My nose has not recovered from covid yet, but enjoy a review.

there are some delicious notes of Terry's Chocolate Orange and salted caramel under a layer of meaty smoke on the nose.

The palate is all rich smoke, spice, and some spam-ish note.

The finish is rich oily smoke and salt, tinged with the faint memory of a Romeo y Julietta maduro cigar.

Buy this if you can.

Ooof what a week. Busy with work, but I'm on vacation again next week, woo! Plenty of time to write, and catch up on my reading list and I can't wait. 🤗

Working, and squeezing in some reading and writing. The weather hasn't been too great here for hiking the last two weeks, so I'm itching to get out this week and go for a hike if I can, stretch the ol' legs.

Ah Shane, another man surely claimed by the number one cause of death in Ireland: Irishness. Sometimes it felt like you had to take your finger and fish around in his horrible mouth for all the poetry you’d been told was in there, but if you kept at it you’d always pull out some slurred gem eventually. Like a lot of men of my genre, to me the Pogues personified down-but-not-out romance, the sort of music for cavorting and resisting but also for sliding your heavy boots along some dusted wood floor, with your hands around a woman’s waist and your exhausted nose in her good-smelling hair. They made masculine music, certainly, but in that manner that admits tears and tenderness among men, the way enough beer can blur the stiff boundary between straight dudes and whiskey can burn right through it by the end of a night. And they made smart music too, cognizant of history, ever on the side of the common person, but with a maniac zest for bloody myths and black-humoured political sloganeering.

MacGowan loved doomed poets like Federico Garcia Lorca and Brendan Behan, and it seemed that in his understanding there was no separating the doom from the poetry. Certainly he was avid in his commitment to both. In his lyrics and in his stage presence, he presented the figure of a tattered, drunken tramp, whose low state gives him vision, reckless freedom, and the right to broad sentimentality. It’s a pose that’s existed about as long as literature itself has, and there’s plenty of Irish and English folk songs that lean into the trope—what MacGowan, via his punk roots, brings to the table is that he sounds like that character when he sings. It’s moving when a ruinous drunk opens their gob and a high pure “Danny Boy” voice emerges. But with MacGowan, you feel like you’re right there in the bar or the prison cell or the ghostly pirate ship where the action is happening.

Of course, the Pogues were always more than just Shane, and it’s not unlikely he’d be a very obscure figure today if he hadn’t joined forces with such a formidable crew of instrumentalists. Though I’m partial to the MacGowan-dominated Rum Sodomy & the Lash, their most successful record, If I Should Fall from Grace with God, is the moment the band and their brilliant frontman achieved equilibrium. Many of the album’s finest songs are co-writes between MacGowan and banjo player Jem Finer, while new additions (and actual Irishmen) Terry Woods and Philip Chevron (himself passed away in 2013) each contribute moving originals. The band is every bit as put-together as Shane is not, but the record finds them as always shifting gracefully between hellraising punk, rare old dewy folk, and honest-to-God Christmas music without once seeming out of their element. On the better than respectable (though less than classic) albums that followed, they would effectively take up the slack left by their decreasingly functional singer. Even when Shane was often little more than a reeking stage prop, they remained a force in concert.

I own the first three Pogues records (and the Poguetry in Motion EP), and prior to today I hadn’t decided which I would write about. But when I heard the news, I knew immediately it would be Grace’s “The Broad Majestic Shannon” that would be the song to make me weep; and that decided it. Lesser known than the similarly swinging “Fairytale of New York,” but no less special to my heart, it tells in plain speech of the pain and relief in time’s passing. As MacGowan told it, “Shannon” is “a song about an Irishman returning to his hometown in County Tipperary after many years of living in London, and finding that everything about the place he grew up in has changed or disappeared.” He remembers a last drink with friends and a lover, a pensive moment sat at a crossroads where he took the place in a final time before pushing off. Sometime later, he returns to a wall where that crossroads once stood and stands by it a while, pushing around some old rubbish with his foot before shaking his head wryly at himself for being so sentimental about it. Threading those two moments in time there’s the chorus I quoted at the top of this piece, this rich, tender, accepting thing. On the first pass through, it could be the speaker comforting his loved ones on the eve of his departure; on the second, it seems the memory of his own words gently chides and comforts him. “The Broad Majestic Shannon” makes the iron, inescapable fact that all people and things must pass away sound like a blessing, and that coming to accept this fact is the requirement that makes truly living possible. Poets tend to be denied the benefits of their own insights, but they say even in his ruin Shane was content with his lot. He loved and was loved. And now he’s gone where there are no tears or cops or dentists, and we have our time together before we go too.

Chris Stapleton - Higher

So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would like to talk about the latest album from Country Music Superstar Chris Stapleton. The new album is titled "Higher" and was released on Friday November 10th, 2023. But before we talk about 14 track album. We will talk a little about Chris Stapleton's career next.

Chris Stapleton has released such hits like "Tennessee whiskey", "You should probably leave", & "Starting over". Other songs include "Broken halos", "Joy of my life", & "Millionaire". Chris has scored 3 number ones on my weekly list MSR (Midnight Star Report). My weekly list combines both CMT (Country Music Television), the Billboard Country Music Airplay Charts, & even myself. The list used to include GAC (Great American Country) until the list officially retired at the end of 2018. But let's jump back into the new project next.

Chris co-wrote all 14 tracks, and even had help from Miranda Lambert. The lead single from the CD is "White horse", and the title track is "Higher". Songs you should also check out are "What am I gonna do", "Trust", & "It takes a woman". Other songs you may like are "Think I'm in love with you", "Crosswind", & "The mountains of my mind". The stand out tracks in my mind are "The bottom", "The day I die", & "Weight of your world". Here is the rest of the track list now.

I haven't been active much here, so here are some quick little whiskey reviews

Jack Daniels Tennessee Rye Whiskey

Do I like it? Yeah, its nothing super special but its pretty solid if not terribly reminiscent of typical rye whiskies. Its very sweet and heavy on Banananana nut bread and maple syrup notes.

Do I think its a good value? Yeah, for 24 bucks its pretty solid.

Do I recommend it? Sure, it is not representative of the typical American Rye style, but it is an enjoyable dram.

Catoctin Creek Barrel Select Laphroaig Cask Finished

Do I like it? Hell yeah! This stuff is loaded with fantastic cheesey funk, smoke, rye spice, tannins, and char.

Do I think it's a good value? Yes. But it isn't widely available.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely. If you see this buy it.

Nelson's Greenbrier Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey

Do I like it? Well enough. I think it is a definite step up from the standard Jack Daniels (which occupies the same market segment) and it is a very good example of the style.

Do I think it is a good value? Yeah, its a step up in quality from Jack and a step up in price, but well worth it.

Do I recommend it? Yes, if you are looking for good Tennessee whiskey this should be on your list

Ironclad Small Batch Bourbon

Do I like it? Meh. I think there is potential here, but its seems a little bit too heavy on off notes. Salt, nuttyness, caramel, and spice are the good notes, but it is sharp, thin, chemically, and damp cardboard put a damper on it.

Do I think its a good value? No. For 40 bucks per 375 its just too much. Even if it delivered on its promise I would think it was a little too much.

Do I recommend it? Not really, I want to like it but can't say I think its worth it for anyone else.

Ragged Branch Signature Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Do I like it? Yes, this is a very good bourbon, complex, layered, and nuanced. Featuring molasses/brown sugar, slight nuttyness, cinnamon, vanilla, and corn shinyness.

Do I think it's a good value? Yes. For forty bucks it can go toe to toe with a lot of similarly priced offerings from the big guys.

Do I recommend it? Yes, this is a great example of what craft is capable of, proof that its worth the investment.

Frankie Morales NSFW Alphabet - @ghostofaboy I felt like I was reading a true to life version of Frankie right off the page when reading this, it was so immersive. Ghostie has this incredible knack of making me feel like I can reach out and physically touch Frankie, and this was no different. Genius. 👏🏻

This Charming Man - @ramblers-lets-get-ramblin Another Frankie highlight this week in the form of dark!Frankie. And I urge you to read this. This had me feeling like I did when I watched Dexter all those years ago; you root for the bad guy, even though you know you shouldn't - you can't help it because you just love him so much! This was brilliant and so emotive and descriptive. Another amazing homerun from lovely Angela! 🤘🏻

Las Mañanas - @kiwisbell I discovered this gem of a story this week and am hooked! I've devoured chapter 1 and am setting time aside this coming week to catch up on the rest, and you totally should too. Javier Peña in this is just everything you want; heroic, charmingly smooth with a pinch of arrogance, and the type of man you absolutely want coming into your coffee shop. 😍

Two Left Feet - @linzels-blog I adore this story. My mouth still aches from smiling so much as I read it. I was pulled right into Whiskey's world and Southern charm. Such a great fic that left me right in the action. I was dancing, I was drooling. I highly recommend this. 🤠

Send In The Clown - @covetyou I sat on this fic in my tbr for waaaay too long, let me tell you. I'm actually pissed at myself. This is nothing short of genius and please, if you're not into clowns that's cool, but I'd insist you give it a shot anyway because you'll be pleasantly surprised at how this is done. Dieter in this is just everything. I am in utter awe! Just a marvelous read that I will be absolutely indulging in again and again. 🤡

Headshots Chapter 5 - @secretelephanttattoo I'm devastated that this Marcus Pike series has run it's wonderful course, but all good things must come to an end, right? And this is sooooo fucking good. My #1 post of 2022

Chaos Activated

📝 A/N: No prompt just word dump of hilarious chaos the Dagger Squad causes… Mainly the Chaotic Trio: Maverick, Rooster, and Whiskey (Reader’s Call Sign) Oh and Reader is Slider’s daughter…! Fic based on the comments of this post.

It was a miracle that Maverick and Rooster survived the mission despite the near death experiences. The both of them had to thank Hangman and you for saving them and getting them back to the ship.

What was more of a miracle was that Vice Admiral Cyclone did minimal shouting at Rooster for breaking orders and going after Maverick.

Now they were being taken to the infirmary to check and treat for any injuries. You don’t know why the doctors and nurses even bothered trying to separate the two.

Despite their rocky past, the two deeply cared about the other. You knew Uncle Mav did what he thought would be best for Rooster by pulling his papers. It was something you and your father never agreed with and expressed it to him.

Rooster was like a cousin to you and you knew he was just as stubborn as Mav. You couldn’t help but love the two to death. (Sometimes quite literally).

The weeks passed and you all found yourselves back at The Hard Deck. It didn’t matter how much you tried to behave, you knew, one way or another, Mav and Rooster would end up dragging you into their schemes.

“No! No! No way am I going to use my daddy’s name to get Cyclone to give us another three free days to play dogfight football,” you say.

“C’mon kid. You’re a Kerner. You’re Slider’s sunshine. He’ll move earth and planets to make the Navy listen to you,” Mav says.

“When did you turn into a poet?” You ask sarcastically.

Bradley throws an arm around your shoulder. “Princess. Whiskey… We all know Cyclone is sweet on you. Live up to your name Whiskey. Use those smooth words and seduce him.”

You can’t help but start laughing. “You do know I don’t have to seduce my own boyfriend?”

Penny comes over and refills your drinks. “I can already sense the chaos activating with you three.”

“I’m heading out to the beach to get away from these two troublemakers,” you say taking your drink with you.

Penny winks at them and at that moment the rest of the squad came out from hiding. “So is the plan set?”

Phoenix nods. “I’ll go keep her distracted for a moment but then Mav and Rooster come back into the mix while Yale and Fritz get Cyclone here.”

Fanboy starts setting up the camera to record the planned proposal.

But Penny knew. She already knew that whenever the three of you got together, nothing would ever go according to plan. She started closing out tabs and closing the bar early.

All of a sudden the aviators hear shouting and see Mav and Rooster running along the beach and you running after them yelling.

A group of college aged guys were following the three of you. It was then they realized that Mav and Rooster used you as bait to steal the guys’ football to start their own game.

Bob looks around a bit panicked. “Shouldn’t we stop them?”

You can feel uncle Goose and Ice just shaking their heads in disbelief. “I know… I know,” you mutter as you keep running after Mav and Rooster.

Penny finally rushes outside. “Did I miss anything? I closed off the bar. I didn't miss it right?”

Hangman hands her some popcorn (that mysteriously appeared) and a drink. “No you are just on time.”

Suddenly you feel yourself getting thrown over someone’s shoulders. You are about to start screaming, thinking it was one of the college guys. You then recognize the backside you’re looking down at. “Oh hey!” You give it a squeeze.

Maverick and Rooster stopped running and ended up explaining dogfight football to the college guys when they spotted you being carried by Cyclone. They shake their heads.

“As I live and breathe… I never thought I’d see Cyclone running at the beach?“

“Was that supposed to happen?” Bob asks looking around. “Did we all see the same thing?”

Phoenix wraps an arm around Bob’s shoulders. “Cyclones loves Whiskey too much to actually be mad at them. Mav and Roos on the other hand,” she says grimacing.
