I feel as if I'm floating through space. My life, my present life, is going great. I should have no complaints. I'm heading towards completing my PGY3 year of medical residency, my relationship with my mom is fantastic, I feel well-liked in my circles, I'm in love, and the future just seems so bright to me; I'm heading towards such a luminous future like a star in the distance. Except why do I feel dread?

As my body rolls through space, I see glimpses of that bright star ahead, glimpses of my time capsule behind, and everything else is just darkness. Let me help add some nuance:

I'm heading towards completing my PGY3 year, however I need to find a job. I know I'll get a job, and I know I'll get one where I want to go but the uncertainty of what kind of role I'll have - contractor or employee - soul-killing job or enriching - community or academic - per diem or full time - locum or local? It's tough because I don't know how to circumvent this. Many places want someone soon™ or can't see far enough to want me in a year. Other places want me to sign up, apply and be exclusive with them when I don't feel knowledgeable enough to make a decision without signing away my life for a few years. I'm paralyzed by possibility and I continue to hurtle towards an unknowable future.

My relationship with my mom is fantastic but that came at the cost of losing my dad. He passed during the pandemic but not due to COVID19 - small comfort that is. I felt like he was hanging on until I finished medical school and then felt it was time to leave. I don't think I've ever recovered from that. And inbetween the moments where I think of him and miss him and feel the great weight of loss that this world has, I have glimpses and panic about eventually losing my mom too. Space is cold, no matter how many photos come across me; nothing will ever be as warm as a parent's love.

I feel well-liked in my circles. Everyone seems to want to spend more and more time with me. And as much as I enjoy the welcomeness, I find myself retreating more and more into myself. I don't have gratitude for this because I'm used to striking out my own way. I'm used to solitude. I want to appreciate people, but I feel so exhausted because my time feels owed to others. Relationships are dynamic, and they will eventually die without support. But I so wish I could be a friend who pops in and out. Oddly, the comfort of moving through space is the millennia of solitude.

I'm in love. We're about to enter our 8 years together. He's always given me what I've wanted and what I've needed. And I'm learning to be less selfish in this relationship - I'm not very good at it but I'm learning. I'm afraid that if something happened to him, I will never be able to open up to someone new again (see above). Everyone would be measured against the standard that he is. We worked so hard to forge the relationship of our dreams but my anxieties always brace me for the eventuality - by natural or manmade machinations - that we will be apart. And on and on I float in empty space, alone.

The future seems bright but maybe that's because I can only see nuclear fireworks peppering the sky with blazes of the apocalypse. The future feels bleak. We just survived a pandemic, and an ongoing depression. We have multiple national conflicts stirring with new ones coming around the corners like comets. Are we in the 1920s or 2020s? It's so hard to tell anymore that it feels like time dilation is screwing with my head. Gone were the halcyon days of a promising future, and left behind is the nuclear winter of interstellar space. It's horrifically empty and at times beautifully peaceful.

I just want the spinning to stop. I want to stay frozen in time, locked here blissful in an infinite constant.

This is going to get long, but I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the ways that fatphobia has manifested during the pandemic in new and exhausting ways and I want to speak to it a bit. This tweet inspired me to finally write it out.

There is always money to be made off of making us all feel like shit about our bodies. The weight loss industry is projected to be valued at nearly THREE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS annually, worldwide by 2027. (Warning: that link is fatphobic and healthist.) 

Capitalist driven fatphobia doesn’t rest during a pandemic. It doesn’t care that we’re experiencing mass trauma, continued disruption of our “normal” lives. It doesn’t care about our actual well-being...it never has and it never will.

Capitalist driven fatphobia likes that we can be better exploited for profit when we are vulnerable. We’re more vulnerable now than ever before, in many ways.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about how w/ vaccination taking off, many of us will be seeing family/friends in-person for the first time in forever. Take my specific case...I’m twice vaccinated and recently I saw family I haven’t seen in a year in person for the first time. I’d never gone more than 4 months without seeing those folks in-person before...like ever. Suddenly I went three times longer than that until I saw them in the flesh again. 

Someone who you have seen for months and months on a Zoom screen or FaceTime from the shoulders up will begin to become a flesh and blood human in front of you again. So many of us will be navigating moments like this (and we may even have nerves about it, related to our own bodies.)

I think about the coworkers that I used to see every day M-F all year in person and I now only see on screens. Some of them have had entire pregnancies and given birth in isolation. Some of them have had major changes to their health situations and have received new diagnoses (I fall into this category.) Some of them have made major changes to their daily routines, their exercise and eating habits. 

All of us have aged 12 months (so far.) Bodies change. They simply do, that is a rare universal truth. And they change in SO MANY WAYS that are normal and neutral in a year, which includes weight changes. If you see someone every day in passing, the changes are slow and often overall imperceptible. But if you have a mental image of someone who you don’t see for a year and then you see them in person those changes may feel jarring as you notice them. 

There’s a good chance that if you were raised with even the smallest exposure to mainstream US media/culture, you’ve been indoctrinated with a fatphobic mindset. It’s natural and normal to notice changes in someone’s body when you haven’t seen them in a long time, but it is NOT natural or normal to find those changes to be negative when it involves weight gain and positive when it involves weight loss.  THAT frame work (thinner = better) is fatphobic programming driven by exploiting our shame to make money off of us. And it’s what we each need to push ourselves to just fucking END already. Capitalist fatphobic programming is powerful and strong. You might not yet be able to control an automatic/unconscious neural firing of “I see my friend is heavier now and that is bad” but you CAN control holding that thought in mindful awareness, choosing to REJECT IT, and then.... *stay with me here* NOT COMMENTING ON THEIR BODY.  Full stop. Just not saying anything about it...keeping your fatphobic thoughts to yourself and interrogating and naming the thoughts as fatphobic to start working on your own deprogramming.  Your own words, reactions, and the messages you put out ARE controllable and are your responsibility. This goes for making negative comments about your own body and how it may have changed.  You don’t need to be an extended tool of the fatphobic, capitalist make-you-feel-like-shit industrial complex. You can rise above this. We don’t have to be forever beholden to the narratives that produce shame in ourselves and others and continues to hurt fat people, by manifesting as discrimination in the medical system, in jobs, etc.  You CAN free yourself from all of this and as someone who has been on my own journey of “radical self love” and deprogramming of internalized fatphobia for 15 years now, it absolutely DOES get easier. Hi bunnies!

2022. Entering year 3 of the pandemic. The past 2 years I’ve rarely had anyone close to me be COVID+. After my dad died from COVID in 2020 (before vaccines and only remdesivir), the vaccines came and most of my family and friends got it. After the holidays of 2021, everyone I know has gotten infected with Omnicron except me and my mom. But none of them are dying!!! My point: get a N95 mask and get the vaccine! Stay safe.

Minor Setbacks for me in January 2022

1. I had to cancel my Vegas and Hawaii trip for Jan/Feb. I had 1st class tickets to Hawaii that I used miles for and only cost me $110. 😩😩

2 Celine Dion canceled her concert in April and I had great tickets. (Some may see that as a blessing unless you are over a certain age 😂).

Lets offset that negativity with these gems:

1. I booked a beach house in lieu of Hawaii in S. California for February

2. I get $420 back from the canceled concert.

3. I’ve lost 45 pounds! (20.5 kg). I am thrilled. It is NOT easy to lose weight in menopause and in your 50’s.

4. I only have TWENTY 2-0 pounds (9 kg) to go to get to my happy weight. Likely not the final weight BUT that goal is so obtainable now. When you have over 50, 75, 100 lbs you think it’s impossible. Day by day, friends.

5. I’m down 2 short sizes. I fit into jeans yesterday I have not worn in 5 years. No muffin top. Feels good to wear real clothes not just leggings.

6. I’ve joined a couple of long distance (think across the USA) virtual races for this year to get me back to exercising consistently.

I hope y’all are meeting your goals, finding happiness in the little things, staying healthy mentally and physically, and when possible, helping the less fortunate.

Here's a glance at my last few days. I've walked five out of the last seven days which has been lovely getting outside so much. My laundry basket has solely consisted of lounge clothes and workout clothes and I'm loving it - except I'm finding the need for even more sports bras since that's all I wear now. My dishwasher has never had so many coffee cups in it and it makes me so happy to see as it means slow, happy mornings at home.

On Thursday I was multitasking work and erp watch and wanted to also fit in my weightlifting so what's a girl to do except bring erp into the garage with me to get it done. It was lovely hearing her coos as I picked up heavy things and put them back down.

Someone tagged me for a SDS, either @zerocarb or @beenjen, don't recall, and you caught me in my normal state of frazzled hair, make-up free face and sweatshirt wearing self. I don't know about you, but I'm a fan! Except for my daily work video calls that force me to look presentable, I've never been so natural before. Hopefully my hair gets super healthy from not being styled or washed often 😁.
