The city holds a census each October where volunteers count the number of squirrels and cats. Cats and dogs are the number one predator of squirrels in town, cats were added to the ordinance against pets running at large in 2002. Current counts show the white squirrel population declining. Last fall volunteers counted 64 albino squirrels and 920 grey squirrels. In 2021 they counted 69 white to 860 grey. At the current rate of decline the white squirrel population could be gone by 2034.
