#we have the raven house so what the fuck is belos

im so mentally ill right now i just curated a list of all of the different allusions the owl house makes to caleb wittebane and his witch girlfriend. for anyone interested, i have them in chronological order: (sort of)

the first reference we get to caleb is actually all the way back in season 2 episode 4. at the end of the episode, gwendolyn explains that her great-grandmother told her of a human who lived in bonesborough who left his diary at the library, and who mysteriously vanished one day (which we know now is actually him being run out of town), and also briefly brings up the capability of titan's blood to create rifts between realms. initially, this is just the precursor to finding out who phillip wittebane is - an 'explorer' from the deadwardian era of the boiling isles, but the specific mention that it was gwen's great grandmother, aka eda and lilith's great-great grandmother, suggests that this clawthorne ancestor may have known the wittebane brothers personally. this would suggest that maybe this great-grandmother of gwendolyn's Was caleb's partner, or perhaps caleb's daughter who had never gotten to meet him, however the latter seems a little more unlikely.

the next reference i found was in knock knock knockin on hooty's door. in eda's segment of the episode, she flashes back to the day the owl beast attacked her dad, and this is the first glimpse we get of her dad, who bears a striking resemblance to the wittebane brothers. we get clearer glimpses of phillip in elsewhere and elsewhen, and the similarities in hair and face shape are definitely no coincidence. aside that, he has the same distinct nose shape as caleb/hunter.

more on dell clawthorne, we do actually end up meeting him in the present.

in this shot, we see his palisman - a yellow cardinal. this is important for two reasons. 1) bird palismen are notably tied to the clawthorne family, like eda with owlbert, lilith and her raven palisman (which i have issues with, but that's for another time), gwen and hawksley, and dell and his yellow cardinal. 2) this is the same species of bird as flapjack, who we know belonged to either caleb or his witch partner, but most likely caleb. another direct connection.

we also learn that historically, the clawthornes were palisman carvers, and that dell could no longer continue his craft because of sustained nerve damage in his hand, and the loss of his left eye. another thing i noticed is that i'm pretty sure him, eda and lilith are all left handed, but that's not really an important detail. every afab in my family was left-handed up until me, so whether or not it's a thing that you pass down, i have no idea.

other than that, we learn later on in hollow mind that the very first iteration of belos' mask was carved by caleb, so it may have even been caleb who passed the tradition into the clawthorne family. either that, or perhaps he and the witch bonded over their shared hobbies.

also at the very end of elsewhere and elsewhen is this shot, which to me tells of phillip already beginning experiments on the very first grimwalkers. in this shot i can see what looks like a decaying grimwalker hand tagged '4' - likely his failed fourth attempt to recreate caleb, an early golden guard cloak, some scientific diagrams, and some bones. whether or not those are grimwalker bones or the actual corpse of his brother, i actually don't want to know, thanks. holding out hope that they're whatever the fuck 'bones of ortet' are. but this does confirm, at least to me, that caleb died Before phillip got stranded indefinitely in the demon realm.

there's also this page from phillip's diary in the same episode, a crude drawing of him and caleb distinguishable from the face shapes.

we're actually not doing this chronologically anymore, and i skipped to elsewhere and elsewhen because it was a convinient segue. back to yesterday's lie, folks.

this lil collection of screenshots is pretty much all references to the brothers i could find from yesterday's lie. the statues in the park are clearly of the wittebane brothers, with phillip sporting a signature ponytail, and caleb distinguishable yet again by the bump on his nose that he shares with hunter. also in town is the gravesfield sign, important because it states that gravesfield was founded in 1635, which is the time of the wittebane brothers and in line with the deadwardian era of the boiling isles, and also depicts a town crest bearing striking resemblance to the old golden guard sigil that hunter is seen sewing onto his cloak in any sport in a storm.

the two drawings are a little more difficult to decipher. vee's news clipping, written by the conspiracy theorist we meet later in the episode, is just a small part of the larger book that he has. this slightly less faded image, if you look close into it, we see what i assume is both brothers conversing with a witch, or a interpretation of a witch. it's difficult to decipher who is who, but i'm assuming the brother on the left is caleb, with flapjack on his shoulder, holding the witches hand and being civil. phillip, on the other hand, appears to be holding a torch in his right hand - witch hunter, remember? - and a 'picto-glyph' in his other. you could suggest it's the other way around, but i don't think that's vitally important. what's depicted here are the brothers. jacob even briefly recounts their story from the human world perspective - two brothers lured into a 'realm of evil' by a real witch, never to be seen again.

having mentioned any sport in a storm, i should mention that this is the first time we hear caleb's name. when hunter is trying to come up with a cover name, flapjack suggests the name caleb, and hunter goes by 'caleb jasper bloodwilliams' for the majority of the episode.

this is all before hollow mind, which, as we know, contains the most information about the wittebane brothers. we've all seen the screenshots of the paintings, but we know that caleb bears a very striking resemblance to hunter, and was spotted in the photos with who appears to be a female witch, implied to be an ancestor of the clawthornes. phillip even mentions that 'out of all the grimwalkers, [hunter] looks the most like [caleb]', if you disregard various scarring on hunter's face, the red eyes characteristic of grimwalkers, and the tooth gap.

here we also get a little characterisation for caleb. contrasted to who we learn phillip is, caleb is a lot more liberal and accepting of change. unlike phillip, he learns to embrace magic, embrace witches, and embrace the demon realm despite his puritan upbringing in early america. he even embraces phillip, who had already succumbed to whatever ailment he had given himself as a result of carving glyphs into his skin. however, phillip, despite caleb's attempts to ease him into the demon realm and embrace it as something wonderful, ends up murdering him, and it is very likely at this point that the clawthorne witch banished phillip to the demon realm permanently as a punishment, knowing it was a world he hated, and buried the portal they'd been using to traverse worlds in her estate, later to be found by eda when she ran away from home.

also in this episode we get a flashback to hunter's return from eclipse lake. belos and the collector talk, and after the collector suggests that he keeps making grimwalkers just to destroy them, and that he finds fun in it, belos denies the accusation and claims that every time the golden guard chooses to betray him, it hurts.

not only does caleb's good heart persist throughout his clones, to the point of having to betray his younger brother again and again, but he still sees caleb in them all. he may be beyond the point of no return, willing to kill them each time, but he still longs for a brother that sees the world the way he does, so he can have a brother he seemed to love so dearly in his youth return to him.

to be honest, there's not much mention of caleb, the clawthorne ancestor, or grimwalkers after that until the last two episodes.

in clouds on the horizon, hunter decides to hide the fact that he is a grimwalker from gus and willow, and is unsure if he is a human or a witch. all he knows is that he is a clone of 'someone belos made disappear'.

then, king's tide. hunter and belos reunite for the first time in the finale post-hollow mind, and in this episode, belos finally meets flapjack again. not only has hunter betrayed him, the clone he expected to last longer, the one that caleb looked the most like, but he also wields caleb's palisman. this enrages him, probably because he doesn't see hunter anymore. he sees caleb. he shouts caleb's name, confirming for the first time that caleb was the name of his older brother, and that flapjack originally belonged to either caleb or his partner. i know there was a whole thing about whether or not he said 'caleb' or 'kill him', but dana Has confirmed on twitter that he said 'caleb'.

all the way back in episode 6, flapjack made a decision to become hunter's palisman, and the bat queen said this,

Things I think will happen in Season 3 of The Owl House

(This will contain spoilers!! If you're not caught up on The Owl House leave the post!)

Eda will have a breakdown of sorts within the first episode. Think about it, Eda has been separated from the two people she had when she had nothing. King was taken by The Collector to play Owl House, and Luz, as well as Amity, Hunter, Willow, and Gus, were pretty much forced into the Human Realm. And Eda won't have a clue. Not only has she lost her arm, and not only is the love of her life near death due to the Draining Spell, but she doesn't know where her partner in crime/adoptive son, and her apprentice/honorary daughter are.

Going with the last one, the father's of the Witchlets are gonna be just as terrified. (I'd say parents, but Odalia doesn't count, and we don't know if Perry is a single father or not. I'll make edits as needed! :) They have no clue where their kids are. And, Darius is obviously going to worry about Hunter's wellbeing. So, in an effort to get their kids back, Eda, Darius, and the Dad Squad might team up to figure something out, and maybe make a portal to the Human Realm.

Camila will be happy to meet Amity, and will likely try to show her (and the other Witchlets most likely) embarrassing photos of Luz when she was little.

There will be a huge focus on the Whittebane brothers, and an instance of Hunter having a panic attack seeing the statues in Gravesfield. Luz, Hunter, and the others will want to tell everyone who Philip Whittebane really is, and people like Jacob Hopkins won't accept that. So, there could be conflict there.

The Witchlets will have to go into disguises, similarly to how Luz used to always hide her ears to not get attention in the Demon Realm. (There's plenty of fanart of this already and I love it.)

Eda and Raine will have a wedding, but this'll be more toward the end of the series. And we'll finally get a Raeda kiss >:(

Belos will come back somehow, and... I feel he'll be a nuisance. He's so maladjusted to life as it is, and he definitely won't be ready to see what the Human Realm is like. I can only imagine how angry that man'll get over seeing that Witches are popular in human culture. Plus I'm pretty sure people would try to drive him out of Gravesfield, especially after Luz and the Witchlets reveal the truth. (And because you know he's going to say something fucking stupid and get his ass kicked.)

King... I feel will pull some sneakies. He knows how Eda's curse is affecting her. So... he might tell The Collector to help Eda get rid of her curse. And he'd also tell them that Lilith shares the curse with her sister now. And if The Collector actually is able to cure the curse, King might request that he not recapture the Owl Beast. (And not capture the Raven Beast.) Why? Eda made amends with the Beast. So... they could be like Eda's funky pal. A Clawthorne family Beast if you will.

At the end of the series, Alador will likely move somewhere with Amity, Edric, and Emira, so that they can start anew without Odalia.

The Demon Realm will be rebuilt, and will have access to more Human Realm things now.

Same goes in reverse for the Demon Realm.

Camila will take la chancla to Belos. She will ensure that man sees Hell if she can.

I'm probably leaving out a lot lmao, but I wanted to get my thoughts out here. I may add onto this post, I'm not sure yet. If you have anything you think will happen in Season 3, feel free to let me know! :)

Keeping Up A-fear-ance's Thoughts

I finished writing this shortly after 3 am after watching the new episode like three times because I simply had too much energy about it and I have so many thoughts because I simply live for clawthornes and also I tried to break it up with more photos this time sorry not sorry if it's a lot ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

YOUNG EDA!! let me just say I am quite a fan of opening with a flashback like we've done here and the last episode

anyways we've only really seen young Eda as a wild and confident and happy little child so I appreciate seeing this side of her with the anxiety and fear she's feeling here. I love seeing what the curse stuff was like for her as a kid

I feel like the fact that its actually both Lilith and Gwendolyn have spent their whole lives dedicated to trying to find a cure could probably have held some kind of weight on Eda at some point. Even though she shouldn't feel guilty or responsible for that, I still feel like it's gotta suck knowing these people have spent so much time on something you know is likely never gonna happen, all for you.

predictions for season 2 of the owl house? anything you want to see but you think probably won’t happen/ anything you don’t want to see but you think probably will happen?

I got my laptop out for this so I could type, also this is just a lot of random thoughts mostly about stuff I’d want to see but could incredibly wrong about/never happens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Feel free to ask for further elaboration on any of these because I’m sure there’s a few I might be able to go on about.

I would LOVE to learn more about the clawthorne family, just like their parents or more of their past.

Idk if i have any specific predictions, I’m holding out hope for my clawthorne parents are wild witches theory but i also think it’s just as possible i am terribly wrong about that but will still die on that hill until canon proves me wrong and idk if we’d learn anything like this in season 2 or later down the road in a hopeful season 3.

Also I very much want to see Lilith have to WORK for her redemption. I love her and want to see her face her consequences and grow. I also do think there’s gonna be a lot of conflict in the owl house surrounding her presence if she’s staying there. I think King will be the first to come around, but between Eda and Luz I’m not really sure who would come around first

I also feel like Lilith will feel super bad and will throw herself into researching either curse cures OR anything she can find about portals/what she may have known about portals and the day of unity from the emperor’s coven. Someone also had this theory about Lilith testing out potential curse cures on herself that may have a boatload of side effects ranging from silly to disasterous and I think that would be interesting to see.

Also I think it’d be hilarious that since Eda was pardoned, if Lilith was suddenly like public enemy no. 1 for betraying the emperor and she’s the one with all the wanted posters and the highest bounty. Can you imagine how much Lilith would freak the fuck out when she sees a wanted poster for herself?? She’d probably pass out.

Also I’m sure that pardon won’t actually last long. The emperor could just as easily decide to say Eda has continued to commit crimes and that she should be brought to the conformatorium.

I think Luz might be super excited to teach glyphs, but she won’t actually know how to be a teacher at the beginning, and combine that with the idea that Eda hates school and was never good at just being a student, it’s probably gonna make for some frustrating lessons.

I feel like a lot of people want lumity to perfectly come together in season 2, and don’t get me wrong I’d love to see that too, but i feel like it’s not gonna be as fast as people want it to be. From the reddit ama Dana did, she made it clear she never set out to make a story that was about a romance, but they do enjoy creating the threads that tie that whole relationship together, so I just imagine it’ll be a bit slower than people want it to be

WILLOW!! I think willow is gonna become VERY strong with her powers!! I think we’ve barely scratched the surface of just how much she can do.

I also think she and Amity will rekindle their friendship by the end of season 2. Maybe Willow’s dads will be wary of it at first because they remember how badly hurt she was the first time around but are ultimately glad to see her happy with her friend again.

Gus earns his rightful place as president of the Human Appreciation Society again.

I definitely want to see more of Gus as well, and I’m sure we will, I’m just not sure I can predict any specific things about him at the moment. I definitely think his powers are gonna grow to be VERY strong as well though. Kid’s already advanced for his age, I’m sure he’s gonna be amazing!!

Also I imagine Willow, Gus and Amity are all going to struggle with the coven system. It’s what they’ve always known and have hoped to be a part of! Learning that it’s not a good thing is bound to bring about some cognitive dissonance for these kids, especially Amity.

I want to learn more about palismen! Why are so many abandoned?? We’ve only seen two of them, Owlbert and Lilith’s raven, so is there a reason not as many people seem to have them around??

I think if we get a portal back and Luz sees Camila again, it’ll probably be near the end of season 2, also whenever Camila meets Eda she’ll probably HATE her at first for “kidnapping” her child. It’ll take quite a bit of explaining before she calms down and comes around to being okay with these people. She’ll LOVE Luz’s friends immediately though.

Amity standing up to her parents would be awesome, so would seeing her siblings be protective of her in the presence of her parents.

Also speaking of the Blight parents, I am very much not ready to hop on any “Alador actually wants to be a good parent” train or anything yet. Just because Dana said he’s fun to write, doesn’t mean he’ll become a good person. All we know right now is the scene we saw in Understanding Willow and that Odalia makes Amity dye her hair so right now they’re both shitty parents and I won’t act like either of them has the potential to become a better person until we see more.

Also we probably briefly saw them in Lilith’s flashback scene, and while Alador is clearly an abominations student, it’s hard to tell if Odalia has the same color or if it’s slightly darker and she was actually oracle track, but can you just imagine if she WAS oracle?? That idea terrifies me because I could totally see her using that power to keep track of her children, to try and keep them on the path she deems best for them, and also see if her children are doing things she doesn’t want. It certainly would create an interesting conflict, but again terrifying to me if she had that power and used it like that.

Dana said birds are a Clawthorne thing, but Belos has some wing imagery and the coven masks are bird like so I have a guess that he may be in some way related to the Clawthorne family.

I want Hooty to have a friend but I fully doubt that will happen, which then I think could lead to a possibility of him finally getting pissed and wanting actual respect which could be interesting, especially if he just, y’know, decides not to let them in to the house or something. I also really want us to find out what the hell Hooty is. I wrote a theory on that not too long ago, but my guess is really a toss up in the air and could be completely wrong at this moment.

We’ll probably learn more about King as well, maybe something to do with his supposed role as the King of Demons, or maybe about the collar or why his horn is cracked.

OH, also I want to see how Eda met King.

Also I want Owlbert and Lilith’s palisman to interact because I bet it’d be cute. I also had this theory about the personalities of those two palisman but the gist of it was that I concluded it would be really funny if that raven was a little shit and that’s why Lilith doesn’t often take him off the staff. The Owl House gang doesn’t let her leave him on the staff as much when she’s living around them probably.
