are we doing spidersonas this time around because i personally think we should
(anyway you could NOT be a mt major who is a super hero because they care WAY too much about attendance but being fat in musical theatre can actually substitute in as a canon event because it’s similarly traumatic)

the tragic mundanity of kitty's death is something that cannot be overstated, nor can I even completely comprehend it. the way they just effortlessly created the heartbreaking reveal, the way the other ghosts get so invested and play at investigating her death just for something to do, and then once they realize the truth of it, it settles in that a real person died. it's not just a fun mystery, it was a woman's life. cut short by random happenstance. and the fact that kitty is so overwhelmingly positive about it, instantly reconciling with the fact that if it hadnt happened exactly how it did, she wouldn't be where she is. and, more importantly to her, alison wouldn't be there either. and the fact that the show itself and kitty in character cover it up with comedy, attempting to websling and smiling because she's "like spider-man!" yknow. like.. the way we all, audience and other ghosts included, thought kitty's death was a lot more dramatic and full of intrigue and we suspected foul play and her sister being heinous and. no, there just happened to be a spider on the pineapple and she just happened to pick it up first. there was no grand design, there was no attempt on her life, she was not part of some terrible plot. it was just life. she was just a normal person. and then she died.

I think the thing that makes me so mad about Peter B is that his arc in ATSV is SO close to that of a bigoted parent its insane
"I know I taught you how to websling, and had a baby because of you, and I love you BUT you're an anomaly who needs to be fixed :) '
It's that 'I love you BUT' logic. That half-assed 'compassion' that hides callousness and hate behind 'parental advice'.
I love you BUT you're gay and going to hell.
I love you BUT there's something wrong with you
I love you BUT you're broken and what happens to you happens to you
Like Peter B loved Miles enough to mentor him and teach him and have Mayday but somehow he still thinks Miles is an anomaly. He thinks Miles shouldn't be there and that it's the multiverse being 'wrong'.
Like I know he's fighting for Miles now but I genuinely hope he still doesn't think of Miles as an anamoly cause that whole -
"I'll help you and support you but I still think you're the result of a something going deeply wrong and technically shouldn't be here but now that you're here you should be happy either way." - attitude?
PAIIIINNNN. The PAIN.

Poor Scar failed at being the 'Hotguy' Grian needed in Gri's episode today...Poor little hero is in his washed up/out of practice arc now.
He's lost his power with the bow. He needs his sidekick Cuteguy to comfort him lol
He's just going through his spiderman arc. (ykno, when he loses his mojo so like he couldn't websling and all that stuff)
good thing he's got Cuteguy there to help him :3c

Long overdue Gwen Stacy fanart that I'd been chipping away at for a bit! I love how she does ballet poses when she webslings. It's so pretty!
Also I didn't want to draw her in my usual style, I wanted to match the Spiderman Spiderverse style. Hope I did it justice!

Working on a new design for Bodaway since I feel like his original is too human for the path he's going down now. I'll still keep the human design though and let that be his secondary form. At this point, the only self-insert thing about him are his Indigenous features lol.
Bodaway's primary form is inspired by D'vorah but will have some of my own little twists to it. I'm giving him either four or six eyes to somewhat fit his spider cryptid (since I feel like calling him a drider wouldn't be too accurate, idk y'all tell me) self better. I've also decided that his lips will have chelicerae of sorts that helps him catch/eat his prey, but at the cost of him being able to communicate like a human would. Instead he speaks in a series of clicks and chirps when he resides in his spider form. Because of this his brothers have to learn his language to better understand what Bodaway is trying to ask or say.
Bodaway's arms and legs, well body in general will be rather hairy since I'm trying to base him off a huntsman spider. For the monster enjoyers, yes the fur is soft but no he is not warm. Like Syzoth, Bodaway is cold-blooded but doesn't need to seek out warmth, but has to so he can avoid being in constant diapause. This means that he's either bundled up in thick material or he's near Kuai Liang a lot for warmth.
Here's where the inspiration from D'vorah comes in. Like D'vorah, Bodaway walks on two legs, but spiders have eight limbs, to fix that he has four spider-like limbs that can sprout and retract from his back.
Despite having six eyes, Bodaway has poor vision in all of them, a trait that carries over into his human form, and without glasses, he often relies on touch or vibration to get around. Because of this, he's trained his spider senses to tingle in certain ways whenever a specific person approaches him. That's how he's always able to tell when Bi-Han or is Kuai Liang approaching him versus when a villain is approaching him. Villains all have one tingle pattern that registers in Bodaway's brain as there are too many to try and decipher. Only his close friends and family get their own unique tingle, though he won't ever tell a soul about that. That's too soft and mushy of him.
Having fused with a huntsman spider his fur is mostly grays and browns, as is his skin. This fur also plays a huge role in helping him navigate the world in his natural form. Huntsman spiders don't make webs but do produce silk, which is what Bodaway uses to websling.
Like the huntsman spider, Bodaway isn't aggressive and prefers to find a civil end to conflict before fighting or even biting his foe. However, if push comes to shove, Bodaway does possess his own venom that unlike the spider itself, Bodaway's venom packs a nasty punch. While possible, Bodaway has never injected enough of his venom into a person to kill them.
Because of his poor eyesight, Bodaway likes to be around semi-lit rooms so that he isn't bumping into everything. If he has to go somewhere dark, then he has to have a dull light on hand. He doesn't like bright lights but can tolerate them.
His poor brothers have oftentimes come across Bodaway eating weird things, be it other spiders, or even some of the mice that got inside the temple. While it's unsettling, Bi-Han and Kuai Liang understand it's just part of Bodaway's nature.

A secret trait that can make or break cool characters, Ft. Across The Spider-Verse. An effortpost.
Intro
Until recently, I did not have strong opinion on Issa Rae’s Jessica Drew, since she was a side-character with barely any screentime - I youtubed “across the spiderverse but it's only jess” to get a number and people didn’t care about her enough to make that video.
Most of the discourse surrounding her was either racism/sexism (why the fuck are those people even watching spider-verse) or people wanting her to do the mommy who keeps the angry man in check cliché.
Personally, I liked how they averted that with a minor character well enough, so I didn’t bother engaging. Spider-verse does the cliché-baiting-aversion thing a lot, for example with Hobie and cheap love triangles, and it's great every time.
BUT, apparently the art book says that she was designed to be cool and they “knew she’d be a fan-favourite”. Now, “cool” is subjective, but “cool fan-favourite” is not and, even compared to someone who was barely in the most recent movie - Peni Parker - Jess is embarrassingly less popular.
And the thing is, a lot of the complaints I've seen about her coolness (which are not from racists) talk about stuff like how she's a minor side character, are pregnancy discourse, or are like "how is she expected to be cool when she's in the same movie as hobie".
I wrote a whole thing talking about all those things and more in tremendous detail, but it was way too long for a single text post - plus, it was very specifically about Jess rather than the concept of a cool character.
TL;DPost: Pavitr exists for like a very short amount of time sharing scenes with Hobie and he's still more popular than Jess except for resource-rich countries Sweden and Venezuela.
So, I thought that out the many traits that make a character cool (competence, agency, confidence...) I'd very specifically talk about the most overlooked one, which Jess lacks, and to avoid falling for sacrificial trash bait I’ll only use women or POC as examples (except when discussing two historical examples).
Luckily, Spiderverse itself provides us with plenty of examples, such as Gwen (Irish girl), Pavitr (Indian guy), and Hobie (British).
Transgressiveness
The concept of cool itself, in the modern day, is tied to things like punk subculture; to quote Robert Christgau,
Hippies were rainbow extremists; punks are romantics of black-and-white. Hippies forced warmth; punks cultivate cool.
Fundamentally, one of the if not the meaning of the word cool, is something that infringes rules, norms or expectations in a way that pleases us.
This is true for every medium:
Samus is cool because she’s a girl wearing power armor in an 80s game.
Hollow Knight’s Hornet (black female spider-person) is at her coolest when she saves the Knight from the Cast-Off shell and webslings away.
Millennium’s Lisbeth Salander is cool because she’s a psychologically tortured woman who lives on the edge of the law but never truly hurts those who don’t deserve it.
Since I write 1984 fanfic: Julia is cool because she habitually avoids the rules set by the Party, fully knowing that it’s not going to end well and choosing not to dwell on it.
Obviously, it’s even true outside of fiction: gender, as an adjective, is often used in progressive circles to mean “blurs gender lines in a visually appealing way”; and it’s actually true in real life, though I can probably not make any noncontroversial examples.
If you look at the movies themselves, Gwen primarily has a trans(heh)gressive aesthetic: her haircut was not yet overdone in 2018, she’s in a punk rock band, and she’s Gwen Stacy but alive.
Pavitr is transgressive because he’s Spider-man and his life isn’t shit yet, and he rubs that in your face with confidence (the exaggerated swagger of an Indian teen), while getting distracted with menial stuff and still keeping up with his responsibilities fine.
Note that this “kid who doesn’t really try and aces all their tests anyway” energy is important, because if he got distracted shipping Gwiles and actually lost track of the Spot, then that wouldn't be transgressive in a pleasing way, that’d be transgressive in a frustrating way - the "kid who slacks off on the group project" way.
Hobie, which is widely agreed upon to be the coolest character, has - obviously - punk aesthetics and his dramatic entrance breaking down an energy barrier with his anarchy-powers. His intro monologue is a break from norm - “I was bitten by a – wouldn’t you like to know?”, he’s british, and doesn’t believe in consistency. Or comedy, but that’s just a joke.
And most importantly, his actions are transgressive. Every step of the way, he sets Miles up to beat Miguel, or he’s working toward making sure Gwen still has a watch after she’s exiled from the spider-society. This also, incidentally, makes him likeable - which isn’t a necessary part of being cool, but sure as hell does help.
To bring up the historical examples I mentioned before: The Punisher breaks the rules in a way that appeals to his, uh, target audience. He kills dozens of people because that’s darker and edgier and I swear comic books are not for children mom.
Darth Vader is constantly abusing his officers and blowing up planets; until The Emperor shows up he’s generally the one setting the rules.
And no, Doomguy is not a character, he’s a player insert. I love killing demons as much as anyone, but don’t bullshit me with “oh but he’s cool”.
Generally, I think, we can put character actions on a political compass of “follows the rules vs makes their own rules” and “in a likeable vs unlikeable way”. “Makes their own rules in a likeable way” is the coolest quadrant, while “follows the rules in an unlikeable way” is the least cool.
By the way, this is why cool characters are often funny - comedy is built on the unexpected. A lot of Hobie’s lines aren’t laugh-out-loud funny, but they’re “Heh. That’s kinda funny” funny, such as “Hobie you’re not helping” “Good”.
Jessica Drew first intervenes not out of her own free will - like Gwen, Miguel, Pavitr, Hobie, Peter B., et cetera but because she’s called in. Her aesthetics are like… She looks like my aunt if she put on dumb fucking glasses.
She proceeds to do nothing except for ask if Miguel could pretty please let Gwen on board. Do note that she 100% defers the decision to the man. In every other interaction, she’s just sorta there, acting as a second-tier antagonist unquestionably following Miguel’s orders or conceding Gwen enough time to speedrun Super Mario Odissey.
This is even when she knows better - she knows Miles is much less dangerous than Spot, because she participated in a conversation where Gwen tried to brush him off as a villain of the week but didn’t fall for it.
This is terrible for coolness, because it's also stripping her of agency - forcing her to rely on confidence and competence that don't have much space to shine.
She is actively following bad norms, even though she knows them to be bad, and consistently opposing the main characters when doing so to obey the actually interesting antagonist, Miguel.
And yes, a lot of these criticisms can be levelled at Peter B - who could probably have done more to back up Gwen in the go-home-machine room, for instance - but Peter wasn’t specifically designed to be cool. Peter is written to be a dad who doesn’t want huge status quo shakeups, and that’s who he is.
If Jess had been designed specifically to be cool, and had been well-designed, she'd be transgressive or make up for her lack of transgressiveness somehow. But she wasn't designed to be cool, she was designed to explain Miguel taking Gwen in and the coolness was added on to make her a less obvious plot device.
That said, BWEE MOTORCYCLE WHEEL ON FACE

💕 twin hug twin hug twi-
send 💕 to pull byan into a hugㅤㅤ∘ ˚ ( accepting )
Tumblr media
ㅤㅤ" wh— "ㅤquestion cut off by their own surprised grunt when peter tugs them in against his chest, byan simply stands there, stunned and confused. they're not sure what they were expecting when he approached without a word and only kept getting closer rather than stopping at any point but, somehow, it wasn't a hug. hugs have always felt a little... alien. they aren't the sort of thing people have ever just given them out of nowhere.
Tumblr media
ㅤㅤ" th'fuck man, you websling yourself headfirst into a street light while you were out today, or what? "ㅤrather than sounding hostile or annoyed, the question is more bemused. sure, they've been affectionate with peter here and there as they've gotten to know each other better and have slowly grown into the closeness of being twins (which they arguably should have had since birth), but they've never gone so far as an actual hug before. it's odd, and though they do consider, as they stand there with their arms held stubbornly at their side, shoving their brother away as though his touch burns... they make no actual move to do so.
ㅤㅤ" you're gonna make me stay up all night just t' make sure y'don't fall asleep with a concussion, aren'tcha? "ㅤamusement at their own joke tugging at the corner of their mouth, byan's arms slowly raise, but they hover on either side of peter for a moment, hesitating as they consider which route to take. ...it'd be so easy to knock him back on his ass right now... in the end, however, they make the decision to wrap their arms awkwardly around his back, where one of their hands gives him a couple gentle, if vaguely patronizing, pats between the shoulders.ㅤ" guess it's lucky i shoved a bunch'a energy drinks into my bag while i was at the convenience store, huh? UGAHGHGHGHOUUAUAUGHGH these episodes are so good theyre everythign to me !!!!!!
episodes 2 and 3 thoughts:
this is kitty's season fr she is SHINING like she DESERVES I'm obsessed she's such a silly billy and a sweetheart
her thinking she was pregnant was sooo fucking funny, making robin rub her feet ajdlfajsd
"you haven't eaten anything because you're dead and your boobs hurt because you've been wearing a corset for the past 400 years" "those could be a coincidence"
when she thought the baby kicked and she called cap over to feel it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm SOBBING!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S HER DAD!!!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!! THIS IS THE ONLY THING IM GONNA TALK ABOUT!!!!!!!!
speaking of cap, mediating the argument b/w julian and pat. such a cutie pie.
"now then now then then now now then now" wtf is wrong with you babygirl. i love you.
giving a touching speech about soliders standing together regardless of where they came from? robin talking about how before there were map lines and country names, they were all just people? I'm crying. again.
THOMAS ATTRIBUTING THE POEM TO FANNY???? HELLO!!!! the growth the character growth the learning the development the tenderness the FAMILY!
barclay having alison's name in his phone as annabel. that's hysterical.
obi moment!!!!
ok I'm both relieved and disappointed that eleanor didnt kill kitty. I mean. yeah, it makes sense that she didn't. it would be a tad dark. but her promise to be a better sister was really sweet, if a little insincere feeling.
but when theyre looking for the bite and thomas asks to take her hands and she says "are you going to kiss them?" like! okay! kitmas real! I didn't believe in you before but I'm seeing the matrix.
HER TRYING TO WEBSLING WAS SO FUCKIGN FUNNY IT TOOK ME SO ABACK I HAD TO REWIND IT DJFSLDKFJ
"it's not going to work!" "I just need to practice!"
also!! fanny's "that's what I admired about you, if you want my room you only need to ask" like! her admitting she can see alison's strengths and giving her the push she needed to commit to what she believed in... they're such a fucking family it's unreal.
but fr mike being nervous about being a bad dad and barclay saying "when they make you proud, tell them" I'm tearing up. that was so tender my chest hurts.
and "I'm going to go home and tell bunny I love her" like you did it! you broke ghosts down to its bare essentials! it's the love!
