Queen of Shadows -> spoilers!!! Fair warning!!!!
*sighs*
Tumblr media
like what the actual fuck you guys
i finished QOS a couple days ago and i am still processing.
i worship the ground SJM walks on from this point on
THAT WOMAN IS BRILLIANT; her storytelling, though extremely aggravating is, perhaps, something from the gods
the point where (almost) every character's POV meet up in one spot (manon, dorian - demon dorian OMG, aelin, chaol, rowan) holy fuck brain melting
i loveeedddddd that scene with the witches and the king
OKAY OKAY OKAY
Manon ✂︎🕷🧨
okay first of all i am heterosexual until manon blackbeak is mentioned
because holy fuck
SHE IS SO --
idek i dont have words
and of course of COURSE manon saying dorian's name is gonna be enough to keep him holding on, OF COURSE
i love them
i hope they're mates
THE WAY SHE WENT BACK
THE WAY HE WAVED AS IF THE LAST TIME HE SAW HER SHE DIDNT BASICALLY BRING HIM BACK TO LIFE OKAY
god
i am so passionate about manorian already
love, love, love, love
and cant wait to see what she does with the 13
AND JESUS THE FIGHT SCENE WITH AELIN!!! that feels really really important
Tumblr media
and her + asterin
omg nothing better fucking happen to asterin. i. will. lose. it.
POOR ASTERIN
PROTECT HER FOREVER
i hate the witch queen grandma freak ong
Aelin + Rowan 🧸💛🏆
okay first of all, sjm let these dudes FUCK jesus christ
they're so horny LMAOOO
i love it, too
mates mates mates mates mates
i can feel it in my bones
and no i cant explain it, maybe rowan is just a lucky fucker who has 2 mates, maybe maeve has something to do with it IDK
but mates? yes
why? when dorian stabbed her (OW MY HEART @ THAT SCENE) rowan screamed in feeling it
kismet
i love them
i also have an extremely hard time envisioning a "metallic gold, skin-tight, night gown?" but whatever floats your boat rowan LOL
nonetheless, i loved that scene. ate it up. cleaned the plate. left no crumbs.
i really really just am absolutely whipped for how intensely rowan like pretty clearly loves aelin
she has so many males p whipped and im envious but also, i get it. i understand.
what else do i have to say????????
OH FUCK-
DORIAN ❄️💙⚡️
i was so relieved to see him unscathed
and how again think brain think how did he get free
OHHH THE RING
omg aelin is so damn smart - she was SO clever throughout this entire book
i did NOT see that coming, and actually SJM did a great job, once again, of totally switching gears towards the end of the book.
i predicted nothing and was FLYING through the last hundred pages
i am obsessed
cant wait to see him become the KING he was meant to be
... do not know what to think about the king of adarlan (the now dead one)
tho i am glad they kinda pivoted focus on the villain because i was not understanding how the plot was gonna extend for another 3 books
that being said i am not fucking excited to read tower of dawn
other honorable mentions!!!!
ps: i am literally at work writing this LOL
boss makes a dollar while i make a dime... im going on tumblr on company time HAHAHAH
elide -> i like her but also she was kinda annoying in morath and her constantly trying to escape, like obvi stay with the wing leader-- BUT i am excited that she is the daughter of marion (?? is that her name im having amnesia rn) and to see how her storyline will tie with aelin's as she seeks out for aedion + the gang
chaol -> lol why does he have an entire book? i would much rather have a book on rowan.!!!!! hence my procrastination with Tower of Dawn but whatever i'll read itttttttt. also (TOD spoiler i guess) i feel like i've seen yrene + chaol fanart which im like???? what about nesryn????
lysandra -> can i just SAY: i am so thrilled that i read assassin's blade before queen of shadows!!!! It makes me appreciate and love her story so much more. god i LOVE HER. im so glad aelin made her a part of her court. and she's so badass. i want to be a shapeshifter - you would never see me again (:
sad to see that ress + brullo did end up dying, but i can see it was inevitable? i guess? the king's way of punishing
i love aedion always and forever but as of now my brain has nothing to say for him besides he is the cutest thing for protecting rowan in the sewers ++++ wearing the dagger rowan gifted him in thanks constantly, i hope him + lysandra develop something but i might be alone in that boat
also, lol, him finding out about the blood oath
i felt bad
but aelin's solution "the more the merrier" LMAO
anyways
i love this series
it was a very slow start
and AGAIN, i am really procrastinating reading Tower of Dawn but i've heard it's worth it for a handful of reasons
tbh, i've already decided that my first re-read- ima just skip to HOF because how the fuck do we only meet rowan in the third/fourth book depending on how you read
wont lie on the slight panic i feel nearing the latter half of this series, but i will persist
cant wait to do aelin collages i see her most vibrantly amongst everyone, well her and manon
and rowan
because HOLY FUCK DO I LOVE ROWAN
he is my second sjm husband, rhy remains #1 (for now LOL)
okay im done i need to go back to work i suppose (BOOOO)

Hoo boy- that was a Session.  Last time we fought a bunch of skeletons- this time we found out where they came from.  The little village where the cultists’ dreadnought was anchored, where Maeve the paladin’s father had lived, and died, was empty- and the *stench* clued us in before we could even see. There was the skeleton- don’t get pedantic, just go with it- of a gigantic shark in the middle of the village, wrapped in- what can only be described as viscera.  Meat and skin and tendons and just- whatever’s left of a body when the bones have extracted themselves and walked away.  But Carver- lucky or unlucky as he might be- caught on to one important fact. None of the bodies that had been formed into this monstrosity were those of children.  Maeve said there were about five kids that she knew of, and so we knew we had prisoners or hostages somewhere- and that’s when the shark started to move.
The shark started to move, and a sahaugain blademaster came out of the cave system in the hill to challenge us, and wasn’t that a fun one.  Fortunately the shark was vulnerable to Turn Undead, and the blademaster was not immune to Blindness, nor Grease, nor a good solid knee-cappin’.
From there we went into the caves- Maeve knew this cave system from having grown up here, and after we closed one entrance with mold-earth we split, one healer per group, and went in the other two.  The sahaugain leader had the five kids tied up with enormous shark-egg cases attached to them- threatened to say the word and have them absorbed into Sudden Swarm Of Baby Sharks if we didn’t calm down and have a polite conversation.  Alan the revenant of Alistair pulled a fancy move and dove through the air, taking the kids with him, and we proceeded to clean house.  Carver mostly healed from a distance, but it *did* help, and after we got the monsters dead and the kids huddled up in some blankets with warm drinks and gentle reassurances, we prised open the giant clamshell that the leader had been using as a throne and found an enormous black pearl. We left the kids as safe as we could, then paddled our way out to the skeletal dreadnought that was floating in the cove.  There was a scout flying circles overhead on a roc, a giant skeletal figurehead on the front of the ship, and a few scattered cultists up top.  Our sneakier magical-type Sorianna slipped in through a poorly-latched gunport, disguised herself as a cultist, and got in to look around, finding the powder magazine, a whole (skeleton) crew sitting inert at the galley oars, and a couple of orcs and wereboars who paid her their respects as an Anchorite.
It was there that she found a half-elf imprisoned in a cage, weeping about being too tired to sing anymore, and started getting the whole story, which was relayed via telepathic link.  So it turns out, the ship is powered by a death knight of some kind, a fallen paladin who served Tyr and showed mercy to the wrong people, and got cursed for his troubles- doubtless there is a longer story there, but moving on- and is only grudgingly allowing the Talos cultists to use the ship if they provide companionship in the form of singing for him.  That’s the key to this whole thing.  He’s in control of the boat- and only so long as he’s happy is anything alive aboard it allowed to keep living.
Sorianna, in her cultist disguise, plays up the indignant cruelty and says ‘I’ll soon have this one singing again- just hand me over those keys.”  And it WORKS.  So she’s working with the half-elven singer to try and persuade the death knight haunting the boat to get SUPER upset with the people making him go places and do things.
Meanwhile, up top, on getting the ‘Go’ signal, Trinidad RIPS the giant skeleton figurehead off the front of the boat, and skips it twice over the water.  It HAD been looking at us and starting to make reaching motions with its halberd, but you’re just not beating that angry tortle barbarian strength, bud.  This skeleton honest to god thinks better of it and just swims off.  Just ‘nope’.  They’re not paying it enough.
Alan has been hiding in the shadows of the stair between top and middle deck, and when the scout with the roc lands and points out to the cultists that there are two intruders standing on the rocks nearest the boat, plain as day, he pulls a MASSIVE sneak attack- and uses it to wound the roc so that it can’t fly away.  So we have a massive kicking, screaming bird on the deck, unable to fly away but also IN THE WAY and biting.
Some crazy shit is happening.  Carver initially tries to just take one of the weaker looking cultists, but ends up surrounded- and casts Spirit Guardians, once again surrounded and protected by a bunch of smaller spirits that look like Glory, doing a Sailor Moon thing, in a FIFTEEN FOOT RADIUS CIRCLE that catches EVERYONE UP TOP.  EVEN THE ROC.
So they’re taking 3d8 Radiant damage every round, even as some more cultists pop up from the deck and start casting things like Hold Person and ordering strong orcs to wheel the giant crossbows on the deck around and use them.  One of these is fired at the magically paralyzed Carver.
It misses.
It takes out the one person surrounding him that was next in combat and able to stab him.
There is a lot going on and a lot of enemies and we are all starting to take actual damage, but if the gods are good and the dice don’t fuck us, next time we might be able to start making some real headway of clearing out this boat.  So here’s to a rousing session next week starting in media res, and may the powers have mercy on our souls.

when  gwendolyn  first  learned  she  was  with  child,  she  was  ecstatic.  she  prayed  &  prayed  for  a  girl.  she  daydreamed  often  about  what  it  would  be  like  having  a  mini  her;  pictured  her  in  pageants  (  dominating  the  competition  if  she  was  anything  like  mommy  ),  in  ballet,  getting  their  nails  &  hair  done  together  like  close  mommies  &  daughters  do.
when  she  found  out  she  was  having  a  boy,  she  begrudgingly  accepted  it  as  her  fate,  but  vowed  to  try  again,  already  planning  her  next  pregnancy  while  still  pregnant  with  her  first;  a  child  she'd  name  keith,  &...  she  liked  him  okay.  the  first  born  always  occupies  a  special  place  in  the  heart;  but  she  wanted  a  girl.  keith  would  grow  up  knowing  a  subtle  kind  of  rejection.  the  second  time  gwendolyn  learned  she  was  with  child,  she  was  over  the  moon.  this  time  she  knew  it'd  be  a  girl--  a  psychic  had  told  her  so.  she  didn't  listen  to  anything  else  the  psychic  had  to  say.
* 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭   𝐢𝐢.
georgia  was  her  mother's  perfect  little  doll...  until  she  wasn't.  but  until  then,  she  dressed  her  up,  ensuring  she  only  adorned  pastels,  bought  her  lots  &  lots  of  barbies--  replacing  the  ones  that'd  turn  up  with  their  heads  missing  with  dozens  more--  forced  her  into  hosiery  &  leotards  while  the  child  cried  &  cried  &  cried,  smiled  through  the  embarrassment  when  she'd  sabotage  her  own  performances  at  pageants,  smiled  in  polite  agony,  face  colored  crimson,  when  she'd  pick  georgia  up  from  school  with  her  dresses  covered  in  dirt,  pigtails  lopsided  &  drooping  sadly.  this  wasn't  what  she  pictured  having  a  daughter  would  be  like.
but  instead  of  letting  up,  letting  georgia  explore  her  own  interests,  she  pressed  on.  her  sights  eventually  set  on  the  silver  screen.  by  6,  georgia  was  crying  on  disney  sets.  by  10,  she  had  no  more  tears  left  to  cry;  &  what  would  be  the  use  anyway  ?  they  never  worked.  by  15,  georgia  was  acting  out  in  a  very  different  way.  her  father  was  gone,  driven  away  across  the  country  &  an  ocean  by  gwendolyn,  her  step-father  mostly  looked  the  other  way,  complicit,  her  brother,  in  prison--  gwendolyn’s  biggest  disappointment  &  heartache.  georgia  was  alone.
* 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭   𝐢𝐢𝐢.
by  16,  georgia  had  been  dropped  by  disney,  &  a  deep  depression  would  befall  her.  when  she  was  younger,  friday  night  lights  used  to  glint  off  of  warm  starry  eyes.  her  father  &  step-father  would  take  her  to  all  the  games  &  teach  her  all  the  happenings  on  the  field  until  they  made  up  their  own  little  game  of  guessing  plays--  up  until  there  came  a  time  when  georgia  would  always  emerge  victorious.  she  dreamed  of  following  in  her  father’s  footsteps  when  she  was  young,  but  now,  it  was  too  late.  her  youth  had  been  wasted,  &  she  felt  utterly  drained.  she  used  to  think  she  had  all  the  time  in  the  world,  but  adulthood  was  rapidly  approaching,  &  all  she  could  do  was  lament  over  all  that  wasted  time.
she  eventually  dug  herself  out,  some  time  an  ocean  away  from  her  mother  doing  her  good,  but  when  she  returned  home,  gwendolyn  had  replaced  her.  this  time,  this  baby  would  be  a  mini  her.  like  her  brother,  georgia  would  come  to  know  a  subtle  kind  of  rejection.
generally  easygoing  &  big-hearted,  over  the  years,  georgia’s  earned  a  bad  reputation  she’s  undeserving  of.  while  she  has  difficulty  controlling  spurs  of  anger,  said  anger  is  never  without  reason,  it’s  simply  exacerbated.  she  doesn’t  take  too  kindly  to  aggressive  authority  figures  or  injustice.  after  she  established  a  podcast  on  youtube  &  spotify  when  she  was  20,  however  (  the  subject  matter  is  some  of  everything;  football,  soccer,  pop  culture,  racy  content,  politics,  think  pieces,  philosophy,  she  even  hosts  people  on  occasion  to  keep  things  fresh  &  exciting  ),  people  were  finally  able  to  get  to  know  the  real  her.

Chapter 1~
The wind whipped by her ears fast as that of the Staghorns as Aelin Ashryver Galathynius raced down the halls of her newly refurbished castle. She could hear the screech of her mate Rowan angrily echoing down the ginormous halls as she loosed another hearty laugh and dodged a few passing servants. A white spot appeared in the corner of her eye as her partner in crime, Fenrys, raced by in his giant wolf form and she could see a twinkle of mischief in his eyes as he held the brick of pink dye in his mouth. She was about to shout as Aedion and Lorcan came from the shadows and were able to snag Fenrys but she was a little too fast for them and raced onward as Fenrys' howl of anger and Aedion's barked curse at her floated to her ears. "Dammit Lorcan let go of him we need to catch her or Rowan is gonna kill us!" If Aelin wasn't running as fast as she could she would've doubled over in laughter at the thought. She raced down hallways and past servants and guards alike before her fae instincts screamed at her too late as Elide popped out of nowhere and Aelin slammed headfirst into a wall to avoid running into the Lady of Perranth. "Gods Aelin you're going to kill yourself one day and leave us with a kingdom to run!" Elide ranted while frantically checking to see if her queen was ok. "I'm fine I'm fine I need to go before-" Aelin stopped as a flash of light and an angry pink haired fae warrior was snarling with 500 years' worth of wrath in her face. "Heeyyy Rowan I was JUST looking for you to ask you about-" "Why in the seven burning rings of hell is my hair PINK?" Rowan asked viciously. Aelin scoffed, "And why pray tell are you asking me about that?" She asked innocently. Aedion and Lorcan appeared from down the hallway hauling Fenrys between them who made himself a dead weight so as not to be brought to justice. "Aelin our plan is totally safe I didn't tell them it was your idea." Aelin slapped her face ~Gods Fenrys is a horrible whisperer~ she thought to herself and tried to think of a lie to get out of this one. "Before you were about to say whatever your smart-ass mouth could come up with why did you have to drown my golden locks also?" Aedion whined, upset while fingering his poorly done pink ends. "Actually that was all me." Lorcan sniped out before Elide slapped his head and dragged him off somewhere. "Well what a happy ending I'm just going to go occupy myself elsewhere." Aelin chimed then ran away to angry fae grumbles while giggling to herself. Times are peaceful now almost a little to boring, and she knew she should kick herself for thinking that but as Aelin remembered that promise her and Rowan had made to themselves on the boat in the middle of the ocean to savor the peace, she didn't think it would be this boring. Pranks on Rowan were the things her and her sadistic court lived for but it really didn't stop the churn of adventure living in her chest. Ahh the crown room Aelin thought before striding into the locked chamber which housed her crowns as well as the crowns of some fallen enemies such as Maeve's which she now stopped before. "No stop!" She could hear Fenrys' pleas in her ear as Maeve stepped towards her iron coffin to inflict whatever hell she decided was to be done today on Aelin's body. Stop she told herself. And as Aelin shook away those painful memories she reached out to touch that beautiful cruel crown. As her fingers grazed the pure gold around the ruby diadem warning bells pealed in her blood just as they had when she touched the wyrdstone and just as she was about to pull back a light flashed and everything went dark.
~~Chapter 2~~
Azriel smirked at his court as Amren was mere seconds away from splattering Cassian against a wall for whatever pig like statement he had just made which had Mor turning red and Rhysand howling while Feyre looked on annoyed. He was about to chime in with a quip of his own when one of his shadows tickled his ear and he stood up abruptly snarling. Everyone at the table silenced as Rhys asked, "Az what is it?" "I don't know stay here." "Wait I wanna co-" Cassian's statement cut off as Azriel walked into the shadows and appeared outside of the crown room Rhys had once brought Feyre too. He winnowed into the glow worm lit room with Truth-Teller drawn and was easing out his sword from behind his back when he heard the groan of discomfort from the corner hidden in the most darkness. He sent shadows over only for them to be blown back by a wave of blue fire as a golden haired blue-eyed High Fae female stood up on shaky legs with a confused gleam in her eye. "Who are you why are you in my throne room?" She demanded with a snarl in her voice. "I should be asking you that." Azriel snarled with just as much venom. "You shouldn't be questioning me at all since I am the Queen." Aelin remarked while tossing her hair over her shoulder in cool indifference while taking the chance to observe the fae male and her surroundings. "Wait why do you have wings." Azriel noticed the blood had drained from her face as she noticed his bat like wings poking from behind his back as he said, "I'm an Illyrian and we skin intruders alive whether they're supposed queens or not." "Supposed my ass I fought and nearly died for my crown as the rightful heir of Terrasen thank you very much." "What's Terrasen?" Azriel asked with caution. As another shocked look passed across her features he could indeed sense the dominance that flowed through her veins and was about to ask another question before the door was blown open by Cass and Rhys. "Azriel what the he-" Cassian was saying before he noticed the the beautiful and dangerous looking female. "Who are you and how did you get in here?" Rhysand asked and Azriel noticed the way her eyes roved over both of them and she deemed Rhys more of a threat than any of them in the room. Smart girl he thought as she turned around and asked, "Why do we go over these things I'm pretty sure you don't know as much as I don't know." She retorted and smirked as Cass choked on a dark laugh. "Well I'm the High Lord of this court and you've interrupted my dinner so I will kindly ask for you to walk with us down the hall." Rhys said and the girl looked him up and down and said, "I'm a Queen I'm not told or asked to do anything." It was Rhys' turn to look baffled as he said, "Queen?" And she nodded her head. Azriel could see the look on Rhys' face as he probed the girl's mind and told him and Cassian in their heads" She's telling the truth. She is a queen of a territory called Terrasen and has never heard of Prythian or the Night Court." Azriel kept his face a mask of composure while Cassian blurted, "You're really a Queen? That doesn't make sense this is Prythian there's nothing I've ever heard of called Terrasen." Azriel inwardly groaned as the girl's face drained of all color as she quietly asked, "What do you mean you've never heard of Terrasen?"
Chapter 3~
Aelin kept her hands hanging loosely to her sides as she walked down the hallway behind the loud Illyrian-Cassian and checked the corner of her eye to make sure the other one- Azriel- was where he should be without making subtle movements. She noticed the light reflected off of the red walls and looked out one of the many windows to see a beautiful city with a gorgeous rainbow jutting out of the crystalline waters. She's never seen any city that could compare to the beauty of this place. "You should see Velaris at night this is nothing compared to after dark." Aelin glanced over to where Rhysand was watching his city with adoration on his face and glanced towards her and smiled non threateningly. "I've never seen any city like this . The only one that comes close was a city that was held by a demon queen and I encircled it with my flames after she whipped my friend." Aelin could see Cassian's head whip towards her as he asked, " You encircled a city with your fire? How big was the city?" "Trying to see how strong I am are you?" Aelin asked smirking. "Well if you must know I did and several other faeries were trying to put out my fire and that city was much larger than this one." Aelin watched as him and Azriel casually let their hands fall within reach of their weapons and edged closer to Rhysand. "Calm yourselves guard dogs I'm simply telling part of my story." Aelin laughed a little bit and was about to continue onward when she realized she didn't know where she was going and with a chuckle Rhysand resumed his escort with his hands in his pockets. They turned a corner and Aelin was greeted with a sitting room filled with light and she scanned the area just to be stared down by six other fae. "My court you see. That one eyed red haired male is Lucien, the female and her sister next to him are Elain and Nesta. That short evil thing over there is Amren with the silver eyes, the weird blonde girl over there is my cousin Mor and the most beautiful person in this room in my totally unbiased opinion of course, is my mate and High Lady Feyre." As Rhysand introduced all of the fae in the room they gestured or nodded with still wary looks in their eyes. "Rhys who is she?" The High Lady-Feyre- questioned him. "Why she's the Queen of Terrasen of course." Aelin laughed as an annoyed look flashed over her face. "And where exactly is Terrasen." Feyre asked her now staring directly at her. "Honestly I don't know. I was in my crown room one moment then here the next." Aelin answered while also staring right back at the female. The whole air was uncomfortable for the next few minutes with alot of staring until Rhys said, " Ok I've told you guys the full story can we stop this nonsense." "What do you mean you told them the story there was no talking." Aelin said and looked at everyone who indeed looked as if they had been having a group discussion. "My cousin can read minds and talk through them. How about you and me go get ourselves rip-roaring drunk this has been a weird day." Aelin looked to where the blonde-Mor- was standing and said, " Finally something that makes sense." Mor walked over grabbed her hand and they winnowed out to Rita's. "Well I'm wanted at the Summer Court. Have fun sorting this one out Rhysand." And with that Amren winnowed herself away. "So what the hell do we do now." Lucien questioned Rhys who said, "We try to get our dear friend Aelin back home."
Chapter 4~
Lysandra walked down the hallways softly humming to herself. The dinner bell had just been rung mere minutes ago and she was still a while off before she reached the massive dining hall. She thought about what would be served tonight as she glanced down at the polished marble floors and back up to the walls that were covered with various paintings depicting the war or Aelin. She sure does love looking at herself Lysandra thought. A sound pricked at her trained ears and she shifted into a fae form and jogged a little down the hallway to see the fae males of her court spread out in the dining hall snarling and upset. "Ok boys what's going on dinner not on time?" She joked before her husband Aedion appeared and she noticed his pink ends. "Aedion if you'd wanted to dye your hair I would suggest purple it suits you more." She joked before he snapped out, "Aelin's missing." "What do you mean she's missing." Lysandra said while scanning the faces of Lorcan Fenrys and Elide. She had yet to spy Rowan but she guessed he was out soaring and seeing what he could see above the castle. "Its been hours since we've seen her last and the scent trail Fenrys picked up led to the crown room and ended in there." "What do you mean ended in there? What is there some secret chamber like Dorian's castle?" Lysandra snapped and Aedion smiled a bit as he said, " I wish but we looked everywhere even Lorcan pitched in." "Pssshhh who are we to trust him he probably said he looked but was eating some soup instead." "Hey I looked don't insult my loyalty to my queen." After Lorcan said this everyone paused and looked at him disbelievingly. "Lorcan it's not nice to lie sweetie." Elide chimed in innocently and Lysandra had to clamp her lips to keep from laughing, as Lorcan snarled a little. "I've notified the guards and just came back from asking the wolf tribe in Oakwald but they haven't seen her either." Fenrys said as he leaned against the table and ran his fingers through his golden hair. "I wonder what in hell she's cooking up now." Fenrys said just as a window was blown open and Rowan flew through and shifted neatly before standing in front of their assembled group. "Why does she always feel the need to disappear?" He asked just a little to calmly. That was indeed stress that Lysandra could see darkening the planes of his face. "I bet she's just cooking up some scheme that's going to make us all keel over and die finally." Aedion joked and clapped Rowan on the back. "Besides she's a big girl she can handle herself." Fenrys also chimed in with a forced lightness. At that Lorcan nodded and walked out with Elide just steps behind him saying something too quietly for Lysandra to hear. "I'll go and look through the town." Lysandra offered to no one in particular and Fenrys said "Oh I'll join you we need to get Aedion's purple dye." Aedion's snarl floated towards their ears as they scampered out laughing to themselves.

The Worm Reads: Empire of Storms, Ch 51 - 53
Sorry these have been coming out a little later than usual, I was sucked into a Nuzlocke playthrough.
Eyllwe’s coast was burning. For three days, they sailed past village after village. Some still burning, some only cinders. And at each of them, Aelin and Rowan had labored to put out those flames.
You get three guesses as to whose feelings over innocent people being burned alive are focused on. The first two don’t count.
Rowboat and the narrative splooge over how ~angsty and tortured~ Alien feels over Eyllwe being burnt and attacked, and how much she’s doing by staying on the ship and trying to put out the flames from there. Yawn. Maybe if Alien wasn’t a shitty character, I’d care.
Also there’s a rumor that Alien herself is starting these fires??? It probably won’t be important, it’s probably just for Alien to cry over so Rowboat can comfort her.
[Rowan]’d breathed [Aelin] in, and she knew he detected an answer to the question that had caused him to flee that morning on the ship. No, she was not carrying his child.
Oh great, this is returning. SJM uses this to briefly describe a sex scene between Rowboat and Alien where Alien reveals she’s not taking anything to prevent pregnancy. I mean, well, where would she get that on a medieval ship?
And then [Aelin] had explained that if she’d inherited so much of Mab’s Fae blood, she might very well have inherited the Fae’s struggle to conceive. And even if the timing was horrible … if this was to be the one shot she had of providing Terrasen a bloodline, a future … she would not waste it.
UMMMM WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.
WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST READ.
It literally explains after this Alien didn’t ask Rowboat if he wanted to have kids. She is literally using him to have sex with in an attempt to have children without his consent. WHAT THE FUCK. THIS IS NOT OKAY!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS NOT CONSENSUAL OR HEALTHY!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, but since Alien is a woman and Rowboat is a man, it’s suddenly okay???? WHAT THE FUCK AM I READING
So aside from that extremely horrifying implication, the gang makes it to the Stone Marshes and Manon has to say goodbye to Abraxos, since he’d be too noticeable on the marshes. I cry.
Manon swallowed hard. “You saved my life. Many times. I never thanked you for it.” Abraxos let out another low whine. “You and me,” she promised him. “From now until the Darkness claims us.”
Tumblr media
I can’t believe a bloodthirsty witch and her pet wyvern are the only two characters I care about on this entire ship besides Gav. Despite SJM trying to ruin Manon’s character, she and Abraxos still deserve better.
Manon tears up that red cloak from her half sister she killed and uses it to tie her hair back, before chucking the rest of it into the sea. SJM can’t resist the urge to then make it all about Alien’s feefees.
Aelin Galathynius said quietly, “You never stop seeing their faces.” It was only when they were rowing for the shore, spindrift soaking them, that Manon realized the queen hadn’t meant the Thirteen. And Manon wondered if Aelin, too, had watched that cloak floating out to sea and thought it looked like spilled blood.
Manon just had to cope with the idea her Thriteen might be dead and it’s all about Alien feeling upsetti some country people she’s never met died. adhjgfjah I’m fine, I’m fine, it’s all fine.
Next chapter opens up with Lorass and Elide on their journey to find Alien. Lorass says that the dark god himself Hellas is guiding him or some shit...? I don’t really care. They’re off the boat and come across a place that got fucked up by something.
Indeed, the hair on his arms had risen, every instinct on alert as he scanned the marshes, the ruins, the brambles, and thick foliage that had choked some of the islands. Even the god of death halted his nudging and ducked behind Lorcan’s shoulder.
You.. just spent several paragraphs splooging about the connection between the god of death and Lorass and how badass it is, and now you’re saying the god of death is cowering behind Lorass. SJM, you’re killing me I hope you know. You’re killing me.
“What is inside these marshes?” [Elide] asked instead. “Why is Aelin headed into them?” (...) “I don’t know,” [Lorcan] admitted. “No towns or outposts exist anywhere nearby.” Yet this was where the dark god had led him—and where that hand still pushed him to venture, even if it quaked.
I’m tired. Have a reaction image to sum up my feelings.
Tumblr media
They travel for a couple of days across the marshes. One night, Elide hears some spoopy noises, so she asks Lorass to tell her about Maeve.
“Do you love her?” Those eyes, darker than the gaps between the stars, slid to her. “I have been in love with Maeve since I first laid eyes on her.”
Tumblr media
Maeve treats all of you like servants, and in some cases slaves, and has no real affection for any of you. You’re her soldiers, and she’s not exactly a caring queen. Why are you all in love with her? Is it because she’s hot?
Elide’s like “uhh that doesn’t sound like love at all” and Lorass gets all pissy. Lmfao he’s just angry because she’s right.
“I think love should make you happy,” Elide said, remembering her mother and father. How often they had smiled and laughed, how they had gazed at each other. “It should make you into the best possible version of yourself.”
Funny how SJM understands this........ but writes Ratlin as posessive and abusive assholes to each other and has Alien not ask Rowboat for consent.... *thinking emoji*
tl;dr Elide kisses him and Lorass decides to make out with him. I’m not... horribly offended as I am with Ratlin, it’s just kinda a dumb ship with no chemistry, but hey, I’ll take that over the pile of dogshit that is Ratlin.
Lorass is about to slide into second base when he hears a bunch of Ilken arriving, and it’s implied they’re coming for Alien. I feel bad for how short this review is at the moment, so let’s keep going to chapter 53.
Two days into the endless labyrinth of the Stone Marshes—two, not the day and a half that gods-damned Rolfe had suggested—Aelin was inclined to burn the whole place to the ground.
Oh no, one half of a day more than his estimate... stop being such a whiny lil shit, Alien.
[Aelin] kept the [insects] away with a shield of invisible flame, revealed only by the zinging as they slammed into it. She might have felt bad, had they not tried to eat her alive the first day here.
Why would you feel bad for killing insects? They’re bugs who could possibly be carrying diseases. So Alien feels bad for killing dangerous insects, but not some of Rolfe’s people?? Lmfao you are so full of shit, SJM.
[Fenrys] could no doubt leap the gaps between the islands in wolf form, as could Gavriel. Why they bothered staying in Fae form was beyond [Aelin].
Ok, so like... why are they staying in Fae form, then? Also, that wording implies that Gav also has a wolf form, which he does not, he shifts into a lion.
Lysandra and Fenrys lowkey flirt with one another over their brands or some shit? Skipping this like my life depends on it tbh.
Dorian and Manon hauled themselves onto the bank below, dripping wet
But did they haul their asses onto the bank? This is important information the world needs to know, SJM!
Aedion, seated beside [Aelin], passed the too-light skin of wine. She swigged from it, glad for the sour slide that washed away any lingering taste of the meat.
Oh my god... they drink wine instead of water? This explains so much about these books. Corrected by @kittyinhighheels that this is actually historically correct! Thank you for correcting me on that.
Anyways, some swamp beast attacks them out of the blue, aiming for Manon, but Dorito stops it with his ice magic.
But Aelin looked back at Rowan, holding his stare. How convenient that your shield vanished right as that thing waddled up. What an excellent opportunity for a magic lesson. What if it had gone wrong? Rowan’s eyes glittered. Why do you think the hole opened up by the witch?
So Rowboat was willing to risk  Manon’s life - and possibly others - in order to... shoehorn in a magic lesson for Dorito? Nope. This was an excuse for Dorito to save Manon, and you all know it.
Apparently, the amulet Alien carries is an entirely different symbol and meaning in the witches’ culture. That’s actually kinda cool, I like it. Manon tells the story of Rhiannon Crochan and how she cursed the other witches before she died. It’s pretty neat; SJM really should’ve cut out the Alien bullshit and kept the series about the witches.
Later on, the male Fae fuck off to have a private conversation.
Gavriel said, “You should take Aelin a thousand miles from here. Tonight.” A wave of [Rowan’s] magic and honed instincts told him all was safe in the immediate vicinity, calming the killing rage he’d slipped into at the thought.
Jeeeeeeeeeeeesus, Rowboat. I get wanting to protect your loved ones but he gets such a fucking raging anger at the thought of anyone near Alien and it’s so fucking gross.
Fenrys points out the similarities between Manon and Alien, like they’re both have different sides of heritage, both lsot queens, etc. Yeah, but you also forgot that Alien is a raging selfish asshole and Manon isn’t, so.
Fenrys breathed, “Maeve will not allow herself to lose. Already, she’s replaced you.” Rowan whirled on Gavriel. “Who.” Those lion’s eyes darkened. “Cairn.”
Why do you care? This is treated as a big reveal when A) Lorass already told us about this dude, and B) Of course Maeve would replace you after you left.
Cairn … No amount of training, both off the battlefield and on it, had ever broken the Fae warrior of his penchant for cruelty. Rowan had locked him up, flogged him, disciplined him, wielded whatever shred of compassion he could muster in himself … nothing. Cairn had been born savoring the suffering of others.
Oh, of course he’s a one dimensional evil bad guy, too. SJM doesn’t know what nuance means.
For Maeve not to have given either male a gag order through the blood oath
I had to read that, so you do too.
Apparently Maeve wants Lorass dead because he and Rowboat are the msot powerful males in the world. Hnnnnnnnngh and as if that gushing isn’t bad enough, Fenrys literally asks Rowboat to kill him if Maeve makes him kill Alien.
Alien is such a goddamn Mary Sue, literally every character loves her and kisses her ass and those who hate her are villainized to hell and back. I’m so tired.
“I’m glad, you know,” Fenrys said with unusual graveness, “that I got this time. That Maeve unintentionally gave me that. That I got to know what it was like—to be here, as a part of this.” Rowan didn’t have words, so he looked to Gavriel. But the Lion was merely nodding as he stared down at the little camp below. At his sleeping son.
F-fuck... this got to me. Gav and Fenrys deserve better and they better not die I swear to god.

Which of the Shishigumi would look just as handsome as a musclegut? What about Bill? Could you see Riz being good-looking as a musclegut too, considering he's a 'bear'?
Tumblr media
I had to google this. Why did you make me google this.
Whatever floats your boat honestly? I don't think Bill or Riz fit that, maybe Gouhin? I could see maybe Dolph too.

Part I: The Search
Lorcan
Lorcan was surprised at how much it had hurt after Elide ignored him and sidestepped him for the witch Asterin, back when they were on the shores of the Stone Marshes. And then she had barely spoken to him after he, Gavriel, and Rowan traveled in search of Aelin Ashryver Galathynius.
He knew he deserved it, knew he deserved it when Elide cursed him with her hateful words, and then later he had been stripped of his blood oath without honor. Did she hate him? He shuddered at the thought. He had only meant to protect her, and yet Maeve had used her like a pawn against the weakened fire–queen, Aelin Galathynius. Lorcan shook his head to try and clear his thoughts.
It had only been a few days since they had left in search of Aelin. Rowan was determined to find her, but with each passing day he grew more and more tense… And the hollow look in his eyes appeared more often. The closest Lorcan had come to experiencing Rowan's pain was when he saw Queen Maeve standing with Elide, who was being held by a Fae warrior with a knife to her slim throat. His heart had stopped, and he bit back the immediate urge to attack his Queen, the sovereign he had still been sworn to.
And now… He knew he no longer loved her, not anymore, not since Maeve threatened to have Elide whipped by Cairn and then made Elide watch as Cairn whipped the tattered queen. Not after Maeve commanded him to be still and silent. And then stripped him of his blood oath without honor. Lorcan swore under his breath, his face darkening. He splashed cold water onto his face and shook the droplets off.
Lorcan and Elide were currently resting at an inn in a small town on their way to Wendlyn, the continent west of Erilea. Along with Rowan and Gavriel, they had all thoroughly discussed all of the places Maeve could take Aelin. Rowan and Gavriel were out in their shifted forms, desperately searching for whispers in the wind, for any hint or sign of Maeve or where her boat was. Aelin could be anywhere in Erilea or Wendlyn, although they all agreed it was likely Maeve would show up in Doranelle eventually, especially because Lorcan was banned from returning.
Elide was downstairs gossiping; they had been hopping from town to town for the past few days in search of information, and Elide was still giving him the cold shoulder. She spoke to him only when necessary, and whenever he tried to apologize, she quickly excused herself and often went to ask Gavriel a question if he was around, or sat by him for warmth on cold nights. Lorcan would instinctively bare his teeth, and Gavriel would always pretend he didn't notice the male aggression. He would turn his back as if to say, You deserve it. Suffer the consequences patiently. She'll talk to you when she's ready.
Elide's laughter floated up the stairs, and Lorcan was reminded that his task was to make sure she was safe. Who knew where King Erawan or her loathsome uncle Vernon had sent men? They had infiltrated the Kingdom of Adarlan so easily. He pulled on a shirt and schooled his expression into neutrality while he headed downstairs, where Elide was chatting with a young couple at a table. He slid next to her wordlessly, and the couple's eyes widened as they took in his appearance. Lorcan bowed his head slightly to seem less threatening, like Elide had said.
"Oh! Logan! It's rude if you don't introduce yourself," Elide feigned surprise and chastised him teasingly, while batting her eyelashes. Nice that she was still able to act so friendly towards him. He resisted the urge to bare his teeth at her and drag her up the stairs so they could talk about her behavior.
"Hello, my name is Logan." He inclined his head slightly and smiled. Lorcan hated acting, but they had all agreed that it was best not to use their real names, since enemy ears could be anywhere. Both the man and woman appeared unremarkable, perhaps townspeople looking for news from outsiders, he surmised.
"Logan, this is Nat and Linsy. We were just chatting about the awful weather we've been having and when the rain's supposed to stop." It was dreadful out. It had been raining nonstop and traveling all day in the rain was too miserable. Elide had wrung her dress out on the doorstep of the inn when they first arrived.
"Logan is my fiancé," Elide continued to explain, casually bringing her hands above the table so that the couple could see them. She waggled her left hand. "Unfortunately, I don't have a ring yet because we've been traveling a lot and I don't want to lose it or attract thieves." Elide winked at him. Logan struggled to keep his face neutral and tried to smile. Since the incident on the beach, Elide had demoted him from husband to fiancé.
Linsy nodded knowingly, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. She briefly looked around and then lowered her voice and said, "We've heard there's been a lot of activity in– in towns and cities nearby."
Elide opened her mouth to reply, hope rising in her eyes at the thought of any new information, anything that could point them in the correct direction. Before she could say anything, Lorcan smoothly replied, "Linsy, if you don't mind, I would like to speak to my fiancée privately."
For a second, Elide narrowed her eyes at him before smoothing out the lines on her face and excusing herself. The couple seemed taken aback, but Elide apologized and said she would be right back. Lorcan was almost up the stairs when he realized he should be waiting for Elide. He held out his hand to her and tried to smile genuinely.
He wondered how badly he had failed because Elide rolled her eyes and hissed at him, "This better be important." She impatiently tugged on his hand as she climbed the stairs and Lorcan followed. As soon as they were out of eyesight, she tried to tug her hand away. Lorcan's jaw twitched but he let her go.
"Elide, please. Just come to my room for a moment. I only want to talk," Lorcan pleaded. He was reduced to pleading. Begging for her to pay attention to him and not look at him with those cold eyes. Lorcan silently cursed under his breath.
Elide sucked in a breath and looked at him. Her eyes seemed to soften slightly, but her voice was low and rough when she said, "Fine. But be quick."
Lorcan didn't even know what he was going to say. He quickly led her to his room and locked the door behind them so no one would catch them unaware. Elide was taking in the appearance of his room and his sparse belongings. They all had sparse belongings, since none of them had a home anymore.
Elide perched herself on the end of his bed. And looked at him expectantly.
Heat rushed through him. He wanted to push her delicate body down onto the bed, pin her pale arms above her head and see if her blood sang, too. He wanted to see her dark hair splay across his bed, watch her chest rise as she breathed. He was halfway to the bed when he realized he was still daydreaming. Lorcan growled under his breath and hoped his thoughts hadn't been revealed. She was still angry with him, so he would be angry too.
"Fiancé?" Lorcan hissed. It was the only thing he could think to say.
"I didn't think you would mind. You were so displeased when I told you to pretend to be my husband when we were traveling with the carnival." Her eyes dared him to deny what she just said. He didn't deny it.
"You needed me to protect you, you said a brother wouldn't be enough," Lorcan replied. Elide's eyes flashed.
"Well, I don't need you to protect me anymore. Manon taught me how to protect myself." Elide stood up and lifted her chin defiantly. "You don't even have to watch me anymore. Just go away, go do whatever it is you want to do. I'm sure there are plenty of women who would be happy to warm your bed." Elide strode to the door to leave.
Lorcan grabbed her wrist and pinned it against the door firmly in a flash. Gods, she was so aggravating. He could smell her cinnamon–and–elderberries scent, and his eyes flicked to the tendrils of hair that had wound their way out of the bun on her head. His nostrils flared.
Fear briefly flashed through Elide's eyes, before fierce anger replaced it. "Let me go," she hissed, struggling to pull her wrist away. Her other hand went to push his chest but he caught that wrist too, and pushed her carefully against the door. She felt so gods–damned breakable. He hadn't said what he needed to say, hadn't said anything at all but he couldn't let her go. He didn't know what his feelings were or how he felt but he knew he needed to say something, anything. Maybe it was because he was no longer under the blood oath that he felt all these strange emotions, that he couldn't sort out the turmoil in his heart. Her chest was heaving against him, such a distraction.
"Elide, I am sorry." Before he could be distracted by her rosebud lips and anything else, he opened his mouth and words tumbled out. "I was foolish, so foolish. I thought– I thought we were being attacked and that Maeve would save you–"
"Why would you think that? You betrayed her first!" She hissed at him, still struggling against his hold. His grip loosened slightly. She avoided his gaze as a hint of color creeped up her cheekbones. He noticed how close he was standing to her, and he took a small step back, relaxing his grip.
"Tell me, Elide, tell me what I have to do so that you won't hate me. Tell me how I can make this better," Lorcan said, his voice low. Pleading again. "After Maeve stripped me of the blood oath, I've been…" He struggled to find the pitiful, pathetic words. Lost. He had felt lost. He was lost, although he couldn't force himself to say it. Lorcan's onyx eyes searched hers, searching for something other than the anger and hatred he saw in them whenever she looked at him after he had gotten Aelin captured. He had put them all into this situation, after all the armies Aelin had called to her aid.
Elide had understood without hearing Lorcan finish his thought. She had felt the vast well of grief and self–loathing open up within him as he searched her eyes. She could feel his regret, and she hated herself for pitying him. For wanting to open up to him and wanting him to open up to her. But gods–damned Lorcan had gotten her queen captured, and as much as she wanted to forgive him, it wasn't time. And he had still protected her these past few days, even though she had been ignoring his sorry arse.
"Lorcan, I just need… time." Elide licked her lips and wriggled her right wrist free from his grip, looping a strand of dark brown hair behind her ear. "With everything that happened on the beach… I thought you were going to die. I was ready to die, with you, for you, all I know is I couldn't bear to watch. And I thought… I thought you felt the same towards me." Elide swallowed. She hadn't meant to sound so hurt.
Lorcan's eyes flickered to the scar on her arm, and she saw the muscles in his jaw clench tightly.
"I will never willingly put you in harm's way." Lorcan's voice was rough as he gently tipped her chin forward and met her gaze. "Never again. That was the blessing Mae- she gave me." Elide flinched slightly when Lorcan started to say Maeve's name again. The hurt he saw in her eyes was unbearable, and he knew it was all his fault. It was his fault for thinking he knew better, thinking he was anything but the naïve fool that Maeve had exposed him to be.
Elide swallowed again. "I should go now." In a flash, she slipped out the door. He could hear her breathing on the other side, and then she quietly went upstairs.
Blood was roaring in his ears, pounding in Lorcan's head. He was angry at himself for being such an idiot, for trusting rutting Maeve. He would gut her himself for using Elide as a negotiation tool and for stripping him of the blood oath so cruelly after centuries of being her faithful slave. Lorcan wanted to destroy something. He occasionally snarled as he paced the floor for a full minute, trying to calm himself, to keep himself from crumbling everything to dust. The inn would just be kindling, and he didn't want to pay for damages.
He slung on a jacket to hide his weapons from view and was halfway out the door when he heard a soft cry of pain from upstairs. Gods–damn it, he was such an idiot. In his blind rage, he hadn't thought to be vigilant, had thought that pulling his magic away from Elide was respectful. Dark magic spread from Lorcan in every direction as he headed up the stairs. He should have known better, he should have known that he couldn't leave that gods–damned, infuriatingly breakable woman alone by herself.
