11 Good Omens Fic Favorites
a.k.a. I was going to choose my personal top ten but was too indecisive
One of my fandom resolutions for 2023 is to get back into reccing, so here’s a very casual GO rec list to kick things off! Fics are ordered longest to shortest.
As with any rec list, please read the warnings and tags on ao3 and make whatever decisions are best for you. I hope you enjoy!
the bucket list by darcylindbergh (@forineffablereasons)
There was a certain look that Aziraphale wore occasionally—a pinched sort of moue that looked like he’d just taken a very large mouthful of cinnamon—which meant he thought Crowley was being ridiculous. He had put it on. “Hang on,” he had said. “You want us to do human things?” * If you're going to go native, you might as well go all the way.
absolutely stunning, I wanted to take breaks while reading to really let it all sink in, I felt ALL THE EMOTIONS (44k, incomplete, E)
Your Mirror by equestrianstatue (@justlikeeddie)
I'll be your mirror; reflect what you are, in case you don't know. Crowley drummed his fingers briefly against his mug, and then sat back a little in his chair. He gave Aziraphale a long, appraising glance, and then seemed to come to some decision. “Listen, angel,” he said, “let me pitch you something.” Lulled by the familiar patter of Crowley’s voice as he was, Aziraphale still recognised this to be vaguely dangerous territory. He swallowed. “Go on,” he said.
one of the best-executed non-linear narrative fics I've ever read—just masterful, really peels back the layers in their relationship (28k, E)
This Soul Outstreaming by Rend_Herring
“Why did you come here?” Aziraphale interrupts. “Why do you keep doing this?” All the saving, he means, all the chasing after Aziraphale he does. It can’t only be that he’s not keen to endure a replacement. That can’t be it, not anymore. He’s going to get himself in trouble, and then it’ll be Aziraphale’s fault. Crowley’s mouth shuts with a click. He shifts uncomfortably in his seat, reaches for the handle of the fork and taps his fingertips against it before setting his hands in his lap. When he speaks, it’s very soft. “Don’t you know?” he asks. Aziraphale, unnaccustomed to his heart refusing to translate why it throbs with such haste, shakes his head.
sad, tender, funny, and romantic with beautiful prose, really just everything you want, so many quotable lines (22k, E)
Lay me down in Eden by caricari (@heycaricari)
Two supernatural entities go for a walk and Crowley gets more than he bargained for.
SO ROMANTIC OH MY GOD in the dialogue, interior monologue, and actions, excellent characterization, so pure (then explicit lol) (17k, E)
You've Got Kudos by curtaincall (@fremulon)
Aziraphale and Crowley both write fanfiction. As it happens, they both write Good Omens fanfiction. Of course, neither of them would ever admit this to the other. (A love story told primarily in AO3 comments)
this is the most meta thing ever lmao, really impressive skins for the ao3 look—pay attention to all the little details like usernames, etc. (4k, M)
build me a city, call it jerusalem by gyzym (@gyzym)
Man begets man begets The Tales of Men, and there's nothing godly in that; Those Above and Them Below haven't any need for the stories humans have been hungry for since the snake and the Angel with the flaming sword.
pre-show fic written in 2012, leans heavily into religious themes and Biblical references, melancholic, spare but beautiful writing style (3k, T)
The Gift by entanglednow (@entanglednow)
In which there is a little wooden elephant, and a long overdue confession.
simple yet checks all the boxes, very very soft and sweet, the DEVOTION, more biblical settings, truly just lovely (3k, T)
Anthony J. Crowley, Retired Demon and Airbnb Superhost by TheOldAquarian (@darkpurpledawn)
What are you supposed to do when you've been fired from your sweet job in Hell for thwarting the schemes of Satan, you've got a swanky flat in Mayfair, and you're looking for an excuse to spend all your time in someone else's bookshop? Obviously, you turn to the dubious world of short-term vacation rentals. The resulting Airbnb property has been variously described as "an instagram trap," "a vampire den but make it botanical," and "the weirdest bed and breakfast in the shared history of beds and breakfasting."
a highly entertaining series of Airbnb reviews of Crowley’s flat—every single one kills me, as do our ineffable duo’s cameos (3k, G)
Kissing, Accidentally. by skybound2 (@skybound2)
Crowley doesn’t mean to kiss him, really. It just sort of…happens. An…automatic response, if you will. An unintended automatic response. Unexpected, even. It’s not planned, that’s what he’s trying to say. ~~~ Or the one where Crowley gives in and kisses Aziraphale while he has him pinned against a wall.
winner of best use of footnotes, hilarious, Crowley is WHIPPED and an absolute disaster of a demon, just delightful (2k, G)
Too Generous by rfsmiley (@redfacesmiley)
“You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.” Or: what happened after the [ we all got hit by a ] bus scene (aka "you could stay at my place, if you like")….
the TENSION, the PINING, ahh my heart was in my throat, excellent dialogue, and multiple P&P references (1.5k, T)
Interwoven Footsteps by skybound2 (@skybound2)
It takes them a while to get there. Six thousand years, give or take. But they get there.
criminally underappreciated (probably because it's super short), gorgeous, lush, sweet, their whole story in under 1k words (700, T)

BREAKING: SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY IN DISARRAY AS NEWCOMER UPENDS DOZENS OF ACCEPTED THEORIES
Up and coming British astrophysicist Dr. Anthony J. Crowley has rocked the science world this week with his research that proves many previously-accepted scientific theories about dark matter and the nature of our universe completely wrong. Dubbed the ‘Devil’s Theory,’ Crowley’s research has made the astrophysicist a star practically overnight, and one of the most sought-after scientists in the country.
“There’s so much you humans don’t understand about the universe, it’s not my fault that I do,” he said in a statement to BBC reporter Jane Smith. “Just you wait!”
[Crowley can't keep his mouth shut about the stars, and accidentally becomes a famous scientist.]

“Warlock,” Nanny had said, and cupped his face again, “I want you to promise me something. I want you to promise me something, and it might seem odd, but I need you to do it, okay?” “What?” said Warlock. “Just promise me,” said Nanny. “I promise.” “Good,” she’d said, “Now, if you ever—and I mean ever find yourself in a situation like this again—one that seems scary, or one where any normal person would be in danger—I need you to pray. Pray to Aziraphale or to Crowley to come and get you.” “Who’s that?” asked Warlock. “Just promise me,” insisted Nanny in a voice like iron, “Aziraphale and Crowley. Can you repeat those names?” “Y—yeah. Azif—Aziraphale and Crowley.” "Good boy."

hi i’d like to be financially dominated bc i need a laptop that doesn’t die randomly to write these bc i hate writing on my phone. here’s all the avatrice fic ideas i’ve practically laid out & written at @snowandwolves:
- and they were neighbors - this came from the idea of beatrice stress baking & she runs out of sugar, so she asks her neighbor… (prob set in NY bc idk how to NOT write about this city & its weirdness) — starts v cute. gets kinda devastating sorry in advance.
- the 100 au - somehow emotionally more aching but no one (important) dies - ava’s born with a disability & out of wedlock, which means she’s treated as a burden on the ark. her mom was floated when ava was a child. dr. salvius would adopt her if she didn’t have her son michael. but she treats her with ancient technology. beatrice has only known obligation to her people on the ground. loss is to be expected as commander. love is weakness. then, yknow, a girl with a halo falls from the stars & what other choice does beatrice have but to fall too?
- fallout 4 au - beatrice wakes up 200 years of cryo sleep when the bombs dropped. her parents who afforded the vault died. her secret romance with lucia makes her long for closure. she makes her way to diamond city looking for answers and meets a nosy reporter who enjoys causing problems for diamond city’s mayor. ava and her “brother” diego are doing their best to find the truth in the hellscape that is 2224. (also just imagine bea in power armor—“my knight in semi-rusted armor!” — ava prob)
- college au - i’ve written bits on here before (also set in NY bc idk what college town culture is like) - beatrice has everything planned out. ava is winging everything bc she was never supposed to get this far. (there’s a sequel to it that i’m plotting too & i’m sorry…)
- now & then au - it’s the 90s. basically i watched the scene where roberta plays baseball with boys. “girls can’t play ball. why don’t you go home and play with your dolls??” (“the only dolls ava has are GI Joes…” — camila) [ava punches him] beatrice pulls her off of him. “psycho bitch. too bad your mom’s dead and can’t teach you to act like a lady” [cue beatrice pushing ava back so she can kick his ass—gets a fat lip & black eye but NO ONE says that shit to ava.]
- airbnb au - (let’s pretend this isn’t messing up the housing market 😭 ) bea is financially independent of her parents & needs cash so she’s a superhost. where bea lives is quiet & peaceful. ava fucks that up. in an ava silva perfect kinda way. ava visits once a year over several years. they start falling in love but ava never stays.
less hashed out ideas:
- smallville/superman/supergirl au
- avatar/lok au
- this is how you lose the time war au (bc that book is my roman empire—all versions & threads of it)
if these exist already my b but i promise promise it’s coincidental—haven’t been reading much fics lately (other than seabiscuit’s western au).
anyway… back to work.

Good omens fic recs #9
Why God Doesn't Talk to Us Anymore by robotboy - A/C, 3k words.  A lovely f/f sex scene that feels a bit melancholic as well.  Aziraphale asks Crowley what it feels like to fall; and maybe means it in more than one way.
It's a new craze by attheborder - A/C, 5k words.  This is a very silly fic where Aziraphale and Crowley start a terrible advice podcast and eventually figure out their own relationship.  There's a lot of fun outsider POV in this.
Anthony J. Crowley, Retired Demon and Airbnb Superhost by TheOldAquarian - A/C or A&C, 3k words.  After Armageddidn't, Crowley decides to rent out his apartment on AirBNB, and these are the reviews.  Very funny, I've reread it half a dozen times.
In Mixed Company, or the Corporate Retreat of Heaven and Hell by TheOldAquarian - A/C, 52k words.  An extremely funny and light-hearted story in which Heaven and Hell do corporate retreats on Earth.  There are so many very funny details in this, like all of the lovingly described Heavenly motivational posters and the details of various presentations.  AND it manages to be a very hot get-together fic too.
Come Adore on Bended Knee (and Other Ways to Make an Angel Rejoice) by TheOldAquarian - A/C, 5k words.  A very funny and very hot fic in which Aziraphale and Crowley discover that embracing on Christmas Eve makes snow fall, and decide to just go with it.

Boardgame as prototype of academia? Thoughts on "Weather Machine"
My older son Walle is very interested in all sorts of board games. Most of the board games he likes to play is not very sophisticated, some are purely chance/luck based. Not being a fun of games in general, I play with him upon his request from time to time to teach him about rules (like taking turns and understanding boundaries) and reflective thinking.
In our recent tour to Chiang Mai, Thailand, we stayed in a superhost Airbnb owned by an ex-film director, who claims the biggest hobby is “collect board games”. Suddenly the love for board game becomes something of a longer time frame and bigger value. Again as a result of Walle’s strong interest, we played the “exploding cat”, a card game in which people will try all different action they could do with different cards (e.g., have a sneak peek of the cards to come and shuffle them) to avoid picking up the “exploding cat” which will get the player out of the game. It was fun for me as with group dynamics, intended moves could create unintended consequences, and the intensity of the game grow with the process of the game.
When we get back home, I got one box for ourselves. Upon receiving the box, Walle was super excited reading the rules, checking out the promotion code came with it, finding instruction for the electronic gadget attached in it. A video by the inventor of the game pointed out that the game is a variation of “Russian Roulette”. Aha!
So this morning I was checking out of interest what are some of the more updated fun board games out there, and there are plenty. Some are about wars, others are car racing (!) There is also a website /magazine? called BoardGameGeek who give out awards every year. Something to check out later!
There is one game called “weather machine” which caught my eyes. My interest in the word “weather” is almost completely unconscious but not without reason. Weather is usually used as example for chaos theory. For example the earliest use of the word “bifurcation” in describing sudden shift of system originates in Lorenz’ modeling for weather forecast, using non-linear equations. Weather is always a concern for The Muddy School as we operated outdoor a lot and summer thunder storm is a constant struggle. Theoretically Tim Ingold use to discuss air and land. Whether for him can bear lots of analogies. And also recently extreme weather conditions become more and more of a concern. News like California bushfire, Hawaii fire, and Beijing flood appears almost daily, and recent mud and rock flow close to my parents’ house in Xi’an killed at least 20+ people.
So how would a board game in 2022 address weather?
Turns out this game is also very much “research oriented”, not only in the way of using science to understand how weather works, but the game itself is about “how to operate in academic”. The activities involved in the game including choosing a field, doing field research and collect data, publish paper, citation, winning award etc, with winning the Nobel award as the ultimate goal.
Tumblr media
It was funny to read in its description that publishing a paper can also be a game activity. Obviously it is too far away from normal non-academic people’s life, and whoever gets the “joke”, aren’t they having enough of it in their REAL life? “Who would play that kind of game? And what for?” was my first reaction. But apparently, this game has been quite well received by people who used to be or are still in academia. Some people are buying it for the whole lab (!)
Tumblr media
People may have enjoyed it for different reasons, maybe they are being nostalgic of the research days, maybe they play it as group insider jokes. Imaging a group of researcher playing it and their spouses / non-researcher friends in the room thinking “what the heck are you doing”, or maybe they will join and start to understand for the first time what their husbands/wives do for a living for the first time. Maybe a professor can play it with his new PhDs as academia 101 class! (Think of all the 劇本殺 “screenplay kills” which are so popular in China, it is perfect for education purpose too)
I have been grappling with the topic of methodology a lot in the past week. What I think will be central to my inquiry is how a different understanding of the world (inspired by being in the nature) would change not only way of living / doing, but also our understanding of research and role of researcher. In that sense where I’m heading to is very different to the post-positivist view that underwrites this board game.
If academia way of life and logic of can be taught as a rule through board game, can it also be used to prototype another way of doing things, the intimate relations between practice and theory, personal and professional, rational and affective? Can it be used to understand the concept and dynamics, and maybe…influence more people and change the rules? Suddenly this board game seems to become a potential research outcome. The fact that this game “weather machine” started on Kickstarter is even more encouraging.
Now I need to figure out how to get a copy of this without costing a fortune…

Brandon Christensen’s SUPERHOST (2021, Shudder) is fun up to a point. Vlogger couple Sara Canning and Osric Chau visit and review rental properties. We’re told that some of their reviews are caustic, and one put a renter out of business. They’ve just booked a very-much-in-demand mountain retreat in Nevada (and it’s quite an impressive place), but when they get there, they discover their host (Gracie Gilliam) is a little eccentric. Then she goes beyond that. It’s all very funny at first and then gets creepier. Barbara Crampton has a nice cameo as the woman whose livelihood they’ve destroyed. But then the film moves in a direction it hasn’t earned. It would have helped had the film shown more of their work before getting to the main rental house. We only get a cursory idea of what their vlog is like, and we only hear about the bad experience with Crampton’s rental when we should be seeing it. Nor do we get any sense of what their followers' comments are like, and that’s a crucial part of the finale. Though Canning’s character is too focused on getting hits and keeping up their subscriber count, Chau is more of a sweetheart. When he proposes in a romantic setting, she thinks it’s just a stunt to get more subscribers. As a result, you can’t really root for them as a couple because of her, but you can’t enjoy the thought of anything bad happening to them because of him. The cast do good jobs, and Gilliam is very funny as the overly ingratiating host. It’s just a pity the whole things falls apart at the end. “Nailing the Dismount” could be a whole chapter if anybody wants to write a text on how to make a good horror film.

Good Omens Fic Recs (part 1)
It’s a new craze by attheborder
CROWLEY: I try not to make a habit of gratitude, but I must give our appreciation to everyone out there who’s been listening and subscribing to The Ineffable Plan.
AZIRAPHALE: Ooh, yes, we’ve become quite popular, haven’t we?
CROWLEY: Yeah, just hit number eight on the advice charts … No advertising at all.
AZIRAPHALE: Mm. How … miraculous.
CROWLEY: … Aziraphale. You did not.
***
Crowley and Aziraphale are very possibly the people least qualified, on the entire planet, to start up an advice podcast.
But what else is there to do when the world isn’t ending anytime soon, you’re technically on indefinite sabbatical from your lifelong careers, and you need a plausible excuse to spend more time with your best friend who you’re definitely not, absolutely not, maybe just a little, actually maybe overwhelmingly in love with?

He’s the fun uncle. You know, the immortal one by salt00
Uncle Crowley had been showing up to the occasional Shabbat for as long as anyone could remember. Even grandma remembered him from when she was a child. So of course they knew he was immortal. Probably. Uncle Ted wasn't convinced, but he'd married into the family anyways. Everyone else figured he had to be an immortal of some sort, not that anyone could agree on what kind. And no one was about to ask said immortal-man either. That would ruin all the fun!

Airbnb reviews complete guide
How to Get More Reviews on Airbnb - The Complete Guide As a host, it is vital to be responsive to reviews, both positive and negative Be proactive when reacting to reviews. Feedback can be used to improve your experience for the next guest. There are two ways for responding to reviews either with a response that is public and with private feedback. Utilizing both methods can help you gain more reviews. Cancellation reviews The reviews of cancellations published on Airbnb are published by past guests who've had a stay at the property. The reviews can't be edited or deleted, but they give prospective guests the ability to make comments openly. Rewrite cancellation reviews publicly by the guest. But make sure to read the Airbnb hosts policies prior to posting your review. If a guest cancels their reservation within 24 hours of their stay an automated review will appear on their profile. The review cannot be removed however, you are able to explain the reason for leaving your comment. Also, you can choose to share your review publicly when you have a valid reason to stop. Cancellation reviews from Airbnb may affect your likelihood of becoming the Superhost. This designation is only awarded to hosts who have a 1% cancellation rate or lesser. It is possible to lose Superhost status in the event of an overly high cancellation rate. It will take time until Superhost reinstates you. When you write a review of a cancellation, always discuss the issue with the guest. A mutually agreed upon agreement can reduce the chances of conflict and negative reviews. It is important to communicate regularly with guests, letting them know that you're there to help. You will be less likely to be contacted by a guest who cancels the Airbnb reservation. Airbnb has a feature available which allows customers to reply to reviews of cancellations. The feature is only accessible to customers who book but do not get there. It allows you to respond to feedback and also respond to other users. However, it cannot erase the cancellation. Reviews about cancellations can be replied to through changing the date for cancellation as well as providing valid reasons. Positivity Reviews that are positive from Airbnb is an essential aspect of having a great listing. People will be happy to get positive feedback from those who have stayed in the property. There is no need for negative reviews to be that are written about your property, so be honest regarding what you believe. Though some will try to hide negative reviews and make a point of highlighting the positives, it will damage your reputation and reduce your chances to be booked. If you want to write a favorable review Make sure you check the property thoroughly and don't overdo it. Your voice should be calm and considerate.
