Having dropped Dangerous Romance, I am now down to three shows. As our intrepid BL adventurer, what would you recommend I watch?

Airing or Recently Finished

Of the things currently airing, I would recommend the following.

My Personal Weatherman (Gaga, Viki)

This show has been a fascinating examination of a new-ish relationship with some heavy kink overtones. This show is not so much about the chase, and so much more about how these two could actually function long-term. I've enjoyed reading @lutawolf kink talk about this one, and the leads have some of the best sexual chemistry we've seen from Japan.

If It's With You (Gaga)

We have a sexually active and assured gay protagonist who knows who he is and what he wants. He's also a menace with some sort of trauma. I am absolutely obsessed with him. This show is going to be very short at 5 episodes, so it may be one you don't want to miss out on. Truly, this has felt like nothing else we've had in a long time and I've been thinking about it for days.

Love in Translation (iQIYI)

This just finished and is an absolute delight. This is one of the better executions of a workplace romance we've seen this year, and was the show anchoring me with all the heavy shows and silly shows airing at once. This show had so much heart to it. It had some wobbles towards the end, but the kindness underpinning this show makes it one of my favorites of the year.

Past Shows

Because you're still doing the homework, here are some shows I know you missed.

Make It Right (Grey)

You should still finish this. I still believe this is one of the most important foundational works for what made Thai BL start to feel more queer. This show asked big questions about male sexual maturation and I don't think any of the Thai high school shows have gone there since.

We Best Love (WeTV)

You probably haven't watched much from Taiwan, but this is one of the best examples of why we remain committed to them. Sam Lin and Yu have hands down the top three best paired chemistry in BL.

Rainbow Prince (YouTube)

This camp masterpiece from last year is one of my favorite shows. It is a hot mess, but the songs are fun and the plot is ridiculous.

We Best Love: No. 1 & 2 for Color

Zhou Shu Yi and Gao Shi De are colored-coded boys in love.

Zhou Shu Yi is a Black Brooder (protective, sophisticated, mysterious, and arrogant) and Gao Shi De is a Blue Boy (loyal, sincere, stable, and passive). *look at the big barrier between them!* Gao Shi De actually describes Zhou Shu Yi's color and personality when they are stuck in the medical office together, and he is revealing the personality of the guy he likes.

They are very good at sticking to their color

It's because they have been doing this since they were children

However, at some point, their friendship turned sour due to its competitive nature. It's one-sided, and Zhou Shu Yi begins to hate Gao Shi De since he always loses to him. However, because of this, Blue Boy Gao Shi De is always present in Zhou Shu Yi's life.

When Gao Shi De rescues Zhou Shu Yi from the pool and gives him the kiss of life, Zhou Shu Yi panics, and is, once again, surrounded by blue.

Gao Shi De notifies Zhou Shu Yi that he is indebted to Gao Shi De or else Gao Shi De will reveal to Zhou Shu Yi's friends the reason he jumped into the pool in the first place. Zhou Shu Yi is less than thrilled, but...

The blue quickly begins to appear on Zhou Shi Yi as a dark blue

And starts to lighten as they continue to hang out.

The day he falls asleep on Gao Shi De, the blue is the brightest. Zhou Shu Yo is falling slowly in love with Gao Shi De without even noticing.

When they go to the arcade, Gao Shi De is wearing green because he is confused about his relationship with Zhou Shu Yo and thinks it's a date. He will wear green again when he finally confesses to Zhou Shu Yo after Zhou Shu Yo avoids him. Also notable, everything Zhou Shu Yo has at the arcade is blue - the balloons he must pop, the color of the wheel he must throw objects in, the color of the backdrop for his water glasses, and the basket he has to get objects at of are all blue. He loses every single game.

When they are asked to go to the haunted house, they are wearing the same outfits they had on when this arrangement began, and Zhou Shu Yo believes their arrangement will end there since he thinks he will finally beat Gao Shi De. They are full circle outfits.

However, once they are in the haunted house/escape room, Zhou Shu Yo becomes scared and realizes he needs Gao Shi De. Gao Shi De intentionally locks them in the medical room without Zhou Shu Yo knowing.

And they share a beautiful night together surrounded by reds and pinks (aka love). This is also when Gao Shi De confesses to liking Zhou Shu Yo (during their discussion and when he believes he is sleeping).

Because Zhou Shu Yo actually did hear Gao Shi De's confession, he begins to avoid him. He tries to find a girlfriend and runs away from Zhou Shu Yo, until he can't. While hallucinating about Gao Shi De, a date injures Zhou Shu Yo foot, but he tries to run away from Gao Shi De, which results in him spraining his ankle. Gao Shi De takes him to the medical office, aka to the scene of the love confession.

Once again, surrounded by love, and in his "I'm overwhelmed with emotion" green, Gao Shi De lowers himself for Zhou Shu Yo before standing up and directly tells Zhou Shu Yo "Yes I like you, but that’s none of your business" after Zhou Shu Yo tells him he can't see himself with a man. Gao Shi De leaves, but Zhou Shu Yo realizes his mistake and is engulfed in Gao Shi De's blue while he looks for him around every corner.

They finally figure it out and confess on the bridge. After they start wearing couple's bracelets that carry into the second season.

They are overwhelmed with emotions in their greens (Zhou Shu Yo wore this green shirt when he jumped into the pool).

The boys also find out that their best friends are in love with each other. Shi Zhe Yu and Liu Bing Wei are so in love, that they will continue to coordinate their outfits for the rest of their relationship. AbsoluteBL did a quick write-up of how Liu Bing Wei's ties always match Shi Zhe Yu's suits.

Time for a small break between season one and two to enjoy the queerness of this show with its inclusion of rainbows and hearts:

When we catch up with the boys guys in the second season, it's been five years, and Gao Shi De is still a Blue Boy who has been living in a blue house with a blue car.

While Zhou Shu Yo is even more of a Black Brooder in his black house and black car because he HASN'T SEEN HIS BLUE BOY FOR FIVE YEARS!

But the day after he struts himself back into his Blue Boy's life and smacks the shit out of him in front of the entire office, Zhou Shu Yo sports a blue tie while Gao Shi De opts for a black suit. *They're in love!*

Much like before, Zhou Shu Yo's incorporates Gao Shi De's blue subtly. So subtle, in fact, that it's difficult to see that his shirt has a dark blue design on it.

He doesn't want Gao Shi De to know that he has missed him for the past five years, but everything in Zhou Shu Yo's life delicately admits that Zhou Shu Yo has always thought about his Blue Boy and still loves him because the only pop of color in Zhou Shu Yo's house and life is blue.

Their tension explodes the day a blue stripe appears across Zhou Shu Yo's chest. His love is figuratively on his chest but hidden under his black color.

And the next morning, all of Gao Shi De's secrets are laid bare while he lays in the bare wrapped only in the blue Zhou Shu Yo has given back to him.

With great hesitation, Zhou Shu Yo decides to give Gao Shi De one last chance after speaking to him in the blue bed while Gao Shi De wears a neutral brown. This is similar to the confession scene in the first season in the medical office, but this time, both boys are in the light meaning they're both aware and honest.

Zhou Shu Yo fully commits himself to his Blue Boy, and his friend get on board, even though they were hesitant because they had been present for Zhou Shu Yo's heartbreak over the past five years and helped him piece back together his life without Gao Shi De.

Zhou Shu Yo's dad, who is a Red Rascal and was the biggest obstacle before, plays hardball with the boys, but because of his previous major screw up, he is no place for negotiation, and aligns himself with our Blue Boy for the sake of his son's happiness.

All ends well for the men with Zhou Shu Yo and Gao Shi De in their colors already looking like future best men to Shi Zhe Yu and Liu Bing Wei in their coordinating outfits that resemble the ones they ended the first season with while Yu Zhen Xuan and Pei Shou Yi appear as stand-in officiates.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Well, except me because WE WERE TOLD THERE WOULD BE ANOTHER SEASON YET WE HAVEN'T GOTTEN IT!

what are your top ten fav bl's of all time?

Hey Anon! I had to take some time to think about this. It's hard for me to choose things like this! You're really putting me on the spot lol. Here we go tho...I might cheat a little.

To My Star. Both 1 and 2. I love Seo Joon's and Ji Woo's story. I love their relationship dynamic. I loved how protective they were of each other. Both Ji Woo and Seo Joon are complex characters with layers that you can really bite into and analyze many ways. I know a lot of people were not fans of s2 but that was one series where I truly ate up the angst. Ji Woo is a hard character to understand unless you really take the time to watch the series and focus on his behaviors. You'll never, ever catch me talking bad about TMS.

Gameboys the Series. Both the seasons and the movie. CaiReel have such a modern and relatable love story. I think it being a series about finding relationships in the middle of a global pandemic while we were ALL sharing the same plight really stood out. I felt like I made new friends while watching that series. Also for s1 to be shot completely on an iPhone and for most of the actors to not actually be filming their scenes at the same time, I was BLOWN away by the quality AND chemistry. That series made me SOB and that is also something I consider impressive. If it can make me cry then it's certified gold.

Utsukushii Kare. Both seasons and the movie. This is another series with complex main characters. Hira deals with his general uninterest in damn near everything EXCEPT Kiyoi and photography. And Kiyoi deals with his need for attention even if he generally doesn't like people because they always disappoint him. It's interesting to see how they handle their seemingly unbalanced relationship. Hira is willing to give Kiyoi all the love he requires and not get close (which is normally what Kiyoi wants) and Kiyoi learns that with Hira he wants a real true love and relationship and that's quite a task when the man you love doesn't value himself. It's just interesting seeing the growth between them.

Color Rush S1. I love the way they tackle the soulmates trope, and explore the darker side to the obsession that could happen once you find your perfect match ESPECIALLY when that match can help you see a full picture. Yeon Woo struggles with a myriad of thoughts and fears as he does his best not to get close to Yoo Han even though Yoo Han is serving up himself on a silver platter with tantalizing promises of helping him learn the colors he craves to see. Yeon Woo becomes obsessed, but little does he know that Yoo Han is also obsessed because Yeon Woo also helps Yoo Han see a clearer picture. But maybe that obsession is really just them falling in love and not knowing what to call it.

Moonlight Chicken. Messy and relatable to a person like me who is smack dab in the middle of the age groups involved. This series really showcases how messy romances can be. It shows how hard it can be to close the door to a chapter you thought would end happily. This series shows how hard it can be to move on when a normally open door shuts in your face suddenly and forever. It shows how a chapter that starts off terrible can lead you into the most thrilling moment of your life. It shows that the last chapter you finished might have you TERRIFIED to move on to the next one. Stuck. This was a series I found difficult to dislike any of the characters even if they were being terrible. Emotions were high and reactions were warranted. This was a series where I felt like people were allowed to feel the way they were feeling.

We Best Love. Yes, both seasons. Shu Yi and Shi De had such an up and down ship. Shi De went through such a roundabout way to get close to Shu Yi and I really enjoyed watching them become friends. I enjoyed watching Shu Yi come to realize he was in love. I wanted to beat Shi De up in s2 for ghosting Shu Yi and I was enjoying watching Shu Yi get his lick back, but really he was just looking for answers so he can decide if he was stupid for wanting to forgive Shi De the moment he saw him again. It's another fun and messy series.

Lovely Writer. I LOVE Gene ok. He really made me love the series because he was such a bomb ass character. I also found Nubsib's psycho/stalkerish tendencies quite entertaining because he was so polite about it. I love that the series took stabs at all the things wrong with the BL community while simultaneously having the main character be an actor in one of the most toxic fake BLs I've ever seen. Just meta on top of meta. Satire in the form of a trendy BL within a BL.

History 3: MODC. Salt run aside, I just really loved this series. Can't believe a series about the shy kid falling in love with his bully is a fave. That sentence alone would make it problematic af...not to mention the questionable age gap between the 2nd couple. But it was beautifully constructed. Hao Ting found the best version of himself in Xi Gu and Xi Gu found a brighter side to life with Hao Ting. And they were WAYYYYY into each other and Hao Ting did put in his work to be forgiven. I do my best not to overthink Zhi Gang's age difference from Sun Bo because it's such a norm in Taiwanese BL. It's kind of interesting to see their relationship play out. Zhi Gang definitely has his hangups with the age gap and Sun Bo just doesn't care.

Blueming. Such a laid back series. Si Won is just a sweetheart dealing with self-esteem issues trying to make his presence known in life so he can get the best out of his university experience. And Da Un is just that effortlessly cool guy Si Won strives to be like. He can't even fathom the idea of such a cool guy having a crush on him that he takes the flirting as arrogance lmao. I think it's sweet that Da Un helps uplift Si Won and I think it's sweet that Si On showed Da Un the attention he never got at home.

Ingredients the Series. Just a sweet lil slice of life miniseries. It fills me with joy to watch Tops and Win pine after each other as Win works on his music and Tops works on his cooking and they live together symbiotically. There's not too much to this series. It relies heavily on food and chemistry and that's perfectly perfect for me.

BUT I need help, as I thought I understood and a recent drama I’m watching I am a little lost. It’s called “No.1 for you” and we have an obvious Blue boy (loved other boy for years) and he is always in a light blue. and other boy I only see in Black so far. Zhou Shu Yi is still wearing his signature black (and white to some extent). Ever since he made his arrangement with Gao Shi De, Zhou Shu Yi has been wearing blue...a lot because he is developing feelings for Gao Shi De. He believed that if he beat Gao Shi De in the haunted house/maze thing, he would finally be free of their arrangement and these feelings. He is trying to step out of the blue and redirect his feelings (orange), but by the end of the night, he ends up even closer to Gao Shi De and his true feelings.

So, he does what any Black Brooder does; he freaks the fuck out.

If I had a nickel etc...

for Lin Zi Hong (Sam Lin) being involved in underwater pool drowning scene "first kiss" where one love interest saves the other through their breath. (Expired Air Resuscitation - I had to search "kiss to give oxygen" to find the official name for it.)

It is kinda weird that it happened twice. Unless this is a common trope in Taiwanese dramas? I haven't seen that many.

(I've seen the first third of Emily's Five Things aka Five Missions, and I rather like it so far, with some caveats. I like the dynamic between the two mains, and Lin Zi Hong and the lead actress are both charming.)
