OK IM READY HERES A VERY VERY LONG POST (I have warned you)

So The Past Within is part of a puzzle game series called Rusty Lake by a studio of the same name. There’s 15 games (and a short film!) that precede it and one coming out in September. That SOUNDS like a daunting amount of games but at least the first 9 were released as flash games (and rereleased as a collection) and they’re all relatively short. Most of those games are in the style of the 2D sections of The Past Within or something similar, whereas the 3D was unique to TPW. There’s a variety of different characters, families, and time periods these games take place. I won’t go into too much detail about the other games in this rant so you can either experience them yourself or I’ll explain in another post or whatever! But be warned that those games are a lot darker than TPW and def have more blood, violence, etc.

ALSO if you’re interested in playing but you’re worried about the cost of 15 whole games, you can buy them all for like $20!!! They’re available on steam as well as mobile and some of them are just straight up free. If you want to test the waters, I would recommend getting the Cube Escape Collection on mobile since they’re free and are the first 9 games. If you don’t want to play them that’s cool too I don’t mind ranting :) BEFORE THE HUGE RANT!!! past this point I’m going to talk abt this game like you’ve seen the sss stream so if you haven’t, stop reading here and I’ll write a non-spoilery rant and review!!! I really really don’t want to ruin the experience if you didn’t watch the whole stream!!!!!

ANYWAYS The Past Within is pretty straightforward. You play as Rose Vanderboom who has received a letter that her father, Albert, has died and you must resurrect him with help from a person from the future. You do this by using a black cube and a golden cube. These cubes are featured in most of the other games. They represent memories and have been shown to manipulate time in some cases. It is revealed that before he died, Albert built a cubical device that utilizes the time abilities of the cubes, and transports the three required “ingredients” to be transported from 1926 to 1984. Another staple of the series are corrupted souls. When Albert became “corrupted” (after Julia put the coins on his eyes and when he was in the tube for Jacob) he was a corrupted soul. These are also featured many times throughout the series and are crucial to many parts of the lore. Some of the puzzles on this device allude to the previous games, such as the use of chess, the masks Albert wears, and the voodoo doll. There’s also appearances of other characters in these games, such as Ida, Albert’s sister, and the suited parrot Jacob sees in the mirror (fun fact: a comment on the vod of the stream said the parrot was actually a super important lore character and it sparked a lot of questions of why he appeared in TPW, which is what really prompted me to look into these games!). A majority of these references are to Rusty Lake: Roots, the game where Albert and Rose originate from. If you have any questions about Albert, Rose, and the rest of the Vanderboom family, Roots is the game for that, but I would not start there as there’s a specific order the games are recommended to be played! Though it is a co-op game, both players are Rose, one in the past and one in the future. (it bothers me SO MUCH that Jacob does not say this until THE END OF GAME despite it literally being written on a piece of paper he just. didn’t acknowledge.) I realize this is not an extremely in depth answer but I can explain more if needed.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game. I really loved the aesthetic and style of it and I thought the co-op puzzle were pretty fun. I know a lot of other people didn’t like the co-op aspect and I think some say the puzzles were too easy, and it makes sense why people would feel this way, but I personally didn’t mind. I think there was also a big complaint that the game didn’t expand much upon the lore and had too many questions rather than answers, and I do agree with that. Looking back on it after having played all the games I can see how annoying it is to have all these new questions that ignore several unanswered ones. Like whatever the ending was. I still don’t understand the ending. However, it is a GREAT game to hook in new players and I’m actually really glad this is the first game I ever saw of the series. TPW has such an intriguing atmosphere and teases at all the lore behind the characters that it draws people in, or at least people like me. I get a bit worried people won’t like the other games bc there somewhat different than TPW, like people might expect them all to be co-op, or just that the other games are a lot…..weirder (it’s weird in a way I really love tho). But it’s a really interesting starting point for those of us who didn’t know abt the series in its flash days. For the characters I really love Rose, she’s everything to me. She doesn’t have a lot of dialogue in the one or two games she appears in, but I love her. On the other hand, I have a lot of complex feelings on Albert in a way I can only describe as “I want to study him like a bug and then smash him with hammers.” I don’t like him, I don’t hate him, but rather a secret third thing. But keep in mind everything I say here is just my opinion and I’ve only known about this series for like. one or two months.

Ok this is the longest post I’ve ever made ever and is probably so incoherent but I’ll stop there. ‘Outer Range’ Star Imogen Poots on the Big Finale Twists and Her Hopes for Season 2

How did you initially get involved with “Outer Range?”

I was sent the pilot script the summer before we ended up shooting. And I just thought it was really cool and made an audition tape. I think my boyfriend spent 2/3rds of a day helping me do it. And then I was like, No, it’s not good enough. I threw it away and then did it again. That’s how it started. And I spoke with Brian and Zev, the people who created the show, and learned about the other cast members who were coming on board and yeah, that’s the way it began.

When you talked to Brian, how much did he tell you about Autumn? How much of that backstory was there from the beginning?

The large reveal and the final episode, I knew about. They told me that about three days before we started filming. They had like a year, but they told me three days before. Which is I think is a good thing because it actually meant I was sitting with a real person rather than a twist.

I didn’t know a hell of a lot. As the scripts came in, I learned more. And that’s one of the difficulties of television is you don’t have the full picture initially, like you do with film and theater where you can… You know what you’ve ordered with a three-course meal, whereas this is surprising. But what that does is it keeps you incredibly present because each scene and each episode is its own microcosm. And you have to be ready to engage. I really enjoyed that challenge. I was very aligned with her quest to also find out more, I suppose.

And what is your understanding of her quest?

Well, I was aware that she had a poverty of knowledge. And she was looking to certain writers like Simone Weil, who was mentioned in the script. She was adopting other people’s modes of thinking. And obviously in, I think it’s 7 or 8, she repeats that mantra from “Dune.” She’s someone who, by the end of the season, I understood was far down the rabbit hole of that fixation on maybe this notion of the American hero and that you could become invincible. But her quest, it felt initially familial. It felt like she was trying to figure out who she was, like many of us do, her ancestral roots and stuff, but quickly combining that with a sense of place and home. We would call it nostalgia, but I think for her, it was like gold. It was like a toxic lacerating quest to find out the truth. Because I knew she was Amy, I understood she would’ve been in and out of that hole. I knew that her relationship with death would be perhaps quite casual. Whereas if we think about all of us, death is the only certainty. It’s the cutoff point. What does a life without that threat do to your relationships with other people?

You have so much ground to cover too, in terms of her taking this medication for bipolar disorder and has these messianic tendencies. What was the hardest thing to wrap your head around in terms of your portrayal of Autumn, and how did you do it?

I think the stuff I found hardest was at the beginning of the show. I’d been told by a couple folks when we started filming, people were really worried about the character of Autumn and quite panicked by her as a figure in the show. And I couldn’t wait to get going. I felt like the challenging stuff for me was earlier on when she hadn’t yet subverted or I hadn’t yet been able to subvert that curious wide-eyed omnipresent nymph-esque character.

And I think in a good way, in a way that was useful for the character was often felt not held back, but bound by something else. And it was fun to get that release. That’ve been something which everyone was really encouraging about. That I’m aware that a lot of people have disliked her as a character. And I think that’s quite fun. Maybe it’s more predictable to want to like that kind of a character and what she represents. It was fun to get to do the thing that a lot of actors get to do, but a lot of actresses don’t, so that was fun.

When we see Autumn in the future she is clearly a cult leader of some kind and by the end of the first season she seems to be well on her way. Did you ask Brian to fill in those gaps?

Yeah, I was, I’d say it was like an ongoing conversation. But the truth is, it’s not so difficult to pick up a newspaper and find a less extreme version of this character.

You think about the notion of wanting to be president, what does that say about a person? There’s something, the ingredients, what if those ingredients fall into the wrong body as we’ve seen evidence of in history. And I think there’s something that was fun to piece together and deeply sad about someone who feels that poverty of identity that they had to embody other thinkers or lean on, even that mantra from “Dune,” that sort of that sense that you can be a superhero. There’s something sort of very insidious about that, I think.

But Brian would tell me about the backstory a bit. And it was quite freeing. It was quite freeing not to know too much, I think. And I could come up with my own reasoning behind certain things because she’s alone and there’s no one to challenge her points of view. That’s how I felt about her. What happens to a person who’s left alone, who’s got really gotten deep in and can fall victim to a cult and can encourage others to do the same?

It’s almost like playing two different characters too, because future Autumn is a completely different person than the person that walks onto the ranch. What was that like?

Yeah, that was cool. I think that needed to happen because I remember them coming towards me with like a makeup brush and I was like, “No, not this character.” But then I was like, “Okay, it’s the future, it’s fine.” And we had to have that to differentiate between the two. But no, it was interesting. I think she’s got a lot of people inside of her. I don’t think, Autumn well, does Autumn know who she really is? Obviously she really doesn’t because otherwise she wouldn’t be in the show. But there’s something about that. She’s role playing. She’s not a shape shifter exactly but I think it’s easy for her to shed the skin.

Let’s talk about the scene of you psyching yourself up in the bathroom, which seems to be the emergence of Autumn as the potential spiritual leader.

Shooting that was so cool because Larry Trilling, our director who did 7 and 8, he was an invaluable asset for the show because he was the one who sat me down and was like, “I think this is where she gets metaphysical. I think she becomes something else personified at this point.” And that was a really fun, open-ended gift actually to get from a director, very freeing. And also he was someone who was keeping tabs if it went too far, they could bring me back. It’s the perfect temperature of a working relationship.

And that scene was amazing because what we have is a stunt double of my character dressed identically. She was doing the boxing stance with me. We were like mirroring each other and the camera came up behind her and then she stepped out of the way. It was just a very clever way of formulating that shot.

And in terms of the actual mantra, it’s lifted from “Dune.” It was really interesting. I used to be really obsessed with hearing poets read their own work. And Allen Ginsburg, when you hear him recite “Howl” in that monotony and that tone, he barely takes a breath. It just comes out like a train on train tracks. I felt like there was something similar to that. It shouldn’t be a performance. It’s inside her, that rhythm that then sets her up to do what she does, which is takes part in a shootout, I guess.

What was it like shooting that final scene and what is your understanding of Autumn’s place in the family going forward?

Yeah, that well shooting that shootout was really fun and I always get really scared around guns and not confident with them. And we had an incredible crew and weapons handlers, so everything felt incredibly safe and then you can do your work. So that was fun. I just don’t like working with guns, but that was fun despite that. And then getting past sort of being ripped to shreds by Tom Pelphrey, who said that in my onesie I looked like, I think it’s like a character from like an American toilet cleaner or something, or a toothpaste figure. It’s some weird character who wears a red onesie apparently. When I wasn’t being ridiculed, I felt very cool in my red one piece. And it just felt like a different show at that point, felt like we were almost parodying something.

The rest of the show didn’t all feel like that but it felt other in a really interesting way. And then in terms of my feeling about the family, it was very strange. I felt quite uncomfortable with that. When Josh was laying me in the bed, it’s like trying to calm down an incredibly feral dog. I felt like a feral dog who was being told that they could now rest and it didn’t feel right. It felt strange. Kudos to Josh, because he carried me across a vast plain and we were doing it in one shot at like four in the morning. And just before we exited frame, I got the giggles when I was supposed to be passed out, so we had to do it all again. It was a fun ending to a very like intense show.

Should the show return, what do you think is next for Autumn?

I certainly have my own hopes for her as a character and the show. It’s unknown at this point, what happens going forward. There are whispers that it will, but then you don’t know. I think with anything as well, because I’m not used to doing stuff more than once anyway. For me I’m kind of like, oh one and done and we made a show about what would happen if a hole appeared on an American pasture. And that’s enough for me. But I also would love to be back with this bunch of actors and creatives again. I get the impression that of course things that were written in season one and things that took place and were set up to be furthered in a second season. I certainly know things that would potentially happen if we were to go again, but we’ll see if the world wants to know.

Was just reading your tags on Avasarala in the Ezpanse tv show, did it by chance also bother you that Amos wasn't a super smiley amiable guy? I felt like they lost this huge chunk of his character but everyone I know in real life who has read the books and watched the show thought it was an accurate portrayal

(late late answer, sorry) I’m kind of a weird case since my read/watch order was:

1. Watch Expanse TV S1 (portrays events of the first half of Expanse Book 1), a little confused, but now I’m super hooked on this story and these characters

2. Binge read every Expanse book yet released, rewatch Expanse S1 now that I have a better grasp on how the parallel/converging mystery plots relate to one another

3. Watch the rest of The Expanse TV show

So, my mental image of most characters (including Amos) was initially shaped by the show. When reading the books, I pictured Wes Chatham as amiable-smile Amos, even though the characterization was so different from how Chatham plays him on the show. I kinda synthesized them both into different aspects of the same character, if that makes sense? The version of Amos who smiles a lot is a version with a good, thorough understanding of himself as a person with low-to-no instinctive empathy, who has learned how to effectively mask among higher-empathy people. The version of Amos who doesn’t smile all the time is the same person with the same feelings, but he has not yet mastered how to interpret, understand, and mirror the emotional states of other people as well as Smiley-Amos does.

Concrete example: a lot of Expanse fans talk about that scene near the start of S1 where Amos tells Holden, “Ask me whether or not I should rip your helmet off and kick you off this bucket, and I couldn’t give you a reason why I should or shouldn’t. Except that Naomi wouldn’t like it.” When you first hear it, the line seems like a threat—which is certainly how Holden interprets it. But that after you’ve watched the whole show and understand Amos better, you rewatch it, and you realize he’s not threatening Holden at all. Amos is telling Holden the straightforward truth: “I don’t have a good grasp on what’s right or wrong in complex situations, but I know there is a difference between right and wrong and I’d like to be on the right side, so I outsource my moral decision-making to Naomi because I trust her judgement. And you need to know about that if we’re going to work together.”

I think Book-Amos and Show-Amos would both describe themselves this way, but Book-Amos would know enough about how other people’s minds work to realize that most people would find this declaration alarming. Book-Amos knows that smiling is how empathy-people say I am not threatening you! in their weird face-language. Book-Amos also knows that his natural affect translates as I am definitely threatening you right now! in the empathy-people-face-language, and adjusts his face accordingly. Book-Amos and Show-Amos say the same thing, but Book-Amos is proficient in his non-native language whereas Show-Amos is still learning.

I love both versions, and if The Expanse ever tackles a screen adaptation of the last books, I’d loooooove to see Wes Chatham play a thirty-years-older Smiley-Amos. Or not! I could see a version of Amos who deploys smiles and laughter strategically, with strangers, but reverts to his normal self among trusted friends—you can tell how close he is with Clarissa because he completely stops smiling when they’re alone together. No need to keep shouting no worries! I’m friendly! in a foreign language when your friend already knows.

All in all, I really like Wes Chatham’s performance! It’s not exactly the same as the Amos in the book, but I think it’s a version that Book-Amos would recognize as himself, just with less masking.

Imagine typical fetch quests (which are called ‘side missions’) in bland, boring, bloated and endless Ubisoft open world games (that’s right, I am winking at you Assassin’s Creed Valhalla), what would you say if I told you there is a whole game just made out of fetch quests? That’s right, that’s Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising in a nutshell. That has been a hard statement to make honestly, but this is what it is, I tried to hard to find a glimpse of something shining in this game to direct my impressions, sadly, there has been none.

I feel the need to stress that I only played 2 hours of this game (total playtime is around 13 hours, as per How Long To Beat It), therefore my opinion is more of ‘first impressions’ rather than a ‘review’, still I am calling this a review and I’ll explain myself more in depth as I’ll be discussing various aspects of the game.

Let’s start with the beginning, the story follows CJ, an adolescent self-exiled girl, who is a self-claimed ‘treasure hunter’, comes across a town on her way, she’s looking for some hot meal and a cosy bed to pass the night, in order to be accepted into this society she’s to complete chores (fetch quests), for citizens around the town, and you help rebuild buildings that were destroyed in recent devastating earthquakes.

At this point, everything looks promising, we, as CJ, are a vagabond young girl and we heed nobody in our way, we’re obstinate, hard-headed and decisive in our actions. With this personality, CJ is trying to hard to be accepted into this town, the acting-mayor of the town welcomes us by handing us a ‘stamp card’. This stamp card is to be filled with stamps that are given by townsfolk once we complete their requested fetch quests, this is necessary to obtain the ‘explorer’s licence’, a made-up licence similar to a working permit for a treasure hunter. In my 2-hour playtime, all I did was completing these fetch quests and sort-of main missions similar to fetch quests, and this progression is strictly linear because you are thrown at quests one after the other, there is no optional quests during this early-stage. When it comes to combat, it is pretty shallow actually, there is only one button for attack, don’t expect any fancy combos or character-specific skills or abilities.

For some missions, I thought the information displayed on the screen was missing. In the quest ‘Trouble in the Quarry’, the game doesn’t instruct you where to go on the screen, you need to head over to Active Quests in Quests menu, and it says it is ‘given by Karna. The Quarry’, you figure out you need to visit the Quarry to meet the relevant person. Why doesn’t it state which location to visit upon fulfilling the requirements? The need to check out by whom it is given by can be effortlessly removed, extra steps such as this are non-intuitive for players. Another case for inefficiency is this: two active quests for the same exact objective are displayed, ‘Trouble in the Quarry’s objective is ‘Complete Frida’s Quest’, and there is an already quest I am trying to accomplish, of which objective is Finding Paint for Frida. As far as I can understand, Trouble in the Quarry is an on-going main questline, whereas ‘An Armorer with an Eye for Fashion’ is a side quest, the game does not explain any of this, this must be the reason why two of them are displayed for the same objective.

Healing Potions can be found in Stowpack menu, which heals 500 HP, in order to see your exact HP you need to go Stats and Equipment menu, then return to Stowpack and use the consumable. You cannot see your exact HP in numbers or percentage in-game, that’s why there is at least three steps to go justo heal yourself. Healing your character is one of the most basic mechanics to do in a game, yet it is extremely cumbersome here.

After completing a fetch quest and helping rebuild Armor Shop you are to purchase/upgrade your armour, there are two options to choose from, which are Hunter Suit+ and Mercenary Armour+. In latter’s description, it mentions Garoo (our kangaroo teammate), so I gather this gear is for him, the thing is that Hunter Suit+ does not mention any character specifically, it would have been much better and helpful if the items had sated with which character the gear is compatible. The main issue comes from this: the gears display your stats and armour stats, if you don’t know for which character you are purchasing the item, how can you make a reasonable decision? In all its essence, the gear should be telling which item is for which character. 

The D-Pad buttons aren’t assigned to any control, I find this odd, it feels like a missed opportunity, the developers could have assigned shortcuts for Quests, Stowpack, Resource Bad or Storehouse which would have eliminated extra steps to access them.

Stats and Equipment: here you find character stats and current gear

Stowpack: consumables such as health potions, balms to boost critical hits, attack speed temporarily.

Storehouse: Resources, Consumables, Accessories, Runes, Exploration Tools.

Resource Bag: Resources, Valuables

Just bear it with me, the menus are cluttered to the max, and they can be reduced in number for the better. For example, why is there two separate menus showing different consumables (in Stowpack and Storehouse), and these menus can be merged which would give the player a more intuitive and friendly experience. Stats and Equipment should list your accessories, runes, tools and as such, why would you need individual menus? As a player, I felt so lost in all these menus because it felt pretty pointless to have so many menus which harms the overall experience, there is one thing nobody can deny: if a design-choice or a mechanic hurts the user experience, it should be improved and upgraded, unfortunately I am leaving this game with a bad taste in my mouth. 

As I discussed so far, the UI leaves so much to be desired, let’s take two separate sub-menus which are titled ‘resources’, one of them in Storehouse, the other one in Resource Bag menus. First and foremost, the game does not teach you anything regarding these menus and why they exist for. I learned, by myself, that Resource Bag shows items you have looted so far in a hostile area, such as The Great Forest, the Quarry, once you extract from these locations, the items you looted are displayed as a list named ‘haul’. The thing is that you collect and loot various items yet there is zero explanation concerning where you can make use of them or how those items are valuable or beneficial to you.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a game that makes me appreciate good design choices in other games in terms of mechanics, user interface, progression, quest design. Personally, I haven’t had such a let-down experience recently this big, I wish all the best for the upcoming game in the series, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, which is to be released in April 2024, and learn from its mistakes and failures.

This is another one of those hard knock kicker 5150s and our son looked at the movie Lost boys just wondering what those motorcycles are considered dirt bikes and they're real husky like Husqvarna KTM mako ATK and gas gas and big CC and they built it out felt it out and he's wondering if it's the Templar and we looked at it and they're not. And the harassing him and one of those stick your head in there so our son says you're in Santa Monica near the real vampires and you'll see that you're making a mistake and he got paranoid and said they can walk in like us and he was like the whole time he's got his ass handed to him and died and fell off the bridge some of them died a Mac was going to die no he died and got brain damage thought he was invincible and could float and all sorts of stuff and they're all going to die because nobody would survive that fall and Jim Morrison fell and he put his arms in front of his head and it saves him from getting some massive massive trauma and Matt did too the rest of them died fully no joke they're on drugs that's what that booze is our son put out. And he does a pretty soon keeps falling and those motorcycles are the x-pro Templar and that's what they are and they bought a whole bunch and they are massively powerful it's like 20 horsepower for 250 but on these guys a little huge because it's a big bike but it looks kind of normal and Jim Morrison is almost to our sun size and you can see it looks kind of small almost but on the others it looks gigantic and it makes a huge throaty sound when you're light it makes it bigger noise and he's hurting and see it before it's almost like the bike is running at half power without strain on the motor it sounds weird these super cars do it all the time when you go and slow and they're burning too rich that's what it is and it started laughing just now cuz they're teeny and they're using the Chinese bike and it's a stolen bike so they I think it's great and it's going to get real popular right now.

The reason they're riding their hard knock kicker 5150 around is they're saying that they're supposed to have 51% and they don't and they learned and they should know better and it's back to hard times which is why the hard knock was made the people are poor and they want to prove it and show people this is right we're not doing well and really there are 40 households in the neighborhood 15 returns and they have lost about 20 people out of those 15 too and the next round it was more and that's piss for 40 is bad and out of the 300 20 houses are not them anymore it's minority morlock and some pseudo empire and that's about it but it's not that many but it is increasing slowly and the others are generals that are fighting one house is almost empty a clan is almost gone. And that's bja side. We are beginning today. We are also going to start taking over the expo Templar and we're going to name it something else that name is disgusting and weird. And the motorcycle remained Chinese and they're buying tons of them right now to try and keep the factories and usually goes the other way but orders went up it's almost 700 billion that's right not a million it's 700 billion that's huge. And Chow fat and his bike are reaching massive heights it's not as powerful but it really moves it's got about 15 horsepower and it's smaller and it goes fast and that's what 250 is used to be even at Sun knows it they started making them too big and it goes really really fast for a Chinese bike it's about 120 miles an hour with street tires and he's selling like madness and open tons of factories and with salaries even make two trillion a week this bike is released no but it's been around but after mentioning it once it's shot up to 500 million and it's really selling fast it's big and they can ride it and it's good for the trails and bumps and whippet news whereas Chow fat it's okay on those it's just a little smaller but people want to ride it on trails and roadways that are and pass I didn't want to have to stress the whole time but in combat you need the big one and they're buying it to try and attack us and they can't get enough

ARC Review: Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann

Note: this book was published previously; this is a review of a re-release ARC. Additionally, this review will discuss sexual assault extensively, as this is a crucial part of the novel.

For when you're vibing with... girls who aren't like other girls, actually, heroes who deserve better, and compelling ideas that went somewhere.

Cora hates her sister Mandy's fiance, Dean, and has ever since they started dating. But when Cora and Dean are kidnapped by a sadistic serial killer, they not only suffer at his hands, but are forced to have sex in front of him--repeatedly. After being rescued, Dean and Cora are fundamentally changed and bonded; and only they know what actually happened in the basement.

To be clear: when I give this book a low rating, it's not because I hate the idea. The idea is why I requested it. I knew this was a dark romance (and to an extent it is) I'm good with that, I knew it had sexual assault on the page, I'm good with that (though I am dubious on how it's handled). I appreciate the content warnings at the opening of the book. My issues are not about concept--the concept is the thing I like. My issues concern execution.

Quick Takes:

--I'll be clear here so that nobody readying this review toddles into this book confused about the sexual assault. Cora is raped by the serial killer, Earl (.... come on, couldn't we come up with a more creative serial killer name?) multiple times. Earl also makes Cora and Dean have sex, which neither of them want (though Dean can't help having an orgasm and Cora does get off in the last encounter, which sets off the second act turmoil). This means that Earl is raping both Dean and Cora, full stop. Dean says he was forced to rape Cora and has, understandably, a ton of conflict over it; I get this. It's a totally believable emotional reaction to what happened to him, and most of the believable emotional reactions in this book are Dean's. What bothers me is not that Cora doesn't see Dean as having raped her (an understandable response, and truly Dean was the mechanism of the rapist and not the rapist), but that NOBODY tells Dean that he was also raped. Like. Our cast of characters seems reasonably well-educated. I'm not looking for a Very Special Episode conversation, but nobody seems to emphasize to Dean "Hey, YOU WERE RAPED". It just bugs me a lot, because I got the sense that the narrative did not buy into Dean being assaulted.

Also, I'll be real... I went into this knowing there would be rape, but the amount of times Earl rapes Cora himself surprised me. It really served no narrative purpose. Obviously, I don't mind rape being a focal point of this novel, but that's where it felt gratuitous, especially because the sticking point of the trauma was what he made Dean do to Cora.

--The thing that bothered me most, however, is that from page one, Cora is better than her sister Mandy because she is not like other girls. Mandy has "bleach blond" hair, unlike Cora, who has normal gold hair. Cora loves books and keeps wanting Dean to read Of Mice and Men to get smarter, whereas Mandy is a hair stylist. (Of Mice and Men may be important, but a fun read it is not, fuck off Cora.) Mandy never got in trouble for all the bad things she did, like wrecking a car when she was a teenager, or having parties!!! Oh, and naturally, Dean actually saw and wanted Cora first when they were teens, because he likes 'em natural, unlike Mandy. Honestly man, what Cora and Dean go through is enough for me to believe in them being trauma bonded. I can believe there was an underlying attraction neither wanted to acknowledge beforehand. I don't need to see Cora uplifted as Better Than Mandy for me to believe in the love story. In fact, the more this is done, the more the love story is undermined.

--Also, Mandy is clearly a normal hot girl trying her best, but in order to again underline that she is not as good as Cora, the author has her say RIDICULOUS SHIT. Like "oh Dean, you were only held captive and tortured by a serial killer for THREE WEEKS, I'd think you'd be over it by now". "Oh Dean, why aren't we fucking yet, it's been six weeks since you were held captive by a serial killer"? Bringing up an incredibly personal thing her sister experienced and was keeping a secret in gENERAL CONVERSATION? It's like, nobody's perfect, I'm not asking for perfect Mandy, but no real person who is not clinically insane would say these things in these circumstances. And we see later than Mandy is a loving, empathetic, remarkably forgiving woman, so why was she so callous before? There's also one more gut punch thing added in that makes zero sense, and literally serves no purpose except to say "Mandy didn't deserve Dean anyway".

But every person in the book who doesn't like Cora or exists to make Cora look better acts this way. There is a conversation, in public, overheard that... Like... I'm sorry, I just don't buy two totally sane people saying this kind of shit out loud, in public, in a WORKPLACE, about a kidnapping survivor they work with. I just don't. They'd keep it to the group chat as God intended.

--Oh, and another thing: Dean and Cora developing these feelings is treated by other characters as like a "welp, I guess Mandy just needs to accept it" thing, and she has been with this man for FIFTEEN YEARS. FIFTEEN. YEARS. That's longer than many marriages! And also, if Dean was in a mid relationship for FIFTEEN YEARS and liked her sister first, why did he never make a move before being with someone for FIFTEEN YEARS and proposing to her? (While somehow, never moving in with her...?)

--Aside from this and one moment in which he says that Cora's ex cheated on her with "some floozy" (file under things a man in his early thirties would never say in the 2020s) Dean is actually really likable and his perspective was a respite. It felt like he was recovering from trauma, whereas Cora's perspective felt like she was recovering from trauma in a way that Sam Levinson would write, and not in a "this is wild I'm so entertained" episode of Euphoria. I felt bad for him. I thought that there was a lot more going on with him that needed to be unpacked, whereas Cora's issues seemed more straightforward and confronted by the text.

--This girl does something so ludicrous to aid in her recovery that I did laugh. Then I remembered she was 29.

--One more note... Like, I'm all for insulting the serial killer, but the amount of times Dean's insults of the serial killer hinged on him being fat was like? Weird to me? Romance has this thing where the villains are often fat (and it exists across subgenres) and like? Personally, if Earl was as out of shape as the book suggested (which, to be fair, you can be fat and in shape but I didn't get that vibe from Earl) I'm not certain as to how he physically defeated big and fit Dean that easily in the beginning. He's literally kidnapped and is torturing y'all on the daily, is there not a better insult than "fat"?

--Weird note, but there is a "joke" Cora played on Dean referenced several times in which she told a college friend of his coming to town that Dean had a crush on him, then slipped Dean Viagra while telling him it was aspirin so he was popping a boner around this friend the whole night. This is treated as funny. That is not only pretty much sexual assault and definitely drugging someone; it's homophobic? How do I root for this woman?

The Sex Stuff:

The (consensual) sex scenes were well written. The sexual assault scenes are a lot more vague, as they should be. I respect the way the non-consensual scenes between Dean an d Cora were written. It's a hard balance to strike, and I'm sympathetic to that as a writer--you don't want to titillate, but you do have to communicate that there was just a seismic shift and realization for our leads.

Look, I didn't like this, and I went in thinking "I'm the type of reader who can handle this book". And I could handle all the dark shit. I just couldn't handle how much the text bent over backwards to uplift the heroine and trash her sister. Sincerely, if this book works for you, go with God, I am not judging. It just didn't for me.

i’m ordinarily in favor of reading/watching/etc things in order of production/release order rather than “chronological” order, since that usually will give you the best understanding of what audiences/creators were experiencing. like, prequels happen “before” the main stories they’re related to, but since they’re created after those original works, they’re able to react to them whereas the original works obviously can’t react to the prequels. does that make sense?

anyway, the reason i didn’t do that in this case is because i wasn’t sure how many of the drizzt books i was going to read, and if i only read one series i definitely wanted it to be the dark elf trilogy based on everything i had heard about it, so that felt like the right place to start and if i got to any of the other books, great! so yeah, that’s how we ended up here.

frankly, i’m pretty glad i read them in the order i did, because i’m not sure i would’ve read another drizzt book if this were my first? like, don’t get me wrong. it’s not bad per se, but it definitely didn’t hook me the way the first two books of the dark elf trilogy did. i’m guessing that’s a function of the fact that drizzt was meant to be a mere supporting player in r.a. salvatore’s original plans, and frankly i’m just kinda not really into wulfgar? i’m somewhat seriously considering just reading spoilers for the other two books in this trilogy and moving on to legacy of the drow, which i’m to understand has a lot more stuff in it that i’ll like. we’ll see!

oh, to end on a positive note. there was some super kinky shit in the background of this, so that was awesome. i have no idea if it was intentional or not, but tbh it’s happened often enough in these books that i’m willing to assume it is, and obviously my take on that is pretty much “fuck yeah!”
