sometimes the legacy starts with you
after eddie got back from Afganistan, still healing from the helicopter crash, he decided to try and figure what he wanted to do with his life now that he was back stateside. and it is a... struggle shannon had asked him to move to california, get out of El Paso in exchange for LA. and she wanted to be by her mother's side as she fought cancer, again. but eddie wasn't ready, he was still recovering mentally from what had happened to him overseas -- making big decisions like that wasn't easy. so, she made it easy, she left. shannon packed her bags, wrote a note, and left. leaving eddie alone to raise christopher all by himself, though he felt it was simply payback for him leaving her alone when is took up that second tour. it took him two years, a blowout fight with his parents, and his son telling him that he missed him for eddie to decide what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. he wanted to start a ranch. it was something he'd be sitting on since he was a teenager. and when he was little, he thought cowboys were so cool. so he dug into his research, saving every penny he could from his three jobs and even dropping one to pick up a job as a ranch hand for a small ranch just outside of town. well, it was just his luck that the owner had no one to leave his land to. his son be a police officer in Dallas and his two daughters going into professions far from ranch owning. so he taught eddie everything he needed to know before retiring and selling eddie the land at a fraction of the deserving price. then he moved to Galveston with his wife, always being near the phone in case eddie needed something. and that was all he needed, all eddie needed to start a legacy.

Textural Collage two, more stitching & dowels.
I used the left over materials to stitch together another portrait using the same thread and techniques, using the pink stitching to support and hold up disabled people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also attached them to wooden dowels so that they can hang properly and not wrap too much. The weight of the fabric causes the portrait to warp a little bit, but I kind of like this imperfection and I think it matches nicely with the handcrafted, personal theme.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had the idea of adding red stitching over a transparent fabric to stitch in words or phrases that convey negative experiences of have a physical disability in terms of appearance. I trailed with red thread to convey that hatred/self-loathing that is experienced by disabled people due to the influence of able-bodiedness in beauty standards.
Tumblr media
The stitching was not working well at all. The fabric kept ripping and the stitching was nowhere near as clean as a wanted it. Also layering it over the portrait just felt wrong. It completely took away from the messaged that I want to portray with these portraits, that despite public perception there is beauty in the appearance if disability. Adding this negative veil to the portrait, removed this message and creates more of a focus on the self-esteem of disabled people and it felt like it was creating pity, which I do not want to do. The portraits are stronger and provide a more positive message without this.

Bisan is calling for another global strike!
I saw some posts just outlining Jan 21st, and wanted to clarify that Bisan has called for a full seven days of action.
What a global strike would look like is:
calling in sick to work
purchasing bare essentials ahead of the week so you can observe the general boycott of goods / buying as little as you genuinely can
putting in a concerted effort to elevate Palestinian voices and make it clear that this strike is in support of a permanent ceasefire!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those who will have to purchase necessary goods during this time, please observe the brands that the BDS movement is asking us to boycott!
Tumblr media
♢♢♢
Right now is also a good time to mention some better uses for your money during this week.
Available e-sims in Gaza are running low!!
Mirna El Helbawi and her team are working round the clock to continue to connect Palestinians as Israel does its best to cut them off from the rest of the world.
You can learn how to purchase and send e-sims here, and below you’ll find a list of what is currently needed (the areas in brackets indicate what region you should select to buy e-sims in).

--
CareforGaza is an organisation that does verifiably good work, distributing supplies directly to Palestinian families.
They have a Gofundme set up at the moment, but because of Gofundme’s poor track record regarding refusing to transfer funds to Palestinians, I’d recommend continuing to donate directly to their PayPal here.

Good luck to all of you. Don't turn away from Palestine!

Draft Writing & Studiosity Feedback
I've been working on writing the first two chapters throughout the semester through the class activities and my own time.
Positioning
I wanted the positioning to talk directly through my experience. Although the actual publication has more of a focus on parenting and my parent's perspective, I want the reader of the exegesis to understand my experience in an emotional way. I chose to write about it in a more vague way and for the reader to not focus on my physical appearance so I didn't mention I only had one hand until the end of the chapter. I quite like the idea of writing it like this. I feel like being physically disabled, people tend to focus on that rather than anything else and sometimes I've felt like people only notice that and forget about everything else. My physical disability, although a huge part of my identity, is not all I am and I don't want the physicality of my disability to come across because that is not the focus of this project.
Tumblr media
The main points of Studiosity feedback I got for this chapter were small things like I need to work on my comma placement and use of contractions. Otherwise the feedback for this specific chapter was positive, that I structured it well and used nice language.
Feedback
To maintain an academic tone, avoid using contractions
It can be seen as informal to begin a sentence with a coordinating conjunction, like 'and' or 'but'. Consider changing your wording or linking the sentences with a comma.
A comma should be used after introductory words, phrases, and clauses in a sentence.
Your ideas are presented logically and are easy to follow.
Well-structured topic sentence.
The language used in this paragraph is formal and clear, which is positive.
Contextual Knowledge
I have been finding this chapter harder to write and structure. It has taken me a while to figure out what areas I want to talk to since there are so many things I think are relevant. Things also seem to link together a lot and I need to properly figure out what things would be sectioned within each other.
The main things I want to talk about in this chapter are
The social model of disability
Ableism
Public perception of disability
Fear of becoming disabled/disability
Self-esteem and disability
I'm not super set on all of these as I'm unsure how relevant they will end up being to my piece of work and I feel I need to do more research into these topics first.
I started my chapter talking to the social model of disability since I know that this is the concept I follow when talking about disability. The social model views disability as the barriers put in place in society rather than the abilities of the disabled individual. It has always been the lens I view my disability through so I felt it was important to introduce this concept. I didn't have much of a chance to expand on other points of my contextual review since I have been sick.
Tumblr media
The feedback on this chapter was similar to the first, saying that I need to work on my punctuation and grammar but my work is well-structured.
Feedback
To keep your work formal, refrain from using phrases like ‘In this essay’ or ‘I will be...'
A semicolon should be used to join two related sentences together, before a connecting word like 'however', or to separate long items in a list that already uses commas. Please review your use of punctuation.
Make sure to capitalise proper nouns as well as the first word in a sentence.
There is good cohesion in your sentences, and I can see they flow on logically from one to the next.
The wording flows smoothly in this paragraph, making it a easy to read.

With the condition that I was sadly in the past week, I am proud of what I have done. Yes, there is more I need to write in my contextual but the points I want to discuss is something I want to talk to Tatiana about to strength a bit more. And see if they are the right fit. Overall I am happy with the topic I chose to write on as it kept me super interested and allowed me to learn lots more.

Reflection on presentation 7.2/7.3
The presentation didn’t exactly bomb but I felt like I wanted to say a lot more but didn’t have enough time. I structured it in a way that wasn’t the best for short timed presentations.
Feedback I got during my presentation/time in front of class: Class mates had brought up how I intent to incorporate imagery or illustrations in to the spreads of the publication. I answered advising them that there are elements of messages and themes in the form of image making. I felt as if I focused so much more on the talking side of the presentation and kept getting that confused with the imagery presented on the screen. The tutors had expressed how I need to keep pushing this project further. I will be focusing on this part during the break, I want to push this publication to the potential it has. I love the idea of turning it in to campaign, or even an online social movement. It has the language and potential to do that. I will be analysing all the feedback given to come to a clear decision in going forward.

Week 7 - Research
In today's class we printed out our positioning and research. I really enjoy this class as reading my peers WIP was enlightening in ways. I enjoyed identifying the tone of voice as they were unique to the person. I amended their work and suggested ways of writing and they did the same. I was glad with the outcome from this class as I found it to be beneficial.

Things to do over time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just wrote down some things that I want to do over the time yes it looks like a lot but some is research and investigating existing ideas/products. I divided into the different sections/things that I need to do/want to do. Feel confident now that I have written down what are things I want to do. Now just need to get stuck into it. This will assure me to be where I want to be after the break when I return to uni for week 8.

liking dnd is so funny because yeah you play the actual game sometimes but mostly you just think about the game and watch other people play the game and slowly go insane thinking about how much you wish you could play the game and hoping that buying more shiny rocks will fix everything

Educational Children's Books
The Bad Seed
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bad seed uses a character to teach children that you can make mistakes and do bad things without being a bad person. It's about teaching children that they can make changes to their behaviour. The illustration style is really friendly and welcoming. I like how the illustrator has used light to portray positivity.
Don't Touch My Hair
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This book teaches children about Black hair, what's rude to ask and how to treat those who are different. It also provides the perspective of a young black girl and can show other children how it feels to be her. It's a great book for representation and would make young girls feel seen.
The Flag
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Flag teaches kids about the confederate flag and the history behind it. It teaches kids about the civil war, black history, racism and police brutality in a more digestable way. It's a very informative book and covers a range of different topics. It is a good way to introduce young black children to their history and the discrimination they face as well as showing other groups the perspective of black people in America.

Textural collage one
I spent today cutting up and stitching together my first textural collage. I wanted to still create a portrait with collage so I placed the fabrics together in a way that the faces I had created in all of them would be able to come together and create a stitched together face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to keep gaps between my fabric and experiment with different appearances of stitching so it would look like each fragment had be carefully stitched together with a technique that would hold it best. I wanted to keep the gaps because I felt that these represented feelings of loss, like representations of what a disabled person might think is missing, e.g a gap in the cheek to represent a disabled person feeling like they are missing having normal cheeks/face due to the appearance of their physical disability.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I chose pink thread to stitch everything together because it represents care and love. I wanted each fragment of the face to appear that it has been stitched together with love. This is the same reason I avoided parts of the ink/facial features when stitching because I didn't want my stitching to act as if I'm trying to cover up the disability or hide it, but rather hold the disabled person together and support them.
Tumblr media
I'm going to use the rest of the materials/scraps to create another portrait. I have also bought a wooden dowel so I can hang the portraits once they are done.
