Mr. Fenton is a competent teacher. Almost too competent.

If Mr. Daniel Fenton had any more than a BS (with a minor in education), Tim would’ve flagged his profile as a potential Rogue. That’s the way of most charismatic academics, at least in Gotham. (Got a PhD? Instant watchlist.) Instead, he’s Gotham Academy’s newest celebrity, as a young, passionate, out-of-towner substitute while the chemistry teacher’s on maternity leave.

Tim gets the hype. Fenton seems to genuinely love teaching, and is invested in the welfare of the student body. He hands out bananas during exam week, hosts a “study habits seminar” each month to coach effective learning strategies, and the third time Tim falls asleep in his class, he even pulls Tim aside to ask if he’s doing okay. With all the late work he accepts and the protein bars he sneaks Tim, he’s every teen vigilante’s dream teacher. He could’ve been Tim’s favorite.

In fact, Mr. Fenton was Tim’s favorite. Up until Tim walks into Mr. Fenton’s chemistry classroom for a forgotten textbook, an hour after the final bell.

On the board where tallied scores for today’s review game had been kept, “THE CHEMISTRY BEHIND DR. CRANE’S FEAR GAS: ANXIOGENICS, NERI’S, & YOU,” is now scrawled. A detailed diagram of the human endocrine system projects in front of a small crowd of adoring and attentive students.

Fenton is wrist-deep in the skull cavity of an anatomical model. A short tug, and out pops the brain.

It’s plastic. It’s fake.

Tim identifies the nearest emergency exit.

Fenton turns to the door, and in the dark classroom with the projector illuminating half his face, his eyes almost seem to flash red. “What’s up, Tim?” he asks. His friendly grin is too big for his face. “I didn’t know you wanted to join the Just Science League!”

Gotham’s a pretty wild place, even for someone who grew up a superhero in a ghost-infested town, so he takes it upon himself to start a club teaching kids how to manage themselves in the event of a crisis. one of the things about being an educator is that you hear what parents want their kids to be able to do a lot. they want their kid to be an astronaut or a ballerina or a politician. they want them to get off that damn phone. be better about socializing. stop spending so much time indoors. learn to control their own temper. to just "fucking listen", which means to be obedient.

one of the things i learned in my pedagogy classes is that it's almost always easier to roleplay how you want someone to act. it's almost always easier to explain why a rule exists, rather than simply setting the rule and demanding adherence.

i want my kids to be kind. i want them to ask me what book they should read next, and i want to read that book with them so we can discuss it. i want my kid to be able to tell me hey that hurt my feelings without worrying i'll punish them. i want my kid to be proud of small things and come running up to me to tell me about them. i want them to say "nah, i get why this rule exists, but i get to hate it" and know that i don't need them to be grateful-for-the-roof-overhead while washing the dishes. i want them to teach me things. i want them to say - this isn't safe. i'm calling my mom and getting out of this. i want them to hear me apologize when i do fuck up; and i want them to want to come home.

the other day a parent was telling me she didn't understand why her kid "just got so angry." this woman had flown off the handle at me.

my dad - traditional catholic that he is - resents my sentiment of "gentle parenting". he says they'll grow up spoiled, horrible, pretentious. granola, he spits.

i am going to be kind to them. i am going to set the example, i think. and whatever they choose become in the meantime - i'm going to love them for it.

Hello yes I do in fact know what my own surname means. I am half German by descent and grew up in Switzerland and speak fluent German and lived in Germany for almost ten years and married a German (who for some strange reason didn’t want to take my name 😅).

Try being taken seriously on the phone when they ask who it is and you say anything followed by ‘Scherz’.

Ironically, nobody in my family—as far as I’m aware, and we’ve traced part of our family tree back several centuries—has ever run a joke shop or had any other on-brand occupation.

I simply don't believe that 75% of people were watching the news live at 8:45 in the morning on a Tuesday when the strangest thing happened.” and like. okay. we can talk about the aftermath in the 22 years since 9/11 and the horrific and evil jingoism that ruined countless lives in decades-long wars all we want. but i cannot overstate enough that 1) we still very much had a monoculture in 2001. most americans would watch either the today show or GMA. 2) as soon as that first plane hit every news station in the country was covering it. schools and businesses and break rooms turned on every tv. every radio. anything that had the ability to broadcast the news. (smartphones weren’t a thing. cell phones and the internet existed but they were new and fragile. unreliable. your best bet was still to sit there and watch. or listen.) and we all sat there and watched the second plane hit and the pentagon hit and the towers collapse and flight 93. so, yes: basically everyone who was alive and old enough to form lasting memories in 2001 remembers that day and the coverage. even people who weren’t near a tv or radio in real time remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. they probably even remember the reason why they didn’t hear about it in real time. i was 5 years old in my first week of first grade and i remember it. it was like. the biggest thing to happen in this country since fucking. pearl harbor. bigger. there’s no need to downplay that.

#personally: my school intentionally kept us in the dark and didn’t dismiss us so i didn’t find out until i got home #but we all knew something was up because it was a glorious september tuesday and they cancelled recess to keep us inside #and all of the teachers looked shaken and some kids were picked up by their parents. #i still remember the look on the face of the mom of one of my classmates. we would later find out that her dad (my friend’s grandpa) died. #but they didn’t tell us what was going on and i think they made the right choice. #didn’t want to traumatize thousands children more than necessary. i think they were right. #i still remember exactly where i was and how my parents told us though #and i remember all of the coverage after. all of it.

i do think there’s something to be said re: the fact that some people resent / dislike shakespeare purely because of the fusty and by-rote way in which they were taught his plays in school. which is fair! because it strikes me that teaching shakespeare to kids purely with a view towards exams drains the plays of the very things that make them beautiful, and that make them so deft in what they have to say about the human condition. it’s like people who say they don’t like vegetables, but really they’ve never had them prepared properly. of course you’re going to hate shakespeare if they’ve boiled him within an inch of his life what you need is shakespeare fried in butter

God it just hit me.

Names are power in VnC. We call the piece of the world formula that defines a vampire their "true name." Learning and altering a vampire's true name gives you near-absolute power over them. Vanitas hides his old name as part of his "Vanitas" persona—a defense mechanism to hide his vulnerable self.

And names are an axis of discrimination too. The main way we've been examining discrimination against the dhampirs is through the lens of vampires refusing to call them by their names. And Luna, the perennial outsider, seems not to have been given a real name. They certainly didn't have a name that they liked or identified with for most of their life.

So with all that context, even more than it might be in another series, Teacher's whole name shtick becomes such an insane power move. He changes his name constantly and will brutally punish anyone that gets it wrong. Nobody has the power that would come from knowing whatever his first/true name was. He has the physical and social power to punish and correct anyone that doesn't call him what he wants to be called. He is in complete control of how people address him, or at least close to complete control, which is such a big deal within this story.

I'm learning with Proko classes but he has a Youtube channel with free cool lessons for beginners (perspective, shading, construction lines) he does have lessons for the head too I believe ! Of course, drawing your faves on the side, many times, helps.

When it comes to style unfortunately there's nothing more I can do, you make it, as you go 🎨🖌️I'm sure you have favourite movies, shows, books, artists, good strong influences that can help you craft it. The best way to get better at drawing is to have solid knowledge of your fundamentals. Understand how it works, why the bones are build that way and why they're called that way too ! (same thing for the muscles !) You can't draw something if that something doesn't have a name. Identify your weaknesses, keep pushing and working ! You'll see, it pays off ! ⬇️ (there's the Proko channel link down there)

Another very important advice would be to keep a sketchbook and fill it with doodles (no pencil !! only marker) we humans have this reflex of erasing our mistakes and then not learning ! Using a marker allows us to draw, fail, fail even more until we're on our knees crying, asking for mercy. But it's good, failure is good. Failure means you're learning, it's proof of your artistic journey. Like footprints. I understand fear can hold you back too but you can't do anything with nothing. You're not trying to reach for absolute perfection, that is not the purpose of this type of notebook, you can draw whatever you want!
