I think it's so adorable that early humans took wild gourds - a tiny fruit that hollows out as it dries, making it float - and decided to make something out of it

they thought the tiny fruit was so good that they bred it for thousands of years, making it larger to form into bowls and cups, and different shapes to become bottles and spoons

and musical instruments

And then, people took the hollow gourds they farmed, and they turned them into houses for birds. We adapted them into the perfect houses for birds, and now there are specific breeds of birdhouse gourd just for making into birdhouses

And humans dedicated gardening space and time and thousands of years of breeding to make the gourds so absolutely perfect for birds, that there is a species of bird that lives almost exclusively in them

"What about Walter? What about Erin?" Fair and valid concerns. Counterpoint, what about Hero? What about Normal? What about Mae Hailes and all the other people working for D.A.D.D.I.E.S.?

I feel like what hurts me most about Sparrow being all “I’m not proud of you” isn’t that he said it, cause I could already kinda guess that from the first scene.

It’s just that normal doesn’t seem to have had any inclination of it prior. Like, to him that’s just his dad being his dad. Not his dad trying to nudge him into being more normal.

And that’s exactly why Normal believes his dad hates him (at least in my mind). Cause as humans we are built to remember the bad as a way of survival, and normal probably can only think about the times he’s seen his dad cringe and how he’s so stupid for just thinking his dad was worried (even if he was worried and not in fact cringing.) like every memory gets corrupted with this new realization. When Teeny won the mascot contest was your dad actually smiling at how happy you were or was he just avoiding a scene, Did he actually enjoy watching those anime movies with you and hero when you were little or are you misremembering, was your uncle trying to warn you that you shouldn’t trust when your dad says he loves you, and so on and so on.

so. first thing you need to know is that this is an AU of an AU and i've entirely lost the thread. the second thing you need to know is that this AU of an AU is the lovely @cohnal's doing. it read one of my fics and went, "hey, what if [Much Beloved Character] met these guys." and i went, "AUGH. FUCK. YEAH. HELL YEAH."

so. the background information is that there's this little gang of three vampires who've been living together for a long time. they're super close, and have most recently been living in a big old house somewhere that could reasonably be described as 'on the edge of town.' they've been getting a little reckless lately with their feeding, killing people they probably shouldn't and attracting attention when they didn't before. so one day, a vampire hunter comes to town.

the hunter -- we will call him owen -- by virtue of being a hunter, is already a little on the edge of things. his work mostly keeps him alone and separate from others. this is an interesting contrast to the vampires, who have of course been exiled from life but very much behave like family with each other. it's winter, and owen gets trapped with the vampires in their big old house.

the 'pretending at domesticity' was a thing in my original fic -- the vampires sometimes put blood in bowls and sit around the dining room table drinking it as if it's soup; one of them curls up in front of the fireplace and thinks about how if she looks very sweet the others might carry her upstairs like a child to her room -- and it was at least in part about... playing with this image of 'family'? none of the three vampires stays in the 'parent' or 'child' or 'sibling' or 'partner' role for very long in relation to the other two. it's supposed to be a little bit off, a little more mutable, a little of both [hey this set-up looks familiar] and [hey wait that's not supposed to happen].

and the thing my brain has snagged on re: owen is (1) figuring out how he responds to this, as someone who has no family or other long-lasting connections, and (2) where he ends up fitting into this dynamic? because. look. he's trapped in a house full of vampires. his whole job might be killing them, but he's not walking away from this one. i like the idea of him turned more than i like the idea of him drained of blood and dumped in the snow.

so. guy trapped in a house with something family-shaped but not in the traditional sense. the image of him fitting alarmingly well into that family-shape. the image of him bristling with weapons and tension still sitting down at the table to... eat? the image of all of them, three vampires and owen, settling in front of the fireplace as if to share drinks and stories, and that's where one of them sinks their teeth in his neck to make him turn.

I think they would be an amazing duo during missions. Always protecting the back of the other. I think they would be super effective as a team!

But outside of missions I think they would act like siblings haha! Always annoying each other (but in a good way) and making jokes, and laughing.

I can imagine other soldiers watching both of them like "There's the dynamic duo again..."

As time passes, and they get closer I think it would be strange to see one without the other. Like: "Hey Sparrow, where's Damien? Isn't he supposed to be with you?"

Sparrow would be more than glad to have Damien helping her fix the military vehicles, and other things!

I think they would have the deepest and strangest conversations, if someone tries to follow the conversation that person would end up having a headache trying to understand why they are talking about that subject.

Haha I would love to make both of them interact!! I love Damien so much!!💕💕

ok i've said enough about five and klaus s4 breakdown rights, now what about sparrow ben 'i don't know who i am or what i'm worth outside of my family but almost everyone i grew up with just died one after the other in a matter of days and i feel like my sole surviving sibling who was the closest thing i had to a support network left me behind to get married and now she's also missing' hargreeves

ok so we know that reggie let out the marigold after his wife died and we now know that it was so that he could do the reseting of the world thing and bring her back to life, so what im wondering is what stopped him from doing so in the original timeline and how exactly did he know the world was going to end in the original timeline? was he so disappointed in the brellies/so scared of viktor and his power that he decided that breaking the brellies down and apart was a better decision than trying to get his wife back or had this version of him just not thought of doing that yet? we know there was a hotel obsidian in the og tl bc of klaus and its very likely that there was also a hotel oblivion connected to it as well, so why did he never train the brellies to try to go in there like he tried to train the sparrows? did he just not think they were strong enough to do it? did the whole apocalypse thing just put a block in his plans? did he try to train them for it while hiding his intentions under the guise of the training being for stopping the end of the world or were his intentions actually different between timelines? can we even assume that reggie’s original plan in the original timeline was the exact same as that of the reggie’s in the new timeline? new reggie knew that the brellies were coming and seemed to belatedly build his plan around the assumption/hope that he’d be able to use the brellies as the power source for the machine in oblivion, but was that og reggie’s plan too and was it just derailed by Five disappearing and Ben dying and therefore he just abandoned it? or maybe he was only actually focused on the end of the world in the og timeline because it had viktor in it who would end the world and since the sparrow’s timeline didnt have viktor and therefore no catalyst for the apocalypse/no apocalypse at all, he able to focus on his real plans for it all? did og tl reggie have reseting the world in his sights the whole time? i think he mightve until he realized the roadblocks that the brellies posed and created over the years and he couldntve even done it after five disappeared unless he found another kid with powers so idk
