Behind the Scenes of Tooth and Claw - Part Eight
Excerpts from Steve Aston’s interview with Pauline Collins:
Pauline says that the episode is “very scary”.
She says she found playing the terse monarch fairly tricky - particularly wearing the costume.  “It was the heaviest I’ve ever worn - it was like carrying several small children around with me at a time!” she reveals.
This isn’t Pauline’s first time working with the Time Lord, as she appeared as Samantha Briggs in The Faceless Ones, alongside the second Doctor Who, Patrick Troughton.
But having worked with current Doctor, David Tennant, she’s convinced he’ll be one of the best.
“He seems to combine authority, humour, and quirkiness which, in a way, is an amalgam of all the best Doctors”
Excerpt from Jason Arnopp’s set report in DWM 369:
David Tennant, it should be noted, employs ‘method running’.  DWM watches him as one take begins: The Doctor is speedily ushering Rose and Queen Victoria around a corner. As he starts moving after them, David glances back over his shoulder with an expression of genuine terror, even though the camera can’t see his face.  That’s method running.

Behind the Scenes of Tooth and Claw - Part Seven
Excerpts from Jason Arnopp’s set report in DWM 369:
[Concerning the CGI werewolf] “You have to have a certain amount of faith in the CGI boys not to stitch you up,” adds David. “You could do all this terrified acting and this pink, fluffy thing appears! But no, the wolf isn’t difficult. It’s not problematic and it doesn’t take up much time, because it’s not there. You just have to keep communication going: there was one point where I was acting merrily away, and Euros came over - it turned out we were picturing two completely different things.”
During some of the episode’s 40-odd werewolf shots, fresh-faced performance artist Josh Green appears on camera moving like the beast itself, providing handy reference material for The Mill.  Unfortunately for the cast and their actorly focus, the man is wearing a skin-tight white leotard with his muscle groups highlighted in black felt-tip pen. Furthermore, atop his head is a silver caving helmet. On top of that is a two-foot pole with a blue ball on the end.
“Josh is a lovely guy,” says Euros. “It works well as a reference for the Mill, so they can see how the wolf moves.  But it’s no help to the actors - they see a comedy man in a ridiculous leotard!”
Asked how she’s coping with Mr. Comedy Leotard, Billie laughs, “I’m coping better than some of the ladies on set!”  It seems Josh’s lithe physique is providing some comic relief…
“Every time I walk on set, I’m accompanied by giggles and guffaws,” he grins.  “I’m getting laughed at quite a lot. Half my job, I think, is to entertain people as a six-foot-two baby with fake muscles drawn on and wearing what I call my Ultra Lupine Stunt Hat! It’s all part of the fun”

Behind the Scenes of Tooth and Claw - Part Six
Excerpts from the Radio Times’ interview with Pauline Collins [who played Queen Victoria in Tooth and Claw] - by Anna Hunt:
Another amazing feat was negotiating the royal regalia during filming. “The most challenging part of playing Queen Victoria was the wonderful but very heavy costume,” says Collins. “There were so many layers to the skirts that I felt like I was carrying several small children around with me all the time.”
(Billie Piper’s clothes as Rose are worth a close look as well, as costume designer Louise Page reveals: “I’ve got a little twist in the t-shirt, which people won’t see that much of, but there’s something on the t-shirt that for me is a nod to the episode.”)
And as for the Doctor, in Pauline Collins’ opinion, David Tennant is the best Time Lord of them all. “David’s Doctor has a darker side to him, an unpredictability,” she says. “You imagine he could take the Doctor to dark places. As Queen Victoria, I don’t really like the Doctor because of this. I don’t know where he’s come from or where he’s really going and it rubs me up the wrong way.  As myself though, I think he’s the best Doctor so far.”

Behind the Scenes of Tooth and Claw - Part Five
Excerpt from the Series 2 Press Launch interviews:
David on his parents’ reaction to him playing The Doctor:
“They’re West of Scotland Presbyterian parents, they tell everyone else what they think, I don’t hear!  They came down and visited the set actually.  We had a readthrough for episode two, a couple of actors couldn’t make it. Because it’s set in Scotland they were delighted to be asked to read in. My Mum played Lady Isobel and my Dad played Captain Reynolds and they were in seventh heaven. And they were genuinely cheesed off when they didn’t get asked to play the parts for real!  I was like ‘chill-out Mum and Dad, back in your box!’“
