On the occasion of Far Cry 5’s fifth anniversary, they played the game live on Ubisoft’s Twitch channel. The stream was hosted by Chris Watters and featured Drew Holmes, the lead writer, as a special guest to talk about the game and answer a few questions. Here is a summary of what they said.

Drew Holmes explained he started working on Far Cry 5 around January or February 2016. He had played the previous Far Cry games but it was his first time working on one. He’s never been to Montana, but a large portion of the team visited the state before he joined Ubisoft. When asked what his feelings were, five years ago, when they were about to release Far Cry 5, he said launching a game is always weird because you work on it for years and, when it’s finally “out in the wild”, you suddenly have no control over it anymore. As a developer, you hope players will like it, but you are never sure… Thankfully, in this case, the reception was great, and it was even the best launch for a Far Cry game at the time.

As the lead writer, his job was to write, of course (mostly the cutscenes), but he was also involved in the casting process, supervised the performance capture shoots, and worked closely with the writing staff (which was “huge”) as well as all the other teams to make sure everything was “cohesive”. Each region had its own main writer so communication was essential, especially on a game as big as this one.

It was important for them that the story wasn’t just told in main missions and cutscenes; the world had to feel alive and believable. Information can be gathered through talking with NPCs, playing side missions, and reading documents, so everything moves the story forward. They also wanted the characters’ personalities to feel real and made sure each of them was clearly part of the game’s world, even the Seeds, whose impact on that county they’ve been living in for years had to be tangible. When they created the Guns for Hire, they wanted them to have strong personalities and unique abilities. These characters have all grown up in Hope County, know each other “to varying degrees”, and have a history with the locations, so everything they say had to reflect this.

They recruited Sharky during the live stream so they talked a bit more about him. Drew Holmes said they imagined this character before they got the idea of bringing “long-time Far Cry superstar” Hurk back in Far Cry 5. When they decided that they were cousins and what their relationship was like (Sharky admires his older cousin, the “world traveler”), it became easier for them to write him and for Dylan Taylor, who plays both characters, to get inspired. He ended up improvising about 75% of Hurk’s lines… which was great but would sometimes become a problem because missions are written and designed a certain way.

As he had already revealed recently, Drew Holmes had “no idea” all the Guns for Hire could hang out at the 8-Bit Pizza Bar. He even initially wondered if people on social media were “lying” about this because, although the team did want to create a place for these characters to meet and talk to each other (because many conversations were written and recorded), they had been told including that in the game wouldn’t be possible. But it turns out one of the devs did it in secret anyway, much to everyone’s surprise and delight.

Drew Holmes particularly enjoys the Prepper Stashes because they all have “a great puzzle design” thanks to “smart level designers”, and because they also give information about the world. They are an opportunity for players to “breathe” and experience “contemplative exploration”.

In Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4, he thought the story was more linear, while in Far Cry 5, they needed to have “a 360 approach” and think about all the ways players could play the missions. In previous games, he also thought the cutscenes were mostly people talking and that players were just spectators, and he said that’s one of the limits of first-person games. In Far Cry 5, the goal was to make players feel like they were part of the action and not just the camera. This is why we carry crates to help Mary May after liberating Fall’s End, for example, or fly with Faith the first time we visit the Bliss.

Speaking of this scene, Drew Holmes said they wanted Jenessa Grant to actually “fly” so the cutscene would have a “weird ethereal quality” to it. To achieve this, they didn’t tie her to a rope… but hired ballet dancers to carry her around! This scene, which he remembers writing at 3 am one night, took about half a day to rehearse, but it was worth it.

There were other stunts in the game that forced the team to think of creative ways to shoot the scenes in performance capture and achieve the results they wanted. They built a fake helicopter for the opening mission and flipped it over with everyone inside, including “the Randycam” (Randy Yuen, camera specialist, who “played” the Deputy), so they really were upside down. And when the Marshal swims out of the car at the end of the prologue, they made a stuntman “swim through the air on a rig”. Drew Holmes gave a shout-out to David Footman, cinematic director, for all his “crazy ideas”.

When Chris talked about how cool he thought the opening cinematic was because learning about Eden’s Gate through interviews and from other characters’ points of view was a great idea, Drew Holmes explained that what they say is inspired by how real-life cults operate. Usually, at first, a few people move in, buy some land to “get a foothold”, and are joined by more and more people until they can be “the majority on the city council” and start passing laws. Then, they basically own the town, and other people either join them or go live elsewhere, but those who want to leave can’t sell their properties because the cult has driven the prices down… That’s basically the stories the team heard when they did research and worked with cult advisors.

Chris also asked about the Seed family and why they are always so close to the camera (and the player). Drew Holmes said there are several reasons. First, because they wanted the game to be immersive, they needed other characters (not just the Seeds) to have this proximity with the Deputy, to engage the player as a person and make them feel involved. Second, they had a very talented cast, so the closer the camera is, the better you can appreciate the “strong performances” they all delivered. And finally, when villains invade your personal space, you “tense up” and it’s “uncomfortable”, and the dev team wanted this too. In video games, he said it’s important to think about “what you want, emotionally, from the players”.

When asked who he thought the “most twisted” Herald was, he initially answered it was “a tie” between John and Jacob because the former tortures people and the latter “ate his friend” (which “sets you on a weird path” in life). At first, he said that, compared to her brothers, Faith was “more of a victim of Joseph”, but on second thought, since she’s “taken and run with it”, and because of the way she used the Deputy’s friends and killed “poor Virgil” as well as Burke, he concluded she was, in fact, as twisted as the other two. In the end, he thinks they are “all pretty bad”.

He was also asked about the Deputy and who they were as an individual. He sees them as someone who would always do whatever they can to help the people around them but who suddenly finds themselves “thrust into this insane situation”. They are a young, normal person in “a crazy context”, but also the only one who can truly do something about it and make a difference. But because they are a silent protagonist, making them feel like a real person was challenging, and this is why the rest of the cast had to be “very fleshed out”. Other characters had to be able to give some perception of what the Deputy would say if they had a voice.

It’s hard for Drew Holmes to pick a favorite mission or storyline in Far Cry 5, but he would probably choose one of Hurk Drubman Senior’s missions… even though he admits he’s a “very divisive character” and even a “piece of crap”. He also thinks Kim Rye is great, and the “Butch and Sundance” joke is one of his favorites.

Fun fact: they used the same animation for when the Deputy is on fire and when they are attacked by bees. He humorously called it “efficiency” and said that, when you tell people to act like they’re “putting out fire” or “swatting bees”, they do the same thing anyway.

“Here, happy Valentine’s Day,” Seungmin tells you as he hands you a box of chocolates.

“Why are you giving my sibling a Valentine’s Day gift?” Your brother cut in before you could properly thank Seungmin.

“Calm down. He’s clearly just being nice,” you say, taking the box from Seungmin’s hand.

“Yeah, acting like I didn’t give you a box of chocolates too bro.”

“I’m just making sure you remember the rule. Y/n is off limits,” your brother reminds.

“And my friends are off limits from you,” you reminded him. There was this rule you and your brother had. You guys weren’t allowed to date each other’s friends. Your brother developed the rule first when you were back in middle school after he saw you looking at one of his friends with heart eyes. He told you that your little crush needed to die because his friends were off limits. To which you rebuttal that your friends are off limits too. It was more of a petty thing on your end. Truthfully you didn’t really care if your friends were to take an interest in your brother and date him, but since your brother had the audacity to tell you to stay away from his friends. You thought it was only fair to tell him to stay away from your friends too.

Now you're in your junior year of highschool, your brother in his senior year and your “friends are off limits” rule still stands. You thanked Seungmin for the box of chocolates and headed to your room. You sat down at your desk and looked at the box of chocolates for a moment before taking off the lid. You picked up a piece of chocolate and plopped it into your mouth. You’re a bit surprised that Seungmin actually got you something. You had only met him twice before.

The first time was a brief encounter. You were waiting for your brother at your designated meeting spot that you would meet at before heading home together. Today was a little different as your brother approached you, you noticed that there was someone else walking alongside him.

“Hold my bag for a sec.” Your brother dropped his bag in your arms before opening it up and looking through it.

“Why do I have to hold it?” you complained.

“Just for a sec. Stop whining. This is my sibling y/n by the way.” Your brother fished out his binder from his bag and opened it.

“I’m Seungmin,” the guy introduced himself. Your brother hands Seungmin some papers then puts his binder back in his bag and takes it back from you. He gave Seungmin a quick bye and that was it. You didn’t even get to say a single word to Seungmin.

The second time you met Seungmin you actually got to talk to him. Your brother had invited Seungmin over for the weekend. You walked into your living room to see the two of them playing games while sitting on the couch.

“That’s y/n you met them before,” your brother states.

“For like ten seconds” you remarked. Seungmin laughs at your comment. Your brother turns to look at Seungmin, but you can’t see his face. “I’m grabbing a water, do you want anything Seungmin?” you offered.

“Yeah I’ll take water, thanks,” Seungmin responds. You head to the kitchen to grab the watters.

“Grab me one too!” your brother yells. You grabbed three waters from the fridge then went back to the living room.

“Here,” you handed the cool bottle to Seungmin.

“Thanks,” he smiled. You tossed the other water at your brother then returned back to your room.

The front door swings open and you hear multiple pairs of footsteps enter along with some chatter. It’s your brother and his friends. Only minutes after you heard the group of boys arrive you heard a knock on your door.

“Yeah!” you called out. Your door knob rustles as it turns and followed by your bedroom door pops open.

“Happy Valentine’s Day.” Seungmin appears holding a heart shaped box of chocolates and a tiny bear stuffed animal. You can’t contain the smile from your face, climbing off your bed to walk over to Seungmin.

“Thank you.” You take the bear and chocolates from his hands.

“The bear came with the chocolates,” he tells you. No it didn’t, but Seungmin is scared buying you a stuffed animal and chocolates may seem like a bit too much for him “just being nice”.

“I didn’t ask,” you played. “I got you chocolates too, hold on.” you walked over to your desk grabbing the small box of chocolates you got for Seungmin.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” you express, trying to not let a shade of pink take over your cheeks.You hand him the box.

“Thanks. You didn’t have to,” he said, taking the box.

“You don’t have to get me anything either,” you told him.

“I want to,” he says.

“I want to too.” you laughed lightly, so did Seungmin.

“What’s taking you so long? Do I need to drag you out of here?” Your brother suddenly entered your room.

“Relax. We were just talking,” you say. Seungmin was very sly with the way he slid the box of chocolates you gave him into his pocket. You didn’t even see him do it yourself, you only noticed that the box was no longer in his hand. Your brother proceeds to lead Seungmin out of the room. After Seungmin is gone your brother turns back to you, opening his mouth.

“He’s off limits I know,” you state.

“I-well yes he is, but that’s not what I was gonna say. I was gonna ask, didn't you have plans with y/f/n today?” he asks.

“That’s this weekend. They’re working today,” you inform.

“Oh. Stay in your room then don’t bother us,” your brother orders you.

“Yes sir,” you replied sarcastically while laughing. It was a bit weird though. Yes your brother told you that his friends were off limits, but he never made you stay away from them physically.

“So I’m not allowed to break our rule, but you are?” You popped up in front of your brother as he was hugging your friend after giving them the Valentine’s Day presents he got for them. Your brother immediately jumps away from your friend.

“You’re not supposed to be home,” he says in a panic.

“Actually I never had any plans. I knew about you dating y/f/n since the beginning of your two’s relationship.” You wrapped one of your arms around your friend, pulling them into a side hug. “I just thought today would be a fun day to confront you about it and y/f/n agreed,” you smiled. Your brother looks at y/f/n with a face of betrayal, but you have a bigger bone to pick with him. “Are your friends still off limits?” you arched your eyebrow at your brother. He remains silent.

“Yes. I told you they were off limits for a reason,” he says.

“Then you and y/f/n have to break up,” you tell him.

“What? You can’t-”

“I can’t what?” you cut him off “I told you my friends were off limits too. You’re being such a hypocrite right now. I don’t care if this is a complete bitch move. If I can’t date your friends then you can’t date mine. Break up right now!” you rant out angrily.

“Y/n seriously?”

“Right now!” you half yelled, stomping one foot.

“O-ok fine.” Your brother raises his hand in surender. “If you want to date my friends go ahead. Let’s stop our rule.” A smile grazes across your face. You swipe your hair away from your face with one hand.

“Pleasure doing business with you. You two have fun.” You went to head out of the door.

“Wait! You weren’t actually mad or was that just a really fast mood swing and I thought you said you didn’t have any plans!” Your brother hollers when you're already halfway out the door.

“I have plans now!” you called out, shutting the door behind you. Your plans: find Seungmin.

You found Seungmin at a cafe. You knocked on the window to get Seungmin’s attention. His eyes widened when he saw you standing on the other side of the glass. You motioned for him to come outside. Seungmin couldn't get up fast enough as he rushed to you.

“Y/n, what are you doing here?” he questioned as he approached you.

“I’m not off limits anymore,” you tell him.

“Huh?” Seungmin felt his heart speed up with hope. Did he not have to repress his crush on you anymore?

“My brother is dating y/f/n, so I told him if I couldn’t date his friends then he and y/f/n have to break up. He gave me permission to date his friends. Our rule is over now,” you inform. Seungmin smiles the biggest, brightest smile.

“Come with me.” He takes your hand in his leading you to his car. He opens the car door for you and closes it behind you. Then he rushes around his car to the other side. As soon as he enters the car he’s reaching over to do up your seatbelt for you.

“Where are we going?” you asked when he began to drive.

“First, my apartment. Then it depends on you,” Seungmin smiled over at you.

The two of you reached his apartment fairly quickly. Seungmin rushes back to your side of the car to open the door for you. Even giving you his hand as you step out of the car. He doesn’t let your hand go either. He holds it all the way to his apartment. He only lets go once you both step inside.

“I’ll be right back,” he tells you, leaving you in his living room. He soon returns with a box of chocolates and a penguin plushie that had a heart in the middle of its chest.

“Will you be my valentine?” he asked you instead of his usual “Happy Valentine’s Day”.

“Yes.” You eagerly nodded. He hands the gifts over to you and wraps you in a hug afterwards.

“You have no idea how long I’ve liked you,” Seungmin confesses.

“How long?” you asked him.

“When we met for like ten seconds three years ago,” he reveals.

“Really?” You pulled away from the hug, but remained close to him. Seungmin nods.

“When I first saw you I was scared you might have been his partner, but then I saw the way he practically threw his bag at you. I figured that you were siblings and I was so glad when he confirmed that. However then he told me about how you were off limits. That you guys had a rule to not date each other’s friends. I tried to repress my feelings for you, but it didn’t really work,” Seungmin chuckles. “You know just about every time I talked to you your brother scolded me afterwards. Especially after Valentine’s Day last year. I’m pretty sure he knew that I liked you. I don’t know why he was so against it though,” Seungmin tells you. You grab his hand, lacing it with yours.

“That doesn’t matter anymore. We can like each other as much as we want now,” you said.

“Good, cause I like you a lot.” Seungmin brings your hand to his lips and presses a delicate kiss onto your knuckles.

“I like you a lot too.” You squeezed his hand lovingly.

Present

“Happy Valentine’s Day Beautiful.” Seungmin holds out a dozen roses and a box of chocolates. Your heart melts.

“Thank you,” you reached out for the flowers, leaning in to smell them and taking the chocolates too.

“Of course.” Seungmin takes your face in his hands and kisses your nose sweetly. “I got one more too,” he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small box from it.

“What’s this?” you questioned, setting the flowers and chocolates down.

“Open it.” Seungmin gestures to the box. You take the lid off to reveal a bracelet. It has a little heart shaped pendant hanging from it. Upon looking at it closer you see that it has yours and Seungmin’s initials engraved on it. You're at a loss for words. “Do you like it?”

“I love it, thank you.” You feel so touched by his gift you feel some tears wanting to prick your eyes.

“Let me put it on for you.” Seungmin takes the bracelet out of the box and carefully wraps it around your wrist, securing it. It’s now that you notice the necklace hanging from his neck that matches with your bracelet. You bring your hand up to it, gently taking the heart in between your fingers. Seungmin places his hand over yours.

“Are you ready for our date now?” He looks at you, eyes filled with love. You nodded looking back at him, eyes filled with just as much love.

Artist and musician Chris O'Doherty (also known as Reg Mombassa) was born in Auckland New Zealand in 1951 and migrated to Australia with his parents and brother in 1969. He attended the National Art School, Sydney 1969-70. He returned to art school in 1975 and obtained his diploma of painting. Reg formed rock band Mental as Anything in 1976 with four other art students; they have performed around the world and held group art exhibitions. Reg has exhibited paintings, drawings and prints at Watters Gallery Sydney since his first exhibition in 1975. He is also a graphic designer, working as a freelance artist and with Mambo Graphics. Reg performs with his brother Peter in the band Dog Trumpet.

Chris O'Doherty aka Reg Mombassa takes a more light-hearted approach to landscape that captures the spirit of the country. His landscapes with anthropomorphic objects, mixed mythological figures and archetypal landmarks form the hybrid of identities that inform Australia. The lone carcass of a burnt-out car in a burnt-out landscape is as much of our identity as is the barbecue worshipping suburban dweller, fighting off flies in Sydney. I'll being again.

You have probably heard the words "nuclear" reactor at least a couple of times. Many people fear them and don't understand. Some fear them because of that. In the principle nuclear reactors are actually incredibly simple on their own. It's basically a kettle with a turbine that heats using shiny rocks. To be specific about what happens in the process of "fission" (the process of atoms doing the absolutely mental). We fire a neuron, it hits a heavy atom like uranium 238 (238 indicates the number of protons inside the atom, this is important because different amounts of neutrons make different isotopes of the same element. And while some isotopes are stable, some are incredibly radioactive. This is needed to calculate the energy potential.) After the neutron gits the atom, it splits in to two atoms of a lighter elements. For example uranium 235 when split produces either barium and kripton, strontium and xenon or tin and molybdenum. Depending on how it splits. When the atom is split it releases other neutrons, Wich are moving very fast and carry an energy potential. It's also called the neutron temperature. Basically how much kinetic potential it has. Kinetic potential is basically temperature. As movment in atoms is heat. It in itself is important for splitting lighter elements or achieving higher efficiency. But I'll come back to that later.

So basically green rock Magic happens (it's actually emits blue light not green). And it heats a pot of watter Wich we make in to steam and then in to energy.

With the rock Magic done we come to the part of construction. Eich is my favorite as you see there is a lot of concrete metal and vey sturdy stuff in general.

Main concern for people that are afraid of nuclear reactors is another Chernobyl, Fukushima or three mile island.

Wich is a completely valid concern. However they are all human error. Fukushima was built on a shore... with tsunamis.

Chernobyl was managed by my ancestors, Wich they did incredibly porly and did experiments to the reactor that it was not Designed for.

Nuclear reactors altho do have uranium inside of them, just as nuclear bombs. Their are utterly and absolutely Incapable of exploding like one. It's just not as pure and condensed. And it's also not being exploded together. That's just not going to happen.

With today's technology in automatic control units, Materials and stuff, reactors are incredibly unlikely to fail. Unless humans do stupid human stuff. France for example is Europes largest nuclear powerhouse. And it's energy sources are basically carbon neutral. Also the concern of people that radiation will spread and radiate the area is very unfounded. I blame the Simpsons for that fear. Uranium is not a green glowy liquid. It's a metal ish metal, maybe greyish. And you can calmly hold it. It generaly doesn't contaminate watter. And not is it in direct contact with it. It's inside it's heat transfering case. The heat from the uranium case rods is transfers with either watter molten sodium or salt. (It sounds scary but each of them has their own benefits). There is a three loops design usually implemented. The first loop takes heat directly from the uranium. And transfers it via a heat exchanger (a radiator basically) to the second loop. The second loop uses the heated watter to spin the turbines. And then at the end cools it even more with the help of the third loop. The third loop is usually just taking water from a river and spraying it in the air after it took the heat. Those are the huge cooling towers you usually see. It's not smoke or radiation. It's just steam. So you can drink it without problem. Wich I proudly day I did. (it's almost like an iterator)(wait nuclear powered iterator) (a universe where the didn't discover void fluid energy) (holy shit I made something creative)

Nuclear power occupies a very important niech. It can produce A LOT of power on demand. Meaning if suddenly it's a holiday and everyone has decided it is time their ovens on. Renewables won't be able to compensate. As you see, if there is simply no wind or sun. There is nothing you can do. You can build batteries, but litium ion are very expensive and bad for the environment. And batteries that pump watter up so it later can spin generators falling down (usually called a gravity battery) are good and massive. But can't be everywhere.

Nuclear power plants can ramp up their energy production to cover that spike rapidly and efficiently. Making sure your country won't suddenly be low on energy ((KHEM KHEM GERMANY)) in the winter. Because uranium doesn't care for the weather.

Nod for the main part and the most interesting.

NUCLEAR WASTE

I shall repeat again. It's unfortunately not a dlurpee. And it doesn't leak.

Nuclear waste has 3 stages.

Fresh out of the reactor.

This kind needs to be actively cooled, because altho it has much of the useful uranium used up. There is still a little bit of wamrth. It needs to be cooled in a pond for a couple of months.

That's the cooling pond. It's about a years with I think. Fissile material is incredible energy dense. One kilogram of enriched uranium is enough to power uhhh. A lot of stuff for s long time. The voyager for example has been out there since uhh. A log time. And it's own small littler radio isotope nuclear generator is what keeps it warm and alive.

The second stage is splitting stuff that could be useful,such as enriched uranium. 238 neutrons. It can still be used. And recycled. Wich many do.

The third kind is the bad kind. The stuff thats radioactive enough to be dangerous but not useful. Right now it is stored underground in metal and concrete husks.

This is of course bad. As it accumulates there and isn't useful.

However, there is not that much nuclear waste. It's actually doesn't take up that much space. And in the end you're putting radioactive rocks back were you found them.

HOWEVER

here comes my favorite part.

THERE IS A WAY TO AVOID ALL OF THAT.

it's called fast neutron fission reactors. Those are experimental reactors right now. So there aren't any used actevly. But they posses a very useful trait. They feed using nuclear waste. And guess what it produces as a result ?

NUCLEAR FUEL.

This means it's an infinite energy glitch (not technically. Some of the matter is concerted to energy)

You put nuclear waste of normal reactors, in to fast neutron reactors ( also referd as breeder reactors or fast spectrum reactors) and get fuel back. And we'll 1 Gramm or so of trans uranics (the nasty nuclear waste) per ton. Wich tooooo be fair... it's just a Gramm, just pour it underground it'll be fine. Or keep it in a bottle as a lava lamp.

Altogether, nuclear reactors altho not as simple as burning coal or shining the sun at a panel. Are INCREDIBLY powerful. And are just misunderstood behemoths capable of boosting our civilization past the climate change. Many people fear them, but they shouldn't. They fear the complex, and refuse to learn about it.

Germany should really revisit it's nuclear policy.

Ah and by the way. Most biggest reason why we aren't building more faster is because they are expensive. However. Most of the cost comes from turbines and cooling stuff. The exact same as in coal power plants or gas powerplants. We can just put a kettle of cool rocks in there and get one free powerplant for relatively cheap and no CO2!!

Forgot to mention the control rods, it's just to stop neutrons when you don't need them. It's like graphite or similar. And its safer to be gravity droped so if there is suddenly no power they shutdown the reactor automatically.

Also one of the reasons Chernobyl went boom.

I'm usually not one to bemoan interest changes in the g3, but it annoys me how everyone got hobby related accessories in the new Creepover Party line while Clawdeen gets... generic pizza themed stuff?

It's the same thing in the core line. Deuce has his cooking apron, Lagoona got a sport watter bottle and a bathing suit, Toralei comes with a mic and some band merch, and Clawdeen has... the bland personality of a 2012 Disney Channel original movie protagonist if you had to guess

C'mon the earlier teasers hinted at some skateboarding skills and she's still a fashionista they could have been more creative designing her accessories

College!AU without thier abilitys. Also Oda is alive. Obviously thier mental health isn't as fucked up as in canon here.

Shibusawa studies fashion design and spends the most of his time designing and sewing new clothes for his boyfriends, for himself and for his major

Fyodor and Dazai frequently help Shibusawa out and model for him. Nobody knows how he convinced them to do it but apparently it worked

Chuuya secretly plays pocket love where he made himself and Dazai and choosed a dog as pet

Nikolai, Dazai and Ranpo are chaotic besties

Nikolai and Dazai both listen to "The Smiths " and always talk about the songs or do dramatic playback to them

Fyodor and Dazai have a weird hate friendship where they piss each other off the whole time or always try to get the higher scores than the other but as soon as one of them is obviously stuck in a depression hole again or as soon Fyodor passed out due to his anemia again, they seem really worried about the other one

Bram is a wheelchair user who can walk really short lengths since he got hit by a car while he crossed the street years ago

Sigma and Bram are best friends and always get super excited when they see each other in lectures

Dazai's and Chuuya's dorm is right next to the dorm of Nikolai, Fyodor, Sigma and Shibusawa and the walls aren't that thick so Dazai, Nikolai, Shibusawa and Fyodor casually annyoy each other by doing normal activities super loud, blast music or knock against the wall which separates thier dorms

Oda and Ango are both teachers but they know Dazai since he was 14 years old and they basically adopted him

Nikolai is a drama major and his boyfriends never missed a show or a theater rehearsal of him

Chuuya works part time at the local pet shop

A lot students and professors are scared of Fyodor and Nikolai for very obvious reasons

One time Nikolai fell and hurt his leg a lot on stage during a rehearsal and Fyodor shot up from his seat and run onto the stage so quickly that the others were worried that he would pass out any moment from the sudden quick movement

Fyodor's and Nikolai's dorm is usually a mess where the floor aswell as Fyodor's desk is completly covered with books, papers, clothes, kitchenware/dishes, playing cards, watter bottles and god knows what

Bram is, just like Lovecraft, always sleeping and in any location so one can find them sleeping in the most random places of the college. This happens very often

Sigma has no idea how he ended up with Fyodor, Nikolai and Shibusawa but he isn't complaining about it

Fyodor and Nikolai have both russian/ukrainian accents but Fyodor's is much thicker than Nikolai's. Sometimes one has to listen very closely to understand him

Bram has an irish accent

Sometimes Fyo forgets some words in japanese and awkwardly asks Nikolai what it means. Dazai makes fun of him bc of this.

Chuuya is the front singer of the college band which he founded with Akutagawa, Gin,Higuchi and Tachihara

Dazai falls even more in love with Chuuya (if this is even possible) everytime he sees him perform.

Dazai was the old tutor of Aku but he simply dropped him off. Now he is a much better tutor to Atushi, causing Aku to full on hate Atushi after they met

Everyone thought they would be having a mass hallucination after Atushi and Akutagawa made thier relationship public

Ranpo being the adopted son of Fukusawa the headmaster

Sigma is good friends with Atushi and they both try to calm each other's anxiety before exams but they end up panicking together

Poe is a rich exchange student from america who secretly keeps his racoon Karl in his and Ranpo's dorm

He even secretly carries Karl with him in his backpack

Jouno and Tecchou are both in the military but take side classes in the university

Nobody wants to mess with them

Yosano studies medicine and she is always scolding Dazai for his still pretty unhealthy way of living (He tries to get himself together for Chuuya and for Oda and Ango tho and they help him)

She also would scold Fyodor who has even unhealthier habits but even she is kinda scared of him

Fyodor takes afternoon classes, sleeps until late in the morning, stays up until ungodly hours, forgets to eat and drink enough frequently and basically lives in his chair on his desk, working his ass off and chewing his fingers bloody

Nikolai changes his part time jobs often. He already worked at a café, at a McDonald's, etc.

Fyodor doesn't go to work. He scams people on the internet and earns way more money than a normal student would have.

Sometimes he has to go to work tho so people won't get suspicious of him.

At the moment he is working at the local instrument-/music store and hates it bc of the costumers

Fitzgerald is an american professor who doesn't really teach anything and can't memorize the names of the japanese students for shit

After managing to get out of a really deep and horrible depression hole, Dazai decided to go to work in order to make the next step into getting his life together again. Now he works at the local coffee shop where Lucy works too and he rather enjoys it

Mushitaro is Ranpo's and Poe's constantly stressed roommate

Dazai, Chuuya, Yosano, Akutagawa, Gin, Higuchi, Koyo and Tachihara all went to the same high school which was lead by Mr. Mori Ougai before finally getting to this university

Dazai and Yosano both got horribly abused by Mori during thier time there. Chuuya was the one who called the police one day after finding out about the abuse, crashing the door to his office to stop him from abusing Dazai any further

Sigma and Mushitaro both bond over the fact that they both have a panic/anxiety disorder and OCD

Nikolai, Fyodor, Shibusawa and Sigma secretly keep three pet rats in thier dorm even though it's forbidden to keep pets in the dorms.

Elise, Yumeno, Kyouka, Aya and Karma go to the elementary school close to the university.

Elise and Yumeno frequently visit Dazai and Chuuya, Karma frequently visits Fyodor and his boyfriends and Aya frequently visits Bram. The older students have basically adopted the kids.

Sigma dreams of becoming a casino manager in his own casino one day and works really hard to archive this dream

He secretly works part time at a casino in the city. He gets along well with the manager so he is allowed to help out a little bit

Shibusawa once asked how "our casino manager" is doing after Sigma came home after his shift and Sigma nearly cried because of how happy this made him feel

Sigma hates Dazai after he danced with him against his will purely to annyoy him and kinda embarrassed him in front of others after he came newly to the college

Sigma now always threatens Dazai to hit him with whatever is laying or standing close to him if he says stupid stuff to tease him and ignores him most of the time

Fyodor and Dazai both suffer from frequent nightmares and night terrors so when they don't want to wake thier partners up for whatever reason, they often unintentionally meet each other in the 24h Café at night where they either sit quietly together and drink thier coffee, tea or hot chocolate or they just tiredly talk about how's it going, talk about chess and philosophy and gush a bit about thier boyfriends

Ivan hates Nikolai, Shibusawa and Sigma out of pure jealousy because they are together with Fyodor and Nikolai and Shibusawa hate him too

Sigma who came to the university a year after Shibusawa, Nikolai, Fyodor and Ivan didn't experience the whole drama with Ivan because of Fyodor so he was a bit confused at first about why this man hated him so much

Now he just makes him a bit uncomfy

Fyodor is just rather annyoyed but at least he has someone who he can send to buy groceries if they all can't go

Kunikida says that he hates Dazai but in truth he cares deeply about his somewhat friend and he is the only one besides Chuuya, Ango and Oda who had seen Dazai breaking down and being at his lowest

He is also the only one besides the redhead and Oda who is allowed to change his bandages if Dazai geniuly can't drag himself out of bed to do it himself

Kunikida is one of the best students (Dazai, Ranpo and Fyodor are the only ones who always have better scores and it drives him mad since they seem to do nothing to get these scores) and he is allowed to help out Fukusawa and other teachers

Students can often witness how Oda has to wrestle Ango out of his office in the late evening so he has a change of convincing Ango to get a at least a few hours of sleep

Poe works part time in the library of the university and knows the most students due to it. He doesn't really talks with them a lot because of his social anxiety but he observes them often or has to give them recommendations so he knows a bit about what they like and how they spend thier time.

Ranpo, Louisa, Lucy and Yosano visit him in the library often

He actually met Mushitaro and Ranpo through this job at the library

Dazai and Chuuya never appear in a lecture and still have (almost always in Chuuya's case) perfect grades

Fyodor does appear in the lectures but he always reads and isn't paying any attention

Ranpo just eats a whole bunch of snacks during lectures and corrects the professors every single time

Chuuya gets a dozen calls from his overprotective brother Verlaine who wants to know how he's doing and if everything is alright weekly

Im personally not a huge Taylor fan, but my heart is acheing for her as it is acheing for the fans. Im feeling bad after all the things that is happening in my homeland with something that should be special for Taylor and the Swifties here on Brasil, especially the hate comments from her so called "fans".

Now I can understand the frustation after the concert was post poned lasting 1h to start after literally TONS of fans were waiting outside the estagium on a termic sensation of 50°C.

I get that people were waiting for literal years to see her.

I know there are hundreds of fans whom cant stay on Rio for so long because they have work to do on monday and/or cant afford another passage or an hotel room, and wont be capable to be on the concert after spending 500-1000 reais on a ticket. Sometimes even more.

I understand the frustration. The anger. I understand the pain.

I am not going to say it is not fair, because it is.

But I gotta say, it is NOT Taylor's fault.

It is not Taylor Swift who decided there would be a massive heat wave on Brasil wich literally got on historical books as the hottest day on the state of Rio de Janeiro after around 1000 yrs.

It is not Taylor's fault that a girl passed away.

It is not Taylor's fault that 1000 fans on the crew fainted because of the heat.

And I am saying this because there are really people blaming her. And these things were not on her control.

If you want a closer note to understand how precary the situation was on the first day: the termic sensation inside the Estagium reached: 62°C, what is near of 140°f. And for real, I cant fully comprehend how unwell you can get on this situation. (On my city, I felt sick with a termic sensation of 42°c. To think there were people where the termic sensation was more 20°C makes me unwell to say the least.) People were screaming asking for water, because it is not free on stagiums and events. You cant get in with a watter bottle, and it is way too expensive to buy inside.

To get worse, the air circulation inside the stagium was closed on purpose. So the fans on the streets could not see Taylor inside.

The stagium was made, designed with the air circulation in mind. There was no refrigeration or air conditionin. They basically turned the stagium into a furnace, and wouldnt even give water for free(Ik it is a law, but in this heat, after closing the air circulation????? Are they for real????) and for what? Was it worthy it? To believe much of this could have been avoided if the ones organizing it had the Basic of human decency. Maybe there wouldnt have been 1000 people who fainted and 24 on the fucking hospital....

I cant.

This makes me tear up. Im writing this crying. This is unhamun.

I really wanna believe they didnt have an idea it would be that bad, I really wanna believe they didnt think for a moment: this doesnt feel right.

That it was a somatory of bad decisions viewing only the gain that blinded people to see the basic.

But I am being optimisc, because there is no way such a huge company as it is the Tickets For Fun, there wasnt anyone on the logistics pointing out that closing the air circulation was a bad idea, that there werent anyone on the Commercial thinking even for once that selling a cup of water on such a high price on this heat wave is precary.

I just cant withstand it.

I will give here info: the majority of people on Brasil dont make more than RS2000,00 per month, converting it to dollar it is around U$420,00 per month if I am not mistaken, and the watter cup with 200ml was around R$10,00, what makes U$2,00 per cup. There were people wasting R$100,00 to R$200,00 wich converting is like U$20,00 to U$30,00 only with water in ONE DAY.

Of course, this literally screams that the majority of the crew on Rio is not on this line, but even for people who makes like R$5000,00 to 7.000,00 per month wich is U$1000,00 to U$,1500,00 is too expensive.

And you go with the with lodging, the airplane tickets that alone you spend more than R$1000,00 easily. I am not counting food, drinks, or anything.

People get in debt to see her. That is serious business.

And it makes me sick of my stomach people cant go to a concert because they cannot afford water.

Now, about yesteday's show

Taylor wanted to postpon it since she knew a girl literally died due the hot wave on Rio, while this said fan was waiting to see her performance.

But as it seems, the company Tickets For Fun(@t4f), didnt want her to do it. What I believe it happend was long hours of discussion between Taylor team and the @T4f that is why it was cancelled so late.

People believes that Taylor can postpon an International show by just saying 'im Taylor fucking Swift, I can do wathever I want" that she did it on purpose, to let her fans waiting on an infernal heat, that Taylor dont care with her fans and the fact is. She cant postpon an International show out of the blank when she signed a contract! It was terrible the fans waiting for HOURS, but there was nothing she could do.

I've seen terrible comments about her on tiktok, on Twitter. I've read terrible things people say about the fans, as it was a good thing that her fan died, as example.

And for me, ok? After someone died, 1000 fainted, there really shouldnt be more concert. I agree that it should have been earlier, unhapilly it wasnt cause of burocracy.

Everything I see, read I feel bad, terribly sad, and depressed.

Just to put it here.

It is not Taylor's fault anything that is happening on this tour. Hopefully, the rest of her staying here will be better.

The one to blame is The Tickets For Fun.

I really hope everyone there to be safe and sound. That is it.

Comics this week?

Action Comics #1057 - If this is the last arc for both the way I suspect I'm going to miss Sandoval just as much as PKJ. Like Sampere and Federeci he's an artist who could be a generational Superman creator but may be getting snatched away too soon. This issue is mainly just an interview between Clark and Norah, and in the hands of a lesser artist it would just be boring talking heads. Sandoval's portrayal of Clark using his powers to detect whether Norah is lying during the interview keeps the tension high, loved how he depicted Clark's x-ray vision and superhearing. Pretty obvious that Norah is an infiltrator sent by the Empire of Shadows (the evil Dark Multiverse Batfamily from the Batman/Superman & the Authority one shot that PKJ did). If this is the ending arc for PKJ, the Superfamily vs. the Evil Batfamily is a great idea for an ending.

Flash #1 - Good first issue, sets up an interesting Speed Force plot even though I've felt worn out on the Speed Force. Been out of the loop with Flash for a while and this did a good job of getting me up to speed (heh). Dedato art isn't a great fit with a speedster - conveying motion is something he's bad at - but it does suit the grim tone. Spurrier is a writer who loves to pack his issues with as much words as he can, which has the upside of making the issue take longer to read. Seems the comic industry is switching back to compression after two decades plus with everyone trying to ape the Bendis decompressed style. It's a welcome change because if you're going to charge me $5 an issue, it damn well better take me longer than 5 minutes to read.

Detective Comics #1074 - Probably my favorite issue of the run thus far, Nguyen is a treasure. Watters needs his own Ten-Eyed Man mini.

The Penguin #2 - The lesser King work with WW on the stands but still good!

Unstoppable Doom Patrol #6 - Burnham draws the hell out of the fight scenes and it was great to see old Morrison characters like Quiz. Kinda the perfect counter to Jane having every superpower ever just doled out to different identities.

Blade #3 - Slows down a bit but the Adana is such a cool bad guy and I'm loving the buildup to Blade's fight. Plus Blade keeps being the coolest motherfucker in the MU.

Immortal Thor #2 - Not feeling the new Loki design and Ewing is struggling with writing fight scenes as always, but man is that art gorgeous otherwise. Thought bubbles are such a perfect choice here because they are the equivalent of Shakespearean English for comics in terms of conveying "this is old school storytelling". Compliments Ewing trying to write a Thor run in the vein of the actual myths.

Avengers #5 - At this point it's a solid run, but not as great as his Strange book. Need to cut back so I'm dropping this.

Ultimate Invasion #4 - Oh boy do I have thoughts! So many I need to bullet point them!

Hickman has flipped the plot from Ultimates 2. Here the 6160 Ultimates are positioned like the 1610 Liberators in that they are going to be fighting to destroy the status quo, with Capitan America presumably leading the charge. Or maybe it will be Black Panther as the leader since he presumably will be housing the Ultimates in the one place not under the Illuminati's control: Wakanda.

Nothing gets erased via time travel which surprised me. For better or worse, this is what the new Ultimate Universe will be. No traditional take on Ultimate Fantastic Four ever since Ben, Sue, and Johnny are all dead and Reed is a good version of Doom. Reed will be on the Ultimates because Hickman can't leave his boy on the sidelines for long. Clearly Hickman will be writing Ultimates since I can't imagine anyone else wanting to write that kind of lineup with this weird a status quo. What the hell an Ultimate X-Men book is going to look like is anyone's guess.

Hickman has three big plotlines seeded here: The Illuminati carving up America and the Ultimates fighting back. The Maker, Kang, and Howard all trapped in the City which is sealed now but will open again one day. Tony Stark is "Iron Lad" which is meant to make us believe he is also Ultimate Kang, whether that's a red herring or a destiny Tony must face one day remains to be seen.

Other big plot thread is that one day the 616 Illuminati are going to make their way to 6160, likely with the help of Miles and that card Maker gave him.

No tease for Spider-Man, maybe that will come with the Ultimate Universe one shot. Either it's going to be Peter Parker because Marvel demands at least one relatively "normal" book to serve as anchor for all this weirdness, or it will be someone entirely new. Saw someone suggest Harry Osborn and fuck that actually could work! I don't think that's ever been done either. My guess is that USM will be a book about either Peter or Harry having been groomed to join the technocrats in ruling the world, but they end up rebelling against that. Most of Spidey's traditional foes are either mad scientists (Norman and Otto would easily fit into this as sub-bosses under Howard who are pissed because the Illuminati stripped them of their old privileges) or science experiments lashing out (Lizard for example).

I see what Hickman is going for here. In our world the techbros wield power equivalent to heads of state, Hickman just flat out made them the actual heads.

It's an interesting setup, but it's weird. I dunno if Marvel fans will get on board with this, it's so utterly at odds with well, everything. It's not 616, it's not the MCU, and it's not 1610. Everything here is taking full advantage of being an alternate universe, and I don't know how Marvel fans will react to that. Another problem is this Ultimate Universe already carries a lot of baggage. Don't know who the Maker is? You're going to be utterly lost with what the hell is going on. Original Ultimate Universe lasted as long as it did because it was easy to get into for newcomers and featured streamlined reimagining of the classic characters for oldheads. Hickman said his new UU would be an inversion of that and he didn't lie.

I'm concerned that approach is going to make this new Ultimate Universe short lived. Say you're one of the countless people who will presumably jump in on Hickman writing Spidey without having read all this beforehand. If Spider-Man is as changed as Iron Man or Reed are, that's going to be a turn off for people because they'll reject how different he is from what they expect.

　ぺるけさんはこのPart3を完成させた後、Part4でドライバ段を準差動化し、Part5で差動化しているのだが、大きな流れで見るとこのPart3でmini watterとしての基本が固まりつつあるように思える。

　今、静かに本機で音楽を楽しんでいる。数値的には低域においてクロストーク特性が良いとは言えないのだが、『素直な音』『豊かな音』『大人の音』である。シナトラの歌声が心地よい。数値には表れてこない音楽のいきいきとした躍動が感じられる。しばらくはメインアンプとして味わおうと思う。(2023/09/02)

Comics Read 06/14- 25/2023

Over this period of time I read the first two collected volumes of Lumberjanes, “Beware the Kitten Holy” and “Friendship to the Max”. These written by ND Stevenson and Grace Ellis, the art is by Gus Allen, colors by Maarta Laiho and letters by Aubrey Aiese. Shannon Watters is also credited as a creator.

This is an example of series that I know I am supposed to love, but I don’t really like. I read the first four or five issues as floppies as they came out back in 2014. I did not love them and wondered why. Was I just too old for this all ages comic? Did having to wait a month between issues take from my enjoyment because I did not feel things cumulatively? I gave the first issue away to a kid I was baby sitting to see if it was an age thing. She declared it “too scary” and lost the physical issue. I sold the rest in my eBay store and decided to trade wait to see if it was more enjoyable without the monthly issues. While I did buy these two volumes, part of me thought this was silly and didn’t continue and then waited almost a decade to actually read them. I should just accept that there are some popular things that I don’t like.

Now that I am even older, I am better at admitting that. Between then and now ND Stevenson’s other Nimona, and I think some of the things that rub me the wrong way about Lumberjanes were also present there. The characters act like they are fans of the series in which they are staring. They get excited about upcoming plot points like they would for reading or watching something, not as something they are going to live through. Part of why I find this off putting is they get excited like this so early that I have not gotten to a point where I care enough to be excited.

The format of each issues is to start with a page of the Lumberjanes Handbook. This handbook page ends mid sentence and then the story begins in media res, though not necessarily picking up where a cliff hanger left off. The final page of the issue also has a page of the handbooks this time with photos of the campers. The floppy versions included playlists created by the characters, but that did not get included with my trade paperbacks.

The plot of these volumes involves campers, their counselor who they always frustrate, and something supernatural going on in the woods. When the cause of these magical events is finally explained it felt like an excuse for action without plot. It must be fun for someone else.

Allen’s art style is very like Stevenson’s. It is purposefully simple and child like. The colors are vivid and include a pretty wide palette for mostly flat colors. (That’s not a criticism, building depth through color would have been wrong for this kind of art.) The character designs are distinct enough to that various artist did impressive cover variants collected in the back that are all in their own distinct styles. But for the most part I didn’t feel like the characters were stood out as individuals. They are broadly drawn, but we learn so little of them in these volumes. Maybe this is a result of the issue structure? Also there is a reoccurring bit about Jen, the counsellor and only Black character in the book, being incorrectly named by Rosie the head of the camp. This is like the joke on Fringe about Walter never calling Astrid by her correct name, that the actress Jasika Nicole later admitted made her feel awful as a minority. It seems like it comes to a stop a the end of the second volume. And I hope it did, because it’s not fun to read.
