Fourth era Welkynar turned traitor - Taeldil
Born into a noble family of Alinor, Taeldil was always expected to go far, and he did - being chosen as a Welkynar, after all, is a great honor, and his fellow Welkynar are everything to him - after all, two of them are his best friends, and the third is his wife.
With him being loyal almost to a fault, the Thalmor’s betrayal came as a shock to him, Still, they imprisoned a Welkynar, his friend no less, and, having to choose, Taeldil knew exactly where his loyalties lay.
He and Aurane, his gryphon, are the protectors of the group, charging ahead and clearing a path wherever they need to. He keeps a piece of the uniform of every Thalmor commander he kills, though he himself hardly knows why - perhaps it is in revenge, for harming his friends, or maybe it is to scare them. He does not know. But he is absolutely certain than he will never allow the Thalmor to harm the other Welkynar ever again.

Crafting Motif 67: Welkynar
Gloves
“A Welkynar's substantial but intricate gauntlets may be the knight's proudest belongings, since they are among the first items of gear issued to a squire-in-training. If you give any thought to the practical issues of training spirited gryphon mounts, with their powerful, snapping beaks, you'll understand the need for sturdy gauntlets and vambraces!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve been working on this piece on and off for the past year, alongside many other projects. Any who, this is Arterion Caemlock with his gryphon fledgling, Falarielle, about 330 years before the events of Skyrim.
Arterion was created by my father back in 2018 and thus acts as a father-figure to my snow elf oc, Faelori.
Kindof an old wip this one too, used to fix in my head the relationship between Charybde and his father, head of the clan and main Captain, Agamemnon.
More lore below v
In between, I changed a few aspects;
- Agamemnon is a Leviathan, this terrifying breed of Maormer that are half-beast in demeanor. He his extremely large, robust and lethal, but he has a very wise and kind demeanor to his people.
- Due to his very old age, Agamemnon acts with his clan like all of them are his children. It is, in fact, half-true; he has 36 of them, equal in daughters and sons. Being ~800yrs old some of those 36 children have their own lineage now.
- Charybde is the last, the dearliest of them. Born of true love instead of necessity (females pick their males when wanted and needed), Charybde has a special place in his father's heart, so dear he chose to never have an other spawn if it's not with his adored wife, Cérulée. She left, chosen by Orgnum himself to be part of his crew, and Agamemnon respected this decision. Charybde shall be the last.
- Due to his position as both Captain and simple male, Agamemnon usually has few but kind interactions with his spawns. The clan organizes to raise children all together - except for Charybde, that Agamemnon raised partly himself.
- Charybde being half-blood with such a strong and powerful breed, he grows fast, looks intimidating although he's still a child... and many, many expect of him things he's scared he could never atteign.
- Charybde is a sweet person with his kind, and he admires his father for the calm, the cleverness he shows at all time. It would be easy to figure this monster of a maormer to be prompt to rampage, but Agamemnon's taste for violence is as developped as his taste for subtility. With so many spawns, parenting became a second nature.
- Agamemnon is at first a war machine that grew terrifying by how responsabilities shaped in him such an ambivalent temper. Foes fear him and his crew, where each mer answers as one and respect is absolute for the Captain. The Captain is loyal to his mers, careful, just, but shows barely no pity for foes that do not respect their own men first.
- Charybde his a snake-caller by birth. Something that had disappeared in the Torve-Augure clan - the last being his father. Being a snake-caller means you share a natural strong bond with those forces of nature. Agamemnon has a twin snake brother called Adale, a forever hungered beast so colossal it has to eat whales. Charybde has one with a much smaller snake called Scyla, a sea viper, which he loves as his twin sister. Their bond gives him magical surges and snake aptitudes like molting his skin.
- Agamemnon has been to war for long centuries. The last assault on Sunhold gave him a large scar that his snake powers never truely absorbed. He's slowly dying, Adale being tortured by the slow decay of his twin brother and soulmate. Adale's specie is not supposed to survive this long, they keep growing as they feed and their appetite fits their length. Without Agamemnon raiding isles and going on front, Adale lacks food, his nature of a predator becomes a danger for maormer themselves. Charybde is expected to commune with Adale, but Adale is obsessed by its hunger.
somewhat inspired by another ask I saw: you mentioned that when Tally was a child he wanted to be a knight who would protect and help out the people of Summerset when he grew up.
to my knowledge there actually is (or was - not sure if they're still around in canon but in my headcanon they are) a very special knightly order in Summerset who did exactly this - the Welkynars. and they also get gryphons as their loyal steeds, and if that isn't cool I don't know what is.
has Tally heard stories about them? and if they are still around, has he tried to join them (and likely getting rejected as they are very selective, since you mentioned his dreams being crushed)? is he afraid of flying? and what's his opinion of them big four legged birdies? since TES's gryphons downplay the lion half of the creature's traditional depiction I doubt his love for cats would apply to them dhjfdjk
Tumblr media
I might as well be asking this because I have an oc who is simultaneously a Welkynar and a Thalmor... though I would advise Tally to stay away from her.
I'm not sure if the Welkynar are still active. Given that we know the Thalmor took over Summerset and Usurped all means of Royalty so that the main control of power is just the Thalmor.
It's not really stated on the situation with the Welkynar. If anything, they're probably part of the Thalmor as well. Thalmor Soldiers who patrol Summerset. But that's just my guess.
But Taliesin is very much aware of the Welkynar through books he's read about them. They're what inspired that dream. He would love to ride on a Gryphon and travel all over Summerset to help protect his home.
It was his father and mother who were the crusher of that dream. He was very adept to magic, so they didn't want him to become something resembling a common foot soldier. A mage is very in high demand on Summerset and the Altmer, so they pushed him down that path instead before he eventually joined the Thalmor.
Taliesin loves animals in general - except dogs. So a Gryphon would be right up his alley. Especially with growing that bond with a creature he would depend on to fly him all over Summerset.
(making my own post for this as to not derail the art of the original post this was from)
Tumblr media
@caliblorn you'll be pleased to hear that I do, in fact, have some Welkynar oc's. two for now, and only one of them named, though at the very least I'm planning to have the four top members at the very least.
(i refer to them as such because I have adopted the headcanon that there are in fact way more. for more elaboration look here)
and yes, this is in 4E, I am planning for them to show up in one of the sequels to my Skyrim fic, set in Alinor. I would think the Thalmor/Dominion army would find them useful, and that some (but not all) Welkynar members would serve their interests. that and they're just too cool to pass up, no?
now this is where that oc I mentioned earlier, Lady Kythasanwe of Cloudrest, comes in. she's both a Thalmor officer and a Welkynar commander, surprisingly high-ranking given her age of a mere 64 years in 4E 201. being a veteran of the Great War as well as her general tendency to scare people into respecting her factored a lot into this.
her personality and philosophy are more Thalmor than Welkynar: ruthless, cold and calculating, and sadistic. she frequently abuses her power and reputation in both factions to get away with horrible things, and cares for no one aside from her equally intimidating gryphon, Ceynaril (whose name aptly translates to "final shadow"). she does not suffer those who cross her gladly, and is more than willing to weed out those considered unworthy of being Aldmeri - born outside the Summersets, and/or having an appearance deviating from the standards of superior breeding.
not even her comrades in the Dominion ranks, or her own family is spared from her wrath. in fact, one of her first victims was her own sister whom she tormented to the point of making her run away from home, for having an appearance so different from the rest of the bloodline that "proved it to be impure". this kind of thing starts out young, and her parents only encouraged it. and her grudge is as long as her memory, so when the mer she wished was dead returns not only alive and well after decades, but also with allies of her own, Kytha vows to finish what she started...
Star sign:
the Lord
the Atronach
Personality type:
fail knight
fail assassin
probably not the question but I'm not about to do a quiz
Height:
only 190 cm :( not sure but she looks a bit stocky
Alinorian, from Cloudrest
Auridonian, from Iluvamir
any citrus fruit really. citrus fruit salad
Yokuda or Akavir, he wants to see the world. he's known a lot of sailors who go to Yokuda regularly but he's closer to Akavir now
Number of blankets:
one regular blanket but when it's cold a magical blanket from (redacted for now. I enjoy a bit of mystery, tune in to find out)
cloak :( you just want to pick him up and put him somewhere
Random fact:
Gwenda was a Welkynar apprentice once, before the incident. considers herself a knight although she has no formal title like that... she does have knightly spirit and the background for it?
Olly was already somewhat of a Dagonite back in Summerset, though obviously not open about it... what drew him in was his disappointment in the society around him and wish for change
both of these ended up being backstory facts. extras: Gwenda is a natural blonde and Olly is like the spitting image of Indoril Nerevar though he looks different in my story than in most fanart I see ngl
Fourth era Welkynar turned traitor - Iriniel
Iriniel is a healer, and though she is a capable and dangerous mage in her own right, she prefers not to harm anyone - unless they have hurt her loved ones first. Iriniel does not forget such things, and she does not forgive.
Leaving the Summerset Isles behind comes easier to her than it does to the rest of her team. They were familiar, yes, but her true home is with her husband and friends. As long as they are with her, she does not mind change at all. She makes herself look different, too, severing all ties to the Dominion - even dyeing her once golden hair that was deemed perfect by them.
She likes Skyrim well enough. She doesn’t mind the cold, and besides, with all the snow, her dear gryphon Telrielle, with her snow-white feathers, has never had an easier time remaining hidden despite her size.
So, based on the post @nientedenada made on Altmer names, I've devised the names for my Hero of Kvatch's family, all the way down the line to my Last Dragonborn, Leara.
Avarenya, my HoK; Oromis, my Sheogorath; and their two brothers, Amroth and Rumil, belong to a noble house in the city of Cloudrest. Their father and his brother:
Elmoriar, their father, is the younger of two sons of the Lord of House Stardust. His uncle, Elglorion, maintained a manor house in the city of Skingrad, which he left to Elmoriar in the event of his death. Elmoriar gifted the house to Oromis in 3E 401. Resents his elder brother as he does not believe Celengon takes being heir seriously.
Celengon, Elmoriar's older brother, is the heir to House Stardust, but he is a staunch bachelor. Oromis was originally groomed to be Celengon's heir before Oromis left to join the Arcane University. Celengon becomes Lord Varlarata in 3E 434 and is later succeeded by his nephew, Amroth, in 4E 98.
Their paternal grandparents, Lord and Lady Varlarata:
Elcaranon was the Lord of House Stardust from c. 3E 100 to 3E 434, at which point he was succeeded by his older son, Celengon. Elglorion was his younger brother. He was a strict and practical person both at home and in court.
Lothmiriel was Lady Stardust from c. 3E 100 to until her death in 3E 407. She was not fond of her daughter-in-law, Morwen, but doted on her grandchildren, particularly Avarenya, who was the only girl.
Their mother's side of the family:
Morwen, their mother, is an only child. She is very ambitious and seeks to elevate her station through her children. After the death of Lady Varlarata, she acts as hostess for her father-in-law.
Arkano, Morwen's father was a commander in the Welkynars in Cloudrest. He came from a long line of Welkynars, but is the first to achieve commander since the early Second Era. His grandson, Rumil, serves under him during the first part of his career.
Filiglan, Morwen's mother, was a sister to a respected vintner. Hér pedigree was clean, if lower than typically acceptable. She encouraged Oromis to follow his dream of joining the Arcane University.
The above are the two lines joined in Oromis, Amroth, Avarenya, and Rumil. Therefore, their name is:
'len Morwen Arkano Filiglan 'ata Elmoriar Elcaranon Lothmiriel cal' Varlarata
Avarenya ran away from Summerset in 3E 426. She was subsequently disowned. She then spent the next seven years bumming out in her brother Oromis's house during which time she tried to compete in the Arena and then joined the Fighters Guild. Then everything changed when the Mythic Dawn attacked.
In 3E 433, Avarenya became the Hero of Kvatch. At some point later in the Oblivion Crisis, she and Martin Septim slept together. They were IN LOVE! Not long after that, Martin destroyed the Amulet of Kings, mantled Akatosh, and defeated Mehrunes Dagon. He then turned into stone, leaving Avarenya knocked up and alone.
Subsequently, Avarenya hid out in Oromis's house. She didn't tell anyone she was having Martin's baby — few people knew she was even pregnant. Avsrenya and Martin's son, Magnus, was born in Evening Star, 3E 434/4E 1.
Concurrently:
Oromis, a member of the Arcane University's Council of Mages, has gone to investigate a mysterious door in Niben Bay. About the time his sister kills Mankar Camoran, Oromis mantles Sheogorath.
Amroth, after Oromis has renounced his rights to the house lordship, is Celengon's heir. With his grandfather Elcaranon's death, Amroth is heir presumptive to the Varlarata title. In the decades leading up to the Oblivion Crisis, Amroth fell in with a fringe group, which would later become the ruling body of Summerset.
Rumil is an active Welkynar. He got serious flytime during the Oblivion Crisis. Rumil is the only one having a good time right now.
Avarenya raises her and Martin's son, Magnus, in Skingrad. Despite being disowned by her parents, it is very important to Avarenya to give Magnus an Altmer name. Unfortunately, she never knew Martin's mother's name (neither did Martin), so she inserted a generic "Unknown Mother" type deal into Magnus's name.
Magnus 'len Avarenya Elmoriar Morwen 'ata Martin Uriel Lenvvahta cal' Septim | Racuvarla
While Magnus is technically a Septim, Avarenya gives him a different last name, one which she adopted for herself after being disowned. She belonged to House Stardust, but now her rights to the Varlarata name have been revoked. In response, Avarenya becomes a Fallen Star:
Varlarata = Stardust; Racuvarla = Fallen Star
Oromis, now Sheogorath, bestows a pair of magic rings to his sister which alter outward appearance. Daedric in origin, the rings are made of madness ore and fire, and confuse any Aetheric based magic that may try to undo the enchantment. While the ring does nothing to Avarenya, it changes Magnus's appearance to make him appear fully Altmer rather than Half-elven.
Avarenya is killed in c. 4E 11. Magnus is afterward a ward of Janus Hassildor. At 23, Magnus leaves Skingrad for High Rock, as the political situations in Summerset and Cyrodiil are increasingly tumultuous. He eventually settles in Wayrest.
Magnus appears Altmer, save for his blue eyes, which he got from his father. To cover these, he wears one of the rings Sheo!Oromis gave Avarenya. He meets Linley, a Priestess of Mara, in 4E 80. It is a long time before he tells her his full name. They marry in 4E 85. When they have the twins in 4E 87, they make the conscious decision to change his (famous) parents' names when naming Marelen and Avrose.
'len Linley Ardil Alpenwe 'ata Magnus Atavahta Avarin cal' Racuvarla
In omitting Martin's name and altering Avarenya's, the twins' connection is much less obvious to anyone taking a cursory glance.
Marelen, the older twin, is magically gifted and enjoys trolling the Thalmor agents that nose around High Rock. She marries a Breton blacksmith named Thoronis Ormand (his father Antoine named Thoronis after the Direnni he worked for) in 4E 133. Their daughter, Maragathe, is born in 4E 137. She is killed in 4E 148 by order of Lord Varlarata, aka Amroth, who is unaware he's taken out a hit on his niece.
Avrose, the younger twin, is less headstrong and actionary than her sister. She marries an Altmer teacher in Wayrest, Vorondon, in 4E 119, and they have a son, Erbane, born in 4E 132. She takes in her niece after the deaths of her sister and brother-in-law in 4E 146 and 4E 148.
Magnus dies in 4E 142 while his grandchildren are still young.
Marelen does not give Maragathe an Altmer name. She and Thoronis are more inclined toward Breton culture. Marelen names her daughter Maragathe Elanor Ormand, leaving only a nod to her High Elven heritage in the form of Maragathe's middle name. In contrast, Avrose does give Erbane an Altmer name.
Erbane 'len Avrose Magnus Linley 'ata Vorondon Hendunar Anorien cal' Bostor
in 4E 148, Maragathe goes to live with her aunt and uncle. Avrose's husband, Vorondon, discovering Maragathe to be a prodigy, trains her in magic. Maragathe's lone handicap is her low magicka regeneration rate, due to her being born under the Atronach. Avrose gifts her with a moonstone diamond ring that boosts her regeneration rate (regenerate magicka 100%}.
In 4E 155, a training accident results in the death of Vorondon. While the accident isn't Maragathe's fault, she subsequently runs away from home. Avrose is devastated by her husband's death and her niece's running away. Linley moves in with her daughter and grandson at this time.
In 4E 156. Maragathe joins the Blades under her middle name, Elanor. When she is sent to Alinor to infiltrate the Aldmeri Dominion in 4E 166, she does so using her mother's ring. Maragathe Elanor appears very Breton, save for her height of 5'11" (180 cm), white gold complexion, and the sharper taper to her ears. With the use of her mother's ring, Elanor appears entirely Altmer. Under the cover name Vilya, she devises an Altmer name based on her uncle, who was respected in Wayrest, and though he was not committed to the Dominion, he wasn't vocally defiant of it either.
Vilya 'len Lomiel Atavahta Lenvahta 'ata Vorondon Hendunar Anorien cal' Bostor
"Lomiel" is a fictitious woman Maragathe Elanor Vilya invented to act as her mother. As her uncle is dead, no one can uncover the validity of her lineage, but it is enough for her to gain a position under Elenwen in Alinor.
This is the last use of the Altmer naming scheme in the Racuvarla line. Erbane marries a Breton woman and names his son in the Breton style. Maragathe Elanor Vilya Leara names her children in the Nordic fashion: Martin Ulfricsson and Kyneiren Ulfricsdóttir.
Although if you're shipping Rosewing, Leara's kids are simply Kendov and Kaandrem respectively.
The Varlarata line is continued through Amroth's children Calmirien and Thorondon:
'len Galadien Cuillas Celithil 'ata Amroth Elmoriar Morwen cal' Varlarata
Rumil has one child, a daughter:
Armirel 'len Lindis Caragon Rohiren 'ata Rumil Elmoriar Morwen cal' Varlarata
Armirel, Calmirien, and Thorondon are Erbane and Leara's first cousins twice removed. As of 4E 201, Thorondon is heir to House Stardust.
WIP of my OC fic Divine Act of Creation
(feedback appreciated!)
The patio, enclosed by chiseled limestone ankle-height wallings, had a beautiful view to the sea. The balustrade was ennobled by delicate filigree carvings and double twists of exquisite make and was as secure as it was aesthetic. But Chrysalis wasn't there for the architecture.
As he looked at the snaking vines of morning glory blossoms, something dense coiled in his stomach. It had him wondering what would be of his plans if the subject of his dreams was not there.
"Ah, hopeful, I bid you welcome to the Manor of Masques!" A voice projected like a Welkynar charge greeted him, and he stopped, hunched with his hands like claws, before straightening up in front of the masked woman. "I received a letter from you, and I must say I am excited. Go on, then, show me your passion."
They say first impressions last forever, Chrysalis was certain this one would. Alchemy was her mask's name, and she was to sponsor his audition before Grand Maestro Forte. What an honor.
"It is a pleasure to meet you mask to mask." Confidence was key, but he kept himself humble. After all, he was nothing if not raw wood for her to polish into a carving of great wonder.
