RWBY COMBAT ANALYSIS: THE RUSTED KNIGHT
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry, I… I know I’m not okay. I- I’m not right, but… How am I supposed to be…? I’ve been alone… for SO… LONG! Here… On that bridge… I was the only one that could do it! I was the ONLY ONE! And I… And now I have to live with that forever… In here or back home…”
PHYSICAL
After falling into the Ever After during the Atlas exodus, Jaune Arc stumbled across a Clockwork Orange, an item that forcibly sent him back in time.  Unable to return to the present, Jaune was forced to spend the subsequent years braving the dangers of the Ever After as he awaited Team RWBY to finally join him, eventually taking up the alias of the Rusted Knight, a supposedly fantastical character of the fairy tale The Girl Who Fell Through the World.  By the time he finally reunited with his friends, Jaune had spent anywhere from ten to twenty years in the Ever After, placing him in his early-to-late thirties during the events of Volume 9.  While ostensibly still in his physical prime, Jaune’s aging was far from graceful, his blonde hair and beard streaked with gray and his weathered features betraying the trials of his tenure.  His mental strain was even more pronounced, his failure to revive Penny Polendina driving him into an obsessive preoccupation with protecting those around him, latching on to keeping the Paper Pleasers intact despite their frequent attempts at Ascension.
Despite his premature aging, Jaune still retained his athletic viability as the Rusted Knight, continuing to demonstrate his exceptional strength and agility.  His physical might was sufficient to overpower Jabberwalkers on a fairly regular basis and even stagger the Curious Cat with physical combat after the creature possessed the body of Neopolitan.  While still disinclined to employ acrobatics, Rusted Jaune was quick on his feet, covering ground with running charges and employing balanced footwork and evasions to keep his target in his crosshairs.  Furthermore, he grew into an exceptional equestrian and mounted warrior, expertly working alongside his jackalope mount Juniper on multiple occasions.  Though he failed to catch the Curious Cat before it could possess Neo’s body and was later overpowered by the Furious Cat, this is no sign of weakness in either area given the Afteran’s overwhelming physical might.  Where Jaune's athletic performance differed the most was in his dexterity and reflexes, something he was forced to develop in response to his damaged weapon and no doubt honed by his experience in the Ever After.  With a much shorter blade than he was used to, Jaune was forced to rely more on technique and precision when fighting than brute force, targeting the weakest link and striking accurately.
Tumblr media
Regarding Jaune's physical tolerances, he remained an extremely capable endurance fighter, focusing through hits and continuing to fight afterwards.  During the battle with the Curious Cat, Jaune soaked up several major hits from the Cat and was later accidentally hurled from the arena by Weiss, yet he was only minorly disabled by this, regaining his feet and continuing to provide tactical support for Weiss, Blake and Yang.  It was only after the Cat transformed into the Furious Cat, it’s exceptionally more powerful form, and struck Jaune square in the chest that his Aura broke and he was out of the fight.  During his time as the Rusted Knight, he was noted for multiple harrowing adventures that tested his mettle, and he was even able to survive being poisoned by Alyx despite having little in the way of medical attention.  However, Jaune's stamina was surprisingly cut short in his elder state.  While he did not burn out immediately, he was still subdued at the Tree far quicker than his allies, his Aura breaking before any of theirs had even flickered.  Far more detrimental was Jaune’s mental fortitude.  While his will to persevere and fight remained indominable, his previous failures left him with an obsession with protecting his charges, leaving him anxious and prone to angered outbursts.  However, despite his limited composure, the Rusted Knight retained his dogged determination even when under duress, and pushing him to the point of no return would be an uphill battle for anyone.
Despite the severe state of disrepair it had fallen into, Jaune’s armor remained strong and effective, and had in fact been further supplemented with additional plating.  The cuirass was upgraded to provide greater coverage over his abdomen, while his pauldrons were replaced with a heavier set, though the gauntlets remained unchanged.  He added to this with a full helmet, greaves, tassets, and a codpiece, under which he wore a gambeson and beige trousers.
RANKING: Tier 2, Peak Human Fitness
Tumblr media
Despite his less than graceful aging and deteriorating mental health, the Rusted Knight has not actually underperformed significantly in the realm of physical ability, and he still solidly qualifies for Peak Human Fitness.  He is a battle-hardened endurance fighter who leverages his strongest attributes for maximum effect, supplementing his grounded stalwart posture with solid mobility and top-notch equipment.  In fact, I'd argue that Jaune’s upgraded armor serves as a solid compromise for his undercut stamina and discipline by bolstering his native durability.  The Rusted Knight may be at greater risk of breaking than he once was, but the only way to put him down would be to shatter him completely.
MARTIAL
Tumblr media
As the Rusted Knight, Jaune Arc continued to carry Crocea Mors as his primary weapon, but time and damage had taken a significant toll on it.  The blade of the sword was snapped in half as a result of his confrontation with Cinder Fall, reducing its length to barely over a foot.  Far more noticeable was the severe degree of rust and wear on the blade and shield, with numerous pits and scratches had made their way into the metal.  However, despite this long-term damage, the weapon set retained its combative reliability, as the sword remained sharp enough to dispatch Jaune’s opponents, while the mechanisms allowing the shield to convert into Jaune’s scabbard remained unaffected.  Overall, looks are deceiving, and Crocea Mors remains a lethal killing tool.
When analyzing the Rusted Knight’s capabilities as a martial artist, it is important to note both the substantial degree of development he attained and the significant trade off in his skill configuration.  Due to being thrust back in time, Jaune was forced to spend anywhere from ten to twenty years contending with the dangers of the Ever After, a grinding trial by fire that went a long way towards compensating for his most significant weakness prior to Volume 9, his inexperience and lack of development.  While the reliability and details of Lewis’s recounts of Jaune in The Girl Who Fell Through the World has not been established, even a conservative assessment would place the Rusted Knight as comparable to many of the most experienced and skilled Huntsmen on Remnant.  However, between his damaged weapon and limited resources, Jaune was forced to heavily reconfigure his fighting style to compensate, resulting in a similar but very different combatant compared to what he was beforehand.  Fortunately, the aforementioned decades of isolation gave Jaune plenty of time to refine his new style with his limitations in mind, and his developed skill upon reuniting with Team RWBY was, at bare minimum, comparable to theirs.  Despite the handicaps imposed on him by his weapon, Jaune’s technique remained similar in its core ingredients; a grounded defense-and-counter oriented fighter who leverages physical ability through simple and direct swordplay.  He retained a stalwart grounded posture in his footwork, eschewing acrobatics for sidesteps and evasions.  Where the differences presented itself were in the defense/offense balance.  Rusted Jaune displayed a much stronger offensive component in his style, alternating between shield blocks and sword strikes far more actively.  To compensate for his shorter blade, Jaune adjusted his swordplay to perform swifter and tighter slashes and stabs, getting in close before laying into the target.  The most significant additions to Jaune’s skill set were his expanded use of his weapons, his integration of hand-to-hand combat techniques, and his proficiency as a mounted warrior.  He swapped techniques for his sword and shield, warding parries for the former and shield bashes with the latter, using the weapon set to mor effectively maintain offensive pressure while maintaining defensive coverage.  Though still not a committed unarmed fighter, Jaune was more than willing to throw hands in battle, staggering the Curious Cat with sweeping kicks and headbutts.  His strong bond with Juniper allowed him to coordinate and utilize her for multiple combative purposes, from tackling targets to serving as a cushion to safeguard her master.
Tumblr media
While Jaune’s deteriorating mental health made him an anxious wreck in the grand scheme of things, they did nothing to diminish his capabilities as a tactician and strategist.  He continued to demonstrate his strong aptitude for tactical analysis and coordinating with his allies, adjusting his approach to suit the opponent and exploit circumstantial factors.  When confronting the various Jabberwalkers summoned by Neopolitan, Jaune focused on repelling the creatures and warding off their advance before turning around to counter.  Against the Curious Cat at the Tree, Jaune quickly deduced the hallucinogenic effects of its leaves and ordered Weiss, Blake and Yang to set fire to them, forcibly expelling the Cat from Neo’s body.  In single combat, Jaune applied these same tactics to endure the opponent’s assault before retaliating, seizing the initiative rather than passively responding.  However, where Jaune previously relied on the integration of his Dust gadgets to break the opponent’s advance, he now opted for abrupt alternation between offensive and defensive movements, pressuring the opponent while still maintaining coverage.  He will break off to defend if need be, but he will not stop advancing.  What Vomit Boy achieved through leaning on alternative equipment, the Rusted Knight achieved through tested and developed technique.
However, while Jaune’s new approach was more developed overall, it also came at the expense of the versatility he displayed in his youth.  With his damaged weapon and limited-to-unapplicable alternative tools, Jaune’s style and tactics were ultimately centered around leveraging his core technique for maximum effect.  Jaune’s style may have been flexible, but it was also very singular and direct; what you see is what you get.  Additionally, Jaune’s emotional instability manifested itself most profoundly in a resurgence of his youthful recklessness.  Disturbed by his failure to save Penny during the exodus, Jaune became obsessed with protecting his chosen charges from everything around them, including themselves.  Aside from patronizing the Paper Pleasers, this mentality led to Jaune overexerting himself and biting off more than he could chew, his refusal to stop advancing stemming from a pathological unwillingness to give up.  Where Jaune’s Beacon humbling motivated him to pace himself and fight smart, his Atlas failures compelled him to run himself ragged in a misguided effort to keep fighting.  As seen in the Cat’s Penny and Pyrrha illusions, this failure to take a more measured approach fed into a weakness to more subversive tricks and distractions, ironically making him vulnerable to the very tactics he once employed himself.
RANKING: Tier 3: Standard Mastery
Tumblr media
While Jaune’s failures as the Rusted Knight seem to point to a middling level of effectiveness, his improvements and experience still more than qualify him for a Tier 3 ranking.  He is a gritty, battle-hardened warrior whose style had been developed and honed into a far more complete package than he once employed, and he remains a highly capable tactical thinker when he puts his mind to it.  Jaune’s problem, like many Standard Masters, is that he has fallen into the trap of going through the motions, basically doing the same thing again and again in every battle when dropped in cold.  To be fair to Jaune, this is more the result of a limited arsenal and lack of comparable enemies rather than damaging oversights.  The baseline reliability of his style and approach cannot be denied; he simply hasn’t meshed it with the versatility he used to have.  Regardless, the fact that he came closer to killing the Curious Cat than anyone else tells me that his fabled reputation is very well-earned.
SPECIAL
Tumblr media
And now for the part of this analysis that I’ve been dreading, that being the assessment of the Rusted Knight’s special abilities and powers.  This is the area where Jaune’s development is most unclear simply because, aside from a few uses of his gravity Dust, we never really saw him do anything in Volume 9.  He never explicitly used Aura Amp on screen, and the times he used his Dust could be counted on the fingers of one hand.  This is especially odd given Jaune’s ready use of his abilities prior to falling into the Ever After, especially in conjunction with his martial skills.  However, I do believe that both discrepancies can be reasonably inferred given context.  Firstly, it must be remembered that Jaune’s last recorded attempt to use his Semblance was on Penny Polendina, whose injuries he was utterly incapable of healing.  Given his failure to save Penny was arguably the single strongest contributor to his psychological breakdown in his isolation, it follows that his confidence in his abilities was shattered, and he unconsciously avoided using his powers due to the weight of that failure.  While I don’t believe Jaune’s proficiency with his Semblance truly atrophied, I also don’t believe he developed his powers beyond what he could do in the Atlas saga.  As far as his Dust is concerned, I see his limited use being identical to the limitations of his sword, that being logistical shortages.  There is no evidence that Dust exists in the Ever After, much less the incredibly rare synthetic hard-light variety that powered his shield panels.  With nothing to replenish his stores should his shield get damaged, it’s plausible that Jaune refrained from using his Dust unless he absolutely had to, conserving a non-renewable resource and otherwise relying on physical combat.
However, this isn’t to say that Rusted Knight Jaune has no ethereal talents to speak of.  He did in fact continue to utilize his gravity Dust repulsor in combat, and like his martial skills, his fluidity with it had clearly improved with practice.  Previously, Jaune would simply use the pressure wave from a static position, allowing the shield to do most of the heavy lifting.  Now, Jaune demonstrated a far more active defense, combining the gravity waves with sweeping shield bashes.  Though never outright stated, I believe this technique allowed Jaune to slightly enhance the overall power of the repulsor’s push, getting more bang for his buck.  Additionally, Jaune continued to demonstrate his talent for combining his powers and skills together with one another.  Aside from the basic offensive applications, Jaune also showcased an ability to use his Dust to drive his other weapons, seen when he bounced his sword off the shield to turn it into a projectile against Neo’s clone Jabberwalkers.  These new applications further showcased Jaune compensating for his limited arsenal with greater skill and refinement, sacrificing output in favor of control.
Now, normally I like to stay with concrete information rather than headcanons, but I do believe there may be evidence that Jaune did in fact use his Semblance at specific points in Volume 9, and both of my theoretical examples do speak to him still displaying great skill and power.  Hear me out;
During his early travels with Alyx, Lewis and the Curious Cat, the Cat poisoned Jaune in order to get him off his back and sow distrust between him and the children.  While Jaune’s physical fortitude certainly played a role in his survival, the Curious Cat is not a figure that comes across as leaving a job half-finished.  Given that Aura Amp’s most obvious application was accelerating Aura’s healing properties, it is entirely possible that Jaune’s survival owed itself in part to using his Semblance to help purge the toxin from his body.  Later, during the battle at the Tree, Jaune was confronted with a vision of Alyx after being blasted from the arena.  While this episode was mostly a mental battle forcing Jaune to confront his demons, the flash of light that immediately preceded Jaune breaking out of the vision could have very well been Jaune using Aura Amp to dispel the effects of the smoke.  Assuming I’m right, then this could arguably make Jaune’s use of his Semblance even more potent than before, as dispelling drugs and poisons is easily an incredibly useful talent to have that goes well beyond fixing broken bones.
RANKING: Tier 3: Specialized Combat
Tumblr media
Even if my supposition is 100% on the money, it does not significantly change the Rusted Knight’s standing as an ethereal fighter, given his hypothetical applications are so few, far between, and limited to utility.  That said, Jaune’s use of his gravity Dust more than makes up for it.  His applications are not only just as calculated and powerful as they used to be, they are also far more technically sophisticated and pair up much better with his fighting skills.  His only real limitation, as in other areas, is that he lacks versatility, and his more skillful use of his power still mostly amounts to a directly offensive ability that can only do so much.  Jaune may lack the variety he used to have, but the far greater skill he has with the powers he still has firmly establishes him as a force to be reckoned with.
OVERALL RANKING: TIER 3, ADVANCED HUNTSMAN
Tumblr media
As in his youth, Rusted Knight Jaune Arc’s overall ranking is determined by his martial skills and special abilities, showcasing both his high improvement and the limitations he still suffers from.  In all areas, Jaune is performing on a very high level, but his methodology is centered on direct application rather than the balanced versatility he used to showcase.  In many ways, I consider Jaune’s most direct analogue in this state to be James Ironwood.  Both are aging heavyweights who leverage their strength and fortitude for maximum effect, both are grounded heavy-handed fighters who focus on maintaining a heavy stalwart advance, and both leverage their special abilities and powers as direct supplements to their offensive advance.  They are powerful battlefield operatives who make full use of all the tools in their arsenals, but their approach is based on the direct application of power, not tactical considerations.  By operating as a one-man crusader in the Ever After, Jaune got so good at what he was doing that he simply couldn’t loose, leaving holes in his skill set and tactics unaddressed because they simply never came up.
Jaune’s greatest strength and weakness as the Rusted Knight is that his previously broad skill set has been significantly reduced, forcing him to throw all of his eggs into one basket to compensate.  The result is a tradeoff.  On the one hand, his fighting method is blessed with a substantially greater degree of developed skill by way of his combat experience, and he effectively blends them together into a singular, high-performance technique.  But on the other hand, this also means that he no longer has the versatility he used to have, relying on a singular method rather than balancing out between his options.  He is skilled and powerful enough to capably overcome the vast majority of challengers, but it also means he could get into trouble very quickly if confronted by someone his style is poorly suited to engage.
As with most things, this ties directly into Jaune’s mental state as the Rusted Knight.  Between his traumatic experiences, forced isolation, and fixation on preventing the same failure all over again, Jaune simply fell into the motions and got into the habit of doing the same thing over and over again.  This may have been an okay coping mechanism at first, but there is a stark difference between dedication and obsession.  He never really diversified because, not only did he never really need to, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so since he was convinced that he was doing the only right thing he could.  Fortunately, unlike Ironwood, Jaune’s self-destructive stubbornness was the result of improper healing rather than arrogance, and he was the first to admit that he wasn’t in the right headspace to be the hero he was trying to be.  As with the rest of his life, Jaune’s friends were there to pick him up, setting him on the path to properly heal.  Whatever Jaune’s status as a warrior may be upon his return to Remnant, he will at the very least be on the fast track to achieving a healthier self-actualization, and finally move on from his trauma.  The Rusted Knight may not have been the hero, but Jaune Arc still may be.

I was joking a while back that the actor they have playing KDJ for the orv movie was too handsome for him and a friend who's read orv was like "KDJ is actually secretly attractive!!" And I just felt my soul leave my body right then
SIGHS...
Okay. Buckle in. I'm gonna finally actually address and explain and theorize about this whole...thing.
I'm not gonna cite any exact chapters cause it's like 11:30 and I've got an 8 hour drive in the morning but I'll at least make an approximate reference to where certain things are mentioned. Also, this post is just my personal interpretation for a good bit of it, but it's an interpretation I feel very solid about, so do with that what you will. Moving on to the meat of things:
There is one (1) instance in the web novel that I know of which describes specific features of Kim Dokja (especially ones other people notice). This takes place when members of KimCom are trying to make Kim Dokja presentable to give his speech at the Industrial Complex (after it's been plopped down on Earth). This is when they start really paying attention and focusing on Kim Dokja's appearance since they're putting makeup on him; I still don't think they can interpret his whole face, but they can accurately pick out and retain more features than usual. If I remember correctly they reference him having long eyelashes, smooth skin, and soft hair. These features can be viewed as (stereotypically) attractive.
Certain parts of the fandom have taken this scene and run with it at a very surface level, without realizing (or without acknowledging at the very least) that this scene is not about how Kim Dokja looks. This is, in part, due to not realizing or acknowledging why Kim Dokja's face is "censored" in the first place, and what that censoring actually means. I think it's also possible that some people are assuming the censorship works like a physical phenomena rather than an altered perception.
I'll address that last point first. The censorship of Kim Dokja's features is not something as simple as a physical phenomena. It's not a bar or scribble or mosaic over his face. If that were true it'd be very obvious to anyone looking at him that his face is hidden. But his face is not hidden to people. They can look at him and see a face. If they concentrate on his eyes, they can see where he's looking. They know when he's frowning or grinning. They see a face loud and clear. But what face are they seeing? Because it's not really his, whatever they're seeing.
No one quite agrees on what he really looks like. And if they try and think about what he looks like, they can't recall. Or if they do, it's vague, or different each time. We notice these little details throughout the series. Basically, Kim Dokja's face is cognitively obscured. Something - likely the Fourth Wall, though I can't recall if this is ever stated outright - is interfering with everyone's ability to perceive him properly. This culminated in him feeling off to others; and since they don't even realize this is happening, they surmise that he is "ugly."
Moving on to the other point about what the censorship means: To be blunt, the censorship of his face is an allegory for his disconnect from the "story" (aka: real life, and the real people at his side). The lifting - however slight - of this censorship represents him becoming more and more a part of the "story" (aka: less disconnected from the life he is living and the people at his side). The censorship's existence and lifting can represent other things - like dissociation or depersonalization or, if you want to get really meta, the fact that he is all of our faces at once - but that's how I'd sum up the main premise of it. (The Fourth Wall is a larger part of the dissociation allegory, but that's for another post).
So you see, them noticing his individual features isn't about the features. It's not about the features! It doesn't matter at all which features got listed. Because they could describe any features whatsoever and it would not change the entire point of the scene. Because the point isn't what he looks like. The point is that they can truly and clearly see these features. For the first time. They are seeing parts of him for the first time. Re-read that sentence multiple times, literally and metaphorically. What does it mean to see someone as they are?
This is an extremely significant turning point dressed up as a dress-up scene.
---
P.S. / Additionally, I'm of the opinion that Kim Dokja is not handsome, and he is not ugly. He is not pretty, and he is not ghastly. Not attractive, nor unattractive. Kim Dokja isn't any of these things. More importantly, Kim Dokja can't be any of these things. The entire point of Kim Dokja is that you cannot pick him out of a crowd; he is the crowd. He's a reader. He's the reader. Why does he need to be handsome? Why must he be pretty? Why is him being attractive necessary or relevant? He doesn't, he doesn't, it's not. He is someone deeply deeply loved and irreplaceable to those around him, and someone who cannot even begin to recognize or accept that unless it's through a love letter masquerading as a story he can read. He is the crowd, a reader, the reader. He's you, he's me. He's every single one of us.
#orv#orv analysis#orv meta#orv spoilers#mine#ask#there's also the meta that he is described with these (stereotypically) pretty features as they are about to try and 'sell' him to a crowd#which feels to me like a very pointed way to convey how 'beauty' is commodified. how audiences like 'attractive' characters more#note: made some edits to add in a couple of sentences my brain forgot in the moment so make sure u reblogged those if u do#tag edits for further commentary that isnt strictly relevant to the point i was making:#do i think that this face censorship was executed as well as it could have been? nah.#not that it was like. done Badly. it's followed through to a certain point. its established enough for me to make this post at least.#but i do think it is the one thing in the web novel that SS didn't capitalize on.#like. they still stuck the landing but it was not as picture perfect of an execution as the rest of the metaphorical stuff in orv#also. this (not the face censorship specifically but the 'hes just some guy' point of it all) is one of the big reasons i think that-#-visual adaptions of orv can never quite work. they can do the best that they can with that medium but a lot of nuance is lost-#-simply by virtue of it being a visual medium#i personally think the only way a visual medium could work would be one where they commit to the power move of not showing kdj's face#(until a certain point (of view) that is)#his face is always facing away or out of frame or hidden by someone or something else in the way#commit to the fucking allegory or simply perish

Shrek Kung-Fu Princesses Doll Line
Tumblr media
For #InternationalWomansDay here's a bit of doll history! DreamWorks made a line of dolls in conjecture with Shrek fhe Third of Fiona & her princess friends. However the designs were different from their cinematic counterparts. They didn't even bother to add Doris >:(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I assume this was done to avoid a lawsuit from the mouse. Still, it's kinda hilarious that Dreamworks made their princess line when the entire point of the shrek series is to poke fun at Disney's ultra-corporatism.
Tumblr media
First Fiona. Her doll form is her human form and included a bust of her Ogre form to change heads. She has her green gown which is the iconic item in her wardrobe. Her face does NOT look accurate to her human appearance in the movie!
Tumblr media
Next we have Rapunzel. Her doll keeps the long golden hair but in a different style. In the movie she wore a yellow&red dress while the doll's dress is pink. Odd, given the other two princesses wear pink. Yellow would've stood out more. I got her & Cindy mixed up!
Tumblr media
Third is Cinderella. Like with Rapz her doll form retains the blond and replaces her blue dress with pink. Funny the Disney version had its version of cindy wear a pink dress briefly.
Tumblr media
Fourth is Sleeping Beauty! Her doll has a blue dress while the movie wears green&white. They also have different shades of brown. I guess they didn't want two girls to wear the same color. Also a bit of irony Disney S.B. wore a blue dress, and pink but never green.
Tumblr media
Finally we have *sighs* Snow White. Honestly except for Immigrant Song she was my least favorite she came off as a total witch! But that's a rant for another time. Of the dolls she's the most accurate in terms of physical features. However her dress is dark pink, and her hair is long instead of short. Movie Snow wore red&purple. I think they should've went with that or have her wear entirely purple to fill in for Doris.
Tumblr media
Speaking of, Doris was very much a main part of the group! It was Rapunzel who betrayed the team (for a guy no less!). My guess: to avoid spoiling the film. Given the films Anti Disney/status quo message including a Doris would've helped. To see someone not consisted attractive by society's standards get a glamorous doll of her own would be a huge step for the time! Alas, they had to play by the rules.
One can only imagine if DW revisit the Princesses & try again. Hope they actually make them accurate with their unique qualities including doris (& Lillian too! More older woman dolls please!). With success of The Last Wish, this may be one dream that might come true!

the dendro yaksha.
summary. xiao once had an older sibling.
trigger & content warnings. implied physical abuse, near-death, trauma, et cetera.
tropes, pairings, fic length, & other notes. fluff, angst, hurt/comfort. xiao & dendro yaksha!reader. 0.6k words. they/them pronouns used for reader.
author's thoughts. this concept is one i plan on expanding upon a lot in the future. i'm sure one day i'll write a full-length oneshot of sorts based on the concept, but i think it'll just be brainrots, drabbles, and things of the like for now. xiao, my beloved, he deserves so many good things fr <3
Tumblr media
bosacius was not the only yaksha who disappeared into the chasm 500 years ago.
a very long time ago, xiao once had what he liked to regard as an elder sibling. the two were by no means related by blood, but as as immortals, there was hardly any difference between blood and chosen family.
they always protected him, taking the worst of the wrath of that ancient god who'd kept both of them chained. sometimes they'd fall asleep for months on end just to recuperate from the awful injuries they would sustain. never once did they stop doing defending alatus, though, regardless of how much he had pleaded them to.
he appreciated their efforts in a way that couldn't possibly be described, but he didn't want to be alone.
"i'll always come back, dove, no matter how long i'm asleep for," they assured gently, lovingly, "so don't worry, okay? i'll always come back, alatus."
"promise?" he whispered, wide and teary golden eyes staring up into their own.
they smiled, pinching his cheek affectionately. "promise. just try not to anger him while i'm gone, 'kay? can't have you getting hurt."
when morax first liberated them, they were violent, refusing to let him or guizhong or cloud retainer or streetward rambler or marchosius or anyone touch them or their baby dove. no-one could get close. no, no, they were convinced that the gods were only out to get them and their brother.
(and it was only upon the reassurance of a winged, musically inclined—not to mention much younger—deity from a different nation that they calmed down, but that's a story for another time.)
inevitably, however, those doubts subsided. morax was... surprisingly gentle at times, they noted, and guizhong—goodness, did she even have the capacity to fight? she was brilliant, but not strong.
it was only a matter of time before they swore their loyalty to the lord of geo, signing a contract that would last as long as they lived.
it wasn't until the cataclysm that perhaps their contract would come to an end. after all, the situation they were in was terribly grim.
they wanted to live.
they wanted to live, but they were willing to die in defense of liyue harbor.
being trapped in the depths of the chasm wasn't so unbearable for the first while. bosacius may have lost his mind, but still... they liked to think there was a little glimmer of recognition in his eyes whenever he saw them.
that mortal man trapped with them was awfully good company too, but they feared he would succumb to their's and bosacius' combined karmic debt.
eventually, three became two, and two became one.
they were sure that all that was keeping them sane was studying the odd space they were trapped in (that and the fact that they still retained some sway over the dendro element and therefore could craft cute little flower crowns to kill time). it was fascinating, really. it occupied their mind, distracting them from the darkening of their vision and the malicious whispering in their ears.
repeatedly, though, they almost lost their never-ending battle.
they eventually stopped counting the years that passed. their sense of time was terribly skewed, anyway, so they doubted they'd been counting accurately in the first place.
xiao found the collection of flower crowns littered around a particular spot very, very nostalgic and even comforting. his dendro-aligned sibling always enjoyed making such things for him and the other yaksha.
he dared not get his hopes up, though. anyone could've made the crowns.
it was by following the faint trail of dendro energy (which was largely drowned out by familiar karma) that he found them, barely alive.
yet...
despite being so out of it, when they saw xiao, they smiled so, so sweetly. they soothingly squeezed his hands—they were trying to soothe him, he quickly realized. he must've looked frantic if they were so quick to reassure him rather than reassure themselves that he was really there.
"i would say something witty like, 'i told you i'd always come back,'" they giggled, "but it's you who came back for me this time, isn't it, alatus?"
please consider reblogging, it helps me out quite a lot!

About the Machines of Khaenri'ah and how they Replicated Living Beings of the Outside World (TL;DR)
To date, I still wonder how Khaenri'ah managed to replicate the physical form and mobility of living beings from Teyvat.
Tumblr media
As we know Khaenri'ah didn't have flora nor fauna; so from where they obtained knowledge about other beings outside their nation?
I think there are three hypotheses to this question; I'll go from the one that makes less sense, to the one that makes more sense.
(1) Khaenri'ah had access to Irminsul/ley lines that let them obtain knowledge through it.
We know that Khaenri'ah had no deity (nor they wanted to have one as far as we know), and to date, the only beings we know that have the ability to access Irminsul, are Nahida, and Wanderer.
It seems that the Hexenzirkel was able to make expeditions to Irminsul, probably meaning that they also had access to it.
But there's one exception...the Bough Keeper.
Tumblr media
A human with the title of Bough Keeper, a Khaenri'ahn citizen that has retained self-awareness since the destruction of his nation 500 years ago. Technically, he should have lost his self-awareness to date, right? Yet he didn't, and we might have some idea of why this could be.
When Dainsleif met Halfdan in The Chasm, he didn't understand how his fellow comrade still didn't lose his self-awareness without "it"...
Could that "it" be this?
Tumblr media
One of the items obtained by defeating Abyss Mages, it's basically a fragment of ley lines. If Dainsleif is in possession of one of these, then maybe the people of Khaenri'ah were also able to use these to learn about the outside world without the necessity of a deity.
Leaving this hypothesis behind, let's start with the next one.
(2) Flora & fauna did exist in Khaenri'ah but became extinct by them
This hypothesis follows something of the actual world we live in.
Some animals have become extinct because of our careless and accelerated expansion; and maybe this also happened to Khaenri'ah, as they were considered a proud & arrogant nation by some.
When their flora & fauna became extinct, they started to use the Art of Khemia to replicate what they used to have, and because they used to have it, they already knew what their flora & fauna used to look like.
Maybe they had art descriptions of them or perhaps they even had actual recordings thanks to their advanced technology. To be honest, I think that this hypothesis is not likely to be true, for these reasons: there are some beings that are very unlikely that used to be in Khaenri'ah.
Tumblr media
One example is the Setekh Wenut & the Ruin Serpent which look very alike to it. The Setekh Wenut seems to be from a long time ago because the description of its drop item shows that the Setekh Wenut existed long before time even existed.
Tumblr media
This is the drop item: Pseudo-Stamens.
Tumblr media
Hypostasis also are also kinda likely to not have been in Khaenri'ah as far as we know, yet these people still managed to replicate a machine like them: the Perpetual Mechanical Array.
Tumblr media
Going to the next & last hypothesis...
(3) Khaenri'ah sent people to Teyvat to learn more about the living beings there.
In the book Sun & Moon we were taught that while Khaenri'ah still existed, they sent people to Enkanomiya to get the book.
Tumblr media
It seems that when these people of Khaenri'ah were sent to Enkanomiya, they also bring all kinds of ruin machines with them This could mean that Khaenri'ah had the resources and capacity to travel to other parts of Teyvat.
Maybe non of these hypotheses are accurate, but I really hope they are near to the truth we still yet need to know.

*AUs your canon so hard they become whole new characters*
Tumblr media
I said I was going to make iterators versions of my pjo scugs so here's Hazel's with her scug redesign!
I'm not 100% set on the names yet and honestly am not vibing with DE, but by god is the lore cooking up some soup in my brain (long lore dumps + some design notes below break)
Honestly the Iterator designs are just for fun so not much thought will be put into a storyline, but here it is so far:
Distant Echoes was first of her Local Group to be built. She was created to hold a small population of ancient engineers and scientists as they perfected Iterator design around the region. However, due to the growing load she experienced, her structure was shut down and re-wired with the newer developments of a 3rd Gen model. She's jokingly considered the youngest alongside Seven Flames, Nine Embers (SFNE), Metal of Ten Sung Choirs (MTSC), and First of Minds Fragmented (FoMF) despite retaining memories older than even the Rain itself.
She experiences momentary power failure occasionally, as her structure is still at it core a 1st Gen and therefore less efficient. Her and the others have experienced mild to severe weathering, with damage ranging from temporary memory loss to frequent function disruptions. Still, she tries to keep a positive attitude and utilises her knowledge of Ancient culture to piece together a Solution alongside the Local Group
As for design, I just wanted to make her recognisable as Hazel while keeping with rw's designs. I made her body metallic and her robes like CJ's camp shirt + her overalls. The pearls as a nod to her connection with jewels and metals (on her wires), with more earthy brown for a grounded personality. Not much thinking tbh. Her wires being encased in silver is also a me trying to get locs since I couldn't get her hair shape in there like normal :)
Oh! right, I made her symbol look like Pluto's Y thing mixed with the X karma
Apostate on the other hand is so full of trauma I essentially combined my headcanons for Hunter and Saint's states of being together and smashed them into another traumatised character lmao
Apostate is from a long, long time ago. She was given the Mark and was sent off to help discover the void fluid. Her job was to search through drill holes made by the Ancients and to come back with findings. So, she was bioengineered for higher intelligence than the others of her species at the time. Eventually, she made it to the Void, and her job was finished. The only options left was to either go further or retire. The Ancients chose what they saw as mercy and the Apostate fell against her will.
She fought against the Void and because of this, her more than sufficient Karma wasn't enough for ascension. Instead, she found herself bound in limbo- halfway bound to both life and death. An Echo in physical form.
When she finally made it out, she forsook her old teachings and started anew with a new colony of slugcats. She actively embraces the cardinal sins in fear of being dragged back down There.
Apostate earned herself the name Martyr once her colony found out about her past
again, not much thought behind the designs since I want to keep them game-accurate enough. Her pupils are shaped like the final karma symbol and the edges of her fur look like they're floating away. Typical echo shenanigans tbh. However, when the others reach just the right cycle, they may see shadowy tendrils float from her form

Worldbuilding for Werewolves in the Workplace
I actually typed out a bunch of my worldbuilding for Werewolves in the Workplace, instead of my usual cryptic scribbles on random bits of paper, so I thought I'd pop it into a Tumblr post in case anyone's interested.
Disclaimer: Here be spoilers for Werewolves in the Workplace, and these are my working notes, which means they're not all fully fleshed out explanations, because I knew what I meant :)
Under the cut cause long plus spoilers.
Vampire abilities
If it's the vampire acting on the world or the ability just affects the vampire, it's fair game; if it requires the world to change, no. Much of the stuff in Dracula that marks him as explicitly different (appearance, not healing) and could be used by someone to identify a vampire if it was accurate is propaganda, baby!
Off the table are things like: not reflecting in mirrors, can't enter a home uninvited (because that creates a physical barrier they can't pass), can't cross running water (because either some property in the water would have to change to create a barrier, or all vampires would have to be hydrophobic), afraid of/are stopped/burned by religious symbols (since it doesn't require the vampire to be a believer, there'd need to be some inherent vampire-repelling property in all religious symbols, or all vampires would have to be religiophobic).
Things that ride the line, eg enthralling, are yes with caveats, eg the person has consented, is impaired in some way, or believes they can be influenced without consent. They can phase (turn into vapour) because that's how they escape wherever they were entombed as dead after the change, since a lot of human cultures put their dead in inescapable situations. (That's how Nat escaped her grave, not that she's told anyone that). It's an instinctual ability that only some vampires retain the ability to use consciously.
A stake through the heart doesn't end them, you have to sever the spine, but they still turn to ash/dust.
Werewolf legal status
Werewolves were given legal recognition in the UK and the US in World War One so they could be drafted. It started in the UK, quickly followed by many Commonwealth countries, and then the US. Their legal status in other countries at that point varied; in some Nordic countries, they'd been recognised since the mid-1800s.
In WW1 in the UK, a werewolf tried to enlist in the Army, was denied on the grounds that he was a werewolf, and fought the decision through the courts, but the refusal was upheld. (This was amazing PR for werewolves and garnered a lot of public support: brave and patriotic werewolf wants to fight for his country and is denied etc.) However, the government realised werewolves were a fantastic source of near unkillable bodies they could throw at the Hun and pushed through legislation recognising werewolves as having the same legal status as humans and then promptly drafted the fuck out of them. Similar legislation was quickly introduced in Canada, New Zealand and some other Commonwealth countries, as well as Australia and India, where they was no draft but they were soon being turned away due to the sheer numbers of volunteers. The US quickly followed suit, because the military knows a good source of cannon fodder when it sees one.
Makin' werewolves
Werewolves and humans can interbreed but the offspring will only be a werewolf if the pregnant parent is the werewolf and they shift during the pregnancy. Pregnant werewolves pass the werewolf potential through the placental barrier; shifting while pregnant activates it and the baby shifts, too. If the pregnant parent is human, or the werewolf parent carrying the baby never shifts, the baby will be human. The same is true for werewolf x werewolf parents; the pregnant werewolf still has to shift during pregnancy for the baby to be born a werewolf, but it would be very unusual for them not to.
A human can only be made into a werewolf by being bitten with intent, which activates special salivary glands that produce the werewolf 'infection'—and it must be introduced into the body by a deep bite from a werewolf in wolf form; injecting it or swallowing it has zero impact—or because the werewolf parent that carried them shifted during pregnancy.
Vampire legal status
Vampires were given legal recognition in the early 1980s in the US and UK (with a similar knock-on effect to some other Commonwealth countries) under Regan and Thatcher respectively, because they were both approached by rich vampires who'd been passing as human with the money, power, and attitude to appeal to those fucks. Both Regan and Thatcher were hoping/expecting to get turned but even the most amoral vampire has more class and respect for the world than to inflict those fuckers on eternity.
The UK/US weren't the first. There were already a few countries that gave legal recognition to vampires, primarily in Europe, but even after the US and the UK picked it up, it was much slower to spread than werewolf recognition and a few countries passed laws that did the opposite—explicitly stated that vampires, being dead, had no more standing at law than a corpse and no one committed an offense if they disposed of one.
Random trivia: In order to make ending a vampire a criminal offence criminal codes/laws had to be amended, because homicide (murder, manslaughter et al) requires killing, ie taking a life, and vampires aren't alive. Some extremely conservative US states simply failed to amend their criminal laws, which means someone who ends a vampire there does not commit a criminal offence.
There were also a whole lot of interesting lawsuits after vampires gained legal status around whether life insurance policies had be paid out and whether wills were binding, given the person was still walking around (with insurance policies and succession legislation being amended quick smart).
Lyc-C or Lycanthropic Cancer (warning for discussion of terminal cancer, suicide)
Lyc-C is a cancer that only affects werewolves. It hijacks werewolf healing, which makes it basically impossible to treat. If a werewolf with Lyc-C gets an injury or any kind of damage that activates their healing, that feeds the growth of Lyc-C. This means surgery (or chemo) is rarely a good solution unless it's guaranteed the surgery will get all of it—and surgery on a werewolf is incredibly difficult—because both those things activate werewolf healing, which cause the Lyc-C to grow faster.
Werewolves with Lyc-C in a benign location can live with it for several years if they're extremely careful, don’t get injured, don't do anything to activate their healing, and never shift. If they manage that, Lyc-C will grow very slowly, but it's only a temporary solution. If it appears in a non-benign place - the lymph system, an organ, the brain etc - it will kill them fast.
Once the Lyc-C starts to seriously grow the end is inevitable. The damage it does activates their healing, which causes it to grow faster and spread in a vicious unstoppable cycle until the damage is enough to kill the werewolf. A lot of werewolves choose to suicide (or opt for assisted dying if that's an option where they live) when they know it's going to reach that point.
Vampire blood does end up being the key to a finding a cure. The team using Steve and Dr Erskine's blood have almost cracked it by the time Werewolves in the Workplace starts.
Dr Erskine's symbiosis speculation
Bucky thinks Steve was making things up to throw Shark-eyes off, but Dr Erskine genuinely speculates that vampires started out in a symbiotic relationship with humans. That thousands and thousands of years ago, they were a core part of some human cultures, taking on the role of protector after death. As the world changed and cultures changed, they were no longer wanted or needed, and ended up as predators.

Ciel is FTM-coded.
The way Ciel is written throughout the story does not entirely fit the Victorian societal rules of raising a young gentleman. However, a lot of his inherent character traits align with the narrative of someone who is not born as a cisgender boy - but grows to own his masculinity in a way he can and wants to.
First and foremost, he is entirely dressed by his butler: not only does Sebastian pick his outfits, but he also dresses Ciel from the undergarments on. While both lady's maids and valets assisted their mistresses and masters in dressing (to a different degree), the role of a male servant was more limited. A lady's maid serving a mistress would be more concerned with the lady's appearance whereas a valet would be more of a personal assistant tending to finances, schedules, travel arrangements, and more.
Sebastian seems to take great pride in picking Ciel's garments, making him look aesthetically pleasing, changing his attire, and overly tending to his looks. This surrounds Ciel with a slight air of femininity. While Yana's history is not entirely accurate, we do not see any other noble male character be treated in a comparable fashion. As an FTM-coded character, Ciel represents the struggles of trans men dealing with treatment majorly attested to women while seeking out male presentation.
While not an exact direct part of the story, the promotional material features Ciel in the feminine outfits very often. He typically wears corsets, bustles, suits with long skirt-like bottoms, feminine fetish boots, high heels, lace, and more. Ciel's manga outfits are not proper male wear either. His attires do not, and have never, fit the traditional masculine silhouette used for boys and men alike. We know that Yana is aware of the historical aspect of fashion as she admitted to have read historical books for the manga.
Ciel is not treated this way because he's a child either. We can see plenty of his childhood, his brother's childhood, and his brother's current life at the manor. There's no hint that he was or is treated in the same way that Ciel is. While it can be due to Ciel's brother not having a butler such as Sebastian, it is also safe to assume that Yana would not portray Ciel himself this way within and outside of the manga if this wasn't significant. She undeniably retains his masculine presentation without any hint of it changing - yet adorns him with symbols of femininity.
Victorian model of masculinity also suggested that to be a proper man, or a boy as it applied to public schools too, one is to be physically able and athletic. Ciel is shown to be neither of the two: he is a sick child dealing with a chronic condition. Moreover, he fails to perform athletic exercises in the Circus Arc and requires assistance both at the Noah's Circus and at the Weston College whenever the requirement is to be physically fit.
Tumblr media
Ciel is struggling to maintain being respected in his position of a heir due to his bodily traits: height, weak health, and lack of athletic build. We are shown that he wears heels to seem taller and more masculine as well as a cane - a sign of class and manliness. This desire to fit in within the society where masculinity requires certain physical traits reflect struggles that some trans men handle to this day, which includes inability to feel properly accepted into the society as a man due to a lack of precise physical qualities.
There is a prominent mother-son parallel with Ciel and a father-son one with Ciel's brother. Ciel and Rachel are sickly, allergic, quiet, and attested to "have the same face" by Angelina. Ciel's brother, instead, is very often drawn similar to Vincent in poses, mannerisms, and expressions: he is visibly friendly and often shown smiling despite his actions often not matching his demeanor. He seems to also spend a lot of time with Vincent when still a child. Perhaps Ciel is secondary to his brother in the same way Rachel is secondary to Vincent in a patriarchal Victorian society. This reflects the struggles of being assigned a gender one does not identify as in a society that heavily favors the opposite one.
Tumblr media
Yet, Ciel makes it a point that he is no longer a spare - he is a rightful heir and Earl because he earned it and made himself so. Moreover, the refusal to reveal his name - while might be a plot device - plays well into the idea that his old name is a deadname. Him making a new name for himself, refusing to go back to the old one, and creating himself into an image of masculinity is an example of transition.

something i noticed a while back while rewatching avm was the fact that the entire situation with blue and the witch seems to be a fairly accurate (albeit abridged) depiction of grooming, at least in my opinion (coming from someone who has been groomed for themselves).
putting everything after this under a cut since i'll be talking about topics that might be triggering/sensitive to others, and this is a fairly long post in general. [warnings for discussions of grooming, brief mention of sa, spoilers for the first two episodes of avm s3]
now, before we get into anything, we need to talk about what grooming exactly is. grooming is an abuse tactic where someone uses built trust they've earned from a relationship they've formed with another (which is usually a child/teen, someone younger than them) in order to manipulate/abuse them.
grooming is usually associated with sexual abuse, however, not all grooming is done with sexual intent. in many cases (like mine), it can be emotional, where the victim feels like they're trapped/dependent on their groomer, or it can be a step in getting something that they (the groomer) wants, such as money or power. grooming can be done with the intent of sexually abusing the victim, yes, but there can be many other non-sexual reasons that an abuser grooms their victim as well.
how does this tie in with blue and the witch? well, let's look at what the witch did to blue, alongside common stages in the grooming cycle.
first, we know that the witch pretended to be orange/second in order to gain blue's trust. groomers will pretend to be someone they actually aren't online in order to make potential victims feel more comfortable around them. (this isn't exactly a stage in the grooming cycle, more of a tactic abusers use, but this is still something i wanted to mention.)
groomers target and select their victims based on how easily approachable they are, and any physical/emotional vulnerability. when the witch came to blue (in their second disguise), she was alone, and clearly distraught at the fact that there was no netherwart in the fortress, it being the reason she even came to the nether in the first place.
this brings us to the next stages in the grooming process, which involves gaining one's trust and fulfilling whatever need the victim has. the act of gaining a victim's trust usually takes a decent amount of time, but as the witch took the form of second, someone who had been blue's friend for years, the trust was already there, meaning that blue didn't have any reason to question anything when she saw that it was "orange" that threw the netherwart to her.
after the trust is built, groomers will isolate the victim, making sure that themselves and the victim are in an area where they are completely alone, before the groomer begin abusing the victim, whether it's sexual, or by other means. the witch lured blue into a portal leading to the swamp they lived in, where they revealed their true colors before throwing a splash potion at blue, turning her into a piston.
that's also how the witch maintains control over blue. she was trapped in a white void for what was most likely hours, before she was snapped out of it. this is the final stage of grooming, one that is fairly self-explanatory; the groomer will use any means necessary to retain the control of their victim, whether it be through threats, blackmail, or in blue's case, violence (was attacked with a splash potion).
of course, the grooming process i've talked about here [targeting victim, gaining trust/info, filling a need, isolation, abuse, maintain control] is not the process for all cases of grooming. there may be other, additional steps; groomers may develop relationships with victims' family or friends to gain their trust as well, or progressively get more and more abusive in order to desensitize the victim to it. not all cases of grooming are the same, after all.
as someone who has been groomed in the past to try and keep me in unhealthy relationships (i'm not in contact with those people anymore), i think that the whole situation with blue and the witch is a pretty good example of non-sexual grooming. this was probably unintentional on alan's part, but i still think it's a good example of what non-sexual grooming can look like, with piston-blue harvesting netherwart most likely being an allegory for being forced into some sort of job/potential illegal activity.

under the cut: undersiders as what plant i think they would main/be in pvz garden warfare 1 (+ dressup)
disclaimer i've literally never touched gw2 so if there's a better fit in that game i wouldn't know it.. just gw1 for now..
Decisions are made based more on gameplay than on physical appearance but I tried to take both into account.. however as a sunflower main maybe I'm biased on some account so fellow garden warfare heads feel free to suggest better fits for them
Reading over all these I'm now realizing I kept mixing up what I think they would main vs what plant they would specifically be, which is a little confusing...
TAYLOR
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Peashooter variant feels a very obvious choice for her, since she's pretty much always on the frontlines. Its hyper ability would allow her to jump to higher up places to retain the "watching from afar with bugs" thing
I chose Law Pea more for the justice bit in its stickerbook description (where there is injustice you will find it etc etc) and less for the law bit (though she does have a code of law it's incomprehensible to anyone but herself). It felt more fitting for her because well she does try to work for what she feels is the greater good.
For dressup we're pretty limited here, both because there's not many bug themed accessories and also because I just don't have that many accessories :( I gave her the "heart and arrow + Mom" tattoo, and the visors. Fuuuck now i'm realizing i could have given her actual glasses... Wait no nevermind I'm not sure I have plain glasses. Well anyway those are her glasses.
LISA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She mains boss mode which I feel doesn't require very much explanation
For those unfamiliar: In boss mode you play as Crazy Dave (or Dr. Zomboss), generally out of the heat of the battle but still able to participate with your various abilities. It's mostly a support role, but you can still attack (cherry bomb drops), heal and revive (sunflower + revive drops), and help your team track the locations of the enemy (coconut spotting machine). You aren't invulnerable as the opposing team can shoot down your ship.
For dressup purposes she's the Shadow Flower because of the mask :3 I gave her a razor grin and some purple crystals. Adding a hat felt like too much but maybe I would have gone with the chaffeur hat.
I'm now realizing Shadow Flower would just be a good plant choice for her in general.
Sunflower life bonds are normally reserved for other sunflowers but she can have one with Taylor I think. Well ok not a true life bond because that requires the ability for mutual healing but it's more accurate this way because honestly chasing down someone across the entire map who will easily die if you aren't constantly healing them is just kind of the sunflower experience
BRIAN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, peashooter feels like a given, though unfortunately there's no equivalent ability for his darkness emission...
Plasma Pea because the colors are closest to black out of the peashooters. The Plasma Pea can charge up shots to increase their damage and radius of impact.
I didn't have any skull-based accessories so I just went with what felt cool and what he might use in an actual game of GW1... so basically just the intimidation factor
While we're here though if I was doing zombies he'd 100% be some sort of Foot Soldier. The Zombie Stink Cloud is 1:1 for his darkness ability. I guess since Peashooter and Foot Soldier are kind of parallels in terms of game play this works out well. (Seriously though every Peashooter main I know also mains Foot Soldier. Please I know you are good at video games just stop sniping me from across the map for 10 seconds 😭)
RACHEL

A chomper is a kind of dogy to be honest <---my logic when I was 10
Went back and forth between normal Chomper, Count Chompula, and Fire Chomper. Settled on fire chomper because I was thinking of that scene where she talks about her power burning away heartworm in her dogs, and also because orange. However I think normal Chomper would fit her just as well.
For dressup I was going more for what I envisioned her dogs looking like while reading worm. Additional chompers are there to represent her many doggies. Tentacle is there to be scary and monster esque. Metal brace jaw is there because honestly I think it looks really cool, plus I already had it equipped anyway
AISHA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Originally I was going to go with Chomper because ourple, and I still think it would fit her. However Future Cactus is also ourple. And also I think Future Cactus is so cool
My reasoning was that her stealth would translate well into cacti gameplay since with cacti you mostly need to just find a really good vantage point where no one else can see you, allowing you to snipe people well. But I'm now realizing the Future Cactus is like... a lot more visible bc of its chargeup. Oh well
Aw wait I just realized she matches with her brother cause they both have chargeups.. thats adorable i think
Dressup gives her silly googly eyes ("zombie disguise) and purple markings (they're hard to see but they're there
ALEC
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm now realizing that in terms of gameplay probably one of the peashooters would have fit him better because well he does play shooter games. And peashooters are The main plant for guys who are so good at shooter games. But we have too many peashooters on this team so Sunflower it is
Originally was going with the Alien Flower because I thought its ornateness might fit him. But I don't have Alien Flower and it's more Aisha styled anyway (ourple and silly) so he gets the Power Flower.
Hey wait I used to main this thing too. Yay <---switched to Fire Flower though. But yeah as a sunflower I don't generally go out into the thick of things unless I have like 3 other guys with me, I mostly just stay behind at the garden and heal whoever needs it (garden ops or gardens and graveyards)
Honestly now I'm thinking I mostly chose this one for the appearance rather than gameplay. Actually wait the electricity theme fits with his tazer. Nevermind!!
The panda face tattoo is there because I thought it looked like his mask. Hat and masquerade mask are there because they're fancy.
Sunflower life bond with Aisha future cactus btw.
Anyway that's my list. If and when in the near future I get better accessories I will do more dressup and also maybe deduce what zombies they main

Joseph's abilities (this is completely my own shit no one look at me LMFAO-) will add to this more in the future. Will also appreciate judgement on these because they're not 100% final
~`~
Pre-Far Cry 5 abilities: -> Speaking to the dead is one of the earliest known abilities Joseph has unknowingly used. Though mostly used for the recently departed for short moments in time. This was however 'beaten out' of him shortly after he talked about it.
Far Cry 5 abilities: -> Can see "auras" of people. Though they're only faint shapes, the intensity of them or colour can show what they are to him. A werewolf will have a bigger aura, a demon will have a red one, vampires have a really intense and dark aura.
-> Hearing the Voice means to some extent he can hear ghosts. Kinda fucked up when you think about it.
-> When someone is dealing with a headache or something mental that causes them pain, he can kiss their forehead and give them temporary relief for a few hours.
-> Though he gets his Visions from the Voice, it can't be denied how accurate and how detailed they are. Yes he uses them to further his cause but 90% of the time they're a warning (such as the off-handed line from Jacob saying "you did everything he said you would")
-> He can see when someone is hung up on trauma and he can place his hand on their chest (over their heart) to help them lighten the burden on their heart temporarily. Lasts an hour or two but if continuously done it can potentially help someone permanently.
-> Has to some extent shown he can heal wounds. Although the wounds heal on the person who received them, he takes on the wounds himself.
-> Telekinesis is one barely anyone will notice but has shown itself in the fact things will only move under intense emotion. He's yet to get a handle over this power.
-> Immunity to fall damage is the most bizarre ability of his that most would not expect yet has very little use in practical terms. ~`~ New Dawn abilities (This is thanks to the apple stuff lmfao): -> His "aura" reading gets such an upgrade to the point of actually making out everything in detail. Werewolves forms are completely shown to him, vampires still retain their dark aura however their physical form is shown to him. Demons can't hide behind their human disguise to him.
-> Inhuman strength (picking up his SON for example) which makes for a surprise since he's still thin as all hell.
-> His Visions are much more intense. What could last hours for him might just pass for a few minutes. Happens most during prayers. Uses this to try and avoid what happens to Ethan to little success.
-> Although it hasn't been truly seen yet, it's been rumoured he has been teleporting, appearing in places faster than should be possible. No one has proof of this happening however except the New Edeners spreading such rumours.
-> The healing of wounds no longer makes him take on the wounds from the victim, when he heals a wound it is completely healed with no negatives afterwards.
-> Telekinesis is far better under control to the point he can pull items or people to himself. Although it does become uncontrolled when under intense emotion as before.
-> Telepathy is a new ability for him that has yet to really make an impact, however he has been living in the mountains for a long, long time so bringing him back to civilisation of his people will perhaps prove detrimental more than helpful.
-> Projection is another new ability for him, being able to appear at distant locations while being in another, disabling the need to have Cain or anyone else to act for him. Though it takes a heavy mental toll and he can't keep it active for more than a few minutes straight at a time. He also appears to be able to handle and shoot weapons while projecting as well.
-> His talking to the dead ability resurfaces here, being able to not only talk to them no matter how long deceased they were but also visit where they are and hold a conversation for a while. But he's still getting used to it, and things can still go wrong.

Herb of the Month - Willow
This post will have the medicinal profile and magical correspondences. This is done via years of research and having spent quite a bit of time with it, as it is one of my favorite trees. I've found her to be soothing and relaxing, a real comfort to be around. This may get updated over time to keep it as accurate as possible. Below the image, you will find the information. If you have any information you'd like to add or experiences you've had with it in the comments, please feel free to!
Tumblr media
Plant name: salix alba
Planet: Moon
Element: Water
Gender: Feminine
Healing/medicinal properties:
• What willow is best known for is a chemical called salicylic acid, which is almost identical to aspirin. It is still a popular alternative for naturopaths to prescribe today. As you can imagine, it has pain-relieving properties.
• Reduces inflammation.
• Often prescribed for arthritis and joint pain by licensed professionals. Work with a naturopath to learn what dosage you need as well as how to best take it. Also used for menstrual cramps, if you want to speak with them about using it for that too.
• Known to reduce fevers.
• Helps gum & tonsil inflammation (use decoction).
• Black willow (salix nigra) was used as an aphrodisiac & sexual sedative. It would arose its user.
• Goat willow (salix caprea) was/is used for whooping cough and indigestion. Also used as an antiseptic and disinfectant.
• Sometimes used for weight loss.
Main magical properties:
• Healing: physically & emotionally.
• Love/romance.
• Fertility.
• To conjure spirits.
• Releasing energy.
• Develop psychic abilities and increase intuition.
• Dreamwork.
• Moon magic.
• Curses.
Spell uses:
• Place in a dream sachet to lucid dream or astral project. Often used for dream scrying. Add lavender or skullcap in it (or both) to aid you even further in this!
• Use in any kind of healing ritual. You can also make your own tinctures, salves, or teas to not only harness the physical benefits but bring deep healing. Charge on full moons, by a body of water if possible. If not, use the water element indoors!
• Use branches to make a powerful wand! Preferably fallen ones. Leave an offering and still ask permission to take it, out of respect.
• Carrying the leaves in a sachet attracts love.
• You can sprinkle it around the perimeters of the home and around the rooms to ward off/protect from evil.
• Traditionally, besoms were made from branches that were left on the ground. Use this to make your own! Again, ask permission and leave offerings.
• You can use this in fertility rituals. Placing it under the bed helps, or in a sachet under the pillows when trying to conceive.
• Some use the branches as divining rods. The rods may also be used for binding magic.
• Aids in ancient studies. It likes to teach its user by removing any blockages, especially emotional ones so they can retain more information, from a clearer headspace.
• Use for working through grief. I encourage making a charm for this, as it brings about a comforting energy during these difficult times.
• On another note, willow has a long history of being used in curses, especially revolving around death or causing someone grief.
• From author and herbalist Corrine Boyer: "Willow was thought in some parts to be protected by the devil and if one tied a knot in a young willow tree, and renounced their baptism while sitting under it, the devil would grant them supernatural powers. Polish folklore taught that the willow tree was the Devil's home and refrained from cutting it down for that reason."
Note: Some of these correspondences might not resonate with you, and that is okay. I've found many authors and researchers that I do not connect with their UPG on a certain herb, but I still make note of it (but put, off to the side, that it is their experience). You will experience the same things as you look into information on an herb you are seeking to understand. The best thing to do is work with the plant itself, develop a relationship, and you will find what resonates.
Another note: this is NOT a substitute for modern medicine. If you want to use it medically, see a licensed naturopath and have them work with your doctor(s) so they are all on the same page & can provide the best treatment possible. No herb is the cure for everything. Don't substitute for needed medications.

little goober i made for one of my worldbuilding projects (the one in question being Ghelter Aquatic Desalination Corporation)
Tumblr media
look at the fella, sitting there with his roblox fish lookin face
Tumblr media
You know what I think I'm going to start expositing lore. That wasn't my original intention but I'm gonna do it anyway.
Click the Keep reading button thingy if you'd like to read about marisians and their lives in Ghelter Aquatic.
So I'm sure you've all read the 17 page long in-universe research paper written by Kosi Neuer about marisians that I wrote a little while back...
...but on the off chance that you didn't, here's a basic summary!
Humans are not alone, we have discovered a whole buncha fish people called Homo Natans but more colloquially referred to as marisians.
Marisians are dangerous because they are largely unpredictable (at time of that paper being written) and can only reproduce through infection of humans through bites. Also they might be able to tear people apart with their fangs without infecting but we don't know for sure, it could have been that the flesh was separated from the body at such a speed that there was no time for an infecting agent to enter the body. So it's a maybe on that one for now.
When a human is transformed into a marisian, they take on a number of new qualities. The skin is recolored, along with the eyes and hair. Marisians develop new appendages like fins and fish-like tails. Their pupils also glow. Regarding mental change, most marisians develop a combination of lower intelligence, immaturity, energy, and physical strength (that is often belied by their appearance). More rarely, however, a marisian will experience a significant increase in intelligence that often surpasses their human intelligence (even if that trait is difficult to accurately quantify and measure), maturity, but lower energy and physical strength. The former are called "Swimmers" and the latter are called "Sapients." The ratio of swimmers to sapients is roughly 7 to 1. This may point to a brawns-and-brains mechanic that schools of marisians may use in nature, with sapients being discouraged from doing much physical work and doing the mental work for the group, leading the swimmers who can execute their plans. Swimmers are often docile and compliant with security and researchers while sapients are more hostile and unwilling to conform. Marisians also lose all of their memories upon transformation into a marisian, but do retain a few skills like the ability to speak any languages they knew or a few habits/rituals.
So that's a summary of the relevant part of the paper. There is still more but it isn't exactly relevant to what I want to talk about.
So what does a marisian's average day to day look like? Well, they spend most of their time in their holding tanks. Half of their holding tanks are dry ground while the other half is essentially a really deep pool. There are beds and rooms on the dry section but most choose to sleep in the pool. The entrance to a holding tank is sealed by a huge door thing. idk man i don't do doors lol.
wait i have an image
Tumblr media
this is what those doors look like for the most part. there's a decontamination chamber/checkpoint behind that door that will allow you to enter the holding tank.
Marisians are allowed to mingle with one another and essentially can do whatever they want while not being tested on. Food is delivered and distributed 3 times a day by some poor soul in the Hospitality Department. Employees of the Hospitality Department are going to be the most frequent sight for marisians, other than the Security Department, of course.
Now when I say "poor soul" I don't mean they're like gonna die or anything like that. They're just going to have to get through a really uncomfortable and possibly dangerous environment for like a half hour or so as they try to get everyone's attention and to pass out meals without aggravating anyone. Also they do have an escort of guards so yeah.
The Hospitality Department also handles all of their janitorial work and such. Occasionally, someone in the Engineering Department may need to enter the holding tank to fix something.
Every marisian has a medical check up once a year, held on the "anniversary" of their transformation. That is conducted by the Medical Department and overseen by some grunt from the Ethics Department.
Also anytime I mention departments, assume a few fellas from the Security Department are present. That'll just go without saying.
When being tested on, there will (obviously) be a few fellas from the Research Department and there will usually be some fella from the Ethics Department but not always.
While there is the occasional riot (on average, once every 2 years, actually), most marisians are content with their lives. They don't really seek freedom, on account that most of them are swimmers and just spend all day relaxing in a holding tank with free meals, no rent, no taxes, no jobs or other obligations, free medical care... hey where can I sign up to be one of these guys?
But they do get tested on and sometimes they are extremely unethical. For example, the Psychology Division of the Research Department decided in 2014 that yes, it was very important that we find out what happens to a marisian who basically has the intellectual capacity of a child with extreme claustrophobia and stuff them in what was essentially a small box and deprived them of food and water for 48 hours. Needless to say, that was extremely problematic and the Ethics Department raised a fuss about that one.
That was just like one example of an unethical experiment, they happen startlingly frequently, I just don't feel like making up more right now. Just know that like 1 in uhhhhhhh like every 10 experiments is extremely unethical. Ideally that would be 0. 0 in every 10.
So on account of those, sapients are usually able to get a bunch of swimmers to agree with them that things need to change and they organize a riot. These riots always fail (except the August Riot of 2018. That was a bit... too successful) and usually result in a lot of corpses, blood, and heavy workload for the Recruitment Department.
uh yeah i think that's just about everything i wanted to talk about... can't really find a good way to segue into a conclusion so uh yeah bye.

Note
as someone with adhd i reallyreallyreally appreciated your rivulet post i wholeheartedly agree with everything you said
i did wanna share some of my headcanons for an adhd rivulet though, because i have adhd and i just love the silly fellow so much (maybe some people can grab ideas from this idk. start to recontextualize "adhd rivulet" as something more accurate and in depth)
- they're still hyperactive, but it manifests more as smaller things! swooshing their tail, swaying a bit or bobbing up and down, pacing a bit, or if theyre in shallow water maybe swooshing it around
- they still sometimes get extreme hyperactive periods, but theyre more infrequent. kinda like zoomies! but, theyre a slippery critter, so sometimes they lose control and crash into something
- after these periods of intense hyperactivity, they are tiredd. if its safe, theyll take a nap somewhere. i like to think after this they might go nap by moon :]
- sensory issues! they do NOT like when their skin/fur/whatever is dry. they retain moisture for quite a while, but they still gotta make sure to go for a swim. importantly, they would not be PHYSICALLY harmed if fully dry, but they r e a l l y do not like it. because of their big ol' eyes, i also like to think they have some light sensitivity
- theres also good sensory stuff though! they like smooth, hard, and cool surfaces. pearls, moon's puppet, the rarefraction cell when they had it, all good textures
- when they get too overstimulated, they go as deep as safely possible into the water. it muffles sound, light, and any bad textures are washed away
- gets lost because they have difficulty remembering their goal and the way to get there/back. theyll succeed eventually, buuut itll take a few more cycles
Im sorry this is so long i got extremely excited as i was writing. I could probably go into way more detail but i should REALLY give your poor inbox a break. everything i mentioned is loosely derived from my own experiences with adhd or the experiences of those close to me with adhd. Because of this, i know that my headcanons wont resonate with everyone, but i hope this resonates with people more than just the "haha slugcat go fast therefore adhd"
Sorry again for rambling in your inbox, have a lovely day/night!
this is really cool!! thank you for feeding me a piece of your mind :)
also no worries i struggle to answer asks but i love getting them!

fallen gabe and reconstructed v2's descriptions under the cut for those who arent on artfight and wanna know about these guys
Gabriel:
he/him
After killing the Council and leaving Heaven for the final time, Gabriel was sure he was destined to die, and he was fine with that, feeling as though he had made his peace with his upcoming bout of mortality.
He and the Council were both wrong, however.
Now permanently severed from the Light of god, he effectively sealed his fate as a fallen angel, though what he (and the rest of Heaven) did not know was what exactly that meant.
In Treachery, he would encounter V2, half-dead and unwilling to fight, rather it would go on to strike an initially-begrudging alliance with the angel, bound over a shared goal: to hunt down V1.
While much of the driving force behind this plan was provided by V2, Gabriel still tagged along as it drove the two of them back up through the layers of Hell, and as he did, he would notice his body changing.
Angels, especially fallen ones, are more like strange arthropods than anything else, especially resembling insects. An angel will typically not just outright die when stripped of their light; as an inherently divine entity they still retain a small amount that's enough to keep them alive, however they do end up "falling"--the tight control god once had on their physical form is lost and begins reverting to a more natural and organic state. Gabriel would be no exception to this.
As a proper fallen angel, Gabriel is an even taller (over 8'6") and imposing figure. His halo has become a set of horns and his wings are shattered and split into four long limb-like appendages (think malicious face spider legs but more weaponized). His armor, or rather, carapace is duller and tarnished looking, with the segmentation between plates being more organically divided. He has a pair of sharp, hooked raptorial limbs (like a mantis) connected close to his waist and his legs are completely rearranged into an insectoid form. The front plate of his helmet is largely missing to reveal what at a glance seems to be a void, though also revealing several spider-like eyes around the still completely intact (and untarnished !) cross that once decorated the helmet. The golden spike has split into wasp-like mandibles and large, wing-like lamellate antennae often cover his face in spite of everything else. The [name for whatever the skirt armor plates are] are fused together in the back and extend into a scorpion tail. also his fingers are clawed.
bro is fucked up  !!
optionally, at some point well into the future a few more changes happen over time:
- his bodyplan gets a little less strictly humanoid. playing fast and loose with it
- exposed "skin" gets a layer of fuzzy scales like a moth
- at least one set of the appendages that used to be his wings finally heal into a new set of cicada- or mantis-like wings
- he no longer has the cross from his helmet embedded into his face
- just generally seems way healthier if you know what healthy would look like in an angel ("normal" angels are like god's unethical dog breeds as is)
V2:
it/she Just barely surviving its second fight with V1 out of nothing short of sheer luck or a miracle, V2 was left to drag its utterly broken body out of the scorching heat of Greed in order to try and piece itself together again, physically and mentally. It did not believe it should have survived, only having done so out of chance. It started to see itself as something of a ghost, and there's only one thing your average ghost is after: revenge. Delving deeper into Hell in search of parts and fuel, it, at some point, got ahead of V1 once more and found itself in the frozen wasteland of Treachery, where it would encounter Gabriel. It knew about him, and could accurately guess what they had in common with each other, leading it to try and forge an alliance with him in order to take on V1 one last time, leveraging the fact that both of them had been defeated individually by it previously. It was going to kill its predecessor at any cost. Even if it was taken down with it. Heading back up through Hell, it would form a bond with Gabriel as it tried its best to help him handle his...situation the best it could, going from simply allies to eventually friends (and then even later...uh. great question lmfao). The two would become nearly inseparable by the end of their shared journey. qpp more like the inseparable warrior's bond V2 is fairly short in comparison to Gabriel, only around 5'6" or so, even with the height boost its legs gave it. It's new legs were salvaged from a sentry, and are bird- or dromaeosaurid-like in their anatomy. It's left arm replacement is a tethered saw that can be launched and swung around, built into a swordsmachine-like arm. It's right arm remains intact but it has an extra "skeletal" arm on the same side. All but two of its wing blades are broken off. V2 is also very expressive, having modified itself for the purpose. It has small blade-like structures on the sides of its head that can be moved to convey its emotions, as well as a metal "eyelid" over its optic. Its wings often move and change color in accordance with how it's feeling (red = angry, green = scared, yellow = positive/neutral, blue = negative/neutral) After killing V1, it has a few differences: - its wings are repaired, with all 8 blades intact - it replaces its saw arm with V1's feedbacker (this actually happens before it dies lol) and also reobtains it's knuckleblaster and whiplash - it replaces its skeletal left arm with V1's left arm, giving it anywhere from 3 to 5 arms total Optionally, well into the future: - it builds itself a raptor-like mechanical tail for better balance with its legs. the "feather"-like structures are built to match its wing blades  - if you go REALLY far ahead it eventually develops some synthetic angel wings for itself after studying angel anatomy for a long ass time it is strong enough to pick up gabe. just so you know.

you mentioned and its apparent that touya-nii is borderline sociopath so does he ever like 'miss' anyone? what does he miss? for example if hes at work does he miss reader romantically or is it missing her because he likes to have her right there with him always
eeee i love this question!!!!
so he definitely does ‘miss’ people—or, more accurately, what they can do for him—in some twisted sense of the word. reader has become a comfort object of sorts for him, especially since she’s so constant, consistent, and predictable (aka not uncertain) and he loves that he has this continual power over her. he still retains this authority and control when he’s away on ‘business’, of course, but to a lesser extent. he can video call her etc to make sure she’s doing xyz tasks, and he can check the cameras and receive reports from natsuo when he physically checks in on her, but there’s still a lot she can lie about, too, and that instils anxiety in him. as such, he definitely misses the comfort and familiarity that comes along with having her within arms reach or being in the same vicinity as her.
he also misses her doting on him—gazing at him with those adoring eyes and giggling so preciously at what he says and cutely performing all of those mundane, domestic tasks for him, like making him food or doing his laundry; all those sweet, stupid little things she does as she plays Little Sister Housewife. he misses her intimacy, too: her touch and her tongue on his neck or his cock, misses her distinct kisses that start off shy but always, without a doubt and inevitably so, grow into something eager and urgent, into something voracious and fervent; misses her squeals and sighs of his name + his honorific, tangling on her tongue or in her throat as he pounds her into oblivion.
in other words, he misses her attention, both physically and otherwise. attention + power is mostly what he misses with natsuo, too—while touya is fairly high up in his criminal organization, he isn’t the Boss boss, and he still has to answer to someone. he misses being at the very tiptop, the one with complete control, the one who makes all the decisions and always has the final say, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. he misses the way natsuo looks at him like he’s so cool, with stars in his eyes and awe in his throat, misses that pure adoration pouring from his little brother’s gaze that always swathes him in such warmth <3
