Sooo, how do feel about When the Angels Left the Old Country then? I was going to check it out, but I'd love more thoughts on it.
I LOVE WHEN THE ANGELS LEFT THE OLD COUNTRY
READ WHEN THE ANGELS LEFT THE OLD COUNTRY BY SACHA LAMB
i just finished reading it for the third time and it came out in: october 2022
it's written in the tone of a classic yiddish folktale in a way that's really refreshing and fun, especially if you're used to reading books that don't have a ton going on stylistically - it's technically YA, but definitely doing something different from most other YA in terms of sheer style while remaining a very fun coming of age story for both the human and angelic characters. on a craft level it's excellent!
all the characters are super fun and interesting and well imagined - there's a pretty small core group with a larger ensemble cast, and all of the core characters are REALLY well developed - and even the minor ensemble cast each get moments of narrative insight into their lives and emotional landscapes in a really fun way. AS u May Know i am constantly writing fanned fictioneds but i actually don't really feel the need to write any for angels even tho i love it so much, simply bc i mostly just don't have anything to add!
my commentary earlier re: angels containing textual homophobia & antisemitism refers to those as intentional threats in the story, NOT like . "ohh angels is homophobic" JUST TO CLARIFY LOL!!!! it is a deeply queer and jewish book and those elements are there on purpose as part of the story being told
to try to elaborate while not totally spoiling, EYE personally really love the way in which the homophobia is present in the story - i DON'T generally want to read characters being called slurs or being violently assaulted - but i Also don't particularly like or appreciate books where homophobia just like magically isn't part of the world, esp with books like angels where it's set essentially in our universe... like, the idea of someone trying to write abt queer characters navigating the pale of settlement and ellis island and early 20th c nyc Without feeling the threat of homophobia in addition to the antisemitism and ableism and racism that are intrinsic features of those settings... would be repugnant lol
like, there's really only a couple moments where "the idea of homophobia" is specifically invoked, but its reality is BAKED into the ways the characters interact with the world and each other in a really realistic and subtle way. i think lamb does a really good job of like... making it clear what the characters have words for and what they don't. they all know exactly what antisemitism is and how it looks and functions, bc a core part of jewish tradition and celebration is literally just talking about all th times gentiles have tried to destroy jewish people. but the characters DON'T really have words and structures for how they're affected by ableism and homophobia or even really straight up misogyny - the reader is expected to do that work of identification themself in a way i really love
anyway. to anon and to anyone else who has been thinking abt reading when the angels left the old country: you should read when the angels left the old country 🫡

Thank you for the new chapter! I love how Daemon really acknowledges that he’s a fucking pervert. Straight up shameless at all times but he’s still caring in his own way. His thought process of “oh my wife is too tired with making my child, I won’t wake her up and use her hand. I’ll just do it myself and cover her with my seed” like 🤣 Also! I realized he didn’t actually sing to her, what a cheat. And is that hints of him not being able to keep up with Babey in the bedroom I see 👀
The story about Daemon’s childhood was cutee, of course he’s been a mischievous rule-breaking brat since the very beginning. Imagine one of his future kids acts just like him and everyone(esp Viserys, if he’s still alive) is just like “yeah, now you know how we feel”
For example, Daemon is in his solar working and not wearing Dark Sister. He steps out for a moment *ahem* to fck Babey *ahem* and his young child breaks into the solar, steals his sword and goes on a dragon ride. Bonus points if it’s their first solo dragon ride.
And awww Rhaenyra feeling melancholy. You wish it was you huh? Welp, it wasn’t meant to be you girlie. I hope she doesn’t feel too down for too long though cause I love Rhae too.
Stay safe & have funn!

Hey, 💎! Nice to see ya! I'm so glad you liked the new chapter, for some reason it was literal hell to write haha. Probably because I was introducing a whole bunch of plot threads, which made it difficult to navigate through some of the character groundwork I was laying. Plus I've been spiralling a little over whether or not I'm doing too much telling and not enough showing, which is such a fun exercise in insecurity!
Daemon is a grotty, bad man - and he knows it. Revels in it, even. If Babey's too tired for seks, he's gonna beat himself off and nut on her (gods, what an awful sentence). No impulse control, no "eh, let's hold off maybe?" vibes, STRAIGHT to "I'll get myself onto my partner's skin in her sleep". Jeeeeeez. As for the 'old' comment he makes, I guess I'm just really into the idea that he enjoys the fact that he's so far apart in age from her, a dirty ol' man corrupting his smol niecey. Plus, the robe and slippers was such a fucking hilarious domestic!Daemon image in my head - the sight of this man stalking down the corridors of Dragonstone at night, on his way to fuck Babey's pussy right up. Get it, you old coot.
I'm glad you enjoyed the incorporation of a childhood scene; not a lot is written about what Daemon was like as a kid other than 'he was wild' or something to this effect, so I extrapolated from that to build the scene with Jaehaerys. The old king isn't someone I've ever played around with before, so I thought it might be a good idea to bring that thread in. I hope it worked the way I wanted it to. Lol, I'm snorting at that what-if scenario. He's definitely gonna have a little munchkin like him to serve that good dose of karma, stressin' him out and all.
As for Rhaenyra, don't worry super much about her, I'd say. I've explained the general vibe of her reaction in this post, but it's not something petty and awful - I mean, it's not fair, but neither is it a "I'm gonna steal your man" angle, either. Just something I thought would be realistic in light of the circumstances she's found herself in and the fact that she's regularly seeing her uncle and her sister in happy domesticity together, when her uncle was once the only man she ever wanted.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I've yet to start on the next, but I have partially planned the sequence so we'll see how it goes!

As someone who has watched too much tv for a long time i thought i should share with the group.
TV recs for the upcoming drought:
Some of these are harder to find, the tone and quality vary wildly, they're in no specific order. I tried for not too obscure, but not too obvious. Some are still airing, some are 20 yrs old. I swear I have a life.
Slings and Arrows. Early 2000s Canadian dramedy about theatre and shakespear. Fun without being shallow, aged ok, lovely performances, great writing. nuclear grade comfort watching.
Halt and Catch Fire. 2014 - 2017, US drama. Follows four characters through the 80s tech industry. First time I got the hype around Lee Pace. S1 is ok, but nothing special, s2 is a lot more interesting but kinda goes round in a circle. S3 and 4 and some of the best tv I've ever seen.
Somebody Somewhere. This is actually a new show, but has 2 seasons out if u want a gentle but never shallow comedy. Fills my sad gay heart with joy. And if want more new tv with middle aged gays Deadloch is streaming on amazon atm.
The Expanse. Finished recently. The sci fi I've always wanted. Big and scary and wonderful and pew pew pew space battles and adventure. Balances the grim with a surprising amount of hope? Has repeated themes of redemption. Also a whole book series should u need more.
This Is England. UK drama. A film and 3 mini series set from 1983 through to 1990. Grim, sad af, also funnyand sweet? And characters that I love. The start of my undying love for Vicky McClure. Big ol CW for violence, sexual violence, and era specific racism (esp the first film). Very good, but very hard tv.
Kingdom. 2014. Can be a pain to find because so many shows are called Kingdom. About MMA fighters having drama. Also families, mental health, addiction, etc. Excellent performances. Both a very dumb and very sweet, painful show.
Animal Kingdom. Legit only watched it because I was searched Kingdom posts and AK was out around the same time. Awful family having drama and heists. Adaptation of an Aussie film into a southern California TV show. Kind of a mess? but very compelling mess.
Obligatory Succession (Kardashians for annoying people, aka me. I am the annoying person. this is my perfect tv show), The Bear, (hospo stress and family grief show) and Severance (people talk about workplace horror, but tbh it also gives big mega church horror vibes too)- new shows that live up to the hype, esp if you like sad people. I don't think they really need recs, but i really liked them.
The Thick of It. 2000s UK political comedy? Tragedy? Though these days it looking fuckin utopian compared to UK politics now. Feels a bit like a partial villain origin story for Succession. I like how sad and broken hearted it is.
Outrageous Fortune. 2000s nz dramedy that is the source of my love of family crime drama. Aged badly in places, but still very good character drama. Also, for The Boys fans, Antony Starr at his absolute best. It's a big nostalgia fest for me now. Cheryl West is a forever fav.
Justified. 2010 - 2016ish. i'm lazy i'm not looking stuff up. Yes a cop show, yes a dad show, but also rock solid tv writing and timothy olyphant in a hat. I've watched it so many times, and every time it rewards. and yes, am watching Justified City Primeval atm.
White Collar. A dumb, total fantasy art crimes and capers show. Shit, but if you need to not think and also have Matt Bomer do a shirtless painting montage for vague plot reasons then oh boy there is no other.
Being Human UK. A ghost, a vampire and a werewolf share a flat. it's sweet and agonising and 10+ years later I still love these characters so much.
Legion. 2017 - 2019. Why make tv comic adaptations that are trying for realistic and boring? When they could all be like this? Why make anything that isn't as visually interesting as this?
Doom Patrol - same for doom patrol - superhero tv that cut out the boring bits and just went for the weird and painful. I read a couple of random doom patrols years ago and was so surprised and delighted and loved them. the tv show has the same effect.
The Boys. new, and still going, as far as I know. but two kiwi leads means under nz law i have to be a fan? also it's awful, pulpy vicious popcorn viewing. appeals to the shithead 12 yr old in me. yes, it's vicious anti corporate thing is deeply ironic for an amazon show, but considering amazon saved the expanse with no sense of irony at all I figure take all their money and keep yelling.
Preacher. Another comics adaption. The Boy's weirder, less obscene, more disturbing cousin. Tulip is another forever fav tv character.
Banshee. Continuing the tradition of heth and i starting dumb Dude TV and then getting overly attached. kinda pulpy trash, but if you can stomach the violence it's surprisingly good.
All Star Treks. I love them so much. They're so weird, and uneven, and dumb, and they're all the best and I love them.
One season wonders -
Trust. about the John Paul Getty III kidnapping. also about italian countryside.
State of Play. UK. the tv show, not the film.
I dunno. I could do a whole separate post for sit coms and brit coms and the weirder, more obscure shows and movies, but ffs this is so long.

💮💮Heyyy, I have a really annoying pet peeve in romance fanfiction and wanted to know your opinion.
So I really hate it when the author goes like "x characher was in love with y character" despite them not even being friends?!?
And then they continue on to say that how x character was jealous and insecure about z character (who is presumably a hot person).
Although I don't see it as impossible, I dislike it when the pacing is too fast like, how can you be in love with someone who your not even friends with. You don't even know the person on a surface level basis, like how???
And from my understanding of love, it stems from feelings of trust, deep understanding and such, it seems like the author is describing a crush but framing it as love just cause they were too lazy to go in depth about how they were strangers to friend to pining idiots to lovers u know?
And I'm not saying all fics should go into every little detail about x and ys relationship, but at least make them friend (so the reader does the imagining) or just take the easy route and go x just had a crush. Idk am I just too sensitive abt these thing?
Alo remember to drink water and eat, our favourite author needs to stay healthy
_ stay safe, flower anon💮💮
YOOOO WE ARE ON THE SAME BIG BRAIN WAVELENGTH WHEN IT COMES TO PET PEEVES
i think this, in part, stems from romanticizing... romance, if that makes sense. as in, being enamored with the tropes of love/romance/falling in love/heavily cliched "love at first sight" premises, etc. when most of what we see in popular media just... isn't realistic or even relatable to the average person who has been in love
you can have a CRUSH on someone if you don't know them well. you can have immediate sexual or physical attraction to a complete stranger (i mean, that's what porn is, right?), you might even feel jealousy over this person being around others (this one is a toxic trait linked heavily with insecurity and immaturity, in general), etc.
but no, i don't believe in any kind of "love at first sight" mantra that many fics and headcanons unfortunately fall into because it's bullshit and not real lol. it's one thing i guess to... write about 😍😍😍 this fairytale-esque idea of just KNOWING you're in love with this person you barely know. maybe the "mysterious stranger" appeal is in there somewhere, or the "they're so cool/unapproachable/popular that i'd never have a chance, so i'll just fantasize an imaginary version of them in my head that seems like my perfect match in every way and then project that onto the REAL character/person who might not really act like that at all, destroying the fantasy"
y'know, like that!
the horrible pacing is also annoying. i mean... there's a reason my fic is fucking 500k words at this point and uhhh for 3/4 of that, "love" was not in the mix. this is kiiiiinda why scenarios where they start off as just barely knowing each other or friends-of-friends or polite coworkers or something tosses me for a loop when all of a sudden things go from 3 to 99 really fucking quickly with like, zero buildup or anticipation.
but its also people writing what they want for free on the internet that's, in most cases, completely self indulgent and less for us as content consumers and more as "i wanna write this thing" where real scenarios have little say (i have a *thing* against yandere/abuse/really imbalanced power dynamics/age gaps being romanticized and easily publicly accessible because it can and does give the wrong impression about certain situations that put irl people in danger. there's def those ppl out there who will see a stalking/obsession/controlling dynamic in a fic and think it would be awesome to have someone obsessed with them, some kind of dream come true... and like yes! those types of kinks do exist! and can happen SAFELY with CONSENTING ADULTS who are into that! but not everyone (esp minors, no offense, sorry) who stumble on this kind of thing might be able to distinguish between consenting kink and romanticizing abuse)
.... that got OFF TOPIC but its still important lkajsl;kfjaf ANYWAY-
yeah. basically, i agree and it's annoying lol but it's best to just don't read/block if you run into it and move onto things you DO enjoy reading
i did drink a lot of wooder today and i made a yummy creamy tuscan chicken recipe for dinner 😤
thanks flower anon 💮

"His story has just begun".
I think this is the problem of the way you're thinking about it. Because yes, objectively speaking he's a very fortunate person. He's portrayed as smart, wealthy and handsome. And his achievment in Karuta can be considered impressive for how long he practiced in comparison to others.
But the manga isn't about being smart in school or good looking or rich. Those things while make a person fortunate are completely irrelevant to the crux of the story and the struggle of the character. So they do not really matter.
Same goes for him being impressive. Sure he won games and reached some places, but in the matches that really matter, especially against Chihaya and Arata, he lost. And it's not a loss that sets up a comeback like it is for Chihaya and Arata. He just loses and that's it.
You can say well he can always grow. Yeah that's true but how does it matter? You say "his story has just begun" but the manga is ending. What you imagine happens to the character outside the manga doesn't matter, nor would it matter if the author tells you that this and that happens. It really doesn't matter at all. What matters is the journey that you go through with the characters and the challange that you see them go through and experience with them.
I'm not saying that this or that is bad or unfair, I'm just saying that your way of thinking about it prevents you from understanding why those people are frustrated and unsatisfied.
How does what happens outside of or beyond the manga not matter, though? Yes, the manga ends, but the character’s lives themselves don’t. That’s the point of so many stories, that the end isn’t actually the end, and is simply the route to another beginning. There’s even an entire monologue about it at the end of Chapter 165. And I completely understand why people are frustrated and satisfied, it’s absolutely a hard pill to swallow when Taichi has suffered a lot to get to where he is, but as I’ve said many times before, I feel like very few people want to acknowledge the fact that these characters are teenagers? Part of the genius of Chihayafuru as a story is that it centers on a sport played by people of all ages, so it demands you to look ever forward. Life doesn’t just stop for these people in high school. A huge part of the narrative is centered on the characters needing to decide what they want to do with their lives as they move from childhood into adulthood, so what happens beyond the end of the manga absolutely does matter with regards to the central plot, because in general it’s a story about growing up and finding yourself and maturing. You don’t have to necessarily see where they end up as adults to understand the value in them looking forward and upward in terms of their own fate.
As for the idea of “he just loses and that’s it,” would you say the same for Arata when he inevitably loses to Suou, or for Shinobu when she inevitably loses to Chihaya? Their theoretically “doomed” fates are even closer to the end of the manga than Taichi’s allegedly was, so per your premise that gives even less room for them to grow from what will be a very significant loss and blow to their psyches. But it’s still very likely going to happen, and it’s going to subsequently open Arata up to the realization that he needs help and that he needs to truly let go of his grandfather before he can ever expect himself to move forward, and open Shinobu up to the realization that she can’t survive if all she does is continue to push people who could care about her away. Taichi’s circumstances are obviously different, but it’s a similar set-up. He has to think about what karuta means to him at this point and whether he wants to define himself by that loss or continue to keep striving because his love for the game is now a genuine thing. He has to decide what the support and love of the people around him means to him and means for his own passion in terms of sport, life, academia, etc. The transition into adulthood is a very daunting experience, often because we have no idea what lies beyond that precipice once we have crossed it. The decisions we make by way of that transition are very much a gamble. But obviously. . . it’s a line that we have to cross at some point or other, and that requires anticipation and preparation. I don’t think any of the characters’ stories are rendered meaningless because we’re not necessarily going to be privy to what happens to them after they cross that line; it’s important enough that they’re thinking about what crossing the line means to them and how they want to strive and survive in the world once they’re beyond it.
#chihayafuru#*meta#like. i think people are too focused on the idea of a loss being terminal. if that makes sense#when realistically (and esp for someone these characters' age) it really isn't#and like i do get that it's hard not to have expectations esp when comparing to other sports manga#where underdogs do often win out in the end in their own way#but i feel like if you compare chihayafuru to other series you're sort of dooming yourself from the get go#bc it really does take a very different approach#one that's not necessarily all beautiful or all ugly but that's just. real#like yeah the manga is ending but esp as a series so intent on looking forward#idk how people would get the notion that what happens after is unimportant#what happens after is absolutely important. it's why so much time is put into preparing these characters for adulthood#also at least to me part of the series' realism also stems from the idea that you don't always win in high school#so many sports manga show the characters winning big by the end of high school and yeah that's great#absolutely nothing wrong with it. but is it realistic 100% of the time? not really#and ig we can agree to disagree here#but i think there's worth in a story that says sometimes you lose when you're young but it's okay#bc you can keep playing and you can win even when you're older#like maybe to some people that seems like a bleak sentiment and dooming yourself to playing with no guarantee#but again. all of the adult characters are clearly still playing for a reason and it's not just the idea of winning#it's bc they genuinely love the sport#also i realize i was sort of redundant with the closing points i made in both paragraphs of this post so sorry for that gjkfdjhlgdf#ig it's just an important point for me to hammer in lol

wu should've remained a baby: a hot take no one asked for but arguably should consider
why is baby wu so important, you ask? you guys, i hear you. i hear you in my dreams, in my shower, and in my nonexistant auditory hallucinations of people that started when we had to cut off all interactions with other human lifeforms. wasn't wu's de-aging just another temporary side effect of the hands of time arc? yes, but if they'd stuck with it and let baby wu grow at a normal speed (esp. w/o that weird remembering thing where he gets all of his memories back), it would've created great character explorations and shifted the responsibilities of the ninja (this is a take that assumes that the aftermath of the oni arc stays the same whether or not wu's a child)
picking up from the beginning, they have to take care of him and they can't just give him up to someone else. all they know is that this is a baby the SoG are after and they're some of the best protectors in ninjago, so it's up to them until they defeat SoG. plus, they can't just give him to someone else to raise even after the events of SoG, Hunted, and March of the Oni, because *someone* would realize that the baby is wu (just realistically speaking - i mean, it's ninjago) eventually, and he'll need protecting then. plus, lloyd is the only family wu has left, and his students are some of the people who knew him best.
what happens now? now, they have one member of their team that can't take care of themself. literally everyone else is trained in fighting, but not this baby! they can't go crashing the bounty into cliffs or leave literally anything dangerous unattended
since this version doesn't have the weird accelerated growth thing and most ninjago plot mysteries get resolved quickly (except for mr. e! b/c apparently him being echo isn't officially canon!), for the sake of having similar pacing, let's say they probably figure he's wu by running into scrolls/art/parchment with the whole first family (first spinjitzu master, garmadon, wu) on it and seeing the likeness, plus the kid's oni blood so they would have figured wu's disappearance and an oni baby showing up were a little too coincidental
how do the ninja deal with seeing a child grow up? a saga:
lloyd. now he gets to see a kid grow up and have the childhood that got ripped away from him, and you can BET that he's not going to let anyone take away this kid's fun. he'd have to reconsider what growing up meant to him and really come to terms with his lost childhood. plus, when wu's older and in like late middle/early high school, he'll come back with all the school material that lloyd doesn't know because he was busy saving the world and being magicked into a young adult
nya. she was really young when their parents left, so the contrast between her upbringing (kai and her on their own with only photos, stories, and a shop) and baby wu's (many people who care! there's always someone around to rely on) only to realize what was robbed from her by krux. in comparison to other character growth she would have to accomodate for the child, this introspection would probably be the most significant.
kai. similar to nya, except he's probably a lot more aware of the discrepancies between his childhood and other kids' due to him having taken on the Responsible Older Brother mantle and being that reliable person for Nya. he's going to have to learn how to control his temper and instinct to distance himself when he's emotionally conflicted. on the flip side, he'll be very protective of letting wu have a childhood, since he had to grow up so quickly.
jay. had a pretty stable and good childhood, he's probably going to be one of the best sources for the reference of "on the general, this is how people usually raise a child" he'll be the best one to understand independent streaks and the "i hate you!"s that kids do because from what we know he was one of those kids, too. however, he'll have to mature in order to take care of the kid. he's very impulsive and, at times, insensitive because of it, which isn't great when you're trying to provide a good environment to raise a kid. plus, now he has to keep a bit better track of his things and his tasks in order to manage time better now that some of it is taken up by this little wu monster.
zane. oh boy. he thought he was an amnesiac orphan for so long, only to realize that he's a robot and never was human, then figures that he had a "childhood" but was never really a child. he's going to realize how immortal and unchanging he is in relation to the ever-growing humans he surrounds himself with. since he has two senses of self: robot and human, he's just left longing for all the things he can't have: a chance to grow physically from as a defenseless, unknowing kid to a competent, knowledgeable adult. yes, he had a mental childhood from when dr. julien made him, but he realizes that it's really not the same when he sees all the quirks of humanity that surround him. he's now very scared of how long he'll live and doesn't want to outlive them. this will likely take a few months to sink in and then there would a few weeks of just Emotional Turmoil likely, this change in behavior will be noticed by cole and the team will stage an intervention with pixal as the main speaker and they'll tell them they love him and they're glad he can live long because they don't want to imagine ninjago without him. he'll end up gaining more appreciation for his robot form and have to reevaluate what it really means for him to be both a machine and a person.
pixal. she never thought of herself as or considered herself a human! she'll probably have a similar response to zane in terms of the mortality and humanity thing, but it'd be a short, several days/a week thing that she talks out with someone she trusts. she might get a little insecure about it occasionally, but it just fuels her to be the best herself she can possibly be and spend her very long life doing as much good as she can. she'll gain a new sense of purpose and also appreciation for Borg!
cole. y'all were waiting for this one, eh? well first of all we know he's a great dad, and because of his experiences with his father, he'll likely be accepting about anything little wu could possibly want to commit his life to. also, as we can see, he enjoys taking care of kids because he likes being responsible for a little person; he finds the whole thing very rewarding and since he's usually pretty chill, it'll be a chance for the others to see him in a different, more excitable but also responsible light.
but what about the ninja's parents? you say
by putting a baby into the mix, these magic primary color children's show vigilantes need to mature because raising a child can't be solved by fighting and discovering new elemental abilities. they're forced to reevaluate how stable their own upbringings were and what they can do now to make sure that the kid doesn't have to deal with the issues that hurt them most.
as a team, though, they'll have to accept that you can't stop a kid from being hurt and the most important role a guardian has is to be a mentor and a friend, not a warden. they will need to carve out time from their own personal hours to do unglamorous, routine things like pick wu up from school or watch over a screamy child.
it would make them mature and turn the team on its head in a way, resulting in them appreciating each other more and learning more about each other's pasts.
but it would also be sO CUTE. HERE ARE SOME OF THE CUTE THINGS:
zane he teaches him about how everyone's inherent differences and uniqueness are not for people to exact judgment on - they're to be celebrated. w/ sous chef lloyd and commentator cole teaching wu how to cook in the big bounty kitchen that toddler wu would need a step stool to work at properly. when they've cleaned all the dishes, zane turns to congratulate little wu, only to be met with a bubble-bearded child of mischief. oh well, everyone knows that the only way to defeat bubble-beards is tickles, so he's left with only one option.
lloyd teaching wu about garmadon and the first master. how to be an oni and all the tales that make up their history, wu's past. how the world needs balance and why life deserves protecting. he's really not even out of being a kid, himself, so he enjoys taking wu out to comic and clothes stores. he's the default chaperone and takes just so much joy out of seeing a little kid get to be themself and not worry about anything other than when they get to go on their next playdate instead of having to avoid their father before they're ready to beat him to a pulp in the final battle. the sky's as golden as the yellowed starfarer pages that little wu's clutching so close. he can't read it yet, but the illustrations are so enthralling that it doesn't really matter. wu trips and lloyd barely has time to catch him before he scrapes his knees on the sidewalk. the comic is retrived after water ninja band-aids are applied, and they continue walking. a nice, normal day - the definition of a miracle.
cole teaching wu about kindness and responsibility, compassion and empathy, forgiveness and apologies. typical good dad things. there's a faint sniffling noise from behind the door, so cole knocks on it and sits in the hallway right next to the opening. he'll open it when he's ready. when wu explains how some kids at school made fun of him because of his lack of a mom or dad, cole just hugs him until he feels all wu's weight resting on his shoulder and only hears soft snores.
nya teaching wu about patience. about how the people around you should be cherished and appreciated. also joint lessons with kai about brewing the perfect cup of tea and some with jay about mechanics. she's just always around, wu can find her and just gush about anything. she's resourceful, so if he lets an idea slip, then she might help him fulfiill it on one of her free days. nya's waiting at the kitchen table in the bounty when wu returns from school. he pulls out a stool, going over the same little tile marks again and again. she opens the tea cabinet, hands him the list in zane's neat scrawl, and lets him spoon out the leaves everyone wants. kai enters - perfect timing - and is convinced to give the kettle a little boost. seven cups of perfectly brewed tea sit out on the table, to be joined by a handle-less light blue one just a few moments later. nya starts, "so, how was your day?"
kai teaching wu about the importance of keeping your ego in check and how your insecurities don't and never will define you, no matter how much you've convinced yourself that they do. lashing out at people is never the answer. the little blacksmith shop they have set up isn't really meant for children but wu is so careful and kai is so soft. he monologues about life lessons while wu is just transfixed on the hot metal he's holding.
pixal teaching wu about how to tell stories that will get people clutching their sides and crying of laughter. she understands that people can be hard to understand, so she breaks things down for him as best as she can. sitting on the deck of the bounty, sitting on equiptment crates, and trading ideas and stories, then telling them again and again until they're conversation-ready.
jay teaches wu about the wonderful world of technology and how creativity is the root of innovation. they sit in the workshop and work on basic machines with gears and levers until it's long after dusk and their tea goes cold. jay finds technical drawings in crayon on the covers of his bed. nya annotates them. nya sits on her bed only to spring back the second she hears paper crinkling. another drawing by wu, another idea. she takes a blue pen and begins to annotate it, setting it aside when jay gets in bed. the light goes out. another day, another time: tomorrow.
the whole "the only good deaged chararcter arc that's lasted over a season is one that ends with aging them up" thing just feels like a cop-out for me, especially when all of this potential is here. anyways, if y'all have anymore comments on the importance, or lack thereof, of baby wu, let me know!

HIIIII I just binged the entire knight guard series over like ,,, 2-3 days and the fixation is buzzing thru my veins ,,,,, it's so gorgeously written and I got attached to the characters immediately, esp danny and max bc they're so . idk realistic????? if you can be realistic when you're dead and/or being hunted by a whole ass nightmare
anyway I was wondering, if pressed, who d'you think bonnie would choose between mike and danny? like in a life-or-death scenario, bc the fic brain is itching (if that's ok?) and I'm so excited for the next installment of the series
anyway sorry this is so long I just . hrgsgebjsenjee knight guard <3
Damn! That's what, 400k words or sumthin? I salute you, Anon, amazing, and I'm glad you enjoyed it :D also bless I try so hard to avoid relying on OCs (with minor exception to Max who is obv half oc/half canon) and yet people still love Danny?? I'm guessing bc of his age and, unlike Mike, he really has only his wits/friends to help him survive. Plus, it's easy to relate, his 'selfish actions' in Ghost Strings were just a misguided attempt to find something about his dad...loss is hard on all of us. Max is...Max is just, SameBro Energy. I identify with Max a LOT--the only thing Mike inherited from me is his snarky humor. Otherwise Maxxie is a lot like me. XD
Also OOF WHAT A QUESTION!! (and OFC it is okay! If you feel comfortable, I'd LOVE to read whatever you choose to share :o please link me in IM tho since Tumblr hates links )
The thing is by the time Danny is introduced Mike DOES have Goldy on his side. He even has Marion for most of GS too. After GS, he has Freddy--altho Freddy isn't as powerful as Marion. If pressed, Bonnie would likely go for Danny first and foremost, knowing that if something happened to Danny Fitzgerald he'd have failed his promise to look after one of their night guard's son. Hell, Mike himself would demand/expect the bunny to do so!
Yeah, the greater the danger, the more likely Bonnie would do whatever it took to ensure Danny would be okay--after all, animatronics can be rebuilt.
Bonnie wouldn't be happy with having to make the choice ofc--he'd likely need a lot of comfort after from Freddy and the others that he made the right decision. He knows Mike is a little unkillable, but he's not invincible. And Bonnie adores Mike, especially because he's Freddy's favorite...but Danny is Bonnie's favorite, and they have a longer history, as well as Danny being pretty young/inexperienced in the regular danger that befalls the pizzeria. When Bonnie was Withered Bonnie, and thought he would never make another child happy again, baby!Danny Fitzgerald took after his father's example and adored Bonnie. In the knight guard au, Bonnie models are often labeled as brats, tending to be kinda rude and opinionated tricksters that were designed to conect to the slightly older crowds of kiddos/teens. They can be possessive and jealous, especially that lavender wabbit who wrestles with his insecurities due to his mistreatment in FNAF2. If someone else had to protect/save Danny when he couldn't--with perhaps exception to Fazbear--Bonnie would take that very personally and feel like he let his kid down. Bonnie's are loyal to the last screw once they pick a favorite, but they can get kinda caught up and hold themselves to perhaps too high of a standard.
Hope that helped anon!

You mentioned the Cold War in relation to the origins of the damaging myth of "reprogramming torture." Is that where the trope of sleeper agents and stuff comes from? The aspect of a sleeper agent (ESP one created from "reprogramming") isn't realistic then, right? Are other kinds of things, like the hijacking from the hunger games (where Peeta is tortured and "programmed" via fear to attack Katniss on sight) realistic?
I’ve never read orwatched The Hunger Games so I’m notsure I understand this cultural reference. And I’m honestly not entirely sure where the idea of ‘sleeper agents’ comes from although I know a lot of people seemed to think they were real during the Cold War.
I think the best wayfor me to tackle this might be to step back from all the specific incidents andterms in your ask, because it seems like you’re driving at a more generalquestion about what’s possible and what isn’t. So I’ll start simple and thentalk a little bit more about the tropes connected with these sorts of ideasabout torture.
 1)     People can’t be forced to change their ideals.
 2)     Torture can’t remove or change specific/known memories.
 3)     Victims can not be put under any long term compulsion to actin particular ways.
 4)     The effects of torture can not be accurately predicted.
 5)     The effects of torture can not be controlled by the torturer.
What all of this means is that anything which relies on the idea that a torturer ultimatelycontrols how a victims acts, thinks, feels or remembers is wrong. The variation between individuals is so great that you really just can’tpredict anything useful.
Let’s go with a quickexample here, using two of the cases from ADarkling Plain which is interviews with people who survived traumaticevents varying from the Armenian genocide (the woman interviewed was possiblythe last living survivor) to Idi Amin. Now the focus of this book is how peoplerespond to trauma and how they ‘kept their humanity’.
Two women, ‘Sara’ and ‘Kimberley’talk about growing up under the Khmer Rogue. They must have been about the sameage and of similar social standing.
Sara describes feelingsof frustration, anger and hatred. She talks about feeling that the War CrimeTribunals were a farce and that the perpetrators, the communists, who causedher and her family so much suffering, should be starved and tortured andkilled. ‘Even Stevens’, she says.
Kimberley in contrastbarely talks about the perpetrators. She talks about family and the importanceof a loving supportive family. She describes how the people she loved kept heralive and helped each other recover. She talks about trauma and sadness and thebrutality of the time but gives no indication of anger or hate.
These are responses tobroadly speaking the same trauma.
And the people behindthat trauma were aiming to create a generation of young people that believed inthe ideals of the Khmer Rogue, that would act in ways the party saw as ‘good’and would preferably forget all about family and religion and capitalism. Saraand Kimberley showcase two completely different forms of failure for them.
Part of my point hereis that torturers can do exactly the same thing to different victims and getpolar opposite responses. Even when the victims are (on paper at least) verysimilar.
And since they can’treally predict or control the way victims respond in the short term there’s noway for them to be able to predict or control how victims respond in the longterm.
They could (if theybothered to read the literature) broadly predict that their victims might developPTSD or depression or anxiety. But there’s no guarantee any one victim would getthose three possible symptoms rather than say hypervigilance and pronouncedlearning difficulties. If you can’t predict how someone will respond then, wellthe idea of controlling them is a little ludicrous isn’t it?
In the same vein we know torture usually causes problemswith recent memory, but there’s no way to predict which memories would be affected. There’s also no way to predict howthose memories would be affected. We know what the common problems are(essentially losing small chunks of recent memory surrounding trauma and inaccuracies in memories of trauma) butthere’s no way to say which problems will be most prominent.
And well then we comeback to the central point that torture can not forcibly change someone’s mind.Ever.
The character youmention Peeta? If they were tortured by this Katniss then fear is a possible response as is attacking them. But it’s only one of about a dozen possible responses which also include, running away, having a panic attack (this was a torturers response tounexpectedly seeing a former victim as reported by Fanon), attempting suicide (theresponse of the victim in the previously mentioned case), or simply not recognising him at all.
There’s no way topredict which of these responses ismore likely. At all. Torture is ridiculously imprecise, which (again) makes theidea of using it as a tool to control people preposterous.
And if it can’t be usedto predict or control someone in the veryshort term (such as Peeta’s trauma-response to Katniss) then the idea of itcontrolling a victim years or decades later to trigger some kind of surpriseattack is even more bizarre and even more out of touch with reality.
These tropes are wrongand I believe they are ultimately harmful to victims because they essentiallysay that victims are dangerous, that being tortured makes them violent and thatbeing tortured makes them disloyal to their ideals. They say that torturevictims can’t be trusted, that their loyalties should be questioned and thatthey can be expected to attack their friends.
That is a pretty shittything to suggest about people who are generally already: less likely to get anyform of justice, more likely to be isolated by their community, less likely to receivemedical treatment and more likely to be disabled. It is an attack on a group ofpeople who are already profoundly marginalised.
I hope the answers yourquestion. :)

I've got less cash and less of a place to go so not the brightest of ideas Jimmy: Guess we're stuck Jimmy: Twix has a lot of love to give but fuck all cash Janis: Preach Janis: Useless sugar daddy Janis: should take a leaf out my sister's book clearly Jimmy: Bit late for that Jimmy: You're too loved up Janis: Nah Janis: Tell Twix to speak for herself Jimmy: [sends a voice clip of Twix howling] Jimmy: Done Janis: 😂 Janis: aren't you in enough trouble rn boy? don't start her off! Jimmy: She's a bad bitch Jimmy: Can't be told Jimmy: I blame her training meself Janis: Oh, Twix, where you gonna go? Think on, girl Janis: Get what you pay for Janis: You want results, you gotta cough up for my services Jimmy: You can't need new kicks already, mate Jimmy: I know you've been shopping like Jimmy: The social's got you exposed Janis: What makes you think I was paying? 🤔 Janis: Mean she didn't buy you a 'round? Shame Jimmy: I know you weren't Jimmy: Gonna pay when Twix hears about it though Janis: Sure the flat whites are already hunting her down too Janis: Awkward Jimmy: Tam's probably trying to stretch her skin into a suit as we speak Jimmy: She's gonna need a touch of your luck I reckon Janis: Not your usual type, long and lanky then? Janis: That'll be a toughie but she's nothing if not determined, bless her Jimmy: Dunno I can't remember Jimmy: 🤷 Janis: Nice Janis: Such a gent Jimmy: I wasn't trying to be Jimmy: She bumped into me and we had a dance to make it less awkward Jimmy: Far as that politeness went Janis: No need to lie 😂 I'm not the one that's gonna be crying about it Jimmy: No need to be jealous cause I'm not Janis: Whatever, weren't together Janis: not against any unwritten rules or other shite Jimmy: Still Jimmy: If you were jealous, like at Cass' party, no need to be Janis: You what? Janis: I weren't, you were being rude, that's all Jimmy: Alright Jimmy: 🤷 Janis: Always wanting me to be jealous Janis: 😒 Jimmy: Nope, just saying Jimmy: I'm that dickhead like Janis: What dickhead would that be? Jimmy: A jealous one Janis: Nah Janis: You ain't Janis: why would you be? nothing to be jealous about Jimmy: Forget it Janis: Can't say that, never works, like Jimmy: There's a first time for everything though Jimmy: Worth a go Janis: 🤷 Janis: fine, hit you with the shrug right back Janis: be like that Jimmy: I'm not being like anything Jimmy: I just don't wanna say it. Okay? Janis: Alright Janis: What do you wanna say? Anything? Should I go? Jimmy: Don't Jimmy: It's not your fault like, being too good for me and that Janis: Are you mental? What are you even chatting Janis: Fuck leagues, not even playing the same sport, and I ain't bragging Janis: For once Jimmy: Bollocks Jimmy: You're fucking stunning like, and that's just looks Janis: 🙄 Janis: Please Janis: that's the start and end of my qualities Janis: don't even make the most of that, like Jimmy: Shut up Jimmy: It isn't Jimmy: And you don't need to, that makes it worse, or better depending on the lens you're viewing through Janis: I've told you, I know what I am Janis: Ain't under any illusion I'm a catch Janis: Not fishing for sympathy like Jimmy: I'm not throwing any sympathy out Jimmy: Or compliments, just facts Jimmy: You are a catch, mate Janis: Blatantly not 'cos no one else thinks or has thought so Janis: what I'm saying, there's nothing to BE jealous about Janis: no one gunning for you 'cos I'm off the market, is there Jimmy: Only cause they can't compete with how #goals we are Janis: Yeah, that's the joke Jimmy: It doesn't have to be Jimmy: I'm not laughing Janis: No? That might've been your reality but it certainly hasn't been mine Janis: There's a reason I was a 'dyke' with no friends, and those reasons haven't disappeared Janis: You would laugh, you do Jimmy: No Janis: Forget it Janis: I'm using mine now too Jimmy: Don't Jimmy: I don't want you to forget what I'm trying to say Jimmy: Even if I am messing it up Janis: you don't have to Janis: say anything Janis: just 'cos I'm being a fucking sad case Jimmy: I want to Jimmy: There's so much shit I wanna say to you, alright? Janis: But you don't know how? Janis: Alright, Liam, fucking hell Jimmy: He was on to something Janis: Maybe Janis: 😏 Janis: You don't need this though, my shit ontop of yours, forreal, so you can forget about it, alright? Jimmy: I'm not that much of dickhead Janis: Ugh, can't you try? Janis: Always claiming the title and now where is it when we need it, eh Jimmy: Sorry Jimmy: Got no control over it like that Jimmy: Basically none around you, like Janis: You mean that? Janis: No bullshit, no bants? Jimmy: You know I do Janis: Good Janis: 'cos me either Janis: and I am jealous, really jealous Janis: and you know that too, I know Jimmy: That's why you have to hear me out Jimmy: There's no reason to be Jimmy: I swear Janis: Alright Janis: I'll try Janis: Its not personal, but I know its shitty to be on the other end of it regardless Jimmy: Good Jimmy: I can't lie now, I quite like it Jimmy: Nobody's ever been that bothered about me before Janis: Well they're thick then Janis: I Janis: I dunno Janis: Not had anyone to myself before Janis: that I wanted to keep Janis: not letting go easy, like Jimmy: Don't Jimmy: Me and you. Alright? Jimmy: That's how I want it Janis: Alright Janis: I wish we had a place to go now too Janis: Bad Janis: out of the question storming out in a teen angst rage tonight? Jimmy: It's out of the question for me not to Jimmy: I'll take the car Jimmy: Find us a place Janis: You're already in trouble I guess Janis: Lets do it Janis: I'll be waiting outside Jimmy: I'll be right there Janis: 👌 Janis: what are our chances of sneaking me in though? 🤔 seems silly to come back home only to come back tomorrow like Janis: up for the challenge?
