I’m generally pretty good at accepting that there are many things some people might like in fiction that I don’t, but I cannot wrap my mind around people writing aus where a certain demographic of people are systematically denied rights. I see it most often with ABO stuff or little/caregiver stuff, and it’s always like people are biologically born a certain way and get treated like second class citizens. Why do you want this. Like what is anyone getting out of writing this. I mean, this is just real life how people with disabilities are treated, and if you wanted to explore that, then you could just write about disabled people? Why are you creating this whole world where there’s a new group of people who aren’t allowed to have jobs or own property or whatever. What is the point.

A lot of people seem absolutely convinced that Neo is going to die this volume, and that she’ll deserve it, and I have to be honest I don’t at all understand the reasoning behind that. I get that a lot of people see her actions as irredeemable, and want her to suffer the consequences for it, but that level of vengeance-seeking is entirely how Neopolitan got into the situation she’s in to begin with, and is kinda ironic to wish upon her for one, and would kinda skew the narrative and messages if Team RWBY + J end up taking that path.

To add onto that I also really don’t think it would be a satisfying conclusion to her arc if that were the case, the message that vengeance only leads to suffering and bad ends has already been made pretty obvious with Watts, Cinder, Salem and current-episode Neo for one, and while I get that it may be saved for more plot-relevant characters like Cinder and Salem, wouldn’t Neo’s arc of suffering over the loss of a loved one and seeking vengeance make a lot more sense and be a lot more satisfying if it proved that it’s possible to move on, to find purpose again and to find other people to love and support you? Not to mention it would work well with RWBY’s arc of proving heroes do exist, and people can be saved. It seems that way to me atleast.

As a final note, the idea of ‘deserving’ redemption has aways kinda been a shaky one, but operating under that logic I’m fully convinced that Neo deserves that chance. Having read Roman Holiday it becomes blatantly obvious that every person she’s ever known beyond basic formalities has been a bad influence and arguably bad people themselves, or someone that’s treated her with ableism and/or not like a person at all, (which makes her current fate as a mouthpiece and puppet for CC all the more messed up), her parents, Lady Beat, The Malachite Twins and as much as it pains me, Roman himself, (although he’s the only person to ever treat Neo with respect, so I’d argue he gets a pass). The only good influence that comes to mind in Neo’s entire life has been the ex-huntress that taught her for about two pages in the book. Neo has never had a chance, so the main reason I think she ‘deserves’ redemption is that it’s hardly redemption at all, that implies a second chance, but it isn’t, it’s Neo’s first.
