Hello HI would you be willing to explain the James Clark Ross scene you posted about, for a baby who is new to the fandom and doesn't know what's going on yet? (I would go back and rewatch it but I can't remember what episode it is in)
For sure!!! I’ve just recently gotten into learning about JCR and his life, like maybe a month ago I really got into researching him and I’m waiting my next paycheck so I can order his memoirs, so if there are any mistakes or if someone else wants to jump on this that knows more than I, feel free!
The show doesn’t do a very good job (in my opinion) of establish that Crozier and JCR were basically best friends. I’ll do a brief  historical summary as best I can! They first met on one of Perry’s expeditions to the Arctic (I can’t remember which one). JCR captained his first ship, the HMS Cove with Crozier as his second and then they went on the expedition to the Antarctic with JCR as captain of Erebus and Crozier on the Terror. After that the Franklin Expedition happens and JCR, around 1847ish starts to campaign to go look for them, basically going back on his promise to his wife to never go back to sea (we see her very very briefly in the theatre scene in episode 1)
So that scene with JCR is in episode 10, comes right after Goodsir’s death and him being eaten and right before Hickey’s big reveal. I think JCR goes to see the Barrows but Sir Barrow doesn’t come down so his nephew (???? i feel like im wrong here please correct me???) sees him instead and they talk about JCR getting ready to go search and JCR says he is hopeful about finding Francis and Sir Franklin but this dude just brushes that off and talks about how Sir Barrow is more hopeful that JCR will find the passage.
And then just the way the camera slowly moves in on JCR. Richard Sutton is so brilliant in this scene. Just the way his face falls as he realizes what is being said to him is so heartbreaking when you remember how close JCR was to Crozier. I see it as a death scene because you just feel JCR’s hope and faith just wither in a few seconds and then you are jolted back to what is happening in the Arctic, still feeling angry and heartbroken for JCR who will never really know what happened to his friend. Also, I think there is a connection to be made between JCR losing his faith in the Navy and Hickey saying fuck you to Britain and the institutions at be but that’s another meta post for another day. And then when we see JCR again, he is being told that they are all dead and gone and you want to just yell at him to turn around!! His small story in the show is so tragic.
The Terror is a show that really rewards you (painfully or sometimes delightfully) if you learn the history, you get to see all the layers and the work that went into bringing each of these figures back to life. I still think we were robbed of more JCR though :(
If you want to add to this or correct me, please do!! <3

in greek poetry and mythology, the asphodel was the flower of hades and the dead, and was sacred to persephone. in early english and french poetry, the daffodil replaced asphodel as the english "daffodil" was derived from "asphodel", with which it was commonly compared. the asphodels are robust perennial plants, built to withstand difficult conditions, and several species of which are cultivated simply for the beauty of their flowers. it is a type of lily and to victorians, this specific type meant “my regrets follow you to the grave,” perhaps indicating the exact moment these flowers are meant to be given.
#the terror#theterroredit#sir james clark ross#james clark ross#to fans of this series - anyone remember what fitz’s was...if not double check and then come back to this - WE LOVE PARALLELS BBY#anyway#i can’t look at him anymore i see jcr and i scream because we were robbed of more scenes tbh esp. with frauncis#i would have and still would pay goooodddd money to see JCR absolutely drag sir john if he ever heard the way sir john speaks to frauncis#CAN YOU IMAGINE - like JCR was a company man through and through - propriety and all and tried to play it safe too safe really#but i can’t help but imagine JCR hearing sir john or watching him berate frauncis like he does and not being able to stand by and let it go#BUT anyway - we don’t get much of JCR but what we do get is complicated bc he is a company man but he’s also just a man#someone who made his mark - however deserved or not - and could rest easy but doesn’t bc the business they’re in is cutthroat#the men in the admiralty would gladly throw him under if it meant a promotion#for almost everyone in their industry loyalty died the moment their feet returned to english soil#but not francis -no - francis is not only loyal but protective and defensive - he’s nothing like the men JCR was accustomed to and for that#he would give them the same francis - true friendship that extends beyond titles and perceptions and reputation#a real relationship unlike he’s had before & it completely floors him to feel such devotion but if there’s anyone worth losing himself for#it’s francis - and that’s why we were robbed of more scenes with them because it would’ve made his attempted rescue somuch more devastating#bc it isn’t that francis is so close and it isn’t that they’re too late - it’s everything BEFORE that makes the weight of it all too heavy#and that’s really the story of all of the characters - what happens throughout their story is enough - but compounded with their histories#and the potential of their futures and everything that was lost - it makes the tragedy - devastingly heartwretchingly tragic#and JCR know just what could have and should have been in store for francis (and the others) if they’d made it out#if he’d attempted rescue earlier - if he’d just done SOMETHING anything everything - like francis would’ve done for him#but he didn’t - doesn’t - and it is this - not fury beach or any other exploit - that is his greatest act of failure - of cowardice#and he would never let it go-never forget-that failure & cowardice and regret would follow him to his grave-a grave nowhere near francis’#my edits#my stuff#I will never be free#!!!!!!!!!!!!
