Every single time I hear someone referring to a Jewish person as ‘white’ another little piece of my soul dies.
As a non-American Jew, the first time I ever heard Jews being referred to as white was when I was a full grown adult watching an American reality show. I FOR REAL thought they were making that shit up in order to generate buzz and get people talking about the controversy! That’s how foreign the notion was to me. Imagine my shock and horror to discover that THIS IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IN THE UNITED STATES.
It’s the way that referring to Jews as ‘white’ ERASES white people’s antisemitism, it erases our persecution at the hands of white people, it erases our suffering, it erases the OTHERING that Jews had suffered for CENTURIES from actual white people.
Based on what the skin tone of some Jews in a few places might afford them SO LONG AS NO ONE KNOWS THEY’RE JEWISH.
If you have to hide your real identity in order to enjoy the privileges of being perceived as white, YOU’RE NOT WHITE (this is true for Jews just like it is true for other white-passing People of Color).
White passing is not the same as white.
WHITE PASSING IS NOT THE SAME AS WHITE.
Jews are NOT white. Not a single one of us. Not even the ones who can pass as white, let alone all of the Jews who can’t.

A Muslim woman was recently targeted by a Jewish woman in a library setting, and some of ya'll still don't have the comprehension skills to understand the following:
We know not all Jewish people are white -the librarian who wrote about their experiences with this Islamophobic white Jewish woman was precisely just that -situational -how white passing people have weaponized their whiteness/perceived whiteness to be believed and supported when THEY feel wronged. And like many white women do and have done for centuries -use their tears to harm and sometimes end up getting Black and Brown people killed.
We know that hate crimes happen to MANY communities and groups of people around the world -including racialized Jewish people. To say these are mutually exclusive (that only Muslim people are experiencing hate crimes by white people) is NOT what this librarian was talking about. Again, this was something they were addressing as a systemic issue -that when white people target and attack Black, Brown, and Indigenous people (and yes that absolutely includes white-passing folks) it's beyond dangerous and immoral.
I'm STILL reading these long re-blogs and comments on this post I made a week ago and it honestly reminds me of the time when I told a PhD candidate during my Master's degree several years ago, that I don't support Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman because she's a violent zionist -and my previous colleagues response (when she wore a WW shirt the next day) was to say that I was being antisemitic... I genuinely believe some of these people need to be much more reflexive or spend less time on the internet because the cognitive dissonance is just wild to me.
Also to the recent xenophobic, racist, and zionist trash that keep sending me anons (some from this post specifically), a personal FU to you today especially.

Petition to take the phrase "white passing" away from white people forever because y'all do NOT know how to use it correctly
Honestly a lot of people in general don't
The term white passing was created by black people to give them words to speak on the colorism and racism light skinned poc perpetuated towards other poc. It wasn't to dismiss the experiences or oppression of light skinned poc, or to try to say they're "too white" or "not enough of a poc" or any of the shit I have seen it used for.
If you are using the term white passing to talk down to, dismiss, or erase the experiences of light skinned poc instead of to address when a light skinned poc uses being lighter in skin tone to perpetuate colorism and racism towards those with darker skin tones than them you are not using it for its intended purpose quit it.

I know for a fact that people calling Israelis and Jews "white european colonizers" either:
A) have never met an Israeli Jew or a Diaspora Jew, and base their idea of what a Jew looks like from hollywood (which has a long history of casting only white-passing Jews or goyim in Jewish roles, while more 'Jewish-looking' Jews get cast as Arabs or other "brown people") or from those antisemitic khazar theories from neo-nazis and antisemitic leftists where they cherry-pick the most white-passing Jews* and claim that this is what all Jews look like - sometimes they sneak in a few pictures of european gentiles, while claiming it's pictures of Jewish people.
B) are straight up lying and know that they are lying and spreading misinformation
My entire life I have experienced people assuming I'm from an Arab country (an on some occasions, other ethnicities, such as when my older [Indian] co-worker asked if my family was from India because I "looked a lot like her niece who she misses a lot" (her niece lives elsewhere so she doesn't see her often) - which is literally the sweetest way anyone has ever asked me where I'm from). I have experimenced islamophobia (which got especially bad in Europe after 9/11) despite not being Muslim, because people assume I'm an Arab, and assume that Arab = Muslim. While Arabs and Arabic culture is definitely a part of middle eastern culture, there as also many other ethnicities, ethno-religions and cultures making up the tapestry that is the middle east; we're a lot more diverse than people give us credit for.
Also, tangentially related: in my experience, the most anti-zionist jews are usually the most white-passing ones, which makes me wonder if being able to pass as a goy means they have less experience with being discriminated against, and thus are more able to put energy and focus into supporting other minorities as well as not seeing the reason why other Jews cannot simply assimilate into gentile society? Maybe they assume that all other Jews (who are not as white-passing) share their experiences of not being faced with bigotry, and therefore think that Jews who feel unsafe and scared because of rising antisemitism are simply 'being paranoid' or 'exaggerating'.

It's really weird being part white and part native American but looking like the white half of my family because I feel personally attacked and personally invested pretty much every single time someone brings up something that has to do with native politics, Like land back movements and the missing and murdered indigenous women crisis, but whenever I try to speak out about it people treat me like it's none of my business, despite the fact that I grew up being raised by my grandparents and having to hear stories of everything that they endured. It was such a big part of my culture growing up, especially since my dad's family was racist and didn't want a lot to do with me because of my mom being mostly native, and now I feel like I'm not allowed to talk about it at all without people treating me weird.

I want to talk about the terms White, Straight and Cis passing privilage... And how they're kind of inaccurate to the average passing persons experience.
It is not a privilege to have to shove down, hide, or escape a part of your identity for your well being and safety. It is also not a privilege to have people ignore oart of your identity for their comfortability. The only privilege is when people know and respect your identity unfaulteringly.
Mixed folks who have lighter skin or straightened hair aren't experiencing privilege. They're experiencing white people projecting whiteness and erasing their color. That is hurtful and any advantages are quickly lost if you dare argue with them on how they see you. It's also lost if you stand up for fellow poc or the issues their community faces.
Bisexuals who are having either Straight and Gay people assign them heterosexual even though many preach "don't assume or force anyone to out themselves." It's not a privilege I imagine tl be told that you look straight when you aren't. I as a masc butch I don't feel validated being called straight why would a bisexual?? Also with the ammount of families who project their want for you to be with the opposite sex/gender even after you come out is a major fucking loss actually.
Being cis passing means shit comments, the risk of being outed and then hurt, and other queers projecting their belief there is a "gay look" on you to the point where they'll act like you're on cis peoples side for "following the binary too close."
Personally I think it should be called _____ passing safety or something similar?
Because that's the main reason people hide themselves to pass. And it's the reason they don't argue when someone assigns them and identity. Is because of fear of backlash, harm, or even the risk of death.
Idk it's not fully fleshed (So feel free to add your own thoughts on the matter) out but privilege implies gain, and none of those really gain youanything. Especially if it can be taken at. moments notice if they learn who you actually are.

"As a person of colour myself who is not mixed race, my own “take” is a blend of the two perspectives described above. I believe that white-passing folks of colour do experience both racism and some aspects of white privilege. As a result, I believe that white-passing people of colour can and do belong in the antiracist movement. However, I also believe that the people centred in antiracist activism should be those most likely to experience severe racist harm and violence: folks who are likely to be stopped and profiled on the street, imprisoned or killed by the state or denied access to essential resources for life—most often people who are visibly racialized, particularly Black and Indigenous folks."

Really hate the trends of buccal fat removal and intense botox and tanning because it's yet another way for white women to cosplay women of colour. Like oh suddenly you want high cheekbones and olive skin and slightly slanted eyes??? Why are you cosplaying mediterranean/swana and indigenous women?
And then they do orientalist or blatant Latine fetishy shit like "cast a spell on a man to make him fall for you" when the spell is for a fucking headache or to boost your immune system
Like no I don't fucking care about your "egg cleanse" leave brujas ALONE!!!

For this episode of “Aso is insecure about being a white passing Indigenous person and wonders if they are only insecure because they look very white while wanting to present more Indigenous and be correctly identified as an Indigenous person. But they know that even though they want that, they probably wouldn’t if they looked more traditionally “Indigenous” because of the effects of systemic racism and bigotry. But they also know that this feeling is only present because they live in a system that identifies people based off of what they look like and that this wouldn’t be an issue if Turtle Island wasn’t colonised by a bunch of crazy weirdos. They also know that this is them also possibly just being privileged for having the luxury to complain, but also that they want to feel like they have a better connection to their history and culture without feeling like a parasite or leech” I feel funky.

A Handy guide on if you are just racially white or white presenting/passing
this is not an exclusive guide, it can only be determined by an individual of their identity, however i know there is a lot of confusion on being racially white & non european or being a racially ambiguous white presenting/passing person. this is mainly a guide for white passing/presenting people who i've seen are confused on their identity and need some basic guidelines!
White presenting is used to refer to any ethnic group. White passing is used specifically to refer to the Black diaspora.
So,
First thing is first, what are you ethnically? If the answer is anything mixed with non-european (Grandparents or closer, being 100%), you can be classed as an ethnic minority.
Now, how often are you perceived? As a white person? As your non-european heritage?
Is there any "what are you *really*?" questions, any follow-up questions when you say that you are a white person?
If the answer is:
You are solely perceived as white, you are a racially white ethnic minority.
You are perceived as your non-european heritage an equal amount of times you are perceived as white, you're white passing/presenting poc.
You are perceived solely as your ethnic minority, you are poc - no white presenting/passing labels.
You are perceived an equal amount white and non-european, with follow up questions or doubt about being 100%/racially white - you're white passing/presenting poc and racially ambiguous.
You are perceived only as non-european identities, with follow up questions about what kind of brown/black/East Asian you are - you're racially ambiguous and poc.
This must also take into account your race in your home countries, the country and environment you grew up in, and the country and environment you currently live in - to form your racial identity as accurately as possible.
