the sect chose propriety over even some of it's own teachings messages. However, the point of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, is that they have no need to hold further grudge or hate. This is what the Guanyin Temple showdown was addressing. The cycle of grudges is never ending, what use is it to continue that instead of taking hold of their lives and gaining what THEY want and consider their happiness.

Unfortunately in real life, you will still associate with people who aren't going to view you favorably. But so what? It's what you do with that fact that matters. Wei Wuxian does not care what others think aside from those he does hold close. It is tiring to waste time trying to please others because of their own dislike, it also isn't his responsibility to make them comfortable. He most certainly doesn't TRY to or make note of needing to please a single person who hates/dislikes him, and in tandem obviously others follow along with this and ignore Lan Qiren.

A passage to show if it really was important they could up and leave whenever from Wei Wuxian himself,

Wei Wuxian was still talking, “Where are we going next? I haven’t had Emperor’s Smile in a long time. How about we go back to Gusu and mess around for awhile in Caiyi first?

Lan Wangji said, "Sure.”

Wei Wuxian continued on, "It’s been so many years. the waterborn abyss near there should be completely cleaned up, right? If your uncle can bear the sight of me, then hide me along with those jars of wine under your floor, if he can’t, then let’s go find somewhere else. I heard Sizhui and the others are are amusing themselves night hunting with Wen Ning lately.

Lan Wangji consented with a "Mn.”

He is not at all uncomfortable, he enjoys being a nuisance to people that don't like him and very much relishes being a sore spot for those sort of people, especially Lan Qiren who at this point in the work the audience SHOULD realize, is a joke of an authority and no one bothers to listen to seriously any longer.

#xiantober Day 21: Ghost Ladies

There are three ladies.

Wei Wuxian found them one day and communicated with them to see how he could help them move on.

None of them desire to move on yet, they all long to stay by his side. They want to feel safe. They want to feel loved.

All three of them went through their too-short lives, longing for someone to love them and care for them. Their families praised their brothers and all but ignored them.

Wei Wuxian saw their pain and welcomed them easily.

So, they walk with him.

The three ladies stay by his side, chittering away with each other and him. He makes sure to give them attention when they desire it and physical affection when they want. He cares for them deeply.

They are beautiful women taken from the world too soon, he mourns them.

Wei Wuxian wishes he could have known them in life.

The ladies often gossip about anything and everything. Wei Wuxian gladly joins them as he drinks wine. They cuddle up to him, resting their heads in his lap as he caresses their hair softly.

It helps him too.

Wei Wuxian has always been a tactile person. He thrives on physical touch and affection, throwing himself at his friends. Lan Wangji was the person he longed to touch most but also the one he could touch least. Lan Wangji doesn't like touch.

It's different now.

Now, after everything that's happened, Wei Wuxian can't touch people like he used to. He doesn't want to risk them knowing. He can't risk them finding out just how much of him has changed—just how much of him is /gone/.

He misses the easy touching he had with many people.

These ladies help him just as much as he helps them.

The gentle pressure of them against him. The slide of their hair against his palm. It soothes him.

Sometimes, they sing to him when his facade cracks a little too much and they see the pain and sadness beneath.

They sing soft songs to him.

And on days when he's feeling better, they listen to him talk. He tells them all about Lan Wangji. He tells them of how they met, how he teased him and wanted to be his friend. He shares the story of the waterborne abyss and xuanwu of slaughter.

He happily shares his memories of Lan Wangji with his ladies and they listen.

And they tease.

They look at him with cheeky grins and whisper about how in love he must be.

He sighs as he stares out the window, wind blowing his hair. He is, isn't he?

He's in love.

The thought settles in him like it was always there, just waiting to be acknowledged. Waiting to be given a name.

Love.

The ladies watch as he smiles to himself, thinking about how Lan Wangji's hair shifts in the wind.

He loves Lan Wangji. He's in love with Lan Wangji.

And nothing can come of it.

Lan Wangji can't know what Wei Wuxian has done. Not yet, at least. Maybe someday. Maybe, if things change, Wei Wuxian can allow himself to be selfish. Maybe, if things were different, Wei Wuxian could let Lan Wangji in.

He doesn't want to hurt Lan Wangji. He doesn't want to drag him down.

It's all such a complicated mess and Wei Wuxian, unfortunately, can't worry about that right now. But he loves Lan Wangji, and that will never change.

He hopes, someday, he can spend time with him again.

For now, Wei Wuxian has the ladies. Until they are ready to move on.

And one day, Lan Wangji walks by the inn he's drinking at. He isn't the one who notices him, but one of the ladies. She tells him, excited, that the one he loves is below. He laughs to himself at that.

They've never seen Lan Wangji before but they know him so easily purely from how much he has talked of him and described him. So silly.

Wei Wuxian asks the girls to grab some flowers so he can shower Lan Wangji with them, not willing to pass up the opportunity.

They do so with glee. Together, they shower Lan Wangji in flowers and petals until one final flower floats down from where Wei Wuxian is seated and Lan Wangji's gaze lifts to meet his.

Wei Wuxian smiles.

Maybe someday.

Maybe someday he can have more.

I can’t seem to remember anything else besides there being a focus on Wei Wuxian’s volatile nature and battle prowess due to his Veela blood. He may have also killed a guy, or at least severely harmed some guy in self defense. I loved their world building and I’m so upset that I’ve lost both of them. Thank you for the help in advance.

Secondly, I would like help to find a fic, from what I remember Wei Ying was drunk on the rooftop when someone approached. In his drunken state, he thinks it was Lan Wangji that showed up so he goes on saying things like are you here to punish me again. He also asks why Lan Wangji hates him so much, but the whole entire time it was actually Lan Xichen he was talking to. I think it takes place after he got punished for drinking in Cloud Recess, and then something happens and he almost falls off the roof but Lan Xichen catches him. Lan Wangji had apparently witnessed the whole thing and tried to apologize but Lan Xichen coldly tells him the apology should be given to Wei Ying instead when he wakes up.
