Hey Whipple! I love your Cars headcanons and the insight you put into them!
I have a Cars question! Feel free to dive deep if you want!
What do you think Lightning and Sally love most about each other? What are the qualities and traits that strengthen their bond?
Thank you! This blog has actually written a lot about this question, so I'll link a few posts that I think offer a strong constellation of all the ways and reasons Lightning and Sally love each other:
Lightning and Sally are each other’s person with whom they will have conversations about things no one else knows is in them. Sometimes Lightning and Sally go out on a bluff and talk for hours on end and when the wind blows the right way the town can hear them and it’s a conversation so referential and full of implication and shared shorthand resonances and so interested in a bunch of things literally only Lightning and Sally find worth talking about that no one every quite knows what all they’re going on about or why. That’s what they give to each other that no one else can—what they are like to each other as partners.
Their love for each other is woven with many more threads than just themselves. The Lightning Sally fell in love with was the Lightning who’d already fallen in love with the town and the whole of the Valley, after all. They offer a picture of a serious romantic relationship that is about the many ways and many venues in which those big feelings are expressed, the communal actions that demonstrate commitment rather than flee from it, and the ways that love between two is never just about two.
They love each other as much as the mountains are tall and the valleys are deep.
They love that they don't have to always take each other seriously.
They love that a fight won't end it all:
It’s their first real fight. Any time they’ve come close before, some neurotic part of Lightning–the part that believes that if they fight they will lose what they have and they will never get it back again; they will never be in love again; he will never have a home, ever ever again–kicks into overdrive, and he backs way down.
Frankly, it’s probably one of his least attractive qualities, since Sally’s always been a sucker for a good debate. But she knows he’s trying; trying not to be who he was, trying to catch up with the rest of the world when it comes to things that aren’t corners and racetracks. Generally, she’s happy to be patient.
But the fact is, Lightning’s bad at dealing. He’s pulling, at best, a C-average when it comes to life skills. He’s not ready for death. [Keep reading... ]
They love that if there's going to be a dangerous flash flood, there's no one they'd rather nearly die with.

THE IDES OF MARCH. March 15, 44 BC. Julius Caesar is assassinated. March 15, 1937. H. P. Lovecraft dies. March 28, 1904. Whipple Van Buren Phillips - Lovecraft's grandfather, and the most important male figure in his life, dies. March 22 - April 2, 1925, Great Cthulhu rises and then sinks once more with his cosmic city into the Pacific Ocean. March 16, 1883, Sonia Haft Green Lovecraft Davis is born. March 3, 1924 Lovecraft and Sonia Green were married in NYC. The joining would fail miserably and their unofficial divorce would prove a massive embarrassment for HPL. March 14, 1869, Algernon Blackwood was born. Blackwood's tale, THE WILLOWS, would be called by Lovecraft, "The greatest supernatural story ever written in the English Language. March 1931, Lovecraft would finish writing, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, perhaps the most ambitious story he ever created. 'Mts' would be serialized in the Feb. Mar. April, issues of ASTOUNDING STORIES. Lovecraft's story as it appeared there was so abridged and filled with typos that he did not consider it legitimately published. March 19, 1902. Florence Carol Weld - Lovecraft's step daughter with Sonia Greene is born. Sonia's grown daughter from a previous marriage (her birth-father had died) met Lovecraft briefly. Apparently neither cared for the other. March 26, 2019, Wilum 'Hop Frog' Pugmire, long time Lovecraft fan, author and beloved personality within the fantasy/ horror underground dies. The Ides of March. I include these dates and personalities merely as examples of coincidence. In his letters to August Derleth, Lovecraft lectured the younger writer on the mistake of giving coincidence any sort of significance other than pure chance. (Exhibit 282)

I really enjoyed Land of Falling Sun. I don't think I've ever read anything like it and it felt really evocative of rural Nevada, Utah and Arizona in a really magical way.
Have some pictures I took looking east over towards Lake Havasu from the Whipple mountains:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I based a lot of my descriptions off my time in rural california, nevada, arizona, colorado, and wyoming so I'm glad it comes through and feels familiar!
HHHHHH that's gorgeous oh my god

The saguaro (/səˈwɑːroʊ/, Spanish pronunciation: [saˈɣwaɾo]) (Carnegiea gigantea) is a tree-like cactus species in the monotypic genus Carnegiea that can grow to be over 12 meters (40 feet) tall. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the Mexican state of Sonora, and the Whipple Mountains and Imperial County areas of California. The saguaro blossom is the state wildflower of Arizona. Its scientific name is given in honor of Andrew Carnegie. In 1994, Saguaro National Park, near Tucson, Arizona, was designated to help protect this species and its habitat.
Saguaros have a relatively long lifespan, often exceeding 150 years. They may grow their first side arm around 75–100 years of age, but some never grow any arms. Arms are developed to increase the plant's reproductive capacity, as more apices lead to more flowers and fruit. A saguaro can absorb and store considerable amounts of rainwater, visibly expanding in the process, while slowly using the stored water as needed. This characteristic enables the saguaro to survive during periods of drought. It is a keystone species, and provides food and habitat to a large number of species.
Saguaros have been a source of food and shelter for humans for thousands of years. Their sweet red fleshed fruits are turned into syrup by native peoples, such as the Tohono Oʼodham and Pima. Their ribs are used as building materials in the wood-poor deserts. The saguaro cactus is a common image in Mexican culture and American Southwest films.

FYI, when I eventually start posting about Brenda Hernandez interacting with the other adults in the movie verse, I am NOT pairing her romantically with Wade Whipple.
They do buddy up because, if I'm crossing over with/flat out stealing @stillafanofsonic 's Whipple verse, they're both raising two alien kids by themselves so they both get the struggles the other has. But they have more of a big brother/little sister dynamic.
Also Wade gets the personal honor of arresting Brenda for trespassing into the Mean Bean Cafe (she wants to know what else Robotnik and Stone had hidden in there, refuses to accept "let the police handle it") at least once.
AND Brenda's much more accustomed to big city life, so she calls Wade for pretty much EVERYTHING small town in the mountains related.

Yesterday we took a day trip with Dhara and Cindy up Mount Hopkins Road in the Santa Rita Mountains. We drove as far as we could until we hit the gate at The Smithsonian Institution Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory. It was a long haul going up on a rugged dirt road that had plenty of switchbacks, however once at the top, the views were incredible. It's a rather remote area as we only saw one other car on the entire journey up and back down.

Backpacking through Wilderness Beauty: Exploring Dixie National Forest in Utah
Tumblr media
Utah's Dixie National Forest is a hidden gem that beckons backpackers with its rugged beauty, diverse landscapes, and a profound sense of solitude. Covering more than 2 million acres, it spans a vast region of southern Utah, offering a remarkable array of trails and wilderness experiences. In this essay, we'll delve into the world of backpacking in Dixie National Forest, exploring its unique features, diverse ecosystems, and the rewards it holds for adventurous hikers.
The Variety of Landscapes Dixie National Forest is renowned for its stunning diversity of landscapes, encompassing everything from high alpine meadows to deep red rock canyons. One of the key attractions for backpackers is the forest's elevation range, which spans from 2,800 feet in the lower desert regions to over 11,000 feet at the highest peaks. This wide range offers hikers the opportunity to experience multiple ecosystems in a single backpacking trip.
The Pine Valley Mountains One of the most captivating backpacking destinations within Dixie National Forest is the Pine Valley Mountains. These ancient, sky-piercing peaks offer a challenging and rewarding experience. The Whipple Trail and the Bear Trap Canyon Trail are two popular routes that lead hikers through lush forests of aspen and pine, pristine alpine lakes, and panoramic vistas that seem to stretch endlessly.
The Aquarius Plateau The Aquarius Plateau, often called the "Roof of Utah," is another backpacker's paradise within Dixie National Forest. This high-elevation region boasts a network of trails that wind through lush meadows, dense forests, and pristine lakes. The Great Western Trail, which crosses the plateau, provides opportunities for extended backpacking journeys, revealing breathtaking scenery and the chance to spot diverse wildlife.
The Escalante District Dixie National Forest's Escalante District is renowned for its slot canyons, unique rock formations, and a sense of true wilderness. Backpackers can explore trails like the Lower Calf Creek Falls Trail, which meanders through a stunning desert canyon to a pristine, 126-foot waterfall, providing an oasis in the arid landscape. The district also offers access to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, adding to the allure of backpacking in this region.
The Dark Skies Beyond its terrestrial beauty, Dixie National Forest is known for its exceptionally dark skies. Backpackers can experience a celestial wonderland by camping under the stars. The lack of light pollution allows for unparalleled stargazing opportunities, making this forest an ideal destination for astrophotography and simply marveling at the wonders of the night sky.
Solitude and Reflection One of the most remarkable aspects of backpacking in Dixie National Forest is the solitude it offers. This vast wilderness provides a sense of isolation and tranquility that is increasingly rare in today's world. Backpackers can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, find solitude in nature, and reflect on the profound beauty of the landscape. Backpacking in Dixie National Forest is a journey into the heart of Utah's wilderness. From the towering Pine Valley Mountains to the remote canyons of the Escalante District, the forest offers an unparalleled range of landscapes and experiences for backpackers. Whether you seek adventure on challenging alpine trails, the tranquility of pristine lakes, or the wonder of dark, starry nights, Dixie National Forest invites you to explore, connect with nature, and discover the untamed beauty of this hidden gem in the American West. As you hike through its diverse ecosystems and gaze upon its breathtaking vistas, you'll undoubtedly find that Dixie National Forest is a backpacker's dream come true.

Pics: HPL' s influence is inescapable.
1. Say, are those radioactive drums in the background? Or, brain carriers?!!
2. Sigh. That's not the non-Euclidean architecture described in the story! It's too human/squared & needs more rounded edges, domes, etc...
3. Swami Alhazred knows all...
4. Say, is that the Monolith from "2001: A Space Odyssey"?
5. There's a lot of 'noise' as to which, of Lovecraft's works, is the best. Some readers like "The Call of Cthulhu", "The Mountains of Madness", etc.
But, for my money, "The Shadow Out of Time" is HPL's best use of his basic plot tropes.
Change My Mind.
(Heh.)
H.P. Lovecraft: Overview.
1904 was a disastrous year for Howard. Before Whipple (his grandad) died, he was set to become another rich dilettante.
The sudden loss of his grandad's riches, left Lovecraft (& the rest of his family) almost destitute.
Howard even considered committing suicide. Luckily, for readers, he didn't choose this most final path.
But, it wouldn't be the last time that Lovecraft felt this way...
HPL would never get over the loss of Whipple's mansion - along with his status & childhood happiness.
Lovecraft's yearning for his former life led to his lugging certain items (fine linen, china pieces, books, etc) around with him, wherever he moved.
It would also lead to Howard's later affectation of being a "gentleman."
Now forced to live in a shared duplex, HPL would 1st come under Sarah's verbal abuse...
Worse, Lovecraft had to get ready to go to high school - after a long, home schooled period.
At the Hope Street High School, Howard clashed with his teachers, was bored by most of their lessons & was tagged with the nickname of "Lovey."
The next year (1905), was no better.
July found Lovecraft working on "De Triumpho Naturae" & complaining of some "nervous condition."
Not surprisingly, Sarah kept Howard home for the Fall school session. He ended up missing that whole year's school work!
This time, however, Sarah couldn't pay for private tutoring...
1906, however, would be a better year - for HPL's blossoming writing career.
Lovecraft started out his 'professional career' by writing letters of comment to newspaper editors.
In May, Howard sent his 1st letter (on some astronomical matter) to the Providence Sunday Journal.
A month later, HPL attacked astrology in another letter to the editor.
In July, Lovecraft received a used Remington typewriter from his mom, which he used for the rest of his life...
This same month, Howard started on his 1st true job. He began a weekly column (on astronomy) for the Pawtucket Valley Gleaner.
Obviously, this wasn't enough work for HPL. As he soon started writing another astronomy column. This time, for the Providence Tribune.
This 2nd job would last him 2 years.
(Til the horrors of 1908...)
Better yet, this was a job which allowed Lovecraft to write his own, larger articles.
The 1st such article being, "Could the Moon be Reached by Man?", which was printed that very August.
When HPL reentered high school, his new job - as a journalist - actually helped him out with his status.
Lovecraft had 'earned' a new moniker. Now, the other students called him "Professor."
At this time, HPL was motivated by the wish to graduate from Brown University to work as an astronomer!
So, he persevered...
During his 1st month back in school, Lovecraft finished another article, "Is Mars Inhabited?"
(Strangely enough, our own biologists are still working on this very subject.)
Weird Bit: Howard's English teacher thought that HPL had plagiarized a newspaper article - &, Lovecraft agreed with her!!
Then, of course, Howard showed her his byline - proving that he had written the story himself!
By October, HPL had finished another astronomy article "Are There (Any More) Undiscovered Planets?"
This was all atop of Lovecraft's school work & the weekly newspaper column.
But, Howard had to struggle thru another 2 years of schooling.
As a student, Howard focused on 3 subjects - 1 a repeat of algebra. The other 2 were chemistry & physics.
But, these classes all featured the kinds of math that HPL had a hard time understanding!
He had, it seemed, reached the limits of his skills as a student...

The Fantastic Family Whipple by Matthew Ward
Tumblr media
Arthur Whipple was a disappointment from the moment he was born. Take this exchange between Arthur’s father and the doctor for example:
Pg. 2 from “Congratulations, Mr. Whipple.” to “This is just a disaster.”
Only the Whipple Family would hope for a baby to have more than 10 fingers and 10 toes. The Fantastic Family Whipple...12 children and 2 adults...who currently hold the World Record for the Most World Records Broken by a Single Family Unit. Every single one of the Whipples holds at least one world record from Longest Continuous Time Playing the Accordion to the Youngest Person to Climb the 3rd Highest Mountain in the World. They even own the World’s Tallest Dog, and currently hold the record for Highest Number of Coincidental Birth Dates. Everyone is showered in world record numbers, except for Arthur, whose birthday is one day before the rest of his family and who has never broken a world record. But when a family curse, a mysterious crime involving a giant birthday cake, and a rival family threaten to unseat the Whipples from their world record throne, Arthur is the only one who can save them, and the one only who might die trying.

All across Whipple Mountains Wilderness in California, life has adapted to thrive. From the spiky saguaro to delicate wildflowers, plants accent and soften the rocky ground. Bighorn sheep, mule deer, wild burros, coyote, black-tailed jackrabbits, ground squirrels, kangaroo rats, quail, roadrunners, owls, desert tortoises, and several species of rattlesnakes and lizards live here. And above, soaring through the dramatic desert sky, eagles, hawks and falcons look down on their next meals. Photo by Bureau of Land Management.

The next train car: the ice cream cone! This was very clearly supposed to be modeled after an ice cream cone, but I wanted to expand the theme a little bit, instead of just making this a different colored cone. So I repainted the waffle cone to look like a wooden lattice, and the ice cream to a snowy mountain! I really like how the blue micro glitter adds nice icy shading under the thicker holo-type flakes! I originally planned to use a Whipple type fake icing, but ultimately I feared it might be too much for the already busy paint job. I’m really happy with how it turned out - did you catch how I hid the screw holes? 😉 #mylittlepony #mlp #mylittleponyg4 #mylittleponyfriendshipismagic #mlpfim #mylittleponycustom #mylittleponytrain #train #mylittleponycollector #ponygurucustom #winterycollab2022 #customtoy #train #pastel #sweets #candy https://www.instagram.com/p/CZs6hTMrQt_/?utm_medium=tumblr
