billy should have been an experiment from the same lab as El and that’s why they moved to hawkins of all places. billy doesn’t remember the lab, the further and longer he was away from the lab the less he remembered. his mother broke him out of the lab but she was caught by the government (why she left him) and he was handed over to neil. once the lab was up and running again they gave neil money to bring billy back to hawkins to see if his powers worked again. s2 should have had him wondering why things felt familiar, why he felt different. by the time he has to go find max he’s still confused, still annoyed, pent up anger and maybe he finds her earlier so when the demodogs start attacking the house, he’s there and he freaks out and accidentally uses his powers. bam. story done.

it's pretty wild to me that people don't see that aang running off to save katara in CoD is his luke in empire strikes back moment, where he runs headlong into his want and attachment and he's narratively punished for doing so and not learning his lesson - aang runs after katara despite guru pathik's warning, like luke runs after leia and han from yoda on dagobah despite yoda's warning; similarly, as a result, things go to hell in ba sing se like they do on bespin - aang enters the avatar state before he's ready and gets killed, and ba sing se falls to the fire nation, luke fights vader before he's ready, loses a hand, and symbolically commits suicide after vader tells him he's luke's father.

the difference between their character arcs is that george lucas and co. actually went thru with luke's hero's journey and understood the fundamental difference between attachment and love, whereas I don't think bryke understood this difference and then dropped this from aang's arc pretty much completely and replaced it with aang digging in his heels into his want and attachment and he gets rewarded with energy bending from a lion turtle, the avatar state from a random pointy rock, and his forever girl from the self-indulgent white men that couldn't bring themselves to give their hero a compelling character arc that meant he might not have gotten everything he wanted at the end.

what gets me about the shadow/maria dynamic is that it takes the trope of "weak helpless girl dies for a tragic plot device" and subverts it

Maria wasn't helpless in her fate. She did have a choice. Shadow would have been strong enough to protect them both (Where else could they even go? Would he need to hurt someone?) but instead she made a choice to protect Shadow.

Shadow's story isn't tragic because he failed to protect Maria and now spends the rest of his life tormented over it. Shadow's story is tragic because he is the strongest creature alive, but raw power isn't always enough, and his loving friend made a sacrifice to let him go hoping she was giving him a chance to learn compassion because she was strong!

Maria's purpose isn't that she's a weak little girl who dies. Maria's legacy is that she protects the strongest creature alive, and teaches it the strength of love.

Her character gives the moment purpose, not the other way around. Her willingness to die so he can go free, asking him to use his strength to protect the people of Earth, despite everything. It's her proof of love that gives Shadow's burden that kind of extreme weight. Shadow will live forever and with so much limitless power, would life be easy to discard without a second thought? Not Maria's. Not when she asked him to protect it. That weight will remind him, always.

art isnt working well atm but i tried to doodle a rough possible redesign for an old OC, she used to have a name but i think im just gonna call her "The Captain" from now on

she leads a group of pirates that frequently rescues/frees demons that had been captured by hunters, she and the co-founder (Ki'ita) of the group also invented a form of solar powered sailboat that lets them carry out missions noone else can

she has an adult daughter whos in charge of the diver specialists while the captain herself and Ki'ita are the main agressors when a mission calls for the sinking of ships or similar ... that is if Ki'ita is around, which she usually isnt bc she mainly does solo missions in arctic waters and can be gone for months, returning only for a big feast and information exchange/replanning, leaving again after 1 or 2 days, so the captain does most of the visible work

the captain isnt fond of Ki'ita being so absent but also knows how important her work is, the two are rather close but only show so in private

Kaeya had always been an efficient and hard-working individual (he had to be to support Diluc in the background as his brother rose thru the ranks after all).

He has so much free time because he completes all his work way ahead of schedule. And if he still has enough time, he adds more to the workload in secret.

And once all of that was done and over with, he makes time for everyone. He has to. He feels as if every moment has to be given to someone else.

No one knows how he does it. No one has to know.

Every mission has a dozen strategies in line, and every battle plan is made with efficiency in mind. His perfect record will not be tarnished. He can't risk it (even if it baffles others that he would willingly activate a ruin guard just to prevent a failed mission. Jean disagrees with his methods, but Kaeya can say that the results say otherwise)

He needs to be quick.

Efficient.

Perfect.

And so he comes and goes like the wind.

Kaeya values time because he knew every second counted. He can't just stand there as if he were frozen. Time could run out in an instant.

Kaeya had only been late once his entire life.

He'd rather he never be late ever again.

It took one day of being of being imperfect for everything to fall apart. On that tragic day...had he gotten there on time... then maybe...

Kaeya snorts, but acquiesces, hiding the shaking of his hands at the thought of being idle.

He imagines hearing a clock ticking.

Kaeya knows that that is his own problem. He tries his hardest to relax as he waits for the traveler to finish whatever they're making on the alchemy table because, seriously, it is supposed to be a relaxing day. There's nothing major going on, and his schedule is once again empty as intended. What's the hurry?

Kaeya taps his foot on the ground as he waits. He wishes he could take his own damn advice when he tells others to relax.

Like we know the camp knows they went through the worst part of literal hell, so why not milk it? I want to see Katie run up to them in tears and tackle the two in a hug since she's overjoyed that they're alive. I want to see Clarisse punch them in the shoulders for scaring her half to death. I want the Stolls to greet them with a mini-prank before breaking out into laughter and hugging them. I want this to all happen at the same time and to see them just be happy that their friends, who are basically their family, are alive. I want them to laugh, cry, and hug; I want all of it. If we get this far into the series, this is my formal request for us to see this happen. Thank you.
