#who taught the clones to shanty!?
Text
i am once again thinking about the ghost crew and singing
kanan and hera teaching each other songs when they meet, sharing their culture with each other - kanan because anything other than the simplest things about being a padawan make the grief unbearable, hera because she might have left because her father wouldn't protect more than their planet but she misses home still - both of them finding out so much about the other as they do, and maybe they dont realise it but starting to fall in love
zeb joining them, also grieving, also missing home, one he doesn't think he can have again, and the three of them sharing songs after a while because remembering the best hurts a little less.
sabine joins them, also missing home, and that's when something that they did at night, when they missed home too much changes. the other three teach her a song one night and the next day it's stuck in her head. so she sings, and because she does, kanan who taught her it, joins in followed by the others. they aren't even in the same parts of the ship and they realise quickly after this happens a few times that it helps. they all know where everyone is on the ship if they're singing, and it also means they all know everyone is on the ship too. so it becomes a thing, singing together.
by the time ezra joins them, its common enough that someone will be absentmindedly sing while they do something and the other spectres wil just join in. it catches him off guard a few times once he does join them, and is more than a little intimidating too, because they seem like such a cohesive group in part because of it, and he has the least songs to teach the others because he lost his family when he was so little and theres not many people who would teach a street kid songs. but the others are more than willing to share theirs, and he eventually is more than willing to learn. by the time they join the rest of the rebellion, its even a game for ezra and zeb to run around singing at the top of their lungs to try and drown the other out, a game/fight that might have started accidentally but that neither are willing to back down from.
rex teaches them songs too once he joins the rebellion, part-time spectre or no. a few of the songs he knows are from mandalore, but there are others that sabine doesn't recognise at all until rex explains that during the clone wars they'd come up with their own too. these shanties come with stories too sometimes, and he laughs as he explains some of them, and talks about his brothers after too, singing songs while they lived on seelos hunting joopas.
ahsoka joins them sometimes too, before. she helps kanan remember jedi songs he'd forgotten, and teaches them songs from shili. they don't sing those for a while after fulcrum is assumed dead, but they start singing them again eventually because it's easier to remember her that way.
when kallus joins the rebellion, he might not have been as homesick as the rest of them had been, but he did feel as lost. zeb is the first one perhaps to teach him any of his songs, but the others do too, and i think he'd have a few he count teach them too, regardless of where on coruscant you headcanon him to be from ajxnnsf
