SESSION TWELVE of the BatIM Call of Cthulhu game, aka Continuing to have a Great Time At The Masquerade! : )
Joey and Bendy destabilised early on, meaning Joey went through the ENTIRE masquerade UNABLE TO STOP SMILING
getting some mixed messages here, Joey
Sometimes u dress ur characters up as rabbits for fun but then you have a lot of emotions about them losing their minds and then u gotta draw them losing their minds while dressed as rabbits... anyway Jack being mind-controlled did NOT help Sammy hold onto his mental stability at this nightmare party in case you were wondering,
ANYWAY HAVE, MORE OUT-OF-CONTEXT QUOTES, UNDER THE CUT
[Sammy is played by me, Joey is played by Boo (inkyvendingmachine), Henry is played by Maf (inkcryptid), Jack is played by Mochi (whatyouwantedmetosee) and Thren (haunted-hijinxer) is our GM!]
[GM] Joey, make a POW roll also... [Joey] Oh, boy, [GM] ...because Bendy was also told to enjoy this party, and you guys just passed a plate of food, and he wants to eat! [Jack] FEED YOUR SON! [Joey] No!!! [Henry] HES A HUNGRY BOY! [Sammy] A GROWING BOY!
[Henry] Henry will look back to see if Moonlight is trying to follow them! [GM] He will see that Moonlight has grabbed onto the railing of the stairs and is hobbling slowly down them. [Joey] *extremely evil-sounding cackling*
[Jack] All Cthulhu Official Dice actually come weighted, to make you fail.
[Henry] Gotta try harder than that, bitch! [Henry] ....that wasn't in character. [Jack] It's in character, but he's only thinking it. [Sammy] That's the golden text you see on the wall if you use the seeing tool
[Henry] My Luck is 68, I don't know what y'all are doing! [Jack] We're spending Luck so that we'll fail! [Sammy] BEING UNLUCKY! I've barely spent any Luck, I'm just NOT A LUCKY GUY
[Henry] Oh, Avedon's here, [GM] There's a gunshot, and he tries to shoot Fowler! [Joey] Um, well, uh, whoops!, rest in peace Fowler! [Sammy] Yeah, that'll sort itself out, let's go! [GM] Moonlight seems to reconsider from telling people to grab you guys, to grabbing Avedon instead. [Joey] Oh! THANKS AVEDON, your sacrifice will, not be thought about in the slightest!!!
[Sammy] Is... weird question, does this room look like it matches the architecture of the rest of the house? [GM] [GM] [GM] ...make a sanity check.
[Sammy] It would be a like, Come on Jack, do you know where you are, shake it off, snap out of it, kind of thing. [GM] Why don't you make a... a.... oh boy, [Sammy] One of my REALLY persuasive social skills?
[GM] This probably just registers to Jack as, Sammy griping about a party, which isn't that strange. [Jack] Yeahhhh, he wants to leave. He always does that. I wanna stay at least a little longer! [GM] That just means it's Jack's job to find them something fun and good to do. [Sammy] Oh boy, [GM] I don't think Jack is being compelled to be aggressive about this necessarily, he just feels like he's Jack at a party, doing the things Jack normally does, and trying to have a good time! [Sammy] Ah, and everyone else is being weird, [GM] Yeah! Everybody's being really weird! You're at this nice party, and now you're in this weird room? The party's back there somewhere! [Jack] I mean not that he's opposed to bein' dragged into side rooms at parties by cute boys, but,
[GM] The table looks like a table that Henry has in his house, actually. [Sammy] Have I ever been in Henry's house? These are questions I didn't expect to need to ask tonight.
[Sammy] Jack, this is weird! You see this is weird, right?! [Jack] Well yeah, it is kinda weird that we're in-- what are we doing here? [Joey] Joey is going to grab Jack's arm, and point to the next door, and go "Party is this way!"
[GM] Peter looks worried... [Sammy] Sammy looks worried too! Well, Sammy looks angry, but in a worried way.
[Joey] Joey is going to scream frustratedly. [Sammy] Is there ink in this room? [GM] There is not. [Jack] Is there a party in this room? [GM] Definitely no, only the party you bring with you.
[Joey] Joey is going to scream again. [Joey] He's also going to kick the door. He might stub his toe. [Sammy] Through all this, Joey is smiling. I just need us all to remember that. [Joey] YES. Also his tail is furiously going. [GM] Bendy is also upset! There is nothing to eat here.
[Joey] Joey is going to try to feed Bendy some ideas, [GM] He doesn't want ideas, he wants food!
[Joey] So.... what happens if you fumble a sanity roll?
[GM] See, here's the silly part. At this point, right? At this point, the best place to do the tasks you want to do, involve either getting the stone out of the room with the safe, or having the staff that Henry is currently holding. [Sammy] So you would arrive, by completely different means, to the same place that we are! [GM] Clearly Joey is inside the safe.
[Jack] Bad and naughty Joey Drews get put in the safe to atone for their sins!
[Henry] Henry is going to channel his inner Joey Drew and round the corner and say "No, sorry about him, we're just here on inspection, we need to check the safe." [Henry] Which is probably a Fast Talk, which I hope it isn't, because my Fast Talk is a 5. [GM] Unless you wanna try to turn that into a persuade somehow? [Henry] I'll do Persuade! [GM] What are you doing to persuade them, rather than just lying? [Henry] *rolls* I failed... I'm gonna push it... [Sammy] *uneasy noises* IF YOU PUSH IT AND IT GOES BAD, IT GOES WORSE [Henry] AH! HAHA! I ROLLED A SIX! [Sammy] THAT'S STILL NOT LESS THAN FIVE! [Henry] WELL IM DOING PERSUADE! [Sammy] That means you have to NOT LIE! [Henry] ....Fuck. [Henry] Okay, uh, there's an emergency, we need the contents of that safe. [Sammy] THATS STILL A LIE??? [Joey] NO actually, THAT'S TRUE! [Henry] It IS an emergency!!
[Sammy] Sammy cannot believe that this is working.
[GM] Bendy does wonder what his plan is for getting out of the safe. This does not seem like a fun party place. [Joey] Um, [Joey] Joey says it's a surprise.
[GM] Henry, the safe does indeed open! And there's a Joey! [GM] Bendy says "Oh wow!" [Henry] Henry tries his best to keep a straight face, like yes! this is exactly what he came here for! [Sammy] (Sammy is NOT keeping a straight face) [Jack] (Straight? In this party?)
[Jack] He's probably saying something like, "What are you doing, he's one of us!" [Jack] And that could go either way. That could mean "No, he's chill, I will persuade you to stop!" Or that could mean, "We are also criminals!"
[GM, as the guards] Then why does he look like the Yellow King's messenger? [Henry] *not missing a beat* We get that a lot.
[GM] Something falls from the sky and lands in front of him. And it's a person! [Joey] Is he alive? [GM] Very much not. [Sammy] How... how Illusion of Living canon-compliant is this Joey...?
[Jack] So... it would probably occur to Jack that this is weird for a party,
[Henry] Joey don't touch it! [Joey] Why not? [Henry] There's runes around it. I don't know if you can touch it. [Joey] Joey's gonna touch it. [Henry] *long-suffering sigh* If you get zapped, I'll tell you I told you so!
[Jack] Jack really wishes we were just back at the party right now, you guys... [Jack] Only bad things have happened. [Jack] Pete's traumatised, Joey's goopy, the Lurker ate all of the snacks,
[Sammy] Can I try to break free from Henry? Sammy's gonna try to run over there. [Henry] At this point, Sam can go, if he wants. [Sammy] Okay, cool. Then Sammy's gonna go and put ink in his mouth! [Henry] Goddammit. I was hoping you were going to check on Joey!
[Joey] You can’t take all of the sanity hits! You have to leave some for other people! [Jack] Says you! You got so many temps!! And an indefinite!!
[GM] Bendy probably is complaining loudly about WHY DID HE WALK THROUGH THE RUNES??? [Joey] Oh! I thought he was going to complain about the party, or lack thereof, [GM] That’s part of not having fun at the party, he’s not into that! [Joey] Well, [GM] This is not a fun party activity!!
[GM] But he doesn’t think it will destroy either of them, if you do it right! [Jack] That’s a nice, way to end that sentence,
[Sammy] Let us hurry! May I take the stone? [Joey] Joey shrugs. [Sammy] Sammy will, uh, attempt to reach inside of... whatever this is, and find the stone. [Henry] Reach INTO your LOCAL boss, and you will find A Friend And Boy,
[Sammy] Is there anything in this room that I can pick up, and then hit him in the head with? [GM] Henry has a stick... uh....there’s a projector.... [Sammy] Can I pick that up? [GM] No, you cannot. [Sammy] It would be REALLY funny if Sammy dropped a projector on someone else’s head. [Sammy] HOW THE TURNTABLES!!!
[GM] ...Can you impale with a rocking horse...???? [Sammy] I don’t want to impale, I want to knock him in the head so he passes out!!! Rest your head, it’s time for bed!!!
[Jack] I don’t think Jack has any plans after this! [Jack] I meant that in the sense that he doesn’t know what he’s doing next, but the way I phrased it, now it just sounds like he’s hitting on Fowler, like, he doesn’t have anything to do after this, are you free? That’s not canon.
[Joey] I don’t know how this will go, [Sammy] Good luck! [Joey] But Joey would like to-- [Sammy] Sammy believes in half of you! [GM] w-which Sammy? wHICH HALF?!
[Jack] I know you said “note.” But my brain at first processed that word as “milk.” [Henry] *laughing* “Did you get my milk, Fowler?” [Jack] He drank the last carton and he didn’t buy more! [Sammy] “I’m going to the store, want me to get anything? *jumps into the lake*”
[GM] Combat Jack! [Jack] *exasperated* He’s not a Combat Boy! Jack is soft and warm, like mashed potatoes!!!
[GM] Norman is wondering to Henry if he oughta be concerned about you all getting what you want out of this. [Henry] .....Maybe.

"Yes, the weird symbols and all of this is affecting my employees--” “Is that why your eyes are all weird?” “... yes.”
💀 Call of Cthulhu: Haunted Hijinx Masterpost 💀
So, the... the image of this one is a very over the top representation of things that happened cause I sure really wanted to get that scoobydoo hallway gag in here. Most of it DID happen in a hotel hallway and involved people going in and out of doors a lot so, like... I had to.
First though:  Spoilers for the First Scenario from Tales of the Crescent City, which has been reprinted out of the Great Old Ones; We are actively playing, please no spoilers, but also we will have spoilers from it ourselves as we play. Read at your own risk.
This one might actually be shorter for once cause I zoned out on getting it done and now my brain is filled with the next episode instead and it’s very hard to like, focus... on previous ep.
Talked to Allison more, got info from her, Joey and Sammy got some alcohol from her. Casually did not say a buncha things we probably should have, this will be important later haha.
Head back to the hotel, Sammy and Lurker have... a talk. Joey is accidentally there too. Eventually come to the conclusion that maybe it will be safer to have Sammy to sleep in the same room with Joey, cause the Lurker can keep an eye on him while the Humans Sleep. Oh also the Lurker borrows a sketchbook from Henry so he can draw while watching the humans sleep. Yknow, as you do.
Left on their own, Henry asks Jack to accompany him to go do a stupid thing. Jack... agrees... and then probably regrets it when this stupid thing that Henry wasn’t giving details on was to gO SMEAR HIS WEIRD GLOWING BLOOD ONTO ONE OF THOSE GLOWING SYMBOL THINGS. IT DOESN’T GO WELL.
oh well time for bed.
Jack and Henry have some nightmares and wake up a bit shaken. Henry decides to read Alice in Wonderland to calm himself down. It’s... not as helpful as he thought, decides to sketch some but eventually he falls asleep again.
Jack ends up writing a buncha stuff down in his note book about his dream, but eventually just passes out again while still writing. F for Jack, that’s gonna feel terrible in the morning.
After a little longer, Sammy wakes up from his own nightmare, but at least he’s still Sammy this time!!! ( despite everything it’s still you dot reference ) But the Lurker uhhh needs help, cause Joey’s having some kind of nightmare and is unable to stop influencing him to make a ton of weird scribbles. Sammy wakes Joey up but uh, the jolt manages to jostle them out of their stability and drop into a more corrupted form, complete with tail!!! and starry eyes!! and a grin that doesn’t go away. ever
Sammy steps into the bathroom while Joey goes to get some ink out of the safe, meanwhile something opens the door to Henry and Jack’s room. Sammy manages to hear this even over the sound of the sink running cause it’s Sammy, and while Joey manages to get his drink, he doesn’t fully restore back to the more stable form before Sammy is out in the hallway to investigate what’s going on.
Which uh, there’s some cultists out there, one doing some kind of spell, the other painting symbol on Jack and Henry’s door, which Sammy immediately dashes over and smears his hand across. And licks the paint off his hand. It’s silly time.
Meanwhile you’re probably wondering what kinda spell that dude is doing. How about some kind of SNAKE SPELL?? Jack has woken up and started to look around the room at the noise, and then finds a gIANT SNAKE BETWEEN HIM AND LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE IN THE ROOM. Luckily Sammy making a racket in the hallway is enough to wake Henry up, and he instantly goes to attack the snake. Meanwhile, Prophet immediately gets into fights with the cultists, which when Joey follows him out, tries to de-esculate the situation best (?) he can, by uh. Toon arm clawing at the one doing the spell, and then going to grab the other one who is currently beating up Sammy. But he’s unstable, and pushes the ink a bit too far, which floods back and consumes him, and Joey and the Lurker end up uhh... a Larger inky covered creatures, slow moving, mute, unable to stop smiling. One eye left visible.
Meanwhile, Henry and Jack manage to take care of the snake. It’s not dead, but Henry sure did a number on it, and they rush out just in time to witness uhhh whatever Joey has become.
After everyone takes a sanity hit except for Prophet who literally cannot because no sanity left, the remaining mostly alive cultist runs off, followed by Sillytime Sam who had managed to steal his paint and re-up his “”my mind is clear”” time.
Joey manages to point Henry and Jack in the direction of Our Lovely Prophet and the Cultist, but ends up alone just crawling into his room again and laying on the floor until he and the Lurker can console each other enough to synch back up and take a more working form.
Prophet manages to follow the cultist through the crowd, and also leaves a paint trail for Henry and Jack to follow... by accident, of course, he’s not thinking of them. But it’s very clear they’re not gonna find him soon with everything going on in the streets, so they double back to check on Joey and get properly prepared to chase down their friend gone inky.
Meanwhile, Prophet eventually follows the cultist back to the warehouse that Henry and Joey investigated earlier. He slips in and follows the inky sense into the hidden room, where he instantly defaces the symbol on the wall. And messes some other things up. Gets more inky paint in a jar. And when he runs out of things to deface... prays. Because he’s not quite sure where to go from here. His navigate is -10 after all.
Joey manages to recover while Jack gets actually dressed and Henry watches over him, trying to... well, be there, cause that’s really all the help Henry has. But after an inky ritual to help restabilize, Joey throws on his hat, shoes, gloves... and a long coat, before heading out into the night with Henry and Jack to find Prophet Sammy. (also they toss all their valuables into Joey’s room, and leave the door ajar to the other one... just to like, make it look more like someone broke in while we were out, instead of maybe it’s our fault there’s paint and blood splatters right outside our door.) With the streets a bit more empty now, they manage to follow the ink drips long enough that Henry and Joey can tell they’re heading towards the warehouse, and just b-line for that.
This time it seems actually semi active?? Knowing that they’ll 1. probably be recognized 2. sneaking in will take up more time than they have, Joey proceeds to just demand his way in past the guard with his impressive fast talking skills. Thank u fast talk, u never let me down. Time to find our lost sheep.

chapter thirty two: last christmas in new york
Sam never had her meeting with Bill at any given time during that following week. The whole entire time she had expected him to linger there over her shoulder as she drew up with pencils, colored and pure graphite otherwise, while in class. While she was relieved that he never did once show up, she still wondered what he had in mind for that summer and the months following.
There came a point in which she hoped that it would only be for that single summer and not the rest of the year. She knew that it was ridiculous to assume such a thing, and yet she still managed to think ahead. She had hope in Anthrax's new album for that coming year and that she and Joey could in fact take things to the next level. So much more that she needed to figure out with him in particular.
Even with the arrival of late October and the first freezing rains of the season, Sam couldn't help but feel that it would be her last autumn in New York, and ultimately her last Halloween there: all the spooky decorations and the fleeting scent of cinnamon in the air made her wish for those first days in the city again, even when she still lived in the Bronx. The smell of cinnamon made her think of Cliff as well. The smell of Christmas and home.
If it really was that significant of a task for her to carry out, then she knew that she would have to spend a great deal of time out there. And yet, the more thought she put into it, the more it felt so ludicrous to her. But then again, home called her with each passing day. Even with the midst of October, the days of the term seemed to drag by, not just for her but for Marla as well, who had come home every day from school looking as though she had run a mile at some point during the day.
Hardly enough time to relish in the rest of her time with one of her best friends, or in New York City. All both young women could do following their work was have dinner and then curl up under the covers with a book to read or with Genie curled up next to them. The very thing they had worked for and the very thing that made both of them head out to school had found its way into the realm of tedium. Sam lay in bed with her eye on her art journals and she wondered where it was all going wrong. A time away from the journals and the art desk, and she could return with a fresh approach.
Of course!
That was also the day she finally found that little bit of curiosity for some insight into it all, given Bill never showed up one time during her classes. Add to this, she thought of something else she had to figure out with Marla in particular. It was right after school and Marla herself had come home early in order to work on her own senior project. Sam knocked on her door and she peered over her shoulder at her. She nudged the door open and stepped inside.
“Hey,” Marla called to her; she swiveled around on her stool and in turn showed Sam the trio of drawings on her desk as well as the look of exhaustion on her face.
“Hey,” Sam replied back to her.
“What's happening?”
“I'm just curious about your own senior project—I also have to confess something. And I don't know who else to say this to—I mean, I haven't spoken to Aurora since Alex's birthday party last month, and we barely spoke to.”
“Yeah, and she made it about herself, too.”
“Right! Add to this, Bel's still at school and the boys are over in Europe right now. So you are literally the only person I can talk to about any this at the moment.”
“Go ahead,” said Marla with a shake of her head.
“Well,” Sam began, and she cleared her throat as well, “I'm not a liar, I'm not gonna lie to you, Marla, but... I'm kind of tired of this whole thing.”
Marla sighed through her nose and she tapped the eraser of her pencil on the inclined desk surface for a bit, and then she nodded her head. She let her eyes wander over to the desk next to her. Those drawings, those bare drawings that seemed to taunt both of them. Those drawings without any sort of feeling to them: they looked as though they hadn't been crafted by a human woman but by a machine.
“You wanna know something—I am, too,” she said in a low voice. She then turned her head back to Sam. “Hey, at least you get a trip out to California and you get to go see your parents again. I don't have a clue what I'm gonna do next year. At least Bel has an idea what she'll be doing: she's gonna be working in a glass shop up in Albany, but I have no idea about myself, though.”
“You and Genie, too,” Sam added.
“Right!”
Sam folded her arms across her chest. “Bel's going up to Albany, really?”
“Oh, yeah. She told me this—today actually—once school is out for the both of us, she's packing it up and bouncing up there. My best friend is actually going to move away from me.”
“Well, at least she's just going up the road, though,” Sam pointed out. “You know, she's not going—clear across the country.”
Marla sighed through her nose. One of their own was about to leave sooner than Sam, and then she would have to leave; Marla's eyes swept back over the pages on the desk next to her. If art brought her hands to that of a machine, then therein lay a dead end for her, and Sam had the impulse to call up Bill and tell him about it. But then again, they were a year apart. Whatever Marla had to do for herself was far different from that which awaited her the next summer.
“Can I at least see what it's supposed to encapsulate?” she asked her at one point. Marla then gave her cherry red hair a light toss back with a flick of her head.
“Yeah—Mrs. Robinson gave me what to do like the first day of school—which really makes me wonder what Bill has in store for you if he's telling you about it now. I have to fill out this journal—” She set her hand on a brown hard cover journal to the left of her. “—plus make a whole series of drawings, three of them erotic and three of them far more chaste. She told me she wants it to be in the realm of 'yin' and 'yang', like opposites of each other. The meeting of sexuality without it. She described it as like the human experience. Neither side understands the point of the other, although I'm not sure as to how to bring the chaste side to life, you know without being too on the nose with it.”
“Right, right.” Sam paused for a second as she thought about her encounters with Joey; even though Marla couldn't hardly relate to the chaste side of life, she definitely could. “So—is that it?”
“Oh, wait, hang on—she gave me this note before I came home earlier.” She picked up a little sheet of paper stuck onto the corner of the desk. “It says 'Miss Taylor, be sure to tell Miss Grimes to write up letters of recommendation for the pending masters and doctorates.'” She waved the paper about as if it meant nothing. “Yeah, another part of the whole thing is Bel and I have to write up letters of recommendation for a few of our classmates who are going onto to get their master's or doctorate degrees.”
Marla then turned to Sam with her eyebrows raised. “Hey, there's an idea for you. Get your master's. He'll have to take you back home at some point because of that. The only drawback I see with that is everything I've heard about both levels of degree are a lot of work. And I mean, a lot of work. You think we're burnt out right now? That's a whole other can of beans—at least from what I'm told about it.”
“Well, if that's just what a senior project is supposed to be, then it kind of makes me wonder exactly awaits me out in California.”
“I have no clue what he's supposed to give you,” Marla confessed to her with a shake of her head. The cherry red roots of her hair began to fade away in their boldness and into her original plain brown color.
“Hey, look at that—it's time to dye your hair again,” Sam pointed out with a nod of her head.
“Yeah, I know.” Marla patted the crown of her head. “I just haven't decided on what color I want next.”
“I'm telling ya: different colors, like a bunch of stripes.”
Marla chuckled at that. “Stripes, like one is black and the next is a muted tone and then a glossy neon one?”
“Yeah!”
“I dunno, Sam,” she confessed with a shake of her head, “—that's a lot of work. Like, that is a lot of work. Remember that metallic sheen I had that one time, you know the one where it looked as though my hair was changing colors? That took like a whole afternoon to do because it was hard on my neck and there was a lot of layering involved, too. I mean, just one color takes a whole couple of hours to do. I'm still surprised Charlie was able to keep it neat—like he didn't make this huge mess in the bathroom.”
“Well, there's always doing a single stripe,” Sam pointed out. “Like you can dye your hair solid black and then add a tiny sliver near the crown of your head.”
“Kind of like Alex's hair?”
“Yeah! Except you should make your stripe like bright pink or blue instead of gray.”
“Like neon colored?” Marla smiled.
“Yeah! I can help you with that, too.”
“It's not hard. Yeah, it's one of those things where it's not hard but it's just—time consuming. You don't just dye your hair willy nilly: you have to set time aside to do it. And it also takes work to pull off right because it can just make a mess or not show up at all. One of the things I learned about dyeing dark hair a weird color like blue or pink or even blonde is you have to bleach it before hand and I remember the first time that happened, too. The first time I bleached my hair and I thought 'I'm never doing that again.' Like right after that, I dyed my hair that bright tangerine orange and with those streaks on the side of my head. Remember that?”
“The first time we met each other!” Sam exclaimed. “I liked you with orange hair.”
“I liked it, too. And I liked those little streaks I had, too, because they were odd. And everyone knew me not as 'Charlie's girl' but as 'the girl with the bitchin' hair.'”
“I liked you with purple hair, too.”
“Bel really liked the purple, and so did Danny Lilker. During the Stormtroopers of Death tour, the first time he saw the purple hair on me, it was like one of those cartoon wolves when they see a foxy girl.”
“Did he howl?” Sam laughed.
“He may as well have!”
“But ever since then, you just layered the colors on top of each other.”
“Yeah. This cherry tomato color was done right on top of that metallic hairdo I had, so because of that, it's due for a redo anyways. Which means if I'm going to a weird color again like blue or pink, even if it's just a little Alex Skolnick or Dale Bozzio type streak at the front of my head, I have to bleach it no matter. And you gotta help me with it, too. The first time I did it Charlie helped me and I'm glad he did, too.”
“Well—where are you right now with your senior project?” Sam asked her.
“I've been wanting a break,” she confessed. “And it's still early, too.” She then nibbled on her bottom lip. “I'm gonna have to go out and get hair dye, though.”
“You can go blonde for a little bit, though,” Sam pointed out.
“I don't look right with blonde hair,” Marla told her. “It's too sharp of a contrast with my eyes. I'll show you what I mean once we get it. And the first time around it itched like crazy, even when I had washed it all out and tried to make it all nice. I can see people confusing me for Bel, too.” She paused for a minute and then she snapped her fingers. “Tell you what. We can bleach my hair and then I can wash it out real good, and while I'm in the shower, you can run on down the block here and get some black and bright blue hair dye for me.”
“You want blue?”
“Yeah. I think that's a good color to work with now. Either that or green, like bright green. I know I've changed hair colors before school terms ended, but I'm feeling it right now. I'm due for dyeing. I'm ready to dye.”
Without another word, Sam and Marla headed into the bathroom with a bottle of powder bleach, some toner, and a shower cap: there was a pair of rubber gloves in the drawer. Marla held still as Sam mixed the powder and toner in the container right next to her. She would pour the bleach over her head while she lay her neck across in the edge of the bathtub: it was either that or lay down in the sink.
“Charlie suggested that, too,” Marla recalled before she lay down, “and I was like, 'I think that's going to make a huge mess, though, Char.' So kudos to you for helping me lay down in the tub.”
“So once it's mixed together, I just work it into your hair?”
“Yeah, you start from the tips and then work your way up to the top of my head—”
Sam leaned forward for the first piece of hair down in the tub and scrubbed the bleach mixture in. It took some time, but she eventually reached Marla's scalp. She had closed her eyes once Sam reached the crown of her head: the entirety of her hair had been laced with something that made Sam think of bubble bath. Meanwhile, pieces of cherry red hair dye bled off of her hair, such that it resembled to blood.
“How're you feeling?” she asked her.
“Okay. Kinda itchy, though.”
“Ooh—damn.”
“It's okay. It's part of the process, getting rid of the color in the keratin. So now—where are you?”
“I'm at the top of your head.”
Marla then opened her eyes.
“You got the shower cap on hand?”
“Right here.” Sam gestured to the shower cap on the edge of the tub next to her. She hesitated to pick it up for her given the bleach concoction on the gloves; thus Marla slipped it under her hair.
“Help me out here—”
Sam stuck stray strands of hair into the cap so they all would stay in place on Marla's head. Within a matter of seconds, Marla herself had the cap upon her head.
“So I just let it sit for a bit and then I wash it out under the shower. And then we can color it in with the black and blue hair dye.”
Sam then took off the gloves and washed her hands, and headed out for two bottles of hair dye, one black and one neon blue. All the while, she pictured Alex with that same hair color scheme, that beautiful bright neon blue in lieu of the gray over his brow. She thought about the way he would dye his hair, with that rich jet black hair dye as it blanketed over that little cluster of gray hairs. The more she thought about it, the more hilarious it seemed to her, in how he could cover up a small piece of his hair with black dye. It was an odd little part of him, something that aged him even as he still stayed young, and thus he seemed so timeless to her.
His trademark.
And Joey had those deep black curls piled atop his head and the dark venom that made up his brown eyes.
Within time, she returned to the apartment right as Marla stuck her head under the shower head and washed out the bleach powder from her hair. Sam took her seat on the arm of the couch right next to Genie, who had curled up in her usual spot at the top. She could hear the water dripping from the shower down the hall, but soon enough, the pipes fell quiet and Marla rung out her hair. More silence, and then she surfaced from the bathroom with a towel on her head.
“Here, let me show you what I meant by that,” she told her, and she unfurled the towel from her wet hair. Bleached and pale yellow, such that it made her eyes appear deeper and more voluminous than before, and it washed out her already milky complexion to an even more pale color.
“Wow—you look—possessed,” Sam sputtered out. “Like you're about to take me down to the depths of hell.
“Charlie told me I looked like Johnny Winter when we first did it, but 'possessed' is more like it, though. Anyways, you got the dye?”
“Yup! Right here.”
Sam handed Marla the bottles of black and neon blue hair dye, and she joined her once again for a bit of help. Once again, Marla let the dye sit in her hair for a bit before she washed it out under the shower's head. Come dinner time, she had a head of jet black hair accompanied with an electric blue streak at the top of her head.
“Stylin',” Sam remarked as she disposed of the shower cap; she thought of the mysterious man in her dreams and the ever changing streak in his hair. It was right then that Lars burst into her mind: maybe it was the sight of Marla's eyes having been far more prominent than before she colored her hair blonde for a bit, or maybe it was her helping out Marla with the hair dye, but she thought about how he encouraged her to be more assertive, especially with the boys not around. A break away from the tedium and she was able to find something within herself that could prove to be helpful; or maybe it came from living on her own for a few years that helped her be more of that nature.
Indeed, the next day at school, everyone in the hallways flashed Marla a thumbs up or an eager nod at her new black hair. Before they headed into their drawing class for the morning, Sam heard someone calling her name right behind her. She turned her head and there was Bill running towards her.
“Miss Shelley? A word?”
She returned to Marla.
“I'll meet up with you in a second,” she told her.
A part of her wanted to ask him, “what took you so long?” but alas, she stopped herself in her tracks and they hung off to the side next to the classroom door.
“What's going on?” she asked him.
“I should tell you that it has been confirmed now. You are coming with me out to California for your senior project.”
“I have a couple of questions about that,” she started as Lars returned to her mind once again.
“Go ahead.”
“First off, what am I going to do out there? Second, what if I wanted to get my master's degree?”
“Well, what I am going to give you for it won't be available until we get out there. And next, our master's program here works by way of signing up for it and beginning on your dissertation over the summer.”
“Oh, I see.” Her heart sank at that. “So—when do we go?”
“We head on out to the Golden State on the thirty first of July, and you begin your project on the fourth of August. I'm going to need you to sign some paperwork at some point so it's confirmed that you are in fact with me there.”
He stuck out his hand for her to shake, and even though she took it, an uneasy feeling emerged in the pit of her stomach and inside of her chest. Her fate was sealed right then. In two months' time, she had to relish every second she had with Joey over Christmas break. Their last one together.
She had to give him what she couldn't give to Cliff in their final Christmas together in the two years before. Two years ago she and Cliff spent Christmas at her parents' house! Two Christmases without him. After class, she told Marla about it, who almost fainted when she learned of the exact date of it all. She then told Belinda, who cupped her hands to her mouth to keep herself from doing anything drastic, and then she threw her arms around Sam.
“It's okay, Bel,” she sputtered from her tight grip, “—it's not like I'm leaving right now or even next week. It's the middle of next summer. It's still a ways off.”
“But you're still leaving us, though!” Belinda exclaimed with a break in her voice.
“She's leaving me, especially,” Marla joined in as she brushed away some tears.
“I just wonder how Aurora's gonna react to this,” Sam confessed. “I haven't spoken to her since Alex's birthday.”
“I saw her just yesterday, actually,” Belinda told her. “She and Emile were shopping for baby clothes. She's not showing, though, so part of me feels like she's faking it.”
“Understand, she's barely two months along, Bel,” Marla pointed out. “She will be eventually, though.”
Sam kept her eye on the look of disappointment on Marla's face as she said that, and she was disappointed, too. Aurora had gotten married and let it all go straight to her head: she could shake her head at Joey's antics to Alex all she wanted, but it was Aurora who hadn't thanked Alex for being in her wedding, and she made his special day all about herself. At the same time, she had no other means of coming in touch with Aurora, either. She had moved clear over to Long Island with Emile and with her packed schedule in school, there simply was no way for Sam to clear the air with her, her initial best friend.
As the days grew darker, and the rain froze over into ice followed by sleet and snow, so too did her wish to leave start a fresh new chapter in life. Granted, her move to New York proved to be a new chapter in and of itself, but the more she thought about it, the more she felt her travels out to California could serve as the next one. She was about to leave home for home again, but she had to finish the first arc before she moved onto the next one, and that was spending one good Christmas with Joey.
Winter came with a firm, vengeful grip on the Northeast come finals week and the middle of December, such that the snows blanketed everything to where it felt like they could bury everyone there alive. By the last day of school, Sam had signed the paperwork that Bill had left for her and thus, her fate had been sealed for the next summer. So caught up between both sides but the whole thing was inevitable.
She sat down on the edge of her bed, right next to Genie, with a cup of Mexican hot chocolate in hand, complete with the little marshmallows. Perhaps, even though it would be the summer time, she could teach her mother how to make Mexican hot chocolate, just like the kind she made for Cliff that morning.
She glanced down at Genie and that soft black fur. Careful not to wake her, she petted her head and her back. Genie never moved; instead, she gave her a soft purr. She hoped that she could take another photograph, that one of Genie for her parents to see for themselves when she got to see them again.
She sipped on her hot chocolate when there was a knock on the door.
“I'll get it,” Marla called out.
Another sip and then—
“Hey, Joey!”
“Mm, Joey's here?”
“Yeah! Frankie is, too!”
Her two best friends, back to her for one more Christmas in New York. Sam set down the cup on her desk and then she headed back into the front room.
Joey's eyes never looked so brighter than they had before then, even with the look of fatigue upon his face. His black curls stood on every which end atop his head.
“Holy fuck, that was a long flight,” he declared as part of his greeting; the fatigue in his voice meant it had been a grueling stint of the tour. Meanwhile, Frank stumbled into the apartment as well. He let out a long low whistle and then he spotted Sam in the hallway.
“There's our girl!” he proclaimed with his arms outstretched for her. Sam lunged for Frank first. If anything, he was her best friend. Her first real best friend there in New York, and she knew he would be in that position no matter where she went in the world. How she missed the soft musk on the side of his neck and the softest part of his lush black hair.
She then turned to Joey for an embrace as well, and he followed it up with a kiss on the side of her neck. He then held back and gazed right into her eyes.
As brown as the earth, but strangely liquid, as if he was about to burst into tears.
“How is everything?” Marla asked them as she rubbed her hands together.
“Yeah, how was the tour?” Sam joined in.
“Oh, my god, I wish you girls were with us,” Frank confessed. “Those European crowds are—crazy. Just insane. You thought the crowd in Boston was nuts—the crowd in Boston was like a graveyard compared to the people in Germany and Switzerland.”
“They are so passionate, though,” Joey added. “Like Frankie and I met some people before a few of the shows and they're just obsessed with the music.”
“The girls, too!” Frank declared.
“Oh, yeah, they were just ape shit about the Cherry Suicides, too. I think we were in Ireland? They did that song 'Dead Witches' where Zelda just goes crazy on the drums.”
“Yeah, it was Northern Ireland, Joey,” Frank said. “I remember 'cause that was Halloween night. They stretched the song to like twenty minutes, like Minerva just unleashed this huge solo.”
“They played it for like twenty minutes in Oslo and Sweden, too,” Joey added. “Like Minerva was wearin' this little Viking helmet as she did it, too, it was just the coolest thing. Hardcore punk rock made by a black Viking, dare I say.”
“Oh, and the guys loved them,” Frank recalled.
“Who, the Swedes or the Norwegians?”
“Both. Both crowds were just in awe of those girls.” He cleared his throat; he, too, had his fill of touring for the time being.
“Yeah, the Irish weren't too sure of them at first, but they warmed up to 'em pretty well, though. The Scandinavians, it was like instant love there. Kinda makes you wonder what's going on up there.”
“And I'm surprised Zelda doesn't have like giant tree trunks for calves,” Frank joked. “She basically hasn't taken off those duct tape boots Chuck gave her.”
“Although we also performed a few dates here in the States,” Joey continued, “there was just no way we could come in contact with you girls 'cause we were like manically hoppin' around the place. We finished up in Dallas just yesterday, and I am just bushed right now.”
“Wow,” Sam breathed out, “where is Zelda, by the way?”
“Oh, they went back to Rhode Island already,” Frank told her. “Although Joey has sump'n for ya in his car downstairs.”
“Yeah.” Joey showed her that crooked smile and Sam followed him outside, to the cold gray blanket overhead and the thick layer of pure white snow all around them.
His car parked there at the curb, and Sam could make out the sight of something in the back seat.
“So for the last few dates of the tour,” he began over the noise of the street, “I realized that—this is gonna be our last holiday break together.”
“And it's confirmed now,” she told him as they stood before the side of the car.
“It's confirmed!” he exclaimed and he gaped at her.
“It's confirmed. I leave July thirty first.”
Joey swallowed, and Sam could see the tears in his eyes.
“I should tell you this then,” he started as he tucked his hands into his coat pockets.
“What?”
He lingered closer to her body. “I cherish every moment I have with you, Sam,” Joey told her. “I know I can lose you.”
She peered up to the sky, at the first little flurries of snow as it fluttered down from the gray overhead. She brought her gaze down to the right side of the street, at all the twinkling Christmas lights as they decorated the trees along the sides of the street. Her last Christmas in New York with Joey. The snow was about to bury them both if they didn't act right then and there.
“I cherish every moment I have with you,” he repeated; and he leaned in for an embrace upon her lips. Sweet and soft, like molten dark chocolate; warm and silken, like the cup of Mexican hot chocolate that she had made for Cliff that one morning. For the first time in a year, everything reminded her of Cliff, but at the same time, it reminded her of Joey. Something new, something unique, something completely different than what she had known before.
He held back and gazed right into her face.
“I wish you didn't have to leave,” he told her.
“I wish I didn't, either,” she confessed, and she couldn't resist the tears in her eyes. “What do you want to give me, by the way?”
“Just that,” he whispered to her. “The only thing in the car here is my guitar. And yeah—it's officially my guitar now.”
She brought her lips to his again. They didn't need any mistletoe to believe it between them.

Prelude IV: Relight
Post-Surgery: DAY ONE
[Sean sits in the hospital bed, legs crossed, staring into space when he hears a familiar voice.]
Joey: Sean, Sean Diaz? Well damn. I never thought I’d see your sorry ass again!
Sean: Geez Joey. Is that how you talk to all your patients?
Joey: Just the ones I like.
[Sean chuckles]
Joey: C’mere big man.
[Joey gives Sean a big bear hug]
Sean: How’ve you been Joey?
Joey: Can’t complain. These days, they got me up in hospice care. You’re probably the first person I’ve seen today that didn’t need their bedpans changed.
Sean: Sounds terrible.
Joey: It’s all not all bad. Lot of these folks have stories that you wouldn’t believe. One of my patients has lived through five wars and two depressions, tells me I’m a credit to my race.
Sean: Yeesh.
Joey: (shrugs) She means well. It’s almost flattering compared to some of the stuff I’ve heard. Been on this job almost ten years now, some people still treat me like I have no idea what I’m doing.
Sean: That sucks Joey.
Joey: Yeah... Anyway, you seem to be doing pretty well for yourself. From what I heard, this procedure cost a small fortune. You must have friends in high places.
Sean: Yeah, something like that.
Joey: And no guard at the door this time. I assume everything got cleared up with the police? Not planning to make a break for it again are ya?
Sean: Nah, no daring escapes this time.
Joey: Good. I don’t think I’d survive another blow to the head.
Sean: Listen Joey I’m really sorry-
Joey: (laughs) Relax Sean! I’m just messing with you! It’s ancient history as far as I’m concerned. Say, did you ever end up finding that brother of yours?
Sean: Yeah. He’s actually coming to visit me tomorrow.
Joey: Can’t wait to meet him!
Sean: Famous last words.
Joey: So… what you been up to these days?
Sean: Mostly just cramming for the SATs, drawing, listening to music. Normal teenage shit.
Joey: That’s good to hear. I was worried about you man. You went AWOL after the hospital. I got police and Feds breathing down my neck for weeks. Then a month later, I hear about a couple of kids trying the border to Mexico on the news.
Sean: Sorry I never reached out. I just didn’t want to get you more involved than you already were-
Joey: You made the right call. They questioned me for hours. My apartment was filled with G-men, my girlfriend was freaked. I honestly thought she was going to dump my ass.
Sean: I’m really sorry Joey.
Joey: Don’t sweat it Sean, it was for a good cause. Besides, everything worked out in the end.
Sean: Yeah I noticed, how long have you been-
Joey: Almost a year now. We’re expecting our first baby in the summer.
Sean: Congratulations dude!
Joey: Thanks, but honestly, I’m kinda nervous, don’t think I’m ready to be a father.
Sean: You’ll be a great dad, Joey. You’re awesome at taking care of people.
Joey: You’re damn right. Speaking of which, we should probably take a look at that eye of yours.
[Joey takes off the bandage and gives Sean’s eye a thorough examination]
Joey: Well it looks a helluva lot better than the last time I saw it.
Sean: That’s good to hear. I wasn’t sure it would work.
Joey: Well it’s too early to say if your vision will fully recover. But at the very least you won’t have to walk around with a patch anymore.
Sean: Good. It’s hard enough finding a prom date let alone one that’s willing to go with a pirate.
Joey: Still with the pirate jokes huh? Hopefully, you’ll have to write some new material after this.
[Joey applies a new bandage on Sean’s eye]
Joey: And you’re all set. Now as much as I love our talks, I gotta make my rounds. Buzz me if you need me.
Sean: Later Joey.
Joey: See ya tomorrow Sean.
[Joey leaves the room. Sean turns to look out the window. The door shoots open, and a small figure comes bursting in.]
Daniel: Sean!
[He jumps onto the bed and into Sean’s arms]
Stephen: (out-of-breath) Sorry, I tried to stop him, but he outran me.
Sean: You okay Stephen?
Stephen: I am… just need a minute to catch my breath. The old ticker ain’t what it used to be- I need to sit down.
Daniel: Take it easy grandpa.
Sean: What are you doing here, enano? I wasn’t expecting you guys until tomorrow.
Daniel: I made grandpa book an earlier flight. I just couldn’t wait!
[he hugs Sean again]
Sean: Haha easy. I just had surgery, remember?
Daniel: Oh right, s-sorry.
[There’s a brief flash, followed by a shutter click]
Sean: What’re you doing, gramps?
Stephen: Oh nothing, just commemorating the moment. Thanks to your brother, I finally got the hang of this newfangled smartphone camera.
Daniel (whispering): He had it stuck on selfie mode for days. Anyway, did it go? Is your eye…
Sean: I mean… it’s not 100% yet but I can sort of see again.
Daniel: T-that’s awesome! Can I see it?
Sean: Dude last time I showed you my eye, you almost cried. Besides, the doctors say I still need to keep the bandage on for a bit, while it heals.
Daniel: Right. That makes sense. Oooh this room looks cool. Do they have Netflix or a Playbox?
Sean: It’s a hospital, dude.
Daniel: Lame.
Sean: So catch me up. Did I miss anything interesting at home?
Daniel: Nah… Chris is still on that fishing trip with his dad so there’s no one to hang out with. Oh I almost forgot. He made you this card. Isn’t it awesome?
[Daniel gives Sean a hand-drawn “get-well-soon” card from Chris]
Sean: Yeah. It’s pretty cool. We can have Claire put it up when we get back.
Daniel: Grandma’s still in that feud with the lady from church.
Sean: Which one was that again?
Daniel: Agnes, the one who gives off major Lisbeth-vibes. She says grandma stole her casserole recipe for the church bake-sale. Lying bitch.
Stephen: Language!
Sean: Maybe one of us should try to smooth things over before it gets nasty.
Stephen: Hell hath no fury… lemme tell ya. I’ve been married to your grandmother long enough to know once that woman sets her mind on something… there’s no stopping her. Best to just let things run their course.
Sean: Claire can get a little… passionate sometimes. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen her lose her temper for real.
Stephen: There’s a fire in that woman. It’s part of the reason I married her. Just pray she never turns it on you. I hope I’ll never live to see that day, god willing.
[Sean notices Daniel circling the hospital bed, pressing his hand on various parts of the mattress]
Sean: (laughs) What are you doing, enano?
Daniel: Just trying to figure which side of the bed I want to sleep on tonight.
Sean: Dude. There’s no way this bed’s gonna fit both of us.
Daniel: The one in Mom’s trailer was way smaller!
Sean: Yeah well… you were a lot smaller back then.
Stephen: They have a nice area for visitors down the hall.
Daniel: But I want to stay with Sean!
Sean: I guess I could ask Joey to bring in a couch or something.
Daniel: Who’s Joey?
Sean: The nurse who took care of me after the accident. I told you about him, remember?
Daniel: Oh right! I can’t wait to meet him!
 DAY TWO
Joey: How are we doing today? Any headaches, dizziness, socket pain?
Sean: Nah it’s all good. Still getting used to having depth perception again. It’s kinda weird.
Joey: You’ll get used to it. Anything else to report?
Sean: Nothing major. I’ve just been having some really weird dreams.
Joey: We have a psychiatrist on-site if you need a professional to talk to.
Sean: Nah it’s alright, probably just the drugs messing with my brain.
Joey: Well your vitals look good. We’ll go over some basic tests. You know the drill.
(Sean covers his right eye and tries to read the chart. Joey then shines a light and asks him to follow along. Finally, he asks Sean to put the cap back on the pen.)
Joey: You passed with flying colors. The doctor will be in for a final exam tomorrow and then we can discharge you.
Sean: (sarcastically) Too bad, I was ready to become the first Mexican pirate to attend college. So much for being a trailblazer.
Joey: Good to see you haven’t lost that snarky-ass sense of humor.
Joey: Anyway, I’m taking my lunch now. Want me to get you anything from the cafeteria? Wait… don’t tell me. Chocolate pecan?
Sean: You know it.
Joey: I met your brother in the hall. Cute kid.
Sean: (deadpans) Give it a few days. Then see if you get a “second opinion.”
Joey: He does seem a little… “energetic”. But that’s normal for kids his age.
Sean: Yeah one minute I’m his favorite person in the world. The next, he’s off doing God knows what, and doesn’t want me “bossing him around”. You know how it is.
Joey: Can’t say I do. Grew up in a house with three older sisters. Guess I must have been the annoying one. Daniel’s lucky to have you looking out for him. Must be tough sometimes.
Sean: Oh you have no idea.
[Joey claps Sean’s shoulder, he feels a jolt shooting up his spine, everything goes white]
(Sean sees a door marked: “Miranda A. Connolly, Hospital Director”)
Connolly: You’ve been a valuable asset to this hospital. Stellar feedback from all of your patients and attendings.
Joey: I sense a “but” coming.
Connolly: But, given the dubious circumstances surrounding your transfer and your past involvement with the law. The Board thinks it might be better for one of the other nurses to take this spot.
Joey: Please. I’ve got a kid on the way. We just bought our first house. Can you at least consider bumping up my pay? I haven’t gotten a real raise since I started here. There are kids coming out of nursing school that make what I make!
Connolly: The hospital has limited resources as it is, and the State just slashed our funding again. I just can’t justify raising anyone’s salary right now.
Joey: I break my back for this hospital, work extra shifts, get to know the patients. You promised me at the annual review that I’d-
Connolly: That was before this new information came to light. I’m sorry Joseph, maybe next year.
[Sean snaps out of his trance]
Joey: Sean? Sean are you okay?
Sean: Sorry, Guess I spaced out. Must just be the medication.
Joey: I can have the doctor come by and adjust your dosage.
Sean: I’m fine Joey. I swear. Weren’t you about to take lunch?
Joey: Oh right. We’ll pick this up later.
[Joey leaves the room, looking slightly puzzled.]
Sean: (thinking) W-what what was that? A dream? But It felt so… real.
[Sean takes out his phone and enters the name of the hospital, He finds their website. Under the ‘About’ section he scrolls to the Executive team bio. There is a photo of the woman he saw in the vision followed by a small blurb]
“Miranda A. Connolly is the President and Chief Director of Mt. Cedar General Hospital. She was appointed back in 2016 as Associate Director and has since made ground-breaking changes to the field of medicine and medical care. Under her leadership, this hospital was able to expand greatly, hiring new diverse staff members and vastly improving quality of care for all its patients.”
Sean: (thinking) Holy shit… it’s real. Does that mean I…?
Daniel: Hey Sean! What you looking at?
Sean: Dude! Don’t sneak up on me like that!
Daniel: I wasn’t sneaking. I was practicing my stealth!
Sean: Yeah sure.
Daniel: Are you looking at the new Playbox Pro? My birthday is right around the corner you know.
Sean: Birthday? It’s still January!
Daniel: Never too early to start preparing.
Sean: (rolling eyes) Yeah cuz everything’s always about you.
Daniel: Oooh I bet you were watching those dirty videos again. I’m tellin’ grandpa!
Sean: Hey hands off my phone you little-
[Daniel tries to grab Sean’s phone. Sean wrests his hand away. There is another a jolt]
[Daniel stands in front of the vending machine, staring at the jumbo chock-o-crisp. He looks around to check that the coast is clear. Then he waves his hand causing the chock-o-crisp to fall off the rack and into the dispenser slot.He gleefully retrieves it and devours the candy bar in a matter of seconds]
Sean: Dude, I told you not to eat any more chock-o-crisps! Do you want another trip to the dentist?
Daniel: What are you talking about? I haven’t had one in weeks!
Sean: Yeah sure. So you didn’t pig out at the vending machine before coming in here?
Daniel: How did you-
Sean: Maybe I have magic powers or maybe… you’ve still got crumbs on your collar.
Daniel: Aw, damn it. Promise you won’t tell grandpa.
Sean: Oh so you can tell on me but I can’t tell on you?
Daniel: (smugly) Exactly.
Sean: C’mere ya little shit!
Daniel: Sean stop! Ha that tickles. Quit it!
(After their little bout, Daniel curls up next to Sean, resting his head on Sean’s lap. Sean ruffles Daniel’s hair absentmindedly)
Sean: You ever wish you were… you know “normal” again?
Daniel: You mean not have my powers? Nah. They’re a part of me now. Besides, being normal is overrated.
Sean: (chuckles) I guess it is. But do you ever get that feeling like you thought you wanted something for a really long time but when you finally get it, it nothing like you thought it’d be?
Daniel: Uhhh… you mean like how I begged grandma to get me a PlayBox Live Subscription, but then the exclusives turned out to be shit? And now I have to act like I love it?
Sean: Yeah something like that.
Daniel: (yawns) Meh I’ll just ask for a gaming PC for my birthday.
Sean: Dude you’re like the greediest ten year-old I know.
Daniel: How many ten year-olds do you know?
Sean: Uh… just you and Chris.
Daniel: So, you want me to be more like Chris?
Sean: Wouldn’t hurt.
Daniel: (imitating Chris) “Only the purest of hearts may wield the power of Captain Spirit!”
Sean: Guess that rules you out.
Daniel: (playfully) Shut up.
DAY THREE
Doctor: Okay Mr.Diaz. I want you to follow the light. Look to your right, up and to the right. Good, good, excellent pupil response.  Now look at the chart, cover your right eye and read this line.
Sean: Uh… A, O, E, P… T? Sorry I can’t really make out the last one.
Doctor: That’s okay, it takes time.
Doctor: Now this is probably the last thing you want to hear, but I recommend that you wear a patch over your right eye. It’ll be temporary of course, just until you learn to see with your left eye again.
Sean: (laughs dryly) And here I thought my seafaring days were behind me.
Doctor: You know… pirate actually wore patches so their eyes could easily adjust to the darkness and see below deck- Sorry my son’s going through a pirate phase.
Sean: I know the feeling. My little brother’s been through every phase imaginable.
Doctor: Kids, you gotta treasure every moment. Because before you know it, they’ll be all grown up, ready to go off on their own. Look at me, rambling on. Anyway, I signed your discharged papers. They’ll schedule you for some outpatient care in the coming months. You’re almost ready to go.
Sean: Sounds good.
Doctor: And you’re sure you don’t want to get do something about that nasty scar? A good-looking kid like you, it would be a shame to-
Sean: That’s okay, I think I’ll keep it… as a reminder.
Doctor: Alright but if you ever change your mind, I could refer you to a great plastic surgeon.
Sean: Thanks Doc, for everything.
Doctor: The pleasure’s all mine, Mr.Diaz. The groundwork we laid here could help hundreds of other patients in the future. We are making history. Your nurse should be along in a moment to help you get discharged.
[Sean sits in quiet contemplation. Reflecting on his dreams and new “vision”]
Sean (thinking): Be careful what you wish for...
Joey: Looks like everything’s good to go. Remember to use your eye-drops-
Sean: Twice a day. Yeah Joey, I know.
Joey: Guess it’s goodbye again. Don’t be a stranger this time okay?
Sean: I won’t.
Joey: Here’s my number. Call me if ever need professional advice or just want to shoot the shit.
Sean: Thanks Joey. Let me know how everything goes with the baby.
Joey: Oh don’t you worry about that. Soon I’ll be blowing up your phone with pictures.
Sean: Haha can’t wait.
Joey: Now hospital policy says I gotta wheel your ass outta here. For liability reasons.
Sean: At least it’ll be a smoother exit than last time.
Joey: (laughs) Get in the chair smart-ass.
Beaver Creek, One Week Later
Sean: Okay, you ready?
Daniel: (takes deep breath) Alright. Show it to me.
Sean: So… how does it look?
Daniel: Looks… normal.
Sean: You almost sound disappointed. Were you expecting a bionic eye or something?
Daniel: No. I just… it looks good. I like the scar; makes you look extra tough.
Sean: You think so?
Daniel: Yeah… totally badass!
Sean: Thanks, enano.
Daniel: You need a new codename, like Scarred Wolf or Deadshot Diaz!
Sean: Let’s leave the nicknames up to Chris.
Daniel: Hey! I make up awesome names too!
Sean: Whatever you say,“Superwolf”

Jack: You know I just don't get it. I mean, I didn't plan to quote 'ruin my marriage' unquote shortly after having one. I don't see why I'm the only one getting all the beef when it's Elsa who wanted the divorce to happen so soon.
Jamie: I mean... Mom still doesn't believe you had no idea she was a lesbian.
Jack: No, no. See, the plan was...
Hiccup: There was a plan for this?
Jack: The plan was... After a year, Elsa would file the divorce because 'Jack isn't suitable for marriage life' like I also kept telling our parents. Then, I finally come out to them as gay because 'this experience traumatized me from liking women' instead of saying I've been that way the whole time. Now turns out, she wants a divorce cause she's the gay one.
Hiccup: So you did plan to ruin it anyway?
Jamie: Then, tell mom and dad that.
Jack: I would, but it's Elsa's call and she doesn't really want to come out yet.
Hiccup: So, what are you going to do now?
Jack: Well, for the meantime, I'd be happy not to deal with any talks of my marriage or divorce for now.
Just then, Dimitri walks in during a hot stuffy day, wearing a tuxedo, of all things...
Hiccup: Okay, how about someone else's?
Dimitri: *goes up to the counter* Excuse me, hi. Uh, I'm looking for someone? I'm told they might be here.
Jack: Dimitri?
Dimitri: *turns around* Jack! Thank god. Nevermind, I've found him.
Jack: Why are you dressed that way? Wait, did you commute all the way over here in that?
Dimitri: I don't even have bills that aren't in rubles. I walked.
Jack: On a hot July heat wave? How are you alive?
Dimitri: Man, I don't know. I wish I was dead. I'm not having the best day.
Barista: Can I get you anything?
Jack: Iced tea. Grande size, thanks.
Jack and Dimitri move to the couch and the white haired man started introducing him to his friends...
Jack: Of course, you know Jim.
Dimitri: *elbows Jack roughly*
Jim: *raises a brow*
Jack: ...and you remember my brother, Jamie?
Dimitri: Of course, hey Jamie. Still think my grandpa is the boogeyman?
Jamie: He looks like a skeleton who sold his soul to add flesh over it. Boogeyman is being polite, in his case.
Dimitri snickers in response as he took a spot on the lounge couch while he waited for the iced tea ordered for him...
Jack: So are you actually going to tell us what happened or should I buy you a vowel too?
Dimitri: Okay... So an hour before my wedding, it literally dawned on me I was going to get married to Anastasia Romanov. And it got me thinking... Do I really want to spend the rest of my life as Dimitri Romanov?
Astrid: Huh, nice. Usually, the bride takes the groom's last name. Glad society's evolved enough to let it happen the other way.
Dimitri: *shrugs* Her last name carries more prestige. Which brings me to my next point... The luxurious life is appealing and all but I don't think it's really worth the boredom of putting up with the entitled rich highlanders in the monthly banquets. At least, that's not a life I want.
Hiccup: See, even the only ones who say that are those rich enough to afford saying it.
Astrid: Like you can talk. Your dad's a lawyer. You lived in a big house in the Suburbs in your childhood.
Dimitri: Anyway, long story short, I ran off from my wedding. And I went to where I knew Jack lived, but he wasn't at his flat. So this big guy wilting a piece of wood on the hallway told me I might find him here and you're the only one I know in the city that didn't come to the wedding.
Jack: ... I wasn't invited to the wedding.
Dimitri: What? But mother told me she sent you an invitation.
Jack: And you remember exactly how your folks feel about me, right?
Dimitri: Well, uh, my mother at least seemed convincing that she was making more attempts in being open...
Scene two
Hiccup: Ever notice that the most popular KDramas usually involve love triangles, petty jealousy, and cliché main guy heartthrobs?
Astrid: Maybe the ones you watch? Kingdom isn't like that.
Hiccup: Yeah, but the have the overused zombie infestation plot to make up for it.
Jamie: When will you guys just watch TV shows for their purpose?
Astrid: And what's that?
Jamie: Entertainment.
Hiccup: Well, when it's actually doing its purpose I guess.
Meanwhile, Dimitri was on the phone while Jim went to get a snack from the fridge....
Dimitri: I'm fine, uncle Vlad. And I'll feel much better if I wasn't hearing dad cussing like a sailor in the background. You know what, just put him on and let's get this over with...
Jack pauses his phone streaming Netflix before they all turned to not-so-subtly eavesdrop on Dimitri, even Jim stares at the Russian while nibbling on a muffin...
Dimitri: Yeah, it's m─dad no─Well, if you stop cursing my existence long enough to let me explain─Is mom there? Cause she'd be rubbing soap on your mouth by now!
Jim: Huh, dad troubles. *walks back to the den* Now I see why the Russian ran.
Hiccup: ... In your case, your dad ran though...
Jim: This muffin could be used as a lethal murder weapon, Haddock.
Dimitri: Znayete chto, k chertu eto, ya prosto skazhu eto. I'm gay, and always have been since forever. Even Anya knows!
Jack: Called it.
Hiccup: He was your roommate at college. Of course you called it.
Dimitri: Yeah well, tell mama I love her but screw you pops. It's my life, and I'm gonna live it the way I want...... Well, maybe I don't need your roof to return to. I'll just stay here....... Hey, he may be bottom feeder Jack to you, but he's my friend bottom feeder Jack!
Jack: I guess we established I'm still bottom feeder Jack.
Dimitri: It's my decision now, dad....... Well, maybe I don't want to keep my inherita─ No, no! I said maybe! *face falls and places the phone back on the counter and slumps on a dining room chair* Well, now I'm cut off. Shostakovitch... I don't know if the heatwave is just hitting now, or if I'm having a panic attack...
Jack snaps his fingers and went through the kitchen drawers to take out a paper bag and handed it over to Dimitri, telling him to breathe in and out of it...
Jack: Okay, just take calming breaths buddy. Calm, calm...
Dimitri: *breathing quickly, narrowing his eyes at Jack*
Jack: C'mon, don't look at me like that. Just... You know, think of less stressful thoughts. Think happy thoughts.
Dimitri: *inhales* I am *exhales* drawing a blank... Little help?
Jamie: 🎶Think of a wonderful thought. Any merry little thought... Think of Christmas, think of snow. Think of sleigh bells off you go!🎶
Dimitri: *throws off paper bag* Not like that.
Astrid: *shrugs* Made me happy.
Scene three
Dimitri: So, uh, listen James....
Jim: Dude, Jim is fine.
Dimitri: Right... So, I don't know if you knew this. But back in High school, I had a secret crush on you.
Jim: Oh, I heard of it. Didn't really think it was true, though.
Dimitri: Really? Why not?
Jim: Seriously? With practically everyone and their literal mothers going on about how you were gonna marry Romanov after college? Case in point, what you almost did hours ago. I thought they were just messing with me.
Dimitri: You did? Uh, so... I was wondering... Maybe I could take you out some time? Like... On a date? I mean, after the whole... Runaway groom thing dies down?
Jim: Well, we'll see.
Znayete chto, k chertu eto, ya prosto skazhu eto. - You know what to hell with this I'm just gonna say it.

My brave soldier muse; Eugene Sledge x reader
*Author’s note*
Wow okay so this is something COMPLETELY different than what I usually write. But after reading and actually watching The Pacific a couple months back with my dad, I’ve decided to take a crack at writing for our baby boy Joey Mazzello’s character; Eugene Sledge. Now before I get started I want to start off by saying I do NOT MEAN TO ROMANTICIZE PTSD or other mental illnesses. I know that gets people riled up and I hope I don’t offend anyone with this piece of fanfiction.
I also DO NOT own the pic that I’ve included in the fic, I’m just using it as a visual purpose for the story instead of having you guys try and look it up by watching the opening credits of The Pacific on youtube.
__________________________________________________
*1942*
The world was at war.  The Nazi’s were planning on world domination but my people of America didn’t want to get involved because we had just started getting back up on our feet due to the Great Depression that lasted over 10 years.  But it wasn’t until Pearl Harbor when the Japs bombed it without warning, or even reason.
From then on, every able bodied young man or previous vets from the first world war wanted to sign up and serve.  Including my best friend Sidney Phillips and best friend turned boyfriend Eugene Sledge. The three of us have been best friends since the school yard, when a bunch of bullies were picking on me because I was drawing instead of playing during recess.
From then on, the three of us have been thick as thieves, always sticking together till the very end.  It was shortly after our junior year of high school that Eugene and I started dating, in fact you may think he finally worked up the courage to ask me out well you’d be wrong.
I mean he tried, he really did but in the end I ended up asking him out.  So he took me out to dinner and after—I kissed him, I knew we were made for each other.  Of course Sidney had a field day and would constantly tease us any chance he got, especially towards Gene.
Sidney had already been deployed and been on the field on the Marines for a few months now, and Eugene tried to enlist but due to his heart murmur, he wasn’t qualified to go.
I was in my art studio currently working on a new painting that I had in mind.  I had my canvas out and was doing the picture in charcoal when I heard the door open and slam shut.  I stepped aside and saw Gene storming in and he placed himself right there on my cushioned couch where I would have my models usually sit.
“Still there?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.” He muttered.  I sighed solemnly and set my charcoal pencil down and grabbed some wipes and cleaned my hands up a bit before sitting down next to Gene.  If I’m being truthful, I’m glad the murmur is still there.
I know it sounds selfish of me but I’ve already lost my big brother James Barnes to the war with the Japs, my mama could barely stand and was depressed for weeks till one day she just died of a broken heart.  Of course my daddy barely escaped the first World war with only a missing arm but it was during the Depression that finally killed him, without money coming in he couldn’t pay to afford a doctor to come and help him with his arm which had soon gotten infected and he passed away due to the infections of his missing arm and no antibiotics to keep him healthy.
Eugene and Sidney are all I have of family now, and I’m already fearing of losing another brother, I can’t lose the love of my life to this war.
“Do you wanna head for the lake?” I asked him.  He turned to look at me and I took his hand and soon I led him out the backway and the two of us headed just down the hill from my house where the lake stood.
Our family home was like a little place of heaven.  Wild flowers as far as the eye can see, all varying in different breeds and colors, a small little lake that circled just at the bottom of the hill, and when the sun would hit it, it made the lake shimmer and shine like a beautiful diamond ring.
Sometimes I would come here to sketch and get away from everything of the real world, my own little patch of heaven.  Eugene would come here too when he needed to de-stress or get away from it all from the insecurities of his mind.  And lately because of his failure to enlist and seeing himself as a failure, he needed this more than I did.
We both lay down on our usual spot and I lay my head right across his lap.  His hands gently stroked and played with my hair as the two of us stared up at each other.
“I know you feel happy about me not being able to enlist.” He stated bluntly.  I sighed heavily and said to him.
“Gene…..”
“Don’t lie to me. I can see it in your eyes. I know you to damn well (y/n).” I sadly looked at him and said.
“But it’s not what you’re thinking. You know how devastating it was for me to lose my brother. And then I had to take care of my mama and in the end she died of a broken heart from losing a child, not even caring that she left her youngest one behind. And with Sidney now away fighting the Japs I fear that he too will die. Gene I—I can’t lose anyone else in my life, I just can’t I…..” tears started falling down the corner of my eyes.
“Hey, hey I’m sorry, I’m sorry sweet girl, come here.” He pulled me up and embraced me. My head resting against his shoulder as I softly wept. “I’m sorry doll, I’m so sorry. But you do realize that Sidney is about as stubborn as wild hog, he ain’t gonna let no Jap get the best of him, he’s too stubborn for his own good. Always has been.” That at least got me to choke out a laugh. “There’s my happy girl, with that million dollar smile that I love so much.” He said as he separated from me and wiped away my tears with his thumbs.
He softly kissed the corner of my mouth and I said to him.
“I’m sorry Genie I just….I just don’t know what I would do without you in my life. You’re my soulmate, the one I want to spend my life with till we’re both old and grey, sitting on the porch swing back at the house. My muse.” His thumb kept stroking my cheek and wiping away any tears that fell down my face.
“And I’m honored to be your muse. If I could draw half as good as you, you’d most definitely would be my muse as well. But know this my sweet girl, when I do pass and this murmur goes away; know that I will always be there for you. I’m making you a solemn promise right now that I will fight my way back home to you. Because I’m not just wanting to join because of my country, I want to enlist because I want to protect you. If the Japs managed to bomb Hawaii what’s to stop them from coming here in Alabama? I couldn’t live with myself if I came here to see this place burned to the ground and you lying dead burning. And I couldn’t do anything to stop it.”
“Oh Eugene….” I said as I captured his lips softly with mine.  I wrapped my arms around his neck, my hands gently combing through his auburn hair while feeling his arms bringing me tighter and closer to him as our kiss deepened.  When air became a burden, we separated but kept our foreheads together and our noses brushing against one another every second.
“I love you (y/n), more than a frog loves the bayou, more than a gator needs water to live, and more than birds need to fly. You are my dove, and I want you to always be safe.”
“And I you Eugene Sledge.” We kissed each other again and just remained together in each other’s arms kissing back and forth between each other listening to the birds chirping and the crickets playing their symphonic orchestra.
Weeks passed and I was down by the lake doing a sketch of Eugene in Marine uniform when I could hear footsteps behind me coming down towards me.  I knew instantly who it was and I had a feeling that I knew what he had to say.
“It’s gone.” He stated.  My heart shattered and I shut my eyes trying to hold in the tears. “I’m planning on leaving for boot camp tomorrow morning, will you come with me to the station to see me off?” I turned towards him and said trying to be happy for him after our talk weeks back.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Plus it’d seem unfair if I went to see my best friend off and not my own boyfriend.” He softly smiled and chuckled lightly before coming and sitting down beside me.
“Promise me you’ll look after Deacon for me?”
“Of course, he’s practically our son after all.” I said.  I leaned against his shoulder and sighed softly trying to keep my tears at bay.  “Can you promise me something Eugene?”
“Anything.” I turned towards him and picked up my picture that I had been working on and folded it up before holding it out to him,
“Take this picture and be sure to bring it back to me. If you do, I promise to make more of them. But if you don’t, then I give up painting forever.”
“What? (Y/n) you can’t give up painting because of me, it’s been your dream—”
“And my dream wouldn’t be complete without you in it.” I interrupted him.  We stared into each other’s eyes as I said, “You are the reason I keep getting inspired Genie, and I want to one day share my fame of being an artist with you by my side and introduce you to everyone as the man whose inspired my paintings. My muse. Most girls would give a ring that symbolizes their heart but I’m giving you something far more precious to me. A work of art that I’ve been working on since the but crack of dawn this morning. But don’t you dare look at it till you get on that train.”
“Why can’t I have a peek of it now?” he asked.
“Because I may not have the strength to let you go if you see it. And I know how fighting in this war means to you. My brave soldier boy.” I stroked his cheek and he leaned against my palm and kissed it.
“You have my word. I will not look at it until I get on the train. I promise to always keep it close to my heart.  And when I come back, I shall return it to you.”
“That’s my brave boy.” I said as I leaned forward and kissed him.  His arms wrapping around my waist pulling me closer to him.
The next morning right before sunrise, I stood at the train station standing in front of Eugene who was officially dressed in full Marine uniform.
“You got everything you need?” I asked him.
“Yeah.”
“You have my picture on you?”
“Right where I said I’d always keep it.” He said as he patted the left side of his chest.
“Good, now you remember your promise to me?”
“I remember my dove.” I smiled and nodded but could feel my throat tightening up. “Oh (y/n),” I sniffled and felt him hug me and I tried my best not to cry on his uniform and he whispered, “Please don’t cry, I don’t want the last thing I see before I leave to be my best girl weeping her eyes out.”
“I’m sorry Gene I—I promised myself I wouldn’t cry. I’ve even been practicing but I guess it was for nothing.” I choked out.
“Aww doll, shhh, shhh. It’ll be okay. I promise I’ll be back before you can even have the chance to miss me.”
“Not possible.” He softly laughed and looked down at me and cupped my face in his hands.  I placed my hands on top of his and guided his left hand towards my lips and kissed each of his finger tips and he said.
“Let me see that smile one last time.” I looked right up at him and did my best to smile for him.  “Aww there it is. Keep that smile on that beautiful face for a while longer, long enough for me to forever remember it.” He said as he wiped away any stray tears.
The train whistle blew and the conductor was calling for last minute boarding’s.
“I have to go.” He whispered to me.  “I love you so much (y/n) (l/n)”
“And I love you Eugene Sledge. Please stay safe out there, and never forget about me.”
“Doll it’s impossible for me to ever forget about you. Keep painting while I’m away, can you promise me that?”
“I’ll try.”
“That’s my best girl.”
“Promise to write to me?”
“Whenever I can my dove.” We kissed each other one final time and Eugene picked up his bags and boarded the train.  I shakily exhaled as I wiped away the tears from my eyes as I soon saw Eugene open his window and wave to me.  I waved back smiling and blew him a kiss just as the train was starting to depart.
The last I ever saw of Eugene was him waving goodbye to me, telling me that he loved me till the end of our days.
*Eugene’s POV*
As the train left the station and I could no longer see (y/n), I sat back down on my seat and closed the window up.  After a few seconds I then reached into my breast pocket of my uniform and took out the folded piece of paper that would have her drawing that she had made me take.
Like I swore to her, I never did look at it overnight while I was packing my bags. Otherwise I knew she’d have my head if she found out.  I unfolded the paper slowly until it was finally unfolded and there on the page was a picture of me.
It was a charcoal drawing of me in full combat gear, the helmet I was sure to wear once I would go out onto the battlefield, probably using either her brother’s or even her father’s helmet as a reference picture.  The picture looked like it could be a future shot of what I may look like in my times at war.
Tumblr media
My girl was always clever when it came to her art.  She always made it realistic, never once giving someone an inappropriate emotion based on the scenario at hand.  It was then I finally took notice of a note at the bottom corner of the page. It read as followed;
My brave soldier,
Please come back to me my Muse, my soldier, my love.
-Yours forever
(Y/n) (l/n)
Her name signed in her beautiful penmanship whenever she would sign her drawings and sketches.
I sighed and quietly said her name as I folded the picture up and kissed it before placing it back in my breast pocket and pressed it over my heart.
I promise my love, I’ll fight my way back to you. Remember me. I will come back for you my darling artist.
*My POV. July 21st, 1943*
It had been over a year since Eugene left and life hadn’t been as easy as you would think it would be.  I tried to get on with my life working and trying to sell my paintings but with rejection letters coming in left and right, and the workload at the restaurant piling up, I sure wish Gene was still here.
The only upside is when I would visit his parents and make sure our baby boy Deacon was still a happy, healthy dog.  Today I had asked to take Deacon for the weekend just to give Dr. and Mrs. Sledge a bit of a break, and since knowing me ever since I was a little girl, they gladly accepted for me taking Deacon, Mrs. Sledge knowing that I needed something of Eugene’s to keep calm by.
As we arrived back at my house after going for our walk in the park, I checked the mail same as every other day.  More bills and mortgage payments on the house, but then I came across a letter that was addressed to me and right in the corner it read.
EUGENE SLEDGE.
“Oh Deacy, daddy’s wrote back to us. You wanna hear what he wrote? Huh? You wanna hear what he wrote?” Deacy barked happily and I giggled and led him inside as I said, “Come on let’s go inside and read it.” He barked and raced on inside the house and I followed behind him.
Deacon hoped up onto the couch and I sat down beside him and took my letter opener and slide it through the envelope.  Deacon came up onto my lap sniffing the paper so I had to push him back and say.
“Hold on boy let me get it out first of all,” finally I managed to get the letter out and I had seen that it had been written about 4 weeks ago according to the date in the corner.  It read as followed;
My dearest, (y/n)
Your words and letters are about the only thing that help bring me comfort in this God forsaken island.  It’s always either hot or raining like it does back home during the wet seasons.
I’m so glad that Deacon is doing fine and I can’t thank you enough for taking care of our boy. Please give him my love and tell him that I miss him. But every night when I can, I pull out the picture you gave me before I left and it feels like you’re right there beside me. And it’s shocking how now I’m beginning to look more and more like the picture.
War is brutal and it really changes people. And I’m really glad that you aren’t here to see it, I couldn’t bear it if m best girl changed forever.
In fact funny story, one day when I was looking at the picture, my war partner Snafu (real asshole by the way) he saw me looking at the picture thought I was looking at some porn mag or somethin, so he snatched it away from me and soon he and the other guys in my unit were hassling me. They didn’t believe that my girlfriend the artist ‘captured my ugly mug correctly’ according to them. Telling me that she must either be ‘blind or I had to bribe you to draw me like that’.
I miss you my dove, I miss you so much. Every night I dream about you and our quiet little paradise right in your backyard.  Please if you can in the next let that you send, will you include a picture of yourself. Not a photograph but a hand drawn sketch of yourself. I want to see you in art form, draw yourself as beautiful as you make your drawings. (Not to say that you aren’t beautiful in real life because you are, it’s just I’ve never once seen you sketch yourself, and I would like to have a portrait of the beautiful artist that I found myself lucky to call my girl).
I look forward to hearing your response my darling. I love you forever more and I’m always thinking of you.
Yours forever,
Eugene
I laughed and cried as I read his letter.  I wiped away the tears and Deacy softly whimpered as he raised his nose up to my cheek and licked my tears away.  I laughed sadly as I stroked Deacon’s head and I told him.
“Thanks Deacy, and I know. I miss your daddy too.” I then went over to my desk and took out a sheet of paper and a pen and I began writing my response to him.
My darling Eugene,
Even though this letter arrived four weeks after you wrote this, I am still glad to have received another one at all.  It still gives me hope that you are still alive and kicking Jap ass out there.  I’m so sorry the weather’s unbearable to you but we’ve survived worse, right?
And I always give your love to our baby boy, he really does miss his daddy so much.  Sometimes when I bring him over to my place, he just lays there by the door with his head between his paws just waiting for his daddy to come home.
I on the other hand could be better.  I’ve been trying to sell my paintings but each time I’ve gotten rejection letter after rejection letter, I really wish you were here right now. You’ve always known what to say to help boost my confidence up and make me keep striving until one day I get that acceptance letter.
And them boys just be joshin you. My brother’s unit was the same way when he first joined but they eventually became not only brothers in arms but brothers for life.  Every now and then the ones who have been honorably discharged come and check up on me just to see how I’ve been holding up.  You’re handsome and you always will be handsome.
I’ll try to include a sketch of myself but you know I how feel about it.  I never thought I was sketch worthy but for you, I’ll try to come up with something. Maybe then it’ll get your Marine buddies of yours to quite picking on the fact you’re lying about a girl.
I love you Eugene, you’re the light of my life. Keep that promise you made me and come home to me safe and in one piece.  Your parents, Deacy and I love and miss you so much.
Your beautiful dove,
(Y/n)
I sighed solemnly and that’s when I noticed my mother’s old camera sitting a few feet away from the entrance to the studio.  The wheels and gears began turning in my head as I sat up and grabbed it and tried to see if I could get it to work since it hadn’t been used ever since James died 2 years ago.
When I finally managed to get a good test picture out, I placed the camera a few feet away from the studio couch and angled it to the exact spot I wanted it in. I set the timer and quickly went over to the couch.
“Deacon come here boy.” I whistled and he soon hopped up and set half of his body up on my lap while his lower body came around behind me.  I looked up at the camera stroking Deacon’s head so that it would make him stay while the camera soon flashed and took the picture.  As I stood up, Deacon hopped off and I went to grab the picture and let it get developed properly.
Once the picture was ready, I took out a sheet of plane paper and a basic pencil and studied the picture and did my best to copy the exact picture into drawing format.
Of course due to my insecurities of drawing myself, my trash bin was filled all the way to the top of failed sketches.  Also my job kept me pretty busy so I had to hold off on the sketch for what felt like forever.
Until finally about a month later, I managed to get semi-correct with my portion shown in the picture.  Deacon of course looked good as per usual, he’s always been my favorite thing to sketch besides Gene.  Whether he was running, chasing the ducks by the river, swimming or lying right under the sun, Deacon was worthy of sketching.
I hoped that Gene didn’t think I was bailing out on him for this late response so I added a quick note to the picture apologizing for taking so damn long. I also went ahead and placed the photo in with the letter and drawing just so he’d understand why it took me so long.
I didn’t hear anything back from Gene until the following year.
1944 was a cruel year.  Not only for the war and the lives we were losing but I was depressed because one day Deacon could barely walk anymore.  I went to pick him up for the weekend but he barely even noticed I was there.  I had asked Mrs. Sledge what was wrong and she too didn’t know.  She told me Deacon wouldn’t eat, drink, and he barely got up from his little dog bed.
So we took him to the vets office and it turned out that he had a tumor in his stomach and that there was nothing that they could do about it.  So we had no choice but to put Deacon to sleep.
To show him that he wouldn’t be alone, I stayed with him as the vet gave him the injection and my last words to him as I stroked his head gently.
“You’ve been a good boy Deacon. And even though daddy couldn’t be here to say goodbye, just know that he loved you soo much. You’re a good boy Deacy, mama loves you so much and she always will.”
From that day I barely picked up another pencil, hell I barely even went into my studio anymore because of that.  Not only that but without Deacon, I began to have nightmares of one day answering the door and like a repeat of what happened with James, the office of the Marines telling me that Eugene had be KIA.
The only upside was when Sidney came back and made a surprise visit.  I almost couldn’t believe it, at first I thought I was dreaming but I soon realized that it wasn’t a dream at all.  Sidney Phillips had returned home to me, my best friend since childhood had survived the war and returned home.
He told me how he and Eugene actually reunited with each other on the island of Pavuvu several months back.  He told me all about the islands he went to, and of course Sidney Phillips can’t go one conversation without bringing up all the exotic women he got to meet whether in Australia, the nurses on base camp, even British girls.
“I swear Phillips you can never go one day without bringing a beautiful girl into a conversation.”
“Ahh c’mon (y/n) you know that no matter how many girls I meet, you’re always gonna be my number 1.”
“Yeah right.” I teased.
“I swear as a Marine you will always be my number 1 best girl, even once I find me a lady of my own you will still be my number 1. You’ve always been like a little sister to me (n/n) and nothing’s ever gonna change that.” I smiled softly at him and he opened his arms and I fell into his embrace and hugged him back. “And Eugene was faithful to you, wouldn’t even look at another woman.”
I slapped him in the back of the head making him cry out in mock agony and I told him.
“You always have to get a rile out of me don’t yah?”
“Well you two are just so adorable that it’s practically my sworn duty to tease you both to no end. I’ve been wanting you both to get together since our start of junior high. Oh speaking of which, I have something for you,” he reached into his pocket and pulled out an envelope.  “Eugene wanted me to give this to you once my licenses expired. He also told me to tell you that he’s sorry that this letter couldn’t be delivered sooner and he explains it more in mushy gooey lovey-dovey detail that you both talk about in your letters.”
“I swear Sid if you read this letter I’m gonna beat your ass from Mobile straight to New Orleans.”
“I promise I didn’t read a single thing, I just know that’s how you both talk. Goof Lord I still remember all the love letters Gene used to make me pass to you in class back in high school. What a nightmare.” I shoved him playfully and opened up the letter and I immediately recognized Eugene’s penmanship.
My darling girl,
It pains my heart to hear from your last letter of what you’ve been going through.  And those stuck-up, high horsed business men don’t know true talent when they see it. Your work is a gift from God, I would give up every bone in my body if I could draw half as good as you.
It hurts to not be there to hold you in my arms, to tell you that everything will be okay, to kiss away your tears of heartbreak.  But never doubt your skills, I still believe that one day someone’s gonna come and beg to you on their hands and knees for just a simple sketch of your work.
I’m sorry to have to tell you this but this will unfortunately be my last letter for a while.  They’re sending my squad out to Okinawa and we can’t risk letters getting intercepted, I asked Sid here to give this to you personally so that it would immediately get to you and that you wouldn’t have to wait for months on end for this one.
If only I could control it, I would say screw it I’ve got a girl worried sick about me, let me write to her I would but unfortunately I can’t. But, I keep your self-portrait right next to mine over my heart.  And of course once Snafu and the other guys saw both the photograph and the drawing of you and Deacon, they did what all Marine men do from not seeing a woman for months even years on end.
But don’t worry I set them straight and told them that if they made one single crude comment about you, then my boot would be shoved straight up their asses.  And I thought your drawing was beautiful, it’s just how I remember you my beautiful tulip.
I will always love you and you are always on my mind.  I hope you realize that and that I dream of you every night, holding you once again in my arms. Because I still have a promise to keep, and you know that once I make a promise, it never gets broken.
All the best love my best girl. Stay strong my best girl.
All the love,
Eugene
P.S. keep and eye out for Sid, ever since joining the Marines he’s gotten an even bigger head than usual, make sure he stays out of trouble back home.
“So be honest, did he mention me at all?” I heard Sid asked.  Suddenly I fell to my knees and felt my throat choke up. “(Y/n)? What is it what’s going on?” Tears formed in my eyes and I openly wept.
“I can’t…..I can’t do this anymore!”
“Hey, hey, hey c’mere sweetheart, c’mere” I felt Sidney wrap his arms around me and I wept into his chest.  The only thing to come out of his mouth were words of comfort as he held me tighter and rocked me from side to side.
“I miss him Sid, I—I miss him so goddamn much!”
“So do I baby girl, so do I.” he whispered as his hand rested on top of my head and I continued to cry and sniffle into his chest.
“What if this is the last letter I ever get from him? What if he—I…..I know I’ll lose him. Just like I dream every night. I’m gonna lose him just like everyone else in my life.” I sobbed out.
“Hey now, you look at me (y/n) (l/n).” He separated from me and gripped my shoulder tightly.  I winced at the strong grip he was giving me and at seeing my face wince that at least got him to loosen up his grip as he said, “I’m sorry, but what kind of bullshit was that that I just heard out of your mouth? Eugene was too damn stubborn to give up when he had that heart murmur as he tried to enlist. He’s too damn stubborn to let his unit get him down when they would tease him about your gooey relationship, and he’s too stubborn to love anyone else but you. You strive him to be better. He will come back to you (y/n). Even if I have to perform some freaky voodoo magic just to bring him back from the dead to do so.”
“Do—do you really think so?”
“I know so sweetie bell. Gene loves you too much to let you be alone. After all that you’ve been through, he won’t kick the bucket just yet. Not unless you’re there by his side and you both are old and gray with 12 mini yous named after me by his bedside.”
“12?” I choked out laughing as I stared up at him.
“Not enough, okay how about 24 then.”
“God Sid Gene was sure right about one thing, your big head has gotten even worse.”
“I deny that. I should have him take that back, so when he does return you give him this from me to him.” He then wrapped an arm around me and proceeded to give me a hard yet playful noogie.
“Gah Sid stop it!!” I laughed out as I tried to free myself from his grip but he kept a tight hold of me.
*Aug. 15th, 1945 3rd Person POV*
It finally happened.  The Japanese surrendered to the Allied powers and it was on this day that WW2 had finally come to an end.  After America had suffered 4 long, agonizing years since the bombing of Pearl Harbor the military men from each branch were free to go home and return to their families that they had to leave behind.
Eugene Sledge rode on the train bound from East coast to west coast taking all the military men and woman back to their hometowns.  As he buttered up his biscuit one of his friends, Romus Burgin asked him.
“What about you Sledgehammer, got any plans back at Mobile?”
“No job, no plans, but the first thing I’m gonna do is see my girl again.”
“Ahh right, the artist. Think she could paint me like one of those French boys?” teased Snafu as he leaned up against the wall.
“Please your ugly mug would break her canvas before she could even start.” Teased Eugene which made the three of them laugh.
“Think she’s gonna come greet you back in Mobile?”
“That is if she hasn’t gotten her big break yet.” Answered Eugene as he popped a piece of his biscuit into his mouth.
The next day, Eugene finally arrived back in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama.  He had woken up to see that Snafu and the rest of his unit had left, leaving him the only one in his booth.  He gathered his sack and exit the train and walked along till finally he saw his best friend, Sidney Phillips parked along the station standing in front of his car.
Eugene smiled as he walked up to his best friend and tossed him his sack as he said.
“You wanna take this for me or what?” Sidney laughed as he caught the sack and patted his best friend’s shoulder and said.
“Good to see you Eugene.” Gene walked over to the passenger side of the car while Sidney tossed his friend’s sack into the backseat and got into the driver’s seat and soon pulled out of the station and headed on down the road.
As they drove, Eugene asked.
“You talked to (y/n) lately?”
“Check in whenever I can. But you know her, sometimes she’s as stubborn as an ox. Which makes her perfect for you because you’re pretty much the same way.” Eugene sarcastically laughed at Sidney who snickered and then Eugene said.
“What was she doing last you checked on her?” Sidney sighed heavily and said.
“To be honest Gene, I don’t know. I mean this last year has been pretty rough on her but I won’t say any more than that. That’s something for you and her to discuss in your own time. I made a vow to not spill any beans of her secrets.” Eugene nodded in understandment, meanwhile feeling his heart clench at the fact that his girl was suffering, from what he had no idea but he knew he was gonna try to make everything right again.
Finally after driving for about an hour and a half, they reached their destination; (Y/n)’s house.  Sidney had parked a few yards away from the front door as a way of surprising (y/n) much like he did when he had returned from war.
“Go and get your girl Eugene.”
“Keep it running for us will yah?” Eugene said.  Sidney nodded then Eugene opened the passenger side door and got out of Sidney’s car.
*Eugene’s POV*
I now stood on grounds that I haven’t stepped foot on for what felt like a lifetime ago. I walked up the gravel road until I reached her front yard.  Thankfully I didn’t have to go in because right there sleeping on the front porch swing was my beautiful girl.
As quietly as I could, I walked up the three front steps of her porch and stood over her.  She certainly has changed since the last time I saw her; her hair now appeared to be shoulder length as she would usually keep her hair up in a messy bun whenever she would sleep, she certainly has grown as her face now looked more mature than that child-like face I’ve always came to love so much.
But she was still as beautiful as the day I left for the Marines.
She had one hand tucked underneath her head while the other was placed on top of one of her many sketchbooks.  I slowly reached out and stroked away a strand of her hair and caressed her soft cheek. The first time touching something this soft in what felt like eternity.
She practically looked like Snow White sleeping in her glass coffin, and with the sun bouncing off her giving her that halo look, it was like looking at an angel.
I smiled down at her then I slowly leaned forward and I almost hated to do this but I had to, I hadn’t kissed my girl in forever and if I didn’t do it now, then I’d really go crazy.  I gently pressed my lips to hers and god it really did feel like I was home now.  Her soft, plump yet slightly chapped lips from all the times she’s licked her lips or bit then whenever she was fully concentrating on a piece she’d be working on, felt like heaven on mine.
After the first soft kiss, I kissed her again and this time I felt her sleepily kiss me back.  I smiled into the kiss before I backed away from her, her long eyelashes fluttering like butterfly wings as she started to stir and wake up.
*My POV*
I was having the first perfect dream in months.  Eugene had come back alive and unharmed and the two of us were down in our little heaven at the lake and that’s when he leaned forward and kissed me.
But the strangest thing happened.  Unlike this kiss, it felt almost too real.  Like I was actually being kissed physically.  As Eugene separated from me, he told me as he faded into darkness.
“Wake up Snow White, wake up.” Soon my dream disappeared into darkness.  I softly moaned and stirred awake and that’s when I saw someone in Marine uniform kneeling right beside me.  At first I thought it was some sick pervert taking advantage of a sleeping girl on her front porch, but the face soon cleared up and kneeling before me was Eugene Sledge.
My Eugene.
“I guess the saying is true, if you kiss a princess with true love’s kiss, she’ll wake up.”
“Eugene” I muttered softly.  I hesitantly reached up to cup his face, fearing that this was still a dream.  My heart hammering away like a sledgehammer. He softly smiled at me before taking my hand and placing it over his heart.  Even through the uniform, I could still feel his heartbeat.  I choked out.  “I’ve only dreamed of this about a million times and every time I end up waking up and crying hysterically because you always end up gone in the end. I can’t handle it again if this is a dream. Please, please to God in heaven let this be real.”
“It is my beautiful dove, I’ve come back to you. You don’t need to cry hysterically for me anymore.” He said as he cupped my face with both of his hands, his thumbs stroking the top of my cheeks.  His touch sent shivers up my spine as his eyes bored into mine.  I lowered my head and wept out.
“Oh yes I do!” Eugene then pressed his lips against mine and I wrapped my arms around his shoulders as we both kissed each other.
His chapped lips clamped onto mine with the most gentlest yet urgent pressure as I felt his strong arms now wrap around my back bringing me down to his lap cradling me while still keeping his lips on mine.  I felt his arms go under my knees as he picked me up bridal style and spun me around softly.
Even though our lips separated from each other, our noses didn’t as they kept grazing against each other and we both stared into each other’s eyes.  His brown eyes staring deeply into my (e/c) eyes. Both of us filled with tears of joy.
He set me down on my feet but kept a strong grip around my back as we both smiled at each other lovingly.  I placed my hand on his cheek and he nuzzled into my palm kissing it while the back of his hand brushed against my cheek, his thumb wiping away any tears that came streaming down like a river.
“Every day for 4 years…..I—I hoped and dreamed that you’d come back to me, but this past year I began to fear that you weren’t I….I tried so hard but I just couldn’t……”
“Shhh, shh, shshsh hey. I’m here now, I’m right here. This is real (y/n), I kept my promise to you. I came back for you. And I’m never leaving your side again.” He said as he brought me closer to him and embraced me tightly.  I hugged him back with just as much strength as I could as I wept into his shoulder.
“Hold me.” I wept out.
“Ohh forever and always.” He said.
“Tighter!” I cried out and soon I felt Eugene’s arms wrap around me tighter bringing me closer to him.  He kissed my temple, the crown of my forehead, the top of my head, anywhere he could reach assuring me that he was here.
“Although I broke my promise about the picture, I lost it in the last recon mission I went on before the Japs surrendered.”
“I don’t give a damn about the picture,” I looked up at him and cupped his face in my hand, “All I care about is you. You’ve come back to me in one piece, just like you promised.”
“And I never break my promises to my best girl.” He said with that loving smile on his face as he leaned against my palm and kissed it once more.  He then brought me in for another kiss and held me in his arms once more.
The day went on and I went with Gene to go see his parents, his ma was about as emotional as I was to see her baby boy back home alive, and his pa had never been more proud of his son in all his years.
That night we all had a welcome home feast at the Sledge manor, Eugene, his parents, myself, his brother Ed and his wife Martha.  Everyone was full of smiles and laughs as Edward told us war stories and even gifted Mary with the German Nazi flag that he himself took down during one of his missions.
I noticed Eugene hiding in the corner so I walked up towards him and took his hand in mine as I told him.
“You got no war stories to tell?”
“What’s there to tell? I fought and killed Japs in the worst possible way, seen things no human being should ever see, and there should be men that deserve to be home with their families, not still on those islands rotting away like trash.” I stroked the back of his hand comfortingly and I said.
“I’m not saying tell the stories of what you’ve done. Tell me more about them boys in your unit. The way you talked about them in some of your letters to me, they seemed like you all have become true brothers. Much like James’ unit did. C’mon Gene at least tell me what they were like.” I dragged him out of the darkness and the two of us sat together on the couch and he told me everything about every man he had ever known while serving out there.
He told me about the friend’s he’s made, what he learned from them and told me of how they’d always poke fun at each other but to them it was all out of love, the Marine way anyways.
When it was time for bed, Mrs. Sledge offered me a guest bedroom to sleep in that was right next door to Gene’s bedroom as well as some night dresses for me to wear.  But I woke up hearing the sounds of Eugene screaming and crying.  I raced out of my room to see Mrs. Sledge looking from the master bedroom worried while Dr. Sledge sat on a chair looking solemn with sorrow and regret.
“What’s wrong with him?”
“He’s dealing with the past trauma of what the war has done to him. He may not have any physical scars but the mental ones will remain forever.” I went over to Eugene’s door but before I could open it, his father told me, “I would force him awake. It will make him lash out at you, and I know Eugene would be even more devastated if he found out he had hurt you.”
“I love him Dr. Sledge, please at least let me try to get a hold of him.”  He turned to his wife who looked at him with sad eyes before he sighed solemnly to me and he said.
“Very well (y/n), but don’t touch him or move him at all. That’s usually what causes Veterans like Eugene to lash out.” I thanked him and went inside Eugene’s room.
Even from the darkness and the light of the moon, I could see Eugene thrashing around, sweat glistened on his face and tears staining his cheeks.  His knuckles burning white from the grip he had on his sheets as he kept crying and screaming in his sleep.
I slowly walked up to Eugene and grabbed a chair from his desk and sat beside him. I tried to remember the lullaby my old nanny Harriet used to sing to me and my brother as well as my father when he was going through this.  I thought and thought about how the words went since she sang it in her native language of Swahili until finally it came to me.
Imba wimbo
Wa upepo
Wakati unajiwa na
Imba wimbo wa upepo
Wakati ndoto tamu
Lala mpaka usiku uisheni
Upepo wa usiku
Wimbo wanko na
Wimbo wangu inaendelea milele
As I sang the song, Eugene began to calm down within the first few lyrics of the song until he settled down completely and his eyes soon opened up and looked up at me.  I smiled down at him and stroked the hair out of his face and I said to him.
“It’s okay Genie, you’re not there anymore. You’re in Mobile once again, far from that god awful place. You’re with your family, Sidney, and me. You’re back home with your dove.”
“My dove?”
“That’s right Eugene, your beautiful dove is here.” I said as I took his hand and placed it over my heart.  He looked up at me before breaking down into sobs.
“I’m sorry…..I’m so sorry.”
“You’ve got nothing to apologize for Eugene Sledge, you hear me boy? Not a damn thing to apologize for.” I said as I embraced him, laying his head over my heart as I continued to sob.  I rubbed his back and stroked my fingers through his hair as I kissed the top of his head and hummed the song once more, hopefully to put him to sleep.
Once I felt him relax and I looked down to see that he had in fact fallen asleep once more, I stayed with Eugene the entire night and never once left his side.
Days passed by and now it was the time for the ball.  Every military man was decked out in uniform in honor of celebrating the victory against the Axis powers.  I of course had to arrive late because of an interview I had for a new job.
Ever since getting let go from the restaurant, I was jobless and frantically searching for a new job since I practically gave up drawing after Deacon died.  Music was playing from the orchestra, the manor was crowded with people both inside and out all dressed to the full T in either tuxes, dresses or Military uniforms.
I walked around hoping to see either Sid or Gene in this crowd when I heard a voice call my name.
“(Y/n)!” I turned around and saw Mary.
“Mary.” She raced up to me and we both hugged each other and kissed each other’s cheeks.
“How did the interview go?”
“Horrible. The guy was a creep I think I should give up the job search.”
“Well you know my brother owns a law firm, I could help get you a job there as his new secretary.”
“No, no Mary I can’t ask that of you.”
“(Y/n) at least consider it. I mean I did ask you last minute to be my Maid of Honor after my first one had to step down because of the sudden premature birth of her baby.”
“I’ll think about it, but you know how I feel about working behind desks.”
“I know honey, you lookin for Eugene?” I nodded and she said, “Well Sidney went out back to find him since he had snuck out. Been gone for god knows how long, come with me and we can bring those two Marines of ours back in here and dance the night away.” She took my arm and guided me towards the backyard.
We soon found the boys outside at the bottom of the stairs that led to the garden. Mary smirked and strutted towards the boys and cried out.
“Sidney Phillips!”
“Yeah!” he cried out as he turned around.
“Will you get back in here and dance with the woman who loves you?”
“I’m coming boss lady!” Sid proclaimed as he stood up.  He then turned to Gene and said to him, “why don’t you come on in? And we can find the woman you love and dance with her.”
“She’s already present and accounted for Phillips.” I said as I now stood by Mary. Gene laughed but declined the invite and soon Sidney and Mary went back on inside arm to arm while I walked down and stood by Eugene.
“Have I told you, you look beautiful in (f/c)?” He said to me.  I looked down at the (f/c) dress that I had chosen for tonight’s ball….well more like Mary dragged me out to the mall and bought it for me.
It was a floor length velvet dress and I had on the same color velvet gloves that went up to my elbows.  Mary had helped me earlier that morning for my interview by curling my hair into gentle waves and helped me with my makeup and I just kept that with the dress I would eventually wear for the ball tonight.
“Mary picked out the dress, I had nothing to do with it. I almost didn’t even wanna come till she told me you were coming. Just without the uniform on.”
“I don’t feel the need to see why I should. I did what I did because I had to. I did what I was ordered to do, I don’t see why I need to brag about all the horrors I’ve done wearing the uniform that I did those things in.”
“And I don’t blame you, besides uniform or not I know what the love of my life did to serve his country. And I’m always gonna be proud of him for it, no matter what.” He smiled softly at me and took my hand in his and placed a kiss on the back of my hand.
“How did the interview go today?”
“Horrible, the guy kept looking at my breasts than anything else. He barely listened to a word I said at all, so I just walked right out of there in the middle of the interview. Spent hours in the shower trying to get the interview off of my, that’s why I’m so late.”
“And it’s a good thing you did. Now do you mind telling me where his address is so that I can beat his ass in for eyein my girl.” I laughed softly and said to him.
“If I knew I would tell you, how did registering for Alabama Poly-Tech go?” I could tell from the expression on his face that it didn’t go too well.  “So I guess we’re both in the same boat of terrible days then, huh?”
“They asked whether I did any accounting or journalism while in the Corp.” I scoffed and shook my head.
“I’m sorry Gene.” I wrapped my hands around his arm and leaned up against his shoulder, hoping that would give him some comfort.
“Do you think you can paint me something once we get to your place?” I sighed heavily and looked up at him and said.
“I don’t know Gene……”
“Please? I’ve missed seeing my girl work in her prime element. The way you’d move your pencil when sketching out the bases, the way you’d stroke your brush against the canvas.”
“I haven’t really done anything artistic since Deacon died, and the nightmares of you ending up dead only kept giving me negative influences when it came to my art. After I did one drawing of you dead on the battlefield I immediately burned that picture in the fireplace and swore I wouldn’t paint or draw again until this war was over. Even now I think I’ve lost all inspiration and creativity to even pick up a pencil to even sketch a flower.” I looked down at my feet shamefully as tears formed in my eyes.
I felt Eugene’s fingers softly cup my chin as he raised it up and I was now staring into his hazelnut brown eyes.
“Then let me be your inspiration. You always called me your muse didn’t you? And now that I’m back, I can stand by you and help you figure out what to paint or draw. We’re not thinking of trying to impress others, we’re doing it for the hell of it. To get back the artistic girl I fell in love with the day I first met her in art class back in the 2nd grade.” I smiled at him and said to him.
“I love you Eugene Sledge.”
“And I love you, (y/n) (l/n).” He leaned his forehead against mine and we stayed in that position for awhile until Eugene secretly took my hands and wrapped my left one around his shoulder and I felt his right hand go to my waist as he softly swayed.
“I thought Eugene Sledge didn’t dance?” I teased him.
“You missed the second part; Eugene Sledge don’t dance unless he wants to. And when it comes to his most favorite artist who is also the light of his life, he’ll gladly dance until the end of time.” I smiled and leaned my head on his shoulder and felt him kiss my temple while the two of us kept swaying from side to side.
We soon ditched the party and now we were back at my place.  For the first time in over a year, I stood before my art studio. A dark aurora surrounded it like a dark storm cloud over the horizon.
“It’s okay doll, we’ll go in together.” Eugene said as he took my hand in his and gave it a tight squeeze.  He did not once force me inside the studio or drag me into it, he waited right there behind me and allowed me to lead him inside.  We stood there for lord knows how long until finally I got the courage to step inside the studio.
We sat down at the couch and Eugene handed me a sketch book and pencil.  He then brought me close, having me sit on his lap with his arms wrapped around my waist as his head leaned against mine.  I opened the sketchbook up and I asked him.
“What would you like?”
“Whatever you feel like drawing. I know I’ll love it either way.” He kissed my temple gingerly and moved his head onto my shoulder. “Take your time darlin, there’s no hurry.” I shakily inhaled through my nose and exhaled through my mouth and pressed the pencil point onto the paper and just paused there.
I thought and thought about what I wanted to draw.  I started doing random scribbles at either the top or corners of the page until finally like the flick of a switch, something came to me.
I began drawing out the basic shape of what I wanted.  I tried to work out the highlights and shadowing of the drawing. There were multiple mistakes so I had to go through and erase them to the point I almost had no more eraser. That was until Gene handed me one of my 2 inch erasers.
After what felt like forever and multiple mistakes and smudges later, I came to the verdict of a semi-decent picture.
It was of Eugene lying on his back, holding a tiny flower towards the sun.
“It’s silly but it was the first thing that came to my mind…..”
“It’s beautiful, just like you.” I looked up at him and whispered to him gratefully.
“Thank you.” He turned to look at me and simply kissed my temple and leaned his head against mine as he whispered in my ear.
“Draw another one, this time of you my darling dove.” I turned the page and decided to draw a picture of me sitting by the lake, my feet in the water with ripples forming.
The rest of the night was spent me drawing and painting of pictures of either me, Eugene or the two of us together.  Until finally we fell asleep right there on the couch cuddled up together holding onto each other.
A few days later, I was currently with Eugene out along his front yard.  The two of us sitting underneath the grand tree that grew in their front yard. A small blanket spread out underneath us, my head was resting over Eugene’s chest, his heartbeat echoing through my ear softly beating out my name.  While his arms were wrapped around me, his left hand stroking my head while his right kept a protective yet gentle grip along my waist.
“Honestly Eugene, you look like a gangster with those glasses on.” His mother’s voice spoke up as she came towards us with two glasses of iced tea.  It’s true Gene was wearing circular brownish sunglasses over his eyes but I told her.
“I think it makes him look handsome, really brings out his hair a bit more.”
“Thank you darling showing some appreciation.” I giggled as his mother softly shook her head at us and handed us our tea glasses which I thanked her for.
“Your brother’s coming for supper this evening. Evidently he’s been named some kind of supervisor at the bank.” She said to us as she now stood in front of us.
“Better get our money out of that bank.” Eugene bluntly said.  I playfully hit his chest and muttered.
“Behave yourself.” Now not that I don’t appreciate Mrs. Sledge, I mean she’s been good to me all these years, especially for the last 10 when my family was going through death, depression and financial troubles.  She became a second mother to me especially after my mama died, but I knew there had to be a reason why she was still out here talking to us.
And my suspicions were proven correct once she said.
“I’m sure Edward could arrange a starting position for you. As well as an assistant desk job for you (y/n) at the bank.”
“We’re never gonna work at any bank mother.” Eugene said.
“Well….you need to make a plan for the future. The both of you.”
“Our plan is to do nothing for a while, we both talked about it the other night and agreed together that this is what we want to do.”
It’s true. One night while cuddling in bed together, Eugene and I started talking about where we should both go from here. I still wasn’t up-to-par of my drawings that I would normally send in to various companies or museums, and plus no one was hiring so I was practically jobless. While Eugene failed to meet any requirements college requires all because the Marine Corp thought that education was worthless when the real thing you need to know is how to survive.
But of course civilized people don’t know that, nor do they see that to be a good check off your college career, so Gene and I made an agreement to just not do anything for a while.
Just remain together and catch up on the 4 years lost with each other.
“How long is a while Eugene?”
“Leave them alone Mary Frank.” Eugene’s father spoke up.  His mother soon walked away from us and whispered to her husband. Patronizing us calling Eugene a boy and me a girl but his father told her.
“Mary Frank you have no idea. What men like him have been through. And (y/n) had to suffer not only the death of her brother and mother, but her father suffered much worse. In a way she’s experiencing what our son has been through just in her own way. Now go on let them be.” With that Mrs. Sledge walked back into the house while Dr. Sledge stayed out for a moment longer before heading back inside.
Eugene kissed my forehead once more before reaching up for his tea glass and taking a sip of it.  He turned to me and held it to me.  I raised my head and he placed his glass at my lips and I took a sip of his tea before he set it back down and I lay my head back over his heart while his fingers stroked through my hair.
Later that day, Eugene and I made a hike to a field that was about a half mile away from his place.  All around you could see tall grass and beautiful wild flowers that varied from pink to yellow specifically in that order, some logs and boulders, rising hills and sometimes birds would come down and sit upon the logs before taking off flying again.
Eugene held up a small yellow flower between his fingers raising it up in front of the sun and that’s when I found myself chuckling.
“What’s so funny?”
“You ever hear the expression ‘life intimates art?’”
“I think you might’ve mentioned it once or twice.”
“Well you remember the first picture I drew in over a year, the night we left the ball?” He then began to piece it together and I laughed softly as he smiled and turned towards me and brushed the flower against my nose making me smile at him and he smiled back.
“Now there’s that smile I’ve been dying to see the second I got home. My happy girl is finally back.”
“All because of you Genie. Had you—then I don’t know where I’d be.”
“Let’s not think about that right now,” he picked up my left hand and very gingerly with his thumb, caressed my left ring finger as he said, “Let’s focus on the now. No more ‘what ifs’ whatever comes our way, we face them together, no matter what.”
“Together forever—”
“Forever more.” I looked down and the next thing I saw, he had tied the yellow flower around my ring finger.  I looked back up at Eugene and his eyes held such strength in them after witnessing such horror for as long as he did, but there was also a gentleness to his brown eyes, a warm, affectionate gaze as he stared back at me.
I leaned forward and kissed him and he kissed me back cupping my face gently in his hands.  Soon the two of us spent the rest of the day until sunset walking through the fields hand in hand, my flower engagement ring still wrapped around my wedding finger until the day in one year time, it would be replaced with a real wedding ring.
In the years to come, Eugene would receive his Ph.D. in Biology then spend a career teaching at the University of Montevallo, Alabama, while in 1954 had gotten a call from the Washington D.C. art’s institution and they signed a deal with me for their Marine art exhibit that allowed either former Marines or spouses of Marines to write or paint what war has been like for them.
I’ve sold over hundreds of my drawings and paintings to the exhibit and I also teach at the same University as Eugene as the Art’s professor for realism and 3D drawing.
Managing to convince him decades later after finding his notes from the war, I told Eugene to get it published as a book and in 1981 his memoir With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa was published. Together Eugene and I had 2 sons and three grandchildren before he passed away in 2001.
Two months later after his death, I died surrounded by our sons and grandchildren and in heaven I was greeted by Eugene and we spent the rest of eternity together in heaven along every other comrade in arms that Eugene had come to know, and I was reunited with my brother and my parents.

I saw Jersey Boys on Tour! (6/30/19) Atlantic City.
Ces Soirees la' Silhouettes
The transition from Ces Soirees la to Silhouettes is amazing.
During Tommy’s monologue Nick and Nick are talking.
I love Frankie’s entrance. “Silhouettes! Silhouettes!”
“Rocky Marciano!” Tommy makes punching motions. (I’m actually friends with his grandson or great grandson. I can’t remember.)
Apple Of My Eye
Frankie was the only one that clapped.
The waiter was bored out his mind and the drunk guy is honestly a mood.
I Can't Give You Anything But Love
Frankie looked so confused when Tommy called him up on stage.
Everyone became interested when Frankie started singing.
“You listenin’?” Ya.” Type A: At first they're real easy. Jump right into bed with you. Then later on, they bust your balls. Type B: At first they play hard to get. Then later on, they. bust. your. balls.” “I don’t get it?!” “Don’t worry. You will.”
Earth Angel
This is actually my favorite song from the show.
Mrs.  Castelluccio is watching over the judge and when Frankie is released she looks relieved.
Nick brings Tommy his suitcase.
A Sunday Kind Of Love
Nicky looks at his dates breast the entire time.
     ________________________
Frankie stares at Mary like a lovesick puppy while singing.
He loves her so much.
“She’ll send you home in a envelope” Tommy said envelope with a thick Italian accent.
“Type A.” “Ya Ya.” Frankie shoves Tommy away.
“Y’s a bullshit letter.” My last name ends with a Y.
“They... went away for awhile.” Poor Frankie.
“You’ve got a nickel?” “YAy” Frankie had a voice crack.
“You've. got. to. shoot. the. witnesses. too. This is a basic rule.”
My Mother's Eyes
Gyp is actually pretty young. Like 40’s-50’s ish. He actually looks kind of younger than Tommy.
“I’ve got a very special relationship with him.” “Tommy.” “Ya gyp?” “Can you pick up my dry cleaning?” My favorite part of the show.
“Bring me to Springfield to see my granddaughter.” Quite a few people laughed because gyp looks like a dad of a teen.
“Those guys went away?” Frankie looks over to Tommy suspiciously connecting all the dots. “Ya.”
Frankie holds up the dollar bill and goes “EyyEes” at Tommy like ‘haha look what I got‘
    ________________________
“With you and Gaudio!” Joey is so annoyed with Tommy.
I Go Ape
“Tommy I can’t keep it straight. One week we’re the Romans, the village voices, the fucking Andrew sisters!” I love Nick’s sass.
“Comedy stuff” Nicky just screams “Noooo!”
“Handsome Hank.”
“HHHEeeYYyY”
Hank’s voice was cracking while yelling at the guys and then did a body motion that made his mask go over his face and walked out like a gorilla
“Stick to what you're good at. Rob a bank!”
Short Shorts
“Joe Pesci. Ya That Joe Pesci. The actor. 30 years later the little punk wins an Oscar. Who knew.”
When Bobby starts playing Tommy makes a bunch of hand motions.
Moody's Mood
Frankie just stares at Bobby the entire time.
Cry For Me
Nicky was flirting with this girl but got distracted by Bobby’s singing.
Tommy was looking around to see how everyone was reacting and right before he started to sing he was like “oh fuck it”
“It’s. Fucking. Dynamite.” Tommy glares at Joey. “Itsgoodagoodblend.”
Backups Medley
So I was in Atlantic City to see the show and I’m honestly disappointed that whenever tge guys mentioned Atlantic City the crowd didn’t cheer louder. (I’m not from Atlantic City)
I love Crewe’s hand motions.
“And who are YOU? Yum. Yum. And yum.” Bob looks to audience. Audience laughs.
Honestly Crewe and the sound producer are the most iconic duo. Change my mind.
“Take, whatever.”
Sherry
I loved their moves.
Big Girls Don't Cry
Nick’s baritone gives me life.
Walk Like A Man
“What like a woman!?”
“Apparently more guys than we thought have been twisted around a girls little finger.”
December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)
The prostitutes have sexier outfits.
“What’s your name?” “booOOOOOOBBBB” Bobby’s voice gets even higher.
Bob coming out in the bathrobe was amazing.
“Ended much too soon.” Tommy points to Bob’s privates.
“Nick was right. It is more fun with another person” the audience bursts into tears.
“Almost 8. Miles. A. Gallon.”
“I want you inside me.”
My Boyfriend's Back
WHY DOES NOBODY TALK ABOUT HOW THE GIRL WHO PLAYS MARY HAS TO DO AN 8 SECOND QUICK CHANGE FROM ONE OF THE ANGELS TO MARY!?
My Eyes Adored You
Mary looked so upset. Maybe even more than Frankie.
I actually feel sorry for Mary. She had less sass.
Dawn (Go Away)
I loved when their backs faced us and the lights came out.
The ‘crew’ was singing along with the Seasons
When the loan shark came out Crewe and others were around so they heard the debt conversation.
When the guys were singing walk like a man to Tommy a woman took a picture of him right before the lights went down.
Big Man In Town
I loved Nick before this. Love him even more. I just want to hug him.
“I forgot we were in O.H.I.O.”
When the guys are arrested and Tommy sings Ohio Nick looks amused.
Tommy sang really high on “old time in OHIO!”
When Lorianne was interviewing everyone poor Nicky was sitting next to them drinking his sorrows away.
“You don’t tell the truth to your wife!”
“He might be a little stupid did you ever think of that?”
Beggin'
When the guys walk in front of the gangster drawing was actually iconic.
When the guys sit down right after beggin Nick grabs his shot glass and drinks all of it in one gulp. While everyone else took a small sip.
Nicks monologue got a lot of laughs. Mainly when he sat down, he had a look on his face like “oh shit what did I just do?”
Nick talking back to Tommy. Calling Tommy out. Honestly cured my anxiety.
“HE WAS PISSING IN THE SINK!” “I do not piss in the sink” Nick walks away from Tommy. Tommy raises his hands and goes ‘oh well’ and sits down.
So if you have seen the OBC bootleg and the promotional video from like 2011 during Frankie’s monologue when he’s yelling at Tommy. JLY starts very stern and calm and Jarrod Specter starts really angry and yells but Jon Wextler is like right in the middle and I loved it.
“Taxly half a mill. In that area.” Poor Nick slams his head on the table.
Tommy looked like he was gonna cry when he was being escorted out by the loan shark because Frankie turned away from him.
 Medley
“I don’t want anyone involved in our future but me and Frankie!” The light goes onto Nicky. The audience ‘awwww’ s for Nicky.
Nicky almost looks like he’s gonna cry.
“Do you think it was Nicky’s drinking?”
“Performing wasn’t really my thing” silence. “You know what” silence. “You’re right. I don’t want to hear it.”
“Fuck you.”
It’s quite sad when the number of microphones being pushed off gets smaller and smaller until it’s only Frankie.
Mary was actually really sincere.
C’mon Marianne
Poor Frankie just trying to stay alive.
Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You
Everyone began clapping Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You started
At the end, Frankie was enjoying the claps.
Working My Way Back To You
He’s so happy!
Love Joe and Charlie
Fallen Angel
This song made me cry.
It hits a chord with me.
I feel so sorry for Frankie.
Rag Doll
All the guys walk out in a line singing.
I lowkey forgot Tommy existed
“If you’re ever in Vegas and you say the name Tommy Devito. My hand to god. You’ll be out of there in about 10 seconds.”
“I don’t give a FUCK about the old neighborhood.” Honestly one of my favorite parts.
“Without ME.” Bob just has a huge grin on his face like ‘look what I did’
During Nick's final monologue (I think) walk like a man was playing behind him or big girls don’t cry. I can’t remember.
For some reason people started laughing when Nick said “It just came out of my mouth.”
“And you’re ringo.” A lot of laughs.
“Nicky and that mind of his.” Nick walks right off stage as he finished that. I was actually crying.
Everyone laughed at the battery bunny joke.
Who Loves You
It was amazing.
All the guys came out together and bowed together.
December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)
This was also amazing.
The guys walked out together holding each other.
Other notes:
Whenever someone comes out sitting on a chair, they slide in on wheels and slides out.
Bob and Nick were y’all bois
Frankie was a small boi
Joey was adorable.
Tommy has a few gray hairs
Poor Tommy was sweating up a storm during the first few songs
Tommy has plastic covering his furniture
Love the outfits
I want Bob and Frankie’s shirts

Yugioh Season Zero: All Your Friends are Cursed
You know what? It’s been a while, lets revisit Zero.
For those new here, I’ve been also very slowly going through Season Zero alongside the show we are more familiar with, which is not at all the same as the other seasons. If you want to read just the recaps of Zero from the beginning you can do that by clicking on this link right here. I think I’ve only done like 3 or 4 so far.
OK. It’s been...a time since we ventured here to this very weird place, where were we?
Tumblr media
So, first off you may have noticed there was a wee gap in updating, this is mostly because I burned up all my backlog when I got sick for two weeks (and I’m still hella tired) so...I’m playing catch up and this is a hobby, so it takes a back seat. But also, it’s partially because I was like suuuper conflicted with what I should do about that logo. Like, I did feel like I had to blur it just because I don’t want there to be confusion if the images ever get pulled away from this post, but I was seriously considering just repainting every cap because it sure bothered me a whole lot.
It was Illustrator OCD Problems that in the end don’t matter, but you can see my quandary of the right corner in the rest of these. Anyways, thanks Team Millennium for the fandubs so I don’t have to cap over subs. Y’all did a good job, and I get why they need to watermark since like...it’s Youtube so every random bot channel is stealing any other video getting clicks.
Also, this took a while because it’s like over 60 caps long. These Season Zero episodes are just...so much content. They’re so much. And I thought this one handles some interesting themes, so grab yourself a snack, because this is gonna be a little bit of a marathon. I could split it into two but like...I don’t know where to split it, so enjoy. This post is basically a 2 for 1.
Anyway, Shadi’s back. I didn’t really expect for him to be back so soon, but he’s here with a vengeance. He spooks up on Grandpa’s old Egyptologist friend (who’s name I have forgotten) and this guy kind of already knows what’s next.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this episode, as you can see from the title, everyone is gonna get cursed. Except Miho, but like, I tend to forget she exists. We start off with Yuugi’s Grandfather’s friend getting tossed out a window, which is sort of strange because you figure that this guy wouldn’t let a girl drown down a well for a rare coin (which was the Shadi metric for if you deserve to be eaten by a chair). But apparently we were wrong and Grandpa’s friend has actually been a jackass this entire time.
"Your friend has actually been a jackass this entire time” is another underlying theme of this episode. What’s wild is that Yuugi and his Grandpa are not at all surprised by this revelation, nor do they seem to mind.
Tumblr media
Shadi says something cryptic, decides he wants a rematch with the alter ego of Yuugi Muto, and then has the weirdest plan of how to do it. The rest of this recap is basically all of Shadi’s master plan and it’s...pretty...something.
(read more under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since we haven’t gotten a Miho episode, I haven’t really gotten a chance to learn what she...is. Right now she just seems like a G rated Cheryl Tunt. Which is probably incorrect, I dunno maybe this girl will end up being their savior but for right now she just kind of uses Tristan for favors and enjoys spooky stuff maybe a little too much. I’m not sure she’s even aware what planet she’s on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shadi’s also looking more and more like a bird this episode with the artistic choice to join the brow to the nose with a deep shadow like this. If there’s deeper historical meaning to that, I have no idea. Went on a little deep dive through Google to see if it matches from art and sarcophagi from Egypt and Greece but like...nah. You do get a strong thin nose on golden sarcophagi that can give it a really cut look since it’s usually covered in reflective gold, so that could be it. But overall, joining the nose to brow is something more modern, I think. Just our own touch to make him a spook.
And honestly Yugioh really does enjoy putting a very heavy shadow between the eyebrows, but usually in the form of lots of lines and not a solid black shape.
Tumblr media
Youknow we’ve never had the chance to enter anyone’s mind space before. I kind of assumed that no one other than Yuugi even had one. So Anzu’s mind, shouldn’t be too ba- oh
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just take this whole sequence, put some generic lo-fi on it, and you have yourself a youtube channel. It’s amazing how, since the 90′s anime style is back into fashion, this bizarre sequence just hit so many good notes. Those pink and blue flowers matched with a silver metallic tree with weird purple fruit? Not gonna lie, that’s some good inspo material. Maye not the weird bird and terrifying 90′s sun--I don’t know why he’s here--but everything else? Shoot.
Tumblr media
This hasn’t come up before and the only guy with G in his name that I can think of is Gozoboro and he cannot be this guy. Maybe just a reference to some comic book stuff because he does have a Superman shape to that G, but I don’t know comics well enough to know if this was a manga Superman parody.
PS now that we know that Tea’s mind is just a lo-fi channel, we now know that Bakura and Marik have just been hanging out next to a weird silver fruit tree, staring at a horrifying green sun and avoiding eye contact with one single green bird for basically this entire Noah arc. Assuming of course that a piece of Bakura is still in there in Tea’s mind, which he may have decided to vacate at this point because what’s he supposed to do in there? Do barre?
Maybe they both just do barre workouts in the tea mindfort while a parrot awkwardly watches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Shadi has been just hanging out in Tea’s head for how long? Like half a day now?
She really has always been the ghost uber. From the very beginning. Wow.
Also, speaking of vaporwave, the pink to yellow tint on the irises? A+. That could be your lo-fi thumbnail, easy.
Anyway we are blessed with another tiny Yuugi this episode. I think I’ve mentioned it before but I’ll mention it again, I love it when artists have to draw their characters as small as ants because then the characters are given their rawest, purest form. Which in his case is just being very squat and having hair with spikes.
Tumblr media
And then Anzu somehow hides in this closet and tips over a bunch of beams at him. Are these cross country beams? What are these? I did water polo and swim team so I just have no idea what you land people did.
Tumblr media
When beams don’t work out, Shadi sets in play the next step of his super evil and sinister plan. Please remember that this guy is a 5000 year old very scary ghost with crazy OP powers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So then Shadi starts his third phase. So far we’ve had a bunch of poles and a basketball, what will be next? Will Anzu come up with two chalkboard erasers and start pounding them together to make a sick chalk cloud? Will Anzu step on the back of Yuugi’s shoe so his foot falls out? Will Anzu unzip his backpack when he’s not looking so all his books fall out? What dick move will Anzu do?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SOOOOOO
This is a thing that canonically happened in Yugioh.
It’s like finding out that Big Bird once violently choked out Elmo in Season One but now they’re good and they don’t want to talk about it.
Like...this is a lot and it’s not even discussed in this very episode!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one time.
The one time they should have just ditched.
This is the one time you should just find a boat/blimp, smuggle yourself on board, and then play cards for a straight week with an evil psychopath. The one time.
No wonder they go out of their way to avoid this school for the rest of this show. They ditch just to survive their 1st year of High School.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So they decided to split up which...they’ve made worse choices, and only Yugi finds Tea. What would Shadi’s plan have been if anyone else was up here first?
Tumblr media
Reminder that in the second or third episode of Season 1, Joey and Yugi came up here to reminisce the good ol days. I had no idea at the time that the “good ol days” involved being dangled on the edge of whatever this weird contraption is called.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eat your heart out Jeffree Star and Rituel de Fille, Shadi here did black highlighter first. In 1999. And that nose is snatched.
Tumblr media
Appropriately, Honda is still embracing his janitorial duties. Maybe that’s why he’s not a janitor anymore? Because he was getting tooooo into being a janitor? Like if you go janitor while being a zombie that’s toooooo much janitorial.
Another thing Season Zero does that may either be a limitation of their budget or just a limitation of their experience is that, unlike most foreign films, the pacing of the cuts are really quick. Like REALLY frantic. (And yeah I’m generalizing a lot when I say that Western shows and movies have quicker cuts, but lets just say that it’s true about 90% of the time. Not better or worse, just different.)
And like, this was the 90′s, a time period I don’t really remember, but back then we were into bizarre editing. It was a very experimental time in film because suddenly there were a lot of computer and filming tools available for a decent price and people kind of lost their minds. They were getting into doing tons of dutch angles and tons of filters and it was just a real...interesting time in film. It’s gauche by our standards but like...art kind of lives in the time period it’s from and you shouldn’t pull it out and compare it to our current standards too much because--welcome to 90′s Xtreme cuts. Docking something for being too 90′s is like saying that medieval art sucks balls because they didn’t want to use perspective and all their cats look weird. This was the time.
It’s just interesting to me that they decided to attempt to copy this frantic editing style into a cartoon when it’s normally done splicing together live action shots that were done with three+ different cameras. They planned out each cut in a storyboard and drew every frame. It was a lot of work. And it didn’t age well, which is a shame.
And it could have been that because this is a horror show, they decided to experiment. It’s a pretty edge show based on a pretty intense manga. But, it’s...interesting. Can’t exactly cap it, you’ll have to watch it for itself but it’s...interesting. And overall, I honestly feel like I can’t come to any conclusions about the direction that Season Zero editing has taken since I’ve only seen four episodes, so these are just my five cents, don’t quote me on it. I may take back this opinion a few episodes from now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y’all this was never told to us until like Season 2. Season Zero told us this in like episode 4. Would have been really nice to have this information a little earlier.
Tumblr media
So then we introduce the mummy mechanic of this “game.” Anzu’s plank contraption is tied to these baby mummies. Kind of looks like they’re chocolate mummies you get from the Egyptian museum store. In fact, They might actually be museum gift shop chocolate mummies that Shadi shoplifted up after he killed that fat guy.
Not sure how he set any of this up, especially when he totally botched it with the beams and the basketball and the strangling, but somehow, Shadi got this complicated knot system all ready to go. Weird how Marik was the one on the boat when Shadi has like a degree in knots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I said this in the last episode but we get this reoccurring theme in Season Zero where Yugioh is a little boy learning to grow up and be a man, and yet every guy he meets has just a pile of toxic misinformation about how to be a powerful adult. In Shadi’s case, he believes that weakness stems from caring about other people and relying on them for support, hallmarks of mortality. Which is easy for Shadi to say because he’s some 5000 yo undead (I think?) with no friends, unless you count Chair Barney. But Shadi’s pretty sure that attachment to living people will only ultimately hurt you, especially when they’re complete assholes, which most of Yuugi’s friends are. They’re good assholes, though.
It’s a pretty common anime trope and I’m surprised it took us this long to get to the power of friendship. Freakin finally. And there’s nothing wrong with tropes. It’s how stories are made.
Anyways, in case you thought this episode would not address the teachers, they actually did for about 3 seconds.
Tumblr media
Neat that this is the most unsafe school in all of Japan.
Tumblr media
I am a fan of the combo of blue, purple, green, and very large teeth. I will give Chair Barney that much. Anyway, lets see what game Shadi made.
Tumblr media
Oh cool, it’s the game I made to go in my babysitting kit when I was like 11.
Granted, so were playing cards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wow everyone is just assaulting each other this episode, damn!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back on the roof, Yugi calmly wins the game without ever flipping a tile.
Tumblr media
Now for some reason I missed the part where he says “two feet” and so I was missing a pair of things and so I listened to this part again and either my sick brain missed it three times (cuz y’all I have had the plague and my recovery has been so sloooow) there were these shapes on the tiles that looked like kidneys and I thought--but it’s not two kidneys, right? and I was like what else is a pair and round and lobby shaped? and then I didn’t really want to go there, and assumed--FEET.
Knowing full well feet are not kidney shaped, but I’m gonna assume he said feet. If he actually said weird monster testicles, you’ll be sure let me know.
And then this happened and it’s pretty legit.
Tumblr media
We have never actually addressed the fact that Yuugi forced his friends to like him. Like it’s a pretty effed up origin story that Jounouchi was like like “I feel like very strongly I should be his friend” but doesn’t really know it’s because he got cursed. Kinda figured the show would just breeze by it, but no, here we are, and Yuugi has to face the fact that maybe the only reason he’s not a loner anymore is because he won Jounouchi as a prize for finishing an accessory.
And whether or not Jounouchi would have been his friend no matter what isn’t really what’s being tested, it’s whether or not Yuugi believes that this friendship is actually real, or a curse. Like Jounouchi did try to defend Yuugi before Yuugi finished the puzzle, but does Yuugi know that? He was passing out at the time. It’s a real insecure spot for Yuugi since before Jounouchi he was just a little punching bag playing board games alone in the homeroom. Jounouchi was introduced as someone who was legitimately bullying Yuugi and tossing that puzzle out a window. There’s going to be the underlying fear that Jounouchi would go back.
In the S1 anime, they basically wrote that plot point out of the show or decided that because this was done in Season Zero they don’t need to retread on old territory. Joey, Tristan, and Tea aren’t cursed to be Yugi’s friends, as far as I know.
But this test between the friendship of Yugi and Joey is recreated again in S2 with Marik when they were both tied to an anchor and one had to choose to kill the other or live. But there’s some pretty major differences. This time, instead of Joey being possessed by Marik and being forced to kill his friend, he’s just Jounouchi sans curse.
Although Jounouchi is still somewhat mind controlled as he is just an illusion. He’s just...not as badly mind controlled as the whole Marik thing. This Jounouchi has more motor control and doesn’t seem to have any inner conflict at all. Because again, this isn’t so much Yuugi vs Jounouchi, this is Yuugi vs Yuugi’s fear of being alone again.
That’s a realllllly different takeaway. And honestly, it’s pretty interesting.
Also, instead of Tea with a shipping container over her head, this time Anzu is walking a plank. Really didn’t expect that Shadi would basically turn into Marik but without the cards. And without the underground bunker lifestyle where he kills his own Dad.
Tumblr media
The game is kind of hard to show in caps but they have to drop the puzzle in the direction they want the other to walk. Mostly it’s just another reason for Jounouchi to steal Yuugi’s puzzle again and relive the trauma.
Remember that time that Jounouchi tried to get Yuugi to punch him and Yuugi broke out in tears because he didn’t like violence? I mean honestly, out of everyone Yuugi knows. Jounouchi was probably the nicest bully he had. Doesn’t mean Yuugi isn’t incredibly insecure about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead of fighting back, Yuugi decides to skip his turn. It’s a contrast to the other Joey/Yugi fight because instead of just throwing a fireball in his own face until Joey snaps out of it, Yuugi has decided to rely on trust.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, much like Grandpa’s Blue Eyed Dragon that would not perform under Kaiba’s reign to kill Yuugi, neither would Jounouchi under Shadi. They even disappear into the aether with the same smoke effect.
And what I think is the most interesting part of this is that the question of “so would they have been friends without the puzzle?” is mostly left open ended.
Tumblr media
And if the friendship were solid as a rock, then this whole debate Yuugi has with Shadi wouldn’t even be a debate. Shadi is certain that people will betray you because they can, Yuugi is confident that, even though they do walk you to that ledge, they can change although there is a history of hurt. Shadi was convinced Yuugi couldn’t overcome his lonely past, and Yuugi had to prove that the past can’t hurt him anymore, the past being also his best friend.
Like it’s just something never mentioned in the S1-3, that Yuugi has a lot of issues because all of his friends have been his bully at one point. And like, not to get too PSA, but every friendship has to be looked at by a case by case basis. You can’t generalize and say “everyone who betrays you can change.” But the message here isn’t about keeping any relationship that is toxic, it’s about overcoming the pain of the past.
Also Jounouchi is hella cursed so he won’t be back to his old ways anytime soon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kind of hard to tell, but Honda got covered in a layer of white fire extinguisher juice and it’s a look that uhhhh we would never illustrate this way in 2019. Times were more innocent in the 90′s.
Just kidding, they absolutely weren’t, I have no idea who allowed Honda to be drawn this way.
Tumblr media
Reminder that Kaiba is just sitting pretty in one of these classrooms, maybe watching Joey’s ass scrape up against the window while Honda completely covered in mysterious white stuff screams bloody mercy. As the teacher teaching this particular class ignores all of this, Kaiba would just be thinking to himself “Aw. that’s fun.”
Tumblr media
And so ends this really long but honestly, pretty interesting episode. Season Zero has a lot of rough patches, like I’m probably not going to do every episode of it, but when it connects to what we’re watching its neat to compare and contrast the two. Kind of wish we had more of Yugi facing his past in the current anime but instead it’s Kaiba facing his past. So we...kind of get it? Just with a different character?
Shadi picks up his key and walks away unscathed. Mostly because Yuugi does not currently know how to mind-wipe. Seems that that is mostly a Pharaoh thing and as far as I can tell Yuugi is still just one person with an alternate personality.
Tumblr media
Off he goes, that bastard.
Amazing that everyone’s pretty much on good terms with Shadi by the end of S1. Like he’s just kind of a pal that shows up and “accidentally” leads you directly to kill your own Dad when in Season Zero he is...really outwardly evil.
Anyway, that was a hellton of content haha, next week it’s back to Joey dueling a lawyer while Kaiba gets lost in the woods.

What Happens When You Take A Bad Idea And Make It Worse? LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BRAWL FOR ALL!
Joey
March 11th
The Mother Fucking Brawl For All.
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I'd actually get around to this but there are miracles around us and what better time than now? The Brawl For All is generally regarded as one of the worst ideas of all time in a business with an entire genre dedicated to grown men and women smashing each other with fluorescent light tubes and slamming one another on beds of nails and thumbtacks. In a business that up until the mid 80s featured nazis goose stepping around and up until 2003 or so regularly and routinely featured women wrestling in their bloomers, the Brawl For All is the one idea that every human being unanimously believes was a disastrous failure. It's the one unanimous tire fire that not even it's most ardent supporter can put out. Not even WCW's junkyard battle royale which featured multiple injuries due to WCW not gimmicking the cars and just having guys taking bumps onto cars and through glass windshields is hated this much. The Brawl 4 All is one of those things people can't even sum up with "It was bad!" and move on. You have to go through layers and layers and levels of badness. You have to view it almost as an affront to your sensibilities, as a personal attack on you as a fan. Hell not just as a fan but as a human being!
Vince McMahon and company have failed in previous ventures before and ventures after. The XFL, the World Bodybuilding Federation, the ECW relaunch, 65% of the undercard Attitude Era angles, their really expensive WWE Films attempts. Some could even argue that the brand split originally was a failure in some respects given that Smackdown never really got going on its own and Raw declined sharply from the brand split onward. That said those failures at least had SOME inkling and morsels of promise behind them. Not the Brawl For All. It was a bad idea from the start, a bad idea during and made even worse by what happened afterwards. Also? The Brawl For All is one of those things that every wrestling fan and every wrestling personality has a hard opinion on, the kind of shit that lends itself to so much gossip, rumor and conversation. Over the next few weeks, I want to discuss the Brawl 4 All a bit more. I want to delve into it because it's as close as we'll ever get to a universal no hope no spin failure by the WWE and because...well...it's one of my favorite fuck ups of all time. It's always been something that fascinated me from watching it live as a casual fan to laughing at it as a smart fan when I stumble across it to making a near yearly pilgrimage to youtube to watch every single fight of it I can find before it got yanked. It's one of those wrestling stinkers that like December 2 Dismember or the Heroes Of Wrestling card that I'm magnetically attracted to. Every wrestling fan FEELS for the Brawl For All even if those feelings are utter disdain for everyone involved with it.
The Concept And How Fucked It Was From Jump
To get why this even happened, you have to go back in a time capsule. Despite catching fire in 1998, the WWF (for the purpose of being as thorough as possible here, we're gonna call 'em as they were when this happened) is still struggling to keep track with WCW Nitro. They're in the midst of an 83 week long ass eating from Ted Turner's Atlanta based wrestling promotion and "good ideas" are running dry. Understand that at this point the WWF has the single hottest property in the business but that sole property isn't enough to get over the hump vs the NWO, the cruiserweights, an ascending Bill Goldberg, Bret Hart, the return of Sting and what was genuinely just a better overall card. Even if Wrestlemania 14 gave birth to so many great stories going forward (Austin vs McMahon, the hard reboot of DX as a faction, Kane vs Undertaker's first match), WCW is in the midst of its highest grossing year ever. Vince McMahon has James Harden putting up 50 points a night and winning on his back but he's still looking up to the Golden State Warriors. Making matters worse, both companies are in the pro wrestling equivalent of an arms race.  Remember how when the UFC and Bellator in 2014 and 2015 signed anybody with a pulse because they were trying to fill up two insanely bloated schedules? It's a bit like that. Anybody who is good (and not a walking flag factory so to speak) is either in WWE or WCW at this point which means if you ONLY have two hours of content, you've got a lot of guys doing nothing.
The Brawl For All on its surface and without malice seems like an awful idea to try and remedy that. Pit sixteen dudes in a shoot tournament and let them go at it with set rules in place. It gets guys on TV, gives them something to do and at the end, in theory, the winner doesn't just get a big financial prize but come out in the end as a star. It's a chance to do something with a section of guys who are doing absolutely nothing at all. Sounds good, riiiiight? Well now let's break into some sexy rumor mongering about what this really was about:
-We can start with the mastermind! Vince Russo is the man who apparently concocted this concept which should be somewhat redeemable if what I laid out above was entirely 100% accurate. It's not entirely the case, even according to Russo's own words. Per Vince Russo, a large reason the Brawl For All came to be was that he had a beef with one of the wrestlers (Bradshaw aka John Bradshaw Layfield aka that guy who got flattened by ring announcer Joey Styles) consistently bloviating that he was the toughest guy in the locker room. Right off the jump, any sort of noble designs are whittled away. Now often in pro wrestling, there's 100 different stories to the same single event often shared by people IN the same room. Imagine how pronounced it is that a) everybody agrees that it was Russo's idea, b) everybody is under the impression that it was over a tiff with a pro wrestling with no shoot fighting experience and c) EVERYBODY agrees it was one of the worst concepts imaginable. The Brawl For All's entire seed was planted not so much out of a design to get guys work and on TV but out of wanting to see a loud dude get punched up. That's insanity out the gate.
-The Brawl For All was by invitation only and depending on who you believe, the process to select wrestlers was rather...exclusive. Bruce Prichard discusses in his podcast with Conrad Thompson that he was the guy who had to round up the talent to fill enough spots in the tournament. Prichard says he had to play to the egos of wrestlers and in a separate interview, Bart Gunn talks about how he got recruited basically by another member of the writing team as well. The name Bart Gunn will become pretty important down the line so jot that down in your notebooks real quick. Wrestlers were recruited with what seems like a pretty easy enough pitch and one I'd imagine that the UFC uses today  with their fighters; basically a "I mean don't you believe you're the toughest dude here?!" and a "We'll pay you!" and we're off to the races. Despite this, the Brawl For All struggled to get people to fill in the spots in no small part due to the fact that no star is going to partake in an absolutely stupid concept like this when they can just make their money being a star. The Brawl For All isn't even a TUF; it's a PFL tournament where all the dudes nobody else wants are lumped into a tournament format with the golden carrot of a $100,000 prize at the end of it.
-Perhaps worth more than the $100,000 prize was the either legit or illegitimate golden carrot of the winner getting to work a program with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Understand that no one single act was as hot and drawing as much money at this time as Steve Austin was. He was the it guy, the biggest star in the business and noway near close to peaking as a talent either. The Brawl For All $100,000 prize? That's cool and all  plus that was basically the downside guarantee for a year's worth of work. The opportunity to work with Stone Cold on a pay per view? That's the big money ticket. That's the opportunity to be a made man like how working with Hogan in the 80s was. For top guys, that opportunity may come along at any given point. Again going back a bit to TUF and the PFL, imagine if the UFC offered eight of its guys the chance to compete in a tournament for $100,000. Enticing! Now imagine the winner gets to fight Conor McGregor on a PPV. Tell me if it doesn't get every guy not named Khabib and Tony Ferguson jumping into it. That would be a great no doubt can't miss opportunity!
EXCEPT
-It was probably a lie. Scratch that. We can factually tell that any sort of Austin match for the winner was a lie since every person involved (sans one) says it was real and the winner never actually got said shot. Imagine if the tournament wasn't build on anything truthful but instead on a "The winner will be in the mix" from Dana White. While Bruce Prichard says there was no official plan for the winner to face Steve Austin, everybody else involved from talent to wrestling guru Jim Cornette seems to suggest there WAS a plan in place for the winner to win. That is, assuming of course, the winner was the guy they thought was going to win all along. More on that in the future but just know that the Brawl For All's fighters were flirted with a hush hush unofficial promise of facing Steve Austin that was probably never going to be fulfilled unless won by a specific party. Bart Gunn says he was told the winner would face Stone Cold and well....more on that at another time. Let's just say sports entertainment and combat sports have a long storied history of perhaps listening to the matchmakers a bit too closely.
-The rules for the Brawl For All? Well those were a mess. According to Bruce Prichard, the rules were still being worked out the week of. According to Steve Blackman (a dude who Bob Holly admits would've won the whole thing), there were plans to allow leg kicks and those rules just happened to get yanked the week of. The glove size seems to change depending on who you ask as the WWF says they were 16 ounce gloves but Bart Gunn argues repeatedly they were 22 ounce gloves. Some of the guys admittedly didn't even think it was a shoot fight either and at least one fighter fought thinking it was a work. According to Bart Gunn, even halfway through the tournament he kept expecting it to be a work suddenly.  The "official" Brawl For All rules had points for takedowns, points for a knockdown and points for more punches thrown across three one minute rounds. The scorecard part doesn't even matter at this point. To be honest, it didn't even matter then.
So let's talk about the big problem here
So imagine putting together a tournament designed around the concept of "Who's the toughest guy!" in a show where the audience is conditioned to believe that the toughest guy is the world champion or if the champion is a heel, the toughest guy is the babyface chasing said champion. We already in theory know who the toughest guy is or at least we're willing to suspend our disbelief. Also if we're to believe that the winner of the tournament is the toughest guy in the company, why aren't the big name tough guys we've been told are the tough guys competing in it? The concept falls flat right there on its own but the hole isn't deep enough. We gotta go from six feet to nine feet so now imagine that you've come up with this concept that pees on the first rule of your product. Make it worse. Make it so that the audience is being told to believe that what they see HERE AND ONLY HERE is legitimate.  NOTHING is as frustrating in pro wrestling as "a shoot." For those not addicted to sports entertainment meth, a shoot is something on the program that the audience is led to believe is real. Now for something to be "real" on a show that's already "real" then that in turn means what we're seeing is fake, right? So a "real fight" on pro wrestling ultimately means that what we're seeing is fake. Now most wrestling fans since the 70s and 80s have probably believed wrestling in some form or fashion is/was not real. We accept it as entertainment and as Jerry Jarrett once lovingly put it "theater of the illiterate." The key is to not remind us that what we're seeing is clearly fake (a problem wrestling fans seem to be having right now with Ronda Rousey). Reminding the audience that what they're saying is predetermined scripted fakeness and then asking them to invest into the REAL portion of the product that breaks their illusion only works if a star is doing it. It doesn't work if a bunch of random dudes and mid carders are doing it. Imagine if in the middle of one of those UFC Embedded gimmicks, we saw Conor McGregor rehearsing the press conference lines and then he went out to try and sell his beef with Cowboy Cerrone as legitimate. You've already hurt the audience's feelings and the Brawl For All actively did that at a time where all WWF fans wanted was to watch Stone Cold kick ass and DX make inappropriate jokes. You've brought DOWN the segment.
So now we're nine feel into the hole. Let's go sixteen feet deep. Nope! Let's go from here to fuckin' middle earth on this bad boy; pro wrestling is a TEAM effort. It requires two or more able bodied people to work together to create a magnificent fake fight spectacle that tells a story and ends with you becoming emotionally invested in its finish and what's to come. That requires participation. Now come up with a tournament where guys are going to beat the holy shit out of one another FOR REAL and then have to go back to participating with one another as if nothing happened! Every single wrestler involved in the Brawl For All has spoken about the bad blood and residual effects the Brawl For All had. Also remember these are not trained fighters either. Some of these guys are amateur wrestlers who probably haven't done that for years. Some dudes dabbled in kickboxing or BJJ on their spare time or in years outside of wrestling had some formal combat sports . Some of these guys were bodybuilders by trade and some of these dudes were just pro wrestlers who happened to have a few "So and so cleaned out a bar room with one hand and six beers!" type magical fishing trip stories. So you're taking a bunch of ego driven (some chemically enhanced) guys and sending them out there to beat each other up on a Monday or a Tuesday and then magically get over it in time to make the house show loop where they're going to team together. We've officially come out the other end through China, folks.
And yet despite all of this very obvious right in front of our faces warning signs, the Brawl For All existed.
Next time we'll talk about who was in it a bit more---and why IF the Brawl For All had a true tertiary motive designed to elevate one guy to superstardom, it was an even bigger failure than humanly possible.

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
“Ok, who’s the best member of the Rat Pack?” Four questions behind the dark-haired woman, as he tends to his own wounds. She frowns at the unnecessary talk, but knows that you need it in order to keep your mind off of the current situation. Your hands are a bright blue with whatever anxiety you are currently feeling in the aftermath of the mission, and she doesn’t want to call Director Hill saying that you had taken down the plane on the way back to the compound.
“ Ow ,” you pause as Two deals with the large scar running across your forehead, “In terms of what? Aesthetic, music, scandalous lifestyle?”
“Music?” he questions, unsure of where is discussion is going and how heated it might actually become.
“Sinatra, duh , you and Two echo each other at same time, as Four frowns – suddenly upset over you having Two on your side, but to be honest that was most of the time.
“Ugh…really? I was gonna say Dean Martin,” he confesses and both of you turn to gawk at him.
“ Wow Four, I don’t know you anymore,” you murmur, as the glow begins to dim but you can’t really laugh when Two is still tending to you wounds.
“Me neither,” Two remarks so that only you can hear, and that causes a hearty laugh to leave your lips, which causes your older teammates to smile.
Bucky frowns midway through the current Elvis song before changing it to the next one, which is a smoother and easier beat as Patsy Cline’s sweet voice begins to filter into the small recreational area. He leans into the love seat and remembers you sweetly dancing to the song after your last training session. He had quickly found out that while the King was your training music, you tended to switch it up to slower music to calm yourself down. You would sway and hum as you would put the gear away, and he couldn’t help but – nope, nope, not heading there. He sighs and runs a hand through his hair before hearing on oddly curious and annoying voice next to him.
“Ok, Vanilla Ice,” Sam grins and takes a sit on the couch across from him, opening the Pandora’s Box he had been trying to avoid, “ Who’s the girl?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Bucky replies in annoyance, as he gets up slightly and presses stop to the music.
“It took me two months to get you to listen to Marvin Gaye ,” Sam gives him that shit-faced smile that he hates so much because he knows, “Now, you’re listening to Elvis Presley like some lovestruck teen. You can’t tell me there isn’t anybody, Barnes?’
“No, there—I—” he tries to fight back before, “FOUR! PUT ME DOWN!”
Blue eyes turn to look beyond the glass walls to see a group of three people walking down the hall., however his attention is drawn to the woman being carried over the blond man’s shoulder. The blond shakes his head and Bucky can see the woman is injured with bandages wrapped up to her elbows and there is a bandage on her forehead. You’re injured , but you are too busy complaining and hitting the blond to pay attention. The dark-haired woman walking next to the two of you notices Sam and Bucky staring and gives them an apologetic smile before pushing the blond to move faster.
“Is that your girl?” Sam’s teasing voice breaks Bucky out of his stupor as he realizes that he had gotten up from the chair and was now close to the glass entrance. The soldier lets out shaky breath and just stands there for a moment.
“Shouldn’t you go check on her?”
“…I don’t know where her room is,”is all he can say.
“Damn, weren’t you supposed to be a charmer and what not?” Sam laughs as Bucky glares at him before leaving the room and walking in the opposite direction of where you had gone.
sixth night.
“The overexertion of your power caused your nervous system to flare up and become painful to move. We can give you some medication, but you can’t touch anything electronic for now.”
“You gonna be okay like this, sweets?” Four’s concerned voice makes you frown, as you push the blanket a bit down to cover your legs. You didn’t want to be alone in your room, but you really couldn’t go into the office which was full of machines and other materials that could harm you at the current moment. So, you dragged yourself (with the help of Four) to one of the small living spaces, though your teammates were still watching you like hawks.
“I’m fine, mom,” you reply in with disdain, as he shakes his head and laughs. He ruffles your hair in big brother sort of way and tells you to holler at them or F.R.I.D.A.Y if you need anything. You grumble but ask the AI for one thing before he leaves.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y, please play Angel Eyes ,” your murmur and Four lets out a dry laugh before leaving. And that’s how you spend much of your late night, listening to Sinatra with the hope that he will ease your nerves enough to drag you into the land of sleep – though the lonesomeness of it all had you hoping for some company. A certain person in particular in mind, though you pout and try not to think about it, but that doesn’t seem enough after the 3 rd Sinatra song.
“Damn, I’m bored,” you murmur into the emptiness of the room, completely unaware that a super soldier is walking around the halls unable to sleep due to the recurring nightmares, but with questions in regards to your current condition bothering him as well.
“F.R.I.D.A.Y, play Pal Joey !” you yell in sleepy frustration, as you stifle a yawn.  You snuggle into the middle of couch and cover yourself completely with the blanket as the screen shows you the familiar Columbia Pictures logo. The sudden sound grabs Bucky’s attention as he walks over to where the noise is coming from, but you’re already too caught up into the movie and Joey Evan’s antics to pay attention to the door opening. You see Bucky standing at the left end of the couch from the corner of your eye and smile.
“Watch this with me,” you state and he starts take a seat when you stop him for a moment. He frowns, thinking that he has done something wrong.
“You should probably sit on the other side,” you explain as the movie pauses.
“W-What?” his fists tighten for a moment, thinking you probably don’t want to be so close to him in such an intimate way. It scares him and the air feels colder than usual. He isn’t scared of your rejection (he swears it), but he knows he’s lying even if he doesn’t understand why at the current moment. You look up at him with sheepish smile and hold out your arms.
“My powers…do electrical stuff ,” you fidget your fingers through the bandages as tiny sparks pop up here and there, before you hiss in pain and turn to look him, “Your arm’s mechanical, no? ”
Bucky is dumbstruck for a moment and wants to ask what your power is (he wants to ask a lot of things actually), but you turn to go back to the movie, and he finds himself going to the other side of the couch and sitting beside you. You explain some of the beginning of the movie before letting him enjoy the rest on his own, and while the movie brags here and there for him what he enjoys the most is seeing you sway back and forth to the music and mouthing the words to all the songs whenever they came on. From the nightmares that he had just experienced, this is sort of a comfy haze for him that ends too quickly as he watches Joey and Vera walking hand-in-hand.
You’re grinning when you turn to look at him as you set yourself to sit sideways with a bandaged hand underneath your chin, eyes full of expectation and obvious love for the movie, “So what’chu think?”
“It was…all right,” Bucky answers, not really wanting to explain that he really wasn’t the movie most of the time.
“I know that’s not his best movie,” you shrug, “there are some better ones and he’s a musical icon. My grandma would say: If I hadn’t had married your grandpa, I would have gone after Ol’ Blue Eyes.”
You laugh, remembering the older woman and how much she loved music; it was something you had probably gotten from her growing up. Bucky turns to look at you with a soft smile, as you keep explaining Sinatra’s music career to him.
“So, what your favorite song?” he questions and in that moment he swears that your eyes light up.
“Witchcraft ,” you breath in and snuggle into the blanket a bit more as the crooning voice of Sinatra begins to play through the room, you grin and thank F.R.I.D.A.Y. Everything is starting to feel a bit more sluggish and you try to explain why you love this song, how you used to spend every Sunday afternoon making desserts with your grandmother to this wonderful voice, but all you do is yawn. You lean a bit more into the couch and pat the couch cushion for the soldier to follow suit.
'cause it's witchcraft, that crazy witchcraft  And although I know it's strictly taboo  When you arouse the need in me  My heart says "Yes, indeed" in me  "Proceed with what you're leadin' me to"
“Goodnight Bucky,” you hum before slowly falling asleep.
Bucky leans in and while he freezes the moment he feels your head leaning into his shoulder, your shallow breathing draws him into the land of sleep as well.
“Goodnight, doll.”

I gotta say "wow" to begin with, I really like your take on "what if the toons created the humans" (kinda like a swap au) and your fanfiction is honestly pretty damn good. Having said that I would love to write something for the "sinners and saints au" (that's the swap one right??, apologies if I got it wrong) and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind giving me a more in depth description of the characters?? Anyways keep up the amazing work! !
Thank you!— and yes, the Sinners and the Saints AU is the swap one. I’d love to see your take on it, and would be more than happy to dig into my characterizations. Keep in mind, this will be my take on them, and @insanityallegra might have different ones in her stories. So, the characters!
Bendy: Bendy is the original Creator of both Henry and Joey, the show’s main characters. He’s proud of them, loves his work, and prior to everything going wrong, was a very happy-go-lucky sorta fellow. Hes the one to put forth the idea of bringing their characters to life. Alice and Boris— his partners at the studio— agree, and together they build the Crimson Machine. Bendy often overworks himself and feels the need to face any problems they have in the studio head on. He cares about his creations, and on some level, he totally understands their pain and anger. He doesn’t blame them for hating him, since he’s one of the primary sources of their suffering, for all that his intentions were never to hurt them. Bendy’s kind of an optimistic pessimist. He wants to make things better, but he’s also pretty sure he’s going to die at the humans’ hands. I wouldn’t necessarily call him a scaredy cat, but he very much understands that he’s in near constant danger— something that would take a toll on anyone— and he’s a bit jumpy. He’d also much rather run than be forced to fight, since, like I said, he really does care about his creations. After creating Henry, he gets a bit more hopeful that things might turn out okay, but he’s also paranoid and suspicious that Henry might not be as saintly as he thought. But he’s low on options, which means that even though he might be afraid of Henry sometimes, Bendy sticks with him. On some level, at least, Henry is protective of him, and Bendy can trust that if nothing else.
Alice: Alice is fairly level-headed, and it takes a lot for her to lose her temper. When she does, however, you’d best steer clear. She makes up the most of the common sense in the trio, and while she loves her work at the studio as much as the next toon, she felt a bit distanced from some of the work up until the creation of Susie, for which she was responsible. I really recommend reading insanityallegra’s Regret (https://star-going-supernova.tumblr.com/post/168806287866/the-sinners-and-the-saints-regret), because it does a great job of capturing Alice through Susie. Like Bendy, Alice cares about the humans and hates that they’re obviously in pain. She was the first to favor the idea of killing the humans, not because they were scary (though they definitely do become that) but because she can’t stand to see how much suffering they’re in. Whether or not Alice can be saved from the merge with Susie, is currently unknown (and very well may differ between authors). Boris: I haven’t gotten around to figuring Boris out much, but I have him pegged as a chill, laid-back sorta guy. He can prank with the best of them, and he’s a huge part of the music department at the studio. He knows when to be serious and when to be funny, and he agrees with Alice that putting the humans down is the best mercy they can give. While he doesn’t have as close a connection to any of the characters like Bendy and Alice do, he cares about them just as much. Having to defend himself from them is worse for him than the others, since Boris is tall enough to actually do some damage in a fight. And because of his size, running and hiding isn’t often an option like it is for most of the rest of the toons, leading him to have to fight more often than not. Joey is Bendy’s biggest problem, and Susie was Alice’s, but unlike them, Boris doesn’t have a human hunting him down. That being said, however, even in this world, there’s something about the music department that draws Sammy in, and you can bet that sooner or later, there’s gonna be a confrontation. Boris’s current status is unknown. Joey: In the cartoon, Joey was a happy troublemaker, always getting into silly predicaments and going on adventures. His hammerspace doesn’t work correctly, and he’s constantly got a beef with Sammy for reasons that only seem to make sense to the two of them. He’s got a penchant for getting others involved in his problems, and while he often seems aloof, he cares very much about his friends. Joey’s got a real temper on him, and can react over-dramatically to a lot things. Here’s the physical description of his monster form, courtesy of insanityallegra: “One green eye glared down at Bendy, the pupil pie-cut just like in the show… And he was certainly tall, much, much taller than Bendy… But half of his face was… melted… Crimson continually pouring off of him in a never ending waterfall. He was missing a chunk out of his other side, again continuously bleeding thick crimson liquid and leaving that part of his shirt and jacket hanging loose. His left foot was straight-up missing, the right too large and twisted unnaturally. One of his arms was (almost uncannily) on-model, the other one completely bone with red chunks of flesh sticking to it. His face was twisted into a permanent, plastic smile, dripping crimson onto the floor from half of his head. What was there of his hair was matted down with the liquid.” In short, Joey’s in a lot of pain, and he has no problem placing the blame for it on Bendy. Now that he’s alive, and thus realizing that everything he thought was real is nothing more than a lie, he’s angry and upset, and the fact that the toons unknowingly denied him his best friend makes everything even worse. The rest of the humans look to him as an authority, and he’s the one that leads their little rebellion, trapping everyone inside the studio and initiating the hunting and capturing of the toons. He’s beyond reason at this point, and very much serves as a parallel to in-game ‘Bendy,’ being mindless in his rage, unwilling to back down, almost impossible to injure, and bent on revenge. Henry: In the cartoon, Henry plays the role of Joey’s guardian angel, and he’s got the wings and halo to prove it. He serves as a foil to Joey while also complimenting his personality. Henry’s a combination of patient, helpful, and cunning, with a generous dash of humor. He’s level-headed, and being best friends and guardian of Joey has left him pretty hard to surprise. He’s not much different outside of the show, remaining a curious sort of paradox between being all-around good and a peculiar sort of devious. Once he’s brought to life, there’s something not-quite-right about him, though. Oh, it’s nothing to do with his appearance; in fact, Henry’s the only one of the humans to come out on-model and in full color, with his navy sweater vest, red bowtie, blue eyes, and gold halo and wings. But for all that he does well in protecting Bendy and seems to genuinely want to help the humans without harming the toons, Bendy can’t help but feel that he’s missing something. Depending on how long it’s been after his creation, Henry could be written as anything from a character slowly going dark-side (but whether or not he will, you’ll just have to wait and see) to a character that’s fiercely protective and a perfect saint. Are Bendy’s suspicions that Henry’s associating with Joey true? Or is Henry as committed as Bendy is to finding a peaceful end to this mess? All I’m saying is that Henry has secrets, no doubt about it. But as for what those secrets are? Henry’s not tellin’ anytime soon. Sammy and Norman: I’m lumping these two together, since they spent most of their time in the show as best friends dealing with Joey’s antics. Sammy’s the more easily tempered of the two, and he’s perpetually grumpy. He takes delight in messing with Joey, and he has the tendency to be a bit callous. Norman is quiet and is to Sammy as Henry is to Joey. That being said, he can be just as much a thorn in Joey’s side when he wants to, and he ends up helping Sammy with his own antics and keeps him from going too far. They’re both on fairly friendly terms with Henry, Norman more so than Sammy. Neither of them mean Joey any true harm, but every good cartoon needs characters to return the slapstick nonsense. You can almost think of them as a cross between Donald Duck and Pete from the Mickey cartoons, Sammy more than Norman— in that they’re not really villains, and actually do end up on the same side as Joey and Henry sometimes, but their roles often focus on comedic antagonists. Of course, there are lots of toons and humans that also exist, though they’ve yet to be anything other than background characters for me. I know @liliflower137 and @guess-my-country each have designs for specific Searchers. I haven’t figured out a place for Wally just yet, though I’m opening to seeing where others might take him. Susie is very well described in insanityallegra’s Regret, like with Alice. I hope this was helpful, friend, and if you have any more questions, please feel free to ask them!  :)

More scribbles from the Call of Cthulhu Bendy Adventure! (Boo’s been doing recaps/highlights over on his blog if you wanna know what we’ve been up to!) These ones are from session 2!
Pictured Above: after some fast-talking shenanigans from Joey, some military guards agreed to drive us to check out one of the people we’d apparently been talking to before losing a big chunk of our memories, and we found him, uh, very murdered... and didn’t manage to make it back to the car before that headache/passing out problem we’ve been having hit, and everyone passed out right outside the house in the rain for several hours. Since “we all conveniently passed out for reasons we don’t understand” is a pretty shaky alibi, we were interrogated by the guards about our involvement in the murder of a man we don’t remember while already pretty overwhelmed and cranky about everything else. Henry’s busy dissociating so Sammy’s deploying the weapon he knows best: DISMISSIVE SARCASM. Anyway TIL seatbelts weren’t factory-installed until like the 1950s!
Pictured Below: Sammy and Henry had a sort of unsettling, uh..... vIS I ON??? Sammy suddenly found his ID changed into a silhouette and dripping ink, but when he ran over to Henry to check if he was also seeing this, it turned out that Sammy in his entirety had ALSO been changed into a silhouette of a person.... anyway we all passed out and woke up with everything back to normal, which probably means it was nothing to worry about!!!
Have some out-of-context game quotes:
[Sammy is played by me, Joey is played by Boo (inkyvendingmachine), Henry is played by Maf (sketch-cryptid), and Thren (haunted-hijinxer) is our GM!]
[Henry] Oh!! That’s normal, and fine!!!
[GM] "Oh! Did you actually want to get a fortune this time?" she says. [Joey] Yes. [Sammy] What? No! [Joey] Yes!
[GM] *pulls Death card* She says, "This card represents your past. It represents where you're coming from, what you've learned, and what you've already experienced." [Sammy] *unimpressed* We've experienced death. Interesting.
[GM] *draws the Devil card* "The next card represents the present, where you are physically and mentally." [Sammy] That one seems right. [Joey] *kicks Sammy under the table*
[GM] *draws Hanged Man* She says that inverted, this card represents selfishness, and egotism. [Henry] Everyone glances at Joey,
[GM] The chattier guard asks, "So what are you doing here?" [Sammy] Mind your business, Binoculars. [GM] "I have a name!" [Sammy] Mm-hm. *gets out of car* [Joey] I'm sure you do! *also gets out of car* [Henry] Henry is going to... quietly thank him as they go... let's not offend our only ride... [Sammy] They're giving us a ride because they wanna EAVESDROP on us! WE'RE DOING THEM A FAVOUR!! For REASONS SAMMY DOES NOT UNDERSTAND!!!!
[GM] If Henry's got the mirror out, you do see some gold on the door, but you can't entirely make it out, because there is a decapitated rooster hanging in front of it. [Sammy] Oh. [Joey] Okay. [Henry] Maybe he doesn't need to know that bad!
[Sammy] Sammy's gonna try really hard to get out of the house. I don't know if he'll make it, but he's going to try! [Joey] Joey is also going to be like TIME TO GO, [Henry] Henry is probably going to be dragging Joey. [Joey] Yeah, I was gonna say, if Henry doesn't drag Joey, Joey's going to be attached to Henry. [Sammy] If you don't leave, Sammy's leaving you both! [Henry] I'd expect nothing less!
[Sammy] What are you doing Henry, who are you sticking with? Or are you going to stay outside and become one with the lawn.
[Joey] Joey’s going to open the car door and go through the glove department-- not department. Compartment. [Joey] YES, our studio has many departments; the Art Department, the Music Department, and the Glove Department!
[Henry] I... ehhh... Henry doesn't want to be accused of tampering with a murder scene. [Sammy] Sammy's gonna go tamper with a murder scene!
[Sammy] [ooc] Just go to a crime scene, take some things, [Joey] It's the 1930s, it's fine. [Sammy] They didn't have crime scenes in the 1930s!
[GM] You get kind of a nod from the guard, and a "take care, yeah?" as you go, which is a step up! [Joey] Joey won't be completely cold shoulder to them, then. [Sammy] Sammy will! [Henry] Henry'll-- [Sammy] Sammy will sneer at them! [Henry] ...Henry'll just give them a tired "You too."
[Joey] Joey is going to take the card on his person, and then put it next to this one in the book, and close the book. [Sammy] The card he said he was going to destroy? [Joey] Yes. [Sammy] Okay, just checking.
[Sammy] [ooc] Joey’s going to steal all our stuff. For the greater good.
[Sammy] Well, if we want to lead the military's little sheep to the organisation they're looking for, this is a fairly good indication that we were not involved, and Thomas is playing the fool. [Joey] [ooc] But we didn't get the fool card... [GM] That's it, that ruins the plan then! [Sammy] Well HEAVEN FORBID that we should deviate from the plan, laid out for us in the cards, that ends with tAKING TEN SWORDS IN THE BACK!
[Sammy] [ooc, summarising a relevant piece of writing we found] Okay, he says he wakes up in a labyrinth, uhh -- did Buddy write this? "Terror gripped my soul,"... he was “wounded in spirit”..."I forgot who I was" -- yeah I think this is Buddy traversing the Music Department!
[Sammy] When Sammy sees what's happened to his ID he will... come inside looking, distressed? And go up to Henry, and show Henry, [Sammy] Henry, do you see this? [Henry] [to the GM] ...Do I see it? [GM] You do, the ID is a silhouette of Sammy, and indeed, to your eyes, Sammy looks like the picture. [Sammy] ...WHAT. PLEASE CLARIFY. [Joey] A silhouette of Sammy walked in and asked 'Do you see this'? [GM] Yes, and thrust out an ID picture with another silhouette of Sammy. MAKE SANITY ROLLS! :D
[Joey] I'm going to take a simple phobia... in which, Joey's not going to be able to handle being alone anymore. [Sammy] ...Maybe that's for the best.

REVEAL - Project Emerjence
Today Jamie Zakian and Month9Books are revealing the cover and first chapter for PROJECT EMERGENCE which releases March 14, 2017! Check out the gorgeous cover and enter to be one of the first readers to receive a eGalley!!
A quick note from the author:
I’ve always dreamed of writing an epic sci-fi thriller. I knew I wanted it to involve a group of teens leaving a dead Earth to start new lives on a terra formed Mars, but I didn’t have any ideas on how to make the plot exciting. Then, a song I never heard before played on my Pandora app. Escape by Rogue. As that song blasted through my headphones, the entire story that is Project Emergence streamed through my mind like a movie trailer. So, I went straight to work. It took months of frantic writing, almost a year of editing, and a mini rewrite, but that moment of inspiration became my first YA novel.
Project Emergence is a fast-paced thrill ride across the stars. It shows the extent people will go to uphold their beliefs, and that love can overcome any evil.
On to the reveal!

An ancient Hopi myth says people arrived on tiny silver pods that fell from the sky.
But the truth is far more terrifying.
Two-hundred fifty-eight teens are sent from a dying Earth to a terraformed Mars as part of the Emergence Program, mankind’s last hope before solar flares finish off their planet and species. Among the brave pioneers are sixteen-year-old Joey Westen and her twin brother, Jesse.
After only minutes in space, something triggers a total ship lock down.
With the help of their roommates, the Matsuda twins (notorious hackers and shady secret-keepers), Joey and Jesse stumble onto an extremist plot to sabotage the Emergence Program.
But Joey and Jesse didn’t travel to the deepest pits of space and leave their mother behind to be picked off in a high-tech tin can. They’ll lie, hack, and even kill to survive the voyage and make it to Mars.
Excerpt
Chapter One Joey stared out the window of a large, airtight van. The nose of a spaceship peeked above maroon-crested hills, and her forehead thumped against the glass. A light crinkle drew her stare, right to the paper wrinkling in her grip. She loosened her stiff fingers, smoothing a crease from the official seal of the Unified Nations of Earth. The letter in her hand still mesmerized her. Selected, Terraformed Mars, New home, those words knocked the bottom from her stomach every time she read them. Things were getting way too real. No more tiny lead-lined home, school time at the kitchen table, mom. She turned to Jesse, her brother’s smirk brighter than an X1 flare. “You’re a crappy twin. I’m freaking out right now, you should be too.” Jesse rolled his stare her way. “Fraternal twins don’t work like that.” “That’s not true.” She read the letter again, making sure both their names were listed for the umpteenth time. “I can’t believe this is happening.” Jesse squirmed, frowning a moment before his perma-smile returned. “No one from G-Sector ever goes anywhere.” “Did you see the look on mom’s face when we left?” “I know. Buzzkill.” “What’s she gonna do without us?” “Finally be able to feed herself,” Jesse snickered. Joey shook her head, folding the letter. “Maybe she’ll win the next lottery, meet up with us on Mars.” “Yeah, I don’t think so.” “Why not?” Jesse leaned close, keeping his voice low. “Didn’t you hear what that kid behind us was saying?” “No. What?” “He said there are no random drawings.” Jesse eyed the soldier stationed at the front of the van, then the other two at the rear. “That everyone is selected for a specific purpose.” “But, that would mean the U.N.E. is lying to everyone,” Joey said, a bit too loud. Jesse’s eyes opened wide, and she shrugged. “You’re gonna get us booted from this ride before we even launch.” “Sorry,” she muttered. “It’s a stupid idea anyway ‘cause look, we’re here. What do we have to offer? All you can do is fix stuff, and me … well, I’m just good at being cute.” She batted her eyes, flaunting a sly smile. “Yeah you’re right, that’s real flippin cute.” Jesse slanted toward the aisle, glancing around the cab. “There aren’t any adults on this van.” “There’s the soldier guys.” “Geez R-tard, I mean the passengers.” Joey pinched her brother, who wriggled away. “R-tard,” she mimicked. With a failed attempt to appear casual, she popped her head up and scanned the many seats. Sparkly clothes and bright makeup captured her stare. “They look like A-Sectors.” So lavish but she could see beyond the illusion of glittering threads and flawless skin, to the same excited fear that dwelled in her own eyes. “Please remain seated while the vehicle’s in motion,” a soldier thundered. Jesse grabbed Joey’s arm, pulling her down into the seat. “Smooth sister, real smooth.” She shrank back, initiating her trusty get-out-of-messes frowny smile. “Oops. In trouble already, figures.” Grumbles erupted from her brother’s lips, and she turned back to the dusty earth outside her window. Crazy how one day, and a trip to the mailbox, could change her entire life. Yesterday, she was painting a mural of Mars on their bedroom wall. Today, she was going to Mars. The parched countryside vanished behind a tunnel’s wall. She sagged down in her seat. For sixteen years, she clung to Jesse. Every time dust storms pelted their windowless metal house, she curled under his arm. Mom worked late and her hand became glued to his. And now, when she actually needed the comfort of his touch, her brain decided it’s time to man-up. Her eyes narrowed. She zeroed in on his cozy looking hand, her fingers drumming a steady beat on her leg. *** Sabrina poked her head around a corner. Her fingers tightened around a rifle’s grip as she peered down a dim corridor. Shadows danced along the concrete wall and she backed up, pressing her comms button. “Stone to dispatch, come in dispatch.” Static crackled in her ear, a garbled voice cutting in and out. “Dispatch, do you read? Where the hell is my back-up?” This time, only the fizz of dead air replied. “Damn underground bright-out dens,” she mumbled. These missions twisted her gut every time. There were very few people left alive on Earth. Many couldn’t afford specially designed homes or the rising cost of oxygen, and it didn’t sit right to bust folks just for trying to survive the scorching sun. Although, as a captain of the Unified Nations of Earth, she had a duty to her planet. Neither a heavy conscience nor lack of back-up would hinder that. Sabrina held her weapon close, skulking down the stone passage. Two men strolled around the bend, stopping short and she popped off two rounds. No sound emitted from the gun’s muzzle, just a flash that lit the graffiti-stained walls in white. The men slumped to the floor. Tiny darts protruded from their chests, pamphlets spilling from their limp hands. “Earth-heads,” she muttered, glimpsing anti-Mars propaganda. A clink of metal echoed to her left and she headed toward it. Men and woman dropped as Sabrina skated through shadows. Their tranquilized bodies slapped concrete, leading a trail to a solid door at the end of the long hallway. She reached into her vest, extracting a small explosive charge. Just as the magnet clinked to the steel slab, a voice sputtered into her earpiece. “Captain Stone, we’ve breeched the airlock. En route to your position.” “Bout time,” she muttered. Her thumb glided overtop the button of a wireless detonator and spikes of fear burrowed into her gut. U.N.E protocol, the whirl in her stomach, her brain required to wait for back-up. Pride, however, was a persistent little sucker, one that set loose a torrent of electric shocks to course freely in her veins. She scurried back, covered her head, and pressed the button. An explosion rocked her chest, slamming her against the wall. Hunks of concrete crashed down, and the door slammed atop the rubble. Sabrina swung her rifle dead ahead. Adrenaline perked her lips into a smile as she charged through wisps of smoke, firing upon every body that lunged her way. “This is a raid of the U.N.E., get down on the ground.” Soldiers flooded the doorway behind her and she dropped her grin. A woman needed an iron-clad stare amid this troop of grunts. “Took you guys long enough.” She turned, stumbling back as the five-stars of a General gleamed in her eyes. “Sir,” she roared, standing up straight. “Captain Stone, I need you to come with me.” Sabrina glanced around, as much as one could without moving a single muscle in their neck. Her men cleared the room as a smaller group, with much larger guns, crowded around her. “Am I in trouble sir?” “Quite the contrary, Captain. You’ve been selected for an important mission. You’re going to Mars, soldier.” *** Joey grabbed her brother’s hand the instant he climbed off the van’s step. Her attempt to play the tough-guy had gone on long enough. People shuffled all around the wide-open room, probably watching her act like a baby, but she couldn’t let go. Fear stole her will. It could have been the towering room of glass walls and silver beams that encompassed her, the barrage of strange faces, or the fact that she’d never see her mother again, but gloom tainted this moment. A soft voice streamed from a kiosk of video screens, repeating the Space Center’s famed slogan–Three days on the state-of-the-art R23 shuttle, strolling through green grass, swimming in cool oceans. Everything she memorized from the letter in her backpack. “Look, there’s check-in,” Jesse said, tugging her from the display of white sand beaches. She inched through the crowd, close to his side. They filed into a rowdy line, her palm sweating against his skin. “The Westen twins, I presume,” a high-pitched voice trilled from behind them. In one swift move, she shook free from Jesse’s grasp and whirled around. An ultra-posh, Asian girl leered down and Joey stood tall. Her eyes wandered to the near identical boy at her side, bearing the same long jet-black hair. Another set of twins. “How did you know our name?” Jesse asked. Joey nudged his arm, pulling his gaze from the low cut of the girl’s sparkly shirt. “We know the names of all the twins on this ship,” she said, her hand hoisting to her hip. “First and last,” the boy added. Joey stifled a chuckle. Twins who finished each other’s sentences, this trip was going to be stellar. The line shuffled forward, and the small group edged up a few paces. “How many twins are on this flight?” Jesse asked, glancing between the pair. “Fourteen, including us,” she replied. “Well fourteen sets,” the boy corrected, turning to his sister. “That actually makes twenty-eight twins.” “But twins is plural, so it would be fourteen,” she argued, a hint of red flaring her cheeks. “Yeah, but, you knew who we were,” Joey said. “We didn’t even know there were other twins here. Is there like, a manual we didn’t get or something.” The girl laughed, slapping her brother’s chest. A stealthy glare clouded her delicate features as she leaned in. “We hacked the database.” “We hack everything,” the boy whispered. “Cool,” Joey drawled, glancing to Jesse. “So you must be Jesse,” the girl said, staring at Joey, “Short for Jessica, right?” “Ahh no,” Joey sputtered. “I’m Joey. Short for Josephine, which I hate so … just Joey.” “I’m Jesse, which … isn’t short for anything.” Jesse shoved his hands into his pockets, his gaze falling down. “Ahem, the line is moving,” a red headed girl groaned. They all crept forward again, and then Jesse spun back around. “So are we supposed to hack to find out your names?” The girl giggled, and Joey’s eyes rolled. Her stare landed on the boy’s annoyed face, and they both grinned. “Kami Matsuda.” A rainbow of colors reflected off the girl’s clothes as she slinked closer to Jesse, looking up into his eyes. “That’s Rai,” she said, nodding to her brother but keeping her deep gaze. Jesse gulped. His hands began to tremble, and it became painfully obvious at how fast his breath flowed. “Next in line.” “That’s us,” Joey chirped. She all but ripped Jesse from Kami’s leer. “We’ll catch up with ya.” It took quite a massive tug, but she finally got Jesse moving toward the registration table. “Now who’s smooth, dorkus,” she whispered. *** “Let me get this straight, Mr. Winslow,” Sabrina said, only able to mask a fraction of the edge in her tone, “you want me to be a glorified babysitter for a bunch of teens in space?” She turned from a wall of windows, which ran from floor to ceiling. Her boots sank into lush carpet as she strolled past stone statues, one of which lost its arm somewhere along the way. Such extravagance. If it were liquidated and spread out, every sector could afford a giant dome to protect its people from radioactive air; instead of just the A-Sectors. She tore her gaze from art-adorned walls, catching an impatient glare from the man behind a glossy wooden desk. “The situation on our hands goes far beyond babysitting, Captain Stone. We’re under attack. The commander of the U.N.E. herself assured me you were the best of the best.” “Commander Sun said that? Huh.” She stepped closer. The man before her strained to appear confident, but she glimpsed the beads of sweat that trickle between his dark wrinkled skin and white hair. “You’ve got my attention,” she said, cupping her hands behind her back. “Of course you understand, every word spoken within this room stays within this room.” “Yes sir.” “Ever since the inception of the Emergence program, a group of fanatics have targeted us. Are you familiar with the Earthisum Movement, Captain Stone?” “Yes sir. I took out an underground lair of them this morning. They seem to be, for the most part, harmless.” “Perhaps on the outside.” He pulled a brown folder from his drawer, placing it on his desk. “Have a look.” Sabrina flipped open the cover, scanning the pages. When she read a handwritten letter, which appeared to be scrawled in blood, her fingers actually shook. “The threats made in that manifesto were not empty.” Her head snapped up, and she gawked at the old man before regaining her composure. “Are you saying, the Earth-heads blew up your first flight to Mars?” His finely manicured fingers massaged his forehead, a ghostly shade of white claiming his cheeks. “Yes, after only hours in space.” He dropped his stare and muttered, “The second and third flights as well.” “What?” “Those maniacs sabotage every Spacebus we launch. None have successfully made the voyage to Mars.” “How could you hide this from the public? They think people are living, flourishing over there. You need to put a hold on this program. Now. I’ll need at least a week to investigate.” His head shook, and Sabrina slammed her hands on the desk. “That file says there are two-hundred and fifty-eight children walking onto that shuttle as we speak, Mr. Winslow. Two-hundred and fifty-eight lives you’re putting at risk.” “If we stop the program, they’ve won. No! The survival of the human race is too important. This mission has to succeed, Captain Stone.” “But why now, with kids? If what you’re telling me is true, Mars is empty. There are no doctors, scientists, or security of any kind in place. They’ll eat each other alive out there.” “It has to be them.” He rose from his seat, smoothed a crease on his pinstriped lapel, and strolled to the window. “Those young adults were born in the year of the massive solar flare.” While gazing out the lightly-tinted glass, he motioned for Sabrina to join him. “I don’t see why that matters.” As she approached, the doublewide spacecraft stole her focus. She allowed her stare to fuse with the gleam of curved metal, sharp points of thin wings, before shifting her eyes to the man beside her. “They’re genetically predisposed to elevated radiation, since … I handpicked each one of them—for their instincts, spark, and their odds of producing healthy offspring.” “Look, I get that. But, if you just postpone a few weeks I can—” “Earth only has a few weeks left, Captain Stone.” His voice quavered. He cleared his throat, lifting his chin high. “The sun is set to flare in, approximately, ten days. The space program predicts its intensity will surpass our classification scale. Moments, and everything left above the surface will be eradicated. Not even the UV-dome of A-Sector can deflect these waves.” Sabrina gasped. She began to stagger back, but Winslow grabbed her arm. “Captain Stone, Sabrina. Look down there, at those children.” Her legs wobbled for the first time in her memory, but she crept forward. People hurried along a glass-encased walkway, far below, like tiny ants marching into a trap. “That’s the future of mankind down there. If they don’t make it to Mars, our species will cease to exist. You have to get them to that planet safely. You’re the last hope of humanity, Captain Stone.”

Everybody is winning except us
Joey
October 7th
Of all of the ways this could've gone, I'm really surprised I didn't figure this would be the EXACT way it would go.
You can't predict Khabib going feet first into a melee outnumbered like 5 to 1, you can't predict Conor McGregor having a "Greedo shot first" moment by actually throwing the first punch (although in his defense, as he scales the cage, someone else is scaling it and I would've assumed anybody from Khabib's corner is going to be after me or my team at that point), you can't predict riots or a full on culture/nationalistic war.
You can always predict chaos in MMA. You can always predict the WORST CASE SCENARIO in this sport.
If you think of all the positive aspects from just the fight alone, you could be here for a while. Conor McGregor took two years off of MMA, came back to fight the scariest dude and had an actually not half bad performance given the stylistic match up, the rust factor and his natural shortcomings as a fighter (quick twitch high reflex muscle memory guy with poor cardio). If anything he could have/should have been applauded for taking the risk and we'd all be asking how a run back goes with an additional six-ish months of training. For Khabib, he once again answered another litany of questions and for the most part aced the toughest test of his career. For the UFC, they put on a tremendous fight card without a hitch, made massive money and set themselves up for another run of successful fights for both guys including a rematch. Everything could've been positive.
But this is MMA. The Worst Case Scenario more often than not will rear its ugly head at the most inopportune time. There's no point in step by stepping anybody through the brawl. What's done is done, what happened happened and everybody and anybody has their opinions on it. We all gain nothing from replaying it over and over. It's more about how we leave this entire fiasco with perceived egg on the faces of everyone involved.
I feel like we have to begin with Khabib Nurmagomedov because at the end of the day, he's the guy here who took this entire joke to the next level. You can't go and fight dudes at the cageside area. That's basic common sense stuff. The problem is that this isn't the first time Khabib has been involved in utter tripe before and maybe this is just who he is. To me, nobody has had their public perception hurt the way he has over the past few weeks from the homeless guy push ups to the presser comments to the open work out fiasco. If "gotten to" is a deal then Khabib epitomized it this entire weekend. Even his brief press conference was a trainwreck as he went from contrition for his behavior to wondering why it was a big deal and dare I even say, attempting the tried and true Whataboutisms that ultimately lead down a road to nowhere. It takes great skill to talk for a minute and reveal you still don't quite get why you're going to be a in a world of trouble.
Now if you believe in the receipt then Conor McGregor's been way overdue for one. This is an act that's spiraled out of control since his KO of Jose Aldo (and perhaps maybe even a bit before that happened) with an eventual "Oh Shit" coming at some point. You don't continually win in shit situations of your own making before something eventually backfires on you (unless you're Jon Jones) and Conor's last two years have exposed the very worst of the act. The Andre Fili/Artem Lobov situation, the Bellator incident, bar fights, speeding tickets of a dangerous sort, the ENTIRE Mayweather-McGregor fight lead up, the bus incident and the presser that was basically a collection of "Too far!" material in an already "Too far!" situation. Conor's gone for it on 4th down a lot recently and every situation he's either scored or gotten a penalty bail out from the bad decision. Eventually those do catch up with you and here we are now. Again, the erosion of SBG; it's image as a gym full of average dudes accomplishing great MMA shit evolving into the world's biggest collection of fake McGregor's has to be mentioned. What do you do when King Midas' left hand turns everything to gold but his right hand turns everything to shit?
Of course we can also bundle up everybody else into one neat and tidy paragraph here; the UFC for being a business first and not a common sense machine second. The bus attack was part of the story in my opinion and couldn't be neglected BUT somebody with a hint of common sense should've said "tone it down" to Conor and Khabib about religion, this that or the other thing. Instead they played it fast and loose, like they did/do with DC vs Jones, without realizing that Jones vs Cormier was a really personal rivalry about two people who for the most part kept it at two people. Hell taking it one step further, we can say that the UFC should've told Conor to tone it down in 2016 or 2017 or 2018. This is what happens when a fighter gains power and becomes TOO big to say to no to. You get this. Conor should've been told "No!" faaaar sooner than this. How about SBG and Khabib's cohorts who seemed to want to interject their asses into this as much as the two fighters themselves. We can also turn a sarcastic thumbs up to the majority of the MMA media; the ones who bloviated "Conor's back!" as he poured out his presser best but not once stopped to ask if maybe this whole religion/nationalism/family feud was going a bit too far. The same ones who refer to last night as a disgrace (which it was) without stopping once along the way to ask if we were heading into this situation by virtue of nobody wondering if this was spiraling. The ones who are SO reliant on MMA (and ergo the UFC and ergo Conor) to do well that they, like the UFC, allowed anything to go in the pursuit of the traffic. Lastly and perhaps most painfully? Us as fans. When the things that sell are always the worst, the bar is always raised. As consumers we have the ability to dictate what we receive and if what works is the dirt worst? Well that's on us, no? If we ascribe to the "We fight in a cage, nothing is bad for the sport" mantra then we wear this. We may not have asked for THIS specifically but that's neither here nor there because we've asked fore more of the bad shit. We ASKED for this.
And ya know the sick part? Everybody wins here really if you think about it. Assuming Khabib isn't suspended for life and incapable of getting back into the United States? He'll have a Conor McGregor rivalry for years to live off of. The same goes for Conor who has mastered the "losing the fights where you have an out" approach. Vs Nate? Well that was on two weeks notice at 170 lbs! Vs Floyd? First fight in boxing! This one? Two year layoff vs the world's greatest wrestler! Once Dana White gets over his personal shame and disappointment? The business man is going to make him realize that he'll have general wealth for every generation he's ever going to have with a Khabib vs Conor rematch. The folks decrying this as shameful will playfully bite their nails and play the "Who knows what's gonna happen!" gimmick at every presser, every face off and every single day leading up to the rematch. Those who shout about how "passionate" these fanbases are will continue to do so while also saying "they're not ALL like that!" when confronted with every social media clip of fans brawling and fighting outside the venue. Even Dillon Danis, a less self aware Robert Drysdale who fashions himself as a bootleg Conor McGregor, has basically made himself into a household name now. Everybody wins because so long as consumers want it? Business ALWAYS wins. That's the nature of the game. It's MMA at its dirt worst and there's perhaps no other place MMA shines then when it's at their dirt worst. Be it boxing or MMA, business booms at the dirt worst level. This is seemingly where the sport actually wakes up and decides to perform.
There are basically just two losers here really. The first is the lightweight division which sure looks like it's careening towards yet another stripped champion. And potentially yet another interim champion. And potentially  yet another year of question or determining just what the hell is going with the most loaded weight class in sports with fighters stuck on a broken elevator that's going neither up nor down. We have the most blessed division in the history of this weird sport and right now we have a champion who's about to be suspended, a former champ who is probably going to chase "money fights" now and the real champion who seems one poorly timed stunt away from ripping everything on the lower half of his body. The world's most talented division is about to get its dick buried in the dirt again for no reason other than the guys at the top of the helm can't control themselves. The other loser? Those of us who cling to the hope that one day this sport won't be like this. At the end of the day, we need to stop assuming MMA's going to one day grow up and just resign ourselves to the knowledge that it is what it is. For those of us who believe this thing is going to clean itself up? Probably not happening. The idea that one day in the not too distant future fights will be able to sell on the basis of being great fights and we won't need to squeeze every bit of juice out of it by resorting to the dirt worst (be it DC referring to Jon Jones as a junkie, anything Colby Covington does or the latent ethnocentrism used to sell this feud) should be dead now. As much as we all want MMA to treat itself like a sport, what the people want---and seemingly what EVERYONE involved in this sport wants---is this. We built this sport on it and now we gotta own it. All sports have brawls/fracases but they're not the drawing point to drawing people in. We WANT this. We OWN this.
If you don't believe me, wait until Covington vs Woodley to confirm it all over again. Prepare yourself for the worst case scenario.
