The Feast [Gwledd] (2021)
Tumblr media
It’s almost as if we’re in a swell of populist unrest against the billionaire class. Will anything come of it? Probably not; dipshits like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos will laugh at us from their spaceships as they fuck us into oblivion. But we have this shining moment to decry them as bastards through art. This Welsh-language chamber piece is in dialogue with the likes of The Menu and Parasite. Eat the rich and all that. One wildly fucked-up Welsh family are living large, entertaining guests and hoping to capitalize on the outcomes even as their inner life collapses. Is this the result of familial maladjustment, or the land itself conspiring against their aims? While they do a plenty good enough job of destroying themselves, the land on which they’ve built their austere retreat bears no kindness toward them. Culturally based cruelty swiftly becomes universal horror as insanity claims the lot of them. Cadi the servant becomes an agent of chaos even as the host family and guests lose everything to them.
In many ways this feels like a successor to the works of Yorgos Lanthimos. The subjugation and control closely linked with lineage mirrors that of Dogtooth, and all of the class satire of The Favourite can be found here. It’s absurd in a specific way adjacent to which the Greek auteur manages the tone of his projects. Everyone behaves like a crazy person, but just in such a fashion as to make that clear to the audience, who are meant to exist outside this sphere of influence, to know it’s all bonkers. The real capper for all of this is the demented rendition of “Suo Gân,” perhaps most recognizable for most from Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun and yet so much more effective here in its sheer insanity.
THE RULES
SIP
Foot pain. Ouchie.
Abstract art! These fuckers be bougie!
Cadi is asked to do something.
Cadi does something fucking bizarre.
BIG DRINK
An act title appears.
Narrow corridors.
Health code violation (could also be something bizarre Cadi does).

Remembering Welsh entertainer Doris Hare MBE, born March 1st, 1905.
She was born into a travelling theatrical family and made her stage debut in a speaking role aged three, then worked for decades in music hall, variety and musical theatre, and in the 1960s for the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre.
During World War Two she hosted a radio programme especially for merchant mariners, Shipmates Ashore, and became 'the Sweetheart of the Merchant Navy', for which she was awarded the MBE.
She found later fame as 'Mum' in On the Buses, on television and in the cinema adaptations (1969-73), and in three 'Confessions' sex comedies, which were some of the most profitable British films of the 1970s.

Her film career spanned 60 years, from Night Mail in 1935 to her final credit, Second Best, directed by Chris Menges and starring William Hurt and Keith Allen, in 1994.
According to a tribute in the Borehamwood and Elstree Times:
"...At the grand age of 87, Doris Hare was to take to the West End stage one last time. Doris appeared at the Playhouse Theatre in the Ray Cooney farce, It Runs in the Family. The role saw her reunited opposite former Benny Hill straight man, Henry McGee..."
She passed away at Denville Hall, the residential care home for artistes, on May 30th, 2000.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - REVIEW
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS
An alien is left behind on Earth and is saved by young Elliot who decides to keep him hidden. While the task force hunts for it, Elliot and his siblings form an emotional bond with their new friend.
youtube
There's no other film that stokes as much feeling for me or is as personal to me than E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. Much like some of my feelings for Star Wars, objectivity goes out the window to an extent here as well. My relationship with this film dates back to my childhood in the late 1980's and early 1990's. I grew up loving E.T. and watched it more times than I can count but more than anything else, this is also my first true horror experience. Take a moment to consider some of the imagery and some of the sequences including the opening scenes in the dark forest with the haunting music and strange creatures; it's absolutely terrifying stuff. E.T. is probably still the most terrifying film I have ever seen and I think remains the only film I've ever seen that gave me nightmares as a child and those feeling of uneasiness remains with me to this day. But even at that young age, despite being scared every time, I wanted to watch it time and again because the film is much more than just those few scary scenes and now I've finally seen it on the big screen for its 40th Anniversary.
Tumblr media
E.T. has a little bit of everything; its opening credits could be mistaken for a horror movie, the premise is very science fiction but it's also a drama of friendship and childhood. My most recent viewing on the big screen also highlighted something I've hadn't really noticed before; E.T. is a very funny film and not really in a deliberate or silly way. There are lines delivered and moments that might go over the head of a young child, but as an adult there is plenty of straight comedy that is just judged perfectly. While I can't empathize with director Steven Spielberg's feelings of being a 10 year boy dealing with the aftermath of divorce, the story about friendship is something we all definitely can. Spielberg has sometimes been accused of being manipulative; War Horse for instance was Spielberg at his most however with E.T. the soaring score could be considered as manipulative if not for the strength of the characters and drama. E.T works as well as it does because all the characters are sympathetic and likeable; Henry Thomas delivers perhaps the best young actors performance I've ever seen.
Tumblr media
John Williams has composed some truly great scores including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Jaws, Jurassic Park and Harry Potter. But it says quite a lot about a score when the director edits sequences of their film to that score and Williams' work on E.T. might well be his finest. It's a soaring triumph that will pull at your heartstrings and is the beating heart of the movie and it wouldn't work nearly as well as it does without it. For a film now 40 years old, it's aged very gracefully and it's visual effects still look effective enough compared to the modern blockbusters we see today. The E.T. animatronic and costumes work tremendously well and covey enough expression and movement to make him a believable character. E.T. is a timeless classic and Spielberg's 'small' film is just as impressive in 2022 as it was in 1982. It's still fucking scary!
Tumblr media
VERDICT
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial remains a timeless classic that has a little bit of everything for everyone. If you haven't seen it or not had the chance to experience it on the big screen, you'd be mad to not to go out and catch it now.
5/5
