#why did I choose Babs for POV

i'm feeling sad about what DC's doing to batman, so maybe some batfam fluff? o:
Allow me to take a moment to say: canon is but a guideline, a sandbox in which to play, a faint echo in the wind that one can choose to listen to OR to ignore. I ignore it pretty hard.
-
Oracle knows that they’ll be calling it an early night before any of the others realize — though that knowledge doesn’t exceed the others’ by as much as it usually does. It’s only a matter of moments after she messages A at the Cave that Batman is asking her how much more activity to expect for the night. As a literal question, the answer is none, and they both know better than to bring up that the unexpected is what they’re patrolling for, because a certain little gremlin would latch on to that and refuse to listen to anything else.
It’s not intended as a literal question, though. He’s double-checking that there isn’t trouble, yes, it’s very Batman of him, but this is also a lead-up to heading back to the Cave. He read the same cues she did and knows the smartest thing is to go get some sleep, because he has to lead by example or else the real target will never follow—
Over the comms, Nightwing is yelping (theatrically, non-alarmingly, laughter mixed in so she they all can hear he’s not in danger) as Robin chases after him on a rooftop, sloppy moves visible from a camera across the street. The youngest bird is the target; he’s the one that alerted Batman that it’s time to head home, after yawning twice within one minute. Apparently he’d elected to take mock offense to Nightwing having yawned first, which had led to him accidentally doing so himself.
That hadn’t been the first, though, as Nightwing points out: “Hood started it!” he yells over his shoulder, and then Oracle, amused, switches cameras to get a better angle on Robin screeching to a halt, whipping around, and taking off in a slightly different direction. Red Hood barks out a laugh before echoing Nightwing’s yelp, and she can’t see him but she can imagine the look on his face going from amusement to surprise, with a good hint of alarm, as he turns tail and makes an effort to flee.
Oracle’s not worried about what Robin might do. Those days are long past. She keeps an eye on their locations, just like she’s doing for the rest of the family, just like she always does, while triple-checking criminal inactivity. She does hope, though, that there will be pictures of whatever the result of this mock chase is.
Hood and Nightwing briefly jump onto the semi-private channel with Batman and herself, develop their plan, and then return to the main channel to collaborate their escape as dramatically as possible. Robin, not that he would admit to it, is loving it, but the kid won’t be able to catch them both. They’ll wear him down some and then he should be more agreeable to going home.
—except Batman is still on the quieter channel and is proposing an alternate plan, one that she prefers.
Later, when she can’t help but grin at a picture of Dick, Jason, and Damian all piled around Bruce and in varying degrees of actually being on the couch, all asleep, she has to give B credit. She wouldn’t have thought that he could get three of the boys to get some sleep, not at the same time. Alfred will love photo evidence of the feat.

kinda related to the other ask; do you think sirius loves james more than remus? ive see that or “sirius would choose james over remus” written outright in so many wolfstar fics even if its not remus’ pov and it makes me so sad… i think he has something special and different with both of them, why does he have to choose i hate it :((
hi hi!! i too have seen that around a lot. i think it definitely makes for an interesting dynamic and good angst for r/s but even if i think that conceivably yes, he might, if we're talking about a canon reading...it hurts my feeble little r/s heart just a bit too much and so i pretend not to see it. also i'm not really interested in the canon of the harry potter books. from remus' pov, its clear why he'd think this--sirius definitely loved james, and no i don't necessarily think this was strictly platonic. but in my view it's a completely different love to the one he had for remus. he absolutely admired james over remus but--at least this is how i choose to pretend it works--i think he had a deeper romantic affection for remus, because there's less of a brotherly dynamic there than there is between him and james. my sirius, at least, loved remus from the start, so from his side this would've affected his platonic relationship with remus in a way i don't necessarily think it did with james. but that's personal hc! and in response to not wanting him having to choose...i'd argue the solution to that is the j/r/s ship (which is where i'm going to seize an opportunity to recommend @dykesiriusblack 's insanely violently brilliant wolfstarbucks series the blood in your mouth !! no choosing no one's left out !! just love !!)
thank you for the ask babs!

Such a Joker (51)
Part 50 Here!
~o0o~
I scan through paint swatches, holding it up to the walls of the nursery contemplating the vast difference in the outcome. "I like this blue." Jeremiah picks up a swatch and tapes it to the wall. I smile as he narrows his hands focusing on the paint. He nods looking around the room. "We can put both the cribs against the wall here and place the changing station in the middle. Rocking chairs in either corner." He smiles with his accomplished plan.
"What do you think, boys?" He asks kneeling at my stomach. I scoff smiling, "How do you know these boys of yours aren't girls?" Jeremiah leans down pressing his ear on my swollen belly.
"Hmm. Yes. What was that? Of course, I'll let mommy know."
Jeremiah stands cupping my face. "You're children don't like the vitamin shake you drink." I roll my eyes walking away and taping a light pink swatch of paint on the wall.
Jeremiah raises a brow smirking. "Really, (Y/n)?" I shrug beaming. "You never know, Jer."
~
I look out the large window looking at the starved and rotten Gotham. I sigh sipping at my morning tea Ecco brought me.
"You're sighing again." I look over at her smiling. "You say that a lot." "It's because you sit there looking like a princess waiting for someone to come." I shake my head at Ecco laughing. "You're crazy, Ecco."
She hops in front of me smirking. "We could be bad, ya know? Sneak out. Just for a little." I narrow my eyes leaning in. "Keep talking."
~
Jeremiah POV:
Coming up the elevator into the late hours of the night to finally take rest next to my wife. "The tunnel is coming along nicely," Ecco says standing beside me. "Yes, there is much to do."
"Ecco, does my darling ever speak of life before this?" Ecco nods at me. "Mrs. Valeska always loves to spend time thinking of the good days." I hum reconnecting ways to make her happy. "I'll have to send her on a little trip out of our little Dark Zone."
I open the door to our room removing my tie and shirt and putting them away.
I walk over to my wife and rest my hands on her stomach holding my children. "We're not supposed to be here." I sigh resting my head against her. "I'm trying my best to get us out of here, loves."
She rolls to her side causing me to chuckle. I kiss her head cuddling into her in our sheets, dreaming of escaping Gotham with my family.
~
"Remember, love. Tonight is another graduation for the troops. It is still too dangerous. Care to take a trip to the Sirens today? I thought about sending you to have a full week of fun." Jeremiah asks as I cuddle into his side. "Yeah. I could use some girl time. If you're alright with having me away that long." Jeremiah holds my chin gazing into my eyes. "I love you so much, darling."
"I love you, Jeremiah." His smile warms my heart as he descends the elevator. "Behave yourself, loves."
~
I step out of the car smiling at the large buildings all so familiar. "Hello, Sirens." I grab the railing to step inside but am bumped by a force making me stumble.
"I - I'm so sorry, miss!" I look down at a little boy with bruises and scratches all over his body. I kneel gasping at his frame. "Oh, honey." He looks behind his shoulder gulping. "You have to help me, please."
I look up at the building thinking over my plans. Jeremiah told me to go here and only here, but it's not like he knew I was going to run into an abandoned child!
I nod at the small kid getting back in my car. "Come on, kid." He jumps in my car closing the door and gasping. "Thank you! Thank you so much, miss!" I smile sadly at the frightened little boy.
"Where are you going? Where can I take you?"
He looks at me with hopeful eyes. "The Haven."
I've heard whispers of the spot concealed in safety for a couple of weeks now. "I have an idea of where it is. I'll take you there."
He nods smiling, "My name is Will Thomas." He offers his hand.
"(Y/n) Valeska. It's good to meet you, Will." He smiles shaking my hand.
~
"Whoa." Will gasps as the large caged in the apartment corner appears. "Yeah," I say taking a look at all the people smiling. "Are you coming with me? I have to find someone who can help my brother and sister!" I nod turning off the car. "Yeah. I'm not sure who all lives here, but I can help you look around."
Walking in the small compound many of the people were friendly in this trying time.
I walk up holding Will's weak hand. "Excuse me, sir." He turns to me confused. "Yes?" "This boy needs your help." I try to usher him and scatter away but a hand reaches out grasping my wrist as I walk away from them.
I look up meeting my father's eyes through the shades. "(Y/n)?"
I smile removing the glasses. "Jim." he crumbles losing his balance. "Where have you been?" I shake my head tugging at my arm. "I-I can't be here."
I run away slipping out of the Haven untouched and back to my car as my father runs out screaming my name. I drive to the club again and entering as nothing happened.
"(Y/n)!" Babs screams running to me. "Oh, my! You've filled out!" I laugh pushing out my stomach. "Well, when you've got two fighting for space."
~
Jim POV:
That was her. My girl. My beautiful daughter walking right in and then scurried away faster than wildfire. "Jim, was that-" I turn to Harvey with a smile breaking my features. "Yeah. That was (Y/n)." Harvey pats my shoulder. "I know you're thinking you have to find her at this very second and trust me I do too, but we've got another pressing thing. Like this mystery kid." Harvey pulls me away from my thoughts.
"Right. What do we know?"
"His name is Will Thomas. Parents died in a home invasion a few weeks after the bridges came down. Guys that broke in took him to some sort of factory where he was held alongside dozens of other stolen kids, all chained together."
"God. Who are these guys?" "Call themselves The Soothsayers."
"You ever heard of them?" "No. But who can keep track these days?"
"Which district?" "Granton. Near the water, he said. Had them digging some sort of tunnel. Will broke free from his restraints last night and walked nine miles through the Dark Zone and found Mrs. Valeska in the Sirens block. She brought him here."
"What kind of tunnel?"
"Unclear."
"There's an abandoned waterworks by the old dock in Granton."
"Detective Gordon?" The small boy asks. "My friends. You'll save them, won't you?" I nod at him holding a smile. "I'll look into it."
"The Soothsayers won't be happy I escaped. They'll punish
the others for it. Please, Mr. Gordon. I promised them I'd bring help."
~
"Gosh, I can't wait until I can drink again." I laugh at Babara from behind the bar as she throws down a shot. "Oh, me and you both. Push those kids onto that pale freak and go wild!"
Feet away the crowd split and they still their ongoing conversations. None other than James Gordon walks over to Barbara. I duck under the bar hiding in plain sight.
"Barbara." She looks down at me before turning to ace my father. "Jim, what brings you crawling out into the open tonight? Come to join the party? One last hoorah before someone wastes you?" She smirks taking another shot before slamming it down.
"I'm here to ask a favor. Maybe some information if you have it."
"A favor plus info, right. Is this after you stood by and did nothing while my best friend on this Earth was stabbed through the heart?"
"I put him down."
"You restored his limp."
"HE SHOULD BE DEAD!"
Jim sighs, "Barbara." She cuts him off with her screams. "Everybody out! Now! I said move!"
As they file out and the music comes to a halt I shiver on my knees. Why am I doing this? Hiding from my blood.
"Planning revenge?" "Well, someone has to do something about that freak."
"He has an army. It would be suicide." "Look around, Jim. We're all slowly dying. Just some of us get to choose how."
"I'm sorry about what happened to Tabitha."
Babs brushes off the matter scoffing, "So, these favors?"
"I need transportation. Trucks, maybe."
"Where are you going?"
"It's a police matter," Jim says making me hold in a laugh. How could police exist nowadays?
"You know, they should really write that on your tombstone. They're downstairs in the basement lot. Knock yourself out. Drive right into this nightmare you created. You won't last a night."
He stays quiet for a moment before asking, "Have you seen (y/n)?" Barbara chuckles, "And if I did, what makes you think she wants to see her father who turned her own happiness away?" I peer over the bar watching my father's eyes drop and sadness fills his emotions. He turns away from the bar walking away. "Thank you for the trucks."
I pop up resting my elbows on the counter. "You didn't have to yell at him." Babs turns to me locking eyes. She breaks shaking her head with a sad smile. "No, I guess I didn't." I come around the bar sitting beside her. "You really think he won't last out there?" She turns to me smirking. "Not if he has some help. How long are you staying here?" I shrug, "Jeremiah doesn't need me around when the church graduates. He said the tension in the air is stressful for the babies." She scoffs laughing. "Right, because he's Mr. smartypants."
~
I sit on the couch watching TV as Babs strides through tossing my gun at me. "Load it and follow me." I stand following her. "Uh, why do I need a gun?" She turns back to me as walks into the garage.
"We're going to help Jimmy. You want to drive?"
I smile at her nodding. "Okay."
~
"Wait, slow down! I hear something." Barbara says causing me to stop the vehicle equipped with machine guns on the empty road. "I won't say it again, freak. Gordon comes with me."
I smile at her, "Jackpot!"
"I'll tell you what! I'll take his head, and you can have the rest of him!"
"NOW!" I scream as we whip around the corner and shoot down the punks. Barabra hops out fo the car walking towards my father.
"Hi, Jim. About our last chat... I may have been a little rash. This what got you all hot and bothered? They need a bath."
"Crazy bi-" I stand from my seat shooting the armed man aiming at Babs. As I hit the target, my father does as well.
He looks at me in shock. "(Y/n)?" I smile sitting back and cranking the car.
"Oh, lookie there. I found her. Not all square yet though. You're gonna help me do what we all know needs doing."
"Oh, yeah? What's that?"
"Kill Penguin."
~
I gaze and smile a all the happy citizens in the Haven. "This is amazing."
"Citizens are heading here in droves. This place will be full
by sundown." Jim nods looking around. "Then we'll find another."
I look up at him. "I figured you left when the evacuation was called." My father puts an arm across my shoulder pulling me to him. "You were still here. I was never going to leave without you. Especially now with these two." He says placing a hand on my stomach.
A woman walks up with her younger ones grinning at Jim. "I just want to thank you, Captain Gordon. My family, we've been drifting from one place to the next ever since the blackout. You've delivered us." She walks away beaming with joy, leaving my father with a raised head and confidence and honor beaming from him.
His moment soon ruined by Barbara scoffing, "Seriously?" She rolls her eyes looking at me. "You know he'll be angry with you if he finds you here. You're staying with me so my ass will be burned."
I look back at Babs and my father. He grabs my wrist looking me in the eyes. "You can't go back, (Y/n). Look at what he's done!" I close my eyes gathering my emotions. "Jim, please let me go so I can go home to my husband. This will end ugly if you refuse." He looks at me with shock and shakes his head. "No, I found you and now I'm going to keep the three of you safe from him." I rip my arm out of his grip. "I came to you! I understand you're upset, I do. But... Daddy's little girl is gone, I married him, he is the father of my children, and that won't change. You can either fight it and our contact will end, or..." I take out his pen from his pocket and grab his hand, writing my phone number. "You can accept me for the person I have become, and call me."
Jim nods sadly. He places his hand on mine. "I love you, (Y/n)." I nod smiling at my father. "I hope so." I back up walking next to Barbara.
"I'll see you around, killer. We have some unfinished business, you and I." She nods to him as we exit the gates.
~
"How was the day, darling? Have my twins kicked you anymore? I talked with them the other night." I giggle over the line laying on the big bed in the guest room of Barbara's home. "They've been fine, Jer. How was the first day of the graduates?" He sighs over the phone. "10 go in and only 4 complete the trial. It's quite disappointing." "I bet you'll have more tomorrow. It is a new day after all." "Indeed, love."
I snuggle in my covers rubbing my belly. "Get some rest, Jeremiah. I'll see you soon." He hums in the line. "I do hope so, darling. I love you." I smile feeling complete. "I love you too, Jeremiah."
As the call ends it suddenly rings again. I pick it up figuring it to be Jeremiah, once more. "Did you forget something?" I giggle over the line. "(Y/n)?" Jim's shaky voice comes through. "Dad."
He sighs and speaks, "Hi honey. H-How are you?"
At this time I talk to my father and open the door that has been shut so long.
"Hey! How about we meet up for lunch when we can?" I laugh at him, "You're going to act like everything's normal and grab a sub?" "Why not? I've got my family back."
A piercing giggle springs from the bathroom. Jerome walks out with sunglasses and posing in the mirror. "I'm going to tell."
I shake my head at him as my father talks. Jerome cackles and runs to the door making me chase after him tripping him. "OW! Workers comp!" He cries.
He stands up giggling. "Ole Jimmy. Always slithering around and shitting on our lives. Brother will be mad, (Y/n), you know that."
"Goodnight, Dad."
I hang up rolling on my side and cuddling into the sheets. "He won't find out, Jerome." He scoffs cuddling close to me. "Lying to your husband? You naughty girl."
I laugh into the pillow. "Goodnight, Jerome."

"If ATFO isn’t up by the end of the month, feel free to ask me for an already written scene from one-shot from that universe." is the offer still open?
Gotcha! Sorry this is late 😬
Here is young Jason's POV. It's from right after Year 4 so before Tim and right after Jason was formally adopted (still in training to be Robin)
Here's the first eight pages
-------
Year 4.5: The Vacation
Alright, so here’s the thing.
Jason is a city boy. He grew up in a city. It was Gotham so it was a shit city and the part that he lived in even shittier; but, it was, without question, a city. And one where he had lived the entire fourteen years of his somewhat depressing life. Jason was familiar with said city.
So, Jason is decidedly not familiar with the so-called “great” outdoors. Fuck, he’s pretty sure the closest he’s come to nature is fights with Poison Ivy.
All of which is just too fricking bad because Jason also happens to be the recently adopted brother of Dick Grayson, who has for some unimaginable reason decided camping is the best way to spend a vacation.
And Jason is coming along.
Why? Because apparently Dick’s first thought had been this was a great time for brotherly bonding. Okay, actually his first was that it was perfect for Jason’s birthday but Jason had flat out refused and Dick moved it to the week after.
So, now, the newly fourteen year old is watching as Dick somehow crams a tent, sleeping bags, and camping gear into one of the Wayne’s very fancy and very compact sports cars.
Jason looks back wistfully to the manor door.
It’s probably not too late to back out.
But, as lame as it most definitely sounds, this camping trip actually seems really important to Dick. Like important enough to give Donna his Titans duties for a few days and ask Roy to be back up for Barbara in Gotham if she needed it. Plus, more terrifying, getting Barbara to agree to that.
And, as much as he refused to say it aloud, Jason could privately admit that Dick Grayson may have a very large part in why his recently somewhat depressing life is a now a lot less depressing.
Whatever. So, Jason might not actually think it’s too terrible to spend a few days with his older brother. Even with the camping.
That still doesn’t explain the other part.
“Why can’t we bring our uniforms again,” Jason complains, crossing his arms.
Dick doesn’t stop in his work to get the trunk shut. “Because that would mean we’re working and I’ve been informed by both Raquel and Zatanna that working vacations don’t actually count as vacations.” The trunk pops back open and Dick’s head disappears inside. “Besides, we won’t need them where we’re going.”
“Yeah, cause that doesn’t sound ominous,” Jason mutters under his breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing!”
Dick emerges and the trunk finally closes with only a slight creak of protest. “Ha, there! What did I tell you? Circus performers always know the best packing tips.”
Jason is reluctantly somewhat impressed.
“Come on, get in! We’ve gotta get to the grounds while there’s still light to set up the tent.”
Jason slumps into the passenger seat. “Are you sure this isn’t like you stealthily training me in advanced wilderness survival or something?”
“It’s a vacation, Jason,” Dick insists, starting the car and backing down the drive way. “Believe me, if it was training, I’d pick a lot trickier place than twenty minutes out of Gotham city limits.”
Crap, if it was training, Jason would at least know it sucked for a reason. Doing it for fun makes it even worse.
“You know you’re an heir to like billions of dollars, right?”
“We’re the heirs,” Dick corrects because of course, he does.
Jason rolls his eyes. “I’m just saying if you wanted nature, we could go to like the Bahamas or the Galapagos or even just buy an island if that’s what you really wanted.”
“We don’t need an island.”
“Sure, we do. We could even use it as a secret prison for supervillains when we’re done. It would be great!”
Dick’s grinning, checking briefly before pulling into Gotham traffic. “Secret island prison bases definitely fall a bit too far into the supervillian category, Jay. They'll sue us for trademark infringement.”
“Still beats camping.”
“Camping’s fun!” Dick laughs. “Trust me. Millions of people do it every year. They can’t all be wrong.”
Per usual, Jason is far less trusting of the populace’s intelligence than Dick is.
As if to spite his skepticism, the hour or so drive out to the woods doesn’t go so bad. Jason commandeers the radio so they’re listening to a good classic rock station instead of being subjected to the weird mix of folk songs and pop music that Dick likes. The dark buildings and usual smog of Gotham starts to fade out around the forty minute mark, somewhere between one of Dick’s Titans stories and Jason complaining about a plot thread in the last book he read.
The drive is nice. Peaceful, even.
You know like most horror movies start.
“We’re here!”
Jason eyes the stretch of trees for any kind of sign or even a distinguishing feature. There’s nothing.
“Dick, this is definitely not a campsite.”
“It’s a few miles off,” Dick explains, dropping a bag in Jason’s arms. “I wanted to avoid the usual campgrounds in case the tabloid reporters found us. Don’t worry, I checked with the owner. No one’s used this stretch in years.”
Jason thinks there’s probably a reason for that since there’s not one hint of a trail in sight.
“Where are we even going to set up a tent?”
“Not sure,” Dick says way too cheerfully. “Finding a spot’s part of the fun!”
Jason gives him a look.
Dick rolls his eyes. “Relax, Jay. The owner told me there’s a stream about half a mile in. We’ll set up camp there.”
Jason still gives a token grumble just because.
By the time night rolls around, they do manage to find a camping spot, set up the tent, and Dick even starts up a small fire right in the middle of the campsite.
If pushed, Jason would admit the entire thing is a bit picturesque.
He bites down on his hot dog as Dick digs through the rest of their stuff.
“Oh! I almost forgot to tell you!” Dick pulls something out of the bag. “Look, I brought stuff to make s'mores!”
“Cool, hand them over” Jason grabs for the bag of marshmallows only for Dick to pull them away.
“Not yet, they’re for our last day. Gotta ration out the food.”
Jason rolls his eyes. “You’re ridiculous. Why not bring enough for every night?”
“Cause then it’s less special,” Dick answers sagely. “Think about it like a prize for surviving camping.”
Because Jason is the generous sort, he doesn’t even make a crack about “surviving”.
“So, okay, let’s say I buy that camping is a vacation,” he says instead between bites.
“It is a vacation.”
“Yeah, fine, sure. Real question though, why are we taking a vacation?” He waves a hand. “What ever happened to ‘crime never sleeps’ and everything?”
“I’ve never said that!”
“You said it to Babs last week!”
“That was so she’d help me run the Poison Ivy samples! That doesn’t count! She didn’t even believe me!”
“Definitely counts!”
Dick rolls his eyes. “You know most kids don’t need a reason to go on vacation before school starts.”
“So, that’s what this is,” Jason accuses. “This is for you! You wanted a vacation before college!”
Dick turns his face down to poke at the fire. “I’m not going to college...not this year anyway.”
Jason frowns. “I thought you got accepted to Gotham U. Shit, I know you did. Alfred still has the letter hanging on the fridge.”
Dick shrugs. “I’m going to turn it down. There’s too much going on right now. Gotham. The Titans. I’ve gotta start sitting in at the Wayne Enterprise meetings soon, too. I don’t have time for classes.”
“Pretty sure, the classes would help with the Wayne Enterprise crap,” Jason says. “And you know Roy and Donna can help with the Titans and Babs and I can cover more in Gotham if--”
“Jay, it’s fine,” Dick cuts him off. “I need to choose what to focus on and it just can’t be college right now. It’s okay.”
Jason wants to argue more but then Dick’s continuing
“And, hey, I know camping’s not exactly your thing; but, I’m glad you decided to come anyway.” Dick gives him a blinding grin. “You deserve to do some normal summer stuff after all the Robin training. And I’m glad I get to spend some time with my favorite little brother.
Jason glares, ignoring the way his cheeks have gone warm. “Shut up, I’m your only brother. And you know I hate it when you say stuff like that.”
“No, you don’t,” Dick says, shit eating grin in place.
Jason flings the bag of hot dog buns at him.
He catches it, still grinning. The asshole.
-----
Something that’s always jarring but becomes really fucking obvious once he thinks about it is the fact that Dick gets nightmares.
Of course, he does. How could he not? Jason’s doesn’t know why he never expects it.
It’s not even loud nightmares with like screaming and flailing arms and shit. It’s just these short, sharp little gasps as his body goes entirely too stiff and face twists in pain. Sometimes, Jason thinks that’s worse than screaming.
Jason shifts in his sleeping bag, turning to face the top of the tent. He briefly contemplates waking Dick up; but, he knows from experience, it won’t help much. Better to let him get some rest until the nightmare goes away on its own.
Only problem is that Jason still can’t fall asleep. It’s kind of funny. He’s never really thought of himself as a picky sleeper before. Fuck knows he’s slept on way too many of Gotham’s mold infested roofs back when his dad was on parole. But, there’s something about the cold feeling of hard dirt that he swears he can feel even under the layers of sleeping bag and tent.
Camping sucks.
Screw it. Jason’s not just going to lay here all night. Least he can do is get up and explore around the campsite so he can have a better idea of whatever “fun” activities he’s sure Dick has planned for tomorrow.
He slips out of the tent without waking up Dick--which actually does serve as a fairly good challenge for his new Robin training--and heads into the woods, careful to keep note of how far away he goes from camp. He feels ridiculously like he should have bread crumbs or some other kind of fairy tale stuff to track his way through the forest.
He swears if he survived living in Crime Alley, Black Mask, and a freaking explosion just to get lost and die in the woods, he’s going to haunt Dick forever. Jason the Unfriendly Ghost.
He gets to the stream that he and Dick found earlier so at least he’s not that lost.
SNAP!
Jason’s head whips around in the direction of the noise.
Nothing.
He lets out a long breath. Dumb, of course, it’s nothing. It’s the forest. Forests make weird noises. It’s reason #357 why they’re terrible.
SNAP!
Okay...that definitely sounded like something big….but, maybe it’s something normal like a tree branch snapping or--
Snap!...Snap!...Snap!
That’s footsteps.
Jason moves back into the tree line, crouching down until he’s covered in the darkness of the bushes. His hands run over the ground, trying to find anything even remotely useful other than a slightly pointy stick.
Snap!...Snap!
Shit, he really is going to die here, isn’t he? In this stupid forest before he even gets to go out as Robin. Of all the dumb fucking--
Snap!...snap!...snap...snap.
The footsteps are getting further away. Echoing deeper and deeper into the forest on the other side of the stream.
snap...snap...snap…
Jason listens, in slight amazement, as the sounds slowly fade off into the distance until they finally disappear. Slowly, Jason counts in his mind to sixty, then a hundred and twenty, then two hundred.
On three hundred, he bolts--tearing through the forest in the direction of the camp until he finally catches sight of the obnoxiously bright yellow of the tent Dick bought, shining in front of him like a heavenly beacon.
He tears through the opening, breathing heavily, just a half a second before there’s an arm jammed hard against his neck.
“Jay?”
The pressure disappears and then Dick’s looking down at him with wide eyes and a slight blush. “Sorry about that. Was surprised. What’s wrong?”
Jason’s heart rate’s finally slowing down. And here in the safety of the tent, in the face of Dick’s patented concerned face, admitting to getting freaked out by noises in the woods seems beyond stupid.
“Nothing,” he mutters. “Just thought I heard something?”
“Heard something?”
“Yeah, like footsteps.”
Dick frowns. “We’re on private camp land. There shouldn’t be anyone around here. You sure?”
Jason shakes his head, face feeling hot, as he sits back down on his sleeping bag. “No. Don’t worry about it. Like I said, it was probably nothing. Maybe it’s just a mountain lion that’s gonna eat us in our sleep.”
Dick pats his shoulder. “Mountain lions don’t really live in this region, Jay.”
Jason rolls his eyes before turning over pointedly to try to get some more sleep.
“It’s bears you need to worry about.”

Hey I saw you giving someone else advice about reading batfam, I was hoping you could give me some too? I'm new to reading comics, always too put off by the way they treat women, but I really love the batfam, I wanna get to know them better. I've been trying to read but I have a lot of processing issues that make comics difficult for me to read. In general new stuff is easier, the fonts and are way clearer nowadays, any recs that accomodate me and my need for crispy text?
Hey hey hey!! Happy to be of service - I didn’t think I had a lot of recommendation opinions on comic books but yesterday was a whirlwind, so always glad to share my opinion. Even more so if it helps someone :)
I agree with you on that, older comics have such a weird, bunched text. Especially when reading on a laptop or tablet like I do with older comics (which is why I hope, even though the shows are gone, they keep DC Universe; where else can I read old comics). And I also agree with you on the treatment of women in comics, it’s a-not-nice for lack of better words. Actually that was one of the main reasons I’ve stayed away from the Boys on Amazon... but I read a review where it’s mentioned that actual women had input on the show, so it’s differed greatly in regards to the comic (which means I might actually enjoy it). But this is about comics - so let me stay on track lol.
I mentioned a lot of good women-centric Batfam stuff in the other rec that you might enjoy: Batwoman, Batgirl & the Birds of Prey, Batgirl (the New 52 Gail Simone & Babs Starr runs; Rebirth - only until the costume change, if you choose to continue after, your call), Stephanie Brown’s Batgirl, Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl, Detective Comics when it’s about the team Batman puts together (during the 1st year or so of Rebirth) the Harley Quinn series for both New 52 and Rebirth...
I’ve just started reading the original Birds of Prey series on DC Universe, and while it’s somewhat dated at times (like really a few things are cringeworthy, and I’ve only read through the first four one-shots that led up to the series) it’s nice seeing how Barbara and Dinah became friends. Plus Barbara Gordon in a wheelchair, kicking ass, hacking shit, and taking names!
But saying that ALSO reminds me of this fantastic issue of a ‘The Brave and the Bold’ run with Wonder Woman, Zatanna, and Barbara Gordon. Ugh probably my top issue from that volume.
For the Batboys... the ones I highly recommend are the Nightwing Rebirth title (until it kind of soft reboots, don’t wanna spoil it but you’ll probably know when to leave after meeting Ric Grayson), the pre-Flashpoint Red Robin series was good, the new 52 Robin series was a great portrayal of Damian, Red Hood & the Outlaws is good (although, like I said, earlier Kori characterization is not best but things take off when they get to space)... Also definitely check out the Grayson title, one of the main settings is at a school for girls that doubles as an assassin academy, and there’s one issue that switches POV between Grayson and a few of the students and that’s always a laugh.
Finally, not Batfamily related per se, but the DC Bombshells series did a fantastic job, I think, or portraying superheroines. It’s a story based on these collectible busts that were popular, asking - what if there were super heroes during WWII? And what if they were only women? I could NOT put it down (figuratively, I read them all on my laptop). The writer for this comic went on to write Batwoman, so if you read Batwoman and like it you’ll be interested in DC Bombshells.

Keita, Izumi, Haruka, and Tadakatsu!
Thank you, P! I’ll do Keita first and then put the rest in a Read More, since these posts got a bit longer than I expected. And since I love all four of these babs, I’m sure it won’t be any shorter.
Keita Iijima
How I feel about this character
Considering he’s my url... I think he’s a good lil bean.  We don’t really know THAT much about him in canon, other than the fact he likes coke (the drink), he’s a coward and he actually has enough trust in Shinji and Yutaka to reach out to them during the Program, even continuing to approach them when Shinji has a gun and Keita doesn’t have a way of defending himself. Because even though he’s a coward, he had to take a chance on the people he considers to be his friends, to accept him and invite him along. He was scared and desperate and he just didn’t want to be alone anymore. Well, we all know how that ended, ey. A LOT of my Keita feels are pure crack and I HC him as an annoying dumbass who makes lots of mistakes but ultimately never has bad intentions. But I also have these real Keita feels about how he died feeling lonely and rejected and confused, turned away by the people he thought he could trust and who he didn’t know didn’t trust him in return.
Short summary: I love Keita.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Keita/Shinji
I won’t be taking any questions at this time... Ok, look, Shinji/Keita has always been a bit of a crack ship for me. Mostly based on the fact that I HC Keita as being a big Shinji fanboy who just follows him around and is totally oblivious to the fact that Shinji is not that into it. I think he, someone obviously not that cool (no offence, Keita), would admire Shinji’s coolness and confidence and all his abilities in sports and tech etc. Shinji on the other hand, especially after what happened that day they went to the movies + comic book store, would just constantly will Keita to go away. I think Shinji’s bitterness and grudge about what happened is also so out of proportion, he even tells himself he knows Keita is a coward and shouldn’t expect his help, but he still gets all cold and pushes him away after. You totally know he would ghost his ass compeltely if they didn’t have mutual friends. And Keita is just in his own little “Lala Shinji is awesome”-world and doesn’t even notice. There’s something about how I HC their dynamic and a one-sided crush from Keita that I just love.
Keita/Yuka
This one is purely fan-based due to the dynamic they developed in an old RP, but which I could see working in canon as well, thanks to both of them (at least how I see Keita) are pretty upbeat and positive and kinda dumbasses. I can’t see them get super serious but I think they could be tons of fun and get up to some weird and annoying pranks.
Keita/Yumiko Back in 2004, when I was 12, I read BR for the first time and I drew my own little manga centered around Keita in the Program. In my cartoon, Yumiko was his ex, and he was looking for her. I don’t know why. I don’t know how. I stand by it. That’s all.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Keita/Yutaka The little nerds of the Neutral Boys group. I think they both joke around a lot and don’t get serious until things are really fucking serious. In the novel, Yutaka was shocked that Shinji didn’t trust Keita and refused to let him join them, and after Shinji kills Keita, it’s when Yutaka starts to question everything about Shinji’s motivations with him too. Not knowing the history with Shinji/Keita, Yutaka himself had obviously considered Keita someone trustworthy, and a good friend. And where as in the novel, Yutaka kinda questions why someone as cool as Shinji would hang out with him, you know he would never have to question this with Keita... Who isn’t cool at all, lets be real.
·         My unpopular opinion about this character
I’ve seen a lot of people villainising Keita and I just don’t get it. Not necessarily disagreeing with whether or not Shinji was right to shoot him, because I can see where in a matter of life and death, Shinji would have just not be able to risk it (not only his life, but Yutaka’s too). But in the end, Shinji even knows he made a mistake when they find no other weapon on Keita, so I think it’s weird when the fanbase paint Keita as this asshole. Yeah Keita was wrong not to get help for Shinji and he was possibly even more wrong for lying about it after, but you know what… He’s a coward. He chooses the easy way out, that lazy bastard. Good for him. I still think if Shinji was that bothered by the whole situation, then he should have talked to him about it instead of pretending everything was fine only to shoot him straight in the heart.
So I guess my unpopular opinion is… I know Keita is a dumb coward but I love him anyway and Shinji could have handled it better too.
·         One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Again, not dying would be great. I would love it if Shinji had heard him out and actually let him prove that he didn’t have any other weapon. Though I’m sure if Shinji had let him join them, Keita would have found some great way to fuck up the plan later anyway, bless.
. Izumi Kanai
How I feel about this character
My other baby. Izumi has zero lines and all we know about her is told to us by others, and to be honest, it was Yutaka who first made me fall in love with her, with his depiction of what “made her so great,” as Shinji asked. I love that she’s rich and from a good family but still not stuck up. I love that she easily cries when fucking up, like at the relay, because same. I love how she laughs until she cries when listening to Yuka’s jokes, showing she has a great sense of humour and isn’t afraid of showing her own emotions in public (whether it’s laughing or crying). Finally,  although I had been a fan of Izumi for 10 + years by the time Angel’s Border was released, she really dug her nails deeper into my heart by being one of the two girls who went to Chisato’s brother’s funeral. It says even more about her considering Chisato’s brother was suspected of taking part in a rebel group and this is why he killed himself, while Izumi’s father is the town official and would probably definitely disapprove of her support of that. So she’s clearly also a caring and supportive friend.
I guess I kinda like the mystery of us never seeing anything from her POV, where we have to put together the pieces of information from the others. It also leaves for a lot of blanks to be filled by headcanons and personal interpretations. Which I love.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Izumi/Mitsuru
Who doesn’t love a bad boy/good girl? I know I do. Mitsuru finding Izumi’s body and being so startled by It (in the Norwegian translation he kinda stutteres “S-She, Kanai…”, and it’s adorable), as he notes to himself how she was kind of cute but he would never be stupid enough to develop a crush on her, considering their different backgrounds… Aah. To me it always sounded like he already HAD been “stupid enough” to develop a crush on her. And considering Izumi, despite being rich, is also described as being down to earth, I don’t think she would find it stupid at all. We know Mitsuru is also described by Yumiko as not being that bad of a guy and always being kind to girls, so I just picture him holding doors open and helping girls carry things around if needed, like a gentleman. How could Izumi not fall for that? The bad boy with a heart of gold is just irresistible.
Izumi/Toshinori
Another pairing that’s developed in the fandom and is probably more of an in-joke, but they are the two rich kids in the class ( don’t count Kiriyama as a person, sorry), and whilst Toshinori is super judgemental and dismissive of all his “vulgar classmates”, I really like the idea of Izumi’s class and family being factors in how he can’t judge her the same way, but then her kindness also touches something in his cold heart, opening up the possibility that he could love something other than his violin and salt… And it would literally be like The Princess and the Frog. That’s just too good.
Izumi/Yutaka
I think there was a point in my life where I actually shipped this harder than Izumi/Mitsuru, so I still want to pay my respects to it. Like mentioned, Yutaka’s speech about Izumi is what made me first fall in love  with her too. He is so committed to her, her death is what leaves him with no doubt that he wants to give his all and fight against Sakimochi and the government, despite the very high probability that he would die in the process. The way he talks about her is so touching, and like Shinji said, he could probably be a poet rather than a comedian. Again, quoting Shinji, I think Izumi would really appreciate knowing someone cared for her as much as Yutaka did. He’s so sweet and they’d definitely be super cute together
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Izumi/Yukie+Chisato+Yuka
I could probably have just said Izumi and the Neutral girls, but these are the three I consider she would be the closest to.I kinda HC Izumi/Yukie as having a similar background, where as Yukie isn’t mentioned as being rich in the same way, her father still works for the government. Yukie clearly presses back against what her father/the government are doing, and I think down-to-earth Izumi would have similar problems with it. I think these two + Chisato are the girliest ones of the group and would enjoy shopping trips and late night sleepovers, where they gossip all night (Yuka can join for this, you know that girl loves the tea!!) Chisato is also the one girl who mentions Izumi’s death (thanks girl, you’re a real G), and the whole thing about Izumi going to her brother’s funeral to support her, that I’ve already talked about. As for Yuka, she clearly knows how to make Izumi laugh, and that’s one of the most important parts of a friendship. I think they could be very silly and cute together.  I also think  (I base this a little bit on the manga and some of the lines there), that these four girls are the most “boy-crazy”  and could bond together over rating boy’s butts.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I know she has zero lines and she’s still my favourite female character. So…  That in itself is probably “unpopular” in the sense that it’s not exactly embraced by the fandom.
I guess I don’t like when Izumi is portrayed in some fanfics as being very snooty, despite one of the five things or so we know about her is that she’s NOT stuck up
.I also don’t like the movie having her as a “bad girl” or the manga totally dismissing her and having damn Fumiyo be Yutaka’s crush instead. The other mediums did her dirty.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I think every AU I have In my head, involves Mitsuru finding Izumi alive and teaming up with her, giving them a chance to really get to know each other and you know… Fall more in love and express their feelings. And survive idk that’d be good too
.And any mention by the neutral girls in the novel that “Our friend Izumi died first, that’s sad, huh”, would have been welcome. Thanks Chisato for doing a little justice in AB.
I’m also still hopeful for like a BR prequel novel or manga focusing on all the different groups that could give Izumi some lines. I know it’s been 21 years since the novel was released, but AB was released 14 years later, so there’s still hope.
Haruka Tanizawa
How I feel about this character
Haruka has always been one of my favourite characters (in BR I love so many of the kids, so “favourite” means top 15). Her bravery and loyalty is really admirable and she really is part of keeping the team together in the Lighthouse. Despite being a little tough and clearly a little dis-trusting of boys, Haruka is still kind and caring, as she checks on Yuko in the lighthouse and tries to reassure her about the whole Shuya situation. She’s clearly a great friend who will always stick up for those she’s close to. AB adds another dimension to her character with her realizing recently she’s a lesbian and in love with her best friend which is just… Ouch. My heart.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Haruka/Yukie I mentioned in my Yukie-post that I have a hard time seeing Yukie as bi/gay, but I still heavily ship this. I guess I just want Haruka to be happy, right? Even before AB was released, I always read Haruka as a lesbian in love with Yukie, which I know a lot of the fandom did.  Falling in love with your best friend is such a lesbian stereotype in media, but I’m here for it every time. The fact that Haruka really finds herself disgusting because of how she feels about Yukie now, is just heartbreaking. She mentions trying to pull away and avoid physical touches etc, but it’s clearly hard for her to pull away at all, as the girls have been best friends since Elementary school. In AB, Haruka also mentions how she could never live if it means Yukie has to be the one to die. Her love for Yukie, both romantically and platonically, Is just so strong.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Haruka/Yukie See everything I wrote about them already except remove the romantic elements, I guess? They make a great team, both on the volleyball court and off. Even their platonic love for each other (Yukie’s love for Haruka, I guess) is so strong and they find strength in each other, going back to the school together to gather their friends, despite the risks. They’re both very brave and even braver together. Strength in numbers and all that.
Haruka/Chisato I just imagine them looking so cute together when they’re cooking, described as looking as a couple because of Haru being so tall with short hair and Chisato being so short with long hair. Because of how much physically bigger and probably stronger Haruka is than her, I totally see her as overprotective of her smaller friend. I can see her just listening to Chisato go on about her crush on Shinji and be horrified that their innocent friend would risk getting hurt by a player like this. I guess I in general picture Haruka as protective of all her friends.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I’m not sure if this is unpopular but I don’t see it mentioned that much, but I HC Haruka as having experienced some sort of assault/abuse by a boy/man in the past. Possibly because of the manga stating that Haruka “knows boys do bad things”.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I obviously (this is gonna come as a shock I KNOW) wish she and Yukie would have succeeded in calming down Satomi and Chisato before the whole thing escalated like it did. I’d be so happy if the girls made it out of the lighthouse with Shuya to meet up with Noriko and Shogo, even if the happiness probably wouldn’t laugh.
And I’d like for her to have told Yukie just how she feels about her. I know Yukie would have been completely supportive and loved her no matter what, and I wish Haruka got that confirmation that she’s not abnormal or disgusting, and that it doesn’t change anything in their friendship.
Tadakatsu Hatagami
How I feel about this character
I love suspicious, grumpy, level-headed (until he gets horny) Katsu. He’s another one of my favourites. I like how he has friends from so many different group, like he’s a jock so he hangs out with Niida and Oki, but he’s also childhood friends with Yuka, and he’s still friends with his Elementary school friend, little nerd Yuichiro…  It means he must be pretty versatile to get along with such different groups of people. And I find it a little hilarious how he let his strict mom keep him from being friends with Shuya after he started playing rock music. What a loser.
I find it really sweet how Katsu and Yuichiro sat down and decided to find other people and try to find a plan on how to escape once they met up in the Program (but failed to find any plan because they’re both just not that creative I guess??), but it’s admirable that despite being a suspicious person (“misanthropic” as Yuichiro described him), he still wanted to trust people enough so that they could help each other out of the situation. He seems all grumpy and hard when Mitsuko joins them but that’s because he doesn’t trust her (wonder why) but he’s still a nice guy with good intentions and a protective friend!
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Tadakatsu/Yuka Yes, I jumped on this bandwagon immediately after reading AB. Yuka referring to him with his nickname “Katsu” and being in tears because the girls just let him run off alone, since they decided not to let any boys join their group… Seeing Yuka, happy-go-lucky, positive, jokster Yuka, cry like that because she had to let her neighbour/childhood friend go off alone, is just heartbreaking. And then knowing she had to hear about his death later… I wish we had gotten more of her reaction to that. Since I see Tadakatsu as pretty serious and kinda a grump, it makes this pairing even more appealing to me, as they’re so different.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Tadakatsu/Yuichiro Again, this is another case of the “opposites attract”, with Tadakatsu being a grumpy jock, and Yuichiro being a naïve, good-hearted otaku. Where Tadakatsu is suspicious and judgemental, Yuichiro is open-minded and wants to see the good in everyone, even someone with a bad reputation like Mitsuko. What makes me really like their friendship is that even though one might think Tadakatsu would be the domineering one, he actually lets Yuichiro call a lot of the shots, like letting Mitsuko join them in the first place, convincing Tadakatsu Mitsuko must trust them, and then also going along with it when Yuichiro freed her hands from the restraints later. Yuichiro clearly helps him keep calm in the stressful situation, and they have such trust in each other. It makes Yuichiro’s death by his hand so tragic, too.
My unpopular opinion about this character
He should have shot that bitch when he had the chance.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
He should have shot that bitch when he had the chance.
Honestly, he did so well, he had a healthy amount of suspicion, he was RIGHT to be suspicious... And then Mitsuko lifts her skirt up a little and he’s like “Oh, yeah, actually, let me just drop my gun and go get laid! Wohoo!”. I’m so annoyed with him! Dumbass! I get he’s a horny teenage boy but did his brain just completly turn off when the rest of him got turned on?! So yeah, I wish. 1) He would have shot Mitsuko right away. 2) If not, at least don’t let her SEDUCE YOU. 3) When given the chance to shoot her again, I wish he had succeeded, instead of Yuichiro being the sweetheart he is and taking the bullet. Oh and I guess I would have liked to see him re-unite with Yuka, or at least see her outside the school or... Something.

Could we please have the Male!ROs POV for the reaction of MC asking them if they want to marry them? ; w ; i'msoft Bookie is such a sweet babs
(You guys are getting so dangerously close to this one truth that I’m just gonna come out and say it)
Brooklyn: His mind didn’t register the question at first. But when it did, he almost couldn’t believe his ears.
Him? You want to marry him?
Of course he’s happy. Of course he wants to marry you. His heart skips a beat when you nod, confirming that yes, he’s the one you want to spend the rest of your life with.
But he’s been engaged before and yet he’s never married and that surely was his fault. And he... he doesn’t want to mess this up. Not again. Not with you.
He feels tears prick his eyes as he kisses you. Please, god, don’t let me mess this up.
“I love you, too,” he whispers. Because he really does.
Teddy: Why? Why him? Why would you want to marry him, of all people?
He’s a wreck, in every sense. You deserve someone more put-together. You could choose someone better than him in a million ways.
But his hesitation wavers when you flutter kisses on his fingers.
“...Be my husband.”
Would it be so bad?
His heart is choking him. He feels heat creeping up his neck and has to turn his eyes away. He knows if he says yes, he’s really going to try to treat you right. His only fear is that trying his best still won’t be enough.
But he... how can he say no?
Shit, he really can’t deal with this mushy, lovey-dovey crap.
“Ugh... damnit.”
Seven: He doesn’t know the appeal of marriage. Back then, it was just a word he rarely hear and whose meaning he only vaguely got.
He tried to dismiss the idea at first because why should he care? He doesn’t need a little word to prove that he loves you. He’s already decided he’s going to be with you as long as you want him.
But you seem insistent. So he asks, “This is important to you?”
And it is, so...
Of course, he has to concede. Since he already decided he wants you in his life until the end, right? So, he can do this one thing for you.
He kisses your forehead. “I guess I’ll marry you. I love you, too.”

So, since I’ve been here, they’ve finally begun to trust me enough that they will let Alfred leave the house. He’s been my constant babysitter, I suspect never more than ten feet away, even at my most intimate moments.
(A suspicion confirmed when I wondered aloud about Squatty Potties one morning, only to find one nestled beneath my toilet the next day. I choose to believe this is due to in-person, non-visual lurking and not a 24/7 live feed of my grunting face. Somehow, that seems more comforting. Anyways, back to the story.)
Of course, I’m not at the manor alone. Hey, baby steps. Bruce is working on something or other, above ground, in the study. I’m allowed to wander the house, but they still take extra precautions to prevent me from seeing the Batcave.
At some point mid-morning (vague estimates like this are part of the reason they don’t give me more responsibilities, I’m sure) the doorbell rang. Which is a little unusual. Usually if someone we don’t know visits, they use the intercom at the gate, and don’t make it past to the doorbell. If it is someone we know, they usually walk right in. I figured maybe someone needed help carrying something in.
Naïve.
I open the door and immediately start having a terrible flashback by proxy for Babs. Joker’s standing there (sans Hawaiian shirt, even though I can picture it so clearly) pointing a gun in my face (I can imagine the camera, but in this case the gun stands out a little more starkly). My heartrate skyrocketed and I lost track of my breathing. I’m pretty sure I instantly broke out in a sweat. Or at least I remember my hair being damp later.
My first impulse was to close the door, but I knew that wouldn’t work. There’s a story that goes with this too, but for the sake of plot flow, I think I’m going to just start adding appendices on this thing.
So. See Appendix A.
After an eternity, maybe just a couple of seconds, Joker rasped (See Appendix B) out, “Well, aren’t you going to ask me in?”
Lacking the ability to think of any better options, I opened the door the rest of the way. “Won’t you?”
“Why thank you.” He stepped over the threshold. He seemed alone. I couldn’t see anyone else, but I also couldn’t see a car out front. “I was expecting that prim British butler, but your manners are at least passing.” He spun around as I closed the door behind us, the gun waggling with a nonchalant threat. “May I ask after the master of the house?”
I swallowed hard. “Yeah, Bruce is right down here,” I half gestured in the direction of the study.
“Bruce!” he skipped over to my side, threw the gun from one hand to the other, elbowing me jokingly (but in the direction I gestured), “You’re certainly not that butler!” His voice dropped an octave to mock, “’Master Wayne this, Master Wayne that.’”
We started walking, and the silence hung too heavy on the air. I figured if I could at least keep him talking, Bruce might hear from around the corner and be able to react. “He’s not in today.”
Quick as a whip, the Joker quipped, “At the hairdresser’s then?” (See Appendix C)
And wouldn’t I be damned but I just about laughed out loud. As it was, a panicky smirk struggled on my face just long enough for him to see.
“Think that’s funny do you?” He threw the gun back into the hand closest to me and smacked the muzzle threateningly on my shoulder in cadence as he said, “They don’t call me the Joker for my impeccable sense of style.”
My eyes bobbed with the gun. Understanding his implication, I coughed out a weak chuckle, distinctly unlike the genuine laugh I had fought back a moment ago. He frowned.
We turned a corner. The study was just a few doors down this hallway. The doors were open. If I could get the Joker to talk loud enough, maybe-
“He’s in there, is he?” Joker dropped his voice to a whisper. Damn. “Well, once we’re there, you’ll be a good little maidservant and get his attention for me, won’t you?” The gun lifted from over my shoulder to touching my chin.
I just nodded.
We turned the corner into the open room. Bruce hadn’t heard us approach, hadn’t even heard the doorbell ring. Appendix D. He remained at the desk, shuffling through and examining a disarray of papers.
Joker stepped to be behind me. Yay human shield. He jabbed the gun into my back. Not too forceful, just a reminder. As if I’d forgotten.
I cleared my throat. Nothing. “Um, Bruce?” I heard my voice betray my fear with a squeak. Still nothing.
Now Joker jabbed the gun forcefully into my side. I jumped a little, raised my voice, “Bruce!”
Still. Nothing. Joker grabbed my shoulder, dug the gun into my side, and glared at me impatiently. I looked back with fear and confusion and apparently a little bit of “watch this” judging by the smile he gave me.
I inhaled deeply then let out a cry like a caribou calling for a mate, half leaning out of the Joker’s grasp.
“BUH-ROOOOOOOooooooooOOOOOOOOSE!” Joker grabbed a knot of my hair firmly, yanking me upright as I finished shouting.
Bruce’s head jerked up from the table. (Appendix E.) His mouth set in a grim line.
Joker hissed in my ear, “Announce me.”
I tried to clear my throat, but all that came out was a weak little whimper, “Joker’s here to see you.”
The Joker let go and as I fell to the side, he simultaneously pistol-whipped me and said, “The Brit would have done it with more pomp.”
I hit the other side of my head on an end table on my way down and blacked out by the time I hit the floor.
----------
Appendix A: Jason’s Wild Ride
A couple of weeks ago, Jason got bombed off his ass. He entirely forgot that he had already announced his resurrection to Bruce and everybody, and in his inebriated state decided to do a shortcut version. In full Red Hood garb (the old one from storage with the musty blue jacket), he got on his motorcycle and just. Crashed. Through. The Front Door. Screaming “I’m back bitches!”. After fumbling for and dropping his gun a couple of times, Tim managed to peacefully disarm him. It went like this:
Tim: Uh, Jason?
Jason: Oh, hi Replacement!
Tim: Would you mind handing over your guns?
Jason: Y’know, I’m too sloshed to have these anyways. Take them.
When Jason woke up late the next evening, Bruce was LIVID. He all but dragged him down to the cave by his ear and made Jason go through firearms training again from Step One: don’t handle when drunk. Hungover is apparently okay.
I tried to ask Tim what got Jason so uncharacteristically blackout drunk in the first place. It wasn’t around any important dates I could remember. Tim just shrugged. He was either ignoring me, or didn’t know, or knew but didn’t trust me enough to tell me.
So! Not only did I 1- learn the original door was not reinforced in any way but also 2- witnessed the installation of a similarly “plain” wooden door in its place.

Appendix B: Rasped? Growled? Politely Queried?
What is up with that voice? It’s so haunting and familiarly unfamiliar. It’s halfway between “jovial pre-teen boy who’s voice is just beginning to crack” and “cynical 76 year old grandmother who’s been smoking since she developed the fine motor control necessary”. And yet neither. It’s something you can’t describe, can’t imagine, and then, once heard, want to forget.

Appendix C: Get it?
Because he’s bald?
I thought it was f*ckin hilarious.

Appendix D: WTF
Like seriously. What the ever-loving son of milk mold? BRUCE? OBLIVIOUS? Later, he said, no he REALLY hadn’t heard the doorbell and he REALLY hadn’t heard us approach. When I, and others, asked what he was doing, he just shut down and barked, “I was busy” at us.
F*cker.
“I WaS bUsY.”

Appendix E: Speedster’s POV
Bruce did not just “look up”. I feel like only a speedster would have been able to fully appreciate the range of reactions and emotions that passed over Bruce in that sharp half second. As is, I will imagine I am one and try to describe the details of his reaction, as I saw them. Also, as I’d like to interpret them.
First, when he registered me mid-cry, he closed his eyes and knit his brows. I’m fairly confident this was a “what is this liability on my house doing now”. Then, by the sheer power of eye-rolling, his head began to raise and he started to snap, “What”. If you’d have paused in that moment, it would have been glorious derp. I might draw it later.
As his eyes passed our lower half, he let just a shiver of confusion cross his face.
Then he registered who I was with and the hatred passed over him like a shadow. Just for a moment, the cowl was on. Just as quickly, the mask of Bruce returned. He settled on a concerned, indignant expression.
