Hyuuga Neji briefly looked up from the mission report he had been working on, wanting to confirm that the person asking the question was really Konoha’s weapon mistress and his teammate of ten years, Tenten.

Receiving a visual confirmation, he proceeded to return to his interrupted work. “Wherever she wants to go.”

A distinct groan came from her direction, followed by slow pencil scratches on the paper. He then sensed her pause, as if she was soundlessly going over what she had written. She must have been dissatisfied, based on the furious sound of her rubber eraser that followed.

“That’s what a longtime married husband will say.”

“But doesn’t dating lead to marriage anyway?” He had taken his parents’ counsel into his heart that he would only ask a woman out if he knew she was someone he could introduce to his clan the following day.

To which the kunoichi burst out laughing. “Oh, Neji,” she sighed while wiping an imaginary tear in her eye. “You really are the purest thing in the world.”

He let her teasing go. As he has always had. “That is my answer, though— my only one. And why are you asking something like this all of a sudden anyway?”

“It’s a task from Tsunade-sama,” explained Tenten, playing nimbly with the pencil. “We seriously need more shinobi missions so she thought we’ll advertise our services with a lighthearted article on our hottest bachelors who happen to also be working as a nin.”

“Hottest… bachelors…”

“Yep. Uchiha Sasuke’s in it of course, or the village riots. Then there’s Naruto, Shikamaru, Lee, Chouji…” she rattled off, eyes dancing in mirth. He couldn’t tell if she was truly into the idea because her personal goddess and idol decreed it, or if she was just entertained at the thought of her male colleagues being paraded before thirsty audiences.

“...and of course, there’s you,” she continued, winking at him. “I’m in charge of writing yours and Lee’s profiles, and thankfully his answers aren’t as boring as yours.”

His brows furrowed. “I’m not changing my answer, Tenten.”

She looked like she expected to hear that. With a resigned smile, Tenten picked up her pencil and poised it to write. “Well, can you tell me why you answered that, at least? Just so it won’t come across in the article as too cold and uninterested… even if that’s sort of what you’re going for here, I think.”

“It’s because I want us to go to a place that makes her happy,” he explained matter-of-factly. “Her being happy makes me happy, too.”

She tapped her chin. “Well, that kinda makes sense. Not all women like candlelit dinners… I mean, I don’t.”

“I know. A weapon museum or a visit to a renowned smither might be more up your speed.”

“I feel you’re making fun of my weapon geekery, but that... actually sounds like a really cool, fun date.” Realizing her laughably sincere undertone, she coughed self-consciously. “M-Moving on. So… Neji?”

He let out a deep sigh. “It’s not just one question?”

“It’s an article, Neji, not an Instagram caption. Anyway...” She picked up her clipboard and read the next question aloud. “How would you dress up to impress the girl you like?”

“I am thoroughly confused as to how this will sell our skills as a shinobi…”

“Tsunade-sama is selling you guys as a complete package. Saving the world while looking wicked good, and all that jazz. Now, your answer, please?”

He frowned thoughtfully. “I honestly do not know. I feel that I can offer more than my understanding of what fashion is on trend, and that what I do have will better stand the test of time—” his words trailed off when he saw the growing Cheshire cat-like smile on the kunoichi’s face. “I said something boring again, didn’t I?”

“Ah no, not at all. But I think you should seriously consider part-timing as a Q&A writer in the beauty pageant circuit.”

“That is my only—”

“Yes, yes. That is your only answer and you won’t change it, that’s why— see? I’m jotting everything down, Neji!” She flashed her scribbles to his face. He couldn’t help but notice numerous smileys on some of his responses, along with her annotations like ‘too pure!’ and ‘must protect’.

“Indulge me then,” he said as he nudged the notepad away from his face. “How would you like your date to dress up for you?”

“Hmm.” She shut her eyes momentarily, busily putting together an image of her mystery date that would spark joy in her. “I always see guys in traditional attire and dirty combat clothing, so maybe something immaculately crisp, and clean, and pressed, and tailored like a suit would be nice. Something black, maybe? I don’t know much about fashion either, but I’m pretty sure black will never go out of style. Plus they hide sweat marks.”

He tapped his finger on her transcript. “Maybe you can put that in instead. Would that be something your readers will be able to relate more with?”

She waved her hand dismissively. “Nah. We have to accurately represent you, lest they’ll be disappointed that you’re actually a boring old man stuck in a beautiful eighteen-year-old man’s body.”

“Beautiful, huh?”

“That’s what everyone says,” she quickly clarified. “A-And well, they aren’t exactly wrong, you know.” She knew and had acknowledged since childhood that Neji was blessed with striking looks that men and women would both envy, so why was it so hard for her to compliment him as friends naturally would?

“Good enough.” He did look utterly satisfied by her response, in any case. She let out another cough to jolt her focus back into her interview.

Neji frowned. “You should really have that checked. You’ve been coughing quite a lot this morning.”

“I’M. FINE.”

“As you say.”

“Here’s the last question.” Tenten was relieved that her first-ever non-combat investigation/interrogation is finally coming to an end.

“Please.” He looked at her earnestly and with unadulterated attentiveness, even with the full knowledge that he was participating in something he would typically never give a modicum of his time any other day.

And there it was again— the feeling of embarrassed, even shy awkwardness welling within her once more.

It wasn’t him at fault, of course— Neji was just being the usual Neji. It was her and her ridiculous, assumptive, and overactive imagination that was making the exchange more awkwardly embarrassing than it should be.

She vigorously shook her head. “What is… your ideal girl like?”

He seemed to hesitate, which surprised her because he had always been comfortable enough with her to share his rarely-seen, most candid thoughts.

Despite herself, her body leaned in closer, breath bated in anticipation for an answer she never knew she was dying to know till that moment.

Then he finally spoke.

“You.”

Her forehead creased. “M-Me?” she asked, slowly pointing a finger at herself

He nodded.

“OH! Well, let’s see… the interview is about you, Neji, but as for me, my ideal woman is—” She paused. That doesn’t make sense, does it?

Neji looked unimpressed by her utter lack of wits.

Her heart was starting to race so fast that her mind barely registered the sound of her pad and pencil dropping to the floor. She smiled nervously, willing herself not to think of a prospect that might turn out to be nothing but a grossly embarrassing misunderstanding.

“I-I see. S-So you mean, s-someone *l-like* me, right?” she managed to ask amidst her rattled stammering. “Outdoorsy, geeky, failure of all things domestic…”

He rose from his seat and walked towards her station. “You misunderstand.”

Oh, shoot. Of course, I did. Her heart sank, willing the floor to swallow her whole right now.

Neji stopped in front of her, knelt down to collect her things, then gently returned them to her trembling hands.

“My ideal woman,” he spoke tenderly yet resolutely, “is you, Tenten. Not someone like you, but you specifically. And no one else comes close.”

Eh?

Her mind, usually a dizzying uninterruptible hurricane of cracks and banter, froze. Then Neji’s words started to echo in her mind— over and over pounding it into her brain, which at that moment was still stuck in self-preserving, in-denial defense mode.

That was when she felt his palm rest on top of her head. He brushed her hair calmingly, almost apologetically.

“I am not asking for a reply because this isn’t a confession,” he said gently. “You asked a question, and I simply answered it. Nothing has to change.”

“B-But Neji…”

He continued to speak. “What I feel for you is my business, not yours. Do not concern yourself over it.”

With that, he withdrew his hand and stepped back to retrieve his things. His face was mellower than usual: apparent even with the long, dark, soft curtain draping over his side profile.

“Thank you for your hard work. Take care on your way home, Tenten.” He gave her a small, courteous bow before walking past her.

Neji was long gone before the kunoichi could trust herself to speak again.

“How do you expect me to print this now, stupid Neji,” she groaned exasperatedly while looking at her teammate’s now-empty work desk.

In the end, Tenten did decide to run his profile. And despite not topping the list (it was the Uchiha, of course, or the village riots), the Hyuuga’s piece was truly a hit among the readers.

The man himself, though, was still questioning how exactly the piece demonstrates his competence, and more importantly, his dignity as a Jounin-ranked shinobi.

It would be easy to imagine that after participating on a reality show, one either returns to television via all-star spin-offs like the Challenge or simply resumes their “normal” life. A recent article in the New York Times about Real World: New Orleans alum Preston Roberson-Charles, however, highlights the difficulties cast members can face after filming. After some of his particularly unflattering behavior made air, he received a lot of negative feedback — but more importantly, his mistakes were now searchable online. The digital footprint of his time on the show made it almost impossible for him to find a job, leaving him homeless for two years. While an extreme example, his story did not surprise me; as a former cast member on the MTV reality show circuit, I have seen dozens of participants experience similar consequences after their time in the spotlight.

At 18 years old, I was cast on The Real World’s sister show, Road Rules, and ultimately participated in seven seasons of MTV reality programs. For me, a white, perky blonde, the show provided an income, adventure, and (mostly) positive attention. Most of my seasons were filmed before the rise of social media, and I largely avoided being GIFed and memed. Participants who are portrayed as aggressive, promiscuous, or villainous, however, can struggle upon returning to their life, leaving them caught in the strange state of being semi-famous, yet alone. And people who lack financial resources or misbehave on the show (at the not-so-subtle behest of producers) are often forced to choose between entering the cycle of reality appearances or risk financial devastation. We don’t hear the stories of reality TV trauma, though, unless they end up in a “Where Are They Now?” listicle or their mugshot or death announcement makes it onto TMZ.

Some cast members experience financial woes, health issues, professional frustrations, and substance abuse relating to their appearance on television, and are left with few resources to handle the challenges (no pun intended). This is particularly true for people of color, LGBT folks, and women on the shows who are often portrayed as accessories to the main event, while the white, straight, cis men are heralded as the shows’ unofficial heroes and mascots.

The mythology of reality tv begins with Mary-Ellis Bunim, the executive producer of soap operas like As the World Turns, teaming up with news producer Jon Murray who pitched a documentary-style program by promising, “[Producers] were not going to step in. We will chronicle what happens to [the cast].” The mix of soap opera drama with documentary voyeurism was a hit.

The Real World made a name for itself as a groundbreaking documentary series, both in its inclusion of people from underrepresented groups and its unflinching portrayal of controversial subjects including abortion, gay rights, and racism. The early seasons included the show’s signature drama, but seemed to have a higher cultural purpose. The creation of its competition spinoff coupled with the mainstream success of Survivor and other series changed the tone and direction of the franchise. Producers felt the pressure, and cast members paid the price.

Producers control every aspect of the filming environment, and when they perceive a lull in the action, they accuse us of being boring and “not making the most of the experience” — which is code for: “Do something interesting.” These implicit directives lead to fights, hookups, and bullying among the cast.

When placed in an environment where bad behavior is incentivized, cast members often exhibit unsavory behavior, and the magic of editing exaggerates the high-intensity personalities. If the behavior is scandalous enough there can be consequences in terms of professional viability and personal relationships in real life, but those concerns seem insignificant from inside the bubble. Additionally, cast members receive mixed signals regarding their behavior. Contracts include punishments for violence, yet the physical and verbal fights that arise are used to promote the show. Furthermore, violent cast members are often invited to return for subsequent seasons. What is punished in the moment is often rewarded in the long run.

Much of the drama, violence, and sexual activity on The Real World and The Challenge results from heavy on-set alcohol consumption. Producers forbid the use of recreational items like books, phones, computers, playing cards, and crossword puzzles, but they provide virtually unlimited amounts of alcohol, which creates a frat-house atmosphere that naturally acts as a lubricant for hookups and other shocking antics. This party lifestyle isn’t restricted to the house, however, as high-profile cast members are sometimes paid thousands of dollars to do “bar and club appearances” after their show airs.

Nate Blackburn, who appeared on The Real World: Seattle, claims his wild on-camera persona as the life-of-the party bled into his real life. He felt pressure from fans to be an exaggerated version of himself off the air, which led him into years of drug addiction and alcoholism. “Drinking and being funny and just being wild was my identity from of the show, and people knew that,” Blackburn says. He also describes a deep insecurity that he would hide with drugs and alcohol. “I felt like if people really knew who I was, they wouldn’t like me…so I had to put on that mask.” Blackburn eventually got clean, and now works full-time helping other people get sober.

Not all cast members are as lucky as Blackburn, however, as the deaths of Joey Kovar (The Real World: Hollywood) and Ryan Knight (The Real World: New Orleans) demonstrate. Kovar told the Chicago Tribune that part of the reason he was cast on the show was because of his “honesty about using drugs and partying,” which raises questions about the ethics of such a casting decision. Knight also struggled with addiction, and ultimately died of an accidental overdose after filming Season 26 of the Challenge. According to a source quoted in the Boston Herald, ‘“He felt stuck, like he was just waiting for the next Challenge.”’

The system of recycling the cast members like Knight who provide the best (and most scandalous) storylines encourages the individuals with the fewest resources in real life to misbehave as a means of job security. The “all-star” re-casting process occurs on numerous competitive reality shows like Survivor, The Bachelor, Top Chef, and RuPaul’s Drag Race, and if participants see reality television as their only potential income, they are more likely to behave in a way that will ensure future invitations. That behavior is also what makes it more difficult for them to thrive in the (real) real world, creating a vicious cycle.

The producers of these shows are also under pressure to stand out in an ever-growing sea of entertainment (reality tv and otherwise), so they must continuously up the ante to ensure “the most dramatic rose ceremony ever” or “the most difficult final challenge.” To create drama, producers often push cast members to their physical and emotional breaking point.

The physical challenges, while exhilarating and potentially financially rewarding, have their drawbacks, and they leave many participants with injuries that extend beyond filming. In the last few Challenge seasons alone there have been broken bones, a ruptured spleen, dislocated fingers, and one person was knocked unconscious, fell 30 feet into water, and was filmed floating lifeless until he was pulled out and taken to the hospital (this was used as a promotional clip for several weeks before airing). “Minor” injuries are treated with ibuprofen and eyerolls from some producers who refer to contestants who request care as “high maintenance.” The “perfect” injury requires an ambulance (great for on-air suspense), but doesn’t result in a lawsuit or death. Less severe injuries interfere with production, but don’t provide story.

One participant who experienced a life-changing injury was Tim Beggy, who originally appeared on the second season of Road Rules and returned for several seasons of the Challenge. Beggy was an accomplished marathoner, triathlete, and Ironman competitor. That all ended, however, after a Challenge elimination round gone wrong. He was placed in a enclosed triple-pane glass box suspended in the air and, to win that week’s challenge, had to punch his way out faster than his opponent. Beggy explains, “I don’t believe the game was tested properly…because as the broken glass piled up, it chewed through the ‘protective’ gear, and turned my knees and patellar tendons into hamburger meat. For up to a year later, I would get large bumps on my knees, pop them, and glass would come out. I went from a guy running marathons to the old man limping from one ill-fated Inferno.”

For many, however, the worst pain is not physical, with many cast members experiencing emotional and psychological difficulties related to their time on television. I am among the many who was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety due to my time on the show and a violent encounter with a cast member off-set. My psychologist equated the experience of filming the show to the Stanford Prison Experiment, which explored questions of power, torture, and relationships using unethical means. But because television shows are under no obligation to be ethical, the methodology of their social experiment is designed to create the same effects without concern for the well-being of the participants. Other cast members have experienced PTSD as well, and Frank Sweeney (Real World: San Diego) sought counseling after the show (an option less available for cast members from lower socio-economic backgrounds) and said coming off the roller coaster of tv created a “complex post-traumatic stress disorder.”

Beyond addiction, injuries, and mental health concerns, cast members encounter logistical difficulties. Some legally changed their names, others paid to have their Google search results scrubbed, and many avoid social media in an effort to regain control of their lives, careers, and identities. Some were told by potential employers that they were not hired because they appeared on the show. In an age of branding, many companies don’t want to be associated with “trashy” tv stars. I was told I was rejected from a law school despite having competitive scores and credentials, because my presence would be a distraction to the other students and would “lessen the credibility” of the institution.

Reality creators often frame the experience as an “opportunity” for participants and a “springboard” to bigger and better things. Unfortunately, for many of us, it’s a springboard into an empty pool. At best, our time in the spotlight becomes a story we’re forced to retell at cocktail parties. But having an edited version of your best and worst moments on national television can leave some participants vulnerable to financial and emotional ruin. For many of your favorite tv “characters,” things don’t truly start “getting real” until they are home picking up the pieces of the reality wreckage without a camera crew to document it.

The casual viewer may imagine that being on a reality show is just a parenthetical aside within the larger story of someone’s regular life — a brief, if exciting, pause from the narrative, from which you can quickly resume normalcy. The truth is that these experiences are our real life. They aren’t separate. We form relationships and rivalries and experience pain and redemption, and it’s all on the public stage. People aren’t interested in listening to z-listers bellyache about the difficulties of being famous for nothing, but the reality (!) is that producers and networks get rich off the personal narratives of the casts then leave them worse off than they found them. We become your memes and gifs while we’re being diagnosed with PTSD and filing for bankruptcy. Your guilty pleasure is our literal reality, and it’s unseemly to whine about the price we pay — even if the experience leaves us broke and broken. As it turns out, fifteen minutes of fame can be expensive.

Reflection:

Growing up I have always been inclined to areas of the criminal field, watching every single episode of Law and Order. It wasn’t easy deciding a career for myself. After years of consideration, I finally chose a career that would suit me best. Once I graduate from Kutztown University I plan on attending law school. Using the article “7 Powerful Questions to Find Out What you Want to do with your Life” by Scott Christs, helped me discover which career path suits me best. One of the things that I am most passionate about is becoming successful. When I am passionate about something it makes it easier to achieve. When I work on things that I am passionate about such as work-related to my major it doesn't feel like work. Going to law school will be enormous amounts of work but in the end, it will lead to a successful career.

One of my greatest accomplishments in life so far is going to college, once finished my bachelor's degree going to law school would also go on my list of greatest accomplishments. Being a lawyer entails helping and defending many clients, one thing I personally like to do is help others. If my career is based on helping people I don't think I will ever get sick of doing it. Lawyers have a median pay of $120,000 per year. For some people, they don't choose a career path based on the amount of money they are going to earn, but for me, it was a big part of choosing a career path. I personally know that there are things in life that I want that cost a lot of money, so finding a job with a large salary was ideal. My parents always struggled with money growing up so that is something that I don't want my children to have to deal with.

The person I admire the most is my mom because she works so hard to give my family everything. My mom has worked two jobs for as long as I can remember, and I know that I never want to have to do that. I chose a career with a high salary so that I can take care of my mom in the future the way that she has taken care of me my whole life. One thing I hate doing is math, this is another reason why I chose a career with minimal or basic level math skills. Growing up as a competitive dancer I have always worked hard to achieve my goals, which has given me many years of experience in working hard for a specific goal. If I love the work that I'm doing it is not hard for me to be successful in that field. Over the years I have gained interpersonal skills, writing skills, and speaking skills through previous job. All of these skills are all very important qualities in a lawyer.

Career Summary:

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the entry on “Lawyers”, a lawyer's job entails communicating with clients, judges, and co-workers. Lawyers represent clients in a trial and adduce evidence to defend the client. Lawyers deal with many legal documents, along with interpreting laws and other rules. The job of a lawyer is to advise and defend the client.

There are many different types of lawyers depending on who the lawyer is representing. There are criminal law attorneys, defense attorneys, public defense attorneys, government counsels, corporate counsels, and public interest lawyers. Not only are there different industries in the legal field lawyers can also specialize in a particular field such as tax law, environmental law, property law, family law, and security law. Lawyers tend to mostly work in the office but in some cases, it is necessary for the lawyer to travel to prisons and hospitals.

In most cases, lawyers work more than 40 hours of the week, with extra pressure during trials. To become a lawyer a bachelor's degree is required along with passing the Law School Admission Test. Once accepted into law school three additional years is required to complete the degree. After law school it is required that graduated law students pass the Bar exam, the Bar exam is only valid for the state that you take it in. For example, if a law student takes the bar in Pennsylvania they cannot become a lawyer in New York unless they take the exam for that state. Some important skills needed to be a lawyer are analytical, interpersonal, problem-solving, speaking and writing skills.

In May of 2018, the median pay for lawyers was $120,000 per year. Lawyers who work for the federal government average to make the most at $145,000 a year, with local government lawyers at $94,000, and state government lawyers at $86,000. In the next 10 years, the projected career growth for lawyers is 6%. Large corporations are increasing their numbers of lawyers working within the corporation to lower costs. Even though there are many jobs in this field, the field is still somewhat saturated due to more students graduating from law school than there are jobs available. As of 2018, there were 823,900 lawyers and it is expected that by 2028 there will be 874,000 lawyers.

To better understand the article discussed above, I scheduled an interview with a lawyer already working in the field.

Interview Summary:

For my interview, I chose to interview my family law professor Karl Maehrer. Karl is a full-time professor at Kutztown University but also works as a lawyer. Karl and I discussed how he decided to become a lawyer and it was definitely not an answer I was expecting. Karl told me that he went to undergrad for pre-med and then went to law school. He said that after undergrad he got a job working in the law field, working around many attorneys. Karl liked the atmosphere and was interested in learning about the law.

I proceeded to ask Karl what the hardest part about law school was, he responded that the most difficult thing about law school is the intense amount of workload. Although the work might not always be difficult work, the assignments are tedious and very time-consuming. Karl and I then discussed the typical work environment of a lawyer, he told me about the small environment in which he works, he has one paralegal who does her work efficiently. Karls believes keeping his office small helps keep a positive and more manageable work atmosphere.

Next, I tried to get an idea of what a lawyer does on a day to day basis. Karl stated that he typically works the files meaning he contacts each client once a week to touch base and see where the client is at in the case, he also works full time as a paralegal professor. I then wanted to discuss the hardest change from law school to working as an actual lawyer. According to Karl, in law school, they don't teach you everything you need to know in the practice of law. Although they teach you how to apply the law, there are procedures followed in court, such as presenting your case in front of a judge that they don't prepare you well for. Karl believes that he knew the law but had very little experience presenting cases in front of judges. Next, I was looking for one piece of advice a lawyer would give a future law student. Karl said that he would have taken more classes to prepare him for law school, and that going into law school, professors expect you to already know how to do certain things like briefing a case.

Following that question, I asked Karl a more difficult question. I asked Karl how he would help a case that he is morally opposed to, Karls response was “ You concentrate on the fact that you are representing somebody and it may not be the most favorable position, but it is our duty to represent them the best that we can.” I told Karl I probably would have answered that question the same way. I was curious to know if Karl knew of any current events in the legal field. Being that the legal field is so large, Karl wasn’t able to think of any specific events. I had recently read that the legal field is becoming more saturated, meaning that more people are graduating from law school than there are jobs available. I decided to ask Karl how hard it was for him to find a job after law school. He told me that after law school he went to a few interviews and had a few job offers after the first round of interviews. He was surprised to find out that today the field is more competitive than when he was a student.

Karl and I then discussed how he prepared himself for law school, he stated that he did very little to prepare because he didn't know what to expect so he didn't know how to prepare. I then moved on to day to day life as a law student, Karl told me everyday students were expected to briefcases, prepare outlines for classes, read every day, and take basic exams. Next, I got an answer that I wasn’t quite expecting. I asked what a person has to look forward to next in their career after becoming a lawyer. I was expecting an answer of promotions and raises, but Karls's answer was the feeling you get from helping people successfully prosecute their case. I was then curious as to how someone who went through law school prepared for the LSAT and the Bar exam. I asked Karl and he told me that he just bought a review book and a practice exam book and used those because he didn't know any other way to prepare himself.

One of my biggest fears that go along with going to law school is the LSAT and Bar exam. I asked Karl and he said that he passed both exams on the first try, which somewhat put me at ease. Lastly, I asked Karl what is one thing you are expected to already know to go into law school? His response was how to brief a case, this response also put me at ease because we do a lot of practices on how to brief cases in classes with Karl. I learned a lot from my interview with Karl and I am more at ease about the difficulties of law school.

To better understand the duties and responsibilities of a lawyer I found a current event article to provide insight on how critical the role of a public figure can be.

Current Event:

I chose an article titled “Kansas Federal Judge Resigns After Sexual Misconduct Allegations”. This article interests me for a few reasons. The first reason this article interests me is that it is pertinent to the field in which I am interested in pursuing. I believe that this article displays how critical allegations can be towards well known public figures. Another thing that interests me about this topic is that people in very powerful positions use their power to manipulate the people below them. In this article, Judge Carlos Murguia of the District of Kansas was found to sexually harass his female employees. Due to Judge Murguias’ high esteem, his female employees were disinclined to come forward and ask him to stop. I chose this topic because the article directly relates to the type of field I intend to follow. This topic also stood out to me due to the many separate allegations included at the end of the article. Although many allegations are made towards judges, it is unlikely that the allegations will be made public. I also found this article interesting because it says that even when judges are found to be guilty of sexual misconduct allegations, they typically receive little to no repercussions.

This article relates to my chosen career path in multiple ways. I intend to be a lawyer, so although this article is mainly about judges, the females who are said to be getting sexually harassed in the article are mainly the law clerks. Once students graduate law school, they usually become law clerks for a judge to gain experience eventually rising to become a lawyer. As shown in the article the judges like Judge Murguia use their higher authority to take advantage of the female employees surrounding them.

From this article, I have learned that although allegations aren’t always public knowledge, it occurs more than one would think. In this article, it discusses Judge Murguia’s resignation, before he resigned a congressional committee hearing was held. I learned that the purpose of the congressional committee hearing was to protect judicial employees from sexual harassment. Another thing I learned from this article is that having a well-established title as a judge can be very difficult to maintain. While Judge Murguia was under investigation for sexual assault, he was also found to have an affair with someone who used drugs and was on probation. Due to this, the judge was also found to have made himself vulnerable to extortion. Not only do judges have to be cautious of their actions in the workplace, but they also have to be cautious of who they associate themselves with outside of the workplace.

There are still a few things I would like to learn. This article talks mainly about Judge Murguia's resignation, but it does not discuss any further charges against him. He was forced to resign but will he have any other repercussions for using his high levels of power to sexually harass his employees working under him. Another thing I would like to learn is what is Judge Murguia going to do next? With the accusations found to be true what in the other jobs in the legal field could Judge Murguia now be hired for? Is Judge Murguia blacklisted from employment in the legal field or is he able to find another job with lower esteem than a federal judge?

On the morning of Sept 14, 2011 my sister woke me up at home asking me where my car was. I went outside to discover my vehicle was gone. So I call the police to come and take a report but of course there wasn't enough officers on duty to send one out so I wake up my brother to get a ride to the station. So I hurry to call them but of course they were closed until 8am. At 8am I call them they said bring my ID and insurance info to recover the vehicle. I go down there and ask questions but they told me they weren't allowed to disclose any information about who, what, were, or when the incident occurred because of confidentiality. They told me I would have to pay the towing and storage fee to recover my car from the impound. So I left and went to the impound paid $218.00 to discover that my vehicle had been totaled. So I had it towed to my house where I called the insurance company to report this. After I reported this incident they took a recorded statement and gave me a claim number. I waited for 2days for my adjuster to call me back and he never did. about 2 weeks later my adjuster calls and leaves me a message saying he needed another recorded statement and to call him back. I call back and got his voice mail. I spoke to one of his colleagues and they said they would send him and his manager a memo to call me back..well that never happened. 1 week after that I get a packet in the mail asking for my cell phone records, keys to the vehicle, and a notarized affidavit. I sent these things back and then a detective from the insurance company calls me and said there were red flags and he needed to get a video recorded statement. I agreed and went to give the statement. A few days later a detective from the police department where my car was recovered from calls me and tells me that my youngest son's father was with some friends at a nightclub were a drive-by shooting occurred and my son's father wasn't shot but the young man he was with was and as a result of them trying to escape the scene my car was crashed. As they arrived to the scene and asked questions about what happened my son's father would not admit he was driving the vehicle, and because they didn't actually see him driving or pull him over they could not prosecute. The detective asked me did I know anything about this incident and I replied hell no! The night of the incident my son's father had came to my house around 3am but never mentioned anything of course because he knows I would have tried to kill him. He also knows I would have been pissed because I never let him drive my car for the 3 years that I have known him, he has never had a license. She ask me was it ok to list him as a suspect and I told her Yes! I let her know that he did not have permission to drive my car under any circumstances. The very next day the detective from the insurance company called me and ask me what was my son's father name and what where the numbers that where called on my cell phone records. He asked why did he call me at 2:54am, I explained he wanted to let me know he was on his way over which wasn't out of the ordinary for him to do. So then the detective tells me my story stinks and I need to withdraw my claim because on my interview I didn't disclose that my boyfriend had come to my house. I told him why did I need to disclose who was sleeping in my bed if it had nothing to do with my car. I mean we know now he had something to do with it but I didn't know then. He told me the police detective also had the keys to my car which was a lie. It clearly states on the impound record that they had no keys. Not to mention the car has broken locks and loose wires I guess he didn't read that part of the report. He also told me I was trying to cover for my son's dad to get the car covered. I told him he could arrest him for GTA for all I care. My car was stolen and no matter who stole it I'm the victim and of course I want my car covered. I gave the attending ER doctor all information including I had drank beer an hour before I got there. We just recently got health insurance a few weeks ago. My husband was diagnosed with a double inguinal hernia yesterday and is scheduled for surgery Friday.
