Just some HK headcanons!!

Elderbug:

This man might actually be one of the youngest characters in game? Like we know little ghost is older, and all of the knights and Quirrel are too. Like maybe only Bretta and Zote are younger? I guess also Cornifer and Iselda could be too.

He genuinely doesn’t dream, like it’s the only reason he doesn’t get infected. This is sorta based on some dialogue from when you give him that damn flower.

Hes very much a neat freak. And also has lots of childhood trauma— being born at the end of the infection will do that to you ig.

really deep sleeper honestly.

Ever since little ghost has rolled into town and befriended him he’s been feeling his age less and less(gee I wonder why that might be?)

Likes growing little succulents and other plants in his house. He cries over them when they die.

Cornifer & Iselda:

Iselda absolutely wears the pants in the relationship, but she lets her silly little nerd husband do his things because it makes him happy.

She used to be an elite guards-bug in the kingdom she and Cornifer originate from.

She and Cornifer were childhood sweethearts. Cornifer may be busy and forgetful, but he’s never once forgotten their anniversary or her birthday.

Speaking of that Cornifer goes all out for her, and I mean like all out. He once derailed a parade so it would pass by her window(he also swapped out the banners to say happy birthday Iselda)

these two are just my favorite cute couple.

Sly:

He’s a fly(obviously)

He can’t really have kids of his own, so he views all of his pupils as his children(Matt gets this from him)

The last member of a truly ancient society of nail masters/sages.

He thought the arts would die out with him before he found his pupils

Sheo is his favorite and most impressive pupil. He’s got mixed feelings about Sheo leaving behind the nails arts for painting, but he’s still supportive and believes Sheo through painting is still improving his nail skill(oddly enough he’s right).

His whole thing about loving geo/money is just a bit he’s committed to, it’s sorta his cover to hide he’s the last nail sage.

@/ch01 -> choi beomgyu. second year. our other poor main lead. poorly quick-witted. has a youtube channel by the name of cbg203. 1/4 of the band him and y/n kicked off to start early childhood (formally bassist). of all boys in the world… it’s him. it’s still him.

@/yawnzzn -> choi yeonjun. third year. somehow has a new job every other week. met beomgyu around 9th grade one day during lunch break. was the one who invited beomgyu to join the group during lunch break. and by invited, he threatened.

@/soobhour -> choi soobin. third year. ran into beomgyu in 7th grade underneath the bleachers while trying to avoid a game of dodgeball. never leaves the dorms. only really cares about anime and his pet hedgehog. oh, and the fact that he still needs physical education credits in order to complete his degree.

@/tynu -> kang taehyun. first year. beomgyu’s co-lyricist (and consultant!) met beomgyu in 7th grade writing club when they were assigned to read each other’s papers- that both happened to be rough drafts of song lyrics. acquainted with y/n as well, working the same hours as her at HYBE diner. probably the closest to normal here.

@/hyuka -> kai kamal huening. first year. moved to seoul first year of high school, quickly welcomed by the group the minute he stepped foot (quite literally. they ran into him. the minute he stepped foot). never has the right timing. never knows what’s going on either. he doesn’t even know who y/n is.

@/namunamu -> choi beomgyu. but private. both display and user names originate from his favorite childhood nickname (in courtesy of y/n, of course). only there to 1. complain about his “girlfriend”, 2. complain about his best friends, 3. complain about y/n, and 4. tweet cryptic song lyrics.

I’ve seen some people complaining about the remix of Color Pulse, but I think it’s really interesting on a meta level. Time in the Splatoon world is still moving forward. Both Pearl and Marina have aged in the game AND in real life! Pearl is 26 now! She’s nearing 30! Of course her cadence and rhythm will have changed! Same for Marina! And behind the scenes the voice actors have aged 7 years too.

That’s a novelty of Splatoon that makes it feel so realistic and vibrant! Things do change over time! The hub worlds change, the shops change, the characters change… this new remix reflects that change.

But what’s more interesting to me is how their new song “We’re so back!” shows how much both of them have matured. Pearl in particular is less energetic and bouncy than she is for Color Pulse. Don’t get me wrong, she’s still spitting bars and doing high kicks… but there’s now a much more refined and reserved attention to her dancing than we’ve seen from her in the past. It’s almost Squid Sisters level of choreography. I think that reflects her maturity.

Likewise with Marina, she’s much more active than she was in Color Pulse. She’s no longer stuck in the background occasionally going back to her keyboard during the song, now she plays a keytar and dances in sync with Pearl. It seems like she’s less shy and much more comfortable with herself. And that makes sense narratively too since at the start of Splatoon 2 she was sort of hiding her Octoling roots, and by Splatoon 3 the Inklings and Octolings are living their best lives openly together!

I’m not saying you have to enjoy the remix. Personally I prefer the energy of the original song better. But I don’t think that the new version is terrible either. It’s just different. Because they’re different! You can really see how much they’ve grown in these past 7 years. And that’s ultimately a good thing!
