Chapter 10: Ever Closer

Butterflies swarmed in her stomach as she ambled around and realised she was running out of things to do. Time was passing as quick as a shoddily-made candle melted, and she wished it would stop. Any moment now, it would rain. Any moment, she would be called to her Joining, whatever that would entail. Any moment, the darkspawn could attack. Somewhere along the way to Ostagar, Kallian had lost track of the days, but she knew it was mid-August, and that Soris’s birthday was soon. Would she even still be alive when it came?

Her breath was coming fast again, and there was an uncomfortable feeling in her hands, as though the butterflies had migrated there. She clenched them into fists intermittently, but it didn’t help. It was too loud. There were too many people, too many noises competing. She shook her hands by her side, not wanting to catch anyone’s eye but needing to expel whatever the fuck had been building in her. Kallian squeezed her eyes shut.
