speaking of speaking of Abuse it's like hey it's helpful to remember to not think of it like "whoa. an extreme word broken out to make people feel bad" but rather "an identification of a type of situation where an oppressive system is being continually established / maintained and something needs to be done differently to counteract / dismantle this" Just Like With approaches to other labels created for describing the external manifestations of [there is an oppressive system here] and going "someone is saying so b/c in identifying it it's also recognizing the crucial 'so something Else external needs to manifest to improve this reality' of it all, not just like 'whoa that's a big word for extreme things that we'd all definitely recognize & all definitely even be motivated to acknowledge in the first place rather than being potentially vested in it continuing without it even being a challenge to put any description of it into words to start to communicate about it'"....just like how we all totally know that [autistic people existing] is so Extreme and must be so Abnormal and we'd all Know It when we saw it, and when someone goes "i'm autistic" what matters is that people feel weird and then it's threatened that they might be obligated to do anything differently, so that person's probably exaggerating and trying to disrupt the norm, which is as good as trying to Elevate themself. kind of like when people break out the "abuse" A-word, right....always more important that no one could potentially feel bad via someone directing [and that's bad] language at them rather than asking "but like, Are they doing this thing? Are they having this effect?" which may still be answered with "no." and certainly will be if someone's committed to feeling above other people & positioned to act on it
#not like abuse apologia is New. evergreenly ''reinvented'' & cycling back around; like say; transphobia; All Bigotry; etc....#but really if it's like ''whoa whoa....isn't it a Problem ppl may say 'Abuse' Too Easily Nowadays. what if they could say it. to you'' etc#like that's not a ''correction'' that's just The Norm as it always was. that's just the [there can't be Too Many Victims]#it's just the [but what if ppl who can just Sayyy they've experienced / are experiencing Abuse....are too Empowered] of forever....#and always involves assumptions of someone's Inherent Entitlement to something from other people like#oh no ppl are so sensitive riled up abt Abuse nowadays what if they ghost their friends :(#what if they do??? They're the ones who'll hypothetically end up isolated. & also You Can Just Do That for any or no reason#and it may be unpleasant & it may be unideal but who is Entitled to hold on to a relationship w/someone? who is Entitled to a Guarantee of#communication? how Would that be guaranteed?? if they're not comfortable talking to you / if they choose to stop doing so then like#how amazing was that friendship that was so cruelly ruined by ''ugh i can't believe anyone could think poorly of me? of Interacting w/me?#and if they can do that What's Stopping Them From Calling Me Abusive'' like guess what: Nothing#the way that words work means that anyone can Just Use Them however. you absolutely Can point to anything & use the word Abuse#which is why words also have meanings so that this can be recognized as absurdity / irrelevant Or it can be genuinely considered#which; either can be done regardless of the intention or amount of thought or hypothetical correctness of someone using w/e words#ppl who are abusing others Sure Can & Do use language against their victims which can include; or imply/conflate with; ''abuse''#which then doesn't mean ''guess we give up on Words / it's too easy to say sm shit'' b/c Ppl Can Look At The External Situations#and like you don't Lose by anyone having more material support. like ''ughhh it's so easy to Sayyy you're Disabled / describe NORMAL things#as DISABILITY (weird; extreme; bad; I'd Know It When I Saw It & Instantly Judged Its Legitimacy)'' like okay & then What If accommodation &#support that May Be needed is freely available to any & everyone. ppl who Are in a situation of abuse; even from Just One Person; are#already lacking for support / resources. oh no what if they got those but they were exaggerating. What Then#the real tl;dr here is ''yeah it's Politics w/abuse not just Vibes''#going ''hm well even when there Is abuse i guess third parties can throw up their hands b/c anyone could darvo that shit huh'' like.#that's why there's further Contexts & Patterns & Info that is relevant beyond ''who is literally capable of invoking the word Abuse or sm''#the eternal & instant classic Angle To Consider that is ''whose life is getting smaller''#meanwhile [the feelings of the person abusing other/s] & [the feelings of theoretical third parties] aren't actually what's most important#the goal isn't ''make the abuser Feel Bad'' or ''make someone go 'ok i guess i don't like them anymore then''' the goal is interrupt abuse#the victim needs support in what improves their situation / diminishes their harm; much less what might get them Out of it#(& into a broader world where abuse is super common & ''normal'' & inherent in bigger systems / structures. but still an improvement than#Also happening to have this additional situation of abuse they're now out of...)#& again if Everyone has all the support / resources they could want or need? epic. no problem

On Calling Out Antisemitism... in the Crossword
So I like to do crosswords. It's fun, sometimes I learn random facts, it exercises my brain, and that jolt of satisfaction when I figure out the gimmick brightens my day. I usually do it on the Washington Post, which is the same as the LA Times, mainly because it's free (though these days I pay for the WP in large part because I like Alexandra Petri's pieces, but I digress.)
So there I am, working on the Sunday crossword at work on a quiet Monday morning, and the clue is "sanctimonious sort." Could be many things, I skip it and continue. Slowly, as I get some of the crosses, I say to myself, "surely this isn't going to be 'pharisee'. I'm gonna be so mad if the answer is 'pharisee.'"
The answer was Pharisee.
If you don't know why that's a problem, in brief: The Pharisees were the precursors to modern Rabbinic Judaism, and that word has been used by those enacting violence upon us for centuries-- throughout blood libels, Inquisition, crusades, expulsions, etc. When "pharisee" means "sanctimonious, hypocritical, self-righteous, etc." and "pharisee" also means "Jew" even of the historic variety, it tends to be extremely bad news for the actual living Jews of whatever era it is.
So I wrote the editors of the LA Times and the Washington Post, and I said so. I told them about the history of the term. I told them that at a time when antisemitism across the United States is rising alarmingly, it is, at best, deeply irresponsible of the newspapers to allow this insidious conflation of Judaism with moral corruption and hypocrisy to appear in what ought to be a light-hearted game.
And you know what? I got a response from the LA Times within hours apologizing for the harm and saying they'd reached out to the crossword writing company to discuss it. I got a response from the acquisitions editor, who had spoken with the crossword editor, conveying their sincere apologies, saying that they were unaware of the antisemitic implications of the term, and they would never intentionally cause harm. They thanked me for bringing it to their attention, and also thanked me for my suggestion of an alternate clue ("Contemporary of Jesus").
We on Jumblr and in the Jewish community offline have spent so much time talking our throats hoarse and our typing fingers sore about the harms of antisemitism, especially since October 7. I know many of us are feeling frustrated, burnt out, and hopeless. We start to wonder what the point is, when none of it seems to be making a dent. I almost didn't send that email. I almost let it go. I let myself be distracted by work, forgot about it for a week or so until something reminded me and I got angry all over again, and then I sent off an email that I expected to be buried in the inbox to maybe get a response in a month or so, because even if it never got read, at least I knew I had written it. But it did get read, and it got shared with the relevant people, and they cared.
Sometimes people listen. Sometimes they learn. Sometimes, all it takes is one person saying "hey, this hurt me."
I'm taking the win today.

i posted this on twitter also but it’s still eating at me. i’m so fucking embarrassed to be jewish rn. i dont want to be associated with this ongoing bullshit from israel. why do we need our own state. theyre just making every jew across the globe look bad in general even though many of us are conflicted about zionism and the legitimacy of israel as a state
people have hated jews throughout history for no fuckin reason but now israel exists but now its like. GIVING people reasons to hate us as a group. note that i DON’T conflate zionism with jewishness, but a lot of people in the world don’t know the difference because theyre uninformed and been dripfed cultural antisemitic tropes their whole life and that’s the scary part is them falsely putting two and two together. like what the fuck israel stop youre just putting fuel on the fire for people around the world to hate an entire group of historically persecuted people if youre being this shitty with your insane colonialism and apartheid like……I Want No Fuckin Part Of This. you’re spelling our own doom. you cant just swoop in and go “mine now” and then oppress the people you took land from under a regime without my blood boiling at the injustice no matter WHO you are. even if my lineage is tied to you. so when news outlets support israel it doesn’t feel like they have the best interest of jews as a people in mind. it’s in the interest of a zionist ethnostate and whatever that christian zionism belief is about the jewish people returning to the holy land as prerequisite for the second coming of jesus. its not like they care about us as a dispersed ethnocultural group, it’s all for that religious narrative that a bunch of people in the US are backing.
saying you want all jews to die is antisemitic. beating someone up because they’re jewish and no other reason without knowing their views is antisemitic. criticizing human rights violations perpetrated by israel and the belief that one group deserves more rights another is not antisemitic. and the fact that israel has the ability to pull that antisemitism card in response to criticisms of the violations they commit because their state is the “jewish homeland” drives me fucking insane. take fucking accountability for your actions. and yes, there do exist full-on anti-jewish groups in the middle east that go beyond hatred of israel’s policies and existence as a state and i’m tired of people pretending there aren’t in fear of appearing to seem like they support the state of israel. on the other side of things many people overestimate this by fearmongering and saying EVERY arab is out to get jews worldwide, telling people like me “they want YOU dead”. this is not the belief every person in the middle east and it really rubs me the wrong way that people group millions of individuals into all-encompassing lumps like this. many people there do understand nuance of this political situation.
even if i have that “right of return” by israeli law or whatever, i don’t feel obliged to it; it does not register as fair. why do i have a “right of return” when i’ve never even been there in the first place while palestinians who have homes there can’t return to them? what’s the basis for that? substituting objective reality with an imaginary reality? i don’t think like that. i can hypothetically come and go whenever i please but palestinians are severely limited in mobility? what makes me more entitled to that land than the people who lived there for centuries? nothing that comes from natural law thats for sure. it’s all artificial and inflated.
but at the same time i also dont want to be the target of antisemitism and caught in the fray just for being ethnically jewish. once people start calling for the genocide of entire groups we’ve got issues (and you better believe this absolutely applies to the palestinian victims in gaza too), because people who dissent to the violence perpetrated by the loudest are caught in there with the people who are perpetrating the violence. lack of nuance. people conflating israel and its zionist apartheid policies with jewish ethnicity and culture worldwide. other people conflating being terrorist anti-jew with muslims worldwide (like that 6-year old palestinian-american boy that was just stabbed to death in chicago). scary times man. but as a jew i can’t just opt out of this if it’s how i was born as. i don’t have control over that. but i can control what i think and what my beliefs are

I hate how much heteronormative storytelling links romance and sexuality together, because I just know that that’s why it took me so many years to figure out that I’m ace.
And yes, I’m specifying heternormative storytelling, because that’s the thing we get force-fed in media pretty much from the day we first get put in front of a screen.
Once we move past the fluffy Disney movie stage of life and enter the teenage years, where sexuality becomes a part of the storytelling to varying degrees of explicitness, we hit the real problem zone. *
(* For this particular issue. The forced romantic narrative in every single children’s movie is its own problem zone when we’re talking about aromanticism.)
A thing I complain about quite frequently is the lack of m/f friendships, the way whenever A Guy and A Gal are friends, the heteronormativity kicks in. Unless they’re both in explicit other (stable! not ‘this ship is meant to be broken up for The Main Romance’) romantic relationships, it’s virtually impossible for the straights to just... keep them friends. There have to be some kind of romantic feelings involved. No other possible reason why A Guy might like A Gal or vice versa. The notion of pure, actual friendship goes over these writers’ heads.
Anyway. To the point of the post. Once The Gal and The Guy realize that they aren’t ~just friends~ but really have romantic feelings for each other and once the will they/won’t they stops and they actually will... More often than not do the writers forget to actually include any romance at all.
I mean, genuinely. Their relationship continues the exact same way it was before they got together. But now they have sex. The only discernible difference between “friendship” and “romance” in pretty much every TV show or movie I grew up on was that they now fucked and kissed.
Very often highlighted even more by the fact that they’re portrayed as so fucking horny, they barely got the confession out before immediately stumbling into the bedroom to get it on. Not a single date. Not even a full conversation wasted there. Just going at it like Noah just herded them onto a big ship.
And if you grow up watching these things during your formative years of what constitutes a relationship and they influence you during your “what the fuck’s going on with my own identity” phase, they paint an incredibly conflated image of romance and sex.
Namely, that romance not only doesn’t work without sex, but even more so also a notion that the only real difference between friendship and romance is sexual intercourse.
So, even if the term “asexual” somehow crossed your path at any point prior to the “what the fuck’s going on with my own identity” phase, that gets immediately dismissed as even vaguely being a possibility if you do experience romantic attraction. **
(** And also if you experience aesthetic attraction, seeing as absolutely nobody and nothing really prepared 90s kids for the difference between aesthetic and sexual attraction. Kids nowadays have more resources more readily available thanks to the internet and I’m genuinely so glad for them.)
Clearly, I can’t be asexual because I find people pretty and finding people pretty means wanting to have sex with them and having sex is the requirement for romance and I do want romance in my life. So, I guess I’m a “late bloomer”?
So. Yeah. My two cents on how heteronormative storytelling has harmed not just homosexual kids figuring themselves out but also asexual kids, because of the ways in which heterosexual relationships have been and still are being framed in media.

What is gender?
Instead of asking “what is a woman?” I propose we should ask more what gender is.  The transgender movement is, fundamentally about placing gender above sex, in language and law- although claiming sex is a spectrum or a complete construction is becoming more common.  ‘Woman’ and ‘man’ aren’t sex terms, they’re genders, sexual attraction is based on gender, not sex, and public planning should be based on gender.  So, what is it?
The roots of the word gender came from Latin, and originally meant ‘category, group.’  It has etymological roots with the word genre, and this is partly why we have the term grammatical gender in many languages.  Gender became a synonym for biological sex hundreds of years ago, and is used partly as a more family friendly alternative.  As a separate entity, however, gender refers to the social roles of male and female.
Here are a few definitions and helpful information:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s look at the specifics of the different interpretations of the word ‘gender’.
Gender roles: Self explanatory. What feminists are against. What transgender activists claim to be against, and what they claim is not the basis for transgender identity. This seems to be the most clear and understandable definition, to me, anyway.
Gender identity: An internal sense of gender. This has been claimed to exist, but how this could possibly present or feel has not been in anyway demonstrated. Studies have shown transgender people have the brains of the gender they identify as, but those studies are shoddy and flawed. Brain scans aren’t required to transition, these studies don’t account for nonbinary-identified people, and the brain sex argument has fallen out of favor- so, we’ll say that’s not what’s being discussed here. So, what is? What is this internal gender identity? Can we find it? How do we know everyone has it? And why should it be prioritized over birth sex? What’s being described is, frankly, unverifiable and flimsy. Not to mention quite useless. This doesn’t mean I think that people who claim to have this feeling are lying- they could have something that is interpreted as gender, but that doesn’t mean it’s experienced by the general population, and this feeling could be caused by any number of areas. If this feeling is, indeed, dysphoria at being referred to a certain way, and/or euphoria at being referred to a certain way, again, how can we know this is a symptom of some deep held identity, or a sign of something different? How can we verify this, and while I understand personally adapting language to accommodate someone in your life, why should this take priority over sex for the general population? Gender expression- How is this different than sex stereotypes, and gender roles? While I’m told that this doesn’t need to match general societal expectations, how does that actually work? If you’ve expressing your gender- whether that’s man, woman, or some form of nonbinary- even if you know anyone can dress how they want, even if you say ‘feminine’ or ‘masculine’ means something different to everyone, you are still making a connection between gender and how one looks- and according to the Miriam-Webster photo, acts. Not only is this, again, ridiculous to elevate this above sex in language and law, it’s unhealthy to hyper focus on how others see you, not to mention confusing and harmful message to constantly use the terms ‘gender identity’ and ‘gender expression’ together. I’ll be honest, even if transgender people claim the movement isn’t about stereotypes, I don’t believe that’s the case. At the very least, it’s not the message every one of them got. Conflating gender with sex, and the words ‘men’ and ‘women’ with personality, a feeling, clothes, vibes, interests, or an aesthetic, is a dangerous and ridiculous concept. Instead of what it’s claiming to do- breaking the gender binary- it’s putting men and women in a box, yourself. You are the one limiting what men and women can be. Even if everyone decided to identify as some form of nonbinary, this would not affect the reality of sexism and the perceived inferiority of 50% of the population- it would only paint a coat over it. It would make communication and activism impossible. By conflating experience of autism, or interest in space, or interest in a certain style of dress- with the terms man and woman, you are perpetuating stereotypes, not breaking them.

We are headed into our final Drama Shower show of the season. How do you rank the shows we got this season and how are you feeling about the direction of the project?
What is Drama Shower and Why Does It Matter?
Before we get into rating these shows, I want to do a breakdown of what this is. To give you a sense of how big a deal Drama Shower is, fans are regularly updating a Wikipedia page for it with relevant links to follow the project. Also, there is a dedicated MDL page for it.
Tumblr media
Drama Shower is a dedicated half-hour programming block on MBS, a Japanese broadcaster that is over 70 years old, in conjunction with Kadokawa, a Japanese publisher and holding group, that plays BL content at 1:30 am on Fridays. The project's main producer is Kaoru Azuma, who is a self-described long-time BL fan. He wants to show that BL can do a variety of stories in genre, and has recently stated that he wants to produce original content through the project as well.
Tumblr media
We originally had six shows air through year one: Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice But to Kiss!, Senpai, This Can't Be Love!, Takara-kun to Amagi-kun, Eternal Yesterday, Candy Color Paradox, and Jack o' Frost.
Tumblr media
I originally reviewed these shows as overall a mixed bag, but showing great promise. I liked that they got more comfortable with depictions of m/m intimacy over time. I thought Mr. Unlucky was legitimately funny (9), Senpai never found its footing (6), Takara and Amagi mildly squandered their premise (8), Eternal Yesterday was extremely poignant (10), Candy Color Paradox had ambitions that exceeded its talent pool (7), and Jack o' Frost was a really strong finish (9.5).
Tumblr media
MBS seemed to enjoy the performance of this project enough to continue it for another year.
Tumblr media
For me, I think it's very significant to give BL itself a time slot to see how audiences are responding to BL as a concept compared to the pitch of individual shows. I'm really encouraged by MBS doing this. Even if you don't care about the name MBS, you have interacted with their content, because they are also behind Full Metal Alchemist and Haikyuu! anime adaptations.
Rating Year 2
I actually liked the way year 2 started, even if I'm a bit mixed on the end. I really loved opening with Tokyo in April is... I liked that they had BL trying to be topical. I think the show unfortunately conflates some things it shouldn't, but I loved TIAI and I loved Ren and Ryunosuke's experience being gay men. I liked the changes they made to the source material. This show was dark in a way that it owned, and I really like that. I gave it a 9.
Tumblr media
We then moved to My Personal Weatherman, and that went over well for the people who like to see really hot people go at it with each other. I actually enjoyed how much Yoh and Segasaki actively misunderstood each other even as they were speaking to each other. I don't know that they exactly completed their story, and I suspect that there may be a future outing for this show. Despite enjoying it, I think it didn't get all of its pieces together fully and gave it an 8.5.
Tumblr media
We then crossed over into uncertain territory with One Room Angel. Despite enjoying a lot of what was going on in this show, I don't actually think it's a romance. It's my understanding that the angel character is a lot younger in the source material, and so they may have been a little shy about how much they did with these characters on screen. I also don't think the storytelling was balanced between the leads. However, because I am susceptible to complex stories about grief, I gave this show an 8.
Tumblr media
Now, we have Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun. I hated this show so much. I think it makes the unfortunate mistake of asking me to care about how homophobia and public perceptions impacts people through its flashback drama, but then does nothing with that in the front. It sucked so hard, and I'm really disappointed because I thought this show had some of the most potential, and I thought Toki was one of the most watchable characters Drama Shower had produced. I ended up giving it a 4.
Tumblr media
Our next and final show (I think) for this outing is called My Strawberry Film. This one will also be in a high school, but I know little about it, other than we may have a GL plot in it.
Tumblr media
So, overall I'd give Drama Shower an 8. I think fans of BL, and especially Japanese BL, should continue to show up and support it. The fact that we have a dedicated programming block is important. The fact that none of these shows has felt like a retread so far is super important. Drama Shower is varied. There is something in here for almost everyone. Drama Shower is the biggest commitment to BL we've had from a distributor other than GMMTV's ongoing BL slate. Taiwan has Vidol doing is four projects, but Drama Shower is the first time I know of that a Japanese distributor has focused on BL in a meaningful, ongoing way. We should stick with it.

I dont think Mob is naive as much as he's socially unaware, like the reason why he trusts Reigen so blindly is a bit more complex than just him being naive
Cause Mob reached out to Reigen because he was desperate to find someone like him, someone who understood his psychic specific issues, someone that could truly know what he's feeling and going through and give him guidance and support
Post incident Mob's thinking process was something along the lines of my powers hurt people -> my powers are bad -> my powers (my emotions, my instincts, myself) cannot be trusted
So he lost all confidence and trust in his own actions, resigning to being as passive as possible to avoid any further damage to anyone else, thus he started doubting his own perception of reality too
He's a kid already struggling with being ostracised for being socially inept, who just got traumatised and all of his insecurity increased by the tenfold, he doesn't know how to process what he's going through. He needs help.
And here comes Reigen, seemingly reliable, a responsible adult in a child's eyes, someone who claims he can understand him
Even tho Reigen doesnt. But it doesn't matter, because Mob finds comfort in his words and takes them to heart
Even if Reigen doesn't fully get it, even if he doesn't see the bigger picture, even if his advice isn't always the best
Eventually, Mob grows up, realises Reigen isn't as honest as he seemed through his 11 year old perspective, but like most things, he refuses to acknowledge it on a deeper level
Mob knows, but never tells Reigen, never thinks about what all those lies mean to him (ofc until he forces himself to face those doubts regarding Reigen, to properly acknowledge both of their flaws and accept them as they are, I should scream into the void about Confession Arc more God)
Due to his lack of trust in himself, Mob has relied on Reigen for years now to shape his moral compass, his thoughts, his decisions
Because well, Reigen lies, sure, but he isnt a bad person. When he hurts Mob, it isn't intentional or with ill intent, he still wants the best for him, what's the issue?
Except that it stunts Mob's growth. He doesn't develop as a person, doesn't have goals or wishes or ambitions, can't make choices on his own, he doesn't even let himself acknowledge his own emotions, he refuses to let himself exist
But Mob realises in time that he wants more than that, he wants to become better and be independent and feel again
Still, he puts the acknowledgement of the lies on hold for as long as he can, unwilling to question the way things are
This can make him feel a little naive, he constantly relies on Reigen and trusts his decisions and raises questions rarely until separation arc when he finally puts his foot down
And I do think that moment is the most resounding proof we have that Mob knows and allows himself to be used by Reigen, not wanting to shake the status quo, until he gets fed up
I mentioned the social ineptitude at the beggining but idk if I should even elaborate on that, you've watched the show, you know what I mean
He's blunt and can't read social cues or tonality that well and can't speak in front of crowds and is overall pretty awkward and I do think some people conflate that with naivety
Mob is still a child, he doesnt fully understand how the world works at the ripe age of 14 years old, but some folks take that as him being inherently naive/innocent/whatever which I don't find true
#ppl do a similar thing with seri but for different reasons but i do think in his case its worse cause thats a whole ass adult#anyway. i dont think im saying anything new i just wanted to ramble <3#i missed mobposting what can i say#ik i saw somebody talk about this in a more eloquent way but i doubt i could find the post cause i dont think i rbed it so rip#mp100#mob psycho 100#kageyama shigeo#that ova needs to come out already im going insane#cine te a intrebat#also hope i didnt come off as too negative towards reigen or smth#but like. my favourite part of confession is him saying (i didnt know!) LIKE YEAH. U DIDNT. LMAO.#ppl treat him as a bit too reliable sometimes and dont give him a lot of room to grow like Reigen isnt even 30 yet!! he aint that old!!#he still needs to get HIS own shit tgt before giving out advice just saying. also he totally doesnt understand mob fully. how can he??#he never mentions the incident with ritsu and considering mobs inclination of never telling anyone anything unless prompted#i doubt he knows... like reigen genuinely doesnt know the extent of mobs trauma!! when he said I Didnt Know he meant that shit!!!!!!#which is like. fine. cause to me whats important is how he always wants to protect mob and support him and help him#even if he doesnt always know how. even if advice backfires. hes always there and hes always trying and hes just as human and flawed as mob#himself#ig what im getting at is just that im bothered by the Flavour of reliable adult fandom is giving him. hes a lil pathetic and#fucks up sometimes and thats fiiiiiine. i feel like i talked shit about reigen but i do think hes a good guy and IS reliable just not in the#gives great advice way. but in the Knows How To Talk And Bullshit His Way Through Everything and Has Genuinely Good Intentions (usually)#and will throw away all of his self preservation if the situation requires him to. his advice is good but can be vague idk ONE rlly managed#to balance his pathetic side with his helpful reliable side and i dont think i articulated it the best way but like.... hes simultaneously#pathetic and sad but also the most sane and reliable adult in this show. rant over see u next time byeeee

Red Flowers: Rambles About Camp 2, Glomas, and Chapter 7
[JP spoilers ahead, you have been warned]
HI I’M SO MAD BECAUSE WDYM CAMP VARGAS 2 FORESHADOWED GLORIOUS MASQUERADE????????
Tumblr media
For context, in this part of the event, Film Studies Club and Board Game Club just shoo’d away the forest fairies, and then they talked about why they were trying to put out the campfires. Then they started talking about the forest fire that happened back then: a miner’s campfire accidentally got too big and the fire happened. And then that screenshot comes up.
Vil also says “red flowers” in the JP.
Tumblr media
This is insane to me because in the JP version, Camp Vargas 2 was the event directly before Glorious Masquerade. Camp happened late September 2022. Glomas happened the next month.
THIS IS SO INSANE….. THEY LITERALLY JUST DROPPED THIS SO INNOCUOUSLY AND THEN MAKE IT THE BIG THING IN THE NEXT EVENT…….
But it’s also so interesting too because!! A friend and I were talking about it because the red flowers that Rollo grew in Glomas are forbidden flowers! They were a thing in the past at one point. Fae would have known about the flowers, because in the first place, they’re fatal to them. The red flowers absorb magic and they will keep absorbing magic until the mage user has no more magic. And as beings literally made of magic, this is definitely deadly for fae. So in a way, this tidbit of information packs so much worldbuilding, not just about the forest fire, but also the perspective of fae.
Worth interesting to bring up here: Red flowers most likely came from Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. In the movie, humans made red dust from it to kill fae in the human-fae war. As that war is canon in Twst, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Silver Knights (the humans) used them against the faes. So with that context, fae would see red flowers as a horrible thing, and to conflate it with fire, which kills living things too… yeah.
And now that we’re on this topic, we have to talk about chapter 7 because I am haunted by the fact that in the Maleficent movie, the faes do win against the humans.
But in Twst? We clearly see that that’s not the case.
Briar Valley was once called Land of Briar, as seen in the title cards showing the location in Lilia’s dream, connoting that it used to be much bigger. If you look at the map of Briar Valley, you’d also see that there are division marks on the country itself.
Literally the human-fae war has been twisted in this game. And that’s so fucking beautiful because in the original Sleeping Beauty, the humans won against Maleficent. Fae was the villain in that movie. But in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, it’s the faes who won. Humans were the villain. And THEN you see here that the humans won, but now you can’t really tell who’s hero or villain. It’s easy to say the humans because fae like Lilia are protagonists in this game… but remember too that Silver is fully human And may or may not be descended from the Knights and Sebek is half human. Ffs, Yuu is human.
Anyway, consider that Maleficent lives despite the red dust used in the war. But now think: if the silver knights Do use the red flowers, that may have been what killed Malleus’ mother… and the one who lives is Lilia.
Consider too that in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, one of the three fairies died to that red dust protecting the other fae :-) the blue fairy specifically. Noteworthy too that she’s the one who lifts Aurora’s curse such that she doesn’t die but just sleeps till she’s given true love’s kiss. Kinda… like how Malleus was born. Needs to be given love to “wake up”, to be hatched, to live. Like how Aurora needs to wake up via true love’s kiss to live. Merryweather in that sense is kinda like Lilia.
How haunting then that if Twst didn’t twist (heh) Maleficent surviving the war and made Mallenoir live, it could have been Lilia (who was the one who helped Malleus hatch) who died from the war.
Anyway, next chapter 7 update is probably gonna be so fire (haha) !!! But now it’s food for thought for glomas 2

ツッコミ, Japanese comedy, and linguistic relativity
Recently, I’ve noticed that while watching Japanese comedy in Japanese, I’ve started laughing at the ツッコミ, when before I would just laugh at the ボケ, or not laugh at all. I used to complain to my Japanese partner that I thought ツッコミ was unnecessary. So what changed? Why have I started laughing at it?
On QI, when asked if he came to a theory about the nature of jokes while writing his book The Naked Jape, Jimmy Carr said,
“There’s all these different theories from around the world, and they’re all pretty much nonsense. They all work in exactly the same way though. All jokes are sort of two stories. So the first story makes you make an assumption, and the second story makes you realise that the assumption was wrong” — Link to video
This is backed up by other research into theories of humour and is called the Incongruous juxtaposition theory.
ツッコミ, like all jokes, works like this. The first “story” (aka the setup) is the ボケ, usually something weird or absurd. The second “story” (aka the punchline) is the ツッコミ, which points out that the weird thing is weird.
When I first saw ツッコミ on a tv show, I didn’t think it was very funny. Why not just say the absurd thing and leave it at that - the weird part is the funny part, right? I don’t need to be told it’s absurd. However, I now think it’s more complicated than that.
In the english speaking world, usually our setups are pretty normal sounding, and then the punchline is absurd. So we begin to conflate “absurd” with “punchline: laugh now”, because when you hear something absurd, that’s when you’re supposed to laugh - that’s when the laugh track plays on the sitcom; that’s the point in the anecdote when your friends start laughing; that’s when the people around you are laughing and you’re expected to laugh too. In contrast, the opposite is true for japanese jokes: the setup is absurd and the punchline is the status quo.
Tumblr media
(I realise this is a gross oversimplification of how comedy works but bear with me)
Japanese people experience the opposite: they conflate “status quo” with “punchline: laugh now”, because that’s when they're supposed to laugh. What is “funny” is such a social question that it’s entirely dependent on culture. Funniness is a self-fulfilling prophecy - if something is considered funny, then it’s funny. Japanese people have been conditioned to find their ツッコミ punchlines funny, just like we have been conditioned to find our punchlines funny.
So, the “laugh now” signpost looks different for english speakers vs japanese speakers. Why does that make me laugh at a ツッコミ joke in Japanese but not in English? I believe it comes from where my brain starts recognising “a joke has begun”. (Side note: I think in English, we’re more likely to retroactively recognise something as a setup to a joke)
For example, let’s take the scene from Ranking of Kings I already partially discussed in my Why Are Anime Translations So Bad post.
In this scene, we’re given a setup. These orcs are harassing Despa's apprentice Bojji in a tavern, but Despa doesn’t seem like he’ll be provoked. He’s controlling himself - acting very mature. Then one of the orcs makes fun of Despa’s face, and Despa immediately punches him through a table and exclaims “You can insult my apprentice, but I won’t let you insult me!” Classic English-style punchline.
But then, Kage comes in and says “逆でしょ!” which doesn’t have a great translation but it’s something like “You've got it backwards!” As an English speaking audience, this feels unnecessary. We already laughed! Kage’s overexplaining the joke!
But when I was watching this in Japanese, I recognised Despa’s line as the setup, and unintentionally waited before laughing, because I knew the real punchline was coming after it. It was only until I was doing research for that anime translations post that I realised Kage’s punchline wasn’t funny in English at all.
All of this to say, laughter is a social and cultural behaviour and (I believe) we laugh to show others that we understood some sort of juxtaposition. That’s why people tend to laugh more at stand up comedy when they’re in the audience as opposed to watching it alone on their phone. Even when we’re alone, because those social and cultural influences are imprinted on our brains, we laugh. And language is the ultimate cultural compartmentalisation tool. When I speak Japanese, I need to be aware of cultural constructs (such as respect hierarchy) that simply do not exist in my native language (Australian English). Which means when I’m watching something in Japanese, the social and cultural influences that I subconsciously let affect my brain at that moment will be different, which leads to me finding different things funny at different times. This idea is known as linguistic relativity, or the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, made famous by the fantastic film Arrival (it's also apparently quite hotly debated and misunderstood, but that's a post for another day).
To get back to my original question - What changed? Well, I think I finally managed to soak in enough subconscious cultural understanding of what to expect in a Japanese joke that now I end up laughing along with everyone else! Being in “Japanese mode” makes me subconsciously aware of different cultural norms (including comedy norms now), which means I might find a joke hilarious in Japanese, and not funny at all in English, even if it was somehow perfectly translated without losing or gaining any extra meaning. I think this is probably true for all multilingual people.

re the ask about stede not doing enough to make up for ditching ed - did it not balace out that ed tortured his crew for weeks and tried to kill lucius? idk why everybody is woobifying ed as if being sad or having a hard life is a justification for any of the shit he did like he has autonomy and chooses to behave the way he does when stede leaves. same goes for blaming all of eds actions on izzy as if izzy forced him to do anything? i think its weird and doesn’t do justice to his intentionally morally gray dimensional flawed character
okay so anon you are bringing up multiple things and conflating them, i think so let's take this one bit at a time
re the ask about stede not doing enough to make up for ditching ed - did it not balace out that ed tortured his crew for weeks and tried to kill lucius?
so first, let's be clear: ed's actions towards other people do NOT balance out stede's actions towards ed. that's uhhhh not how it works. when it comes to if stede did enough to make up for ghosting ed, that is a situation resolved only within ed and stede's personal relationship. stede leaving doesn't justify ed being callous and later cruel to the crew, but likewise, ed being callous and later cruel to the crew doesn't mean stede didn't owe something to ed if he wanted their relationship to work.
now let me further say that...i don't think that ed tortured (members of) stede's crew for weeks. in fact, i don't think he's physically harmed any of the crew aside from izzy, and I would argue that his dynamic with izzy is it's own special beef. if anything, i would say that between season 1 episode 10 and season 2 episode 1, ed's been a classic overachieving boss pushing his staff to the breaking point by having them work long shifts with no breaks and low pay.
this is not good, by the way, i am not saying he is being a good boss; kraken ed is fully that shithead boss who schedules 13 hour days and thinks a pizza party or donuts in the lounge make up for it. izzy tells him morale is low and he asks if they got cake, and then if they want drugs. the crew does not describe being worn down from specific fear of ed - they are worn down by day after day after day of endless raids without breaks; all the worst parts of piracy (the raids, the violence, the death) with none of the benefits (the break time between targets, the shore leave, getting paid).
again i say this is not good because it's not, but also, i think the fandom has marinated in this idea that because ed took izzy's toe he'd be doing all kinds of violence to the rest of the crew, and s2e1 doesn't really bare that out. they're shocked and horrified that he actually shoots izzy, and none of them are missing bits - in fact, the behavior is apparently so unique to izzy that they think izzy and ed have a toxic relationship. if it was any of them getting that, it wouldn't be an intervention getting plotted.
(he did for sure try to kill lucius though, which is why i'm glad lucius got to dump him overboard lol. lucky lucius. izzy tried to kill stede twice and stede didn't even get to stab him once.)
idk why everybody is woobifying ed as if being sad or having a hard life is a justification for any of the shit he did like he has autonomy and chooses to behave the way he does when stede leaves.
now half the fandom is woobifying ed because we love him and like him and also because the other half of the fandom is wildly racist about him so.
but, also, it's important context that the showrunner describes ed's actions as "a bit much" and "not entirely inappropriate". in the context of their environment, most of what ed did is not that shocking or stunning; he has hurt people, but even the people he hurt move on from it relatively soon, and we can see from spanish jackie (who doesn't give her employees enough money to pursue their own ambitions/perfectly fine with killing a husband to remove an obstacle) and ned low (literally all of that in episode 6) and izzy (in the like ten minutes he was captain and forced people to season his food and threatening folks with going hungry for laughing at him) that pirate captains are, generally, pretty shit, actually.
roach and archie at various points express sentiments that show this is all pretty normal for pirates; it's not that ed wasn't a dick, it's that he wasn't uniquely evil or fucked up. it's also that his behavior is sympathetic to many people because the show makes it abundantly clear that he's incredibly depressed and suicidal, and while it's definitely NOT okay to hurt people because you're in a bad way, the show is definitely more geared towards "even when you do all that fucked up shit, you still can be deserving of love and compassion if you reach for it" rather than "if you do fucked up shit you instantly are on the death list".
same goes for blaming all of eds actions on izzy as if izzy forced him to do anything? i think its weird and doesn’t do justice to his intentionally morally gray dimensional flawed character
izzy's not responsible for ed's actions in the sense that he put a gun to ed's head during every move, but he plays a critical role in making all that shit happen. it's like how stede wouldn't have ghosted ed if chauncey hadn't of dragged him out of bed - the festering self hatred that chauncey tapped into was there in stede, but he wouldn't have given in without a jolt from his past. the festering self hatred in ed wouldn't have broiled over into the kraken without izzy, but that was all still in ed.
izzy is pivotal in all that shit happening. if izzy hadn't of come in and jabbed ed in every sore spot he had and been a huge homophobia ridden pest that *also* threatened ed if he continued behaving in a way izzy didn't like, ed wouldn't have gone all kraken.
however, ed still DID go all kraken, so like, yeah, he did that shit. izzy is the explanation for why he did, but it's ed who did it so he has to make amends.
but also like ed is only as morally gray as literally everyone else. frenchie and roach are both in full support of torture. jim fully tried to kill a guy for throwing a glass at archie. all of them are professional murderers who make their living being the absolute living nightmares of people who are just living their lives doing their thing.
ed isn't any more morally gray than anyone else, but it's very weird how people try to make it out like ED is the intentionally morally gray character when it's just that this is a show about professional violent criminals, so the show doesn't really moralize about acts of violence.
now taking it back to the top though:
nothing ed did to the crew would change stede's need to re-earn ed's trust for ghosting him without a word and not being honest about his feelings and doubts. if ed wanted stede to atone for that, that would be ed's right as a person in the relationship - just like it would be the right of frenchie, archie, jim, or fang to want to ed to do something more before they offered their forgiveness. the fucked up shit you do to other people does not retroactively justify the fucked up shit someone else did to you. stede doesn't get a get out of the doghouse free card for ghosting ed just because ed was a dick to other people; he gets a get out of the doghouse free card because ed decides to forgive him and try again.

Quick question: with your expression on the current Palestine and Israel conflict, why do you still draw/repost Dina, an openly Jewish character?
i'm gonna do the kind thing here and assume you're just wildly misinformed/under-educated on the subject.
supporting the state of israel absolutely does not equate to the support or allyship with jewish people nor the indulgence in jewish characters (the batshit latter of which i'll be addressing later). these two things have fuck-all to do with one another, and the conflation of the two is fucking offensive. to assume that me being anti-israel and pro-palestine must mean that i'm antisemitic, or that me drawing dina is somehow contradictory to my support of palestine, is incredibly illogical, because what does dina being jewish have to do with the fascists nuking children and cutting off electricity, wifi and water from the numerous victims so that they can keep killing them with as little coverage as possible. like, really. tell me.
the simple state of being jewish sure as hell does not equate to supporting israel, i cannot stress this enough.
many, many, many jewish people are against israel and what it is doing to the palestinian people, and there are holocaust survivors who have come forward and stated that what israel is doing is very much akin to what was done to jewish people in wwii. it is genocide. it is ethnic cleansing. it is a government receiving funds, aid, and support to enact violence upon a native people. THE DEATH COUNT IS UP TO TEN FUCKING THOUSAND. i don't know how this hasn't clicked yet.
not to mention, why the fuck are we viewing the very real humanitarian crisis through the lens of liking a fictional character? or liking a media franchise? like, the druckmann shit be damned, why are we doing this right now? does no one realize how fucking INSANE it is we're even somehow relating a fictional character to a GENOCIDE?
as an addendum: if you're a zionist or a fence-sitter asking this question as a "gotcha" because i made a clear pro-palestine stance, it's got to be the most braindead, idiotic, simple-minded gotcha in the fucking world.

Something wasn't right.
You peered over the glazed ceramic lip of your coffee mug to look at your husband. Your brows pinched in worry as you swallowed, gently setting the mug down as you studied his demeanor.
He seemed off.
It was like he hadn't yet fully woken up despite being up for hours. He was sluggish as he moved about the farmhouse. His eyes didn't seem to be their usual vibrant emerald green you could stare into all day and never get bored. His skin wasn't sun kissed, but pale and dull with dark circles around his eyes. Even his hair didn't seem to have that romantic seaside lover's shine he always manages to get right, it looked dull and lifeless. He walked past you, never forgetting to press a kiss against your cheek. His lips felt freezing like he was dead.
That's because he was.
"When was the last time you fed, Elliott?"
Your voice stopped him in his tracks, but it wasn't like he was planning on moving from where he was standing next to you. He pressed his body against yours, really showing you just how cold his body had become. He drank up your warmth, leaning into it like his life depended on it. His lanky arms came up and gently wrapped around your person, dragging you in closer to his frigid body.
"Not since you let me last, my darling," he hummed.
You couldn't help the soft and very brief gasp that left your lips when you felt his fingertip brush past the hair that hid your neck to reveal the nearly-faded mark. It wasn't big, really it wasn't noticeable anymore. But when he gave it to you? You fussed over it in the vanity mirror while Elliott watched on, pleased with his work.
"Why didn't you say anything? I would've let you."
Elliott pressed his lips to your throat and gently kissed the scarred skin. It was right by your pulse point. He was savoring the way your heart fluttered from his kisses alone.
"I always feel so guilty asking, dearest."
He took in your sweet smell, letting it fog up his mind without any fuss. He could drink up your scent all day, get high on it. He wanted to so badly.
He kissed at your throat, right under the old mark he had left and greedily ran his tongue over your skin. He savored how salty you were from tending to the farm and how sweet your natural taste was. You tasted like the finest of chocolates he would sometimes indulge in when he was human so long ago.
His hands snatched at your waist, dragging you in close to his person before tangling behind your back. His fingers took handfuls of your clothing, twisting into the material so you wouldn't squirm too much in his grip. He licked at your skin, barely brushing his sharp teeth over your delicate skin right by your pulse point. He would already taste your sweet blood against his pearly fangs, feel how it warmed his body greatly and made him feel alive again.
You stopped him with a gentle push at his shoulders.
"Can you not do my neck this time?" you asked in a soft, weak voice. "I'm sorry, I-"
"Of course," he mused. He pulled away from your throat to look you in the eyes. His pupils had been blown wide, leaving just barely a small ring of emerald green that seemed to glow faintly in the dim lighting of the farmhouse. "I know of a few other places that might be enjoyable for us both."
Your eyes flicked between the sharp canines in his mouth and his predatory eyes. They bore right into your soul and you fucking loved the way they always sent tingles down your spine.
"Like where?"
Elliott roughly unlatched one hand from your back to grab at your breast, squeezing it gently as you suddenly gasped.
"I could drink from your perfect breasts, they're always such a sweet treat for me." He pressed your lower back up against the countertop and caged you against it. You felt your face heat up and your heart beat rapidly against your chest. You felt a familiar bloom of heat start to swell between your legs, and you knew Elliott could smell it. And the moment he did, you swore his pupils nearly swallowed the rest of his iris whole. He pressed himself closer against you, placing a knee between the apex of your legs. "I could make the experience even sweeter, my love," he purred.
"Elliott-"
"I could fuck you as I drink from you. Bite into you as you're cumming around my cock, feed from you as you're crying out my name while my head is buried between your breasts." God, just his words alone made your eyes want to roll in the back of your head with lust. He pressed a kiss once again to your throat, ghosting the sharp tips of his fangs over your precious skin. He loved how your skin became goose-fleshed from his lips alone. His other hand snaked down to your pussy, his fingers eagerly enjoying how wet you had become just from his words alone. "Or perhaps I drink from your thighs? Biting into such soft skin as I'm fingering you? Having your legs wrapped around my head? It all sounds like a dream come true, my dear."
"Please Elliott, I need you."
You grabbed his collar for support, arching your back so your belly pressed against his abdomen. You whined as his fingers rubbed your clothed cunt, teeth grit as you wanted nothing more than your husband to fuck the lights out of you.
He hoisted you up like you weighed nothing and hauled you into the bedroom, setting you down with such ease. His hands pulled at your clothes like they offended him, tugging your shirt up and over your head while you struggled to remove your pants quickly. Your loving husband unhooked your bra, catching your delicate skin in his hands and massaging at the plush skin, the pads of his fingertips ran across your nipples to make them bud.
Once you had kicked off your pants, it was Elliott's turn to shed his clothes. Doing so with great speed, your eyes settled on his hard cock he had taken in one hand, his thumb rolling over the swollen head that leaked a bead of precum.precut.
Elliott snatched at your ankles and pulled you closer to him until your ass was off of the bed. He settled your ankles over his broad shoulders before he brought his head down to your dripping cunt. His cold breath against your hot pussy made your mind start to go nuts. You grabbed at the sheets and pleaded softly as you felt his fangs brush against your delicate womanhood.
You whined, head rolling back against against the sheets as you felt his tongue part your slick walls. Your mouth hung open as a guttural moan echoed out of you, your eyes fluttering while your mind became nothing more than warm oozing honey. Elliott growled against your cunt, you felt the pricks of his fangs just barely scratching at your delicate skin. He moaned when small droplets of your sweet blood mixing in with your arousal, it tasted like something only fables and legends could describe. It was unreal how perfect you tasted, how fucking perfect you were. His tongue teased at your entrance, the tip of his tongue swirled around your labia and barely pressed into your core and you were a whining mess.
He chased your arousal like he was hunting it. His hands snatched at your hips to keep your still as your hands snatched at his hair and buried your fingers in his auburn locks.
You came suddenly on his face, nails scratching deliciously at his scalp as your body seized up and relaxed at the same. Euphoria washed over your body as your back arched off of the bed, wanting nothing more than to have Elliott lick up your sweet honey all night long. You swore you could love crushed his skull between your thighs from how tight you kept them.
You suddenly cried out again as a sharp pain emitted from your left thigh. You felt him dig his fangs into your soft flesh, anchoring his jaw into the meat of your thigh as he quickly drank from you. The pain ebbed quickly, an overwhelming sense of pleasure smacked whatever senses hadn't yet been dulled by pleasure. Your head swam in a sea of warmth and fuzziness, your body felt like was weightless.
You looked down at your husband who was already looking back at you. His green eyes were lit ablaze with the fiery passion of one thousand suns (how ironic for someone of his condition), those haunting green eyes cut through the dim lighting coming from the hallway. He kept eye contact with you as he fed, he always tried to whenever he wouldn't bury his teeth in your throat, until he had his fill from your thigh.
He pulled away, licking at the blood that dribbled down his lip. He already looked so much better from just how little of your blood he fed on. A feral glint remained in his eyes as he eyed you on the bed. His fangs glinted dangerously, still sticky with your sweet blood.
He kept your legs over his shoulders as he stood over the bed and ground the tip of his cock against your dripping cunt. You whined as your pussy cried, but Elliott's hypnotic gaze seemed to calm you as he parted your slick walls.

Condensed Milk - A Dirty Money Comic pt 14
[part 1] [part 2] [part 3] [part 4] [part 5] [part 6] [part 7] [part 8] [part 9] [part 10] epilogue: [ part 11 ] [ part 12 ] [ part 13 ] [ x ] [part 15]
eyy its been a hot minute (a year)
i got over some of (but not all of) my block on this comic that's spinning out of control. there should be more i assume but idk when.
Notes below as per usje
blue sky bert deactivated. manly man soother applied.
ben's ISBN shirt is real - i think i first saw it at the U of T bookstore tbh.
Flashbacks take place sometime between October 2019 and March of 2020, I think.
marie's outfit is based on a drawing i did like TEN YEARS AGO if you can believe (thx for fishing that out @celestialily)
FIFO stands for Fly-In-Fly-Out (i.e. oil camp shift work)
i said earlier in the wips about how i like the trope where stoic characters have the same facial expression for everything- I just think it's funny that for Ben his sole expression is ^_^
joel saying "great to have you back home" is referring to ben being on the east coast / in his element, i'm not conflating NL with the Maritimes I promise.
that said I think they know him well enough that they can tell when he's PISSED lol. I feel like Ben tends to mask his anger a lot (which is why I showed his anger in a reflection rather than on his face in part 6 above there.
but yeah the point of this page is kind of. "ben isnt an idiot and he was genuinely mad and everyone knew it". well. everyone except bertie obviously.
ok seriously what questions do we still have to answer and how do i end this comic before the epilogue is longer than the og? i dont knowwwwww! tell meeeeeeee.

But, as it turned out, even though Reb Zushya moved from his spot on the floor to a seat at the table, he still got beaten up. Rather than this monumental change for Jews being the game-changer that neutralized antisemitism, Israel’s existence and actions have been leveraged by those who are drunk with antisemitism as the new justification for their prejudice, and for unleashing more violence against Jews — now called Zionists.
In fact, a critical aspect that is often overlooked in the discourse surrounding Israel and antisemitism is the conflation of the Israeli state’s actions with Jews. I don’t recall, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year, that Russians living in the West, along with descendants of Russian immigrants, were targeted by protesters sympathetic to the Ukrainian cause, and nor do I recall Russian Orthodox churches being daubed with swastikas — despite the frequent reports of horrific scenes of death and destruction in Ukraine.
And yet Jews are targeted, vilified, attacked, intimidated, ostracized, threatened with death, and accused of being murderers — British Jews in London, Australian Jews in Sydney, American Jews in New York, and French Jews in Paris — all because Israel is engaged in a war with Hamas in Gaza (after the war was initiated by Hamas attacking Israel).
The facts speak for themselves: criticism of Israel’s policies and military strategy has quickly morphed into undisguised antisemitic rhetoric that employs age-old stereotypes and conspiracy theories, and which calls for Israel’s existence to be undone.
And again, I don’t hear any calls for Russia to be undone as a country, or Syria, or Myanmar, or Zimbabwe, or Sudan — and the list goes on and on — even after tough images emerge from each of these countries, or countries of their foes, because of actions they have taken. Only Israel suffers the indignity of being called illegitimate. This means that the line between political critique and ugly bigotry has become dangerously blurred.
The argument that “Anti-Zionism is Not Antisemitism” is a cornerstone mantra of many anti-Israel groups, who insist that all criticism of Israeli policies and Zionist ideology is entirely separate from antisemitic sentiments.
But surely this distinction is undermined when we witness a marked increase in antisemitic incidents following the October 7 massacre. It all suggests that anti-Zionism either contributes to, or indeed serves as a pretext for, antisemitic attitudes and actions, challenging the clear-cut separation that anti-Israel groups claim to uphold.
Then there is the shocking lack of reaction by progressive groups to allegations of violence against Israeli women by Hamas on October 7, compared to their vocal support for victims of sexual violence during the #MeToo moment. Where was the outrage for Israeli women? And how can that lack of outrage be explained as not being antisemitic? The answer is: it can’t.

trigger warnings apply, adjust as needed.
the police have a few more questions.
how are you doing?
it's lots of this and not knowing what to do next.
you're part of this family.
how you doing, kiddo?
I thought you should have been there.
I was outvoted.
he was so hairy, and I've dated italian guys!
are you leaving?
everyone idolizes their dad, right?
where do you come up with that?
why are we doing all of this again?
I read a tweet about a new yorker article about you.
you're famous!
I know who you are.
I read your profile in the new yorker and I found it delightful.
why are you here?
it's just not the same.
are you baiting me?
that's where the real money is.
this is not how I wanted to have this conversation.
you tell her, or I will.
that's none of your business.
I don't know how this mix-up happened.
please, you don't understand.
I know it will hurt, but it's all for the best.
my mind's made up.
just the thought of lying makes me puke.
I feel like I shouldn't be here.
it makes no damn sense.
we are not breaking tradition on my birthday!
you really love drama, huh?
you wanna do drugs?
you know, this is an interesting and efficient method of murder.
I need to write this down.
listen to me!
I thought I heard something.
what do you want me to do?
you've got to be kidding me.
I keep waiting for the big reveal.
those two things don't even conflate.
don't point at me!
I'm warning you!
financially, I'd like to help you out.
I stayed hoping to speak to you a little bit more.
I trust your kind heart.
how about it, watson?
you do as I say and everything will be just fine, I promise.
sweet beans!
what is this? what's this arrangement?
it's funny you're here at all.
why are you even bothering?
we gotta do this more often.
this might be the best thing that could ever happen to you.
nothing good is ever easy.
eat shit!
what do we have here?
this can't be legal.
you little bitch!
did you know about this?
were you in on this from the beginning?
I totally understand what you must be feeling right now.
okay, seriously though, what the hell?
it's the only thing that makes sense.
[name], tell me everything.
did you just google that?
I suspect foul play.
I don't care if I go to jail.
you've come this far, let me help you go all the way.
you should do whatever you think is right.
I won't let that happen.
how do you know all this stuff?
[name], do you hear me?
do you regret helping me yet?
this is going well.
I feel like I swallowed bees.
I couldn't do this without you.
that was the dumbest car chase of all time.
I don't know what you want.
we have to figure it out, right here, right now.
you did this!
you won't get away with this!
this will tie everything up.
you're not much of a detective, are you?
you make a pretty lousy murderer.
perhaps we deserve each other.
you've always been good to me.
that was certainly not what I was expecting at all.
why did you hire me?
you can't be that crazy.
that's some heavy duty conjecture.
you are guilty of nothing but a few amateur theatrics.
are you back again already?
this is stupid with two o's.
you have not a shred of evidence.
in for a penny, in for a pound.
I knew you were guilty as shit.
don't you come near me!
I'm going to say this just to you.
you think I'm not going to fight to protect my home?
oh shut up!
yeah, I killed them.
what do you got on me?
you'll see just how much hell I can wreak on your life.
I have a feeling you'll follow your heart.
