Things that went through my mind while watching this episode:
--This episode has me shook.
--Like, I truly did not remember the Hand Demon being so utterly, but fittingly horrific.
--But we'll get to that.
--First!! Urokodaki-san!! He showed up to observe the cut Tanjiro made in the rock while Tanjiro was still taking in what happened. This goes to show that Urokodaki had been nearby, watching over or checking in on Tanjiro this whole time, truly impressed with him. However, given Urokodaki's genuine shock at Tanjiro knowing Sabito & Makomo's names, this means that he had no way of sensing the presence of his 13 former students' ghosts.
--When first watching this series, it was in the peaceful moments of Urokodaki and Tanjiro spending time together that it dawned on me, "I really love and am very invested in this." In particular, it dawned on me in those moments how much I love Tanjiro and I've never looked back.
--We feel a lot of Urokodaki's love for Tanjiro in that time, too. For as gruff and distant as he's been, he really can't help but show his affection for Tanjiro, like he had for all his students. When it comes to plotting out the content for each episode, it was very nice to get this side of Urokodaki in the same episode as we get the tragic irony of how his love and concern for his students brought about their downfalls. Speaking of plotting episodes, the KnY manga has a nasty habit of introducing information very flashbacks mid-fight, in a way that sometimes interrupts the flow of a tense moment. While the anime has chosen to keep a lot of this, they chose to place Tanjiro's flashbacks to Urokodaki's explanations in the context of Tanjiro's real time experience, which I find a very good choice.
--Speaking of choices which were made... um, wow. There were a lot of choices made about the Hand Demon. We'll get to him.
--At the Final Selection, we get Tanjiro's first experience using actual Breath Technique, and Ufotable shows us with style how they're going to be doing things on this show! They chose a particular way of doing Water Breath, and it works because they lean into it, even for these first low-level demons Tanjiro faces.
--But don't relax yet, Tanjiro! Don't relax yet, viewers! We have terror looming.
--Oh man. OH MAN. The emphasis they put on Tanjiro's gut reaction to the Hand Demon. The boy is shook, rightfully so.
--AND THEN IT ATE THAT OTHER KID. OH MAN. OH MY GOSH. THE MANGA DID NOT GO THAT FAR.
--Phew... okay, so. Gotouge was still a novice mangaka at this point. There was a lot of heart put into this Final Selection arc, which is why it works. The Hand Demon has a brilliant character design, which is why it doubly works. But The action... well, it's functional. It serves its storytelling purpose. It show mechanics. Yes. It did what it needed to.
--But Ufotable read this and was like, "hmm, yes. We got you. We see what you were going for. And we are going to pick apart every action line and sound effect, read in between every panel, and animate the innate horror of this creation."
--"And we're going to get Koyasu Takehito to voice him."
--Like, seriously. I hope that when Koyasu was offered the chance to take a break from all his conventionally (or exceptionally) attractive character roles, he leaned deep into it and had a blast.
--Just... wow. Since I usually turn to the manga for art and fic reference, I had forgotten just how far the anime went on details of how the Hand Demon moves, grows, and eats. Since I haven't watched this episode since becoming such a deeply invested fan, it made my jaw drop as it hit me that this is what Sabito and Makomo suffered.
--On that point, something which is implied well enough to be a sound theory, but never really proven is how tied ghosts are to the demons which ate them. Douma implies that his victims live forever inside him, and even in this episode, Urokodaki very blatantly states that demons gain strength and grow bigger based on each human they consume, and there is a display of that in how the Hand Demon gets more engorged after he swallows that other nameless boy whole. This leads us to understanding that Sabito & Makomo's bodies contributed directly to what the Hand Demon is now, but what we don't know is how trapped their souls are in what used to be their own cells.
--Which led me to wonder... they're metaphorically talking to each other back on Mt. Sagiri, but they're ACTUALLY WATCHING THE BATTLE UNFOLD FROM WITHIN THE HORRIFIC MASS OF DEMON CELLS THEY'RE STUCK IN, AREN'T THEY
-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
--And it's for reasons like that which make me encourage people to rewatch this episode if they've forgotten just what a big and horrible foe the Hand Demon was. Sorry Swamp Demon, you'll have nothing on this guy. Yahaba, Suamaru, you guys have troublesome techniques, but you're small fry compared to this guy. If Muzan bothered caring whatsoever about his demons locked away on Mt. Fujikasane, he'd probably be pleased with this demon having so aggressively survived and eaten people with such vengeance. His physical development is inelegant, but it displays his force of will in as core a way as Muzan engorging his flesh in a desperate attempt to escape the sun.
--Also, let's talk about that moment Tanjiro got hit with one bad punch and got knocked into the tree and flattened until Shigeru woke him up. We know that Tanjiro is going to go through much, much worse later on in his demon slaying career, but to date, this is the heaviest hit he's ever suffered in his life (and he's already been though a lot of hard knocks). It dealt THAT MUCH damage to his forehead (you know, TANJIRO'S forehead) that it fundamentally activated a change in the shape of his skin. Know what we do now, we could say that this was a turning point in starting to bring forth the mark, like Tanjiro subconsciously needed to draw from some of the same sources of strength in order to have the physical strength to defeat the Hand Demon.
--Like... seriously. We can never forget just how horrific and powerful this demon was. While the demons of Mt. Fujikasane were meant to have been weak demons that have only eaten a few people and could, in theory, be defeated by beginners, the Hand Demon was a terrifying anomaly. Had the Corp known that one of the demons there had gotten, erm, "out of hand," they probably would had sent a more experienced slayer to do away with it, but there were never any survivors to tell them so.
--Also, THIS IS STILL ONLY TANJIRO'S FIRST NIGHT.

OK, read all Hell's kitchen Paradise 127 chapters and I loved it! Before I go into spoiler-y territory I do rec this manga but only if you are 18+ and you like mangas like chainsaw man or dorohedoro because of the level of violence, body horror (or maybe gore?) and the heavy themes, do check before reading!
SPOILERS:
Yuzuhira/Sagirin are in love and traveling japan together🥰🥰 Anyway saw that is an anime coming so I'm hoping their few interactions aren't cut out for more boobas.
I love that gabimaru's love for his wife was constant throughout the series but also that it was the source of his power in a sense and the reason why the baddies were defeated. It was sweet.
The aza brothers! OH BOY if we talk about character arcs these two get the prize, the sanemi/bakugou looking brother "ending" was perfect ( specially him apologizing to his parents for all his sins BUT he knew he was always a good big brother, UGH MY EYES) thats why I'm not so sure about the actual ending, like the emotional weight of it was partly gone bc he "survived". Talking about sanemi (kny manga spoilers), Chobe's arc is what I wanted for sanemi and why his arc with best boy genya doesn't feel as satisfying as chobe and toma's! we are to believe that genya is super important to sanemi but we barely see that unless is on flashbacks when they were much younger 🤷‍♀️ Also chobe may look like sanemi and bakugou with a little of their explosive nasty personality but his heart is like choso's🥺
My little nitpicks are sagirin could've have more cool moments if she was "more powerful than gabimaru" . And if you are showing this amount female presenting nips show me the other types of nips. There is a lot of religious mashups that truly never get into too deep which is a shame but understandable since the story is short (tho 127 pages of this quality art isn't a small feat).
The other characters: I would've wanted more of shugen specially his relationship with sagiri, he is the reason why the only two women of the clan are samurai. Plus his relationship with others that aren't all in flashbacks but I guess you weren't suppose to get attached to the character? Fuchi is the only death I dislike, weird little science dude would've given so much contribution to society. For Shion im sooooooooo relieved his ending isn't marrying nurugai djflk, he's too cute to turn into a creep. I guess I didn't expect much from this other than to be fun! Which it was and that's why I'm ok with ignoring some bs😂. I don't take it too seriously because it doesn't had the space to do that or go in depth as much, and I think sometimes stories CAN be just fun not every story has to be deep or wrinkle your brain.
Anyway read Hell's Paradise, or wait for the anime? Either way its on manga plus app and 9 out of 13 volumes are in comixology! Thanks for reading my ramblings🥰

this summer, me and my brother watched four whole shows. at long last, here is my comprehensive review of all of them!
in the order we watched them, these shows were:
avatar the last airbender (ATLA)
mob psycho 100 (MP100)
demon slayer / kimetsu no yaiba (KNY)
fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood (FMAB)
they were all very very good!
i’m not going to try to rank them, but, as is probably obvious by the state of my blog, my favorite was FMAB :) if i had to pick a least favorite, then, it would probably be KNY—not by any fault of its own, but just because it didn’t appeal to me quite as much as the others. still a very good show!
i will review each show by:
giving a quick plot-based pitch discussing the show’s hook or appeal
discussing one element that i believe it does better than any other show on this list—in other words, a quality that i think it stands out for
discussing one element that didn’t appeal to me or that i had issues with—a criticism
putting forth my favorite character and favorite episode or arc, just for funsies
including various other commentary. mostly positive, as, again, i did really like all of these!
(i’ve tried to make this whole thing free of specific spoilers, but if you’re planning on watching any of these shows and want to go in more-or-less blind, it might be best not to read this.)
first of all, i’d just like to discuss all four of these shows as a whole! it was definitely interesting watching one after another and noting similarities between them.
all of them have siblings in them! which is, perhaps, fitting, as i watched them with my brother
two include a pair of siblings in which one has powers and one doesn’t (at least at first), and part of the narrative involves getting better at using those powers (ATLA, MP100)
two include a narrative centered around a pair of siblings and something tragic that happens to them, resulting in the older one being traumatized and forced to train to become a soldier, and the younger one turning into something (arguably) inhuman. the protagonist’s major goal is to return his younger sibling to the way they were before (KNY, FMAB)
ATLA and FMAB are both fantasy political dramas, which is rapidly becoming a favorite genre of mine
most of these are historical, or historically inspired in some way, which is interesting!
all of these shows are really really good at character building. all the main characters are interesting and complex, and the relationships between those characters are similarly nuanced and very well written. they make you really care about both the protagonists and the side characters!
Tumblr media
avatar: the last airbender
pitch: as the ever-growing imperial force of the fire nation threatens the earth and water nations, a kid from the long-lost air nation turns up and it turns out he can control all four elements and he has to save the world and all that. sorry i tried to write this pitch like five times and realized that well at this point i think everyone reading this will know the plot of avatar
stands out for: avatar has possibly the best worldbuilding i have ever seen in a show—it takes the time to introduce us to so many places and aspects of its world, both explicitly and subtly. the main highlight of this is the magic system. by creating a magic system based in body movement, the process of using magic and learning to use/control it better becomes immediately obvious to the viewer. combine that with the philosophy behind each type of bending and the way that characters take bending inspiration from types different than their own, and you’ve got a system that is complex, flexible, believable, internally consistent, and just plain fun! it makes action sequences a blast. i especially liked the moments when bending was stretched to its limits in totally logical ways (metalbending, bloodbending). not to mention the way that bending is seamlessly integrated into the world of avatar! the example that comes to mind is the earthbending-powered transport system of omashu. a whole essay could be written on that topic alone!
criticism: i know this is a sentiment shared by many people, but the first season was kind of boring to me. some of the humor and the plots felt hit-or-miss. of course, it needed to take that time to establish the world, and it does a great job of doing that. it just didn’t hook me until the second season.
favorite character: i love toph she’s so much fun :) iroh is a close second! and zuko is great, too, of course
favorite arc: i loved ba sing se a ton, especially the episode when they get there and everything feels off. it felt so resonant with real life, in a very fun way. there’s a reason “there is no war in ba sing se” is a meme…
other commentary: what can i say? it’s a classic for a damn good reason. the plot is tight, and it does a great job raising tension and introducing new elements and twists. i also love the care put into the antagonists, especially azula, who has a fascinating arc.
Tumblr media
mob psycho 100
pitch: a middle schooler and a charismatic con artist team up to smite ghosts using extrasensory powers. thing is, only the middle schooler actually has ESP, and it happens to be really, really powerful. can he navigate the difficult world of middle school while also getting a better grip on his powers—and his bottled-up emotions?
stands out for: the way that MP100 uses animation is excellent. it takes a little getting used to but it’s just so fun, combining all sorts of different techniques to create an experience rich with drama and emotion. it’s playfully exaggerated and self-parodying, adding to the show’s fantastic sense of humor as well as its truly emotional moments.
criticism: the way that ESP works makes suspension of disbelief tricky. it’s a great feat to introduce a character who is essentially all-powerful and still make them interesting (even in fight scenes), but at times (especially the second season finale) it felt like a magic system with too much breadth and too few limitations. this might just be my bias for hard magic systems talking, though.
favorite character: other than mob and reigen? probably teru. he’s loads of fun AND all the season 1 episodes he’s in slap hard
favorite episode: the one where the girl asks mob out on a date as a dare.. it’s super cute
other commentary: thank you mp100 for being the leftist propaganda we all deserve <3
in all seriousness though, this show is a blast!! it does a great job switching between silly and serious in the blink of an eye. i also really appreciate the way that it balances comically huge stakes with much smaller, more personal stories. for example, the conflict between mob and reigen in season 2 is especially well-done. in general the emotions just feel so real? characters whose emotions tie into their powers are an excellent trope, and mob is a wonderful protagonist who exemplifies this really well.
finally, on a more critical note—there are so many characters in this show! and it feels like only a handful are fleshed out? however, this may be due to the fact that it’s not an adaptation of the entire manga (which i haven’t read). there’s a lot more to go! more characters to dive into! so i probably shouldn’t try to critique it in the same way as a finished work.
Tumblr media
demon slayer / kimetsu no yaiba
pitch: demons kill a boy’s family and turn his sister into a demon, so he decides to try and figure out a way to turn his sister back into a human. what follows is a demon-killing adventure that’s in equal parts harrowing, poignant, and hilarious.
stands out for: there’s not much i can say about this other than “please just take a look” but the art and design is phenomenal. it does a much better job of integrating 2D and 3D than a lot of other animated series, and overall it is just so so pretty! all the character designs are complex, memorable, and fit the characters perfectly. the color choices are interesting and satisfying. i also really like the sound design? not often that i notice that in a show. i’ve watched so many KNY amvs by now lol it’s just amazing animation
criticism: the narration style leans too heavily towards tell instead of show. this is mostly an issue with the first few episodes, but i got super annoyed by how much the show would narrate every single one of tanjirou’s thoughts instead of letting us infer those thoughts through his actions and reactions—the latter, i think, would have been more emotionally impactful. sometimes silence speaks louder than words! tanjirou was also not the world’s most compelling protagonist in my opinion, though i think that mostly has to do with my own tastes.
favorite character: *holds up zenitsu* I Just Think He’s Neat. i actually kind of lost it when he first used his powers, like… damn i love characters with weird relationships with their magic like that. i also think the narrative about how having a solid foundation is sometimes more important than knowing a ton of different moves was really powerful. and he’s just funny! pathetic boy i love him
favorite arc: really just the whole spider arc. fucked up man… i love it. they pulled off that last twist so well, and all the family stuff was so weird and complex and emotional…
other commentary: it’s just a really solid and very well-written show! the team of tanjirou, zenitsu, and inosuke is so much fun… bro bonding :) i also quite like the horror elements; it’s fucked up but in a good way. finally, this is very specific, but the demon that can alter buildings/rooms through drumbeats? appealed to me very much. it’s a cool and unique power!
Tumblr media
fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood
pitch: two kids do some fucked up alchemy and end up getting parts of their body stolen by god. now they’re on a quest to get their bodies back, but find themselves wrapped up in crazy government conspiracies and alchemy more powerful than they ever could’ve imagined…
stands out for: plot. by this i mean less overall concept (though the overall concept is pretty great too), and more that the pacing and progression of the story is extraordinarily tight. for the most part (the first few episodes are a little weak but i’ll let it slide), it does an excellent job establishing its premise and building on it logically, adding layers and layers that extend naturally from what we already know. everything has a reason for happening; everything is revealed in good time and all the twists are super satisfying. there’s great balance between exciting moments and quiet moments. it’s just very good at being a story!
(fun fact: i’m reading the manga right now and so far it’s even better paced than the show, which is super interesting! it’s especially good at how it lays out pieces of the backstory and then fills everything in later in a really satisfying way.)
criticism: this is incredibly specific but it’s what comes to mind as something that bothered me: winry’s character arc was really disappointing. for most of the series she’s a pretty strong character, but in the end it feels like she gets pushed aside, defined only by her relationship with ed. what happened to her wanting to take action more? that was a specific desire she expressed—wanting to be less passive! since she’s such an important character, i wish she could have had more presence in the last season other than as a sounding board for the elric bros’ emotions. (even though her one scene in the last episode was really good and emotional…)
favorite character: other than the elric bros, absolutely ling. he fits into multiple of my favorite character archetypes (fun, silly, bastard, gets possessed…) and he’s just overall a delight. plus his relationship with greed is really really good. bro bonding at its peak!! (my other favorite is pride. i will not say why because spoilers. but if you know me.. you know)
favorite episode: this is really really hard to choose but i’m gonna go with envy’s death because. holy shit.
other commentary: i’m a really big fan of the complex and nuanced way in which FMAB breaks down militaristic, imperial regimes from the inside. many of the characters have done awful things, and the story forces them to grapple with that and accept that all they can do now is be better in the future. the moral complexity is just really good! characters with flaws—we love to see it!
finally, parts of this story seem so so catered to Me Specifically that it’s no wonder i got so into it. like just the entire premise? the way that so much of the conflict is built out of identity crisis and exploring the nature of consciousness and human vs inhuman? beautiful. i love ed and al so much
*
if you made it all the way to the end, thank you so much for reading!! glad to have finally gotten this done (3 months late…) and put all my thoughts down. i hope this inspires someone to try watching one of the shows i discussed!

Your analysis on shigaraki's worldview is 😍😍😍. Who's your fav bnha character btw, and what kind of manga are you into? (i mean as in genre, but my phrasing is terrible at times so idk how to put it all in the last sentence)
My favorite manga in the whole world are the manga that run in Weekly Shonen Jump. I read almost everything that runs in the magazine from week to week. I know that’s not technically a genre, but let’s not arguen semantics.
And now because no one asked for it, my opinion on all of the manga currently running through Jump that I read.
Tumblr media
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba usually manga in shonen jump slowly get worse over time as they try to stretch their stories out, but Kimetsu no Yaiba is a story that continues to develop on itself and improve the longer it runs.
The art is phenomenal and has a good balance of when to be silly and when to be drop dead gorgeous. It’s more of an ensemble piece tied together by a big brother trying to save his little sister, and because of that almost every character Tanjirou interacts with is fun and really immediately attention grabbing.
It’s also a pretty heavy story that deals with death, grief and loss and trying to find life beyond a world that has suffering like that. I’m actually planning to make some meta of it soon, especially with the interactions between Domi and Shinobu. My only real complaint is that it’s deep but not too deep. Usually the demons are always bad and the demon slayers are always good in the end, even if sympathy is expressed for some of the demons. Once again though it does so well in the technical aspects of telling the story it wants to tell.
Tumblr media
My Hero Academia it’s pretty obvious that I like it. The biggest draws for me are the art style and the characters, specifically the villains. Also the idea of a reverse X men world where what are basically the mutants now outnumber normal people and dominate society is a fantastic idea for world building with a lot of options.
I’ve actually followed Horikoshi’s work for a long time. His two previous works, Oumagodoki Zoo and Barrage both ran in Shonen Jump for a short time before they were cancelled which I find really unfortanate because they both had a lot of potential as well.
I love both the hero kids and the villains, though sometimes I feel like the villains are more connected to the central conflict of the story than the heroes. It would be nice to see Deku evolve a more radical philosophy then just wanting to save people right in front of him, or protecting the status quo. The heroes should ideally act in response to the villains to create a better world and resolve a problem the villains brought up, but if say the League of Villains were wiped out now another League would be created later because the central problem of the story has not been dealt with.
Tumblr media
Dr. Stone this is a series that almost got cancelled, but was saved by a main character switch. Senku is really likable and unique as a character, kind of a mad scientist archetype who turns out to be the good guy and the hero of the story.
Tumblr media
He reminds me a lot of Yoichi from the writers previous work, Eyeshield 21. In that they’re both laughing mad eccentrics who seem like they have little scruples for how they use and treat other people, and yet are surrounded by friends and act as the leaders of their team. They also both have a tendency for strategy over brute strength and like to outwit their opponents.
The only thing I can say about Dr. Stone is that while the characters are a fun little group of oddballs, they rarely get any deeper than that. The most interesting thing is still figuring out the central mystery of the world and what happened to turn everybody to stone, which is why having Senku as a main character was a really smart move on the series part.
Tumblr media
Yozakura Family This is a new series that I actually really like and hope beats canellation at the two week mark. It’s kind of your basic romantic comedy characters get married in the first chapter promise, but also there’s some really strong character writing with the older brother. He’s one of the few examples of the obsessive and overprotective brother type that was portrayed as actually abusive and damaging for seeing his younger sister that way.
The premise also reminds me a lot of Katekyo Hitman Reborn, just suddenly getting sucked into the underworld of spies and crimminals when you’re an unlucky loser with no social skills. If the character writing is as strong as it is for the brother I can definitely see a lot of improvement and staying power.
Tumblr media
The Promised Neverland the smartest written series in Shonen Jump write now with the best ideas. The Promised Neverland is all about theme, theme, theme, theme, which is why someone like me who devours stories for their nutritious value and content loves it.
While there are only about three major characters with arcs that matter to the plot, Norman, Ray, and Emma they are some of the deepest characters in shonen jump currently and the complexity of their relationship and the way they all foil each other is superb.
It’s a story about children trying to escape a neverland where they can never grow up, and live in a world that never wanted them alive. Not only is it just about them though, it’s also about adults who are still inside the system and gave up at one point or another and decided to just live in the evil world rather than change it. It’s a deep story but it’s also undeniably shonen jump, the central theme is about not giving up even in a world that is determined to deny your existence.
Tumblr media
Act Age If you’ve read Chihayafuru this manga has a lot in common with that, because both of them are about very singleminded girls with complex emotions that they themselves don’t understand, finding themselves completely enveloped in a niche hobby to the point of obsession.
Act-Age is a story that’s primarily about storytelling and the nature of stories themselves, with each arc focusing on an adaptation of either a movie made up for the sake of the story or a pre-written play ie, Journey to the West, Night on the Galactic Railroad. However, it’s also bout the nature of stories, as understood by the perspectie of an actor.
There are only a few major characters but they all get intensely developed in their arcs. My absolute favorite relationship is that of the main character, quiet on the surface but with deep emotions that she uses for her acting talent with her rival an actress that’s much more like a pop star or idol. Rather than having deep talent she instead uses her ability to read people to appeal to them. She is cheerful and lively on the surface, but empty inside. The way they envy each other and learn to grow from each other because each of them has what the other one desires.
Tumblr media
Jujutsu Kaisen reminds me of really early bleach that was just Ichigo and his teenage friends fighting Hollows. This is one of the manga I definitely reccomend, because it’s one of the lesser known manga in jump currently. The art style has this scratchy look about it which really adds well to the horror aspect of the series. It’s a demon fighting anime with some of the best demon designs, more attention is put on making them look grotesque and scary then in series like KNY where the demons for the most part are pretty good looking still.
The main trio is very solid, a reckless idiot who swallowed a cursed finger in the first chapter and is continually dealing with the consequences of that, the shadowy, quiet type cool headed one who almost never talks about his past or his true feelings on the matter, and between them the cheerful girl whose a tad on the merciless side.
Not only are the characters good, but it’s one of the few series where the fights and lore are super interesting. Rather than dealing with demons directly Kimetsu no Yaiba style we deal with curses, which are generated from the human subconscious.
For exmaple one of the villains Mahito is the embodiment of the fear humans have for other humans, that is the anxieties of life, and the fear and suppressed feelings that go hand in hand with humanity. Because that he’s much like a child curse quickly learning and progressing with a human intelligence.
Tumblr media
The fights, the powers of characters, they’re all used to further develop a really interesting world of curses and the people who live dealing with them that it feels like we’re only scratching the surface of right now and desperately makes you want to figure out the system they have in place for this entire world.
Tumblr media
Yui Kamio Lets Loose - I find it to be a really sweet romantic comedy about a stuck up boy obsessed with appearances and what other people think of him falling in love with two sides of a girl, the uncontrollable Yui that beat him up and constantly gets into fights and trouble, and the perfect demure girl who can only ever be helpless and kind and needs to be protected. It has a feel of a lot of classic 80s high school romantic comedies. The only real problem is that it needs to acquire a plot fast, because it’s at risk for cancellation which makes it hard for me to get invested in a series that might end soon.
Tumblr media
Double Taisei - One of those shonen manga that had a really interesting beginning chapter, but then failed to do anything with it. I think it would work well as a character piece between two personalities who act like brothers in the same body, but the characters aren’t strong enough quite yet to work that way. I do like the character design…
Tumblr media
Tokyo Shinobi Squad - It looked like a ripoff at first but the main character is actually fairly different from Naruto, and the manga itself is uniquely its own thing. I just hope it learns to utilize it’s cyberpunk setting better, because ninjas fighting in a cyberpunk dystopia is a very tropey premise and the story needs to utilize those tropes in order to work. I do like the fact that the main character starts out pretty powerful so it’s not a typical shonen formula about a main character slowly learning to gain power, instead it’s him taking in and being responsible for a kid.
Manga I don’t read - One piece, Yuuna of the Haunted Hotsprings, Chainsawman, Samurai 8 the tale of Hachimaru, Beast Children, Miitama Security Busters.

Rhetorical Ink Reviews - “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba” Season 1 - Episodes 1 to 5
**SMELLY SPOILERS BELOW**
As I struggle to fill the hiatus Haikyuu!! and My Hero Academia have left behind this spring, I keep seeing a lot of people losing their minds over Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -- seeing as how I saw the manga just ended, I figured it’d be worth a viewing!
I was going to write a full review of Season One, but then, five episodes in, I thought -- oh no, this going to need more than just a Top Ten Thoughts for the whole season. So, that being said, I’m splitting my review into five parts! Here is Part One:
My Top Ten Thoughts on Demon Slayer: KNY, Season 1 - Episodes 1 to 5:
Tumblr media
10. Episode One, “Cruelty,” really sets so many things perfectly. The opening alone showcases its gorgeously unique animation style, the heart of the main character Tanjiro, and the direness of the situation he is in. Despite the instant parallel I saw to Luke Skywalker when he goes home to find his aunt and uncle murdered (though burnt to a crisp, so there’s no blood), I found an instant sympathy and connection to Tanjiro’s character and his desperation to keep his sister alive. My only question was how that gag staying on without her just taking it off...I’m guessing there’s some kind of demon slayer magic to it that will maybe get explained later?
9. I’m instantly drawn to this Giyu character, an apparent Demon Slayer, as there seems to be more on the surface with him, as it turns out there was with the wise trainer, Urokodaki, who seemingly trained Giyu. I appreciate that Urokodaki and Giyu didn’t just kill Tanjiro’s sister, Nezuko, whose become a demon, but rather actually watched over her while Tanjiro trained. My brother watching with me, kept calling her a “Gremlin,” especially when she hid from the sun, which I thought was adorable. Please don’t kill anyone, Nezuko. The foreshadowwwing...
Tumblr media
8. There’s little details that really make this show stand out to me already: The animation behind Tanjiro’s sense of “smell,” which isn’t really explained, but I’m assuming we will learn more about it later; there is surprisingly a lot of blood in this anime, but it’s not gratuitous or without reason.
In the opening episode, we’re shown Tanjiro’s hands being red and raw after burying FIVE of his family members, That was a rough scene, and then later in Episode Three, “Sabito and Makomo,” we see the opened blisters on his hands, and that visibly hurt, y’all. I know that feeling.
Also, the passage of TIME. Tanjiro trains with Urokodaki for a YEAR. And then for 6 months on his own before he Sabito and Makomo “train with him” and then ANOTHER 6 months before Tanjiro confronts the boulder/Sabito finally. That’s two years of time passing! In the first three episodes? Shippuden be damned!
Tumblr media
7. Speaking of which, let’s talk about Sabito and Makomo, because that was a twist. I honestly did not see them being ghosts coming until he cut the boulder in half -- which, can I add that anytime Tanjiro decides to grow his hair back out again, it’s fine with me. Good look, man, good look. -- and then when Urokodaki talks about not sending anymore children off to die, I was like, “Oooooh....” Which is really sad when you think about it...Giyu, what the heck? Have you been sending all these kids to train and then get killed? Hmm...
6. Episode Four, “Final Selection,” had a LOT of creepy, horror vibes to up the ante from the start: We have confirmation that Sabito and Makomo are ghosts and have been basically “Sixth Sensing” our boy Tanjiro, we have the creepy Shining-esque twins that I don’t trust for a single second, the trope of “seven days,” which is made fun of a lot in conjunction with American Horror movies, a la The Ring, a definitive revelation that as there are demons in this world, so there is a connection to a spiritual afterlife, as if ghosts were evidence enough.
Tumblr media
5. I appreciate that unlike Naruto and My Hero Academia, this initial trial to even become a Demon Slayer is pretty ridiculous in terms of difficulty. Out of twenty kids, only FOUR make it out -- the rest die. It adds actual stakes that our protagonist may not make it to even START as a Demon Slayer.
We also see a grizzly death as Tanjiro confronts a demon that we discover is the killer of Sabito, Makomo, and at least a dozen other students of Urokodaki. Even though I knew he was going to decapitate the demon, the fight itself was great to watch with the animation, but what was more compelling was the aftermath:
Tanjiro praying for the demon, as he does with others, shows its actual effect, as the human that was possessed by the demon does seem to pass on, which I really liked. It made me like Tanjiro’s character even more, too. There are times he reminds me of Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia, but really, he strikes me more like Mirio from the same show in his conviction and compassion.
Tumblr media
4. There are moments of humor in the show, mainly provided by Tanjiro, but I also feel the blonde boy that made it to the Final Selection is going to be fun, too. When they all are given “crows” a la Hogwarts, the blonde gets a little sparrow! Adorable! I also am terrified of Butterfly Girl (the quiet ones can’t be trusted) and was rolling my eyes so hard at Bakugo Jr. over here; Tanjiro, I’m SO proud of you putting him in his place!
3. Can I also say that the scene where Urokodaki dropped the wood and instantly went to hug Tanjiro as he came back made me misty-eyed? I’m only five episodes into this show and having an emotional moment? Okay...ya got me, Demon Slayer.
Tumblr media
2. And finally, in episode Five, “My Own Steel,” Tanjiro gets his newly made sword delivered. I loved how enthusiastic the swordsmith that delivered it was -- it reminded me of a cracked-out Olivander from the Harry Potter universe, down to guessing the color it would change. I thought it was VERY interesting that Tanjiro’s sword has been emitting very much “water” vibes, but his family creates fire...interesting...I wasn’t too surprised his sword was black, though, because he DID haul coal all over the place for a living. A red sword wielding water, though, would have been interesting.
1. I’m only five episodes in, but I really feel emotionally connected to the protagonist and this story so far! There’s not been much “revealed,” so I do have questions I hope are answered in the next group of episodes I watch:
- Is there a connection between the ghosts and demons -- can they see/interact with one another, or are humans the middle man, only?
- Can Tanjiro ACTUALLY save his sister? Or is this going to end how we all kind of sadly think it’s going to end?
- Will we get to see the other three inductee Demon Slayers soon? I hope.
- Who the hell was that Haku-looking dude and his sweet crow WITH THE ASCOT/SCARF? Crows with scarves, so you know he’s bougey...
- I wonder if the blonde dude’s sparrow will talk with a weird voice like the crows?
Regardless of if these questions get answered in the next few episodes, I am REALLY looking forward to continuing this series!

What I Think About “Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)”
Before I begin, everything stated in this answer is an OPINION about a FICTIONAL series with FICTIONAL characters. You’re all welcome to think differently, if you don’t want me to influence your views then don’t read.
Spoilers for anime-only watchers.
TW for: blood, gore, death, violence, bodily horror, etc. Read at your own risk.
Overall Rating (1 is lowest, 5 is average, 10 is highest):
3 out of 10
Thoughts and Ramblings:
The beginning feels very rushed. So many things happen in the first three chapters and it’s confusing. This isn’t uncommon, as new series have to get the readers’ attentions when serialized. It’s a weakness of the manga format, because if your series isn’t popular enough (as determined by weekly reader surveys) then it’ll be dropped for financial reasons.
Fantasy manga, like KnY, are often hardest hit because they have to set up not only the characters and premise, but the setting. It’s easier for series like BnHA, because the world isn’t so different from ours. The easiest would probably be something like slice-of-life that has a world exactly like ours.
Okay, maybe a cold take but: I HATE THE MAGIC SYSTEM AND THE WORLDBUILDING IS SLOPPY
It’s “soft” magic. I strongly prefer “hard” magic systems. More on hard/soft magic systems here: https://www.brandonsanderson.com/sandersons-first-law/
Breath techniques are never explained properly. We get Tanjiro using “Breath of Water” all of a sudden with no explanation of what it is or how to use it or what it does. How is it any different than swinging a sword? What are the strengths and weaknesses of different breath types?
There are ghosts when it’s convenient, but we never get an explanation of how Tanjiro can interact with them on the mountain when he’s trying to split the stone or what their capabilities are. We also never see ghosts appear like that again.
Nezuko doesn’t turn fully into a demon, but we aren’t told why. Also, the doctor, Tamayo, feels really flat and weirdly convenient - another deus ex machina.
We don’t get a full, complete, concise explanation of the demon or demon slayer rankings or powers. We get scraps of information every now and then and some of the more observant fans can keep it mostly organized.
A counterexample is Hunter x Hunter, where the magic system is well thought out, there are logical limitations, and we get summaries of the information presented.
This could be seen as an easier task, because while Gon and Killua are new to Nen and thus need it explained in great detail. But Tanjirou is ALSO new to breathing and it's just. Handwaved away.
The power rankings from opposite sides don’t make sense at all. What I mean by that is: if you look ONLY at Demon Slayers or ONLY at the demons, it’s okayish. Small inconsistencies that I can mostly overlook, but when you try to mesh them it gets super messy. See next point.
A Pillar has to fulfill two qualifications at least: Breathing specially 24/7 and killing at least 50 demons (or 1 moon). It’s said that it takes about 3 pillars to defeat 1 moon, but from what we’ve seen that ‘rule’ is broken in almost every fight. I HATE little inconsistencies like this!!
I didn’t like first arcs (Tanjiro’s family dying, Giyuu trying to kill Nezuko, the whole training and final selection arc) because they’re really rushed. We’re told two years passes in less than one chapter.
I know this is a weakness of the format, like I said before, but if I were writing I’d spend more time with Tanjiro’s family before killing them. That would give readers more time to connect with the characters, make the pacing a bit more even, and also help the worldbuilding.
The characters all feel one-dimensional at first but they get (slightly) better. Tamayo’s assistant, Yushiro, is a prime example. So is the Love Pillar, Mitsuri. I thought she was a token ‘sexual gratification’ type character at first, so her fighting and being capable was a mild but pleasant surprise.
It feels so weird. The first 50 chapters are rushed, then it slows down a bit to more acceptable territory around chapters 51-100, then the final battle begins and it’s so slow and drawn out.
I’ve said this many times before in this post, but: WE ARE NOT GIVEN RELIABLE INFORMATION ABOUT MANY IMPORTANT PLOT POINTS!
How did Nezuko not turn into a demon? What makes her specifically so special?
The first Dance of the Fire God user must have had other descendants or Tanjiro wouldn’t be around, and are we to assume that they were never attacked or turned into demons?
What does the marking do and how do you maintain it?  Why does it shorten lifespan and why are some *special* people able to disregard its effects?
How did that one Dance of the Fire God guy live past 25?
How did the Stone Pillar, at age 27, manifest a mark?
This is only a few. Also. . .
Logistics don’t make sense!!! Demon Slayers are not recognized by the government, and yet when Tanjiro and the Sound Pillar destroy about 2 blocks of the red light district nobody comes after them for fines, witnesses, court dates. . . ?
And even if the Demon Slayer Corps were a government organization, there would still be people demanding compensation for damages.
How would ANY government overlook this illicit organization that causes damage and deaths and claims that supernatural “demons” are responsible for everything? Remember, demons’ corpses crumble to dust when they die, so there’s no proof other than (supremely unreliable) eyewitness testimony!
If there are many demon attacks, how can they be overlooked? A few hundred or thousand people saying that demons exist isn’t something that can be brushed under the carpet.
How have none of the Pillars gotten seriously hurt? We’ve seen how powerful the moons are, and yet people only begin losing limbs and dying when Tanjiro comes in. Have the moons and Muzan somehow been laying low this whole time? Unlikely, seeing as demon attacks are still commonish.
Yes, there are good points: character designs, the story is pretty compelling, nice art, backstories, etc. I like how demons always se part of their human life when they’re about to die and how that gives some insight to the story. But guess what? Those things are NORMAL. I expect good character designs, backstories, etc in EVERY series I read.
And, I’d like to remind you that this is all OPINION. You’re free to go on liking the series, stuff like what I’ve said has nothing to do with whether you like it or not - heck, I like it enough. But this isn’t enough to make me adore it and want to join the fandom at all.
