I had to sit through the newest home alone movie with my little cousins and now you must know my pain
It's very apparent that the people making this movie do not understand what made the original work
The big point is the new one makes the burglars way too sympathetic and the kid too much of a brat
It's like the writers didn't watch the original, only knowing of it via a skim of the Wikipedia page and from those stupid "Kevin is a psychopath who tortured people" takes
What makes Kevin work is he's just a little kid, on his own, and out of his depth, put down and mistreated by others, he's an underdog, you want him to succeed, to overcome his stronger more numerous enemies and prove his doubters wrong
Conversely, the reason the abuse heaped on the Wet Bandits is funny and never feels undeserved is that they are genuinely DESPICABLE! 1. They're robbing people on Christmas, 2. They're ruining the houses they hit by flooding them, 3. They're greedy, there's no sympathetic reason behind their crimes, they're stealing for the purpose of having more, 4. They're given more than enough chances to walk away, 5. They're pretty eager to terrorize Kevin-a little kid! And 6. They flip to wanting to maim or murder Kevin pretty damn quickly
But the new one?
The "bandits" are not at all malicious in any way, their motives are completely sympathetic, nothing that they get feels deserved in the slightest
And the kid...
A Rich brat, smart-ass know it all, STEALS A TOY FROM A CHARITY!?
