Hello! I'm not sure if you do single characters or not but What if the reader (who's a big fan of horror) wanted to show Alastor some classic horror movies. Their reasoning? "So you can make fun of it," If you do a collection of characters, then it can be like a movie night for the hotel.
Hiya love!! Yes, I do! In fact I'm currently working on a longer Alastor fic at the moment :)) it's like this request was made for me bc I 100% will force Alastor to watch the Scream franchise with me 😭 it's my fave. I'm a mega horror fan, haha! Maybe I'll have to write for slashers again like I used to! I'll just write Al since he deserves some love for himself!! Pls excuse me bc now I'm gonna be thinking about 1920s GhostFace Alastor 😩😩🩷💕
What's Your Favorite Scary Movie? || Alastor x reader
tags: fluff, gn!reader, Alastor critiquing horror media, plot to the Scream franchise, my horror obsession might be showing lmao

Getting Alastor to have anything to do with post 1930s technology was a task and a half. He might've made a deal with Vaggie not to have anything to do with such frivolous technology, but you weren't Vaggie. You were his sweet, dear partner. And he'd never admit just how tightly wrapped he was around your finger.
He seemed to genuinely enjoy the first few Halloween movies as well as the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Alastor took a great of interest with Hannibal Lector from The Silence of Lambs. He was deeply considering watching the television series you told him of. He thinks Freddy Krueger is a piece of shit and wished he could do him in with his own hands.
The next movie, however, seemed more susceptible to being torn to pieces by his ever-watchful eye.
"So the point of this picture show is what... Billy is angry because his mother abandoned him and he doesn't know how to deal with those big feelings at his age?" Alastor gives an indignant snort, looking bemused at the old television screen currently playing a VHS of Wes Craven's 1996 slasher classic Scream. That's as new of tech as Alastor would allow, so you made do.
Snorting out a laugh, you lean against his arm. Alastor's crackling gaze flickers to you his smile softening around the edges. He did very much adore your laugh.
"That about sums it up, yes," you grin, biting down on the corner of your chocolate bar.
Alastor leans his back against the sofa, pulling the blanket wrapped around you two closer. "I don't know how that Macher boy thinks that peer pressure is a justifiable defense for murdering people." He unwraps his own piece of bitter chocolate and pops it into his mouth. "Own up to your choices, for Heaven's sake. And people find these two attractive? Are they not in love with one another? Surely anyone with two good working eyes could see this."
The sixth Scream movie damn near has Alastor foaming at the mouth, each and every movie felt as repetitive as the last with slight twists and changes. He was polite to keep most critiques to himself, eyeing how much you clearly enjoyed showing something so near and dear to your heart. While the plot was rather lackluster, he had to admit he was interested in the severe brutality of the sixth and despite his opposition to new media, felt that it was a decent enough film. With such a repetitive storyline, he didn't really expect that sort of twist.
"There's one more we can watch!" You grin, holding up your copy of Scary Movie. Alastor's eyes look ready to pop out of his skull as if to say 'Oh god, another??' "I don't think you'll guess who the GhostFace is!"
"Is it the man called Doofy?"

accidental drunk confessions ~ matthew lillard
word count: 2971
request?: yes!
@shinichirosanos
“Can you do a Matthew Lillard x female actress reader imagine where everyone kinda assumes they're dating and maybe they're at the Scream 1996 premiere and during interviews they constantly get questions about what their relationship is, but they deny it all the time and then later that night one of them finally confesses their feelings? 💛”
description: after being questioned about their relationship all the time, one of them lets it slip that they want more than friendship while drunk

I sighed and splashed a handful of col water on my burning face, not caring about if it ruined my makeup. I knew the night of the premiere was going to be rough, but I really didn’t expect for it to be this rough just from the red carpet.
I was lucky to have gotten cast in my first big film while still very new into my acting career. It was a comedy-horror called Scream, directed by Nightmare on Elm Street director Wes Craven, so it was a pretty big deal. I had auditioned with very little expectations on getting the role since I was a new actress and all. So no one was more surprised than I was when Wes himself called me to tell me I got the role.
It was a dream come true and everyone in the cast was so kind that we became a big friend group very fast.
And then there was Matthew. Sweet, goofy Matthew who always made everyone laugh on set, and who managed to steal my heart from the very first moment I met him.
But dating your co-workers is a big no-no in any profession. Even if the movie ended with Stu seemingly being killed and my character being one of the five survivors, who knew where a potential sequel could lead us? Not to mention the fact that I wasn’t about to mess up my first big gig by risking an awkward work environment after dating - or being rejected by - a co-worker.
All those words to say I was too afraid to ask him out.
The night of the premiere had come before we knew it and I was beyond giddy with excitement...until I got to my first interview of the night and the third question was about Matthew.
“Some have said that you and your co-star, Matthew Lillard, have been very close behind the scenes. Anything going on there between you two?”
The question took me by surprise, but I managed to stumble through an answer confirming that we were just friends and move on to the next interview...
...who asked me the same thing.
As did the next one.
And the next one.
And the next one.
Until I had to make the decision to completely bypass the rest of the red carpet and escape into the venue. That’s how I found myself alone in the bathroom, trying to cool myself down.
A knock came at the locked door. “Occupied!”
“It’s me.”
I unlocked the door and opened it just a crack so I could peer out at Neve. When I saw it was just her, I let her in and quickly locked the door again.
“Are you okay?” she asked. “I saw you basically running off the red carpet.”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just overwhelmed,” I said, which wasn’t a total lie.
“Does it have to do with the interviewers asking about you and Matthew?”
I looked at her in disbelief, which caused Neve to chuckle. “I went after you and was asked about it, too. Apparently your potential relationship is a big scoop.”
I groaned and rolled my eyes. “Why? I’m a nobody. This is my first big acting job.”
“On set romance would be huge for them I guess.” She reached for some paper towels and ran some water over them. “You have mascara running down your face.”
She wiped the black smudges from my cheeks and under my eyes. I mumbled a soft, “Thank you.”
“We gotta get to the premiere. It’s starting soon,” she reminded me
I sighed. “I can’t face Matthew. They definitely asked him the same questions. It’s gonna be awkward.”
“You only have to see him in the movie. Sit between me and Rose, and then hang out with us at the after party. You’ll be fine.”
I smiled and hugged Neve. “You’re such a good friend. “Thank you, Neve.”
It was hard not to glance at Matthew as we entered for the premiere. I kept my eyes trained on the movie screen the entire time, but I was still very aware of his presence. He had sat just behind us with Skeet and Jamie. It took everything in my power not to turn around and look at him or ask him what the interviewers had said to him.
I was glad when the time came around for the after party. I didn’t want to go at first, but now I definitely needed a couple drinks in hopes of forgetting this entire night.
The after party was at Wes’ mansion, which was big enough to hold basically everyone who worked on Scream. Food and drinks were provided and Wes was even offering to let anyone who was drinking stay the night. The party was already in full swing when I arrived. All of the cast were there already and the crew were slowly trickling in. When I walked into the house of course the first person I saw was Matthew.
He had a drink in his hand and was laughing at something one of the crew members had said. Hearing his laugh caused my heart to flip in my chest. I didn’t realize I was just stood in the doorway, staring like a creep, until someone entering basically shoved me out of the way. I stumbled forward, stopping myself from face planting onto the ground. When I managed to stabilize myself, I looked up to see Matthew was now looking at me. My heart started pounding as he turned to approach me.
“Hey,” he said. “What happened to you on the red carpet? I was hoping to see you when I got there.”
“I got a little overwhelmed during the interviews and stuff,” I responded.
Is he going to talk about the interviews? Is he going to bring up what people are apparently saying about us?
“That makes sense. The first red carpet can be hard, especially for a big movie like this.” He threw his arm over my shoulder and pulled my against him. “Just stick with me, kid. I’ll help you through it.”
I found myself speechless, so I just nodded. I let Matthew lead me towards the kitchen for a drink. I let Matthew lead me towards the kitchen for a drink. My original plan of avoiding him the whole night was effectively down the drain the moment he put a drink in my hand. However, my plan to get drunk to forget the night was still very much in play as I made sure my cup stayed full.
I was incredibly drunk when Neve and Rose finally found me lounging on one of Wes’ couches, my legs draped over Matthew’s lap while Skeet was sat opposite of us in a chair.
“There you are,” Neve said. “I thought you were hanging out with us tonight.”
“Matt found me first,” I slurred. I giggled and added, “Isn’t that ironic?”
Rose and Neve shared a look before Rose said, “Maybe we get you some water and get you home.”
“You guys don’t have to rush off,” Skeet said. “I mean, (Y/N) definitely needs some water, but we can all hang out.”
“I don’t want water,” I whined. “I like being drunk. No feelings when you’re drunk. No thoughts or worries or anything.”
“I’m fourth on you getting water,” Matthew said. “It’ll decrease the intensity of your hangover.”
I looked over at him and sheepishly smiled. I reached out and cupped his face with one hand. “You’re so sweet, looking out for me and shit. No wonder I like you so much.”
Even through my drunken haze I could feel a sense of panic go through the room from everyone besides Matthew. My rush on him was probably the worst kept secret of all time. I had told Rose and Neve about it early on since I viewed them as such close friends, but Skeet and Jamie figured it out on their own. Somehow, Matthew was the only one who was oblivious to my feelings for him.
“Hey (Y/N), maybe it is time to go,” Skeet said.
Matthew was chuckling at what I had said, either ignoring Skeet or not hearing him speak. “I like you too, (Y/N).”
“Yeah but you only like me. I like you. Like, romantically.”
I was pulled off of the couch the second the words were out of my mouth. I drunkenly giggled and waved goodbye to Matthew and Skeet as Neve and Rose quickly carried me towards the exit. My head was swimming from the alcohol so much that not even the fresh air helped to sober me up.
Neve helped me into the backseat of her car, laying me on my side in case I got sick. She and Rose got into the front, rolled down the windows so I had some fresh air blowing in on me, and started up the car.
“She’s gonna regret that in the morning,” was the last thing I remembered hearing before I passed out.
~~~~~~
And I certainly did regret everything the next morning when I woke up and felt like a million nails had been poured into my head and were shaken up. I tried to open my eyes but still the dull sunlight coming though the curtains caused the headache to be much worse.
I dragged myself out of bed eventually so I could get some water, only to find a half empty glass on my bedside table. I finished the contents of it and continued my pain filled journey to the kitchen, which I knew would also have Aspirin there to take.
When I stepped into my living room, I let out a yelp upon seeing someone asleep on my couch. My outburst caused them to wake with a start.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I wanted to be here when you woke up in case you needed some help with the hangover,” Matthew responded as he groggily sat up.
“Okay, better question: how did you get here? I may not remember a lot about last night, but I do remember that Neve and Rose were the ones who brought me home.”
“When you guys left, I followed because I was worried for you,” he explained. “I caught up before Neve drove away and practically begged her to let me come with you guys.”
I cringed as cloudy memories including Matthew came rushing back. It should’ve been a good sign that I hadn’t weirded him out so much that he didn’t want to be around me, but I knew what came next here. We were going to have “the talk” where he would reject me and I would have to act like I was okay with that as not to ruin our friendship.
I went to the kitchen to get what I had come for before returning to the living room. I popped an Aspirin into my mouth and downed a mouthful of water, then sat down next to Matthew on the couch.
“Alright,” I sighed. “Let’s talk about the elephant in the room then.”
He looked at me in confusion for a moment before realization crossed his face. “Oh...so you do remember...that?”
“Admitting that I have a crush on you? Yeah, I unfortunately remember,” I said. “I did it in the heat of the moment while drunk. I never meant for you to find out about it. I’m sorry if it made you uncomfortable, or if it weirds you out. We can both just forget about it and move past the whole ordeal.”
“Is that what you want?” he asked.
I wanted to scream Of course not! I want you to like me back. I want you to kiss me, to hold me, to put your hands on me and call me yours! But I knew that was a bad idea. I had already embarrassed myself enough for one lifetime.
“It’s what’s best for us,” I said. “I don’t want to ruin this friendship.”
“Ruin it how?” he asked.
“By having things be awkward between us because I like you and I know you don’t like me back.”
Matthew looked at me for a moment, looking like he was trying to fight back a smile, before he said, “Can you let me talk before we make this decision?”
I looked at him, curiously, and nodded for him to proceed.
“(Y/N), I’ve had a big, fat crush on you since the moment you walked into the first table read for the movie. You were so timid and shy, but you were also extremely beautiful and when you were reading your lines, I could see you had this confidence in that was so strong for someone who claims to be such a newbie. I don’t know what it was, but all of those things combined just drew me to you. The more I got to know you, the more those feelings I had grew.”
It felt like his words had shut off my brain completely. I had no idea how to respond. I just looked at him, blankly, like a complete idiot. I could see him watching me, waiting for some sort of reaction.
“Really?” I finally asked, but then immediately cringed at my own stupid question.
He chuckled, though. He reached for one of my hands and gave it a small squeeze. “Really.”
“But you never said anything,” I said.
“I was afraid you wouldn’t feel the same way.”
I scoffed. “You afraid? You’re like...the opposite of afraid. You were always so confident and fearless both on set and off.”
“Yeah, but not when it came to admitting how I felt about you. No one knew because I was afraid of it getting back to you. I kept it to myself the entire time, which was the hardest thing I ever had to do because whenever I saw you I just wanted to admit everything.”
I let his words soak in for a moment before burying my face in my hands. I couldn’t help but start laughing at the situation, which earned me another confused look from Matthew.
“I got super duper drunk last night because I wanted to forget the interviewers who were asking me if we were in a relationship,” I admitted to him. “I started freaking out because I thought that you were going to feel awkward around me because of what they were saying, so I intended to get drunk, hang out with Neve and Rose, and then make a quick escape home before seeing you.”
“They were asking me about you, too. That’s why I got worried when you left the red carpet and it felt like you were avoiding me. I thought you were avoiding me.”
“I was, but I was doing it because I thought it was going to make things awkward between us!”
We both looked at each other and burst out into laughter realizing how twisted we had the entire situation. All of it could’ve been resolved if we had both just been courageous enough to actually talk about our feelings, but we were both absolutely chickens.
We both leaned back onto the couch as a silence took over. The next question was “where do we go from here?”, but I think we both knew the answer to that without even explicitly asking. I looked over at Matthew and finally gave myself a moment to take him in - while sober anyways. Everything about him was so perfect; perfect skin, perfect blue eyes, perfect messy brown hair, perfect lips that always turned up into a perfect smile.
Perfect lips that I really wanted to kiss.
So, I decided to go for it. No more chickening out, no more excuses. Now that everything was out on the table, I decided to make the first move.
I leaned forward. When Matthew turned to look at me, I quickly attached my lips to his before I could let myself get too scared to do so. It was awkward at first due to how roughly I managed to smash our lips together. But Matthew pulled away and cupped my face in his hands, then leaned forward to kiss me properly.
Just like everything else about him, the kiss was perfect.
I could’ve stayed like that all day. I definitely wanted to. I just wanted to lay on the couch with him and feel his lips on mine and his hands on my face. I’d even be so bold as to take him back to my bedroom if he wanted to come, and we’d never have to leave my bed again if we didn’t want to.
Matthew pulled away first, a big, goofy grin on his face. “That was nice.”
I giggled and buried my head in the crook of his neck. I had managed to forget the pain in my head and the nauseous churning in my stomach for a while, but now it was starting to come back to me and my giggled quickly turned to a groan.
“You poor thing,” Matthew said, putting an arm around me and rubbing my back, soothingly. “Let’s get you back to bed with some water and something very bland so that you can eat but don’t actually throw up.”
“I don’t even think I could eat anything bland,” I admitted. “But I appreciate that you’d want to help me.”
“Of course I want to help you. Can’t let my girl go through this hangover alone.”
Hearing him say the words “my girl” definitely helped me to forget the agony I was in, even if it was just for a quick second.
At least there was one good thing that came out of this whole drunken ordeal, I thought as Matthew helped me to a stand and led me back to my bed.
@pscentral event 06: favorite characters/performers            skeet ulrich as billy loomis and matthew lillard as stu macher in SCREAM (1996) dir. wes craven
+ BONUS
Tumblr media
Skeet: There’s something very fresh and free and rebellious about all the performances that I don’t know if you get in this day and age. I don’t know what it is.
Matthew: It’s completely losing our minds! I mean, that whole last sequence is us on a 10 and chewing scenery like no one’s businessIn the climactic kitchen confrontation, Billy and Stu explain their entire villainous plan to Sidney while threatening her with a g*n and a kn!fe and screaming lines like “Guess how you’re gonna d!e!” They also end up maniacally stabbing each other.. The idea that Wes Craven sat behind the monitor and was like, This is great. We were crazy! If I ever saw somebody do that on a set, I’d be like, “Dude, bring it down 58 percent.”
Skeet: Maybe even 70!
Matthew: You would just be like, “Fix it! You’re too big! You’re eating the scenery like you’ve never seen a film camera!” But there we were, completely screaming at each other. Like, what are we doing?
The Lavatory scene in Red Eye's final shooting script and the movie
One of my previous posts was about how much the first script draft of Red Eye differed from the final product. The draft discussed in this post is more or less final. This draft has all the changes made after Rachel and Cillian were cast as leads and after the test screenings. But there are still some features which didn't make the cut into the final product. I'm not gonna analyse the whole script here, but shippers' favorite scene - the lavatory scene. Yeah, you can always rely on this scene to bring some juicy stuff.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Okay let's start from the moment Lisa enters the bathroom alone.
Tumblr media
Frankly speaking, for now, I prefer the movie version. Especially the line "Okay, get up" instead of "Oh my God..." Wes Craven said in the DVD commentary about this moment:
This was tricky, between making her totally collapse, but not have her totally pathetic. And she very quickly gets herself under control.
Tumblr media
Next, there is an interesting description of Rippner:
Tumblr media
Also, the message on the mirror was meant to be revealed slightly earlier, but whatever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not sure about Rippner's lines here, because half of it is barely audible in the film. Also quite ironic that the underlined part is not in the movie at all.
Tumblr media
Okay, now really important stuff starts kicking in. Rippner practically spills out the fact that he is ATTRACTED to Lisa right at her face. The script makes it clear, that she now knows this and tries to use his attraction (and his regret) to persuade him to give up on Keefe assassination plan. Funny enough, she almost succeeds until he notices her scar. Personally, I think "You're beautiful..." line (and hair brushing) should have stayed in the final cut. Not only for the sake of the ship, but for the fact that without it Lisa's "You don't have to do this" sounds really naive.
Tumblr media
Some of you may argue that this is all relevant for the movie, they just made it more subtle. Well, Movie-Lisa's best guess that Movie-Rippner might be attracted to her is the way Cillian looks at Rachel. On one hand many people point out that they do have chemistry and sexual tension, on the other the movie on its own leaves watchers to wonder whether the characters had any romantic feelings towards each other or not. And I probably stumbled upon a comment on YouTube, which interpreted the "You don't have to do this" line more as "You're so pretty, why do you have to be evil?" (or something along these lines)
Also I think that clarification would make Lisa a more nuanced character (by the fact that she tries to manipulate a villain into giving up on his villainy).
Also, as you may have noticed, the scar was meant to be on her neck, makes sence, given her backstory (He held a knife to my throat). I guess they moved it down just so Rippner wouldn't notice it earlier (though the script also mentions, that Lisa was meant to wear a sweater). I, personally, on the back of my horny mind, think he wasn't looking for scar when he gazed on her breast ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
A little note: Script-Lisa looks away saying "No" while Rachel looks straight into his eyes, but starts trembling instead.
By the way, Rippner wasn't meant to slam and choke her just yet.
Tumblr media
I guess he just let her out to wipe out the messege. Here Lisa gives up on conving him.
Tumblr media
Only after he finished wiping he starts to choke her. Also, pay CLOSE ATTENTION on what Rippner's lips do here ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Yep, he almost kisses her.
I guess the changes movie made here were for the sake of pacing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another important difference: Rippner fixes both their outlooks to be more presentable. Lisa protests a bit.
I guess the movie crew decided they don't need to fix their look that much.
Also, I prefer the movie's "Peachy" instead of just "Good", though both lines are in the movie lol.
On the final note, I guess "Thanks for the quickie" line makes a bit more sence given we have Rippner's crawling lips there ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).
So, these were the differences of the lavatory scene between the script and the movie. Hope you had as much shipping excitement as I did.
P.S: The link to the script. If you're a fan I strongly suggest to download it, it may easily become a lost media, like an earlier draft.
scream (1996) is, of course, right up my alley. the film is directed by horror veteran wes craven and is from a technical perspective beautifully done, with gorgeously composed shots, well-conceived setpieces, excellent sets, and very good acting. on its own technical merit it deserves to be lauded as a notable and praiseworthy slasher film. however, the film also manages something that is easy to attempt and difficult to carry off: make a genre-aware horror-comedy film where the horror is still sincerely effective all the way to the end. i credit this careful balance to craven’s long experience with the slasher genre, allowing him to carefully control tone and audience attention, and the script’s keen awareness what genre deviances are expected and what retention of tropes can be forgiven. the characters’ obsession with following the tropes of horror movies to callously guess who the killer is, a desire framed as nihilistic and perverted and paralleled by the voyeuristic true-crime sensibilities of the tabloid journalist character and her devotees, makes the audience aware of their own attempts to do the same and causes them to doubt their own suspicions. of course, these film references are also just a lot of fun to people who enjoy the genre, and the ending both fulfills and expands on the expectations of the genre in a way that made the story feel complete and well-merited. i would also like to do some work with the ghostface costume as a physical object, but i suspect i would be better served putting that off until i have seen more of the films, so for now i will just say that scream (1996) strikes a very difficult balance in the horror genre, and the resulting product is both highly effective and deeply enjoyable
Sex in Horror Media and is it needed? The whys, why nots, and some examples
Tumblr media
So, the talk. Sex in horror. Why it’s needed or not needed, is it necessary, and what are the kinds? Let’s talk about it and let me explain.
Now the easiest way to start this out is by talking about the kinds of sex in horror media. The first is the laziest and most obvious. Eye candy, to those who enjoy that sort of thing and don’t find it very discomforting, to a very poorly made or boring movie…or it could be even placed in a good movie, but is overall pointless and serves no purpose. The second kind of purposeful sex. It serves a purpose to tell or support the story. An example of the first could be Friday the 13th 2009. The first sex scene in the movie is kind of to show…. I’m not sure actually. Just to be there or to pad time. And the second, near the end, could be to…show the boyfriend is shitty…which if you couldn’t tell that by the first 10 or so minutes of the film then…I guess this serves a purpose for you, but overall, it’s pretty unnecessary.
Now to move onto the second, which is purposeful sex scenes in horror media. Examples of this are David Cronenberg’s Scanners from 1976. The disease in that movie makes people sexually crazed, which, through sexual intercourse, pass the disease from one another. It was also made during the sexual revolution and to comment on people’s fear of sex and intercourse with people you weren’t married to, which was a crazy concept during those times. Now with that…it serves many purposes. To show how a disease transfers and comments on the times it was in, through creative means, and also satirizing the concept of sex without marriage, and using sex without marriage as the disease, since you’d have to be so crazed and diseased to do that out of wedlock. All of it serves a purpose to the story, metaphors, interpretation, etc.
Now I could go on and on for hours about examples, but I feel it’s also important to touch on the fact that, yes…sex in horror media is a staple of the genre. It’s iconic in the genre. So much so that it’s famously mentioned in Wes Craven’s 1996 classic Scream as a trope. So, in the end….is it pointless…sometimes yes, but can it serve a purpose? Yes. Should it be removed? I personally don’t know. I’d say no because it’s a staple of the genre, and can create interesting stories IF used right, and for purpose/metaphors, but then again…I don’t know.
Also, I’ll throw out some more examples of necessary sex in horror. Anything vampire-related. Sex in vampire movies have always had many reasons for being necessary. All the way from homosexuality and lesbian representation, especially back in the day when it was “taboo”, to certain interesting interpretations of the subgenre of vampire horror like why women love vampires, which was famously theorized in Ed Wood, as mentioned by Eli Roth’s history of horror podcast, because vampires aren’t disgusted by the menstrual cycle, unlike a human/mortal man, who may feel disgusted. Another example is John Landis’s An American Werewolf in London from 1981 which showcases David becoming more animalistic and more like a werewolf.
Also, another purpose I nearly forgot to talk about is another purpose for sex in horror media…cool kills!? Yep. Friday the 13th has many, Shivers, and so many more.
Again, I could go on for hours, but I’ll end it now. What are your thoughts? Do you feel sex should stay in horror? If so, why? If not, why? What are some good examples of sex being used well in a horror movie or series? And bad examples. And yeah, what are your thoughts?
Scream 2 (1997)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At one point, several of the characters in Scream 2 discuss sequels. Specifically how infrequently they measure up to the originals. If this were a bad movie, it would remind the audience of countless other - better - movies you could be watching instead but Scream 2 knows the ins and outs of sequels. It came into the arena prepared. This a great follow-up, combining elements of whodunit slasher, comedy and satire in a way that makes its intelligence clear.
Tumblr media
Set some time after the events of the first movie, the tragedy of Woodsboro has been immortalized by Hollywood. When a copycat killer emerges, Sidney (Neve Campbell) - now studying at Windsor College - finds herself once again targeted by an unknown, masked slasher.
A unique aspect of the Scream series is that it cares about its characters. While there are a few exceptions, such as Nancy from Nightmare on Elm Street, most of the humans we see in the horror films that inspired Scream 2 are there to be slaughtered. Jason, Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Chucky are the “heroes”; the ones who come back over and over. This movie is different. We know Officer Dewey (David Arquette), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) well by now. They may be side characters but we want them to live. Their stories continue from where they left off, with a romance developing between Dewey and Gale, the already-capable Sidney cutting the crank-callers she gets at the knees, and poor Randy still left on the sidelines while obsessing about film. Automatically, you’re invested in this story.
In a move I don’t think I’ve ever seen before, we see that within the universe of Scream, there is a movie based on the massacre in Woodsboro called Stab. We see a few scenes - re-enactments of some from Scream. We see a crowd cheering when Ghostface appears. For me, this was a moment to pause. This was the movie that Scream and its sequel could've been; sleazy, blood-dripped fun. It's what the audience within the movie is getting - until the killer strikes. Suddenly, they all get a dose of reality.
Come to think of it, we assume it’s the Ghostface we see stalking Maureen (Jada Pinkett) that eventually goes on to torment Sidney… but what if it wasn’t? What if some sicko just took a place where everyone would be wearing masks, screaming, and used it to get away with murder? What if more than one person was sick enough in the head to kill? This ambiguity is definitely intentional. A sub-theme of “Scream 2” is whether movies can influence people to commit violent crimes. The person (or persons, there were two in the first film after all) after Sidney have been inspired by Stu Macher and Billy Loomis - real people in their world. Without Stab, would the masks be as readily available? Would the crime be as publicized? Is Stab partially to blame? This idea comes back strongly towards the end but you know we can’t discuss that here. Although I will say that even if you know the ending, the movie has great re-watch value. It’s a lot of fun to see how all the puzzle pieces fit together and how the film follows some conventions but subverts others.
Writer Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven bring plenty of suspense along with the comedic scenes. It’s a nice balance that keeps you guessing. When you get comfortable, it pours on the gore to knock you off your feet. There are so many great scenes sprinkled throughout so let's list a few of them. There’s the one where Gail and Dewey are scouring the campus to track down who is calling Randy, the opener, Sarah Michelle Gellar's small part, Ghostface’s reveal (a blueprint for how to do one of those “I can’t believe I didn’t see it coming ending), the Stab scenes (a riot), that discussion in the film studies class, and a particularly effective moment in which Sidney is stalked by Ghostface in the middle of a play rehearsal (it might be the best scene in the movie). Oh, how could I forget Liev Schreiber as Cotton Weary? He only had a cameo in the first movie and the way he plays into this follow-up is terrific.
Tumblr media
There’s a lot to love in Scream 2. On the one hand, it’s a surprise lightning could strike twice but on the other, it’s only natural that a movie franchise that knows this much about movie franchises should be able to pull this off as well as it does. (On Blu-ray, January 23, 2022)
What I watched this week (3/6-3/12 '23)
Perfect Blue (1997, dir. Satoshi Kon)
Tumblr media
I'm not saying anything new when I say I loved what a mindfuck this movie is. Truly a masterpiece in keeping you glued to the narrative and second guessing your own interpretation of the film.
It's really hard to talk about this movie without getting into really big spoiler territory but I'll do my best to describe why this film is such a masterpiece. Beyond the striking visuals and the intense score, Perfect Blue tackles the psyche of fame in a way I've never seen done before. It gets it so perfect, from the jealousy, the self loathing, to the wide variety of opinions of the public it paints a compelling picture of how fame literally, and figuratively traps one in it's web. Much like Mima, I constantly found myself backtracking and second guessing the films narrative, and ultimately the payoff left me with just the right amount of unanswered questions. I can't wait to re-watch and pick up on anything I may have missed.
5/5
Fallen Angels (1995, dir. Wong Kar-wai)
Tumblr media
This!!! movie!!! is!!! so!!! sweet!!!! It's a movie about weirdos falling in love made for weirdos. The plot is just a loose thread that holds this bundle of joy and light against the grimey city underbelly together in the bestest of ways. This movie is ultimately about its characters, and for having so many different arcs going on all it once, it manages to give each one the right ammount of time to shine and grab onto my mind enough to leave a mark.
The theme of love and lonlieness permeates and saturates this film through the dark, intimate aesthetics and the bloody over the top gunfights and it makes it something special - and one of my favroites.
5/5
Escape From New York (1981, dir. John Carpenter)
Tumblr media
Watching this movie as a metal gear solid fan is a trip, and probably contributed to 90% of my enjoyment of it. I know I know everyone has said it, "Snake plisken! snake plisken!" but there's more to it than that. The pacing, the plot structure, the elements of sci-fi all of it was used as a base in MGS and it's so cool to see it in it's original form!
Metal Gear references aside, Escape from New York is a solid sci fi action flick with good (albeit silly) worldbuilding and a solid, likeable cast of characters. I thought the movie lagged a little bit, but it made up for it in every other aspect - especially in it's action scenes.
4/5
Scream 3 + 4 (2000, 2011, dir. Wes Craven)
Tumblr media
Oh scream, why does everyone love you? Honestly, am I just missing something with these movies? Is there some secret piece of knwoeldge I've glossed over? Or are people just stupid. I don't know. These movies are painfully boring and uninteresting people! The twists aren't fun, the gore is boring, the satire is blunt, and oh my god are the characters ever awful!
Look, I understand that looking for good characters in a Slasher is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, I understand that! But I'd forgive this movie if it didn't spend so much fucking time on them! I do not care about Sidney prescott. I do not care about Gale Weathers. I do not care about Dewey Riley. They are all fine as plot devices to keep the kills coming, but as these movies go on and on they become more and more about these people who I simply do not care about.
Scream 3: 1.5/5
Scream 4: 2/5
Scream + Scream 6 (2022, 20223 dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett)
Tumblr media
Sadly, new directors couldn't fix this movie. They continue to perpetuate every flaw of the Craven films, and somehow manage to make them worse. The characters are just as flat, the movie is still way to long, and despite all the talk of "requels" , "elevated horror" and "reboots'' the satire continues to feel dated and overall blunt. I'm sorry, Scream franchise but saying something is a trope then doing it is neither funny or good satire.
I also personally find these two insulting as they try to knock sigh "whiney snowflake nerds with letterboxed" accounts down a peg for not enjoying.... shallow cashgrab franchise shlock? very strange angle for a satire to take but alright I guess. Also this film trys to tackle social media and. Just fails so horribly on it. At least 6 finally had some good kills.
Scream (2022): 0.5/5
Scream 6: 2/5
Better Call Saul S6 (2022, shrn.  Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould.)
Tumblr media
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. That is my emotions on the end of this show. OH MY GOD what a ride this series has been, did you know I actually started it to get some inspiration for a long abandonded fanfiction? because I did. And GOD am I ever glad I did because the payoff, the journey was incredible. I haven't been this nethralled by a TV show in perhaps ever. I was on the edge of my seat for the entirtiy of season 6, just waiting to see how it would all come crashing down and MY GOD did it ever.
It is so hard for me to be and speak normally about this show, in fact I don't think I could even if I tried so I'm just going to leave it at that. Until next week folks!
you found the right book but I'm stuck on the fact that you rewatched scream back to back OMG WHATS YOUR FAVORITE!! I love love love scream, I live and breathe that first movie 😭 my next favs in the series are 4 and 3 (controversial i know i know but its funny i cant help it). And I love Wes craven as a director too which is funny because I used to curse his name cause I hated horror movies and was terrified of them, specifically freddy omg until one time I just sat down, put nightmare on elm street 1 on my laptop and was like wait I'm actually entertained 🤣 so ever since then I guess I've been in my horror phase for like 5+ years now but I'm not only a horror watcher, I love me a good romance drama or romcom too (I will take this time to confess I too was a vampire diaries watcher 😭, can't say i was an avid fan but i definitely dabbled in it🤧 however i commend you for the greys anatomy that show is like on season 100) & I totally agree with you on the negativity! like I don't care about anything else being said lol if i enjoyed the movie it's an automatic 5 stars golden globe academy award winner 🤣🤣🤣 I feel like I'm spamming you with all these asks tho 😬😅 - 🧃
I can't choose a favorite of those four because I love the story as a whole. Well, I do hold the first one a little closer to my heart because watching Scream with my mom and my older brother is pretty much the first memory I have of life so I've loved it about that long lol.
Horror is a great phase to have haha although I will say, I enjoy that time in horror than I do of the horror films now. They're either too much or too cheesy nowadays, which I feel bad about saying but I like being entertained and scared, not disturbed. And cheesiness is best for romcoms, not horror hahaha
I also love dramatic romances (clearly haha) and especially romcoms!! I wish I could write a great romcom but I excel more in long dramatic monologues than I do at jokes and all of the tropes that are consistent with the genre. But I am a HUGE romantic. I love all of the feels.
Hahah I feel like if you like Scream, you cannot avoid The Vampire Diaries since the creator and screenwriter for Scream also wrote for the show.
I feel the same way about the "it's an automatic 5 stars golden globe academy award winner" part because when I love something I love it with every fiber in my being.
Don't worry about it, you're not spamming me. I'm enjoying the chats. Besides, my replies aren't exactly short hahah. I'm not replying out of obligation. I enjoy it!
Shocker (1989)
A disappointing offering from Wes Craven. It's largely presented as a movie about an executed murderer carrying out revenge by moving through electrical wiring and devices. However, the overall story and mythology just end up very messy. The actual execution doesn't occur until a third of the way into the film, and prior to that it's a movie about a football player with a strange psychic connection to a murderer, and even then the mythology is weird and inconsistent. Then it becomes about the killer jumping between different people's bodies, but I guess that got boring because then it just goes into wacky things like the killer possessing a chair and a climactic battle while running through different TV shows. Overall it's just kinda weird, but not weird enough for that to be the selling point.
Wolf like me (you think of a better title)
July 14th, 2009
Unless you have been living under a proverbial rock you will be aware that SFX released a vampire special this month and although it is a tad pricey, it’s worth getting your mits on for the Buffy mouse pads and very long and detailed interview with James Marsters. James a.k.a Spike was voted the number one vampire by the good readers of the magazine, which is a fair assesment. The top ten seemed pretty spot on if it wasn’t for Selena from Underworld being in there, but the commentry on her was “I SO WOULD PHWWWOAR” rather then a intricate reflection of her fanged antics… at least Robert Pattison’s placing in the top 50 had the pull out quote “When you read the book it’s like “Edward Cullen was so beautiful I creamed myself”"
In honour of this I have made a Top Ten Six Werewolf list
6. Professor Lupin: Isn’t it weird that his last name is a deviation of the latin word for wolf like AND he is a wolf?! It’s like those people whose last names are Pratt and they are pratts! Oh Miss Rowling, your subtlety never fails to amaze me…
Tumblr media
5. The cast of Dog Soldiers: This British horror film is a favorite of myself and Ollie’s, and the name summarizes the film better then I ever could… It’s mindless, stupid, entertaining, and better then Severance so bonus.
4. Joanie in Cursed: This film directed by Wes Craven is a thinly veiled lesson in safe sex, with the werewolfness being spread by Joshua Jackson’s unprotected penis. Myself and Alek saw it in the cinema and felt the line uttered by the character Joanie “I guess there is no such thing as safesex with a werewolf” was wonderful. Plus it’s the only film I have seen with a werewolf giving Christina Ricci the middle finger.
3. Michael Sheen in the Underworld trilogy: Technically he is only in one and two, but because he can act proper and that he manages to make the films half decent. Plus this film is about the forbidden love between a vampire and a werewolf which we have all pondered over and contains a particularly impressive sex scene over the edge of a cliff.
Tumblr media
2. OZ! When I was younger I really liked Seth Green and all I wanted in my life was a small ginger boy with black nail varnish who played guitar to sweep me off my feet, I was what you might call “emo” and “living in a fantasy world of my own creation.” Anyway, due to this affliction I was rather invested in his and Willow’s love.
Tumblr media
I was impressed with how they dealt with him being a wolf and Willows little fling with Xander and I cried my little heart out when that EVIL SLUT Veruca teased him away with her werelady charms.
1. Brigette and Ginger in Ginger Snaps: This film is about two nerdy death obsessed sisters and is a thinly veiled (aren’t they all!) metaphor for going through fun puberty, where one of them literally gets “The Curse” but thinks it is just her hormones or a really bad period rather then because a werewolf bit her. It’s a good twist on the werewolf genre, and is maybe like Heathers but with Wereladies.
Tumblr media
(Oh and the second one is set in Pagan times, and isn’t very good.)
p.s I went to see the first ever screening of the new Harry Potter film last friday in London and Simon Mayo was there, but sadly no Mark Kemode. However, I will give a little review of it after the premiere on Tuesday as well as covering myself with the free Harry Potter transfer tattoos I got.
THE 2022 AARONS - Best Film
75 films released in 2022 are eligible for this year’s ceremony. That ties a low with the pandemic year of 2020, but my goal was to focus on quality over quantity. Well, at least that’s what I told myself until I opted to watch Disenchanted over Decision to Leave. I did watch a lot of good films last year though. Here are the Aarons for Best Film:
Tumblr media
#10. Scream
Tumblr media
Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett were the first people brave enough to take a stab at Scream since the passing of director Wes Craven. They slayed at becoming its stewards. The fifth film’s satire has bigger prey in mind than just the slasher subgenre, cutting through a whole culture obsessed with reliving an idealized past. It’s a scary, and pertinent, reminder of how easily infantilized fan-bases can be weaponized against human beings, told with a sly style that would have made Craven proud. While the film features plenty of familiar faces and Ghostfaces, it’s the new blood of current and soon-to-be horror icons like Dylan Minnette and Jenny Ortega that really made the horror-comedy a scream.
Tumblr media
#9. The Black Phone
Tumblr media
Based on the short story by Joe Hill, The Black Phone recalls the best works of his father Stephen King. The 70s-set serial killer thriller grabs ahold of viewers with its supernatural hook - a phone that converses with the dead - but it’s the clever characters that will keep them captivated. Sinister director Scott Derickson slowly dials up the dread as young Finny Blake tries to escape the clutches of his kidnapper, with the looming specter of past victims making the cost of failure clear. The frightening film’s secret weapon is its resourcefulness, deftly deploying Ethan Hawke’s maniacal villain and eerie 8mm imagery as it lays the groundwork for an off-the-hook finale.
Tumblr media
#8. The Batman
Tumblr media
Since its debut, every comic book filmmaker has been riddled by the same dilemma: how to eclipse The Dark Knight. If director Matt Reeves, who sharpened his skill for thoughtful blockbusters on Planet of the Apes, didn’t solve the question, he at least gave a very good guess. Reeve’s reinvention pushed the envelope of superhero cinema by drawing inspiration from David Fincher, distinguishing itself in the competitive genre through grounded stakes and great spectacle. Abetted by Paul Dano’s riveting Riddler and Robert Pattison’s arresting, arrestedly-developed version of the vigilante, the twists and turns of the mystery noir keep viewers tightly-wound even after its dam breaks open.
Tumblr media
#7. TÁR
Tumblr media
TÁR’s composition is unusual: it begins with a full set of production credits, shown in reverse of traditional order. The switch-up is the opening salvo of a film fully intent on upsetting power dynamics. The three-hour character piece plays with audiences’ sympathies as it chronicles the collapse of famous (fictional) symphony composer Lydia Tár. The nuanced tale of narcissism takes some cues from modern day ‘cancel culture,” but the tenor is a tragedy as classical as they come. To alleviate trepidation, it’s important to note that TÁR isn’t as stuffy as it may sound: the coda of this unusual composition is a rollicking punchline as appropriate as it is unpredictable.
Tumblr media
#6. Pearl
Tumblr media
Pearl is a gem. Filmed in secret alongside its predecessor (more on that shortly) and released a few months later, the prequel extrapolates X into a compelling study of its eponymous character. The wickedness of the Oz-inspired technicolor terror contrasts itself through its singular focus. Tracing the lead-up to Pearl’s first string of murders in 1918 as her fairy tale dreams turn into a deranged fervor, the film keeps the body count going but the spotlight fixed on the incontestable star power of Mia Goth. Goth’s devotion to the demented ending guarantees that, while X is extricating, Pearl will always linger in the back of one’s mind.
Tumblr media
#5. X
Tumblr media
‘Elevated horror,’ the designation given to the recent trend of arthouse films, has routinely struggled to find the right balance between lofty thematic ambitions and expected genre titillation. X marks the spot. The trick was in fixating both on being unabashed about one’s nature. The thrust of Ti West’s throwback grindhouse flick, which documents a group of sexually-liberated filmmakers’ fateful encounter with an envious elderly couple, is a morality play about accepting mortality. The sexed-up slasher doesn’t skimp on penetrating flesh though, with gnarly gore effects designed by Wētā Workshop. It could have been objectifying and objectionable material, but West directs it all with a curious compassion; as a result, X multiplied wins for his films this year.
Tumblr media
#4. The Banshees of Inisherin
Tumblr media
Banshees is a lament of ghosting gone wrong. Martin McDonagh’s drama escalates an unconscientious uncoupling - truthful but tactless - between two life-long best friends to its most absurd and absurdly funny degree. Backdropped by the Irish Civil War, the boiling tension between the curiously incongruous but synchronously stubborn pairing of Brendan Gleeson’s ambitious Colm and Colin Farrell’s simplistic Pádraic highlights how quickly spite can erode one’s better angels. It’s a downbeat design yet Inisherin’s spirit lies in its impeccably witty dialogue. They may not be able to put their finger on whether it’s gaiety or grief, but audiences will be howling in response to Banshees for one reason or the other.
Tumblr media
#3. Speak No Evil
Tumblr media
Much has been said recently about horror’s use as a vehicle to process past trauma; Speak No Evil returns the conversation to the genre’s custom of cautionary tales. Danger lies ahead, not behind, of the film’s family when they accept an invitation to an idyllic weekend stay with a foreign couple. Evil preys on the unprepared; the insidious nature of its terror isn’t clear until its trap is already sprung. For the unassertive, the Danish film is uniquely devastating. The less said to prospective viewers, the better, though rest assured that Speak No Evil deserves every good word.
Tumblr media
#2. The Fabelmans
Tumblr media
Steven Spielberg has spent a lifetime doing his dream work and capturing his audiences’ imagination along the way. Loosely based on his own childhood, The Fablemans brings that wide-ranging filmography into focus. The assortment of anecdotes is one of the director’s funniest films and undoubtedly his most vulnerable. While this semi-autobiographical story could have been a simple victory lap for the septuagenarian, Spielberg’s sentimentality has always been far wiser than critics claim. The sure to be sacred text to future generations of filmmakers is certainly a testament to the magic of movies. Yet, even as Spielberg reframes his past, the learned moral imparted by The Fabelmans is really about what cinema is unable to control.
Tumblr media
AND THE BEST FILM OF 2022 IS...
#1. Everything Everywhere All At Once
Tumblr media
Movie multiverses may be inescapable at the moment, but no project encapsulates the concept’s infinite possibilities more than Everything Everywhere All at Once. The revolutionary martial-arts flick runs like The Matrix trading its estrogen for ecstasy as it awakens an under-audit laundromat owner to the larger worlds around her. The film’s directors, collectively credited as Daniels, learned the tools of the trade on the offbeat Swiss Army Man and apply that same sense of humor here: one that’s lewd, ludicrous, and incredibly life affirming.  Able to transform a universe of humans with hot dogs for fingers from joke to tearjerker and back again, the film is continually unexpected but everything one’s ever wanted all at once.
New York, New Rules: Scream VI Review
Tumblr media
Pictured above is the “Scream VI” poster.
Image credit: Paramount Pictures and SPYGLASS Media Group
One year ago, Scream (2022) slashed its way into theaters, and it received critical acclaim while being a box office hit making $138.9 million at the box office. It was a beautiful tribute to series creator Wes Craven and as I said in my Scream (2022) review, I almost teared up. So, lets just cut to the chase and go straight into my spoiler free thoughts on this latest entry into the “Scream” franchise.
Scream VI is a 2023 slasher horror film directed by the Radio Silence team consisting of Matt-Bettinelli Olpin and Tyler Gillet. Scream VI is produced by Kevin Williamson, Courteney Cox, and Gary Barber. The cast involves Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter, Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin, Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis, and Roger Jackson as “The Voice”.
The Plot:
Four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City. However, they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when a new killer embarks on a bloody rampage.
Positives:
One positive I have about Scream VI was how sadistic Ghostface was, this version of Ghostface wanted to take out the characters by any means necessary. The thought of not knowing who the killer in a massive city such as New York is terrifying. The chase scenes were thrilling, the kills were brutal, and the dialogue Ghostface gets gave me chills.
Tumblr media
Pictured above is Ghostface with a shotgun in the already iconic bodega scene.
Image Credit: Paramount Pictures and SPYGLASS Media Group
The second positive I have was how well the characters were done, each character was likeable, and they built up the suspense factor because you had no idea who lives or dies. I also appreciated how they subverted your expectations in this movie. I’m glad that the killer reveal wasn’t as obvious as other movies.
Tumblr media
Pictured above is Sam and Tara Carpenter hiding from Ghostface.
The final positive I have about this movie was the performances of each cast member. Each character’s dialogue felt organic and natural. The characters were as I said likeable, and I felt so sad after a certain character died. The characters left a mark in their own way in my opinion.
Tumblr media
Negatives:
The only negative I can think of is that some scenes went by a little quick and I couldn’t process what was happening. Other than that, I think this might be one of the better horror movies to come out earlier this year (Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed them, but not as much as this). Well, I guess this is just a knit pick, I felt like some of the main characters were invincible regardless if they were stabbed multiple times.
My overall thoughts:
After watching Scream VI, I would like to see more of this world and hopefully we get a Scream VII after Hollywood sorts out whatever is going on. This movie delivered on its scares, thrills, and chills the “Scream” franchise is known for.
Where to watch Scream VI?
𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒎 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏: Four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City. However, they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when a new killer embarks on a bloody rampage.
𝑴𝒚 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔: HOLY SHIT WAS THIS A JUMP FROM 5. Most of my issues with Scream 5 were that killers were entirely to easy to guess, however in this one the only person I truly clocked was Ethan and I found myself second guessing that choice the whole film. I was shocked to see there was no return of Sidney but I do imagine the franchise is moving on in Tara and Sam's direction instead.
The return of the old masks and the collection room was insane. I was shocked when Sam actually put on her father's costume, she had me worried we'd already seen her as the next future Ghost Face. The train sequence with all the Ghost Faces was also incredibly brilliant in that true "The killer could be anyone" motto that this franchise thrives on.
I was glad to see a reappearance from the ever beloved Kirby again but I'll admit I was on the edge of my seat when she was being framed as the killer because I did find myself believing it for a moment.
AND CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT GHOSTFACE WITH A S H O T G U N. The killers are already terrifying with knifes, hats off to Tara and Sam because I absolutely would have given up in that bodega.
It feels like they genuinely took the critiques of 5 and fixed them, this new Scream feels more like a true Wes Craven style film and I hope they continue improving on this incredible franchise
𝑶𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝑹𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: 9.5/10 (A requel sequel saga never beats its original)
#19: Cursed (2005)
Tumblr media
Cursed (the Wes Craven werewolf movie) is a solidly entertaining but overall pretty mediocre movie. Apparently this film was stuck in production hell for many years and was heavily reshot and edited down. This has earned the film a bad reputation, which I don’t think is wholly deserved. This is no Scream, but in the sea of mediocre to terrible werewolf movies, this one has plenty to offer.
In this movie, two siblings (played by Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg) get attacked by a werewolf and have to find a way to cure the curse before they fully turn. It’s got some solid werewolf moments as the two slowly transform while navigating their wacky Los Angeles lives. The werewolf costumes are decent. There’s a werewolf dog which is funny. There are a couple plot twists that aren’t great exactly, but at least they tried.
There’s this cool scene early on that’s set in this sorta werewolf movie museum, which I loved. They had some werewolf artifacts like a replica of the silver cane from the original Wolf Man (1941). I watched this movie pretty late in my pilgrimage, so this scene was a real treat.
There were a few things that I disliked about the movie. The pacing feels pretty disjointed, ostensibly because of the production hell. The plot feels like it’s only there to shuttle the characters between the various werewolf scenes. The movie as a whole is too LA-brained for its own good. There’s a lot of agency/acting/production drama going on in the plot which I, as a non-movie-making layperson, found hard to relate with. Like there’s this whole “ya can’t trust blondes in Hollywood, amirite?” gag they do at one point that just left me more confused than anything else.
Also there’s this pretty dubious (read: Bad) gay representation that I wanna get into. Jesse Eisenburg’s character is a dorky highschooler (because of course he is) who gets bullied by the captain of the wrestling team. The bully is constantly calling him fag and shit (because of course he is) until Jesse gets partially werewolfed and stands up for himself, outwrestling the bully and telling him that he’s probably gay and represed. We love an evil repressed gay (we don’t). After this there’s a painfully awkward scene where the bully admits to being gay and tags along for the rest of the werewolf adventure. I have a lot to dislike about this, but after this scene, the bully becomes genuinely likable and the best character in the movie. This is still not good representation, but it’s surprising for a mainstream movie from 2005 to have a queer character who is (1) not evil and (2) survives till the end. So I guess I’ll call it net neutral /shrug.
Overall, I’d somewhat recommend this movie. If you like cliche werewolf movies and have an affinity for 2000s era LA (for whatever reason) you’ll probably like it a lot. This one’s far from my favorite but I had a good time. The absolute best part of this movie, though, is that it’s the source of this gif.
