mdzs, and especially the cql, sit at such a unique place where they are both the prequel and sequel to themselves which makes it such a uniquely cursed work. like it has all the trappings of both in all the best (see worst ways). it starts at the end but also the end is only the beginning. half the characters that we meet (especially in the cql where the flashback starts and mercilessly does Not stop and there's this Growing Sense Of Dread the longer it goes and the worse things get) are dead from the start-they were dead before we even met them! there's no fixing what happens, no changing it-and yet because it's also a sequel to itself there is a new beginning and the story does keep going after it's done and I just think that's neat

Does Johnny have a favorite movie he's made?
Well, aside from Ninja Mime, and his tendency for extravagance and to brag about every movie he was in, Johnny personally, and secretly, prefers the movies that required authentic martial art styles and well choreographed fighting sequences, some of those are : Dragon Fist 1 &. 2, Son of Dragon Fist, Exiting the Dragon of Death, 7 Poisons, Iron claw, 24 Karate Gold. After all, he was and still is a Martial artist before he is an actor, and admittedly, his first movies weren't a hit because of his acting, he gained fame through showcasing his skills as a fighter. Despite his poor performance in delivering lines when he began acting, he was still highly requested in upcoming action movies because of what he could offer and the fact that he doesn't rely on stunt doubles to do the work, it was all him and he makes a point of maintaining that work ethic to this day. When he had gotten to love the profession, [ provided that it was a combination of the two things he loved most, cinema magic and action ], he took on acting lessons and starred in what some became award winning movies, but the one that holds a special place for him is sudden violence, it was when he had began to truly enjoy acting, the crew and cast were the amazing to work with, he enjoyed the process through and though. The movie got him the breakthrough he needed in his career &. his very first award, he was still young and an entire horizon of possibilities had just opened for him, he feels like he owes his success to that movie in particular.

on the note of kith season 6 (didn't want to derail the other post but have been thinking about this lately): one of the only things i disliked - or, rather, that felt off about the revival - was how crisp everything felt in terms of the aesthetic. like ik filmmaking technology has evolved since 1994 and they couldn't do the live studio audience even tho they wanted to bc of covid, but idk the original series despite clearly working with cbc and hbo always had this diy energy, vs the new season just very much felt like oh this is a corporate thing that was location scouted and filmed on a lot
but what's interesting about this fault is that you look into anything else the kids in the hall have made themselves in the past decades and it still has that exact diy aesthetic, sometimes unintentionally but that's the best part. like, i'm the most familiar with scott's works for obvious reasons, but you look at something like contemporary mouth congress music videos or any other video project scott's made just bc he wanted to make it and you can see obvious green screens, the fact that it was clearly filmed on an iPhone, using stuff around the house as props, etc. and if you look at bruce's youtube channel you get that sense as well, and it's so delightful to see bc yeah this comedy isn't a corporate entity, it's just something these guys have to make bc they are passionate about it
anyway i guess what i'm saying is if they ever decide to do another kith revival season they should have paul bellini direct it on his iphone 5 and film 99% of it at the toronto library's green screen room
idk maybe this post is too niche bc a lot of the stuff i'm citing (i.e. mouth congress music videos) hasn't actually been released yet and also i have literally been on these diy sets in the past year where someone just set up a pop-up greenscreen in their living room and my "job" is to make sure the pets don't wander into frame. but yeah idk i find it very funny that watching the revival my only complaint was the lack of that genuine diy spirit and then one year later i'm part of that type of production

I'm not going to listen to this podcast because I would probably dislike it but this take on jc performing improv comedy is exactly why that fic about him being a successful standup comedian is so absolutely out of character
And I want to be clear regarding that last part, the improv comedy debate that again destroyed our apartment for a few days: Jiang Cheng would be the worst at improv comedy. I cannot be shaken from this view. And it's not because he can't joke or he isn't funny or I don't love him. It's because--and I do feel I'm SO right about this--the SECOND one of his jokes bombed, he would not be able to recover. There is no point in canon where he wouldn't make his embarrassment everyone's problem. Jin Ling would do the same, but he's fifteen so at every moment he is having the biggest emotions possible to the inconvenience of others, and that's a teen's prerogative. Jiang Cheng is a full adult man who would be so visibly furious at himself and everyone else on stage that comedy would just stop for a while.
also they made him a knight-in-shining-armor who told off a guy harassing a nameless barista and then she gave him her number and now they're married and she's pregnant and look. I don't have anything else to say than 🤮
