This week in BL - I am all over the place, But Laws of Attraction is Phenomenal af
July 2023 Wk 2
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
Laws of Attraction (Thai Sat iQIYI) 1 of 8 - Icky picked it up but it’s not airing for me until Sundays so I held this post specifically to watch and talk about this show. Stars the pair from To Sir With Love with the same production team. IT’S SO GOOD Y’ALL. A morally corrupted trickster lawyer with a tragic past, sad eyes, and a beautiful smile that he uses like a weapon. Meets paladin martial arts instructor from other side of the tracks (who is out, at least to his baby sister). Corrupt police. Spoiled rich kid evil. Ambitious politician. Tragic death. Terrible subs.* This show is very like Manner of Death but so far it is a much better/tighter story. It’s NOT BL but it is fucking phenomenal. And you shoudl watch it. Not wait to binge it. WATCH IT. On a global scale this might be the best thing currently airing featuring gay romantic leads. Its really fucking good. It’s Lawless Lawyer but more complex character motivation and gay af. Fuck yes please and thank you. FINALLY. Triggers for violence, beatings, death & torture depicted on screen. Like MoD they are not holding back.  (* A lot of the familial names they are using are not gendered in Thai but translated as such, like “nephew”. This one is gonna go down a lot easier if you know some Thai.)
Step By Step (Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 12fin - 2 years pass and no one’s hairstyle changes? Srs. Them meeting again = hella AWKWARD. Both still pining & hurt. NO SINGING. The reconciliation scene was great. I enjoyed that on the “do over relationship” they went with phi/pom (instead of the super formal khuns). So cute and so much more relaxed. Also lots of neck kisses! Charming final ep. It’s only flaw being they dropped the side couple, but I wasn’t really into them anyway. Ultimately? This is what Boss & Babe should have been and could we please have Up lead out another BL? I miss him and he only gets prettier. Full review below.
La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 12fin - I adore the tiny little baby GL thread that we almost got. And I wish we had had more of it throughout the show. The side couple turned out to be good too. Emotional crying kisses are my favorite. Sunshine netted himself an earnest serious romantic boy, we likey. As for the main couple? Well... Tai’s search story arc was dull and dragging in a final ep and it felt bloated and slow as a result. It was a good confession reunion with Tai figuring all of his shit out, not surprising but fine. Kind of a a weak final ep. Full review below.
Hidden Agenda (Thai Sun GMMTV YouTube) ep 1 of 12 - JoonDunk are back and we have all seen this a million times before, but Thailand never executed a successful formula it didn’t want to repeat a million times over, drunk bathroom and everything. Welcome (back) to Thai BL (and back and back and back). Basically they just added glasses, a new 1-shared-brain-cell friendship group, and different uni departments. Ah GMMTV, forever trying to recreate the magic of 2gether. But also I’m enjoying it. I’m a simple person. (Hi Jamie! Still in college since 2018 I see.) Anyone else notice that Chinese phrase that they did not translate for us? Mmm hum. Cute. Still... NO SINGING.
Low Frequency (Sat iQIYI) ep 2 of 8 - Thames is in coma and getting slagged off on the socials. It’s moving a bit slowly but the premise is interesting despite the poor quality of the execution.
Dinosaur Love (Sun iQIYI) ep 3 of 8 eps - Major trigger for self harm depicted on screen in part 2/4. I skipped it. Then there is assault and verbal abuse. I told you Ultimate Troop is NOT to be trusted.
Be Mine Super Star (Mon Viki) ep 2 of 12 - Look, I don’t really mind this show but I also don’t like second hand embarrassment and I sense a metric butt ton incoming.
Be My Favorite (Fri YouTube) ep 8 of 12 - I was not best pleased with this episode. Ya’ll round the tumblr-sphere seem to be enjoying it but I have officially hit the wall on Kawi. There is not enough booze for me to cope with his shizz. I may be alone in this. But gotta say how I feel... Unlike him. Trash watch here.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Tokyo in April is... AKA Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 5 of 8 - Poor Ren, he feels compelled to take on the burden of protecting everyone from sexual assault because he blames himself. And he can’t even talk to his boyfriend about it. Oh fuck me the pair of shoes at the door. And neck kisses? TOO MUCH. Argh. Japan. Why must you hurt so good?
Stay By My Side (Taiwan Fri Gaga) 3 of 10 eps - It’s a very cute show. All the tropes and archetypes with no fuss or attempts to be clever, just executing them (sometimes over and over again). Even hiccoughs as a result of flirting! I haven’t seen that one in ages. The show feels old fashioned as a result. Nostalgic. I’m good with that.
Tie The Not (Pinoy YouTube) ep 6 of 8 - Sad boys still sad now drunk. (Noooooo shoes on bed! Argh.) Finally kisses! Also good ones for a large portion of this ep. Plus hair pulling. And verse rep! And after sex convo. Then side dishes have a whole proper gay ax covo about top/bottom. Everyone say thank you Philippines! get down with your queer selves!
Stupid Genius (Vietnam Fri YouTube) ep 6fin - I believe this was the final episode. It was cute. This is a standard sort of semi-crappy VBL high school drama. Enjoyable in its floppy friendliness, weirdly like a queer after school special promoting education. Dead fish kisses but fine for what it is. 7/10
Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu Gaga) 2 of 12 eps - Activate cohabitation trope. They okay bfs. Minato not as frustrating this week, but still frustrating for me and Shin. Next week = cute outfits and dumb miscommunication yay!
Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) ep 11 of 12 - again it didn’t show up on my dash in time for this. I’ll pop it into next week.
Tumblr media
It’s airing but ...
House of Stars (Thai Mon iQIYI) 12 eps - I bounced at ep 3. Will binge if told it is worth it at end.
Stay (Pinoy YouTube) 7 eps - It’s mostly English & set in LA (shudder) so I’m not bothering.
Stay With Me ... NO I WILL NOT! And you can’t make me.

Ended This Week
Step By Step Series Review
This was Thailand’s answer to The New Employee, and everything I loved about that show I loved about this one. This was an office romance between stern boss and sweet subordinate that felt more authentic to an office environment than previous Thai BLs of this ilk. And that authenticity added tension to the narrative and character development (how novel). Now that might be because it has western source material, or it might be because it is actually kind of old-fashioned (it’s been years since I worked as an office grunt). I also really enjoyed the brothers’ relationship, and kinda wished they hadn’t attempted (and failed) to give said brother his own side BL. That one flaw made it a 9/10 for me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Tumblr media
La Pluie Series Review
This BL takes to task the fated mates trope and what it means to have love chained intimately to predestination. It’s about how faith in destiny before choice diminishes the authenticity of emotion, relationships, and connection. This is a high concept to examine through the lens of a BL. By activating + examining the soulmates trope this show is challenging a foundation of romance: the idea that there is one person meant to be your one romantic partner all your life. This means that we, as viewers, spend much of the show worried about it having a happy ending, and that’s the source of both its brilliance and tension: would the narrative have the strength to truly challenge its own romantic core? But, ultimately, all this elevated complexity was executed in a somewhat shaky manner with the narrative derailing into some serious pacing issues and characters manipulated by miscommunication. However, with good chemistry and decent acting all around, plus some excellent high heat and representation of consent and a few other rare tropes, this one has to (like it’s sibling show My Ride) earn a 9/10. I enjoyed it even as it made me think, so despite its flaws: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Next Week Looks Like This:
Tumblr media
Starting:
7/19 Wedding Plan (Thai Wed YouTube & iQIYI)  - It's Mame and she's coming for our GL. She's such a misogynist IMAGINE what we will get with a GL side dish? It's going to be absolute carnage. To crane your neck as you drive by the car wreck or not? That is the question. Me? I'm wallowing in the guts. Trying to decide to trash watch or not...
7/20 Jun & Jun (Korea Thu Viki) - From 2022 I CAN’T FUCKING WAIT! So excited for this one.
2023 forthcoming BL master post (see comments, some are inaccurate, NOT KEPT UPDATED)
THIS WEEK’S BEST MOMENTS
Tumblr media
FYI roselle juice is made from hibiscus (a flower) so technically neither a tea nor a juice. (Hidden Agenda)
Tumblr media
Tie the Not = all the verse rep this ep. I love this for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The giggling was SO DAMN CUTE (Step by Step, na?)
Tumblr media
We all guessed it but it was still fun. (Stupid Genius) Also miracles of miracles, two actors who actually look like they could be brothers play brothers.
Tumblr media
First time I’ve seen faen translated as significant other. (Laws of Attraction)
Tumblr media
THE PAIN! (Tokyo)
(Last week.)

Love Senior's started airing!!
So here I am, once again, with my usual language observations. Note: I'm going off the YT subs and shall use whatever name romanizations they use there!
Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏
Manaow's older brother Faung's nickname for her because Siblings™
Tumblr media
Faung เฟือง /Feuuang/ is shortened from มะเฟือง /Ma Feuuang/ = star fruit
Manaow มะนาว /Ma Nao/ = lime
( ไอ้)หมาเน่า /(ai) maa nao/ = (You) rotten dog -> as you can see from my basic-ass pronunciation guide, it sounds close to her actual name -> หมาหัวเน่า /maa huaa nao/, lit. rotten-headed dog, is an idiomatic expression for an outcast, someone who's disliked and has no friends - lol thanks P'Faung!
Gyoza's red Vespa
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's called (เจ้า)หมูแดง /(jao) moo daaeng/
เจ้า /jao/ = used affectionately as a prefix by seniors for children or juniors, as well as by owners for pets
หมูแดง /moo daaeng/ = lit. red pork; grilled marinated pork dish of Chinese origin
What to call each other
Tumblr media
Gyoza, who's been calling herself พี่ /Phi/ and who Manaow has been referring to as พี่เกี๊ยว /Phi Giao/ (because she's a senior a year ahead of her), suggests that when it's just the two of them, Nao doesn't have to call her พี่ /Phi/, and starts referring to herself just by name, เกี๊ยว /Giao/ (her full name Gyoza is เกี๊ยวซ่า /Giao Saa/).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Manaow: งั้นเกี๊ยวเกิดเดือนไรอ่ะ /ngan Giao geert deuuan rai a/
So Manaow drops the พี่ /Phi/ right away and starts calling her เกี๊ยว /Giao/.
And just for completeness's sake: Manaow also refers to herself by name (นาว /Nao/) and Gyoza does so reciprocally (mostly นาว /Nao/ and sometimes มะนาว /Ma Nao/). So no pronouns, just names!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
จีบ /jeep/ = pursue, court, flirt with (Funnily enough, a homonym of เกี๊ยว /Giao/, which means dumpling, is เกี้ยว /giao/, which also means to flirt, woo, etc. - I'll be waiting for this pun in a future episode lol)
Gyoza's reasoning for asking is that Manaow seems ห้าว ๆ เกินหญิง /haao haao geern ying/ = bold/daring/fierce for a woman
Kudos to Lada shamelessly flirting with Alee and calling him หนู /noo/ (= lit. mouse)!!
Tumblr media
เดี๋ยวพี่เลี้ยงหนูนะ /diao Phi liiang Noo na/
As a 2nd person pronoun it's usually used by someone much older to affectionately refer to a child or someone younger, implying that the person referred to is cute and smol like a mouse, basically. In the same vein it can sound patronizing too, though, especially coming from a stranger or someone who isn't much older.
They're the inverse of the shy younger girl and flirty pursuing older guy trope and I love that!
Sulking~
Tumblr media
หายงอนแล้วใช่ไหม /haai ngaawn laaeo chai mai/ = You're not sulking anymore, right?
Just in case any potential reader has never seen a Thai series before this GL: 'Ngon' and 'Ngor', as they're often romanized, are a set of behaviors that are common in close relationships. That can be familial or between friends too but it's certainly most common in a romantic context and as a romance trope.
งอน /ngawn/ = sulking, pouting, acting displeased, huffy, slighted, petulant; can be playful or serious
ง้อ /ngaaw/ = reconcile, make up with; this can be lots of things tbh, i.e. hugging, apologizing, giving sth. to show care like Manaow does here, etc.
Flirty Puns, my beloved!
Tumblr media
กินเกี๊ยวไหม /gin giao mai/ = Wanna eat the dumpling?
GIN GIAO MAI DJSDHSDJDSH okay now that that's out of my system- As we've established, Gyoza refers to herself as เกี๊ยว /Giao/, which means dumpling. And กิน /gin/ means consume, take, exploit, it's mostly used with food and drink though, hence it generally being translated as 'eat'. So:
กินเกี๊ยวไหม /gin Giao mai/ = Wanna eat me?
Sidenote: this specific dumpling here is เกี๊ยวทอด /giao thaawt/ = fried wonton/dumpling

now that gmmtv2024 was somewhat confirmed to take place this month, i am tempted to make my own gmmtv2024 bingo card as well. but since i'm not sure if i could come up with 24 ideas to fill the boxes, so, i'm going to list them first to check. please note these all just for my personal fun as i don't really understand the trend in the industry to try making reasonable prediction of anything. this would solely be a wild wild wishlist of mine which might deviate far from the fandom's general analysis/predictions/wishes or anything. or. at this point i just need to have some fun and entertain myself and post this because apparently i have a giffing/still-editing slump. here i go:
winnysatang's new series as main leads, directed by p'au or p'fon (yes, i'm specific -- i'm fine with any genre/theme, i'm sure they will certainly pull it off, HOWEVER, no high school/early university setting this time, please) -> might be the only one from this list i truly wish to happen.
winny's series in which he gets to work with earn and them playing as brother-sister or best friend. this is not a wish but a need.
first kanaphan's show, but this one, please separate him from khaotung. give him that mafia's heir role.
khaotung thanawat's show, also separated from first. give him that psychopath role. no, i'm NOT talking about home school s2. no home school s2 wish from me if people are not going to appreciate the s1 for the masterpiece that it was.
firstkhao romcom. let them not cry for once.
sizzy's full length series; all four as main leads. thinking about a slice-of-life kind of show, similar in vibes with kdrama 'age of youth', and let them have a full ost album by themselves.
nanon-film-pond in a full-length drama version of dirty laundry. what do you mean we only had 6 episodes of them.
pond-phuwin-joong-dunk series. all four of them in one show. i can take whatever genre/theme they have to offer.
ploy-aj romcom. just about time.
also, aj-jj real brother centric drama.
i need a thai adaptation of jdrama 'love shuffle'. give me this ensemble: earth-papang-sea-neo-aye-piploy-love-view.
markford tiwpor msp spin-off, preferably post high school.
neomark bostonnick only friends spin-off (or kind of) *smile*
something of the warp effect caliber.
another something of my school president caliber.
new bl shows with: forcebook (adult non-office drama);
jimmysea (as school teachers);
geminifourth (university life drama);
aouboom (not sure about the theme that would fit them, but hey, how about that semantic error adaptation).
new gl shows with: filmearn (celebrity agency setting);
jamieview (fashion industry related office setting);
milklookjun (something with some politics as background).
a remake of 'in time with you' with jan and singharit.
midnight museum s2.
ok i have 24 but am i really sure this greedy list is a bingo material? :')

5 people, 15 questions
thanks for the tag @visualtaehyun I haven't been tagged in one of these types of things in ages, but they're fun!

Yeah, parents are super into bible stuff… there’s a Hannah in the bible but there’s nothing cool about her. She just really wanted to have a baby…Ironically, I do not want children.
2) When was the last time you cried?
I actually don’t remember but I think it was in therapy 2ish weeks ago.

No. I have a giant stuffed bear though, he’s pretty cool.
4) What sports do you play/have you played?
Soccer (futbol) my favorite for all time.
I did swimming and volleyball in high school but I do not like either of those. Swimming is kind of like torture.

Their energy. I know it isn’t a physical thing but it just happens. It wafts my way upon approach ha!
7) What's your eye color?
Hickory Brown according to this color chart….
8) Scary movies or happy endings?
Why are these an OR ??? But. I do like happy endings. Scary movies are a few and far between, just not my jam.

My talent is feeling awkward when asked to name my talents… I honestly don’t know, I’m pretty musically talented according to people - Oh yeah, I’m fairly decent at taking photos and giving advice as well.
10) Where were you born?
Murca California Southern area
11) What are your hobbies?
Cooking! I think about food a lot. Painting, reading… sometimes I play guitar. Learning languages. My focus is kind of split between three so perhaps not the best way to go about it, but it’s happening anyway. Love a good Thai GL or BL.
I’m also super into learning about Esoteric type stuff. I love a good wander down the alien/UFO rabbit hole.
12) Do you have any pets?
No. Family has a rug-like dog though. He's currently snoring next to me and making strange noises....

since you mentioned the 3 will be free with the astrophile cast i have a question sorry for asking too i just got curious but why do you think gmm have not made anymore poly relationship series? do you think it will cause a controversy? because i think gmm is very capable of making a poly relationship where it can not be so toxic like a few of their series and theres very beautiful romantic to platonic relationship
listen, here's the thing with 3 will be free: it was p'jojo's dream project bc he is by FAR the most inclusive gmmtv director, all of his works have multiple lgbtq+ characters with some identities that have never been acknowledged before on thai tv, he talks about specific lgbtq+ issues in all of his works... so it's no surprise that he would've done a show that goes SO MUCH against conservative thai media like 3 will be free. that show was & still is revolutionary, and there's a reason why it keeps being aired again every 6 months, bc no show is like it. THAT BEING SAID, while p'jojo made this show to be inclusive & show a different form of love that's just as beautiful & valid, most of the thai public who know this show know it for its "subversive" nature. and sadly I do think that's how the general thai audience still sees poly relationships, even though they're slowly getting included in shows like saneha bar stories 4, unforgotten night & art en adore. so I don't think it would cause a controversy necessarily, but I just think that 1) one of gmmtv’s directors would need to come up with a script with a poly relationship, and 2) it would need to be with big actors or a known ship that would make the show marketable, bc the "poly show wow factor" has already gone with 3 will be free (in their minds.) so I feel like the reason gmmtv hasn't made another poly show is that they're usually NOT the trendsetters in terms of actual series actually (though in terms of variety shows concept & marketing they for sure are!) they created their first bl show after they saw how successful love sick was. they'll likely create their first gl show after they see how much gl series like gap are beloved. so they already took a risk once with 3 will be free, it clearly paid off bc everyone loves that show, but now I think they're gonna wait a bit so they can see other poly shows do well, find a script that's worth telling (probably bl since they already did a multi gender pairing), and then the actors, etc. maybe p'jojo will create a bl poly show though, we never know! I don't really see any other signed gmmtv directors create this kind of story, though... so another poly show will surely happen one day, it's just that... I'm not sure that 3 will be free really set the stage for it to become a recurring aspect of thai dramas sadly 🥲

Hi! Here I am with another piece of fanmail :) I just finished listening to part 2 of the VIIBE awards, your podcast with @shortpplfedup, and enjoyed it just as much as the first episode!
Your industry discussion was really interesting. I really loved listening and thinking about your discussion! I neither have perfect pitch nor have knowledge about film criticism, but as a self-proclaimed Hwang Da Seul fan, I am really happy you gave her the best director award!! (Blueming was one of my favourites of 2022). Nothing will beat the itsay soundtrack for me (the drama of it all) but i did really enjoy the music in Bad Buddy (also the music in Not Me). I also really appreciated you naming the screenwriters, because it is important to talk about other people who work on the production, not just the director and the actors!
Your discussion about queerness in bl productions also really intrigued me. I always think about the way these shows are perceived by queer people in the countries the shows are made in/by. I also think about my own relationship to queerness and why bl is such a big interest of mine. How bls show/don't show overt/explicit queerness, which chararacteristics are given to the different characters etc. I look forward to you discussing this at a later date!!
And your future outlook also really spoke to me. It really feels like there is a shift happening. I live in western europe, and I recently went to a book shop in a bigger german town. Half of one shelf of manga (which was two shelves in total) was bl/yaoi manga (they had like ten gl/yuri books), some of which was manga which had already been adapted. A few years ago, there was almost no bl OR gl on the shelf. TANGENT. I do think that production houses are trying to find their footing. I also found your perspective on thai shows being more thai and less "generic setting" to be very interesting. Maybe has to do with bl become a soft power for thailand, like they said in the eclipse? It is a way to showcase the country, so they can be more specific about it? (also, can we get sets like the ones in 3 will be free back? not those generic mansions etc? I liked the sets/locations of the ghost host ghost house mock trailer more than those in the actual series bc they felt distinct. i want more of that, please).
Anyways, this was a big ramble and i hope it is somewhat legible. I really enjoy listening to you talk and as a younger person (late twenties), I really hearing about your perspective on bl and its industry!
Thank you for spending a few hours with us again! It really means a lot that folks are enjoying listening to us talk about shows we like. I am also glad we were able to agree on Hwang Da Seul, because we had a lot of difficulty on the front end when we were discussing directors.
I’m also very curious about where yaoi and yuri fit in the retail space internationally, so thank you for that note as well!

It really feels like people put a different standard or....double standard on gl/wlw media like it almost feels like it has to be perfect or hit certain points to be consumable/watchable and for people to like it. and i feel like there's so much more criticism and even hatred for these pieces vs bl or gay dramas.
and like when it comes to bl like you can make them with bad acting and with bad writing with extremely problematic elements (r*pe, i*cest, fake su*cide etc) and people will still be all over it like "this is SO good" and I'm like it's one thing to have bad taste but?
I know I'm going all over the place here but what I'm trying to say is I almost feel like wlw pieces have more things working against them (misogyny, fetishism, lesbophobia/biphobia etc. ) and is more heavily criticized which I feel like is making it harder for more things to come out even though I'm pretty sure there's a demand for it? And it's frustrating because I feel like nobody else really sees any of this

Top 10 BLs I watched in 2021
As the year comes to a close I’ve decided to take a look at all the BLs I watched in these past 12 months and determine my faves. Notice that it’s BLs I watched in 2021, not BLs released in 2021.
1. Manner of Death (Thailand, 2020)
Even though the majority of this aired in 2020, it wasn’t finished until January 2021 so it counts as a 2021 watch for me. God the theories we discussed after every episode, we all must’ve looked absolutely insane. Peak clown behaviour... Anyways, this is the direction I hope more BLs take in the future. Not necessarily crime/thriller (though that IS one of my favourites and I would not complain about more of that) but what I want to see is BL delving into a variety of genres. You could see how a more serious and mature approach really elevated MaxTul and their acting to a new level and I wish to see more CPs explore that in the future.
2. We Best Love (Taiwan, 2021)
I distinctly remember the moment I scrolled through WeTV and saw this being announced and thought “Oh well, this looks like a small passion project, might check it out.” Well... it IS a passion project but it definitely isn’t small anymore. I recently rewatched this and to be quite honest, the story is not the most amazing thing you’ll ever watch (shoutout to S2EP2 though, that shit was mental). But the reason why I can’t let go of this one is the actors. Apart from loving the supporting actors (Tian and Evan specifically), SamYu simply has me in a chokehold point blank. No other CP compares to them. And even though I‘m scared of what kind of drama plot will be introduced in S3 I absolutely cannot wait for it simply because of all the SamYu content we will get from the promo. Like… @schnaf and I have a wishlist for result entertainment of things we need them to do - and those moving cat ears that read your brain waves are on the very top of it.
3. Bad Buddy (Thailand, 2021)
Ok, I know this hasn’t finished airing yet but I think we can all agree that this deserves to be on here. I heavily doubt they will fuck up the ending so we’ll let it slide. Bad Buddy really looked at all the things a Thai BL can do wrong and then said “Hold my engineering diploma, we’ll show you how it’s done.” Like... it still uses a lot of typical tropes, nothing about the story is particularly groundbreaking or anything we haven’t seen yet. And still, it works so so well. I think Ohm and Nanon’s phenomenal acting contributes a big part to this. But also P’Aof just knows what he’s doing. As much as I praised MoD for exploring a new genre, Bad Buddy proves that you can take all the tried and true things, like a uni setting and an enemies to lovers plot, and still stand out from the crowd. ALSO: Possible/very likely GL side couple instead of randomly pairing up all the best friends? We love to see it!
4. Word of Honor (China, 2021)
After The Untamed we’ve all been waiting for the next big danmei. Is it as good as The Untamed? No. But nothing will ever be as good as The Untamed so that’s okay. I’ll admit I gave up on trying to understand the plot halfway through but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy this drama. Everyone involved really did the best they could do to bring this novel to life by toeing the line of censorship. And with that ending? What more can you wish for honestly, considering the circumstances. WoH, at its core, is a story about bad people and I do love me some villains! Starting from WKX and continuing with so many beloved side characters, a lot of which were badass women, I can’t help but love this show.
5. I Promised You the Moon (Thailand, 2021)
Okay, I’m not a big fan of second seasons when it comes to BL because more often than not we’ll be treated to a cheating plot and IPYTM is not an exception to this. However, ITSAY was already revolutionary in how it broke the mold of what highschool/uni BLs were supposed to look and be like. And this continues in IPYTM. The whole thing just feel so much more raw. A lot of Thai BLs are goofy and ridiculous and that’s okay, those are fun as well. But ITSAY and IPYTM feel more like reality. You can feel how BK and PP really put their all into this project and I hope this shows producers that there are many different ways to tackle BLs.
6. Don‘t Say No (Thailand, 2021)
For the same reason I tend to avoid second seasons I also tend to avoid established relationship plots. Until I watched Don’t Say No. It’s laughable how bad the trailer is compared to the actual show. In fact, it almost stopped me from watching this. Well, thank god I still did! I think LeoFiat are the couple with the best communication skills out of all the BLs I’ve watched so far. They have a very specific relationship dynamic that could definitely be interpreted as dom/sub but - and this is the thing - it’s healthy! Which is why I can’t believe the people who made Tharntype also made DSN. To me, it feels like the complete opposite. As for JaFirst: I hope they’ll get another series because they do have a lot of chemistry.
7. Couple of Mirrors (China, 2021)
Listen, I know I said BL but CoM deserves a spot on this list, period. I went into this knowing nothing and was positively surprised by the mature subject matter. Who doesn’t love a bit of murder, crime and intrigue? On top of that, our two mains were just way too cute! And just like with WoH, considering the censorship this drama went through we still got a lot of things that definitely hinted at more than just friendship. I also really loved the historical setting in the Republican Era and really want to see more of that. Thank god we’ll get season 2, right?
8. Be Loved In House: I Do (Taiwan, 2021)
Is the premise of this enemies to lovers plot ridiculous? Yes, but who even cares. What can I say? I’m a sucker for omg they were roommates! This was like a fun little snack: it didn’t feel too serious and god, did it have some ridiculous scenes. But sometimes, that’s all you need. Obviously, this wasn’t something that will stick with you forever, but that’s okay. The mains did a very solid job and we even got a bit of steamy action towards the end, so all in all I would definitely recommend this.
9. Together With Me (Thailand, 2017)
This is on the list simply for S1EP1 scene 1 alone. Like HELLO? I watched this after MoD so I already knew how MaxTul act with each other but still… insanity. Unfortunately, the trope of the jealous (ex-) girlfriend is heavy with this one but it also gave us one of THE BEST female side characters in all of BL: Queen Yiwha! We love, we stan, we ship her with Fai (yes, we’ll ignore Bad Romance for our sanity’s sake). Major point deduction for the creepy doctor though...
10. Why R U? (Thailand, 2020)
Half of this was great (Fightor) and half of this was boring (SaifahZon). Which is why I have to say I’m very glad Fightor ended up becoming the main couple at some point. Of course they had their ups and downs and some scenes were... questionable but in the end I did enjoy their story a lot.

Honorable mentions:
EP 9 & 10 of Y-Destiny (2021)
Kaengputh my beloved! There really wasn’t enough time in just these two episodes to tell their story so it all just felt a bit rushed but First and Toru made up for it with their phenomenal performance. I really hope these two will get their own series soon because their on-screen chemistry is INSANE.
Until We Meet Again (2019)
Okay, I’ll admit I skipped through most of this. It’s in honorable mentions because of WinTeam. No regrets.
My Engineer (2020)
Congrats for being the worst BL I’ve ever watched yet somehow still making me obsessed for like two weeks straight. This is the complete opposite of Bad Buddy. It looked at all the previous Thai BLs and said “I can do worse!” If it weren’t for the side pairings I would’ve dropped it. Filled to the brim with every bad BL trope you can think of it really cranks up the cringe-o-meter but then again it was all so ridiculous and trashy that it was funny. (Also, I will forever stay mad about how Ryan got the absolute worst dub in existence and then got kicked off the show.)
Kpop ship compilations
Listen, Kpop and BL are inseparably linked in my head forever now. From actor/idol friendships to idols starring in BLs themselves to Kpop fanfiction being adapted into BLs - there is no way I could ever separate these two. So including this just makes sense to me. Top ships I enjoyed this year were: Chanlix, Minsung, Jilix, Changjin (all Stray Kids), Woosan (Ateez), every possible BTS ship you can imagine but particularly Jikook, Sope, Hopekook and Yoonmin, and most recently Yeonbin (TXT).

Four and 1/2 Stars. Very well done. Chef Briwa takes you thru the essential fundamentals of a trained chef. I was very pleased with his presentation and the skill set he builds. Great emphasis is placed on developing abilities (including tasting skills, wine pairing, equipment, spices, sauces and stocks, ingredients, etc..), rather than on specific recipes. Chef Briwa does use many complete dishes/recipes in his presentations. I took the half star because of a few too many digressions into Thai dishes that struck me as excessively sweet, and tertiary at best to the rest of the course.

Senpai noticed me 🙀😄 Thanks for following me!
I love your blog! You make so many interesting and informative Posts! Thanks to you I try to notice more details while watching BL. And my BL-to-watch-list is now endless xD
When did you start watching/consuming BL material? You seem to know every BL that exists, so I was wondering how long it took you to get to this point.
Tumblr media
Aw, thank you for the ask, kohai! (or maybe nong?)
How Long Have I been Watching BL?
Well, I read yaoi back in the late 90s early 00s so that was kinda my start. It's one of the reasons I know a lot about the source tropes in particular. I pretty much read any yaoi I could get ahold of in translation.
But back when the first live action yaois (proto BLs) were coming out of Japan in 2005+ they were impossible to get hold of, especially with subs. Also I got slightly distracted by some pesky higher education bullshit.
Tumblr media
So I kinda drifted into early American indie queer cinema for a while.
I started becoming aware of BL as a thing around late 2017, but I only watched what I could easily find with subs on YouTube. So like BL cuts of Love Sick and Puppy Honey and the Kiss series. Lots of bootlegs and bad subs and FMVs. Love By Chance was my first real addiction.
Tumblr media
Then I got really sick late 2019 (before C19) and bored out of my skull, discovered UWMA, and started to dive into it in a slightly more obsessive fan way.
Then with lockdown and the great quar suddenly I had a ton of time on my hands. (About half my job is travel so not traveling, it turns out, frees up a ton of time. Also I don't really have a life.)
Tumblr media
I went deep into Thai BL and then Taiwanese BL. Rediscovered that Tumblr was the place to talk about it. Resurrected, and renamed this old blog. Got on MDL, and figured out Daily Motion, Drama Cool, and Viki. And ta da!
Tumblr media
About midway through our first major lockdown I decided I should be organized about the whole thing and spent two days putting together this elaborate tracking spreadsheet, because I can't just enjoy anything. I HAVE TO ORGANIZE IT.
Tumblr media
That, of course, meant I should watch everything I could (to fill in the spreadsheet), and chronicle it ALL.
Specifically I got intersted in the early stuff out of Japan and China that bridges yaoi manga and BL. I'm one of the few that bothers with these because they are deeply problematic but I did discover some gems like Seven Days and Just Friends?
Tumblr media
I'm currently at 266 shows/movies/microfilms.
There's still quite a bit (mostly early Japanese and Taiwanese, and Korean B-plots, and GL) that I can't for the life of me get ahold of subbed (probably about 75 or so).
I stopped following Pinoy, Chinese, and Vietnamese stuff carefully, but I do try to keep up with the other four BL producers (Thailand, Korean, Japan, and Taiwan). Thailand doesn't make that easy these days.
But BL and Kdramas are all I watch for entertainment now. I don't watch any Western media at all anymore. Try to stay away from most social media and don't read as much as I once did.
Tumblr media
Once I resume regular travel next year I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep up this pace, but I can manage it through the end of the year.
Then I get to pretend my 2020-2021 was well spent. I want all my memories of this time in my life to be BL.
