Top Five Favourite Kamen Rider Whump Scenes

Number Five: Shoutaro is kidnapped and tortured

Kamen Rider W ep 16 - in this episode, Shoutaro has his injured arm stood on and Philip is forced to listen to his pained screaming. Throughout the episode, Shoutaro is held captive and is also suspended from the ceiling with rope dangling over a set of spikes ready to kill him should he fall. Philip also has his fair share of whump in this episode.

Number Four: Sento is Poisoned

Kamen Rider Build ep 34 - Sento is poisoned by an alien poison and has been given three days to live. He spends a lot of the episode in pain wearing an oxygen mask whilst his friends try to come up with a plan to save him.

Number Three: Eiji and Ankh's Fight in the Ocean

Kamen Rider OOOs ep 46 - damn this scene gets me in the feels every time. The perfect mixture of physical and emotional whump. Eiji's body is failing him and Ankh is terrified. Cue ep 47 where Eiji becomes weak and confused ... and Ankh's face seeing him like that :(

Number Two: Taiga is Seriously Injured by Graphite

Kamen Rider Build ep 37 - Taiga is badly wounded and suffering from internal bleeding. All of his doctor friends are terrified by the severity and he requires urgent surgery, but his friend who has to perform surgery on him is being blackmailed into killing him on the operating table.

Number One: Horobi in the Basement

Kamen Rider Zero One ep 22 - a shorter whump scene in comparison to others on this list, but I'm a sucker for villain whump and this was the first scene that came to mind when making this list. Horobi has a breakdown during captivity, he spends a lot of the show being manipulated and brainwashed, as well as being the person to manipulate others, such as Jin, due to following the commands of the Ark.

+ Top Five Favourite Kamen Rider Whumpees

Number Five: Kazumin from Kamen Rider Build

Kazumin is wonderfuly whumped in Build, but in my opinion not enough. Considering the horrors he has endured during the war, I wish there was more angst for him. Maybe I'm just being greedy though.

Number Four: Sora from Kamen Rider Wizard

As I said earlier, I am a sucker for villain whumpees, so naturally Sora is here. He also does not have a lot of whump scenes, but I think the ones he does have are very underrated.

Number Three: Philip from Kamen Rider W

This poor guy goes through it on this show. Not only is one of the main plot points of the show Philip having to physically collapse to use his powers, but throw in amnesia, trauma and overwhelming powers and you have yourself a wide variety of whump scenes.

Number Two: Parad from Kamen Rider Ex Aid

Another sad little guy that goes through it during the later eps of the show (and he kinda deserves it). Parad's crippling fear and anxiety at finally understanding the value of life makes for some great emotional whump, and it helps that I love started-off-as-a-villain-then-learned-empathy-and-became-an-anti-hero character arcs like his

Number One: Ankh from Kamen Rider OOOs

Naturally anyone who has been following me for a while is probably not surprised that Ankh is my number one. He is the blueprint of a villain/anti-hero whumpee who becomes the good guy at the expense of himself, but somehow still managing to be a bit of a dick about it. I love him. His whump scenes are also my favourite but since I have included him in previous posts, he did not make it onto the Top Five Kamen Rider Whump Scenes of this post. I could ramble about this man's character arc all day. And I have. I simply love his character and his brash stubbornness that is secretly masking insecurity and love.

Well, I hope this post shed some light on my own personal preferences! This list was super hard to whittle down, and bear in mind that my preferences shift all the time but realistically you can never go wrong with introducing me to a prickly morally dubious whumpee with a troubled past. I am weak for them.

I’m currently not watching anything new, but AM going through a book phase??? (Haven’t finished a book in years, so thank you audiobooks and also probably Vyvanse?) Also I’m pretty sure some came from a rec post here???

I’d say that all of these books have:

- a focus on found family (!!!!)

- an angsty/whumpable male main character

- some hurt/comfort for said mc

- fantasy/magic with (imo) good world building

and are NOT driven by romance (anything that is there is side-plot), and do not include graphic sexual content (or, at least, it was insignificant enough for me to ignore it - same goes for the listed tropes, really - I was able to read with my fav trope blinders on, which doesn’t mean other stuff wasn’t there, but I can’t say that for every book)

1. Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom (Kaz)

2. A Darker Shade of Magic/A Gathering of Shadows (Kell)

3. Dark Rise/Dark Heir (Will)

4. Sword Catcher (Kel)

(Why do they all have single syllable names mostly starting with K and ending with L?)

ANYWAY highly recommend (in order, from 1-4), and would love to know if you (or any followers) have recs for fic (of the above) OR other books that check the boxes (esp if heavy on the comfort!!)

BLESS YOU!!!! I love getting book recs especially fantasy books with little sex/romance!!! That's super rare nowadays so I thank you! I recently finished reading both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and loved them both (despite them being very romance heavy I found that I didn't mind it at all and really enjoyed the world and the story) and now I'm eager for some more fantasy books to read. Thank you for the recs!! I'll go give them a look!

A list of my favorite whump and non-whump House MD fics

I've read some really great fics for House so I thought I'd share them here in case anyone wanted to read them (and really because I want to talk about them)

I'd say about half of these are Chase-centric and about half are general character stories

Bone Deep and Week One of Med School by julienwrites are hands down the two BEST House fics I've ever read and the best sickfics I've ever read. I dont know how this author writes so well its actual magic. Both are Chase sickfics set in season 7 and 6, respectively, and full of good sick whump and some very good wholesome comfort. I enjoy sickfic whump about as much as other types of whump but WOW these were INCREDIBLE!!!

Next up is Can't Change Anything by NAOA. There's some absolutely WONDERFUL emotional whump in this. Centered around Chase and his reaction to his stepmother being the team's newest patient. Wonderful character writing in this (I mean the characterization is frankly tremendous in all of them but in this one especially because of the emotional nature of the whump). Also typical House-being-an-asshole shenanigans written amazingly. Original trio fic.

Declare the Past, Diagnose the Present by andrealyn. Wow. Just WOW. General character fic that's slightly whumpy but moreso just very entertaining. Loooooooove the character dialogue in this! And the descriptions are awesome! Just a really well rounded impressive story. Original trio fic.

Let the Nerf-Bat Wars Begin by OldToadWoman is a really funny and entertaining fic set in season 6. Hilarious House and Wilson shenanigans and fantastic dynamics between the team (ironically, over their shared hatred for team building!). I think i was grinning the whole time reading this lol. Honestly one of the best non-angsty fics I've read. Highly recommend!

Self-Defense, or The One Where Foreman Teaches Chase How to Throw a Punch by ignaz. Lovely short fic with the original trio. Intended as pre-slash but can be read as platonic too. Not whump but slightly angsty and overall a good story :)

The Unwilling Host by jmtorres. A fantastic funny fluff fic about Thanksgiving at House's house. Very sweet found family dynamics between House, Wilson, Cuddy, and the original trio. Wonderful to read after all the canonical (and fanfictional) angst of this show! I loved reading this so much!

Aaaaaaand right back into whump! These Walls Are Suffocating Me by awkwardanxiousasexual is an amazing Chase centered whump fic about claustrophobia. A 5+1 fic set throughout his life with some magnificent descriptions of panic!!

Last but not least! Wonder, Wonder by A_Concerned_Citizen. Character studies of the original trio from Wilson's perspective. Mostly Chase centric. Some fantastic "missing scene" parts, and lovely internal Wilson thoughts!!

Two show recommendations!

One Day, it's on Netflix. Leo Woodall has a good amount of physical and emotional whump- episodes 5 (physical: hungover, throws up [not my thing but won't yuck yums]) and emotional: on the verge of tears, tears, emotional breakdown, pained sobbing) episode 6 (drunk, confused, embarrassed, lonely) episode 12 (emotional: on the verge of tears, voice crack, sheds tears- and later in the episode, the same thing again, except he's holding back tears for a while), and episode 14- (physical: beat up, drunk, bruised and bloody, throws up, tended to and cleaned up by ex) and (emotional: drunk tearfulness, sobbing, tears, and a lot of palpable grief)

The other show is SouthLAnd. Too many episodes to cover. Physical whump: back injury, chronic pain, addiction, characters get beat up, shot. Emotional whump: on the verge of tears, tears, sobbing, grief, emotional/physical trauma, ptsd. Great show!

This video clip is one of my favourite scenes from Till the End of the Moon, when the MC is being tormented by his past. The tears are never-ending. (See below the video for more context). Be warned it has mild spoilers⚠️

If you have never seen 'Till the End of the Moon', do yourself a massive fucking favour and watch it. Every episode has a huge amount of whump and angst, and plenty of caretaking as well. Also, the show is just incredible overall.

Summary: Tantai Jin is a captive prince who has difficulty understanding emotions and other people. He is destined to be the Devil God and his life full of endless pain and suffering. Li Su Su is a moralistic heroine who is destined to be a divine goddess. She is sent back 500 years to kill Tantai Jin and Save The World. Despite her hatred for the Devil God, the two fall in love, and Li Su Su teaches Tantai Jin about kindness and empathy.

Kawabe is crushed by machinery and there is no doctor or anaesthetic. His teacher has to free him and stitch him up before he suffers more blood loss and his friends have to hold him down when he is being rescued
