I don’t think the TOH fandom has talked enough about what Belos’s thought process/emotions are about recreating his brother over and over. It’s clear from the memories of kid Philip that he looked up to his big brother and loved him a lot, and then older Philip was hurt by Wittebro’s “betrayal” to the side of witches, and now here he is, a very old man, trying to bring his brother (who he presumably killed) back, over and over again. He didn’t have to do that. He didn’t have to recreate his brother over and over in the hopes that this time he wouldn’t betray him.
I think it’s very human of him. We know IRL people will do anything to talk to their deceased loved ones again (like paying fake psychics exorbitant amounts of money), so why, in a world with real magic, wouldn’t they do the same?
I want to see Belos’s pain. I want Luz to call out how fucked-up this is and then for Belos to go “isn’t there anyone you’d like to see again?” and then we see flashbacks to Luz’s father, and Belos tells her that he can bring her loved ones back. We see Luz tempted for a split second to figure out how to create a grimwalker, before realizing it’s not real and it wouldn’t be her father, it’d be a new person, and it’d be a fucked-up thing to do.
I want to see Belos, the most evil person on the boiling isles, tormented by what he did to his brother. I want to see him go full cold-emotionless monster. I want to see him have a mental breakdown. I just want to explore Belos’s fucked up little psyche. Yeah.

I haven't seen anyone talk about the possibility that it was Caleb, not Philip that built the orginal door. It's Caleb who was probably more interested in traversing realms and explains why Philip would have lost it, is that it was Caleb's and was lost after their fight. Additionally Philip talks about feeling as if the Titan was hiding Glyphs from him, that he never found a Gylph, but Caleb found them and showed him.

So anyway
Caleb Wittebane/The Wittebro/whatever you call him carves stuff out of wood, right? We see him carving Philip’s mask, and it’s believed that he started the Clawthorne tradition of palisman carving.
So Headcanon that when he was alive, he carved a ton of toys for his kid when he and his partner were expecting a baby. But he never got to see them play with them.

More evidence to add to the “Hunter loses his left eye” theory. I know I know, you’ve probably already seen this theory a hundred times, and already have seen all the evidence for it, but with Hollow Mind out I just wanted to add a bit of my own cents into it.
From the portraits in Hollow Mind, it seems that Belos’s brother got with and had a kid with a Clawthorne (which makes a lot of sense), so that would technically make Hunter a clawthorne as well. And let’s just say clawthornes don’t have a great history with having two normal eyes…

What if the human Gwendolyn told Luz about wasn't Philip/Belos but Caleb? 'cuz yk, the show kinda implied he's a Clawthorne ancestor. And Gwendolyn knew about the human because of her ancestor (great grandmother i think??). Also she said he disappeared one day, maybe that's what everyone thought happened after Philip killed him.

Random theory/HC time.
So, if the "Whittebro's lover was a Clawthorne ancestor" theory is true, I wonder, how come the Clawthornes don't know about it. So, if this theory was true, Clawthornes would be a very old witch family. And having a human as one of the ancestors sounds like a pretty noteworthy part of the family history. Not saying it would be impossible for it to be lost to time, but also, not super likely, even in 400 years.
So, I'm thinking this. Whittebro fell in love with a witch, and she got pregnant. Phillip, in his rage and hatred, killed his own brother for perceived betrayal and he probably tried to kill his witch lover too.
She escaped, barely, with her unborn child but she heard Phillip swearing revenge. He swears he would kill her, her family and the child, that he would kill the "unholy spawn of his brother's betrayal".
She knows that she is in danger, and worse, her child is. She hides as far away as she can, where Phillip will probably never find her, but she still fears his retribution.
So, when the child is born, they don't learn about who their father was. Oh, they do learn about their father being a kind man, a great woodcarver, and an adventurous spirit, but they never learn that their father is human. Because a rumour like that would spread like wildfire and could reach Phillip's ears. He is still out there, looking for them, plotting his revenge.
The witch knows she had to keep her child safe, so she, and maybe her parents, remain the only ones aware that the child's parent is a human. To everyone else's knowledge, the baby's father was a witch.
So, no Clawthorne after her death is aware of their ancestry.

SPOILER WARNING FOR HOLLOW MIND!
So everyone is saying that Phillip's brother, affectionately named Whittebro, could very well be an ancestor of the Clawthorne family, as the witch he appears to be hanging with looks a lot like EOOTP!Eda
Tumblr media
And I'm sure if anyone is following this theory, they also made the theory that Whittebro, since he's into carving, made Flapjack, hence why birds are a Clawthorne thing.
Tumblr media
Who wants to bet that Whittebro made the whole Palismen trend. Like, this human weirdo just shows up out of nowhere and out of boredom decides "Hey, Imma do some whittling" and makes a bird out of some wood. But then is just shocked beyond belief when it starts fluttering around and chirping!
Clawthorne ancestor happens to see him and asks how it did it. He has no clue. She has no clue. So they start hanging out.
Eventually they make a business out of it, carving little critters that Whittebro humbly calls Palismen and giving them out to witches everywhere, especially since they see that it helps with their magic. Palismen become very popular companions and the Clawthornes make a name for themselves as the Godparents of Palismen.
And naturally, Phillip has to spit on his creation by destroying them in order to absorb their power. Once again tarnishing his brother's memory.
...just a thought.

so i've been thinking a LOT about the collector. yes, he's evil, but i love the little dude sm man
but that little song/poem thing he sang in that scene in hollow mind - it caught my attention.
To you who stray so far from home
To me, who's trapped beneath these bones
We'll play forever, me and you
When you paint the land in nine bright hues!
let's (very loosely) analyze this shit.
To you who stray so far from home At first glance, I thought of the humans who came to the boiling Isles. Phillip, his brother, and Luz. It's the most obvious meaning, don't you think? Of course, it could always have a double meaning - which I'm certain in does - but I'm fairly sure that here, he's addressing Phillip. One who strayed so far from home, like Luz.
To me, who's trapped beneath these bones I've seen a lot of people theorize that this entails to the fact that the collector is quite literally trapped underneath the Titan's bones. I suppose it makes sense, since I cant think of anything else it would mean.
We'll play forever, me and you THIS is where the Collector!Luz theory comes in. Connecting to the first two lines, it obviously refers to the Collector 'bonding' with lost humans. Now, this can suggest two things.
Phillip and/or Whittebro have been possessed by the Collector.
Luz is going to be possessed by the collector next.
Now, as much as I love Luz and want the best for her, I am so ready for the funky little moon-face ghost child to pull some bill cipher type of shit
When you paint the land in nine bright hues! Obviously refers to dividing the land into nine specific types of magic, not sure what else.
And that's all I've got for now! I did see a post comparing these lines to something of Shakespeare's and unfortunately I can't find it - it was so interesting though sjfhdjsjhf

Whittebro Thoughts
Although we got a pretty abbreviated version of Whittebane backstory in this ep, the full season probably would have had a series of flashbacks slowly showing their story, I think we can work out some details of their story. Two orphans come to town. Gravesfield seems to be pretty into Witch Hunting, which historically means they’re really into using accusations of Witchcraft to punish social outcasts and let the community’s leaders steal property from people. The Whittebane brothers arrive in town, they’re orphans, so already at the bottom of the pecking order. The fact that they arrive in town AS orphans tells us that they probably got driven out of some other colony after their parents died. Phillip seems to be a weird kid who enjoys wearing his weird wooden horn-mask thing, and it’s not hard to imagine them building additional parallels between Phillip and Luz. So, the Whittebanes arrive in a society already prone to target them, probably having already been driven out of a similar community once before, with no resources and no support. Older brother Caleb does what desperate people do in this scenario, he makes himself useful to those in power and pre-empts any accusations of Witchcraft against his brother by becoming a witch hunter himself. Caleb knows that this whole thing is a cruel farce, but it’s keeping them fed and safe, and if he wasn’t doing this the town leaders would find somebody else to stomp around and accuse widows of consorting with demons. Maybe he even uses his station to protect the occasional widow or orphan, using his “Expertise” to say “No, this one isn’t a Witch” whenever he thinks he can get the town to back off. But Phillip is young, and like young children without parents, he idolizes his older brother/guardian and takes everything he does at face value. Of COURSE Witches are a dangerous threat to the souls of humanity. Of COURSE his brother is the great Witch Hunter, finding and exposing those who consort with the powers of darkness. Anyway, enter Evelyn, an honest-to-titan Witch with magic powers from the Demon Realm. She probably finds the portal and starts poking around town. As the local Witch Hunter, Caleb Whittebane is called up to investigate this strange woman. Caleb meets Evelyn, sees that she’s not a threat, and gets to know her. Eventually, she invites him to stay with her in the demon realm. Caleb, who hates the whole Witch Hunter act, agrees, looking forward to settling down with his hot witch girlfriend to a quiet life of farming and woodcarving, probably invites his brother along with him. But for Phillip, this was never an act, it was a mission. We know the rest

Belos didn’t make the portal.
In Elsewhere and Elsewhen, when Luz asks him what he tried to kill them to get, if it was for the portal, he’s like no, this is for something else.
We find out later that something else is contacting the Collector. In his diary, Philip had mentioned finding the Collector to help him build a portal home, but there’s two things to note:
1) we found out in this episode that he sometimes lies in his diary intentionally, either as cover for his cruelty and his crimes in case anyone should happen to read it, or because he intends to submit it somewhere to be read for generations to come and doesn’t want to look like a prick
2) at the end of the episode he indeed summons the Collector, but for the purpose of talking to them about his plan to (inferred then, confirmed later in Hollow Mind) destroy all witches and magickind
This means that one of two things has happened:
1) he never needed the Collector to get home; he only said that in his diary to either throw off suspicion should anyone read it, or so that when he submits his diary in the future to a library he doesn’t look like a monster
2) he intended to find the Collector to get home initially, but pivoted once his hatred of magickind overpowered his desire to go home
Personally I think it’s the first, since he states that he’s grown much older since coming here and he claims to already have all the portal ingredients, and the ending confirms whatever made him despise magickind so much has already happened.
Regardless:
I think it was his brother who actually finished the portal, and then chose not to use it because he had become happy in this world. He’d fallen in love with both this world, its people, and one of its people in particular.
We can all tell by reading the background paintings that the act of loving this world and falling in love with a witch enraged Philip and led to him murdering his brother. We also know that wherever they were at the time, it was burning.
This post details why Whittebro might actually be an ancestor of the Clawthornes, but I’m going to use it for my theory, too-
Because if the place that was burning was their home, and that home was the first home of the Clawthornes...
And if Whittebro or his wife had decided to hide the portal prior to Philip dropping by...
Then that explains why it was buried in the ground for teenaged Eda of all people to find in the future.
Because Eda finds the portal buried in a part of the estate she’s never ventured to before, right near an old gate that she never ventures through. Had she chosen to check out what was beyond the gate I bet anything it would’ve been the ruins of the old Clawthorne family home of yesteryear.
Philip decided to kill his brother for falling in love with a witch but I think there was another component- that someone, either Whittebro or his wife, suspected the darkness in his heart and refused to give him the portal when he asked for it, afraid of what he’d do with it.
Considering that in any scenario Whittebro had enough time to fall in love and build up an entire marriage without his brother knowing, I could believe they’d had a previous falling out and that Philip came looking for his brother at hearing he’d managed to create a portal. Was probably pissed that Whittebro finished a portal but had chosen not to use it because he was happier here than he’d ever been where they came from.
This theory being true would also mean that what is old is new again- Luz having a way home but choosing to make a home in The Boiling Isles because she was happier here than she’d ever been on earth. And that’s a cool literary device I could see Dana using.

||The Owl House Spoilers and Theory||
So me and wife were talking about how it's dumb that people would think that Hunter and Luz would betray eachother as the Whittebros 2.0. Like why would one try to murder the other? Luz has already shown she tries not to use violence to solve things and Hunter and her have already made a bond.
Then it hit me
Hunter would sacrifice himself if it ment helpling Luz and the others
Hunter is basically made of pure magic due to his Grimwalker status. They need magic to get home. You know what the most powerful source of magic is? A galdorstone. Where is the most in reach galdorstone?
Hunter's fucking heart
This realization is making me rethink the whole leaked screenshot and I'm absolutely terrified for my boy....
