Workshop 25/11

During this workshop we discussed how ML is a technique used in order to get closer to AI. Letting the machine learn through showing repetitive examples and telling the machine what it is. This spurred some thoughts of supervised learning contra unsupervised learning which I brought up in with my group colleagues, which resulted in a very interesting discussing. This discussion led to understandings of how supervised learning makes the designer dominant whereas in unsupervised learning (such as a twitter bot) could potentially lead to racism, sexism and hurtful knowledge. This made us more prone to go with supervised learning in our own AI that we’re developing the concept of throughout this week.

I learnt a bit more about ML, but it was difficult to do this workshop over zoom. Our teacher expressed frustrations over not being able to do this as we normally do it, physically present, and I agree with that frustration. Since it was over zoom we couldn’t do any “hands on” projects or demos together, we could only watch our teacher go over some basic demos and talk about what we had created with wekinator.

I had some difficulties connecting this workshop to interactive form. I realize it’s valuable to know multiple tools to create AI and use ML in our future projects, but it wasn’t entirely connected to what should’ve been done during this week. Me and my group discussed briefly how to incorporate wekinator into our project this week, and ideated on a device that encourages movement through detecting the users movement throughout the day. If the user isn’t moving enough and the device detects this stillness the device will start playing annoying sounds to get the user to move. But we thought this idea fell quite flat and decided not to go down this route.

By using capacitive sensing and machine learning, two glasses of water are turned into a digital material for the user to explore and appropriate. The design materials that we have available when designing digital artifacts expands along with the technological development, and with the computational machinery it is possible to augment our physical world in ways that challenges our perceptions of the objects we interact with. Audio-visual Vocal Performance Tool using Machine Learning

An audio-visual tool for a vocal performance that uses machine learning to 'sing' back to me in real-time.

Openframeworks is used to analyse and visualise incoming sound. The peak frequency is sent to a Max patch through Wekinator using OSC, and controls the pitch of 2 sine waves and triggers vocal samples. As I sing into the microphone, my laptop responds in real-time.

The visuals consist of a grid of chromagrams using constant-q, the colour being mapped by peak frequency, and are used as a projection during performances. I wanted to keep it simple, just as a supplement to the sound, and to clearly show the relationship between sound and visuals. I tried several different options, such as stacking the chromagrams on top of each other, and played with having them rotate but the X shape worked best for projection.

ml4d machine learning for design

ml4d: machine learning for design is a design platform module conducted by @nkymut at the Division of Industrial Design SDE NUS during the 2017/2018 semester.
