Hi! I just found your account and I can't thank you enough for this! Being unable to access the original Japanese contents is very frustrating so reading it froom you is such a special experience. As IceAdo gets cancelled and we are thrown into radio silence (again), I'm more and more feeling like I want to understand where sayokubo's inspirations originally came from. Super excited to read your translations! Thank you for all your hard work!
Hi! Thank you for your kind comment! 💜
I'm of course going to continue translations! At least to 1000 daily translation ✨
Right now, the masterlist is not working (tumblr 😡), but in the near future I'm going to nicely put everything in order and better tagged, so it's easier to find stuff!

My thoughts on Yuri On Ice and where it went
So I’ve been wanting to properly articulate what I feel is off about the Iceado production and how abnormal it is, what I think could be happening and my reasoning. So far I’ve only posted about these feelings on asks, replies and discord but I want to expand on them in writing. This is kinda long so I apologize in advance. Feel free to send me asks or reply to this post with your opinion.
First of all. Anime is a product and a property, and as such, it is usually milked until it no longer produces enough money to be profitable for the studio.
Yuri on ice was a total best seller, It trended #1 every Wednesday on both Tumblr and twitter. Episode 7 crashed Tumblr. They have a huge international audience, which is something that is so valuable.
The first 2 years after YOI ended we had had all sorts of events. Collaborations, pop ups, the live stage, all sorts of merchandise etc..
Please. just read this bit on the popularity and success of YOI  ( X )
with that in mind,
what in the hell happened?
Here’s the two train of thoughts I see a lot in asks/replies:
It’s a “focusing on other bigger projects” kind of issue
It’s an LGBTQ censoring issue
Here’s why I think it’s neither of those two:
focusing on other bigger projects is the most popular theory and the one that honestly makes more sense. yoi being put on pause to produce the money cows JJK, AOT, CSM, and Vinland saga. It makes sense except for the fact that they still found the time to animate 12 episodes of a relatively obscure Ballet manga, Dance Dance Danseur. which already finished airing and despite being a MAPPA property, it wasn’t very popular online. Why take the chance to order 12 episodes from DDD and not Yuri on ice? which if you read the link I placed earlier had impressive statistics. This exact fact leads me to believe it's not a time or focus issue.
If LGBTQ censoring was the issue, we wouldn't have BL animes coming out every year, and since Yuri on ice came out we’ve had quite a bit of BL animes and movies, for example: Given, the clouds gather, Given the movie, Sasaki to miyano, Umibe no étranger, Yes Ka No Hanbun Ka, sankaku mado, and a bunch more including live actions.
and you might say “but yoi is not tagged BL so it could be censored” well, just a year after Yuri on ice aired Banana fish, a Mappa property, had a full on screen kiss between the main two characters. and that wasn’t tagged BL either. Y*richin B*tch cl*b got an anime adaptation and it doesn’t get more explicit than that so no. While I’m not claiming censoring doesn’t exist in anime, the laws aren’t a strict regime as some people make it seem. Implying the whole project got scrapped because of the main gay relationship is beyond unlikely. I don't think anyone could possibly deny that Yuri and Victor’s relationship was by far the biggest selling point of yuri on ice; the audience  knows it, the creators know it, the producers know it.
So what is it?
I present my leading theory... simple yet I find it quite likely...
Creative differences and doubts about where to take the story.
what do Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on titan, Chainsaw man, Dance Dance Danseur,  Vinland saga, and hell’s paradise have in common?
they’re all manga adaptations.
Yuri on ice is an original story through and through. Thought up by the wonderful minds of Kubo Mitsuro and Sayo Yamamoto. Yuri on ice has been both the last anime they’ve worked on so far since 2016.
The thing about Yuri on ice is that the story, by virtue of being so original in it’s plot and setting, deviated heavily from the usual money-making structure of your average sports anime.
The characters were not teenagers in high school
A major plot point is that both of the main characters are nearing the end of their careers.
the story wraps and by the 12 episode mark you’ve already been to a bunch of competitions that in other sports anime would’ve taken seasons. EX: Kuroko no basket, haikyuu, slam dunk
Most important character arcs are resolved.
Main conflict in the series is resolved. Victor and Yuri get together.
The truth is, Yuri on ice is a series that really wraps up neatly. where can you go from there? go through competitions all over again until Yuri wins gold? when we’ve already stablished that Victor loves Yuri for who he is and will stay no matter what? what would be the point of that? Have Viktor keep being a playboy celebrity when already his search for live & love was resolved?
There is a danger of falling into the same story beats and a season 2 would have to be carefully constructed. Where do you take this franchise?
I used to not understand why they opted for a prequel movie instead of a season 2. Now that I look at this decision from a different perspective and while I do not personally agree with it, I can totally understand it.
Going forward with this original series is difficult, and I can tell the writers Sayo & Kubo care a great deal for their creation. The way YOI is so carefully structured shows that so much thought and care went into it. seriously, have you ever thought about how much detail, narrative, interaction, and character arcs YOI manages to have in just 12 episodes? it’s quite impressive. this is a project that they had no idea would get green lit for a second season and they knew the studio was taking a chance on them with this original series so they were incredibly concise as to have it end as neatly as possible.
but that “see you next level” was a promise to an eager fandom.
Back to why I think creative differences and testing the waters as to where to take the story is what’s happening:
In January 2019 an Ice Adolescence teaser was shown in Japan only, in complete exclusiveness. the people who saw it weren’t allowed to record it so they talked about it in great detail on twitter. For more than a year, this very same teaser was kept from the international audience until it dropped on YouTube on November 2020. According to the people who saw it in the exclusive screening nothing had been changed or added, it was the very same.  So why the long wait? It’s like there is an uncertainty as to where to take the project and if it should continue in the same direction. “Let’s give it a year and see if we’re still on track with the current story”
To be honest, there have been many times where I’ve genuinely believed the project has been dropped. I know there are franchises that take longer to produce, look at Evangelion’s last movie, it took like 9 years to be made. As I was reading on the story of EVA 3.0 + 1.0 and why it took so long to be made when Eva is a well stablished money making franchise, I learned that Hideaki Anno, the creator, developed severe burnout and had to take a break, he was undecided on where to take the story and other people who worked with him in the project left the studio.
Since I am a yoi blog, and I’m always scanning the tag, replies, twitter, reddit, I see that a lot of discussion surrounding Iceado always seems to point to the fact that people believe this is studio meddling. What happened to Hideki and EVA could’ve happened to yoi. That even a huge property like EVA took 10 years because the creator was not comfortable, and did not want to continue just yet points to the weight the creator holds. I believe that if it were up to mappa, given how much money yoi made them, we would've had yuri on ice season 3 by now. But no, this is ultimately Sayo and Kubo’s child and I strongly believe that if we do not have something by now, it’s because something is taking place between these two, perhaps burn out, perhaps creative differences, or perhaps they seriously just need lots of time to think this one through. Even though it’s hard sometimes because I love this franchise, I want to trust Kubo and Sayo as I did before. I want to trust they’ll deliver a product that is good, and campy, and fun, and deep and sometimes heartbreaking. I will wait until I can see this through

ice adolescence: what we know
Tumblr media
so, iceado. when, what, who, where? the thing is, we don’t really know much!
according to mappa staff and ensemble fove, the movie production began in early 2018. so far the only confirmed characters are young victor and makkachin, and the olympics have been mentioned. more specifically, victor’s first olympics!
as for promotional material, we have the key visual movie poster with music that was first shown during yuri!!! on concert in july ‘18. the short teaser that was shown during the japanese yoi marathon in january ‘19 hasn’t been published or shown anywhere else yet, but as long as there’s no official statement about it having been meant for the marathon viewers only, i’m not giving up hope! just as even though other characters haven’t been announced yet, or the period(s) of time the movie timeline will cover, anything and everything you hear is just speculation and speculation only.
the only official information about the release date we have at the moment is “2019″. it’s entirely possible that the release date might get moved to 2020!! as long as there’s nothing official, it means ‘19 release isn’t out of the question yet. some movie websites have iceado listed for the last week of ‘19, but it just means than that the official date hasn’t been published yet so they just shove it to the very end. we will know more when we know more, and there’s nothing we can do about it at the moment.
there’s no official information whether the movie will be shown only in japan or also internationally in some form (theaters or online simulcast), but sayokan and kubo have expressed they’re doing their best to bring it overseas at their con panels. they are very much aware that yoi has a huge fanbase outside japan! the fact that the concert was streamed worldwide and all promo material for it was written in several languages looks rather promising as well.
once again, a reminder that the only 100% reliable information is the kind that comes directly from an official source! please do not spread rumours or unconfirmed information as facts, no matter how believable they’d sound.
i know it’s tempting, but those kinds of things tend to quickly morph from “i have this theory” or “i saw this interesting info somewhere and it seems plausible” to “this is definitely, 100% going to happen, i know this because sayokan called me herself and kubo sent me an email” somewhere along the way. wrong information like that can easily make people feel angry at being let down by not getting what they were “promised”, and those feelings sometimes get taken out on the staff online, which we really don’t want to happen!

Today's translation #476
Go Yuri Go!!!, Yuri!!! on ICE official fanbook, Hosoya Yoshimasa interview
Part 2.
-- You do you think is a rival of the character that you play?
H: I don't think that Otabek thinks about others as "rivals" that much, in general. I don't think that the feels that he is competing with somebody for getting better scores, or doing better performances. Watching the scenes, when he is saying his monologue, I thought that he rather wants to overcome the clumsy and mentally weaker old version of himself.
-- Please, tell us also something about Otabek and Yurio's interactions.
H: In the show, we see a scene, where Otabek says to Yurio, that Yurio is similar to him. After that he says his declaration of friendship, but in the screenplay, there was a note saying "he likes that in Yurio, that he is similar to him", so when I was playing my role, I was keeping that in mind. But as these two were talking, I couldn't stop thinking about Otabek's undercut, for some reason. I was wondering what actor would play the role of Otabek, if they were to make a live-action movie.
[Notes: YoI live-action movie...💀💀 Only if directed by Sayochin.
@thegirlwhorideslikeasamurai mentioning MAPPA in her reblog gave me some flashbacks 💀
Actually, it's very interesting that in 2019 Avex made another anime movie, Eiga no Osomatsu-san, which flopped (~6 oku yen at box office, for comparison, JJK movie made like 130-140 oku?), and they also managed to make fools of themselves, by claiming that they want at least 666666 people to see the movie and "let's count officially", but it ended up being close to "400000"... (I bet that's another reason, why they were even more wary of IceAdo, after the trailer also flopped, and theaters were like 90% empty). Both IPs' huge popularity was based on fujoshis mainly, and you can actually see that when people were commenting on that movie flop online, they also talked that "YoI is going to be next, bc fujos just get bored and move on..." In YoI's case, it's not that they just moved on, they actively started to hate the creators, and everything that they do, if it isn't 100% about Yuuri being the center of the universe, drawn in a way that they approve of (so in a """uke""" way). Too bad YoI is not a pixiv original fujo doujinshi (I know some people kind of forgot that it isn't), so their requests were actually never met properly 😞
But what's even more interesting though, is that unlike on YoI, they didn't give up on Osomatsu IP, even though it has been already dubbed "owakon", "finished content" by fandom in 2019... And made a live-action movie in 2022 starring Johnnys Smile-upers? ((I just looked it up how it came to be and oh boy, it seems that avex had quite close ties to a child predator with hundreds of victims, as multiple bands were under their label... (It's common for a big Jp entertainment-related company to have ties to him, but still... I never thought of it 🫠...))) So they went for a rebrand for that IP, you can say - now catering mainly to fans of boy idol groups. It's quite clear that YoI is treated.... Differently.]

Look what I found again! (I'm really sorry if somebody who doesn't like dramas is reading this...). I don't even know that person, so I absolutely don't have anything against them personally, was just looking at "mappa yoi" tweets this morning. However, I really think that is serious, the stuff that this fandom is doing, rn.... So I'm sorry for another rant.
Tumblr media
Yep, I don't like semes&ukes obsessed fujos and I never will, I'm guilty here. If somebody thinks that YoI was made as a p0rn scrapbook for fujos and that they have right to demand from creators to give them more "VicYuu" (seme Victor and uke Yuuri), then that's their opinion, but I disagree. This is the gist of what I always write about YoI fujos - that they were harassing the creators, hard.
That I've said that Sayo and Kubo don't want to make more YoI is because Jp fans are homophobic is simply not true.
Recently, I've written for example, that one likely reason why there was no confirmation about Y&V relationship is because even fans (fujos included) are homophobic and this is true, that they are. It's not just YoI's problem - I really invite everyone who happens to read this to do some research into it, because that's something worth discussing. (My posts about that are tagged "#yoi fandom and fujo culture"). The industry and society are much more homophobic than the West, as well, so of course that's not only the fandom's issue, but I've written about that as well.
Serious question - have you ever seen any Jp article discussing YoI as queer representation? I mean, from the fandom? From anywhere?
Another issue - that Avex was/is at war with YoI fujos is also a well-know fact in the Jp fandom. You may think that they are the only homophobic one, together with MAPPA, but are you sure that you can see the whole picture? Hating on somebody, because you think that they are the villain based on your... Well, I don't even know what's the source for people, who just chose MAPPA to hate, tbh! Because they are the most well-known name to the Eng fandom? All in all, that's nothing new, on the Jp side of the fandom Mitsurou, as well as a few other staff members received the same treatment.
I guess, people who hate MAPPA so much just feel powerless and need to feel that they can bully somebody to feel better about it. I understand being upset, because you have been waiting for so long, but rn it evolved into hate towards the studio and the CEO, based on misinfo. Mappa doesn't even own the rights to YoI. But go on, I guess... In this particular case Otsuka has zero responsibility for the apparent lack of language skills and reading comprehension of anybody in the Eng fandom.
And lastly, I don't think that fujos are the direct reason why the IP holders pretend that YoI doesn't exists. I think there is a mix of reasons, but the most likely direct one, in my opinion, is that YoI + IceAdo's trailer (which many fujos hated because no uke Yuuri 😢) did badly in theaters in 2019. Here's where you can check how many tickets were sold. It was in theaters 2019/01/18~2019/02/07. But each time I say something about IceAdo, I clearly state that this is my own opinion and this time, it's also just my opinion.
(Here are the numbers if somebody is interested:
Part I
25025 seats/ 6906 tickets sold 25626/4430 25041/2461 24966/1124 24358/917 24356/1096 23201/859
Part II
19263/4449 17475/3625 14693/2283 17822/1022 17721/858 18176/1125 17291/828
Part III
11452/4834 9653/4684 9815/3697 11608/1992 11003/1726 11732/2033 11087/1980, each part is a different part of the TV series, but you can see that the distributor reduced the seats by ~60% in the last week. So yeah, a nice boycott.)
Most importantly, pretending that you know the industry more than the people in the industry, won't change anything - I'm talking about internet randos hating Otsuka CEO, because clearly he LIEEEEEES. Embarrassing~~

About Ice Adolescence...
If you don't like to read about negative stuff concerning things you like I'd recommend not to read this post...
Saw the post about trying to make IceAdo related hashtag trending to make MAPPA say something about YoI.
I'm not going to preach to people what they should or shouldn't do. Everyone is free to do whatever they think is the right thing to do in this situation.
However, I must say that from my experience many people in the western fandom seem to know very little about how Japanese anime industry/fandom work. This is of course because of language barrier, cultural barrier etc... I know that shows like YoI are comfort shows for many people so they simply don't want to see/read/hear/think about the negative stuff. I get that.
That being said if you wonder why MAPPA, Avex etc. ignore foreign fans so easily its most likely because most of the things that you tweet at them are so... unusual, looking from Japanese perspective, that I bet their reaction most of the time is either "..." or "haha those gaijins again lol".
Like the "we queer people demand the representation we are entitled to so give us more YoI!!!" comments...
Meanwhile in Japan, YoI is either known as the disgusting "homo anime"/"fujo anime" or fujos do Olympic level mental gymnastics to prove that they are not gay. Pure love between coach and his student, but fantasies about kawaii uke Yuuri being pursued by masculine seme prince Victor are of course allowed and recommended✨ The level of causal homophobia is probably unimaginable to people who are used to western fandom where most people identify as queer...
There was/is a lot of crazy and disgusting sh*t going on in the Japanese fandom, caused mainly by the fact that a certain very loud subset of fujos wasn't happy with how the IP is handled (too much Yurio, too little Yuuri, Victor too cute and too feminine, Yuuri too manly...). So these fujos are in a state of war with Avex (fujos usually call the company "Avekuso", kuso means sh*t) and Mitsurou ("Dodai-sensei" among many other, dodai means "foundation", because fujos didn't like it when Mitsurou once said in an interview she is a part of YoI foundation... it's used in "how dare she?!!" mocking kind of way, because they don't like her interpretation of certain things in the show) since early 2017... If you know what was going on, you're going to notice that there is a lot of hilarious dog-whistling in articles, convos with staff members on twitter and so on. Hilarious if you think how weird people can get because of an anime they like... But the people who had to deal with them, and that includes YoI creators, probably weren't having the best time of their lives.
Add in the fact that figure skating in Japan is not as popular as it was, real life figure skaters are now more advanced than Victor even, Russian figure skating scandals, Russia's attack on Ukraine... This isn't really a good time for YoI.
Not to mention the fact that so many people, in western fandom too, demand IceAdo, but only if Yuuri and Victuuri are there... There's a very real possibility that this is not what Sayo had in mind originally. I know Victuuri is super popular and for a good reason... But it doesn't change the fact that it may also be just another form of trying to harass the creators into catering to fans because everyone likes Victuuri and we demand more and you have to listen to us!!!! I really like Yuuri and Victor as a couple, but this behavior is not cool, imo...
Just my two yens...

Translations of some old stuff... #1
I've got my hands on some cool interviews from 2016/2017 recently, so I thought I start doing some translations… (while waiting for IceAdo, so prolly I have all eternity...)
YoI was sooo popular in 2016/2017 but when I was looking for translations after I watched the show for the first time, I haven't really found that many (I suppose a lot was deleted over the years…)
Yuri!!! on stage pamphlet. Short comments from Mitsuro Kubo about all characters who appear in the event's story:
Part 1.
Katsuki Yuuri
The character of Katsuki Yuuri, previously still vague, solidified in the scene in episode 4 when he touches Victor's hair whorl. That scene is also one, where I managed to express an idea I've had in my head for a very long time - I wanted to show something like a moment not connected to the main story, when their relationship changes, but not in a logical way. The same thing can be said about the scene in the last episode when, even though Victor is crying, Yuuri pushes aside his fringe and says "So you cry too!" - Yuuri has this very primal (原始的) characteristic of putting his own curiosity first before feelings of the other person, that's a desire he can't suppress. I think it was our intention to use this characteristic to make the viewers expect that he is surely going to act in a way they cannot predict. Throughout the series, Yuuri's character was shaped by misleading the audience to think they know Yuuri's personality and then showing them in each episode that they were not right about him. That's why the character turned out to be much more complex that we thought he would be in the first episode and I think the viewers can sense that the creators had a lot of fun writing him. We sometimes say that the characters are acting on their own, but in this case I think we were writing the character while being bossed around by him.

Hello! I hope I am not bothering but I just wanted to get someone off my chest. I was wondering what the Kubo meant when she said that rinks were similar to what members of the same club wears. It just kinda confused me when she says that considering how romantically the ring exchange scene is (seriously who gives each other rings in front of a church platonically!?)
No need to worry, I like discussing things too deeply😂 so you are not bothering at all! But another fujo rant comes in 3... 2... 1...
So yeah, the those rings are for clubmates interview... Imo, to understand why she said that, or why it was written (because she didn't say that publicly, so we can never know for sure), we need to talk about the difference between how western fandom approaches "representation" and how Jp fandom does.
Japanese fandom and representation
Things are progressing in Jp, too, but even to this day, a lot of people (that doesn't mean all) who call themselves "fujoshi" don't want "representation" and don't want to be allies. They simply consume BL and, let's face it, p0rn, for their own enjoyment. It's in Jp only, but some time ago, somebody posted on twitter their graduation project on this topic - an article and video - if anyone can understand some Jp and is interested in this topic, it's worth giving a watch. The title is "同性愛嫌悪的にBL・GLを愛でる私たち", "We, who homophobically love BL and GL" .
I've mentioned it before, but in case of YoI, there was, eg., a random article from a gay journalist, a figure skating fan, who wrote about how good that dinner scene in ep. 10 was. And it was really, really good - Jp is a country, where a lot of people still think that being gay is bad for society, that gay people are unproductive, so it's okay that they face discrimination. So that scene, where Phichit just congratulates Y&V on their marriage like it's the most natural thing in the world, is incredibly powerful. Yet in fujo spaces, that article was bashed, obviously - "Why did he write something like that? It doesn't have anything to do with those LGPTs. We just like playing with the characters, but they are not gay...".
BL is not LGBT?
Why you ask? Well, if you like fantasies about semes raping ukes etc. then you probably don't want to be told "hey, that's actually discrimination and homophobia, you really should stop that... Semes and ukes don't exist, most people switch...". That's why a lot of fujos insist that BL is something completely separate from LGBT issues. And that leads us to...
Another thing that I also ranted about in the past - that fujos hijack almost all depictions of same-sex attraction between men in mainstream media deeming them "fujoshi fanservice". So YoI is most often discussed as "fujo-pandering anime", and not as "anime with gay representation" the way it is in the western fandom... And it also had a lot of antis, because quite a lot of people dislike fujos. Some of the most popular lines you see in YoI reviews are: "it would be so much better without the weird fujo pandering...", "it was good, but that weird fujo pandering was unnecessary".
Went so far, so why no confirmation?
So finally giving the answer to the question... I believe, that there was very little incentive from the marketing point of view - society is homophobic, industry is homophobic, fandom is homophobic - to actually announce that Y&V are really gay and in love. Most fujos are only interested in Yuuri being uke and Victor being seme (so many fujos wished for IceAdo to fail and I hope that karma will come back to them...). So after the show ended, in my opinion, what is in Jp called koushiki (so people who run the IP and seriously it's not "Mappa"...) really wanted to get rid of the "fujo pandering" reputation (and fujos to a certain extent too, probably, because they've got so rabid that a bunch was even sued for online harassment) and started to backtrack on some things - avoiding rings, avoiding Y&V only arts, even avoiding Y&V only merch, which would sell like crazy. And yeah, Mitsurou and VAs sometimes pushing the narrative that "it's not that serious". They also started promoting Yurio instead. I think, from their perspective, it was the safe choice for the IP... Make it for "everyone", not only for fujos.
Where we are now...
Only it wasn't, in the end... The great koushiki vs. fujos war started (fujos started acting as "rings police", attacking staff members on twitter, doxxing Avex's employees, so on) and long story short, two years later YoI+IceAdo trailer did very bad at cinemas (in the first week out of ~170000 seats, only ~17000 were sold, that's ~90% empty seats - well, a little less maybe, because I'm not sure if special tickets are included in these statistics)... That's my opinion, but I think that was the most likely reason why IceAdo wasn't released in 2019. With such a big Jp distributor, they probably started to fear it will flop. Or the other way - the distributor decided that it would probably flop after seeing these numbers - allegedly, the first rumor that something is wrong was from that distributor's employee.
The very sad reality is that we are in 2023 now, and koushiki pretends YoI doesn't exist... If you think about it, it's really extraordinary... Even without the movie, they could release "VicYuu merch" and it would sell like crazy, but their stance has always been "Well yeah, but we prefer to not earn money, actually 😘 Want to play a game where Victor and Yurio bully Yuuri together, maybe?".
That was long again... I'm sorry, but it's just not possible to give an honest answer in a few sentences.

Yuri!!! on Life
Sayo Yamamoto x Mitsurou Kubo conversation
Part 20.
K: Also, I think that lately, there's a lot of skaters who have a undercut hairstyle similar to Otabek.
Y: Yeah, from every country! Undercuts look much better with men's hair. You can also do it with woman's soft hair, but the effect is a little bit different than with man's hair.
Interviewer: It's the same with Georgi Popovich's hairstyle - you can only do that with men's hair.
K: Sometimes you see people and you think why their hair is like that, like a awning over a window - and this is how his hairstyle was born. But Popovich is so popular! I'm so glad that this character was born to us.
Y: He's a well-loved character, isn't he!
K: What's so good about him is that he's a character that doesn't hide anything. He's really so awesome. Also the fact that he doesn't seem to worry about the results of Grand Prix series...
Y: Yeah, he doesn't worry about it. He's already started to think about European Championships next year and World Championships.
K: And Russian Nationals.
Y: Oh yes. But, I was really happy that so many [real-life] skaters, both Japanese and from abroad, have watched Yuri!!!.
Interviewer: Have you anticipated it that this anime would become so popular among skaters from all countries?
Y: It became so much more popular that I expected, so I was a bit… How should I put it. Each time I saw that a skater posted something about Yuri!!! on their Twitter or Instagram, I instantly took screenshots while squealing, because I'm an otaku… And also, that so many people who weren't interested in figure skating, started watching real-life figure skating because of Yuri!!! on Ice - that's what made me the happiest.
K: Yuri!!! has a lot of young fans, so there are people who started going to rinks and skating themselves, adults are going skating with their children, or watching figure skating competitions on TV, or if they can, they travel to see the town where the anime was set… I really really always think that it would be so nice if people went one step outside [as in "out of their comfort zone"] thanks to the fact that they like a manga or an anime and because they've become interested in something because of it - I really like it that [manga/anime] can influence people like that. It was the same for me - because I was working on this anime, I watched a lot of competitions, and also I was able to go abroad... Because the things that inspire you the most to create your works are things that you can't get to know by just sitting in front of a TV. So I think that if it can give strength to people who want to go somewhere else, even if it's just one step, to a place different than where they're now, or if it can become a trigger for people to do just that, then anime is really such an awesome medium.
Y: When I hear you saying things like that, I really sincerely think that I'm so lucky that I could make this anime with you... It has been decided that we can now create the continuation of Yuri!!! in a form of a movie to be released in theaters, so we want to see many more figure skating competitions and challenge ourselves to do things we couldn't do in the TV series! ... We won't stop!!!
[Note: That's the end of this interview~~ Woah, it was long 😂✨
And it's always so sad to read about IceAdo... 😞]

Today's translation #27
(Will my wish come true and IceAdo manifest itself if I do 1000 translations...?)
Production notes Part 2.
Ep 8.
Victor and JJ
Victor is cold towards JJ simply because he is not interested in him (laugh). He doesn't even really remember JJ's name, because he is a person, who doesn't even try to remember something if he is not interested in it. In contrast, for JJ, Victor is the person JJ needs to challenge. Rather than looking up to him, JJ wants to be equal to Victor, his rival, so to not think of Victor as somebody he cannot compare to, JJ from time to time calls out to Victor as if they are friends. But I think JJ is afraid to lose more than anyone else. (Kubo)
Ep 9.
Link to the real world
We thought that because it's fiction, we should have the settings a little bit ahead of the real world, and so we made Seung-Gil and Emil jump quad toe loops. Nowadays a few skaters can already land this jump successfully. About Seung-Gil, I think he will be in a great condition during next Olympics. It seems that he and JJ had some history together when they were competing in juniors, so I think it's quite fun to imagine what kind of past it was. (Kubo)
Ep 10.
Otabek Altin
In private life, he's a DJ, and has a lot of street, or should I say rascal friends. That's why Yurio thinks Otabek is so cool, because he has so many things that Yurio doesn't have, but wants to have. Yurio was very happy that Otabek wanted to be his equal, without any strict superior-inferior hierarchy. And on that day, when Otabek asked him "Are you coming? Or are you not coming?"… (Kubo) [Note: There's nothing more. She just left it like that… xD]
Ep 11.
[Nothing here]
Ep 12.
Victor's tears
We animated Victor's tears so they are not flowing down his cheeks, but fall down from the ends of his eyelashes. People who are not used to crying cry just like that, without changing their face expression or trying to wipe their eyes, with tears just dropping down, one by one. (Kubo)
A secret story about production of the last episode
When I was writing the storyboards, the temporary title of this episode was "Yuuri says he's going to retire.". I wanted to make Victor say: "The kanji 勝 in Yuuri's surname stands for 自分勝手, thinking only about yourself/being self-centered", but he doesn't speak Japanese that well, so I threw that idea away (laugh). Also, in the storyboards I included a moment, when before Yurio's FS, Yuuri tries to tell him that he's going to retire, but he can't say it, so finally he doesn't… But because we didn't have enough time it was cut out. (Kubo)
Phichit's dream
Phichit didn't tell Yuuri about his dream because he also wants to surprise him. Every skater thinks not only about their future, but also how can they build a world, where they can enjoy skating even more and about what they can do for their country. (Kubo)
[Notes: "The kanji 勝 in Yuuri's surname stands for 自分勝手, thinking only about yourself/being self-centered" - Imagine how absolutely hilarious would it be if Victor started analyzing kanjis like a Japanese language nerd during their argument...? Shame Mitsurou didn't use this idea... That would be just too cute to witness ✨ And what Yuuri's reaction would be like...? Mitsuroooou...]
