you know that babies drop toys to see if gravity still works (it always does) and you (empty and transparent) (a synonym for yourself) do the same thing (fevered retreading of the same ideas) (writing the same poem around the same empty space) but you won’t admit it (a deniable language of correlation) (spoken, it becomes causation) (you know enough about tragedy in art to know that your life is neither) you’re still hoping that you (a body hitting the ground) can fool yourself (the ground that the body hits) into expecting anything other than the fall (the red line between desire and habit) (shapes in the receding sky) (the line between i want you and if i won’t admit i don’t want you, isn’t that enough?) (you know it’s not) because there will always be blood (the red line) (does the wound beget the poem or is it the other way around?) and you (weaving desire out of nothing so you can spend tomorrow night unweaving) know there’s no credit just for participating (leaving a space between lines) (pretending no one knows what goes there) so you’ll have to commit to living someday

Adelina Castillo de la Cruz is one of the infamous de la Cruz’s who live within the floating sky-city of Ascension. The family is cursed with mysterious afflictions the likes of which no doctor or priest can cure nor banish, and it’s said even one encounter with them can pass it to the unlucky bystander. To avoid trouble, Adelina hides behind her father’s surname and hides her affliction in layers of clothes.
But then her uncle goes missing the same night the Rot –– a mysterious entity that’s been slowly consuming other sky-cities –– first makes its presence known in Ascension. With her city and family in a panic, Adelina goes on a quest to discover the reason behind his disappearance and how it relates to the Rot. Joining her are her cousin, Emilio; Carlos, an orphan boy with mysterious ties to her family; and Salvador, an angel questioning his own faith. Plagued by their own curses and with time running out, what they will discover about themselves and their world may just be Ascension’s undoing.
CHARACTERS ;
☞ Adelina Castillo de la Cruz ; 25, with no life plan or goal. likes learning for the sake of learning and hates being asked what she’s doing with her life. hides from her responsibilities by going on adventures around the city. her curse makes her appearance difficult to remember and fuzzy, like looking at something from the corner of your eye.
☞ Emilio de la Cruz Sanchez ; 18, Adelina’s cousin and an avid scholar. avoids all forms of confrontation and decision-making. suffers from a curse which causes him to have a limited amount of words he can speak per day.
☞ Carlos Aguilar ; 18, orphaned at a young age with no clue who his parents are except for his name. currently lives at one of the smaller parishes in Ascension as ward and trainee to Padre. suffers from a curse which causes him to get lost often or to lose things. do not trust with a map.
☞ Salvador ; 1000s, one of the angels designated as a watcher to oversee the humans in Ascension. has a fondness for books, coffeeshops, and is allergic to sleep. if given the choice, he’d rather stay home. suffers from an unknown affliction.

what is it to weild a red dying sun within the stratified layers of your palm?
to feel the cold burn into your bone marrow, to sense the blooming end of something great buried beneath your skin, to serve as a vessel, dabs of viburnum on each pulse point.

i think a lot lately of the trauma of broken and toxic friendship. how the wounds are never an amputation but a festering thing, and even if you sever cleanly the phantom limb remains, and in the loneliest hours between late night and early morning it continues to bleed.
and then someone new comes into your life and they do that thing. and you think oh, oh. because you can recognise the pattern and the ache is back in full force. that’s the first warning sign and you should run.
it never gets better.

Ways to stay motivated
Now that I’m being held accountable to write bits of my story once a week, I wanted to make a list of tactics that help me stay motivated or pick up the story. Even if it’s just a line or two. I’m an incredibly slow writer even on the best of days.
Procrastination and emotion ; this article is really useful when considering how to deal with procrastination, I make a habit of reading bits of it whenever I feel like I‘m procrastinating a lot. By procrastinating, we’re avoiding a task with the assumption that the task won’t feel good, and that means we’re missing out on any feelings of, for example, accomplishment or success.
Music ; it helps immerse myself into the story, I have a carefully curated playlist specific just for writing my current project. These are not songs that are necessarily character fitting songs or atmospheric, just a mixture of songs that make me want to write and have become (by association) linked to my current writing project. Sometimes I listen to one on repeat rather than the whole playlist, it depends on my mood.
Poetry ; rather than prose I read poetry. If I open my document and find my mind totally blank, I open up a poetry book and read a couple of poems. The important thing is not to get sidetracked with reading so I stick to two (longuish) poems at once. As for what poet, I think that is subjective, currently I have Rilke nearby and just flip open a page and read.
Exercise ; this doesn’t need to be like a vigorous work out, it can be just taking a walk or doing some stretches in the living room. The main thing is that you get out of the room you use to write and look at something else for a while. You can also use it to make it a routine that leads you into writing, for example: wake up, stretches, shower, cup of tea, then writing.
Routine ; some people work well with routines, for me it can be a hit or miss. What I’ve been doing is to keep an eye on what time I feel most productive and note down if it tends to be a particular hour or activity before it. For example, early mornings are just not good for writing write now, but around 11pm my brain gets a kickstart of inspiration. What caused this? Apparently a shower and a light snack (as well as the fact everyone else has gone to bed by this hour) clicks in my brain as ‘writing time’. Now I try to shower and snack earlier so I can get my brain to go into writing mode. It’s not ideal since I get sleepy and wake up early but it is better than nothing! I actually prefer mornings for writing but it’s not working right now so, ADAPT. EVOLVE. OVERCOME. In that way, I can follow those steps to get my brain ‘in the mood’.
You don’t need to do all of these, one or two might work on some days, on another it might be something else entirely. I hope this is useful to anyone who is struggling. The important thing is to not give up, good luck writing!

what i want is simple and impossible. the quiet, thoughtless intimacy of sorting my laundry from someone else’s. peppermint tea cooling in the evening, offered without asking. someone to hold my hand when the waves hit and to search for my body in the dark silt and spilled-oil rainbows by the roadside when the floodwaters recede. but also
i want to live and i don’t want to do it alone. i want olive oil in a hot pan and a knife in kind hands, chopping vegetables together in the kitchen after sundown. linoleum floors that look golden in the light. keys in the door, footsteps on the stairs familiar by sound alone. we’ll wear each other’s shoes and walk in the rain and come home to do the dishes together. find the words that mean love without having to say it. wear out every endearment until our names sound like honest prayer.
and i do. i do know what i want. it comes back to me sometimes, simple and impossible and heavy in my hands like the tide. i don’t want miles between me and anyone who knows my name. in ten years, i want the songs to sound different even if the words never change. i won’t be 23 and lonely, crying at the thought of making dinner for someone else and sitting next to them while we eat. yeah, darling, i know. nothing is forever, but i think i could teach someone to cook and i think there are still stars to watch somewhere and i think maybe love is the only thing in this burning mess of a world that’s worth deliverance.

I want to pull out my eyelashes, I want to pick up the smashed glass and clean up the spilt wine, I want to bury all the shattered remains of this day in the empty plot of land at the end of the lane and plant rosemary and rue over it all, I want to paint my nails gold and buy oranges and sit under the sun, I want to die before my brother, I want more poems, I want to go to therapy, I want to break a bone or fall on my head so I have something to blame, I want to slip something sharp and jagged into my heart, I want to wash all this grave dirt off my hands and clean up the wine, I want to pick up all that glass so no one can step on it ever again, I want to be ophelia drop-dead-pretty or hermione stone-cold, I want my skin to turn hard and never crack, never crack, I am sick of picking up shattered things, I want I want, I want

Greetings. Halloween is nearing so I give you all the fourth prompt set from the wearwnet. What is horror, really? What scares others doesn’t really scare me so this entire prompt list if based exclusively off my nightmares. This week I have seven prompts for a slightly bizarre take on fear inducing materials straight from my 6th dimension. Enjoy.
The atmosphere had just broken, and pieces of sky fall towards the horizon. As your character wipes away a jelly-like clear substance from their face that had fallen from above, a structure appears were the sky used to be. This happens to be the scaffolding of the constellations and everyone around them wails at eminent disaster.
The population of this world knows that they have to be aware of when they hear a siren. Following it, a beast will appear from thin air and cast a light on mass gatherings of people and turn them all inside out. Everyone knows that the siren calls for instant evacuation and large gatherings of people means death.
After trespassing into a boarded-up house in the forest, the character leaves feeling they are experiencing a fading feeling of possessing two minds that are ghosting over each other.
The moon explodes in the sky and begins to float away in two halves. Nothing feels right in the world anymore and something strange is happening to the oceans.
A girl punctures her bike wheel 45 kms away from the main city. As she waits out the night in an abandoned basement storage facility, she finds a woman skinned and frozen in an old musty freezer. The fridge light flickers and she is alone with a frozen body, so she decides to thaw her out and finds that she’s alive. The woman has something to tell her.
Character is in their own house, when they begin to notice that extra rooms they have never known of before are revealing themselves all over the property over the days. There is something eerie with these new rooms, as well as something alluring.
The rules of this reality is a puzzle to solve from birth, people cannot keep themselves from solving it. However, when reality is fully understood, the mind cannot fathom it and wishes to cease existing in this domain.
Anyone is welcome to use these prompts, and if there are any requests for prompt sets, let me know. You can tag your writing with ‘wearywnet’ so we can see.
Enjoy writing
