December 16, 2023 - Abyssinian Wheatear (Oenanthe lugubris) Found in parts of eastern Africa, these wheatears live in rocky habitats with scattered vegetation. Little is known about the details of their diet and foraging behavior, though they probably feed on insects. They build cup-shaped nests from rootlets, grass, and sometimes hair, in crevices in rocks, banks, and stone walls. Both parents feed the chicks, sometimes assisted by males from the previous brood.

Wheatears, having a migration pit stop on Bardsey island in Wales.
They are cute little hoppy things with a distinctive white inverted T shape on their rumps, only visible in their small bursts of flight. This is where they get their name: 'wheat' from 'white' and 'ear' from... well, you know. Not their ears.
Female on the left this time, male on the right.

It's a bit of a dreich afternoon. This morning wasn't, though :) I snatched an early jaunt up West Lomond before the rain came on, and there were quite a few other people doing the same. A nice and simple out & back. I did hope I might have heard my first cuckoo of the year in the treeline above Falkland Estate but nope. There were however lovely wee wheatears hopping from rock to rock, and a couple of ring ouzels! The latter is a bit of a concern, conservation-wise, as its population has plummeted in recent decades. Ring Ouzels look a bit like a blackbird but with a fetching white collar, and make a sound similar to the stonechat i.e. the sound of two pebbles being knocked together :) Wasn't expecting that today. And if I'm honest, I wasn't expecting such a fine sunny morning either!

Original Wheatear sketch | Limited edition fine art print from an original drawing. My sketches start life as hand-drawn graphite images made on cartridge paper. I often work on these with charcoal, oil pastel or Caran d'Ache to create the look I'm after. The artwork is then scanned and finessed digitally ready for fine art printing. This process often referred to as Giclée printing uses the highest standard of printing methods to give gallery quality results that maintain all the details of the original sketch. The graphite pencils I use are Faber-Castel, the oil pastels are Sennelier and the china-graph is Caran d’Ache. The inks are pigment based archive quality (100years+). The heavyweight specialist papers I use are of the best professional quality having a wonderful surface designed specifically for fine art drawings and illustrations. Very limited editions with only ten per size printed. All artwork is signed and includes a certificate of authenticity. The A5 are 5.8" x 8.25" (14.8cm x 21cm) The A4 are 8.25" x 11.7" (21cm x 29.8cm) The A3 are 11.7" x 16.5" (29.8 cm x 42cm) The A2 are 16.5" x 23.4" (42 cm x 59.4cm) Frames not included in price. Free shipping on artwork to UK destinations.

August 18, 2022 - Mourning Wheatear (Oenanthe lugens)
Found in parts of northern Africa and the Middle East, these wheatears live in rocky areas, deserts, and grasslands. Foraging on the ground, they eat arthropods and some plant foods. They build flat cup-shaped nests from dry grass, stems, roots, and hair in cavities in banks, walls, and in or under rocks. Females lay clutches of three to six eggs.

13/04/2024-A fine summer plumage Black-tailed Godwit, yellow dung flies, bluebells, Eider and views on a brilliant afternoon at Lymington and Pennington today.
My first bright Wheatear and Whitethroat of the year and also my much anticipated first Swallows of the year floating through the breezy air taking my year list to 154 were other highlights today. Also good to see today were many Sand Martins, Skylark, Buzzard, Reed Bunting, Greenfinch, Shelduck, Pochard, Mediterranean Gulls, so many Avocets which it was a phenomenal experience to see, Lapwings, Redshank, Peacock butterfly, my first clover and plantain of the year, lesser celandine, buttercup, greater stitchwort, cow parsley and red deadnettle.
