non-Natives cannot be w/nd/go/g. non-Natives cannot be w/nd/gokin, nor w/nd/go extranths, nor any other sort of w/nd/go identity. i don’t say this to be exclusionary, i say this as a Native person who’s tired of our culture and religion being bastardized, appropriated, and stolen by colonizers. i say this as someone who’s tired of plain old racism being excused by those who straight-up don’t care about Native voices
a w/nd/go is not just some cannibal ice monster, nor is it some deer cryptid, nor is it merely a Native personification of evil. it is far, far more than that, and it requires cultural knowledge and experience to really understand. this is knowledge and experience that non-Natives are not let into because of centuries of us sharing our culture with people who take it, misunderstand it, silence us when we try to correct them about it, and then continue to oppress Natives while enjoying cherrypicked parts of our culture
if you, as a non-Native, believe that you may be a w/nd/go; no, you are not. i’d recommend looking into monsters and such that aren’t from closed cultures, as well as potentially taking a look at invented species from things such as the furry culture, and then proceeding to uplift Native voices on this topic
non-Natives are encouraged to reblog this, and please, don’t uncensor the word unless you have to. i don’t want anything coming after me that i’m not prepared for

The reason the word "Wendigo" began to be censored online has nothing to do with respect or whether or not it's offensive (not all Native people who talk about it censor it) and more to do with the fact that it's a scary, hungry, dangerous spirit and people think saying the name aloud risks attracting its attention.
(Although for what it's worth, the idea that we shouldn't say the name of the Bad Thing because to do so would be to invite the Bad Thing is a widespread, very old, very human concept that's also been applied to things like shadow people and the fae, and in certain cultures, to things like bears and whales.)
I leave it uncensored for the same reason I leave everything uncensored, so people can block it or Word Replacer if they want to. But I do make it a point not to say it out loud when I'm out in the woods.

Since the vote was 50/50, I'll choose the topic of discussion. Wendigos.........
Let me start off by saying that I do not know the origin of wendigos, but I know enough about them. Starting with their natural appearance, they look like a tall and thin deformed crackhead, with sharp/short fangs, and long fingers. They have white eyes and are very resilient. When they die and go into a human body, the host will have glassy like eyes, increased physical attributes, and have an insatiable hunger for human flesh. They almost have to eat every 2-3 hours until their hunger is unbearable. After their humanity is fully gone, they most likely move to wooded areas or dark areas where they feed on animals. If a human being stumbles upon them, it'll be more like a game for them....

Weird Admission: I've always called Belos/Philips monster form a Wendigo. My brain saw antlers and lanky limbs and thought of those spirits of hunger and starvation.
Tumblr media
Fun Fact! Wendigos never really had antlers/deer skulls until Stephen Kings Pet Semetary. Then, they were all the rage. Look up some pictures of the OG wendigos, they're real cool.

Cannibalism is the ultimate taboo for humans. And no one talks about it. Because its something inherently vicious and cruel. The reason why we feel uncomfortable is due to its desperate and yet, inherently human nature.
Because people never want to consider what they'd resort to when their desperation pushes them over the edge. At that very moment, their greed for sustenance takes ahold of them and pushes them to the very end of their perceived humanity.
They turn symbolic for something far less than human and further more insidious.
People who consider themselves morally righteous would never hesitate a single breath to condemn such an act.
It's an act of cruelty, yet it makes you pitiful when enacted in desperate times. From then on, you exist as both a victim of unfortunate circumstance as well as a being inherently considered less than human.
A pitiful monster.
I admire the concept of Wendigos in this regard. While I'm not extremely familiar with Native American culture or folklore in any measure, I particularly appreciate their depictions as emaciated humans cursed with an insatiable greed for human flesh.
(No they do not have horns or an animal skull, they resemble starved humans with their skin stretched tightly over their skull)
Wendigos are symbolic of a person's greed when they act on their selfish whims and desires, uncaring of other people's misfortune or suffering.

Anyone who thinks there’s only one acceptable way to depict a Wendigo has never actually looked at traditional Wendigo lore.

The Wend*go is Not Your Cryptid
I'm Algonquin/Ojibwe and this is a spirit that comes from our teachings.
As a young child, the elders taught me to never even SPEAK its name, to not even sing its songs. When we sang a song about it during drumming group one year, we all got in trouble.
You do not spell the word or speak the word.
It's NOT a "cryptid" or a "spooky story" for white people to appropriate.
Its bearly spoken about in our own communities, and even then, only very carefully.
Again, not because its "creepy" but because its respected and something in our traditions that is not played around with; so its certainly not for non-ojibwe/algonquin people to speak about whatsoever. Period.
