As a part of my Birthday Prompt Party, Back-up plan is dedicated to the wonderful @llynnfics who has requested #15 „Are you SURE I can’t punch him in the face?” “Yes” “What if I break his nose a little?” with her boy Dowoon. 😉 I hope you like it, dear! 💖
Words: 2031
Setting: fake boyfriend AU, wedding AU
Genre: fluff, comedy, slice of life
Pairing: Yoon Dowoon x reader
When it came to dating, you would bet all your acquisitions that you were the unluckiest girl on the planet. Like seriously.
Not only you never had a boyfriend before but your parents were already hinting that they wanted to have grandchildren soon. It would be okay if you weren’t 22 years old and the eldest child in the family. You had three younger sisters who didn’t have any luck in love either but they were still younger, so they had a reason to be single.
Sometimes it even crossed your mind that the inability to attract boys ran in your family but then you always remembered that guys turned around when they caught sight of your sisters and they were sending them flirting messages but your sisters knew that those frivolous boys wouldn’t be that so-called one for them. At least they had a little experience with dating not like you who had never talked with a guy for more than an hour – if it hadn’t been a male relative of yours, a classmate whom you got for a group project or the boss at the café where you worked.
Small wonder why you started panicking when your best friend – Hyerim − invited you to her wedding. Needless to say, she was getting all excited about the whole event. She was getting get married to her neighbour – that so-called Kang Perfect Younghyun – whom she met when she needed someone to change her light bulbs and as a gentleman as he was, she didn’t need to ask him twice.
You had to admit that Younghyun was really a great guy and undoubtedly suitable for your best friend because he was obviously in love with her, not to mention that he was caring, gentle, polite, loyal and honest. He was good with kids, animals and crazy mothers like Hyerim’s. You had no idea how he could stand Mrs Kim when even you found her a bit too overprotective.
Instead of being genuinely happy for her, you were genuinely shocked and disheartened, but you didn’t want to show it because she was your best friend after all. You wanted nothing more for her than to be happy, that’s why you happened to blurt out that you would be glad to bring a plus one.
“We’ve been together for only a month but I hope it’s not a problem!” You continued on lying, babbling some crazy nonsense that even your genius best friend believed.
“Oh my gosh, why didn’t you tell me?” Hyerim’s eyes widened in surprise but she was already opening her arms to sweep you into a big bear hug. “I’m so happy for you! I’d die to meet him!” She said as she almost crushed your bones, she was hugging you so tightly.
Yeah me too, you though sarcastically, but you just couldn’t bear to tell her the truth. Not even when the day of the wedding was nearing and you still didn’t have a fake boyfriend.
Not until a sudden idea hit you in the elevator of the apartment where you lived, did you find one for real.
You thought that if Hyerim could fall in love with her neighbour, you would maybe have some luck with the guys on the upper floors. You were on the first floor, so you didn’t know a lot about the others but you were so desperate that you decided to give it a try.
As crazy as it sounds, you were bold enough to knock on your neighbours’ door and if it happened to be a male and didn’t have a girlfriend, you told them the truth and after several amused laughs and doors being slapped into your face, there was this raven-haired guy who merely shrugged his shoulders when he heard your question.
“I’m in.” He gave in, not even knowing your real name or the date of the wedding. Your jaw literally dropped upon seeing his reaction.
“Really?” You asked cautiously because you couldn’t tell if he was being serious or merely playing the jokester.
“Yeah, it sounds fun.” He explained without a lot of a detail, his eyes shining with curiosity.
You couldn’t help but squeal a bit when you realised that you finally had someone to bring to the wedding. You imagined Hyerim’s face lightening up at the sight of your (fake) boyfriend because she always complained how the universe must have hated you because you didn’t have a boyfriend when you were literally the sweetest person on Earth. At least, according to her, you were. You weren’t so sure about that after hunting down fake boyfriends in your apartment but she didn’t have to know about this tiny little detail.
“Oh my gosh, you’ve just saved my life! Thank you so much!” You clapped your hands enthusiastically. You were so pumped up that you found yourself hugging him a minute later, not because he was so huggable (it was also true) but because you felt lucky for the first time in 22 years.
“Y-you’re welcome…” The guy with the puppy eyes muttered as you broke out of the hug, leaving both of you feeling embarrassed at the sudden intimacy. You didn’t know what actually hit you but the cute stranger didn’t seem to mind your clinginess either.
After awkwardly introducing yourselves to the other one, exchanging phone numbers just to be sure, and telling him some details of the wedding, he seemed quite enthusiastic about his fake boyfriend role. Of course, you admitted why you needed his help even though it sucked confessing that you didn’t have a single boyfriend in your life.
However, Dowoon wasn’t treating you differently after hearing of your non-existent love life. If anything, he was a real gentleman for saying that you could always tell him if he was a bit too much because he claimed that he wasn’t good at talking with girls. He wanted to give it a try because his flatmate – some guy called Sungjin – was always teasing him that he didn’t move out, let alone have an active dating life, so he could take the opportunity to prove him wrong and put an end to his endless teasing.
Dowoon didn't even have to try, he could make you laugh and smile in such a short spare of time that even you were taken aback by your own behaviour. You were usually awkward and timid when it came to meeting new people, so actually talking to someone – a male on top of that – for more than five minutes without feeling the need to run away, was a big achievement on your part.
You were already excited to see how the wedding would go.
The day had come and you were prepared for anything but to have your heart stolen with only one remark by Dowoon.
"You look really pretty." He complimented as a blush was creeping onto his face, painting his pale skin slightly pink. You were so dumbfounded after hearing his generous words that you had a hard time forming words.
"T-thank you." You stuttered like a nervous high schooler who was about to give an oral presentation in front of the whole class. You didn't even know why his generosity surprised you but it definitely did. The fact that he was wearing black jeans and a black and white shirt didn't help either. He looked so effortlessly handsome. He wasn't too informal but he wasn't overly elegant either. In your opinion, he looked gorgeous.
If you thought that this was it for the day, you would be in for a big surprise because Dowoon had only gotten started. Seriously, the thought actually crossed your mind that it might be a dream because he was being too kind. He was too gentle to be true. He wasn't a very open and talkative person but he was always up for a jolly good chat. He got along well with you from the start thanks to the fact that you were both into books, little independent coffees and puppies.
You learned that he had a dog whom he loved dearly and also an elder sister whom he couldn't see because she stayed in Busan with his family. Now you kind of understood why he was such an excellent companion and why he wasn't too much, not even once – despite not having dozens of girlfriend, he learned how to listen to girls while he was spending most of his time with his sister. He was a bit shy in your opinion but the adorable kind shy, not the awkward one. You actually liked when his ears turned red because it meant that he was really shy. You found it really cute.
Not only he kept you company but he also made sure to cover your legs with his coat when it was getting chilly or filling up your glass when it was empty. He even told a guy off when he wanted to flirt with you.
„Are you SURE I can’t punch him in the face?”
„Yes.” You giggled whole-heartedly. You were seriously amused by his overprotective behaviour.
„What if I break his nose a little?”
„No absolute way.” You laughed it off while deep down his actions really meant a lot to you.
After all, they all spoke for themselves, he was truly a guy just like you dreamed of. You were so in awe that you were sure that your antics would turn both of you in but you somehow managed to make your best friend believe that he was your boyfriend for real. Luckily, you two had already came up with the story of your relationship, of how you met and how long had you been together. You both knew these questions would arise, so you were prepared beforehand. Hyerim even made Dowoon promise that you would all go on a double date – Hyerim bringing Younghyun and you bringing Dowoon.
"You know you really don't have to come to the double date. We'll make up something. Like you are sick or you are visiting relatives." You suggested after bidding your goodbyes at around 1 AM. Dowoon had even asked you to dance while you were both singing some of your favourite songs or merely talking about music. You could talk about anything with him, small wonder why you found it hard to shut your mouth.
"Oh no, it's not a problem." He waved his hands off as he was walking you home – to be precise, walking beside you because you were both heading home. You lived in the same apartment after all.
"You would still want to be my fake boyfriend?" You quirked an eyebrow at him.
"Well..." He started but his voice immediately trailed off. "If you don't want to, then I really–"
"No, I didn't mean it like that." You blurted out without thinking, revealing your hidden intentions. You nibbled your lips in embarrassment. You were sure that Dowoon would think that you are crazy for keeping a fake boyfriend. Or worse, he merely didn't like you that way. He was acting after all, wasn't he?
"How about being your real boyfriend?" He suddenly asked, making you gasp in surprise. You came to a halt, stopping dead in your tracks. You couldn't believe what you had just heard.
On the other hand, Dowoon thought that it was because you didn't feel the same, so he started babbling about some nonsense until you grasped his wrist and told him to stop.
"I would love to get to know you better. And maybe go on a real date someday." You admitted sheepishly, not caring about the fact that your legs already became like jelly thanks to that expression on his face. He was so utterly gorgeous while his words melted your heart.
"Yeah. Me too." He nodded, looking down at his wrist where you rested your hands. When you wanted to yank them away, he stopped you and take your hand in his.
You realised right then and there that you theory really worked. Not just your best friend but you also fell in with your neighbour. Maybe it was written in the stars for both of you.
