Please do yourself a favor and go read the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers, it is such amazing queer science fiction that explores themes of family, belonging, and Identity

A quick Wayfarers sketch after work - Dr Chef is a real favourite of mine so I want to do a proper full body design for him as soon as I can figure out how to draw his weird otter-gecko-caterpillar body

To have our intro to Sawyer feeling he was an outsider hearing the Exodan Litany for the Dead, yet feeling it would be a nice thing to be part of...then to be very much part of it...with Exodans...naming his homesteader...fuck

Rereading The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers and felt the need to draw these funky aliens that I've fallen in love with. So far I have this doodle of Speaker from when she was putting on music for the rest of them <3

"There is peace out here in the open. I have friends and a garden in the stars and a kitchen full of tasty things. I heal people now. I cannot pretend that the war never happened, but I stopped fighting it long ago. I did not start the war. It should never have been mine to fight."

okay… does anyone else find the sheer absence of disabled people in the wayfarer series kind of strange? that no one except for anti-technology gaiists experiences body differences? it’s gotten to the point where it’s just weird to me that aeluon characters acting like no sapients other than them can be deaf, or that they get talkboxes implanted in them to communicate with others even though (watsonian) signed languages exist in the modern day and (doylist) there are languages in universe that use gesture in combination with sound for communication

Hi!
I'm looking for any media with a sort of socialist science fictiom theme?? Think Becky Chamber's the Wayfarer series, Star Trek, or the movie Space Sweepers! If anything springs to mind, pls recommend! I'm gnawing at the bit for more things that make me believe for a split second that things are going to be okay and maybe even space exploration in my life time 😌

71, 50, 48 for the book rec ask!!
And feel free to ramble about any other books
48. “Your favourite sci-fi novel”
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy omg BOOK OF ALL TIME makes me laugh so so much but also makes stop and think about society and humanity at times. Also Arthur and Ford are best best friends that are gay for each other (honestly their friendship and love for each other is the backbone for this series it’s so beautiful aaaaa) and Ford gives me gender envy >:P
(Honourable mention to the Wayfarer series ofc for being so inventive and cool and well thought out and makes you think and fun found family vibes throughout)
50. “A book that made you cry a LOT”
Loveless by Alice Oseman because OUGH it hits very close to home and the way Georgia’s whole story is told and how asexuality and aromanticism and the whole lgbtq+ community is represented is so so beautiful.
71. “Your favourite LGBTQ+ fiction”
Loveless ofc, I’ll also say The Gravity of Us because MAN IT’S JUST SO FUN! Very satisfying plot of going against the brands and companies and instead showing the *humans* behind the work (at NASA!) and defeating the companies through the power of Scientists Getting To Rant On Video and also Gay Love!
Other honourable mentions!!!!!!!
Once Upon A Con series! OMG I LOVE THESE SO SO MUCH. The queer rep! The shenanigans! The billions of sci-fi references! The fic-like plots! The chaos of cons! They’re such a heartwarming homage to fandom and the community that comes with it
Daisy on the Outer Line. Ok. So. This is written in Strong Glaswegian Accent, so if you don’t think you could understand that,,, maybe don’t read this skfjksjf,,, it’s so incredibly good tho. There is subtle queer rep (asexual and… bi? If I remember correctly?) and it’s such a gorgeous reflection of Life and how tough it can be, but to see the good things despite the hardship. Left me feeling warm and cosy but also made me cry a bit and laugh a lot.

My special interest(s) is hiding from me y’all!
I have a 3 major collections of stuff that mostly don’t overlap, they’re a plushie collection, a rock collection (but my ma made me get rid of 2 whole boxes a while back) ‘n a dinosaur collection (plushies, plastic dinosaurs, dinosaur books, etc). I don’t have much interest in geology or the specifics of palaeontology or anythin. I like colourful shows most people would say are for kids, shows like gravity falls, amphibia ‘n star vs the forces of evil, but again no special interest there. I just wrote the above and realised I really like hard sci-fi, I will talk about hard sci-fi books, shows ‘n movies at any given chance, fuck I think I found my ducking special interest. I’ve read a lot of books by Isaac Asimov, I’ve watched as much Star Trek as I can get my hands on, I’m reading the Wayfarer series, I love speculative biology projects… OH FUCK Y’ALL I FOUND THE FUCKING INTEREST, HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN FLYIN UNDER THE RADAR FOR ME, HOW LONG??? I’m gonna go to sleep and think on this

Leitura 9 de 2023
Tumblr media

22.12.22 ~ this past year (starting in march) i read 21 books - i'm pretty proud of that considering i read only one last year :')
my goal for this coming year is 24 books (so i'll be adding to the above list), which i think is doable - i'd put the number higher, although i have my year abroad for starting in late september/october. books in spain are pretty expensive compared to the uk so i'm gonna be limited there, plus i'll have limited space/weight allowance for travelling. i'll have my kindle though, so hopefully, that'll help the numbers !!!
