Plot

Maomao, a young woman, is an apothecary who’s kidnapped and forced to work as a servant at the inner palace. While there, she solves a curse afflicting the imperial heirs and is whisked away to be a poison tester for the emperor’s favorite concubine. When she’s not doing that she solves mysteries?

Characterization

Maomao is an intriguing protagonist because she doesn’t care for anything except for herbal medicine and poisons. She’s sassy, sarcastic, serious, and sly. She doesn’t fall for Master Jinshi’s looks ( which throws him off). Maomao has a lot to learn about etiquette and life, but picks up on things quickly, except for Jinshi’s intentions. She’s a complex character with clear flaws she can improve upon, which makes her very relatable to the reader.

Master Jinshi’s is an ethereal beauty of a man…too bad he’s a eunuch. He is the overseer of the inner court “garden” where the emperor’ concubines live. He relies on his beauty, and what it can’t do for him, he relies on his cunning and intelligence. He doesn’t understand why his beauty doesn’t affect Maomao, but he enjoys their interactions. He’s an interesting character that has some complexity. I’m looking forward to the author fleshing him out more.

The secondary characters fill the world for Maomao quite well. Each as a specific purpose in her life. She interacts with them more than once. This creates a circle around her much like how we do with our friends and family.

World-Building

World-building happens mainly through the backgrounds of the manga. Another great we;at that Apothecary diaries does this is Maomao’s interactions with secondary and background characters. Her inner observations color the world for us. One such line being:

“The palace and the pleasure district are not all that different” (Vol. 1, p. 7).

Theme

Life is full of surprises.

Observations

Jinshi’s is set-up to become a complex and major player in Maomao’s life and is definitely the romance partner. At the same time, there is the trope of strong female hating the romance partner and then falling for him over time. While this trope is played out, the slow-burn of this piece with the mixture of intrigue and mystery helps move the story without focusing too much on the romance. It’s a great balance.

The mysteries are interesting and engaging. We learn a lot about the world and how it works by Maomao solving them. Maomao has the potential, circumstances, and guidance to improve herself if she can learn to expand her knowledge past herbal medicine and poisons.

MANHWA RECS??? Say no more.

The Villainess is a Marionette / The Way to Save the Female Lead's Older Brother both have frankly unreasonably beautiful art and pretty badass, calculating, very unreasonably attractive heroines.

Death is the Only Ending for a Villainess is another manhwa with a really cool female lead who's very pragmatic and relatable, she's one I'm really rooting for.

The Great Wish is a more plot-intensive but slow-moving politically motivated manhwa with some very nice character development and really neat grey vs grey morality.

I Failed to Throw the Villain Away is a secret pleasure of mine. The art is very pretty, the male lead is pretty much batshit insane, and he and the female lead are both traumatized by a fucked up childhood they spent together (the male lead was a slave in the female lead's household).

Ohhhhh, nice recs!

I heard about some of these before! I think I tired to get into The Villainess Is A Marionette, but I don't think I found a very good translation and so I couldn't get into it. I like to read Manhwa to turn my brain off and just enjoy the romance, so I'm very particular about the translation lol.

I heard about The Way To Save The Female Lead's Other Brother from a strong female progtagist listing. But I found myself not liking the characters that much? I felt like the female lead was a little too cold hearted for my taste. Honestly I really, really enjoy strong, takes no bullshit Mcs, than Mcs that are bashful or insecure. But I don't think cold hearted Mcs are for me. It's the reason when I couldn't get into The Lady And The Beast, even though, on paper, I should have really enjoyed the Mc.

I think I recognize the cover to Death Is The Only Ending For The Villainess but I can't remember if I actually read it or not... guess it's going on my to read list lol.

The Great Wish and I Failed to Throw The Villain Away both look really good! I also haven't heard of either of them! Though, im a little weary about reading less popular Manhwas purely because I worry what the translation quality will be.....

Now, to get into some of MY recs.

When I first got into My Gently Raised Beast I was expecting myself not to like it. The Mc is your typical shy, and "Oh, the male lead could *never* fall for me" type of character. Which i really hate. What had me holding on was the male lead. There's nothing outright special about him, but I just really enjoyed that he thinks about what the Mc might want. He's never pushy, or forceful, and tries to do everything the "correct" way so they can be together. Honestly, it was very refreshing. I always dislike harsh male leads that never seem to question what their love interest would feel, so seeing this guy be thoughtful was really nice. Overall, just a really sweet story.

Beware The Villainess is truly my favorite Manwha of all time. I think I love absolutely everything about it. The Mc is the classic "isekaied onto the villain but is actually a good person" trope. The Mc takes no shit from aby of the guys around her, and has an incredibly wholesome friendship with another girl character. The love story between the Mc and the male lead honestly blew me away. It's basically a role reversal, were the girl is all tough and headstrong, and the guy is more shy and bashful. I never seen a role reversal done like this in a Manwha before and I absolutely ADORE it! The Female lead is all "let *me* protect *you*" and she does! Really, that's all I want in a role reversal lol. Yet the Mc isn't cold or unfeeling at all, she's still very sweet and has empathy. Honestly, the male lead just gives me such "I can peg him" vibes its amazing lol. Definitely a must read!

Again, The Reason Raeliana Ended up at the Duke’s Mansion seems like a Manwha I would have really disliked. The male lead is forceful and doesn't care about the Mcs feelings. The Mc is insecure to an almost insane level. So why did I read every single chapter of this Manwha? Well, for starters it has one of the best translations I ever seen. And. I don't really know? This was the first Manwha I ever read, so I wasn't really intune with kind of things I liked and disliked in a Manwha. I found it a while later, and decided to pick up roughly where I left off, and once you get past the whole "Male lead is a jerk and the Mc doesn't really wanna be with him" it's actually a really sweet story! (When the two leads actually love each other, the story is actually sweet! Who knew! /j) The manwha is finished, and fully translated and easy to find and read. It's also incredibly funny and has a really good art style. If you're willing to put up with some of the things I listed, then I think you should give it a try.

Inso's Law is different as in its set in the present day, but I actually think this is one of my favorite piece of media ever lol. It's just, so incredibly good! Basically, the plot is that this girl doesn't really get Iskeaied into a story, but more so a book she's reading kinda becomes reality and she's gets placed as the female leads best friend. That's not really spoilers because you fund this out in like, the first chapter lol. It's incredibly instructing and really deals with the stress of being Iskeaied. Also, every character is so incredibly flushed out, not just the Mc and the love interest! The story is extremely funny, while also having a lot of heart and feels. I wouldn't really call the Mc a strong female character, but more of a regular person. I would recommend this to people who even hate Iskeai stories because this one does it in such a unique way that I think everyone should read.

It's been a while since I read Who Made Me A Princess but I found myself really enjoying it when I first read it. Unlike the others, this is a family story instead of a romance focused story like the others. The father is pretty typical guy for a Manwha, as in he's very cold and unfeeling and it's the Mcs job to "fix" him. Honestly I normally really dislike these stories, but since they're so common in the genre I kinda forced myself to tolerating it lol. But when you actually get into the story, and pass the father being a jerk, the relationship they build together is actually very sweet. I also found the beginning to extremely hilarious, and the side characters to be very likeable.

I really, really enjoyed Tricked Into Becoming The Heroine's Stepmother. It's a very laid back story, which I honestly prefer lol. Hugh fansty is nice, but when you have to start taking notes on what the characters are saying, and their nations relationships with each other, it becomes a little too much for me lol. Unlike the last rec, this dad really really loves his daughter, and it's why he's cold to the Mc! That passes extremely quickly tho, so if you're worried about that don't worry. The relationship between the Mc and the male lead is extremely natural, and it was something I found really really cute in this story. The basic plot is the Mc gets sent into the book her and her friends made, but years before the story takes place, now she teams up with the male lead to stop certain things from happening. It's a really cute read, and I definitely loved how the kid character was protrayed!

The Monster Duchess And The Contract Princess is a really cute read! There's basically no romance in this, and instead focuses on the family aspect! The basic plot is the Mc wants to create a contract with this real scary noble family in exchange for protection. I loved the adopted mother, and how lowkey intense she is, while also being very sweet. It's a very good read if you like adult characters looking after mistreated children.

The Remarried Empress has so much emotional depth, and great characters, that I actually got a little mad when I would read through the comments while I read this story. Characters make bad choices, but you completely understand why they did and where they're coming from. The Mc is cold and doesn't show much emotion, but you know exactly when she's like that. Her husband is a jerk, and is the villain of the story, but I still found myself able to understand his viewpoint and where he was coming from. I actually ended up feeling really bad for the rival girl (?? What do you call the character that's like a rival to the main girl? Whatever, rival girl works lol) because I understand where she's coming from! Basically every character makes really bad mistakes, but I can understand their view point. The story is very nuanced, and a great read if you like those kind of stories.

Ok, so I'm going to be honest, I really really love reverse harem stories. Which is why I absolutely adore My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom! It's extremely funny, like, the humor is definitely one of its main selling points. There's also female love interests too!! Which is always a delight to see in reverse harem stories. It was really interesting seeing the Mc befriend and make all the other characters fall for her, even when she doesn't realize how much of a player she is lol. Overall the story has a lot of heart, and is very funny! (I really struggle to find a reverse harem story that I like because this was one of the first I read and it set the bar SO high for me, so if yall have any suggestions I would love to hear them lol)

SLIPPING

A Naomi O'Brien and King Siathrich story

Author's note: Something I wrote way back. Woke up to this dream one morning, and I don't know why. Maybe because the ship never sailed and it hurts. Haha! Anyway, please excuse the grammar or the inconsistency of the story.

It was around 2 or 3 years ago. It was Siathrich's first time having an attack when he heard someone running down the hall, entering my room. He expected it to be a maid. It was Naomi. Instead of her usual clean look and stern face, she looked unusually unfamiliar that night. She was in her nightgown, with unkempt hair and a face that he could never fathom to be real. Her eyebrows furrowed, her eyes mixed with shock and worry, and her lips a little parted, gasping for air. Her fingers ran through his hair as she whispered sweet nothings in his ear.

After he calmed down, she got up to call the doctor. He grabbed her nightgown, telling her to stay with him. To his surprise, she did not protest. She quietly sat down beside me.

"Lie down with me.” She stared at him. “I promise I won't touch you,” he said reassuring her. She snorted, but she did anyway, staying inches away from him. She did not question anything. She just lay there, staring at the painted ceiling with him. Minutes passed, and they stayed that way. No words, no movement. He turned his head only to find her sleeping soundly. 'Ah right... she must be exhausted from the party,' he thought.

He closed the gap between them and covered them with the blanket. He stared at her sleeping face; it was the most relaxed he had ever seen. She looked so unguarded. She would always wear a frown, a scowl, or a blank face around him. 'So this is who you are behind the mask, Naomi.' He smiled and hugged her gently.

She woke up at dawn when she felt something heavy, making it hard for her to move. She tried turning her head to the side but couldn't because something blocked her. Then she remembered she slept in His Majesty's room. He was nuzzling her neck with his arms wrapped tightly around her and his leg intertwined with her own.

She tried to move her head away and remove his arms around her, but he only tightened them more and moved closer so that she could feel his breath on her neck. Then, he whispered in a groggy voice.

"Just a little more."

She glanced at the grandfather clock ticking back and forth across the room, it was already four in the morning. She had to get ready.

"Let go, Sire. I have to get ready. The maids will be up in a few minutes," she said in a low voice. But Siathrich did not budge. This time, a little louder, she called out to him. "Sire!"

She sighed when there was no reply. She tried to push him with force, but he only tightened his grip. 'No one can beat a stubborn king,' she mumbled, giving in.

Just then, she felt Siathrich's thumb drawing circles in her stomach.

"Won't you bear my children, Countess?"

She froze. Those words sent shivers down her spine. And she broke out in goosebumps. He would usually joke around, asking her to marry him. But his tone this time wasn't the usual. She knows him far too well already to know the difference.

She snorted and tried to brush it off. "Is this what you tell all those women you sleep with, sire? Because it's not working for me."

He moved his head so that he could look into her eyes. She stared at him for a few seconds before averting her eyes. 'Hang it all!' those golden eyes weren't kidding. She closed her eyes. "You know the answer to that already, Your Majesty. I don't want to have any more connections with the royal family. What you're feeling right now is merely an attraction, the same feeling you have for all those women. I have no intention of getting married. Not now..." She paused. "Not to you."

There was silence.

Feeling his arms loosen, she pulled away and stood up. She stared at his golden eyes blankly staring at her. She gave him a short and gentle smile before bowing and leaving the room.

Siathrich lay on his back and stared at the painting on the ceiling. It was the painting of angels dancing on top of sunset clouds. "It's not merely an attraction, Naomi," he said to himself. "Not a mere attraction."

Outside, Naomi stood with her eyes closed, repeating the same words in her head over and over again. 'I want to quit.'

The sky around the castle became heavy, and the rain started pouring. It was going to be a long and dreary day.

Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke’s Mansion was a rather interesting story, and one I feel could have remained largely the same had it not have the isekai catalyst. In some ways, it reminds me of Snow White With the Red Hair, and that story simply worked without needing such an overused element.

Now I’m left with four more shows from the spring season to go! Then I can move on to the summer shows… (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥｀)

if anything good came out of 2020, it’s my discovery of manhwas.

well, it’s not like i’ve never read a single manhwa in the past 15+ years but tbh, the ratio of manhwa:manga i consume on a weekly basis has jumped exponentially this year. previously it was like 1:99 and now it’s like 90:10 LMAO.

so, just to remind myself that the world is still full of good things, i had to make this list. which i will probably edit in the future, if i can be bothered to. :)

anyhow, this list was not made in any particular order, just whichever came into mind. it’s loooong so be prepared! (I’ve read way more titles than mentioned but just included the ones worth checking out)

Bahahah omg he looks evil there! But our dearest archduke is hardly that aww. Soz, I just ripped off the covers of the manhwa cos I can’t find a panel I liked more than another. I mean, this manhwa is a GEM. I can’t even begin to describe this because everything about it blew me away. This is not something you read when you are craving for fluff, or just wanna have something brainless after a hard day at work or if you just wanna have some eye candy lol. This is something you pick up on a weekend, when you have time, because you need those hours to digest, appreciate, clutch your chest, tear a little because you find yourself falling in love with these characters. It doesn’t have any of that cliche isekai, romance, revenge themes going on. It has a solid plot, backed by incredible characters, beautifully woven by the authors and artist with incredible pacing that keeps you on your toes and keeps you looking forward to the next chapter. Maybe I would have been happier if I found it after it was completed lol. HAVE I CONVINCED YOU ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU WANNA READ IT?! like, idk, just go. JUST GO READ IT GDI.

p.s. it says there romance but naaaaaaah, dont go in with that expectation. :) this story is so much more than that.

This...this!!! THIS MANHWA NEEDS MORE LOVE. If you need a lot of fluff, a little, ok maybe quite a bit of sadness and tragedy, sweet sweet romance, cutie pies, please, look no further!!! Again, pacing, character development are so important to me and this manhwa aces it. I love the 2 MCs very much. And the side characters too. :)

When I first read this, i fucking cried. like please don’t ask me why. it’s not like its an absolute tragedy but I was just rooting for the MC so much and I really want for everything to go her way. Sure, she goes back to try to undo the stuff that went wrong but phew, she certainly changed things so much everything that comes her way have made it so her previous experiences can hardly help aaaaaaand that’s what makes it fun! I sometimes wish the pacing could be a little more consistent, and there could be more characters I could love a little more wholeheartedly (so i wont have to be in so much despair when i read this sometimes lol) but omg the art, isn’t it pretty?! I’ve re-read this soooooo many times but the art blows me away all the time. And have I already mentioned how much I love her?! I LOVE YOU SHULI! AND I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY!

LOL. as for plot... uhm... it’s alright. it’s pretty engaging and i quite like the MC, she’s smart and independent and i love how she views them all antagonistically at all times HAHAHHA. her past is kinda... weird though and i do wish they’d stop referencing it. cos... girl why do you wanna go back to reality!!! stay here! it’s way more exciting!

i love the whole isekai/reincarnate/transmigration theme and this is honestly one of the better, not-so-cliche or cheesy ones HA.

BECAUSE OF CLAUDE OF COURSE. ahahaha. okay aside from the amaaaaaaazing art and the beautiful people, the plot is not too bad. a little extreme at times but it’s interesting enough to keep me going. it’s currently on hiatus though and i was highly annoyed by how the first season ended. (YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPENED? NOTHING.)

i hope the plot can move faster in the next season! and that our dearest MC athanasia can you know, finally be a little more useful... like omg just tell lucas already!!! and tbh girl, no matter which guy you choose, i approve. :D

anyway, i had to feature this cos the art is unique! and the story is great. :) and i looooooove listening to the ost while i read it. it starts out kinda slow but as the pace picks up, you won’t be able to stop. and you find yourself conflicted at various points. it did win an award for a reason.

no matter what, i still think dowun is best for her okay. it’s dowun or nothing. he’s devoted to her, we all know that! he just needs to ditch that annoying female guard!!! ok yknw what, maybe nothing is better. :/ *cries*

im just not sure i like how this season’s plot is progressing. :/ but i guess it brings us nearer to solving the mystery in the first leg of the manhwa. i just enjoyed the whole part of him leveling up and now that he isn’t really leveling up anymore... idk. am i hoping for more plot shit like bleach (oh wow now u quincy?)... idk man. anywho, no regrets starting on this series and marathon-ing it to death.

cross fingers the plot picks up and doesnt get too complicated for its own good.

Day 150

Yesterday’s list:

Read, just read, relax, breath, recenter, and learn to exist again. Also Manhwa

Hm, easy enough. How’d that go?

Well, was asleep until...4pm or so? Didn’t properly get up until 5pm. So. Yea...

i distinctly remember having a dream, i opened my eyes in bed, it was dark, Sir was laying on his stomach, with the phone, playing some sort of connect-the-dots thing. But...it was a sphere, in a 3d space kind of thing, and to connect the dots you had to do weird algebraic concoctions of math...puzzles. And you had to somehow get two that had the same answer, though the math formula to get it was completely different (i.e. 1+1=2 and 5-3=2, that kind of thing) i have no idea how you connected those dots to other dots...but...oh gods it was complicated and dream me was just like “fuck this” and rolled over and went back to sleep. It was so odd so strange, but hey, dream Sir was enjoying himself. So. There’s that.

Anyways.

It was a lovely night of sleep, i truly enjoyed it. Woke up feel quite well. Didn’t do much in the way of using that lovely energy - but hey, just knowing it’s possible still makes one feel good.

What did i do today? Well, i read. i read a lot.

Bread almost happened. Bread did not happen, but that's ok. There is always tomorrow for Bread. Dishes needed washed instead.

Food: A+!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ooooooo potato soup yum so SO good! Liquid: A One supposes, only been up for so long, but doing well enough. Pain: B Achy hands, as per usual. Arthritis is a bitch and a half. Had bubble guts, not good growly guts. Bleh. #JustIBSNonsense Brain: B A little ADHD focus problems, but, not too bad.

We’ve decided to just stay up the whole long way ‘round, maybe nap, so it’ll be interesting to see what tomorrow’s post is!

6. How has this pandemic been treating you?

despite having swollen fingers for days, i’m still alive so yay! i worry a lot for my family, especially my younger sister. i don’t really mind being cooped up in the house but i really really miss my friends and well, having a phone (context: my phone got stolen before quarantine started and now i haven’t had one for months). my birthday is coming up and i’ve never been more stressed in my whole life because everyone feels bad for me. if we’re delving more into my feelings, besides the usual: the angst and craving for death and the stress that comes with the date of my birth, i’ve been feeling a little sick. the heat is getting through me and i’m very close to moving into my fridge.

FA, OMG! I am totally in love with The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I have already finished it because I prefer light novels and it has been an amazing discovery and I totally love the fact that the main character is not a heroine!

TELL ME IF THIS ONE ISN'T WILD.

While I was reading it, I was gasping the whole time because the webtoon just have what almost 40 chapters? The whole color of the history just happens further that.

And like, she is an antihero because she has her own moral code. Because of everything she suffered. And despite plotting and manipulating, Aria is a product of everything that Mielle did to her and Aria is traumatized by that, she is 100% sure that her survival depends on Mielle's and her family being wiped out. But yeah, mostly she chooses to do it too.

AND ASHER!! MA DUDE!! He isn't a cute one either, Asher is ruthless. Savage. And a completely fool for her, she didn't even tried to seduce him but he got so into how smart, secretive and complex Aria is, that he fells super duper hard for her kkkkk it's clearly that he isn't the hero either, because he is quite possessive and ruthless, he don't care if she wants to make someone suffer, he only care about having her on his side.

I think the only person who is actually good on that Light Novel is Jessie, one of her maids, and Sarah, her teacher. The rest is rotten to the bones.

I read EVERYTHING about how Aria gets her revange and it's a hardcore one because Mielle tries so hard kill her but she is so dumb, that all her own card turns against her. Aria never activily acts against Mielle, she always REACTS to everything that Mielle does.

Which is why we, readers, can feel empathy for Aria. And even cheer for her. Not mentioning that Aria is fearless and smart. She is still emotional, vulnerable because of her own situation and so pretty 💕💕💕 it's really hard not liking her.

And for me Asher became a really pleasant surprise because he became her accomplice before even knowing the reason why Aria does certain things. And when she tells him all the truth, when he find out who she really is, he finds her even more attractive and just feel like helping her even more 😂😂😂 but Aria never really uses him. She does everything by herself and she don't even feel like telling him what she will do before hand KKKKK AND ASHER JUST SWINGS WITH HER WHATEVER 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The ending is really cute kkkkk after her wild revenge I wasn't expecting the other things. Actually the history really surprised me because I thought that Asher would stay on the background and be used, while Aria effortless just take down Mielle using him and the history would end with Aria just getting her goal.

But no, it's totally not it. I was like 👀👀👀 shiiit. That one for sure is one of my favorites. It's just SO GOOD. Seeing Aria raising from a lowborn daughter of a prostitute to something else even as powerful as Asher's position by her own, not really for Asher, but to protect her mom and herself from demise is just 💕💕💕💕

I was re-reading too "The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion" but the webcomic. And I just think it's the best one from that trend so far, the history is hella complex, the female lead is fucking cool and the male lead is a cheeky bastard completely devoted to her. Not mentioning the art and the romance is really cute. And that one is in a point that really worth keep up with just a shit tons of things moved the plot.
