putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023

what do you mean by pajama week?

'pajama week' is a term coined by dnp in 2016 where they don't do any work/check emails/post regular content for an extended period. it started after the american leg of tatinof (x) but now we pretty much only use it in reference to the time between the holidays and the first upload of the new year (usually mid january...they use the term 'week' in the same way they use the word "daily" so its more like pajama 3 weeks)

pajama week is basically an understood silent agreement that dnp are gonna be mostly quiet and we're not going to ask for signs of life until they're ready to emerge from their cave

Petra's awoken guardian-specific dialogue in the Chamber of Starlight this week has me feeling some kind of way. I didn't get a screenshot but after reminiscing about all the ceremonies she used to attend there, she sighs and says something like "I wish you could remember it."

For all the angst-ing she's done about Uldren and Crow, she also feels that for us, at least to some extent. Maybe Mara does too. Maybe Uldren did, when we met him before he died. For centuries the reef awoken have been seeing their friends die and come back wrong, same face, but no memories, no convictions, no nothing. Petra knew us before, at least in some capacity, and now we're just a living weapon she gets to co-wield like once a year, when our weird work schedule for some foreign government agency just so happens to send us back to the Dreaming City, our home, where we used to attend ceremonies and sing in the Chamber of Starlight alongside her. No wonder Uldren resented guardians so much. Dramatic irony is such a bitch

Sure, I'll add a few. (Redacted since my google account is my full name.) Also remember that y'all also got the benefit of my author's notes, but I'm not giving my mom the AO3 copy because over my dead body does she look at that account. I'm giving her a document copy. So a lot of the comments will likely be details you guys already got in either a post or author's note.

^^^ This one is written specifically because my mom, like me, has been going to Big Bend National Park since she was young. A member of my family has gone there nearly every single year since....1965? lol. So it's a fun tidbit for her to know I was thinking of it while writing this. That is also why she gets to read it, because the moment I opened my mouth about writing it I basically had to. I don't always talk about my writing with her but I really wanted to talk about this one. So! By talking about it I just made the decision for myself that I'd allow her to read it. She is....very excited haha. And I am too? I mean I think I am going to send it to her and then just immediately go back to my apartment so I don't have to be in the same house as her while she's reading it LOL. The embarassment of people who know you too closely reading your things etc etc. But I'm very proud of this story and I don't think she realizes how good of a writer I can be. She knows I'm good at it (like, she's read my essays and newspaper stories) but not how I handle fiction.

All of my planning and worrying didn't matter because he went on his own last night at home and it was traumatic as fuck for me and Selene both.

#dont read the tags if you dont want any details #he didnt seem that bad yesterday #he was swollen but he was still up and moving around on his own #he even took all his meds and ate a full bowl of food without any trouble #we called the vet to ask them to call us back to discuss options yesterday around 4 #vet called us back around 7 to discuss new meds to keep him comfortable while we got home euth set up for him #and we agreed ro go in today to pick them up for him and then got off the phone #and like five minutes later Banana suddenly started panting hard #so me and Selene sat on the floor with him trying to figure out what was wrong #and he started having a seizure which we're used to so we were keeping him company waiting for it to pass like normal #only it didnt #he suddenly died in my arms instead while I cried and screamed and tried to get him to start breathing again #selene call d the vet and told them we were bringing him in for an emergency visit and i was just sitting on the floor numb #cuz i knew the vet was too far away to be any help and even if they werent it wouldn't matter #he was already gone #he was gone so fast and I wasnt ready #it was so fucking horrible #im never going to be able to get the way he looked before he collapsed out of my head #my poor old man #that was not how it was supposed to go im so sorry
