once again. action movies are not the enemy of horror. the academy hates them BOTH even though both, probably more than any other genres, tend to actually push the boundaries of what you can do with a camera, what you can put in a movie. the last action movie to receive a best picture nomination was mad max: fury road seven (7) years ago. an action movie had to be credited with saving movie theaters before the academy would nominate another one. top gun maverick literally invented a new camera, put six of them in a cockpit, and pioneered new aerial filming techniques that had never even been attempted before. action is not the enemy of horror. turn your ire towards biopics, dramas that may or may not actually exist, and whatever self satisfied shit ruben östlund insists on cooking up.

#i’ll never love anything the way the academy loves a middling to bad biopic #also i didn’t get into this in the actual post but it’s a miracle top gun was nominated because the academy doesn’t like tom cruise #and he doesn’t like them back. #bc he decided to have fun while he still could instead of killing himself emotionally after being snubbed one time too many #during the weinstein years before they changed the rules on how you could campaign for oscars #and they know he doesn’t need them to be successful critically or financially and they do not like that. they want to be needed. #anyway shout out to him for refusing to campaign for any awards

i’m torn between indian and pakistani mainstream media bc i feel like the former tends towards wanting to be progressive as a whole but often makes haphazard attempts in the process that certainly have their heart in the right place but are still not doing quite enough and then the latter is like 90% straight women hating shite from the gutter but the leftover 10% that is actually worth something is some of the most phenomenal stuff you have ever seen and near close to perfect. but it’s only 10% and you have to wait and wade through so much of the shite to even get to it

#and i feel like both countries’ technological devt really reflects this in the sense that #when you compare most women’s station in india to most women’s station in pakistan it’s a very stark difference #like rocky aur rani is completely abnormal to even posit in pakistani media #but as a result of that rarity and the even more extensive degree of women’s oppression in pakistan #i feel like that sort of allows for more like. conscious critiques of patriarchy etc #which you don’t get as strongly in mainstream bwood bc financial elevation is such a huge mark of success and security already #that there’s not much care to interrogate beyond that even though it’s necessary #but disclaimer obv that these are still generalizations just based on what i feel like i’ve observed #and is in no way a reflection of more niche media from both countries that likely is way more self conscious and progressive #to be deleted

15. Angst or fluff?

Ooo, as a writer or a reader, haha? I do like writing and reading both, but angst generally wins out. I like conflict in stories because I think conflict makes stories generally more revealing and compelling, and the payoff more satisfying, and it can be harder to make that work with fluff. Not that I don't try myself - I'd say half of C&C is fluff with conflict really, which was a fun balance to figure out as a writer, but overall, angst just scratches an itch for me in a way a lot of fluff doesn't.

Wait, I'm confused - how would they qualify a spot for Ireland at Worlds? I don't quite know how that works for a country that hasn't had a spot in a while (or ever)? Is it their international ranking or scores that would put them in the mix? ty

Ireland is a member of the ISU, and as such has the right to enter a competitor who has reached the technical minimums. Aka, it doesn’t matter that they have entered one before, they have a spot they can use as long as they are able to and follow the rules.

It’s on S/F to achieve the minimum tech if they haven’t already (if they haven’t then they would need to be sent to a qualifying event to try), to be allowed to compete at Worlds. But with no competition in Ireland, the spot is theirs, assuming no complications*.

*and assuming that Shane (or Carolane) has citizenship, and it’s kind of a given that one of them must or else this would be all a moot point

#ask #SC doesn’t have a history of being petty and not releasing athletes who want to skate elsewhere #and while I suppose they could try to hold them off due to financial reasons #(SF have had funding and international competitions) #it’s not like SC has to worry excessively about SF’s success being in the way of Canadian skaters and therefore #have an extra reason to be tough on them #or as though they need/want something from Ireland in return #(sorry S/F but it’s true)
