Jeremiah 30:1-31:26, 1 Timothy 2:1-15, Psalms 87:1-7, Proverbs 25:18-19
Today is the 17th day of October. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It’s great, of course, to be here with you as it is every day that…that we step into the firelight of the global campfire and allow God's word to speak to us and take the next step forward, not only in our journey with the Bible, but also our journey in life. So, it's…it’s a joy to take his next step forward together with you and we’ll be going back into the book of Jeremiah. Today chapter 30 verse 1 through 31 verse 26 and we’re reading from the New Living Translation this week.
Prayer:
Father, we thank you for your word. We thank you for your kindness. We thank you for the way that your word speaks to us. Even as we read in Jeremiah today, so many of us have children who are wayward, and we’ve found ourselves concerned and it's been a matter of prayer in the community here for us as long as we’ve been a community. And, so, this has always been an issue, but we read today, “your children will come back to you from the distant land of the enemy. There is hope for your future, says the Lord. Your children will come again to their own land”. And even though we know we’re reading prophetic words about bringing those from exile home this still seems so deeply to apply in our own lives and the relationships that have become wayward or have gone astray or have been lost. And, so, we pray Lord, for those...those who are in exile, those who once walked with you, but have in one way or another, walked away and walked right into their own captivity. Set them free Father. We pray in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
Announcements:
dailyaudiobible.com is home base. It is the website. It is where you find out what's going on around here and all the resources that are available for this journey and all the different places to connect. So, stay tuned. Stay connected in any way that you can.
Check out the Initiatives section of the website and you can see some of the different things that we have going on, like God of Your Story, but also Israel 2020. We’ll be going back to the land of the Bible this coming February and there are a small handful of spaces available on that trip just simply due to some cancellations. So, if going to the land of the Bible has been kind of something on your bucket list you may want to check that out. I know that it was actually never on my bucket list until I went and that just radically changed things, not in the way you might be thinking. It just…it made the Bible come alive. It just makes a difference to stand in a place that you’ve been reading about your whole life and, you know, imagining…just imagining the things that happened there. When you're actually standing there and going, “that happened right…like this is a real place. This…this really happened” and just to feel the crunch of the…the earth beneath your feet and being able to turn in a circle, you know, just things that you can't do when you're looking at pictures or just the smells of the different places. Like, you just can't get that any other way. So, yeah, we've been going back every year since, taking a pilgrimage each year, because it just…it does that. It makes the Bible…you can't see the Bible same after that. So, anyway, there's a…there’s a little handful of spots. So, if you wanna…if you wanna come along, check it out at dailyaudiobible.com in the Initiatives section.
If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible. If what’s happening here, this bringing the spoken word of God read fresh every day, this rhythm of life every day, if that brings encouragement into your life then thank you for your partnership. There’s a link on the homepage. If you're using the Daily Audio Bible app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or, if you prefer, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.
And, as always, if you have a prayer request or comment you can just hit the Hotline button, the little red button in the top of the app and just start talking or you dial 877-942-4253.
And that's it for today. I'm Brian I love you and I'll be waiting for you here tomorrow.
Community Prayer and Praise:
Hi Brian and the Daily Audio Bible family this is Wade the veteran from Japan. I want to give you guys a praise report and I just want to say I love you all and I thank you for your prayers. I have found a full-time job with a Japanese company and I started…I just started two weeks ago. I mean, unfortunately, I don’t get paid until next month, the 28th of next month but at least now I’m working and I’m very grateful for all of you and for praying for me. It’s been a very tough and very hard struggle these last 10 years since I’ve retired from the military living here. And also, now that I have a job, I’m going to do the very best that I can to work out of the debt that I’m under. And, you know, it’s 30,000, a little over 30,000…$33,000 that I’m in debt but I will get out of it and I will be free of it. And one of the most important things for me too is to go home and see my mom. Like I said before, it’s been over 10 years since I’ve seen her. And I also pray and ask that you keep praying for my son as he has Tourette’s and other issues that really affect him. I love you all. I just want to say thank you. And Brian, thank you for this wonderful app and thank you for the Daily Audio Bible. I love listening to it. God bless you all. And for those of you who are calling in every day, I pray for you as well. Thank you all so very much. God bless you and thank you.
Good morning Daily Audio Bible community this is Dave from North Carolina and this is my first time calling although I’ve been a long-time listener. I have an urgent request that oh Father you would reach down and find Jeffrey Stewart wherever he is. Last I heard from him was Saturday in the city of Raleigh as I was trying to help him get out of a place where he was being threatened by a loan shark. He’s a recovering alcoholic and he loves You but he’s lost in many ways and I pray that You would find him physically, spiritually and bring him back to those who love and care for him but most importantly Lord him back so that he finally has peace and comfort in You. Thank you.
This is Songbird 047 and I just listened to Monday, October the 14th podcast and Brian you are talking about a song which just happens to be one of my favorites from when I was a child, but you couldn’t remember the song. So, here it goes. [singing] turn your eyes upon Jesus look full in His wonderful face and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace [singing stops]. Have a good Monday everyone. I pray for you all and I thank you for your prayers. Blessings.
Hi good morning my name’s Laverne and I called in I think probably maybe a couple weeks ago just to say hello and I wasn’t able to share some things that’s really going on. So, I’m hearing a lot of people and their marriages and things breaking down and being really difficult and I’ve been in that. My marriage is…is broken. We’re separated now, we have been for about 18 months. I live in a different home to him. He lives in our family home. I might’ve mentioned that before. And then I found out recently that he was…he’s been dating but we’re still married, and he just says, “well we’re divorced because he says so.” So, I’m struggling…I have been struggling with that but…and I’ve been crying and not crying but I remember a part of my life wanting to not be with him anyway because I just find that…it just…it just didn’t feel right. But then recently, I’ve been…God…every season God gives me a word and this season has been distraction. I thought it was to do with work and things at work but actually what I realized is that the enemy is on the prowl and he’s on the attack and actually what he’s doing is he’s severing marriages because then our focus is totally on our husbands or on our wives but actually our focus needs to be on God and I’m realizing now that every day when I get up and I’m crying over this, over my husband and stuff, actually that’s not what it’s supposed to be. If it’s meant to be it will be. If God has us then no man can separate us no matter what we’re going through. Now I have my witnesses too which has been lust and his is the same, but I refuse to go down that road anymore and the enemy does not have a hand over me. And this morning I woke up with knowing that actually…God is…Jesus is coming soon and guys we’ve got to be…we’ve got to be focused…focused on Christ first and everything else will come to pass. We are not weak. We have all authority in Christ. Come on people we can do this. We’ll pray for one another. I pray for you. Pray for me. Amen.
__ Illinois. I want to just let everybody know how happy I was to hear Sinner Redeemed. In August of 2014 my 12-year-old son was riding his bike and hit by an Amtrak train and miraculously he survived it. Well, I was in the hospital with him and Sinner called, and he prayed for Austin. And my heart was…I just cried because I thought somebody has taken time to pray for me and my son. Well sinner, I was so afraid that maybe something had happened to you. And I am…I am just so glad to hear your voice again and I hope to hear it many more times again. Thank you for calling back in Sinner and I love you and can’t wait to hear your voice again. It is so soothing to me because of the time that you did call. My heart was so broken, and I was so worried about my son that you calmed me down and made me realize that God was looking out for us and were you. So, I really appreciate your call back in Sinner…or Sinner Redeemed. Thank you very much. Hope to hear you again soon. Bye.

kiratto prichan episode 50 spoilers (I thought this was the last one but it’s not.)
may only good things happen to my sweet, precious, irritating children Meltic Star in this ep (they probably won’t even show up.)
the presumption that without some elite super diva to win this competition, everyone across the world with prichan channels about tons of things that aren’t singing and dancing will suddenly lose interest in prichan is so absurd. the fact that prichan equals youtube is the premise automatically makes the entire idea of this competition total bs. but I don’t know why I’m suddenly bothered by this in the final episode lmao
they have to keep performing to see who fills up the bottle first... so it’s just a lot of performances? ok
Anju shows up without Aira. “she’s saying that she doesn’t even need a partner to beat them?” says one of Mirai’s classmates, but no... it just means they didn’t make a new performance for Airanju.
Fortune Carat is visually the best performance in this entire anime imo, but having Anju in all white in front of this multicolor background makes her look kind of washed out and boring... oh nope she changed the entire background to match. I’m sorry Anju-sama I didn’t mean to underestimate you
what the fuck why does Aira get to perform with Anju next, why is it not the Kiratts’ turn? they’re Going To Lose
lmao @ how much Aira is getting into her evil rival role
MELTIC STAR!! what the heck they did show up.... gosh... omg they’re Miracle Star now, do we get a new song.....
oh. it’s that song. I mean... I guess this is the only song all 6 of them know. I want to say that I like the realism of it but I know it definitely wasn’t intentional and was instead the reason that there was always a split-screen kiratto chance, because showing multiple characters dancing on the same stage would’ve spoiled this big finale.....
it’s cute that they did each others’ uh... making drama... help I forgot what it’s called in prichan oh no. uhhh.... uhh!! app.. app?? yattemita!! that’s it.
oh and they got these new coords!! which are apparently some kind of legendary coord that we've never heard about at all... I feel like that’s an unnecessary detail, but sure whatever
Miracle Star’s bottle breaks, showering millions of glass shards down on the unsuspecting audience below. and also the.. entire world?? this came to be known as the day prichan died.
no wait actually Miracle Star won. good for them. if I was Meganee in this situation I would have had no idea what “the bottle exploded with iine sparkles even though it didn’t fill up first” meant in terms of judging, haha
the frustration of losing made Anju realize that she wants to continue being a prichan idol!! exactly what I thought would happen!! the reuse of the kiratto chance song (hell, I can’t remember the name of it either now.) made the final performance kind of anticlimactic to me, but I’m satisfied with the overall ending.
who was this Erika that was going to show up and never did? her last name was some... place? in Tokyo?? I want to say Ikebukuro but I know that’s just because I was thinking about Ikebukuro Ace a lot last night. (the sound of me googling) oh okay it was Roppongi Erika. Japanese twitter seems to think it’s the name of Dolly Waltz’s designer (there’s a number in her name so probably this for sure), or Anna’s maid, or both. and I mean... Karen seemed to know/be secretly working with Anna’s maid, and we know she’s good at sewing from the flashback of her with Anna’s mom in the exam episode--so she could be Erika. I... guess that’s something to find out later. (also someone said “it’s someone from Schwartz Rose, right?” lmao exactly what I was thinking)
wait... there’s one more ep. Meltic Star better not be whoever’s saying the goodbye in it.

Coronavirus cases exceed 8 million worldwide: Live updates | News
More than 8 million people have been confirmed to have the coronavirus around the world. More than 3.8 million have recovered, while at least 435,662 have died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The US, Brazil and the UK have reported the most deaths.
Beijing officials have described the coronavirus outbreak centred on the Xinfadi wholesale food market as “very grim” as more parts of the city are sealed off.
WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus has warned that countries need to “stay alert to the possibility of resurgence” as new clusters of cases emerge in Beijing and more than 100,000 cases of coronavirus are reported across the world every day.
Here are the latest updates:
Tuesday, June 16
11:05 GMT – Indonesia to reopen schools in low-risk areas
Indonesia will reopen schools located in low-risk areas starting in July after months of closure due to coronavirus, the education ministry said.
Sri Wahyuningsih, a ministry official, said in a webinar that the reopening of schools will be carried out in phases depending on the level of education and the provisions of the health protocols.
“Middle and high schools will start to reopen in July, elementary schools in September, while kindergartens will be the last to reopen in November at the earliest,” said Wahyuningsih, adding only 6 percent of all schools in the country are located in low-risk areas.

11:00 GMT – Turkey makes masks compulsory in 42 provinces
Turkey has made the wearing of face masks mandatory in five more provinces, following an uptick in COVID-19 cases.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Twitter that the wearing of masks is now compulsory in 42 of Turkey’s 81 provinces.
In the remaining provinces, residents are required to wear masks on public transportation and in shops and malls, and are being advised to wear masks and keep to social distancing practices elsewhere.
Koca said: “We cannot struggle against the virus without masks.”

10:30 GMT – Hungary MPs vote to end virus emergency powers
Hungarian MPs have voted to revoke anti-coronavirus emergency powers that triggered international criticism and fears of a power grab by Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Dominated by Orban’s ruling Fidesz party, parliament approved the lifting of a “state of danger” and related special powers to tackle the COVID-19 crisis.
The state of danger is expected to be formally lifted later on this week by the government.
10:00 GMT – Coronavirus a recipe for disaster for German potatoes
German demand for potatoes and potato products has collapsed during the coronavirus crisis, with the vegetable being used as animal feed or for making biogas instead, an industry body said.
There had been a “catastrophic reduction in sales” of frozen, chilled and dry potato products, the German Association of the Fruit, Vegetable and Potato Processing Industry (BOGK) said.
Germany is the biggest producer of potatoes in the European Union and a huge consumer.

09:30 GMT – More than 600,000 lose jobs in the UK
The number of people on British company payrolls fell by more than 600,000 in April and May as the coronavirus lockdown hit the labour market, and vacancies plunged by the most on record, official data showed.
The jobless rate unexpectedly held at 3.9 percent over the three months to April – despite a record slump in overall economic output during that period – as firms turned to the government’s job retention scheme to keep employees on their books.
Meanwhile, the number of people claiming job-related benefits also increased by a monthly 23.3 percent in May to 2.8 million.

08:45 GMT – Germany’s coronavirus tracing app goes live
Germany sought to mobilise the public to download a new smartphone app that seeks to help break the chain of coronavirus infections, one of several such apps in Europe that governments hope will revive travel and tourism.
The new Covid-Warn-App, which became available for download for Apple and Android phones overnight, uses Bluetooth short-range radio to monitor close contacts between people and issue a warning should one of them test positive.

“Everyone who downloads the app, and everyone who encourages friends to do so, is making a difference,” Health Minister Jens Spahn told ZDF public television ahead of a launch event in Berlin.
08:30 GMT – Singapore to start human trials of vaccine in August
Singapore scientists testing a COVID-19 vaccine from US firm Arcturus Therapeutics plan to start human trials in August after promising initial responses in mice.
More than 100 vaccines are being developed globally, including several already in human trials from the likes of AstraZeneca and Pfizer, to try and control a disease that has infected more than 8 million people and killed over 430,000 worldwide.
The vaccine being evaluated by Singapore’s Duke-NUS Medical School works on the relatively-untested Messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, which instructs human cells to make specific coronavirus proteins that produce an immune response.
New COVID-19 outbreak in China a threat to economic recovery
08:20 GMT – Hong Kong to allow gatherings of up to 50 people
Hong Kong will let groups of up to 50 people meet from Friday, easing an earlier limit of eight people, after reporting only a small number of coronavirus cases in recent weeks, Health Secretary Sophia Chan said.
The Asian financial hub has reported a total of 1,113 cases and four deaths since the outbreak began in late January.
07:45 GMT – Tokyo Olympic board member would support another delay
An executive board member of the Tokyo Olympic organising committee says another delay should be sought if the games can’t be held next year.
The Tokyo Olympics were to be held this year but were postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The suggestion comes from Haruyuki Takahashi in an interview published in the Japanese sports newspaper Nikkan Sports.
“The main priority is to make a united effort to hold them (Olympics) in the summer of 2021,” Takahashi said. He added if that is not possible we should start action once again to get another delay.

07:10 GMT – Ukraine president’s wife hospitalised with coronavirus
The wife of Ukraine’s President, Olena Zelenska, was hospitalised after contracting coronavirus and her condition was stable, the presidential office said.
Zelenska said last week she had tested positive for coronavirus, while her husband Volodymyr Zelenskiy and their two children had tested negative.

06:15 GMT – Privacy fears over COVID-19 apps by Bahrain, Kuwait, Norway
Amnesty International has raised privacy and security concerns over “invasive” contact-tracing apps rolled out by Bahrain, Kuwait and Norway to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
The UK-based rights group said an investigation into COVID-19 apps being used by 11 countries had rated Bahrain’s “BeAware Bahrain”, Kuwait’s “Shlonik” and Norway’s “Smittestopp” as among the “most dangerous” for human rights, putting hundreds of thousands of people at risk.
Amnesty found that all three were actively carrying out live or near-live tracking of users’ locations by frequently uploading GPS coordinates to a central server.

Hello, this is Saba Aziz in Doha, taking over the live blog from my colleague Kate Mayberry.
05:15 GMT –
I’m handing the blog to my colleagues in Doha shortly. Before I go, a quick round-up of what’s been happening over the past few hours.
The situation in Beijing is proving worrisome with city officials stepping up containment measures and other parts of China imposing quarantines on those travelling from the capital. Pakistan is also promising tougher measures as it tries to get a grip on the outbreak. Elsewhere, New Zealand has confirmed two new cases. The disease wasn’t acquired locally, however. It was found in two people who had recently returned from the UK.
05:00 GMT – Pakistan identifies 20 cities at coronavirus risk
Pakistan’s government says it has identified 20 cities that are most at risk from the rapid spread of the coronavirus and will be implementing strict lockdowns in certain neighbourhoods.
Al Jazeera’s Asad Hashim says the authorities are calling it a “smart” lockdown approach.
Hospitals struggle as coronavirus cases explode in Pakistan
On Monday, Pakistan endured the deadliest day of the pandemic so far, recording 110 deaths, taking the country’s tally to 2,897 people killed by COVID-19 since late February. Cases rose by 4,443 to 148,921.
Chairing a meeting on coronavirus response, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed officials to investigate increasing reports of hospitals in major cities hitting their capacity and not being able to admit more coronavirus patients, especially those requiring critical care.
04:10 GMT – US airlines threaten ban for passengers who refuse to wear masks
Major US airlines will provide masks to passengers who do not have them, and have warned passengers who refuse to wear masks that they could be banned from flights.
The airlines will clearly inform passengers about their individual policies on face coverings before flying, followed by an announcement with specific details onboard, Airlines for America said in a statement.
Each carrier will decide the appropriate consequences for passengers who fail to comply, up to and including being put on that airline’s no-fly list.
Read more about this here.

03:50 GMT – Beijing officials say Xinfadi market outbreak ‘very grim’
City officials in Beijing have described the coronavirus outbreak centred on the Xinfadi market as “very grim” according to the Global Times.
The Times says nine of 11 districts in Beijing have reported confirmed cases, with the area of Fengtai, which is around the market, the worst affected.
Beijing expects to complete a citywide inspection and sanitation campaign targeting wholesale and vegetable markets, as well as restaurants and canteens on Wednesday. All vendors and business operators will have to undergo nucleic acid tests.
03:30 GMT – Shanghai imposes quarantine for some domestic visitors
Shanghai says it will impose a 14-day quarantine on all people arriving in the city from medium to high-risk COVID-19 areas elsewhere in China.
Wu Jinglei, the director of Shanghai’s health commission, says those arriving from high-risk places will have to complete a centralised quarantine and will undergo nucleic acid testing twice.
02:30 GMT – Beijing imposes curbs on more districts after outbreak linked to market
Beijing is imposing coronavirus restrictions on more districts after an outbreak linked to the capital’s wholesale food market. There are now 22 districts deemed “medium-risk” with local authorities setting up checkpoints, stepping up social distancing and closing schools.
City officials reported 27 new cases for June 15, taking the total for the latest spike to 106, as the authorities track down close contacts of those known to have the virus.
Other cities in China have also responded to the outbreak, with some imposing quarantines or stepping up their own preventive measures.

02:15 GMT – China’s president to convene COVID-19 ‘solidarity’ summit with Africa
China’s President Xi Jinping is to hold a “solidarity” summit with Africa over the coronavirus pandemic.
Xi will deliver a keynote speech at the summit on June 17, according to Chinese state media.
02:00 GMT – New Zealand reports two new cases in travellers returning from UK
New Zealand has confirmed two new cases of coronavirus, both connected with travel to the UK and to each other.
New Zealand lifted all coronavirus restrictions last week, but is keeping its borders to closed to everyone except citizens and special cases.
00:00 GMT – More than 8 million coronavirus cases recorded worldwide
Some 8,005,294 cases of coronavirus have now been confirmed around the world, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The actual figure is likely to be much higher because countries often have different criteria for testing, and milder and asymptomatic cases may go undetected.
These are the five countries with the most cases:
US – 2,111,622
Brazil – 888,271
Russia – 536,484
India – 332, 424
United Kingdom – 298,315
These are the five countries that have recorded the most deaths:
US – 116,114
Brazil – 43,959
United Kingdom – 41,821
Italy – 34,371
France – 29,439
23:30 GMT – Coronavirus more likely to kill those with chronic conditions: CDC
A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found people with chronic illnesses including heart disease and diabetes are six times more likely to be admitted to hospital, and 12 times more likely to die than COVID-19 patients with no underlying conditions.
The CDC based its analysis on 1.32 million confirmed cases of coronavirus received between January 22 and the end of May.
Although information on underlying conditions was available for only 22 percent of those patients, the CDC found that of those, 32 percent had a heart-related illness, 30 percent had diabetes and 18 percent had chronic lung conditions, including asthma.
Tumblr media

The CDC said age remained a major risk. The percentage of intensive care admission was highest among people aged at least 60 and over with underlying conditions. People over the age of 80 were the most likely to die, even if they did not have a chronic illness.

This project aims every person, interested in art. People who can feel deeply and are able to look through the artist’s eyes, to “feel” the love expressed through the sculptures and enjoy it the same way they are enjoying my illustrations, the very first version of these illustrations, which became popular can be seen here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/63075683/Battery-illustrations
People nowadays Vs. People 30 years ago
In the mid-to-late-20th century, the American economy and culture were ripe for 30-year-old men, who — more than European and Japanese — typically landed well-paid careers, bought homes, and supported large families. But since then, getting ahead has become much harder.
What's going on: Today, 30-year-old millennials are more likely to be still living with their parents and, while earning about the same or less than boomers, are typically saddled with college debt.
One consequence: Possible trouble for an older generation that will rely on them doing better.
The background: Millennials now comprise almost a quarter of the population and are the largest generation participating in the workforce. But their median salaries are lower than the prior generation of 30-year-olds, and the financial burdens they carry are heavier, limiting how much their lifestyle can mirror that of their parents:
So far, the trends suggest a break with prior American rites of passage, including marriage and child-bearing. According to some demographers, this break could slow economic growth.
Men are more likely to earn less. In 1975, only a quarter of 25 to 34-year-old men made less than $30K per year, but that number rose to 41% in 2016.
Going deeper: As a measure of upward mobility, 92% of 30-year-olds in 1970 earned more than their parents at that age, according to a 2016 study led by Raj Chetty, a Stanford economist (h/t Roger Lowenstein). But of those who were 30 in 2014, just half earned more.
Chetty attributed most of this erosion to slower GDP growth and a change in the distribution of GDP favoring higher earners: GDP would have to rise by 6% a year to get the same impact, he said, and wealth would have to be distributed much more evenly.
In other words, Chetty suggested, it has become much, much harder for young lower- and middle-income workers to earn as much of the nation's growing wealth as they once did.
Today, 30 year olds are:
Living with their parents: In 1975, when the oldest Boomers were 29, 57% of 18 to 34- year-olds lived with a spouse in their own household. Even as late as 1990, almost half lived with a partner. But in 2016, 31% were living in their parents’ home, making it the new, most common living arrangement for young adults, according to Census data.
Paying more for college: In 1975, college tuition cost $2,450 for public, four-year colleges (in 2017 dollars). In 2017, it was almost $10,000, according to CollegeBoard.
In more debt: In 1989, less than 20% of families had student debt, compared with 41% in 2013, according to the Census. The amount owed almost tripled in that time.
Less likely to be homeowners: 57% of 30 to 34-year-olds were homeowners in 1982, compared with just 45% in 2017.
The impact of significant student debt can be seen in lower marriage rates, according to Dora Gicheva, an economist at UNC Greensboro.
In 2017, 57% of millennials were never married. In 1985 — when boomers were around the same age — only a third had never been married, Pew Research's Richard Fry told Axios. Even accounting for unmarried living partners does not make up the difference, he said.
Having fewer children: When Boomers were in their 20s, the fertility rate was 2.48, well beyond the replacement level of 2.1. Today, it is just 1.76.
When a recent survey asked why they were having fewer kids, most young adults said “child care is too expensive.”
“Millennials are more risk averse than earlier generations at the same age. People 50 or even 25 years ago didn’t wait to be ‘financially well established’ before starting a family. Now it’s considered irresponsible not to.”
— Richard Jackson president of the Global Aging Institute, told Axios
Exceptions:
Opportunity for 30-year-old women has improved, which contributes to falling fertility rates, says Eric Kaufmann, a professor at Birkbeck College.
Millennial women are likelier to hold a Bachelor’s degree than men.
Women’s pay has increased substantially from one generation to the next
The share of young women who are homemakers has decreased from 43% in 1975 to 14% in 2016, according to Census data.
And the percentage of 25 to 29-year-old African Americans and Hispanics with at least a Bachelor's degree has increased even faster than white Americans since 1980, although a gap still exists, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
Twice as many African Americans have graduated from college than in 1991 and there has been a 60% increase for Hispanics over the past 20 years.
Still, an income gap between young, white Americans and racial minorities has persisted. Median income for African Americans between the ages of 25 and 34 as a percentage of white Americans has hovered around 75% since 1974.
How dating has changed over the last 100 years
Some people look back fondly on dating, generations ago, with romantic ideas of greater morality and better values. Others think that with all of the online apps and matchmaking websites we have today, it's never been easier to play the field.
But each era of dating in the past century was not without its pros, its cons, and its own set of unspoken rules. From the turn of the 20th century, to the present day, romantic relationships have been an evolving part of culture, just like everything else.
Dating becomes a thing
Tumblr media
The concept of dating really began at the turn of the 20th century. Prior to the late early 1900s, courtship was a much more private, unemotional affair. Women would meet with several men, with her parents present, to whittle the pickings down to the most suitable match for marriage, which heavily relied on factors such as financial and social status. When a young woman decided on a man she wanted to see exclusively, their activities as a couple took place either in the household, or at social gatherings. At that time, there was no such thing as just two young lovers "going out on a date."
However, this began to change in the early years of the 20th century, when couples began to go out together in public and unsupervised. Still, the ultimate and very apparent goal was still that of marriage. This stands in stark contrast to today's dating world, when the topic of marriage may not be brought up for several years.
The gentleman caller
Tumblr media
The first decade of the 20th century was marked by the figure of the gentleman caller. If a young man was interested in a young woman, he would follow the proper protocol of calling upon her, which meant that he would come to the family's home and (hopefully) be welcomed into their parlor. If he was invited back for subsequent visits, he would be free to come and call upon the young woman during hours specified by her parents.
As the years rolled on into the 1920s, however, this system quickly became outdated and unfavorable. Author Beth L. Bailey writes in her book From Front Porch to Back Seat: Courtship in Twentieth Century America, "Dating had almost completely replaced the old system of calling by the mid-1920s — and, in so doing, had transformed American courtship." This was a period of time when couples started going out on dates, which also meant they started paying for dates. This changed the relationship dynamic between a young man and a young woman, as now it was the man's duty to pay for the date, whereas before it was the woman who decided the terms of the visit.
Courtship vs. dating
Tumblr media
The fundamental difference between courtship and dating is that of freedom. While traditional courtship had its own set of rules and rituals, dating, as it evolved, became less structured. Courtship was seen as a fundamental part of a well-functioning society. When people started dating, relationships became less restricted and more personal.
So what instigated this cultural shift? In Jodi O'Brien's book, Encyclopedia of Gender and Society, Volume I, she writes, "Different institutions were becoming more prominent in the lives of young men and women, such as school, college, and workplaces, which exposed them to a large pool of potential dating partners. As a result, the purpose of dating was primarily to have fun, not to find a marriage partner. However, couples would form after several dates if they were interested in having more exclusive relationships." This starts to resemble what we would now conceive of as modern dating, and the ritual of courtship was left in the dust.
A proper match vs. falling in love
Tumblr media
With the introduction of dating also came the focus on falling in love, rather than finding a society-approved match. In previous years, love was not seen as being of central importance to a marriage, and if it was to come it would emerge after the wedding had already occurred. But with the introduction of dating came an increased desire for romance and love before deciding to commit to marriage.
This concept, explained in depth in The Oxford Companion to United States History, goes, "By the early nineteenth century, couples began to consider romantic love prerequisite for marriage and based their unions on companionship. The era's fiction frequently drew on love themes, while articles, essays, and public orations stressed mutual respect, reciprocity, and romance as ingredients of good marriages. Young courting couples chose their own partners, and their letters focused on romance rather than on the practical matters that had dominated the correspondence of earlier generations." The desire to climb the social ladder or to secure one's place in society fell by the wayside, and the desire to find a favorable longterm partner took its place.
Going steady
Tumblr media
In the 1950s, "going steady" was the term for being in an exclusive relationship. This status was about the relationship, sure, but it was also about standing out amongst your peers. According to the University of California, Santa Barbara, "Across university campuses, couples publicized their decision to 'go steady' when the man gave the woman an article of his clothing to wear, such as a jacket, sweater, or ring." Dating had become much more about youth culture than about family expectations.
The way in which two people experienced sexuality when dating also shifted. In the earlier part of the 20th century, sex and sexuality were not openly discussed. As author Jodi O'Brien put it, "Sex was desexualized" and reserved for marriage, when the couple had entered into a spiritual union with God. As dating gradually became more about personal pleasure throughout the decades, the expression of sexuality became much more commonplace.
According to the Oxford Companion to United States History, "The terms 'necking' and 'petting' — the former referring to kisses and caresses above the neck, the latter to the same below it — entered public discussion, giving names to previously unspoken private activities." Now when we think of the '50s, we tend to think of a period of purity and the Stepford Wife ideal, but in actuality, it was a time of sexual change that ended up resulting in a dramatic increase in population.
Free love
Tumblr media
Between the popularization of rock 'n' roll, and protesting the Vietnam War, 1960s youth culture was hot for revolution. Not only was it the activities of the US government that young people were resisting, but they were shirking old social conventions as well. If the '50s saw young people starting to experiment with sex, the '60s was the resulting explosion of sexual activity in the name of freedom.
For a long time, sex was either not discussed or seen as a kind of enemy — a destroyer of young girl's reputations. But this stopped being the case with the hippie generation. America in the 1960s author Edmund Lindop describes the sexual shift of the period, "For youth of the 1960s, such restrictions were a thing of the past. Many young women took birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. They freely explored their sexual feelings. Sex before marriage was no longer taboo. Young people extolled the benefits of "free love"— that is, making love without marriage or long-term commitments."
There were no rules for dating anymore. Young people did what they wanted, when they wanted, and modern-day "hook up" culture began.
Dating and tech
The next major change in dating started with the introduction of matchmaking services and the internet. But the concept of online dating was being worked out way before the general public even had access to the internet. In 1965, two Harvard students created what is known as "Operation Match" to make dating easier for young people.
The "World Wide Web" officially became available to everyone in 1991, and online dating websites were soon popping up all over the place: Match.com was officially founded in 1995. And it was at the turn of the 21st century that people also began using Craigslist as a way of linking up with other people romantically. Shortly after, sites like OKCupid followed.
Millennial dating
Tumblr media
In 2017, you can't turn your head without finding someone who has at least one dating app on their phone: Tinder, Plenty of Fish, and Bumble, to name a few. While some people think this approach to dating really works, others collectively sigh at the thought of the current dating game. So why are so many millennials complaining that dating nowadays is just too frustrating and complicated, when technology was supposed to make it easier?
The individual has become more and more important in today's culture than ever before, and technology has played a big role in that. Just think of the concept of the selfie. This generation is much more focused on themselves than previous generations. Combined with the casual culture of hooking up, one night stands, and friends with benefits, actually finding someone to seriously date can be difficult. Millennials simply have so many options that "going steady" can be a hard pitch to sell.
Is dating getting worse or better?
Tumblr media
There is a case for both sides of this argument. Nowadays, we have more freedom to choose how we live our lives. We make up our own rules (or lack thereof) and are allowed so many options in how we wish to interact with romantic partners.
However, this is exactly what makes dating in 2017 so difficult. What does the other person want? Are they looking for something real or are they just trying to have fun? Are there any mind games going on here? Today's dating world is certainly a maze, but that doesn't mean that love doesn't still happen. Whether you meet on Tinder, or you meet at a bar, you can end up finding "the one."
